It's a topic of common –– and often comic –– contemplation, but it has also become a serious policy issue for colleges and students in the United States. After years of concentrated effort to raise the academic achievement of girls, who in previous decades had often received less attention in the classroom and been steered away from college-prep courses, the nation can brag that female students have progressed tremendously. Though still underrepresented in calculus and other advanced-level science and math courses in high school, women now outnumber men applying to and graduating from college ––so much so that it appears some colleges are giving male applicants an admissions boost. As a result, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights is examining whether colleges are engaging in widespread discrimination against women in an effort to balance their male and female populations.Consider some of the numbers at leading schools: At Vassar College in New York State, a formerly all-women's college that is still 60% female, more than two-thirds of the applicants last year were women. The college accepted 35% of the men who applied, compared with 20% of the women. Locally, elite Pomona College accepted 21% of male applicants for this year's freshman class, but only 13% of female applicants. At Virginia's College of William & Mary, 7,652 women applied for this year's freshman class, compared with 4,457 male applicants. Yet the numbers of each who gained admittance were nearly the same. That's because the college accepted 45% of the men and only 27% of the women.A 2007 analysis by U.S. News & World Report, based on the data sent by colleges for the magazine's annual rankings, found that the admissions rate for women averaged 13 percentage points lower than that for men. But percentages don't tell the whole story. It could be that the men were stronger candidates, or they might have applied in areas of engineering and science where women's numbers are still lower. But such justifications, even if true, are unlikely to fully explain these numbers. At schools such as the University of California, where admissions rely overwhelmingly on statistical measures of academic achievement such as grades and test scores, the disparities don't appear. Far more women than men applied to UCLA –– the UC's most selective campus –– last year. The university accepted about the same percentage of each, with a slight edge to the women. As a result, the freshman class has close to 800 more women than men.In recent years, several college leaders have admitted that their institutions give a boost to male applicants to maintain gender balance on campus. Most students of either sex, they point out, prefer suchbalance. If Vassar accepted equal percentages of each sex, women would outnumber men by more than 2 to 1.Jennifer Delahunty Britz, the dean of admissions at Kenyon College in Ohio, a formerly all-male school, brought the matter to broad public attention in 2006 with an Op-Ed article for the New York Times describing the dilemma of her admissions office. "What messages are we sending young women that they must . . . be even more accomplished than men to gain admission to the nation's top colleges?" New York Times has long favored allowing colleges to use race as an admissions factor in order to diversify student populations. She also wrote that exposure to people of different backgrounds and viewpoints better educates all students –– not just those given a leg up. We are not in favor of accepting underqualified or clearly inferior students for the sake of diversity. But most colleges are inundated with applications from students who more than meet their standards; the differences among many of them are slight. It makes sense for colleges to pick a balanced population from within this group. At the same time, admissions officers should avoid rigid notions of what constitutes enough men on campus. It's not harming UCLA, or destroying college social life, to admit somewhat more women than men.Even if the Civil Rights Commission finds pervasive gender discrimination in admissions, there's little it could do about the situation. Such discrimination ––though not racial discrimination ––is legal for undergraduate admissions at private, nonprofit colleges, even those that receive federal funding. Commission documents on the inquiry suggest that colleges could find more "gender-neutral" ways of balancing their student numbers, perhaps by offering programs and extracurricular activities that attract men. Those might work for some schools but won't change the overall scenario. Not with college populations composed of 57% women nationwide. The issue we'd like the Commission on Civil Rights to investigate is: What's happening with the education of U.S. boys? Why are so few of them applying to and graduating from college?Theories and arguments abound. Some say that boys are more active and thus less able to sit still for long periods ––and as a result, more likely to be categorized as having attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder or needing special education. A 2008 study by researchers at Northwestern University found that when girls are involved in a language-related task –– such as reading –– they show more activity in areas of the brain involved in encoding language. Boys use more sensory information to do linguistic tasks. The study suggests boys might do better if they were taught language and arts in different ways. Race is a factor as well. The gender gap is starker among African American and Latino students. There may be no one reason –– or solution. But figuring out ways to help boys achieve in school is abetter response to the gender gap than making it easier for them to get into college later.1. As a result of the effort to raise the academic achievement of the girls for years, the girls have exceeded boys tremendously in all courses in colleges except calculus and other advanced-level science and math courses.2. Female students are facing the low admission rate because some colleges are engaging in discrimination against women to achieve the balance of their