They said he would never make it.But Duane Hansen and his beautiful pumpkin, which he named Berta, proved them all wrong. Like Cinderella's fairy godmother, this Nebraska man proved that you really can turn a pumpkin into a functional vehicle—in this case, a seaworthy vessel(船).Yes, you read that right. Hansen wanted to celebrate his 60th birthday by hollowing out his prized 846-pound pumpkin and sailing down the Missouri River inside it. Not only did Hansen enjoy a pumpkin sail on his special day, but his 38-mile journey also landed him a world record! In case you wondered, the previous world record for the longest sail in a pumpkin was 25 miles, set by a North Dakota man in 2018.It wasn't an easy journey. Growing a pumpkin big enough to use as a boat is already a challenge. Then, there was his chosen waterway. The city of Bellevue, Nebraska, posted a photogragh of Hansen on the water that offers a reminder of just how big the Missouri River is."He has always said that you can do anything you want and I'm just so proud," Hansen's daughter Morgan Buchholz said.Hansen reportedly spent nearly a decade trying to grow a pumpkin big enough to work as a sailing vessel. He was inspired to begin his mission after meeting a woman who had previously won "the Biggest Pumpkin Competition". He asked her many questions about her experience. As for his pumpkin-sailing future, "I'm done with this." Hansen said that the voyage made his knees ache. The wake(尾流) from boats was rough, and when they passed, he said he had to stop everything andjust hang on. "If somebody breaks this record, I will, like, bow down to them because they are tough," he said.4. Why did Hansen go on a pumpkin journey?A. To observe his birthday.B. To show his prized pumpkin.C. To break a world record.D. To prove pumpkin could be a vessel.5. What did Hansen do to make his journey possible?A. He chose a calm waterway.B. He talked with the previous record holder.C. He convinced his family to support his plan.D. He worked a long time to grow the pumpkin.6. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. His knees got seriously injured in the sailing.B. It is never too old to learn.B. Time and tide wait for no man.C. Where there's a will, there's a way.D. Fear always springs from ignoranceCAs the climate crisis speeds up, Europe is warming faster than any other region, according to a new State of the Climate in Europe report from the World Meteorological Organization. The WMO report comes ahead of the UN's international climate summit in Egypt, and is one in a series of reports over the past several weeks that show how the world is off-track on its climate goals. Notonly are countries missing the mark on their efforts to reduce planet-warming fossil fuel emissions(排放物), but measurements show temperatures are already skyrocketing. Some continents are feeling that rise more than others. Wednesday's report shows temperatures in Europe have increased at more than twice the global average over the past 30 years—at a rate of about 0.5 degrees Celsius per decade.Recent reports show how the region's temperature rise is fueling extreme weather.Year-to-date through July, the number of wildfires in the EU was four times the 15-year average. A deadly, record-breaking heatwave in the UK harmed public health and bent infrastructure (基础设施). Exceptional drought troubled the continent this summer, drying up some of the world's most economically important rivers. And that drought that came on the heels of some of the most destructive floods Europe has ever seen."Europe presents a live picture of a warming world and reminds us that even well-prepared societies are not safe from impacts of extreme weather events," said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas in a forward on the report."European society is vulnerable(易受伤害的) to climate variability and change, but Europe is also at the forefront of the international effort to address climate change and to develop innovative solutions to adapt to the new climate. Europeans will have to live with," Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, said in a statement.Taalas said in his forward that although Europe's pace on cutting planet-warming emissions has been "good", their ambition on this front "should be further increased".8. What can we learn about the world's climate goals from the WMO report?A. They are unrealistic.B. They are easy to reach.C. They are taken seriously.D. They are far from being achieved.9. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?A. The economic losses in Europe.B. The causes of the climate crisis in Europe.C. The increase of extreme weather in Europe.D. The most destructive natural disaster in Europe.10. What is Buontempo's attitude towards Europe's effort to fight climate change?A. Doubtful.B. Favorable.C. Unclear.D. Intolerant.11. What should Europe do to further cut emissions according to Taalas?A. Take the lead.B. Set a higher goal.C. Make better preparations.D. Carry on their good work.DU.S. teens spend more than eight hours a day on screens, and there's growing concern over how social media may affect their mental health. Now, a new study has found that limiting screen time to about one hour a day helped anxious teens feel better about their body image and their appearance. The study arose from the personal experience of Helen Thai, a doctoral student in psychology at MeGill University. "What I noticed when I was engaging in social media was that I couldn't help but compare myself," Thai says. She was well aware that social media posts often feature polished, airbrushed or filtered images that can alter(改变) appearances in an unrealistic way, but it still affected her negatively. So, Thai and a team of researchers decided to test whether cutting time on social media platforms including Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat would improve body image. They recruited a few hundred volunteers, all of whom had experienced symptoms of anxiety or depression, which could make them vulnerable to the effects of social media. Half of the participants were asked to reduce their social media to 60 minutes a day for three weeks while the other half continued to use social media with no restrictions, which averaged about three hours per day.The researchers gave the participants surveys at the beginning and end of the study, which included statements such as "I'm pretty happy about the way I look," and "I am satisfied with my weight." Among the group that cut social media use, the overall score on appearance improved from 2.95 to 3.15 on a5-point scale. This may seem like a small change, but any shift in such a short period of time is striking, the authors say."The study is encouraging, but it only included people who had symptoms of anxiety or depression. It's worth evaluating this approach with other groups, such as people with or at risk of eating disorders. It's also possible that the benefits of cutting back could extend more broadly to anyone in this age group," says Psychologist Andrea Graham, co-director of the Center for Behavioral Intervention at Northwestern University.12. What problem may social media bring to teenagers according to Thai?A. They may become addicted to the Internet.B. They tend to become sensitive to others' comments.C. They may have unrealistic expectations of their image.D. They tend to compare themselves with the images posted online.13. What can we learn about the participants during the study?A. They scored their appearance twice.B. Half of them stopped using social media.C. They hoped to improve their body image.D. Most of them showed dissatisfaction with their weight.14. What did Graham think of the study?A. It was a good try but had limitations.B. It was well designed but poorly conducted.C. It was a failure but the methods deserved praise.D. It was encouraging but the evidence was unreliable.15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?A. Shorter Screen Time, Better Feelings on LookB. How to Help Teenagers Limit Screen timeC. How Social Media Changes TeenagersD. Less Anxiety, Better Image二、阅读七选五(本大题共5小题,共10.0分)Any time of the day you can commit to exercising is a good time for getting active. However, the best time for exercise is different for each person. A Are you looking for something to do? You might like to try one of these four experiences.Crocodile watching Do you fancy getting up close to some of the most terrifying animals on earth? Crocosaurus Cove, in Darwin (Australia) has the “Cage of Death”. It’s an enclosure th at’s lowered into a pool. This gives you a 360 degree view of a crocodile as it’s being fed. The cable broke once and the cage sank to the bottom, but they’ve fixed it since then. EdgeWalk How about walking along the edge of a building several hundred meters up in the air? If that sounds like fun, head off to the CN Tower in Toronto (Ontario, Canada). Built in 1976, the tower is 553.33 meters tall. The EdgeWalk consists of a 20-30 minute stroll along a 1.5 meter wide platform that runs around the tower’s restaurant roof. During the walk, you’re encouraged to lean forwards as you look over Toronto’s skyline(轮廓线).Plastic ball rollingDo you fancy rolling down a hill in a plastic ball? Plastic ball rolling is popular all over the world, but the place to give it a go is in Rotorua (New Zealand). Brother David and Andrew Akers came up with the idea in 1994. A typical orb (球) is about 3 meters in diameter, with an inner orb size of about 2 meters. There’s no brake or steering mechanism, but the inner layer of the plastic ball helps absorb the shock.Volcano bungee jumping If you’re looking for the adventure of a lifetime, how about going bungee jumping off a helicopter into the crater of a live volcano? As part of the jumping, a helicopter ride takes you to the Villarrica volcano, one of the most active in Chile. Once you ’re at the drop zone, you leap off the helicopter and fall into the volcano. The RFID Bikealarm is attached to the seat on a bicycle and gives off an alarm when it senses movement.