It not only causes a lot of inconvenience to people’s life and work, but it may also threaten people’s lives. For example, private cars often take up bus lanes, which becomes a main threat to the safety of cyclists. What’s worse, overloaded truck run a red light at a fast speed without hesitation, thus resulting in many serious traffic accidents. In my view, quite a few things give rise to the traffic problem. In spite of the large-scale construction of roads and highways, there is still much room for improvement, because of the ever increasing number of cars these years. What’s w orse, some drivers, cyclists and pedestrians do not think it vital to obey traffic rules. In fact, traffic rules are part of the rules and regulations closely related to public order. Without them, people could not enjoy harmony or the country would be in chaos. But rules alone don’t secure an orderly society. It is the people who obey the rules that matter. It is everybody’s duty to observe them to keep our society in order and going on the right track.。

The company Terrafugia, based in Woburn, Massachusetts, says it plans to deliver its car- plane, the Transition, so customers by the end of 2011.“ It's the next ‘wow’vehicle,” said Terrafugia vice president Richard Gersh.“Anybody can buy a Ferrari, but as we say, Ferraris don't fly.”The car-plane has wings that unfold for flying - a process the company says takes oneminute - and fold back up for driving. A runway is still required to take off and land. The Transition is being marketed more as a plane that drives than a car that flies, althoughit is both. The company has been working with FAA to meet aircraft regulations, and with theNational Highway Traffic Safety Administration to meet vehicle safety regulations. The company is aiming to sell the Transition to private pilots as a more convenient and cheaper way to fly. They say it saves you the trouble from trying to find another mode of transportation to get to and from airports: You drive the car to the airport and then you're good to go. When you land, you fold up the wings and hit the road. There are no expensive parking fees because you don't have to store it at an airport - you park it in the garage at home. The car-plane is designed to fly primarily under 10,000 feet. It has a maximum takeoff weight of 1,430 pounds, including fuel and passengers. Terrafugia says the Transition reduces the potential for an accident by allowing pilots to drive under the bad weather instead of flying into marginal ( 临界的 ) conditions. The Transition's price tag :$ 194,000. But there may be additional charges for options like a radio, a transponder or a GPS. Another option is a full- plane parachute.“ If you get into a very awful situation , it is the necessary safety option ,” Gersh said.So far, the company has more than 70 orders with deposits. “We're working very closely with them, but there are still some remaining steps ,” Brown said.1. ASudha Chandran, a classical dancer from India, had to have her right leg cut after a car accident. She was also cut off on her bright career road. However, she didn’t stop struggling. In the painful three months that followed, Sudha met a doctor who had an operation on her leg. So strongly she wanted to go back to dancing after she had been fitted with a man-made leg. Sudha knew that she believed in herself and could realize her dream,so she began her brave journey back to the world of dancing —learning to balance, bend, stretch, walk, and turn. After every public recital (个人表演), she might ask her dad about her performance. “You stillhave a long way to go” was the answer she used to get in return. In January 1984, Sudha gained popularity again by giving a public recital in Bombay. She performed in such a great manner that it moved everyone to tears and this performance pushed her to the number one position again. That evening when she asked her dad the same question, he didn’t say anything. He just touched her feet as a praise.Sudha’s comeback was so touching that a film producer decided to make the story into a film, which has moved more and more people. When someone asked Sudha how she had managed to dance again, she said quite simply, “YOU DON’T NEED FEET TO DANCE.” Nothing is impossible in this world. With ClearPath, he says, a driver can decide what time he wants to leave, and ClearPath will give thefastest route. It looks at the entire road network, including surface streets as well as highways, before the driver hits the road. Professor Shahabi hopes to have ClearPath available nationwide and overseas once they can collect traffic data from other cities.“I always thought that Los Angeles had the worst traffic, but now I know that Shanghai, Beijing,Seoul, Tokyo, believe it or not, Singapore, Hong Kong certainly are examples that can immediatelyuse this.”Professor Shahabi hopes to share this new technology with companies that already havenavigation systems, such as Google and Apple.29. The class sit in a circle with their eyes shut and they count from one to ten: someone starts, the next voice comes from the far right, a third from the other side. The aim of the game is to listen for an opportunity to shout out the number without clashing (冲突) with another voice or leaving a pause. On the first try, most of the young Germans try to be first, while a few are too shy to join in, but by the fifth time round, they develop a rhythm (节奏).The message: give other people space but also confidently claim your own. This is a requirement for social well-being.The Willy Hellpach School in Heidelberg is the first in the nation to develop a happiness course. It is intended for students preparing for university entrance exams.“The course isn’t there to make you happy,” Ernst Fritz-Schubert, the school principal, warned pupils, “but rather to help you discover the ways to become happy.”Cooking a meal together is one of the class exercises. Improving body language under the guidance of two professional actresses is another. The course is taught for three periods a week. Although it’s the happy subject, the pupils themselves insist it is no laughing matter.