2. A comparative study of new words and their synonyms
1) status, state, condition, situation
status 通常指被认为与同类或同阶层有关的人或物,指人时暗指相对的地位; 指物时大致相当于status或situation。例如: Personal allowance depends on your age and material status. 个人津贴取决于你的年龄和具体地位。 What is the current status of the arms-reduction negotiations? 削减武器的谈判最近形势如何? state 系常用词,指 “人或物存在或所处的状态”,但不着重于 “这种状态 和具体原因或条件的关系”。例如: The whole country was in a state of ferment that year. 那一年这个国家全部处于动乱状态。 The vice president is in a state of poor health. 副总统健康状况不佳。 state 和 condition 大体上可以互换使用。例如: a state/condition of despair 绝望的状态; a healthy state/condition 健康状况

3) reveal, expose, show, disclose, uncover She shows a great interest in American drama. 她对美国戏剧很有兴趣。 disclose意为“像移去封面那样使其为人所知”。例如: She refused to disclose her name and address. 她拒绝透露自己的姓名和住址。 The president disclosed the fact that he had been put into prison wrongly twenty years before. 董事长透露说他自己在二十年前曾被冤枉地送进监牢。 uncover 原意为“揭开盖子,除去覆盖物”, 引申为“通过揭露使秘密暴 露出来”。例如: The police uncovered a plan to steal some money. 警察揭露了一个盗款计划。

2) assume, presume, suppose suppose 最为口语化,它的含义是 “认为”, 有时可以表示一种建议。例如: I should suppose him to be about twenty. 我猜他是二十岁左右。 Suppose we go for a walk. 我们去散步吧。 3) reveal, expose, show, disclose, uncover 这组动词都含有 “显示”的意思,但其程度/侧重点各有不同。 reveal 应用范围较广,既可以表示 “透露/显示”情况/消息,又可以表示 “显露”感情等。例如: Little by little he revealed his ambitions. 他逐渐地暴露出了他的野心。

4) neglect, ignore, omit, overlook, disregard, slight
这组动词都表示“忽略、遗漏”的意思,但含义不同 neglect的意思是“玩忽、忽略、怠慢、忘记”,通常指对自己的职责、义 务等应该细心加以照料,却没有给予应有的注意。例如: He neglected to return the call. 他有意没回电话。 Don’t neglect paying your grandmother a visit now and then. 别忘了时常去看看你祖母。 ignore意为“不顾、不理睬”,常指故意装作不知道或看不见。例如 She saw him coming but she ignored him. 她看见他走过来,但装作没看到他。 omit与neglect的含义非常近似,但omit多用于表示无可非议的忽略,比如 没看到、没注意或只把注意力集中到别的重要问题。例如: His new girlfriend had omitted to tell him she was married. 他的新女友忘了告诉他她已结婚。

1) status, state, condition, situation condition 指 “由于一定的原因/条件或环境所产生的特定情况”。例如: His condition will not permit him to travel. 他的情况不允许他旅游。 The miners there worked in dreadful conditions. 那里的矿工们在极其恶劣的环境中工作。 situation 较狭义地指由环境综合决定的特定时间上的状态或情形。例如: Eternal truths will be neither true nor eternal unless they have fresh meaning for every new social situation. 如果永恒真理不能赋予每个新社会状况以新的意义,它将既不是真理也 不会是永恒的。 The economic situation is now different. 现在经济形势不同了。

2) assume, presume, suppose 这组动词都有 “假定/推测”的意思。 assume 一般指根据已知的或自认为真实的情况得出结论,常是一种推 测,虽然不一定准确无误。例如: Assume this to be true. 假定这是真的。 presume和assume的含义几乎相同,但含有无端或没有根据地进行推论 的意味。例如: From the way they talked, I presumed them to be father and son. 从他们的谈吐中,我推测他们是父子。 presume 还有“冒昧/放肆/擅自行事”的意思,而assume 则没有这层含 义。例如: You must not presume to speak for me. 你不要擅自代表我说话。

3) reveal, expose, show, disclose, uncover She revealed the secret by accident. 她不小心泄露了这个秘密。 expose意为“显露/露出”,它还有“暴露/揭发(秘密/阴谋)”的意思。 作为摄影专业术语时,意为“使…曝光”。例如: They consider it almost a crime to expose children to violence and sex on TV. 他们认为让儿童接触暴力和色情电视节目几乎是一种犯罪行为。 Their scheme was exposed. 他们的阴谋被暴露了。 The crime of the corrupt officials must be exposed without any reserve. 对贪官污吏的罪行一定要毫无保留地予以揭发。 This film has been exposed. 胶片已经感光。 show是表示“显出/显露”的最普通的词。例如:
