Take the lot of the happiest—it is a tangled yarn(纱线). Bereavements and blessings, one following anther, make us sad and blessed by turns. Even death itself makes life more loving. Men come closest to their true selves in the sober moments of life, under the shadows of sorrow and loss.In the affairs of life or of business, it is not intellect that tells so much as character, not brains so much as heart, not genius so much as self-control, patience, and discipline, regulated by judgment.I have always believe that the man who has begun to live more seriously within begins to live more simply without. In an age of extravagance and waste(铺张浪费), I wish I could show to the world how few the real wants of humanity are.To regret one's errors to the point of not repeating them is true repentance(悔改). There is nothing noble in being superior to some other man. The true nobility is in being superior to your previous self. You can do anythingIf anyone tries to tell you that you can't work hard enough to face the task in front of you--show them that you're tough. If anyone tries to tell you that you are not that strong, don'tlisten to discouragement--know that you belong. If anyone tries to tell you that you can't sing your own song, or make your way in the world...prove them wrong.Everyone gets an angel... You can't always see them because sometimes they are invisible.Sometimes they are your pet when he kisses you...Sometimes they are a small treasure you find... an angel might even be your friend. Those angels are quiet, but what they are really saying is: "pink clouds! A good day is just around the corner."So, if you begin to worry too much, just remember...Somewhere an angel is looking out for you, too. Today is a giftTwo men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation. And every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened(使活泼) by all the activity and color of the world outside. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color of the rainbow. Grand old trees graced the landscape, and a fineview of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene. One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man couldn't hear the band - he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.Days and weeks passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly and painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the world outside. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it for himself. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said, "Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you."。

Analysis of Writing Short Stories in Junior High School English。
In junior high school English classes, students are often required to write short stories. Writing shortstories not only helps students improve their writing skills, but also enhances their creativity and imagination. In this article, we will analyze how to write a good short story in English.Firstly, it is important to choose a topic that interests you. If you are passionate about a particular subject, it will be much easier to write about it. For example, if you enjoy sports, you could write a story about a young athlete who overcomes obstacles to achieve their dreams. Alternatively, if you are interested in science fiction, you could write a story about a group of astronauts who discover an alien planet.Once you have chosen your topic, it is important to create a plot. A good plot should have a clear beginning, middle, and end. The beginning should introduce the main character and establish the setting. The middle should include the main conflict and build up to a climax. The end should resolve the conflict and provide a satisfying conclusion. In addition to a strong plot, a good short story should also have well-developed characters. Your characters should be believable and have distinct personalities. You should also try to include details about their appearance, personality, and background to help readers connect with them.Another important aspect of writing a good short story is using descriptive language. Descriptive language can help create vivid images in the reader's mind and make the story more engaging. You should try to use sensory details, such as sights, sounds, and smells, to make the story come alive. Finally, it is important to revise and edit your short story. You should read through your story several times to check for spelling and grammar errors. You should also ask someone else to read your story and provide feedback. This can help you identify areas where you can improve and make your story even better. In conclusion, writing short stories in junior high school English classes can be a fun and rewarding experience. By choosing a topic that interests you, creating a strong plot and well-developed characters, using descriptive language, and revising and editing your work, you can write a compelling short story that will captivate your readers.。

(100)Important Thins Life Teaches Us: Giving Blood Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at Stanford Hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare and serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year-old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes, I'll do it if it will save Liz." As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheeks. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Will I start to die right away?" Being young, the boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood. Attitude, after all, is everything!New words and expressions生词和短语volunteer [vɔlən'tiə(r)] n.

However, more often than not, once you arrive " there" you will still feel dissatisfied, and move your " there" vision to yet another point in the future. By always chasing after another "there," you are never really appreciating what you already have right "here." It is important for human beings to keep soberminded about the age-old drive to look beyond the place where you now stand. On one hand, your life is enhanced by your dreams and aspirations. On the other hand, these drives can pull you farther and farther from your enjoyment of yourlife right now. By learning the lessons of gratitude and abundance, you can bring yourself closer to fulfilling the challenge of livingin the present.

