A lot of us lose life's tough battles by starting a frontal attack--when a touch of humor might well enable us to win. Consider the case of a young friend of mine, who was on his trapped w ay to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum(最后通牒) about the job. Although there was a good reason for Sam' s being late--serious illness at home--he decided that this by-now-familiar excuse wouldn't work any longer. His supervisor was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal s peech.Yes, the boss was, Sam entered the office at 9:35. The place was as quiet as a locker room; everyone was hard at work. S am's supervisor came up to him. Suddenly, Sam forced a grin and stretched out his hand. "How do you do!" he said. "I'm S am Maynard. I'm applying for a job, which, I understand, beca me available just 35 minutes ago. Does the early bird get the worm?"The room exploded in laughter, except that the supervisor ha d to clamp off a smile and walked back to his office. Sam May nard had saved his job--with the only tool that could win, a laugh.Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected, means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying "no", criticizing, g etting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing f ace. For some jobs, it's the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialog may s tart a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians on t elevision are doing more today for racial and religious toleran ce than people in any other forum.1. Why was Sam late for his job?A. Because he was seriously ill at home.B. Because he received an ultimatum.C. Because he was busy applying for a new job.D. Because he was caught in a traffic jam.2. What is the main idea of this passage?A. Sam Maynard saved his job with humor.B. Humor is important in our lives.C. Early bird can get the worm.D. Humor can solve racial discriminations.3. The phrase "clamp off" in Paragraph 3 means ________.A. try to hold backB. pretend to setC. send offD. give out4. Which of the following statements can we infer from the pa ssage?A. Many lose life's battles for they are always late.B. Sam was supposed to come to his office at 8:30.C. It wasn't the first time that Sam came late for his work.D. Humor is the most effective way of solving problems.1、答案解析:答案为D。

One moment it was quiet and calm in the forest, the next, the air was charged with tension. The elephant had heard the distant alarm calls of animals and her mood suddenly changed.I urged the elephant deeper into the forest. We sounded like a forest fire — crackling, snapping, trailblazing. But through all the noise came a sharp warning cry.The elephant stopped and we heard it again —the telltale call of a spotted deer.I looked quickly around the shadows of the forest.Rays of sunlight shone through tree branches, beneath which the patchwork (交错) of green plants and shadowswithinshadows would make tiger stripes (条纹) look more attractive.Apart from an occasional noise from the elephant's stomach, the forest was silent.Gradually, the tension slipped from our bodies. The elephant seized a nearby branch and put it into her mouth.I reached forward and gently moved my hand over the elephant's neck; there was a soft part, free of wrinkles and hairs, behind her ear. This was my fourth time to_sense_the_aura of the forest in Corbett, although I saw no tigers in the end.Located at the foot of the Himalayan mountains, Corbett is home to about 135 Bengal tigers, but the forest seemed to be guarding their whereabouts (出没处), a silent reminder of their secrecy and rarity.Still, I was happy enough touching the elephant behind the ear.If I had so desperately wanted to see a tiger, I could have gone to a zoo. After all, spotting tigers merely confirms their beauty; tracking them can make you aware of something more.1.Which of the following was a clear signal of alarm?A.The elephant stopped.B.A spotted deer called.C.The elephant seized a branch.D.The forest was silent for a while.2.The author begins his account of the tour in the forest mainlyby________.A.describing various soundsparing different animalsC.listing different activitiesD.introducing various plants3.What does the underlined part “to sense the aura” in Para.4 most probably mean?A.To see the diversity.B.To enjoy the scenery.C.To feel the atmosphere.D.To experience the freedom.4.How does the author feel after several visits to Corbett?A.Seeing a Bengal tiger is quite thrilling.B.It is very timeconsuming to travel in Corbett.C.It is really worthwhile to study the animals in Corbett.D.The process of finding Bengal tigers is most appealing.1.

Tristan da Cunhat discovered by the Portuguese admiral(葡萄牙海军上将) of the same name in 1506 and settled in 1810, the island belongs to Great Britain and has a population of a few hundred. It can be learned from the text that the island of Tristan da Cunha________.A. was named after its discovererB. got its name from Holland settlersC. was named by the British governmentD. got its name from the Guinness Book of Records此题答案应选A,其依据是匘iscovered by the Portuguese admiral of the same name,其关键词是 the same name。