male and female populations.3. Although the men were traditionally considered stronger candidates in areas of engineering and science, the admission rate for men in these areas is still lower than that for women.4. Women have outnumbered men in gaining admittance in UCLA’s freshman class this year because their admissions greatly rely on grades and test scores of their applicants.5. Some college leaders hold that most college students prefer their policy of maintaining gender balance by admitting equal percentages of each sex.6. The dilemma of the dean of admissions at Kenyon College is whether to use gender as an admissions factor in order to achieve gender balance or use race as an admissions factor in order to diversify student populations.7. According to Jennifer Delahunty Britz, it is reasonable for colleges to pick a balanced population from the candidates who more than meet their standards.8. Actually the Civil Rights Commission can do little to change the situation of discrimination in college admission because such discrimination is _____________.9. The study shows that in doing linguistic tasks the boys use more sensory information, the girls show more _____________.10. Despite various theories and arguments about why so few boys apply to and graduate from college, the better solution to the problem is to __________________________________.Section 3 Cloze (10%)Directions:In this section there are 20 blanks in the following passage. 上海交通大学英语讲义Exercise One 听力原文及答案

上海交通大学英语讲义Exercise One 听力原文及答案

Exercise OneSection pound Dictation. This is the VOA Special English Health Report.Rice is an important part of many people’s diets. (1)Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health in Massachusetts havereleased a report about rice. It shows that eating white rice increases the risk of Type Two diabetes. However, eating brown rice reduces the risk of the disease. The World Health Organization says more than two hundred twenty million people worldwide have diabetes. Type Two diabetes results when the body cannot (2) effectively use the sugar it produces.More than thirty-nine thousand men and one hundred fifty-seven thousand women took part in the study. They were asked about their diet and day-to-day activities, as well as any (3) pre-existing diseases. The study found that the people who ate five or more servings of white rice per week had a seventeen percent increased risk of (4)developing Type Two diabetes. But those who ate two or more servings of brown rice a week had an eleven percent reduced risk of getting the disease.Brown rice is the (5) grain in its natural form. White rice results after it has been refined. This involves (6) removing the outer cover, including the husk, bran and germ. Only the inner white kernel is left. White rice is often (7) enriched to replace some nutrients lost during the refining process.Qi Sun is the lead writer of the report. He says the outer parts of brown rice slow down the work of the body’s (8) digestive enzymes into starch. This means that the release of sugar into the bloodstream is slower after eating brown rice compared to white rice.A diet of foods that quickly release sugar into the bloodstream has been linked with a greater risk of Type two diabetes. (9) The exact reason for this is not known.(Please pause here for 30’’- 40’’)Doctor Sun says less refined grains have more nutritional value than refined grains. He says replacing white rice with whole grains like whole wheat or barley (10) could result in a thirty-six percent lower chance of developing Type Two diabetes. (Please pause here for 30’’- 40’’) He says people should replace white rice and other refined carbohydrates with whole grains whenever possible. However, brown rice does not last as long as white rice because of the oil-rich layer of bran. (11) This makes it less usable in poor communities. (Please pause here for 30’’- 40’’) The International Rice Research Institute is working to develop kinds of white rice whose starch is released more slowly. And, that’s the VOA Special EnglishHealth Report. I’m Steve Ember.Section 2. Note-takingKey:1. budget problems2. the weak economy3. increased prices for food and fuel4. property taxes and sales taxes5. were having budget problems6. receiving free or reduced price lunches at school7. finance public schools and to help young people attend collegeScript:Education Report - School, and Family, Budgets Under PressureFifty million public school children in America are starting a new school year. The number is a record high. Yet, at the same time, school systems in many areas are facing budget problems. The weak economy is not the only cause. Another reason has to do with increased prices for food and fuel. They mean higher costs for school meals and bus transportation. The United States will spend more than five hundred billion dollars on public education for the coming school year. The federal government helps pay, but the responsibility for education is mostly on state and local governments. Two major sources of money for public schools are property taxes and sales taxes. A slowdown in consumer spending, the engine of the economy, means fewer goods to tax. And the collapse of the housing market means less money to collect in property taxes.A report in July from the National Conference of State Legislatures said thirty-one of the fifty states were having budget problems. And the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities says school officials in at least eleven states have cut or proposed cuts in education.Florida, for example, has cut school aid by about two percent per student. State officials say tax collections are low and lottery sales have fallen by one hundred million dollars. Florida and many other states use money from sales of lottery tickets to help pay for education.Around the country, the economic slowdown has added to the numbers of children receiving free or reduced price lunches at school. In other words, many of the same economic problems that have hit school budgets have also hit family budgets. Each year, the education group Phi Delta Kappa and the Gallup organization