To keep up their work they must read letters, reports, trade publications, **munications, not to mention newspapers and magazines: a never ending flood of words. In (1) a job or advancing in one, the ability to read **prehend (2) can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most of us are (3) readers. Most of us develop poor reading (4) at an early age, and never get over them. The main deficiency (5) in the actual stuff of language itself—words. Taken individually, words have (6) meaning until they are strung together into phrases, sentences and paragraphs. (7) , however, the untrained reader does not read groups of words. He laboriously reads one word at a time, often regressing to (8) words or passages. Regression, the tendency to look back over (9) you have just read, is a common bad habit in reading. Another habit which (10) down the speed of reading is vocalization—sounding each word either orally or mentally as (11) reads. To **e these bad habits, some reading clinics use a device called an (12) , which moves a bar(or curtain) down the page at a predetermined speed. The bar is set at a slightly faster rate (13) the reader **fortable, in order to "stretch" him. The accelerator forces the reader to read fast, (14) word by word reading, regression and subvocalization practically impossible. At first (15) is sacrificed for speed. But when you learn to read ideas and concepts, you will not only read faster, (16) **prehension will improve. Many people have found (17) reading skill drastically improved after some training. (18) Charlie Au, a business manager, for instance. His reading rate was a reasonably good 172words a minute (19) the training; now it is an excellent 1,378 words a minute. The 1990 census indicates that almost 14% of Americans speak a non English language at home. Yet only 3% reported that they spoke English "not well" or "not at all". That means that slightly more than one out of 10 Americans could be considered bilingual.Besides that, many high school, college students, and even some elementary school students are required to take a foreign language as a part of their curriculum. In addition to old standbys like Spanish, German and French, more and more students are opting for Eastern European and Asian languages. Of course, not all students keep up their foreign language abilities. As the old saying goes, " If you don't use it. " But still, a growing number of Americans **ing to appreciate the benefits of being multilingual.Ethnic enclaves, found particularly in major metropolitan centers, have preserved the language and culture of American immigrants. Some local residents can function quite well in their native language, without having to bother learning English. Regions such as southern Florida and the Southwest have numerous Spanish speaking neighborhoods. In fact, Spanish speakers—numbering over 17 **pose the largest non English linguistic group in America. But Chinese, Vietnamese, Italian, Polish and many other ethnic group add to the linguistic flavor of America. Foreign languages are so commonly used in some ethnic neighborhoods that visitors might think they are in another country!Although some Americans welcome this linguistic and cultural diversity, others have begun to fear that the English language is being threatened. Since the 1980s, the "English Only" movement has sought to promote legislation which would establish English as the "official language" and restrict the use of non English language. However, some groups, including TESOL, theorganization for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Language, object to such "language restrictionism". Their view, known as "English Plus", suggests that Americans should have respect for people's native language and help them fit into the mainstream of society. But so far, 19 states have passed English Only legislation, and the topic is the focus of an ongoing debate.Whether or not English is the official language of the United States, it remains the "language of **munication". Nearly everyone recognizes the need to develop proficiency in English in order to do well in America. To help those who want to brush up on their English skills, English as a Second Language (ESL) classes around. Cities with large numbers of recent immigrants often set up bilingual education programs to teach students content subjects in their native language while they improve their English. Language educators often have strong and divergent views as to which approach helps learners achieve better results: a bilingual approach, an ESL approach or even a pure immersion ("sink or swim") approach. However, all these teachers share a **mitment: to help students function well in English.Americans recognize that English is the international language, and people with good English skills can get by in many international settings. On the other hand, in a world growing increasingly smaller, second language skills can be a great favor. They can build cross cultural bridges and give people an edge in a variety of career field. Indeed, lack of foreign language proficiency can limit one's chances for advancement and keep one in a cultural dead end street. As many people in America are discovering, being monolingual is no laughing matter.48. How will you escape? Do you know how to save yourself? Please read the following passage.Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save your life. It isimportant to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways and fire escapes, but not lifts. From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible, learn the best way of leaving by windows with the least chance of serious injury. The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average person, hanging by the finger-tips will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed. Or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may leaked into the room.On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement(水泥) might end in injury. Bushes and grass can help to break a fall.26. 26.It is important to______.A. put out the fire in the burning houseB. know the ways to escape the fireC. jump off a burning houseD. keep the door closed27. 27.It is possible to escape through the windows______.A. if there are some bushes on the groundB. if you are strong enoughC. if you live on a lower floorD. if you have a long rope28. 28.Which of the following escaping way is NOT right?A. We didn't do anything romantic: we just walked hand in hand and talked about our past and the future. This was pretty much what I had expected.Andy is an unromantic guy: no sweet words or roses. Smart as he is, he is a little bit shy expressing his love. In contrast, I am an outspoken(直言不讳) girl who likes to show her feelings directly. So needless to say, I often feel that he is insensitive. I envy other girls who are surrounded by sweet words.I was in this sullen mood until I heard a beautiful sentence one day: " If one does not love you in the way you like, it does not mean that he does not love you. " This simple but sensible sentencemade me think about our happy days and recall his deep concern for me.One cold winter night, I got a high fever. He hurried to my dormitory and took me to the hospital. He was in such a hurry that he even forgot to wear socks. After arrival, he ran through the hospital handling all the formalities(手续). When I was put on a drip(点滴) , he told me interesting stories to make me happy. Being held in his warm arms and listening to his tender(温柔的) voice, I had never felt so safe **fortable. The writer's elder brother.D. The writer's boyfriend.英汉翻译41. 41.The lives of most men are determined by their environment. They accept the circumstances amid which fate has thrown them not only with resignation but even with good will. They are like streetcars running contentedly on their rails and they despise the motorcycle that dashes in and out of the traffic and speeds so jauntily across the open country. I respect them: they are good citizens, good husbands and good fathers and of course somebody has to pay the taxes: but I don't find them exciting. I am fascinated by the men few enough in all conscience who take life in their own hands and seem to mould it to their own liking. It may be that we have no such thing as free will but at all events we gave the illusion of it. At a cross-road it does seem to us that we might go either to the right or the left and the choice once made it is difficult to see that whole course of the world's history obliged us to take the turning we did.书面表达42. 42.Write a composition on the topic "Parental Hopes and Personal Ideals". You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below:1.父母都会望子成龙,但是父母的期望有时候会与他们孩子的理想发生矛盾;2.分析这种矛盾产生的原因;3.应该如何解决这一矛盾。

there are four choices marked A, B, C, andD.You should decide on the best choice.AScholastic thinkers held a wide variety of doctrines in both philosophy and theology, the study of religion. What gives unity to the whole Scholastic movement, the academic practice in Europe from the 9th to the 17th centuries, are the common aims, attitudes, and methods, generally accepted by all its members. The chief concern of the Scholastics was not to discover new facts but to integrate the knowledge already acquired separately by Greek reasoning and Christian revelation. This concern is one of the most characteristic differences between Scholasticism and modern thought since the Renaissance. The basic aim of the Scholastics determined certain common attitudes, the most important of which was their conviction of the fundamental harmony between reason and revelation. The Scholastics maintained that because the same God was the source of both types of knowledge and truth was one of his chief attributes, he could not contradict himself in these two ways of speaking.Any apparent opposition between revelation and reason could be traced either to an incorrect use of reason or to an inaccurate interpretation of the words of revelation.Because the Scholastics believed that revelation was the direct teaching of God, it possessed for them a higher degree of truth and certainty than did natural reason. In apparent conflicts between religious faith and philosophic reasoning, faith was thus always the supreme arbiter; the theologians decision overruled that of the philosopher. After the early 13th century, Scholastic thought emphasized more the independence of philosophy within its own domain.Nonetheless, throughout the Scholastic period, philosophy was called the servant of theology, not only because the truth of philosophy was subordinated to that of theology, but also because the theologian used philosophy to understand and explain revelation. This attitude of Scholasticism stands in sharp contrast to the so called double truth theory of the Spanish Arab philosopher and physician Averroёs.His theory assumed that truth was accessible to both philosophy and Islamic theology but that only philosophy could attain it perfectly. The so called truths of theology served, hence, as imperfect imaginative expressions for the common people of the authentic truth accessible only to philosophy.Averro ёs maintained that philosophic truth could even contradict, at least verbally, the teachings of Islamic theology. As a result of their belief in the harmony between faith and reason, the Scholastics attempted to determine the precise scope and competence of each of these faculties. Many early Scholastics, such as the Italian ecclesiastic and philosopher St.Anselm, did not clearly distinguish the two and were overconfident that reason could prove certain doctrines of revelation.Later, at the height of the mature period of Scholasticism, the Italian theologian and philosopher St.Thomas Aquinas worked out a balance between reason and revelation.