“In the first period, we had to each say something positive about another member of the class and about ourselves. No laughing at people,” said Fanny, 17.Research by the school shows it is not the first to start happiness classes: they also exist at some US universities, mainly based on positive thinking, using findings from studies of depression.33. researchers. They say development, climate change and bushfires have all combined to reduce the number of wild koalas sharply. The Australian Koala Foundation said a recent survey showed the population could have dropped by more than half in the past six years. The number of koalas was once estimated to be more than 100,000,but now is as few as 43,000.The foundation collected field data from 1,800sites and 80,000trees to calculate the numbers. In one area in northern Queensland estimated to have 20,000koalas a decade ago,a team of eight people could not find a single animal in four days of searching. The foundation said besides problems caused by cutting down forests, hotter and drier conditions because of global warming had reduced the nutritional value of their main food, eucalyptus (桉树)leaves, leading to poor nutrition for them.Koalas, which live in the forests in Australia's east and south, are very picky about what types of the leaves they eat.Foundation chief Deborah Tabart said:"The koalas are missing everywhere we look. It's really no tree,no me.If you keep cutting down trees you don't have any koalas."She is hoping the new figures will persuade the government's Threatened Species Steering[.Com]Committee (TSSC)to list the koala as threatened. But committee chairman Bob Beeton said a decision was not likely recently and the koala's status as one of the see if Tubby would solve the problem,"以及短文最后一段描述,可知奶奶说的是,Tubby能帮助解决安迪的睡觉问题.故选C.6 B 词义猜测题.根据前文"Tubby was in his bed, totally sprawling out,pot ﹣belly in the air"及下文"like an express train"像一辆特快列车.可知此处指的是Tubby的鼾声就像是一列特快列车.故此处指的是发出噪音的意思,选B.7 A 细节理解题.根据短文最后一段"When the third day arrived,he hadunderstood that if he wanted to sleep in his bed,he would have to get into it before Tubby did."及前文二三四段描述,可知如果安迪不抢在Tubby之前占据这张床的话,他又将度过一个不眠之夜,故选A.8 D 细节理解题.根据短文最后一段"They were so happy about this that they stayed up quite late,celebrating."可知安迪的父母对他的转变感到非常高兴.故选D.9.There are many idioms in English. An idiom is a phrase that we can't understand from the meaning of each word. The following are some of them.As the crow fliesWhen a bird flies from place to place,it takes the most direct route. But when people drive, they have to follow roads and often go farther. When people give a distance"as the crow flies",they mean the shortest distance between the two points, not the distance you would have to travel by following roads. As Dan and his mum drove along the river, they could see the beach on the opposite side.Dan asked"How far is it to the beach?""It's only about a quarter of a mile as the crow flies"his mother said.Blow hot and coldIn one of Aesop's Fables,a man blows on his fingers to warm them up and then blows on his soup to cool it down.In both cases, the man is opening his mouth, but what comes out is different. If a person says one thing and later says the opposite,we say that the person is blowing hot and cold."Is Felicia going to try out for the soccer team this year?"Stacy asked."I don't know,"Tricia replied."Last week she was saying yes,but this week she's saying no.She's really blowing hot and cold."Break the iceNowadays people use the phrase to refer to ending an awkward silence by beginning a conversation. It was the first day of summer camp. The four girls began to make their beds insilence.None of the girls knew each other, and no one knew what to say. Finally, one of them broke the ice by saying"Hey,where's everybody from?"Bury the hatchetIn native American culture, when two nations agreed to end their war, they buried the hatchet. So to bury the hatchet is to make peace with someone else.Colin could not excuse his sister for breaking his tennis racket. Finally, his sister said,"Colin, can't we bury the hatchet?"9.What does"as the crow Fables.D.It's difficult to understand the meaning of an idiom by each word.【考点】广告布告类阅读.【分析】本文为广告应用文,介绍了四个常见的难以理解的习语.【解答】9﹣12 BBCD9.答案B.词义猜测题.根据As the crow flies部分的第一句话When a bird flies from place to place,it takes the most direct route可知,苍蝇飞行时走最直接的路线.根据When people give a distance"as the crow flies",they mean the shortest distance between the two points, not the distance you would have to travel by following roads可推断"as the crow flies"指的是走两点之间的直线距离.故选B.10.答案B.词义猜测题.根据Blow hot and cold部分的If a person says one thing and later says the opposite,we say that the person is blowing hot and cold可知,如果一个人说一件事,之后立马又说那件事的对立面,即改变态度,便可说这个人blow hot and cold.故推断其意为"改变态度".选B.11.答案C.推理判断题.根据Bury the hatchet部分的So to bury the hatchet is to make peace with someone else可知,该词组指的是与某人讲和.故推测Colin的姐姐想让Colin原谅她犯的错,选C.12.答案D.细节理解题.根据第一段An idiom is a phrase that we can't understand from the meaning of each word可知,要根据字面意思理解习语很难.故选D.13.Australia's koalas could die out within 30years unless immediate action is taken to stop the losing in population, according to researchers. The foundation said besides problems caused by cutting down forests, hotter and drier conditions because of global warming had reduced the nutritional value of theirmain food, eucalyptus (桉树)leaves, leading to poor nutrition for them.Koalas, which live in the forests in Australia's east and south, are very picky about what types of the leaves they eat.Foundation chief Deborah Tabart said:"The koalas are missing everywhere we look. It's really no tree,no me.If you keep cutting down trees you don't have any koalas."She is hoping the new figures will persuade the government's Threatened Species Steering[.Com]Committee (TSSC)to list the koala as threatened. But committee chairman Bob Beeton said a decision was not likely recently and the koala's status as one of the country's favorite animals would not be a factor."There's a number of species which are attractive and people have special feelings towards them.We don't consider that,"Mr Beeton said.13.The writer gives the example of the area in northern Queensland in Paragraph 3to show that D.A.the forests are being damaged heavilyB.the environment is being polluted seriouslyC.koalas usually live in wild mountainous areasD.the number of koalas is dropping quickly14.Global warming is an important cause of koalas'reduction because B.A.koalas can hardly stand the hot weatherB.the leaves koalas eat are losing nutritional valueC.koalas cannot get enough water to drinkD.the leaves koalas eat cannot grow in hotter and drier weather15.According to Bob Beeton,C.A.the koala is one of his favorite animalsB.a decision will be made to protect koalas in the futureC.they needn't pay special attention to koalasD.koalas needn't be protected at all.【考点】历史文化类阅读.。