“The RFID Bikealarm is meant to be a useful add-on to mechanical bicycle locks because it greatly extends the range of protection with only a few components,” Siegel explains on his website. “It is low-cost, durable and easy to use.”The Bikealarm was designed as part of Siegel’s Bachelor’s degreethesis at the University of the Arts Bremen in Germany. The device will scare off any would-be thieves the moment they begin to steal the bicycle to which it is attached. It is able to continuously sense the environment to distinguish between specific events, for instance a passing tram / car and a serious theft.Siegel created a working model of an alarm that would sound when it sensed movement, but wasn’t initially sure how it would be best attached to a bicycle. “I decided to mount it to the rails of the seat because it allows for comfortable interaction and the position is less obvious as it looks like a small repair kit,” he says.Siegel chose to use RFID technology rather than Bluetooth to keep the costs down. Siegel explains that the most difficult aspect of creating the alarm was to get the electronic circuit down to a small enough size. The device runs off a kind of battery that can be charged by USB within 2 hours and lasts for a few days with normal use. As the Bikealarm is only at development stage, Siegel hasn’t signed any agreements to put it on the market.4. When it senses movement, the RFID Bikealarm will _____.A. make a warning soundB. fasten the bicycle tightlyC. shake the bicycle quicklyD. call the police automatically5. Which of the following shows the right position of the RFID Bikealarm on a bicycle?6. What do we know about the RFID Bikealarm? A. It can’t tell between specif ic events. B. I suddenly thought we didn’t need any of the junk, and we abandoned all of those, saving $300. That got me thinking about all our pointless expenses in life. With a promise that we’d stop if it was killing us, I convinced the family to take the leap into frugality(节俭). The rules were that we would buy nothing for 30 days except absolutely essentials. Our adventure began with a great start. By 9 a.m., my wife, Ruth, had already made cakes from old strawberries and picked flowers I didn’t even know we had in the garden. I cleared the car by hand for the first time for years. I read and returned the neighbor’s newspaper before he woke up. Total spending on the first day: $0.As days turned into weeks, we became so proficient (熟练的)at living frugally. We started riding our bikes to save gas. My child’s fingerpainting was recycled as gift wrap for the homemade presents. We started to use an Internet application like Skype for free phone calls and ask neighbors with gardens for extra vegetables and herbs. In the end, we saved more than $2000 by not spending for a month. The Atlantic has, in a sense, replaced the Mediterranean as the inland sea of Western civilization. Unlike real inland seas, which seem strangely still, the Atlantic is rich in oceanic liveliness. It is perhaps not surprising that its vitality has been much written about by ancient poets.“Storm at Sea”, a short poem written around 700, is generally regarded as one of mankind’s earliest artistic representations of t he Atlantic. When the wind is from the westAll the waves that cannot restTo the east must thunder on Where the bright tree of the sun Is rooted in the ocean’s breast. As the poem suggests, the Atlantic is never dead and dull. It is an ocean that moves, impressively and endlessly. It makes all kinds of noise-it is forever thundering, boiling, crashing, and whistling. It is easy to imagine the Atlantic trying to draw breath-perhaps not so noticeably out in mid-ocean, but where it meets land, its waters bathing up and down a sandy beach. It mimics(模仿)nearly perfectly the steady breathing of a living creature. It is filled with symbiotic existences, too: unimaginable quantities of creatures, little and large alike, mix within its depths in a kind of oceanic harmony, giving to the waters a feeling of heartbeat, a kind of sub-ocean vitality. And it has a psychology. It has personalities: sometimes peaceful and pleasant, on rare occasions rough and wild; always it is strong and striking.12. Unlike real inland seas, the Atlantic Ocean is __________.A. always energeticB. lacking in livelinessC. shaped like a squareD. favored by ancient poets13. What is the purpose of using the poem “Storm at Sea” in the passage?A. To describe the movement of the waves.B. To show the strength of the storm.C. To represent the power of the ocean.D. To prove the vastness of the sea.14. What doe s the underlined word “symbiotic” mean?A. Living together.B. Growing fast.C. Moving harmoniously.D. Breathing peacefully.15. In the last paragraph, the Atlantic is compared to __________.A. a beautiful and poetic placeB. a flesh and blood personC. a wonderful worldD. a lovely animal第二节(共5 小题;每小题2 分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

It doesn’t matter if you’re6or60.It appeals to the optimistic young idealism that I think every person has, however buried it might be.”56.What can we learn from the first paragraph?A.People should keep digging into the history of ancient myths.B.More products associated with Star Wars have been created.C.Some people’s criticism of Star Wars made it less popular than before.D.Star Wars is more successful in the business field than in the entertainment field.57.Why did George Lucas invent Star Wars?A.To break the old rules and traditions of making films.B.To appeal to the optimistic young men to pursue their dreams.C.To encourage other filmmakers to bring their wild ideas to life.D.To offer young people an as good and healthy fantasy life as he had.58.Star Wars can have such a great influence mainly because______.A.it meets people’s pursuit for a place to escapeB.it symbolizes the beginning of the modern mythC.the special effects offer amazing viewing experienceD.the main actors in this film are very popular among the public59.This passage is written to_____________.A.inspire people to be optimistic and idealB.introduce the basic information about Star WarsC.recommend the talented writer-director George LucasD.criticize the fact that Star Wars is not as well made as before(B)Looking for a career change?Check out these unconventional options! The Waterslide TesterWhen the pool where he worked as a lifeguard was closed during the COVID-19pandemic, Guillaume Pop took jobs at various other pools that were virtually deserted. In one video on the social platform,he pretended to be a“professional waterslide tester”.Unexpectedly,Pop became a social media sensation. He was then hired to“test”slides and other facilities at water parks and swimming pools all over France.