To eat only a vegan(素食的) diet might sound difficult, especially with many popular dishes containing meat or other animal products. Yet in 2017, veganism was described as “the fastest - growing lifestyle movement” in the UK, according to BBC news.A study by a UK market research organization, suggests that over 542,000 Brits went vegan during the previous decade, an increase of 360%. And the main force behind this increase was those aged 15-34 years old — 42% of recent vegans fall under that age range. So why exactly has veganism become so popular among young Brits? One reason could be that many young people want to protect the environment, as less meat consumption is known to be beneficial to the environment. Global meat manufacturing is believed to cause 18% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions(排放), even more than that of all the world's cars, trains and planes combined. Another reason is that many of today's young people believe that it's wrong to kill animals to be used as food.Jess Murray, 22, a student at University College London, said that he chose to become vegan after realizing that eating animals is a choice that people make, rather than something that we need to do to survive. “Becoming vegan was an ethica l (道德的) decision,” he told the Guardian. Social media is also believed to have given rise to the increase in veganism. Platforms such as Facebook allow young vegans to connect with each other much easier, while others such as Instagram have led to the creation of “vegan celebrities (名人)”, who share lips on vegan lifestyles. Despite the rising of veganism, Laura Wyness, an expert in diet and nutrition, said that meat is very important for people's health. “A strict vegan diet makes it difficult to ge t some minerals and vitamins that your body needs,” Wyness told BBC news. However, the popularity of veganism doesn't seem to be fading. “It feels more like this is something that is sticking.” said an expert of the Vegan Society, a UK charity that pro motes veganism.(1)What can we learn about veganism, “the fastest-growing lifestyle movement” in UK?A. It has created many popular dishes.B. It is backed up mainly by old people.C. It has led to further market research.D. It has grown steeply in the past 10 years.(2)The following may account for the increase in veganism EXCEPT .A. Young people prefer an environment-friendly life.B. Young people want to become ethical celebrities.C. Meal manufacturing contributes a lot to the world's greenhouse gas.D. Social media allow the vegan message to spread quickly around.(3)The underlined word “sticking” in the Iasi paragraph is equal to in meaning.A. importantB. specialC. lastingD. impressive(4)Which of the following will serve as the best title of the passage?A. 语鹅市安置阳光实验学校阅读理解主旨大意题专练(三) 段落大意类A(2017·烟台诊断)Grandparents who help out occasionally with childcare in their community tend to live longer than seniors who do not care for other people, according to a study from Berlin, Germany.“Having no contact with grandchildren at all can negatively impact grandparents' health. This link could be deeply rooted in our evolutionary past when help with childcare was important for the survival of the human species,” said Sonja Hilbrand, one of the researchers. The findings are drawn from data on more than 500 people over age 70. Overall, after accounting for grandparents' age and general state of health, the risk of dying over a 20year period was onethird lower for grandparents who cared for their grandchildren, compared with grandparents who provided no childcare.Caregiving was associated with a longer life even when the care receiver wasn't a relative. Half of all childless seniors who provided support to friends or neighbors lived for seven years after the study beg an, while nonhelpers lived for four years on average.“Caregiving may give caregivers a purpose of life because they may feel useful for others and society. Caregiving may be thought also as an activity that keeps caregivers physically and mentally active,” said Professor Bruno Arpino.Arpino noted, however, that caregiving is not the only activity that can improve health and that too many caring responsibilities can take away from other beneficial activities like working, being in social clubs, or volunte ering. “Children should take_into_account their parents' needs, willingness, and desires and agree with them on the timing and amount of childcare,” he suggested.“It is very important that every individual decides forhimself/herself, what ‘proper amounts of help’ means,” Hilbrand said, adding, “As long as you do not feel stressed about the intensity (强度) of help you provide you may be doing something good for others as well as for yourself.”

What does the passage/author mainly discuss? What is the first/second paragraph mainly about? What is the main idea of the text? What is the text mainly about? What is the best title for the text? What can be a suitable title for the text? What's the purpose of the passage?

We ‘ve all been there: in a lift, in line at the bank or on an airplane, surrounded by people who are, like us, deeply focused on their smartphones or, worse, struggling with the uncomfortable silence. What ‘s the problem? It ‘s possible that we all have compromised conversational intelligence. It ‘s more likely that none of us start a conversation because it’s awkward and challenging, or we think it’s annoying and unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers, consider that small talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it’s an invaluable social practice that results in big benefits.Dismissing small talk as unimportant is easy, but we can’t forget that deep relationships wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for casual conversation. Small talk is the grease(润滑剂)for social communication, says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast.“Almost every great love story and each big business dealbegins with small talk,”he explains. “The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.”In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, associate professor of psychology at UBC, invited people on their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to seek out an interaction(互动)with its waiter; the other, to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported significantly higher positive feelings and a better coffee shop experience.“It’s not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband,”says Dunn.“But interactions with peripheral(边缘的)members of our social network matter for our well-being also.”Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a significantly greater sense of belonging, a bond with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense of belonging starts with small talk.“Small talk is the basis of good manners,”he says.35.What is the best title for the text?A.Conversation CountsB.Ways of Making Small TalkC.Benefits of Small TalkD.Uncomfortable Silence解析:中心句法。