The science of loveScientists are finding that, after all, love really is down to a chemical addiction between people.OVER the course of history it has been artists, poets and playwrights(剧作家) who have made the greatest progress in humanity's understanding of love. Romance has seemed as inexplicable(费解的) as the beauty of a rainbow. But these days scientists are challenging that notion, and they have rather a lot to say about how and why people love each other. Is this useful? The scientists think so. For a start, understanding the neurochemical pathways that regulate social attachments may help to deal with defects in people's ability to form relationships. All relationships, whether they are those of parents with their children, spouses with their partners, or workers with their colleagues, rely on an ability to create and maintain social ties. Defects can be disabling, and become apparent as disorders such as autism and schizophrenia(精神分裂症) —and, indeed, as the serious depression that can result from rejection in love. Research is also shedding light on some of the more extreme forms of sexual behaviour. And, controversially, some utopian(乌托邦的) fringe groups see such work as the doorway to a future where love is guaranteed because it will be provided chemically, or even genetically engineered from conception. The scientific tale of love begins innocently enough, withvoles. The prairie vole(野鼠) is a sociable creature, one of the only 3% of mammal species that appear to form monogamous(一夫一妻的) relationships. Mating between prairie voles is a tremendous 24-hour effort. After this, they bond for life. They prefer to spend time with each other, groom each other for hours on end and nest together. They avoid meeting other potential mates. The male becomes an aggressive guard of the female. And when their pups are born, they become affectionate(深情的) and attentive parents. However, another vole, a close relative called the montane vole, has no interest in partnership beyond one-night-stand sex. What is intriguing is that these vast differences in behaviour are the result of a mere handful of genes. The two vole species are more than 99% alike, genetically. How to Live BeautifullyIn my newspaper column some months ago, I reprinted a short essay on youth by Samuel Ullman, an author unknown to me. Then I got a call from Ullman's great-grandson, Richard Ullman Rosenfield, a psychologist. He told me that he had been intrigued(好奇的) with the "spiritual journey" of the essay, especially in Japan.Gen. Douglas MacArthur, I learned, often quoted Ullman's "Youth" essay and kept a framed copy over his desk throughout the Pacific campaign. It's believed that the Japanese picked up the work from his Tokyo headquarters.Unlikely as it may sound, this essay, written more than 70 years ago, is the underpinning of much Japanese productivity and the basis of many businessmen's life philosophies. Many carry creased(有折痕的) copies in their wallets."Anyone worth his salt in Japanese business knows and uses this essay," says one longtime Japan observer, "It is our Popeye'sspinach(菠菜) ," said Tatsuro Ishida, who was deputy chairman of Fujisankei Communications Group."It touches me at the core of my heart," says Kokichi Hagiwara, the 67-year-old chairman of Japanese/American-owned National Steel in Pittsburgh. "This kind of enthusiasm is indispensable, We must have the spirit of youth to make change."Some Japanese leaders see the essay as a bridge between the two cultures, If Westerners can understand Japanese reverence(崇敬) for it, maybe they can better understand the Japanese businessman's quest for spiritual sustenance in the midst of material abundance. When one of Ullman's grandsons, Jonas Rosenfield, Jr., was having dinner in Japan a few years ago, "Youth" came up in conversation, Rosenfield told his dinner companion, a Japanese business leader, that the author was his grandfather. The news was staggering."'You are the grandson of Samuel Ullman?' he kept repeating," says Rosenfield, head of the American Film Marketing Association. "He couldn't get over it."Then the executive pulled a copy of "Youth" from his pocket and told Rosenfield, "I carry it with me always."Three years ago, several hundred top businessmen and government leaders gathered in Tokyo and Osaka to celebrate their admiration of Ullman's essay. Testimonials abounded, including one from Konosuke Matsushita, founder of the Panasonic Company, who said "Youth" has been his motto for 20 years.Someone asked, "Why don't Americans love the essay as much as we do? It sends a message about how to live beautifully to men and women, old and young alike."Samuel Ullman was born in 1840 in Germany and came to American as a boy. He fought in the U.S, Civil War and settled in Birmingham, Alabama. He was a hardware merchant with a penchant(嗜好,倾向) for public service that continues 67 years after his death, In the last few years more than $36,000 from Japanese royalties on a book and a cassette reading of his work has gone to a University of Alabama at Birmingham scholarship fund, Not bad for a man who started writing in his 70s. The wisdom of one wordIsn't it amazing how one person, sharing one idea, at the right time and place can change the course of