“It’s the best job in the world,”declares Pop,whose videos have received80million views.“I’m not behind a desk.I’m active and outside in the sun.In fact, all the children tell me they want to be a waterslide tester!”The Reindeer HerderFinnish Lapland is home to around200,000wild reindeer.Anne Ollila, one of the4,000 owners of these animals, works in this harsh but beautiful region with her big family. She gave up her job as a sociology researcher in2010to devote herself to reindeer herding full time.In summer,Ollila sleeps during the day and walks up to12miles a night through marsh and forest, enduring all kinds of insects. In deepest winter there is little daylight.Grasslands are frozen and the reindeer move into the forest for protection.“Life here isn’t easy but it’s how nature works,”says Ollila,“I love the environment, the animals and the freedom. Also,I have a sense of belonging to something bigger than me,to the chain of life through the generations.”The Zombie TrainerStevie Douglas,a52-year-old Scot, has taught people how to behave like all varieties of the undead.A big fan of horror movies,Douglas noticed the zombies he saw in films were often unconvincing.“Their movement was poor and I thought I could do better.”So,in2012,he formed ScareScotland to provide zombies for films and events such as horror conventions.A year later they started a zombie training program, which took off when they received a request for300 zombies for a three-week-long interactive production.“What we do is very specific.”says Douglas. Many people enjoy being frightened, and he’s happy to oblige them.60.What do the three people introduced in the passage above have in common?A.Their jobs are dangerous, unstable and low-paid.B.Their jobs are well received throughout the world.C.They have great passion and pride in what they do.D.They need professional qualifications to do their job.61.What does Guillaume Pop like most about his job?A.It has a sense of freedom.B.It is full of vigor and energy.C.It is what he has been doing for decades.D.It satisfies people’s wishes to be frightened.62.Who is most probably interested in this passage?A.Employees who are considering switching jobs.B.Students who are applying for ideal universities.C.Children who are interested in unusual activities.D.Graduates who are deciding on their essay topics.(C)The phrase“coin toss”is a classic equivalent to randomness. But since atleast the18th century, mathematicians have suspected that even fair coins tendto land on one side slightly more often than the other.Proving this tiny bias(偏见),however, would require hundreds of thousands of carefully recordedcoin tosses, making laboratory tests a nightmare.František Bartoš,currently a Ph.D.candidate at the University of Amsterdam, became fascinated by this challenge four years ago.He couldn’t round up enough volunteers to investigate it at first.“Nobody was stupid enough to spend a couple of weekends tossing coins,”he says. But after he began his Ph.D.studies,he tried again,recruiting47volunteers(many of them friends and fellow students)from six countries.Multiple weekends of coin tossing later, the team had performed350,757tosses,breaking the previous record of40,000.The tossed coins, according to previous findings, landed with the same side facing upward as before the toss50.8percent of the time. The large number of throws allows statisticians to conclude that the nearly one percent bias isn’t a fluke.“We can be quite sure there is a bias in coin tosses after this data set,”Bartošsays. The leading theory explaining the subtle advantage comes from a2007physics study by statistician Persi Diaconis and his colleagues, whose calculations predicted a same-side bias of 51percent.From the moment a coin is launched into the air,its entire path in the air—including whether it lands on heads or tails—can be calculated by the laws of mechanics. The researchersdetermined that coins in the air barely turn around their symmetrical axis(对称轴);instead they tend to move off-center unsteadily, which causes them to spend a little more time in the air with their initial“up”side on top.For day-to-day decisions, coin tosses are as good as random because a one percent bias isn’t perceptible with just a few coin tosses, says another statistician who wasn’t involved in the new research.Still, the study’s conclusions should eliminate any doubt that still exists regarding the coin toss’s slim bias.It isn’t difficult to prevent this bias from influencing your coin-toss matches;simply concealing the coin’s starting position before tossing it should do the trick.Alternatively, you can do away with tossing