( )31.With the Scholastics, the search for new knowledge .A.stopped completely B.slowed downC.advanced rapidly D.awaked gradually( )32.Which of the following best illustrates the relation between reason and revelation?A.They are simply identical.B.Revelation guides reason.C.They are occasionally contradictory.D.Reason is used to perfect revelation.( )33.It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 of the text that.A.the position of philosophy as a humble servant was acceptedB.religion had turned into a hamper to the function of philosophyC.philosophers often quoted revelation to support themselvesD.philosophers were sometimes referred to in religious practice( )34.Averroёs held that.A.Islamic theology was often subordinate to philosophyB.religious truth was nothing but imaginative fantasyC.real truth was inaccessible to many common peopleD.imperfect expressions were result of flawed religion( )35.Which of the following is most likely to be discussed in the part succeeding this text?A.Relations of St.T.Aquinas achievements to previous efforts.B.How St.T.Aquinas worked out in the balance in discussion.C.Other endeavors on the relationship of reason and revelation.D.Outstanding features of the mature period of Scholasticism.BSongs can have a powerful effect on people.Play “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves”to many baby boomers, for example, and chances are they ll run off, hands over their ears.Songs can have a powerful effect among birds, too.Consider the black capped chickadee. When it sings its “chick a dee”song, its flock mates come running. The song is a warning that a hawk, owl or other predator is perched nearby, and the other chickadees arrive to harass the enemy until it leaves.Researchers from the University of Montana have discovered that this warning call is a coded signal.By varying the call, a bird communicates to other birds the size of the predator, and thus the scope of the danger.“This is so far the most finely detailed alarm call system that we ve found,”said the lead researcher, Christopher N.Templeton, who is now a doctoral student at the University of Washington. The findings appear in the current issue of the journal Science.Mr.Templeton and his colleagues exposed chickadees to 15 different species of predators and recorded and analyzed the calls the birds made.In addition to “chick a dee”, the birds make a high pitched “seet”call when they spy a predator flying in the air.Upon hearing this call, the other birds either dive for cover or remain motionless so as not to be spotted. But it s the “chick a dee”call that the researchers focused on.“They change a number of different features about these calls,”Mr.Templeton said.“But most are not audible to us except the number of dees at the end.”They found that the birds varied the number of “dee”sounds depending on the size of the predator.More “dees”—as many as 21 in one case—were sounded for smaller predators like the Northern pygmy owl.Because chickadees are small and fast, smaller, more agile predators are more of a threat than larger ones. The more “dees”, the more chickadees show up to harass the predator, by dive bombing it or making noises in its face.“The goal is to drive it out of their territory so that it is no longer a threat,”Mr.Templeton said. This “mobbing”response to the calls is probably learned behavior, he said, a way that birds teach their young about risks.“It s a means by which adults tell the kids in the flock these guys are dangerous.”Mr.Templeton said.( )36.It can be inferred from the article that “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves”is.A.Gypsie's songB.an alarm call to hint at dangerC.a bad song referring to crimesD.a warning that the police is nearby( )37.When a black capped chickadee sings its song,.A.some predator s habitat must have been nearbyB.all of its flock mates arrive to drive the enemy outC.the song carries exact information about threat of predatorD.the song warns other species to stay out of the territory( )38.Mr.Templeton and his colleagues conduct their research to find .A.the responses of birds when they hear the alarming songsB.the way birds locate where the predator isC.the relationship between birds call pitch and predator sizeD.the way adult chickadees teach their young to escape the danger( )39.Which of the following is Not true about chickadees?A.Their songs not only warn but also communicate.B.A smaller type of hawk is more dangerous than a larger one.C.They mob the enemy by native instinct.D.Their calls mostly cannot be heard by human being.( )40.Which of the following is Not an example of “coded signal”(Line 1, Paragraph 2)?A.Bees perform dances to convey that the food source is not far away from the hive.B.Parrots imitate human speech and whistle when kept in captivity.C.Huntsmen use horns to indicate the presence of a fox in a field or to call the hunting party together.D.Bats and dolphins use high frequency sounds for communication and navigation.Ⅳ.Writing 10%Directions: Write a composition on the topic “Importance of Teamwork”.You should write at least 120 words and you