gather opinions about American public schools. This year’s poll found support for increased use of federal taxes to finance public schools and to help young people attend college.People were also asked which presidential candidate they would vote for if they were voting on the basis of a desire to strengthen the public schools. Forty-six percent chose Democrat Barack Obama. Twenty-nine percent chose Republican John McCain. In the last two presidential elections, the poll found Americans equally split on which candidate would be more supportive of the schools.Section 3.Short Answering Questions.Foreign Student Series, Special English, VOAThis is the VOA Special English Education Report. This week, in part nine of our Foreign Student Series, we talk about getting a student visa to come to the United States.Just getting accepted to an American college or university does not guarantee that you will get a visa. And getting a visa just lets you arrive in the United States. It does not guarantee that an immigration officer will permit you to enter the country.Travel documents come from the Department of State. But (1) immigration is the responsibility of the Department of Homeland Security. The State Department has a Web site with all the rules for getting a visa. The address is . Unitedstatesvisas is all one word.(2) If you are requesting a visa for the first time, you will probably have to go to an American embassy or consulate. You will need to bring a government form sent to you by your American school that shows you have been accepted.(3) You will also need banking and tax records that show you have enough money to pay for your education. And be prepared to provide evidence that you will return to your home country after your studies end.All of this is important in satisfying the requirements to get a visa. A consular official will also take your picture and your fingerprints.Foreign students must contact their local embassy or consulate to request an interview and to get other information. This includes directions about how and where to pay the visa application charge. (4) The cost is two hundred dollars. You should apply for the visa as soon as you have been accepted to a school in the United States. The government needs time to perform a background investigation. You cannot receive a visa more than one hundred twenty days before the start of your program. And if you are coming as a student for the first time, (5) you cannot enter the country more than thirty days before classes begin.Once you come to the United States, you can stay for the length of your period of study. Your school is required to provide the Department of Homeland Security with reports on your status as a student. We will talk more about what that means next week. And that’s t he VOA Special English Education Report, written by Nancy Steinbach.Section 4. Listening and Translation到本世纪中这个比例可以达到70%,近65亿人口。

My Dream
Dreams are the wind for our sails on the ocean. Dreams kindle a flame to illuminate our dark roads. Dreams protect our hearts. Martin Luther King had a dream — it was to have justice for all people. Lincoln had a dream — it was to set the slaves free. They sought their dreams and finally made them come true. I have a dream, which is to help those people who need help. There are too many wars and disasters. About 16,000 people have died in the Iraq War and one child dies every eight seconds in Africa because of starvation. I have dreams, you have dreams and they have dreams too. We should help them. We should save their lives so they can pursue their own dreams. As the lyric of a song goes, “We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let’s start giving.” Well, that’s my dream, a simple but meaningful dream.

Then she settled in, placed her briefcase on her lap and rested her cane against her leg.

That night when everyone went to bed, Bunny couldn't sleep. He still couldn't think of what he wanted his special Christmas present to be. He wondered how Santa would know what to bring him if he didn't know himself. As he was sitting up in bed, Bunny heard a big noise on the roof and a sound downstairs. It was Santa Claus, he realized. Bunny jumped out of bed and raced down the hall to the stairs hoping to catch a glimpse of the old fellow before Santa departed for his next stop. By the time Bunny reached the bottom of the stairs, though, everything was again silent. Brightly wrapped presents were piled under the Christmas tree, but Santa was gone. A little disappointed, Bunny turned to climb back upstairs when he heard a cry. "Hello," said Bunny. "Is somebody there?" He was answered by another cry. Bunny looked around the big pile of presents to see what was making the noise. Right under the tree was a funny looking brown animal with big feet and mournful eyes. Bunny might have mistaken the creature for a dog, if it hadn't been for the antlers (鹿角) on his head."Are you a reindeer?" asked Bunny. "Yes," replied the brown creature with antlers, "my name is Ralph." "And you were pulling Santa's sled?" "I was until I got air-sick," replied Ralph, "Santa had to leave me here and go on with the other seven reindeer." "Isn't it a bit unusual for a reindeer to get air-sick. I mean, isn't flying what reindeer are famous for?" "I'm afraid that I've always had a sensitive (敏感的) stomach when itcomes to flying," replied Ralph. "But everyone expected me to pull Santa's sled, so when it was my turn I gave it a try. I'm afraid I just wasn't cut out for the job. Now I'm stuck here and I don't know how to get back to the North Pole." "Well, if you like, you can stay with us as a friend," said Bunny. Researchers at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles published their work in the "New England Journal of Medicine". About one thousand seven hundred children from different communities in Southern California took part in the study. The scientists tested the children every year for eight years, starting at age ten. They say this is the longest study ever done on air pollution and the health of children. The scientists found that children who lived in areas with the dirtiest air were five