your life's history? This is certainly what happened in my life. When I was 14, I was hitchhiking from Houston, T exas, through El Paso on my way to California. I was following my dream, journeying with the sun. I was a high school dropout with learning disabilities and was set on surfing the biggest waves in the world, first in California and then in Hawaii, where I would later live.Upon reaching downtown El Paso, I met an old man, a bum(流浪汉) , on the street corner. He saw me walking, stopped me and questioned me as I passed by. He asked me if I was running away from home, I suppose because I looked so young.I told him, "Not exactly, sir," since my father had given me a ride to the freeway in Houston and given me his blessings while saying, "It is important to follow your dream and what is in your heart. Son. "The bum then asked me if he could buy me a cup of coffee.I told him, "No, sir, but a soda would be great." We walked to a corner malt(麦芽酒) shop and sat down on a couple of swiveling stools while we enjoyed our drinks. After conversing for a few minutes, the friendly bum told me to follow him. He told me that he had something grand to show me and share with me. We walked a couple of blocks until we came upon the downtown El Paso Public Library. We walked up its front steps and stopped at a small information stand. Here the bum spoke to a smiling old lady, and asked her if she would be kind enough to watch my things for a moment while he and I entered the library. I left my belongings with this grandmotherly figure and entered into this magnificent hall of learning. The bum first led me to a table and asked me to sit down and wait for a moment while he looked for something special amongst the shelves. A few moments later, he returned with a couple of old books under his arms and set them on the table. He then sat down beside me and spoke. He started with a few statements that were very special and that changed my life. He said, "There are two things that I want to teach you, young man, and they are these:"Number one is to never judge a book by its cover, for a cover can fool you. "He followed with, "I ll bet you think I m a bum, don't you, young man?"I said, "Well, uh, yes, I guess so, sir. ""Well, young man, I ve got a little surprise for you. I am one of the wealthiest men in the world. I have probably everything any man could ever want. I originally come from the Northeast and have all the things that money can buy. But a year ago, my wife passed away, bless her soul, and since then I have been deeply reflecting upon life. I realized there were certain things I had not yet experienced in life, one of which was what it would be like to live like a bum on the streets. I made a commitment tomyself to do exactly that for one year. For the past year. I have been going from city to city doing just that. So, you see, don t ever judge a book by its cover, for a cover can fool you."Number two is to learn how to read, my boy. For there is only one thing that people can t take away from you, and that is your wisdom. " At that moment, he reached forward, grabbed my right hand in his and put them upon the books he d pulled from the shelves. They were the writings of Plato and Aristotle-immortal classics from ancient times. The bum then led me back past the smiling old woman near the entrance, down the steps and back on the streets near where we first met. Tucked away in our subconsciousness is an idyllic vision. We see ourselves on a long trip that spans the continent. We are travelling by train. Out the windows, we drink in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving on a crossing, of cattle grazing on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of corn and wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hillsides, of city skylines and village halls. But the uppermost in our minds is the final destination. On a certain day at a certain hour, we will pull into the station. Bands will be playing and flags waving. Once we reach there, so many wonderful dreams will come true and the pieces of our lives will be fit together like a completed jigsaw puzzle. How restlessly we pace the aisles, damning the minutes loitering, waiting, waiting, waiting for the station."When we reach the station, that will be it", we cry. "When I'm 18", "When I buy a new 450SL Mercedes Benz", "When I put my last kid through collage", "When I have paid off the mortgage", "When I get a promotion", "When I reach the age of the retirement, I shall live happily ever after."Sooner or later, we must realize that there is no station, no one place to arrive at once and for all. Thetrue joy of life is the trip. The station is only a dream. It constantly outdistances us."Relish the moment" is a good motto, especially when coupled withe the Psalm 118:24:"This is the day whichthe Lord hath made, we will rejoice and be glad in it." It isn't the burdens of today that drive men mad. It is the regrets over yesterday and the fear of tommorrow. Reget and fear are twin thieves who rob us of today. So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, climb more mountains, eat more icecreams, go barefoot more often, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more and cry less. Life must be lived as wego along. Then the station will come soon enough. Much meaning can be conveyed, clearly, with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak.Do you have such kind of experience? In a bus you may look at stranger, but not too long. Andif he is sensing that he is being stared at, he may feel uncomfortable. The same in daily life. If you are looked at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself upand down, to see if there is anything wrong with you. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel angrytoward other’s stare with you that way. Eyes do speak, right?Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive. But things are differentwhen it comes to stare at the opposite sex. If a man glances at a woman for more than 10seconds and refuses to avert his gaze, his intentionsare obvious, that is, he wishes to attracther attention, to make herunderstand that he is admiring her. However, the normal eye contact for two people engaged in conversation is that the speakerwill only look at the listener from time to time, in order to make sure that the listener does payattention to what the former is speaking, As for the listener, he will,to a certain extent, lookcontinously at thespeaker to tell him that he is attentive. If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking, as if he tries to dominate you, you willfeel disconcerted. A poor liar usually exposes himselfby looking too long at the victim, sincehe believes in the false idea that to look straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication.Quite the contrary. In fact, continuous eye contact is confined to lovers only, who will enjoy looking at each othertenderly for a long time, to show affection that words cannot express.Evidently, eye contact should be done according to the relationship between two people and thespecific situation.

Mark was walking home from school one day when he noticed that the boy ahead of him had tripped and dropped all of the books he was carrying, along with two sweaters, a baseball bat, a glove and a small tape recorder. Mark knelt down and helped the boy pick up the scattered articles.
Since they were going the same way, he helped to carry part of the burden. As they walked Mark discovered that the boy's name was Bill, that he loved video games, baseball and history, that he was having a lot of trouble with his other subjects and that he had just broken up with his girlfriend.
They arrived at Bill's home first and Mark was invited in for a Coke and to watch some television. The afternoon passed pleasantly with a few laughs and some shared small talk, then Mark went home. They continued to see each other around school, had lunch together once or twice, then both graduated from junior high school. They ended up in the same high school where they had brief contacts over the years. Finally the long awaited senior year came, and three weeks before graduation, Bill asked Mark if they could talk.
Bill reminded him of the day years ago when they had first met. “Do you ever wonder why I was carrying so many things home that day?” asked Bill. “You see, I cleaned out my locker because I didn't want to leave a mess for anyone else. I had stored away some of my mother's sleeping pills and I was going home to commit suicide. But after we spent some time together talking and laughing, I realized that if I had killed myself, I would have missed that time and so many others that might follow. So you see, Mark, when you picked up my books that day, you did a lot more. You saved my life.”
”Every little hello, every little smile, every helping hand saves a hurting heart. There s a miracle called Friendship that dwells in the heart. Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their heart to us. Show your friends how much you care...
The teacher delivered a free writing amazingly.
The child was so happy by thinking that he can finally write about his thought in his inner heart instead of the thesis writing.
Lying on the soft grass land with the sunshine sprinkling over his body warmly, he jumped up after thinking and composed a satisfactory article------The Sound of the Sun.
The boy handed in the composition with his fulfilled confidence, and then, he met the endless waiting.
At last, the paper was returned.
After seeing the result, the boy was trembled in the bloomy spring days.
The teacher gave him a “poor”in the last as the evaluation..
Th e teacher said, “How amuse you are! How can the sun make any noise?! You are not allowed to write the composition in this way any more.. The marks you get will be very low in this way.那个“差”字像一个张牙舞爪的魔鬼,时时出现在他的梦里。
The‘poor’evaluation is like a clewing de vils, which will appear in his dreams sometimes.
Several years passed, the teacher is still who he is, and the student is himself the same but grows older. Meanwhile, he has been regarded as a good boy who will not talk about the ill-advised things or say the strange words.
But one day in an reading appreciation course, the teacher interpreted the sent ence “I have heard the call of the sun” written by a famous author. His teacher spouted how graceful this sentence was, and how sensible it was, but he can hardly focus himself on even a word of it.