altogether by shaking the coin between your palms. But if your friends are unaware of the tiny bias, you may as well benefit from your slight advantage. After all,51percent odds beat a lot.63.Why was it difficult to prove the tiny bias in coin tosses?A.Because it required a large number of trials and loads of tests.B.Because few scientists and researchers were interested in this topic.C.Because scientists lacked the ability and technique to conduct this study.D.Because previous researches failed many times and scientists lost confidence.64.The meaning of the underlined word fluke in paragraph3most probably refers to somethingthat____________.A.happens by accidentB.can be planned in advanceC.occurs under specific conditionsD.can be gained by practice65.What can we imply from the last paragraph?A.This one percent bias matters little in real life.B.We should rely on this one percent bias to help us.C.Though unnoticeable,we may still take advantage of this bias.D.Relying on the one percent bias to win a Thanks to information online, young consumers no longer blindly pursue foreign brands and instead prefer local brands, highlighting their confidence in Chinese-made products. From Li-Ning, Anta to Warrior shoes, domestic brands in various fields are being warmly welcomed by youngconsumers.IV.Summary WritingDirections:Read the following passage.Summarize the main idea and the main point(s)of the passage in no more e your own words as far as possible.71.The ingredients of loveIn modern times, finding love seems more central to people’s lives. Then, researchers wonder, can love,a highly valued emotional state,be created? To help determine the ingredients of attraction, one research paired164college classmates and had them talk for3,6or10minutes to get a sense of each other’s individuality. Then students were asked to predict what kind of relationship they might build with their partners. After nine weeks, they reported what happened.Reports showed their initial judgments often held true. All these students seemed to distinguish at an early stage who would best fit into their lives.Scientists have also turned to nonhumans to increase understanding of attraction. Many animals give off pheromones—natural chemicals that can be detected by,and then can produce a response in,other animals of the same species.Pheromones can signal that an animal is either ready to fight or is feeling open to partnerships. In contrast, humans do not seem to be as gifted as other animals at detecting such chemicals.Smell, however, does seem to play a part in human attraction.Although we may not be aware of chemicals like pheromones consciously,we give and receive loads of information through smell in every interaction with other people.Being fond of someone seems to have a number of factors, including seeing something we find attractive.Researchers had people judge faces for attractiveness. The participants had0.013 seconds to view each face, yet somehow they generally considered the images the same as people who had more time to study the same faces. The way we assess attractiveness seems to be somewhat automatic. When shown an attractive face and then words with good or bad associations, people responded to positive words faster after viewing an attractive face.Seeing something attractive seems to cause happy thinking.V.TranslationDirections:Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.72.中国文化产业充当着文化交流的桥梁。

It all began with a simple game she programmed in her Los Angeles public school's Grade 2class. Today ,at18,the Grade 12 student's initial curiosity has evolved into a deep-seated desire to use technology to decode(解码)real-world problems. In 2021, she co-developed Megaphone, one of her first apps, to tackle unanswered post- class questions and poor communication about events and announcements. Her problem-solving ability kept building from there. When she took online CPR classes at the start of the pandemic, she figured it couldn't be just her who was struggling with the steps. So she created an app called CPR Buddy―a winner in the 2022 Apple Swift Challenge―which guides users through CPR using vibrations(震动) to regulate breath. After winning theaward, Angelina presented her work to Apple CEO Tim Cook, a highlight in her young career, but one she didn't lose her cool over. “There's no point putting people on a pedestal (神坛),”she says. The next year, Angelina built an app called Lilac, designed to assist nonEnglish-speaking single parents with resources for housing, job opportunities and translation support. She was inspired by her own experiences as a child of a single mother who immigrated to the US.When Angelina decided to pursue pilot training at the age of 16, she was struck by how difficult it was to find financial support, which encouraged her to create yet another app, Pilot Fast Track, which helps those longing to be pilots find scholarships for flight training.Looking to the future, besides applying to colleges with great labs, Angelina is exploring the field of aerospace cybersecurity and mechatronics―combining computer science, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering.“There's not enough optimism in the world," she says. “I have also been in situations in my life where I've lost a lot of hope. But in the end, it is a mindset, and there are ways in any situation you're in to make it somewhat better."4.What is Angelina's pursuit?A. To design games for kids.B. To stimulate teen's curiosity.C. To address problems through technology.D. To find innovative approaches to digital challenges.5.What can we learn about Angelina from Paragraph 3?A. She couldn't breathe regularly.B. She was inspired by celebrities.C. She replaced CPR with an app.D. She was humble about her success.6.What was the primary goal of developing Pilot Fast Track?A. To direct pilots' career paths.B. To help to-be pilots find funds.C. To pair future pilots with airlines.D. To evaluate pilot training schools.7. What might be the best title?A. Breaking the codeB. Bearing growing painsC. Facing life as it isD. Following role modelsCSome people today might be early risers because of DNA they take after Neanderthals tens of thousands of years ago, suggests new research. When early humans migrated from Africa to Eurasia roughly 70,000 years ago, some of them mated with Neanderthals, who had already adapted to the colder, darker climates of the north. The ripple(涟漪) effects of that intermating still exist today: Modern humans of non- African ancestry(血统)have between 1 and 4 percent Neanderthal DNA. Some of that DNA relates to sleep more specifically, the internal body clock known as the circadian rhythm. For the new study, researchers compared DNA from today's humans and DNA from Neanderthal fossils(化石).In both groups, they found some of the same genetic variants involved with the circadian rhythm. And they found that modern humans who carry these variants also reported being early risers. For Neanderthals, being “morning people” might not have been the real benefit of carrying these genes. Instead, scientists suggest, Neanderthals’ DNA gave them faster, more flexible internal body clocks, which allowed them to adjust more easily to annual changes in daylight. This connection makes sense in the context of human history. When early humans moved north out of Africa, they would have experienced variable daylight hours--shorter days in the winter and longer days in the summer-for the first time. The Neanderthals' circadian rhythm genes likely helped early humans' offspring(后代)adapt to this new environment.Notably ,the findings do not prove that Neanderthal genes are responsible for the sleep habits of all early risers. Lots of different factors beyond genetics can contribute , including social and environmental influences. The study also only included DNA from a database called the U.K. Biobank-so the findings may not necessarily apply to all modern humans. Next, the research team hopes to study other genetic databases to see if the same link holds true for people of other ancestries. If the findings do apply more broadly , they may one day be useful for improving sleep in the modern world, where circadian rhythms are disturbed by night shifts and glowing smartphones.8.What does the new research focus on?A. DNA's dramatic changes.B. Genes’ influence on early risers.C. Neanderthals’ sleeping patterns.D. Ancestors’ environmental adaptability.9.What is paragraph 2 intended to show concerning the new research?A. Historical context.B. Additional proof.C. Sample analysis.D. Studying process.10. What is the real benefit of carrying Neanderthal's DNA for modern humans?A .Getting up earlier. B. Having healthier daily routines.C. Being more flexible in their work.D. Possessing a better circadian rhythm.11. What can be inferred about the findings from the last paragraph?A. They get proof from other studies.B. They are confirmed by early risers.C. They suggest potential applications.D. They reveal factors in sleeping disorders.DI had to say something after reading The Anxious Generation. It is going to sell well , because Jonathan Haidt is telling a scary story about children's development many parents are led to believe. However, the book's repeated suggestion that digital technologies are rewiring our children's brains and causing the epidemic (流行病)of mental illness is unsupported by science. Worse , the rude proposal that social media is to blame might distract (分心)us from effectively responding to the real causes of the current mental-health crisis in young people.Researchers have searched for the effects suggested by Haidt. Our efforts have produced a mix of no, small and mixed associations. Most data are correlative. When associations over time are found, they suggest not that social-media use predicts or causes depression, but that young people who already have mental-health problems use such platforms more often or in different ways from their healthy peers. We are not alone here. Several analyses and systematic reviews centralize on the same message. An analysis done in 72 countries shows no consistent or measurable associations between well-being and social media globally. Moreover, studies from some authorities finds no evidence of intense changes associated with digital-technology use.As a psychologist studying children's and adolescents’ mental health, I appreciate parents’frustration(沮丧)and desire for simple answers. As a parent of adolescents, I would also like to identify a simple source for the pain this generation is reporting. There are, however, no simple answers. The beginning and development of mental disorders are driven by a complex set of genetic and environmental factors.More young