times more likely to grow up with weak lungs. Many were using less than eighty percent of normal lung strength to breathe. The damage from dirty air was as bad as that found in children with parents who smoke. Children with reduced lung power may suffer more severe effects from a common cold, for example. But the researchers express greater concerns about long-term effects. They say adults normally begin to lose one percent of their lung power each year after age twenty. The doctors note that weak lung activity is the second leading cause of early deaths among adults. The first is smoking. By the time people are eighteen, their lungs are fully developed, or close to it. The doctors say it is impossible to recover from any damage. Researchers say they are still not sure how airpollution affects lung development. They believe that pollution affects the tiny air spaces where oxygen and carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) are exchanged. Arden Pope is an economics professor at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Professor Pope wrote a commentary about the study. He noted that air quality in Southern Californiahas improved since the study began in the early nineteen-nineties. Clean-air laws have reduced pollution from vehicles, industry and other causes. Some train names are romantic, such as Adventureland,Sunset, and Argonaut; others use the names of birds, animals, trees, and flowers, even an insect (the Frisco Road’s Firefly). But in all history only fourpassenger trains have ever been named directly for American women: Pocahontas, Ann Rutledge, Kate Shelly, and Nellie Bly.N ote the word “directly”. In 1892 a horse called Nancy Hanks, probably named for Abraham Lincoln’s mother, set a new world’s racing record —a mile in 2.04 minutes. because the name stood for speed and grace, the Central of Georgia Railway gave it to a new passenger engine. A speed recorder showed that the train covered a mile in 39 seconds. And on January 8, 1893, the Nancy Hanks made its first round trip in regular service between Atlanta and Savannah, with J. Green Freeney being the engineer.T he Nancy Hanks lasted only seven months because, folklore has it, it was too costly, too progressive, too fast, and too dangerous. In August 1893, the Nancy Hanks made its last run, with engineer Freeney at the controls of his “Little Girl Blue”. Maybe, as Freeney’s son put it, the train died because it was “too popular”. Thus “the fastest train on the earth”, as it was named, died young. The horse it was named for lived nearly thirty years, until 1915, and was buried about three miles out of Lexington, Kentucky.41. According to this passage, all the following have been used for a name of a trainEXCEPT ________?A. a geographical locationB. a popular songC. an insectD. a famous man42. The following statements about the horse are true EXCEPT ________.A. it could run a mile in less than 2 minutesB. it was probably named for Abraham Lincoln’s motherC. it set a new world record for racing speedD.it was named Nancy Hanks43. The pronoun “it” (line3, para. 2) refers to ________.A. the name, Nancy HanksB. the horse, Nancy HanksC. the train, Nancy HanksD.the speed of Nancy Hanks44. Information about the reason for the train’s death comes from ________.A. history booksB. records of train tickets sold in 1893C. a record kept by the railroadD. stories that people tell each other45. The other name given by the engineer to the train was ________.A. Frisco Road’s FireflyB. Little Girl BlueC. J. Green FreeneyD.GeorgiaPassage FourQuestions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage:It’s not difficult to figure out the connection between the heart and Valentine’s Day (情人节). The heart, after all, was thought in ancient times to be the source of all emotions. It later came to be associated only with emotion of love. (Today, we know that the heart is, basically, the pump that keeps blood flowing through our bodies.)I t’s not clear when the valentine heart shape became the symbol for the heart (we all know the heart isn’t really shaped like that). Some scholars speculate that the heart symbol as we use it to signify romance or love came from early attempts by people to draw an organ they’d never seen. Anyway, here are some of the other valentine symbols and their origins:●Red roses were said to be the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love; also, red is a color that suggests strong feelings.●Lase (花边) has long been used to make women’s handkerchief. Hundreds of years ago, if a woman dropped her handkerchief, a man might pick it up for her. Sometimes, if she had her eye on the right man, a woman might intentionally dropher handkerchief to encourage him. So people began to think of romance when they thought of lace.●Love knots (结) have a number of circles with no beginning and no end. A symbol of everlasting love, love knots were made from ribbon or drawn on paper.●Lovebirds, colorful birds found in Africa, are so named because they sit closely together in pairs — like sweethearts do! Doves are symbols of loyalty and love, because they become couples for life and share the care of their babies.46. The word “speculate” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to ________.A. supposeB. disagreeC. questionD. expect47. All of the following statements are true EXCEPT ________.A .it is easy to determine the relationship between the heart and Valentine’sDay.B. the heart became connected with all emotions before it was a sign of loveC. people in ancient times drew the heart based on their observation.D. the color of red is associated with strong emotions48. According to the passage, women used ________ to encourage men to declaretheir love.A. red rosesB. love laceC. love knotsD. lovebirds49. According to the passage, for lifelong love, the most probable picture a manwould send to the girl he loves is that of ________.A. a roseB. a handkerchiefC. a love knotD. a bird50. The best title for this passage is ________.A. Gifts for LoversB. Marriage CustomsC.A Holiday of LoveD Symbols of LovePart III Translation1. Translate the following sentences into Chinese:1.