people are talking openly about their mental-health struggles than ever before. But insufficient services are available to address their needs. In the United States, there is, on average, one school psychologist for every 1,119 students. We have a generation in crisis and in desperate need of the best of what science and evidence-based solutions can offer. Unfortunately, our time is being spent telling stories that are unsupported by research and that do little to support young people who need, and deserve, more.12.What is presented in The Anxious Generation?A. Scary stories affect children's brains.B. Parents are responsible for children's health.C. Teen's mental illness results from screen time.D. The epidemic of mental illness is unavoidable.13.What does “the same message ”underlined in paragraph 3 refer to?A. Many countries do research in mental health.B. Well-being and social media are closely related.C. The young are trapped in the mental-health crisis,D. Social media don't necessarily cause mental illness.14. What is implied in the last paragraph?A. Effective actions need to be taken.B. Positive stories should be shared.C. Financial support needs to be provided.D. Broader research should be done.15.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?A. To suggest ways to help those in need.B. To encourage parents to brave the crisis.C. To recommend a newly-published book.D. To give a voice to children's mental issues.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Anthony Doerr’s new bestseller, All the Light We Cannot See, holds special appeal for me. That’s how I would describe it. From the poetic language, to the realization of what the tile actually means: that underneath the surface of history, there is light that has not been seen, and stories that have gone untold.I’m going to be honest-love for this book didn’t hit me straight away. In fact, my first attempt to read it last month ended with me putting it aside and going to find something easier, lighter and less descriptive to read. But this book is built on beautiful imagery. Both in the literal sense-the physical world of 1940s Paris and Germany, and the metaphorical (隐喻性的)sense-scientific and philosophical references to light, to seeing and not seeing, and the differences between the two. It’s a beautiful work of genius, but it does get a little complicated at times. However, when we get into the meat of this World War II novel, it’s also an upsetting story of a childhood torn apart by war. It’s about Parisian Marie Laure who has been blind since she was six, and a German orphan called Werner who finds himself at the center of the Hitler Youth. Both of their stories are told with sensitivity and sympathy, each one forced down a path by their personal circumstances and by that destructive monster-war.I think this is the kind of book you will never appreciate if you stop too soon-I learned that lesson. From the first to last page, there is a theme of invisible lines running parallel (平行的)to one another and sometimes, just sometimes, crossing in the strangest way. These two lives we are introduced to seem to be worlds apart, and yet they come together and influence one another. It was this, more than the predictably awful tale of war, that made me feel quite emotional.1. What does the writer think of the book?A.Light and easy to read.B.Rich in philosophical ideas.C.Fascinating but too descriptive.D.Too complicated for its theme.2. What can we learn about Marie Laure and Werner?A.The war leads to their sensitivity.B.They know each other at an early age.C.The Hitler Youth pushes them to grow.D.They both have a miserable childhood.3. What particularly stirred the writer’s emotions?A.The book’s dramatic ending.B.The book’s beautiful imagery.C.The characters’ interconnected destiny.D.The suffering brought by World War II.4. What is the purpose of this text?A.To share the writer’s feelings of a book.B.To recommend a delightful bestseller.C.To tell readers a heartbreaking story.D.To analyze the structure of a book.3. The sperm whale is an astonishing creature. It’s lo nger than a semi-truck, weighs more than 90, 000 pounds and is the largest member of the toothed whale family. It’s known to dive 6, 500 feet in search of food, and to stay down there for longer than an hour at a time.Perhaps most fantastically, the sper m whale’s brain weighs as much as 20 pounds-the biggest of any species on Earth. But when it comes to brains, is size all that matters? There’s a lot we don’t know about the sperm whale’s intelligence because it’s difficult to carry out neurological (神经的) testing on such a huge marine mammal. But some clues point to sperm whales being much smarter than we give them credit for.A 2021 study published in Biology Letters, for example, looked back to 19th-century historical logbooks from whalers. Researchers found that sperm whales were at first easy to catch-but almost immediately, the whales learned how to evade hunters and whaling success dropped by 60 percent. The study suggests that the whales passed information to one another through soundwaves to avoid being caught.Animals that have big brains usually have a few things in common. They usually live long lives; for example, sperm whales can live for 70 years or longer. Additionally, they’re capable of complex behaviors and they tend to be more socia1. Whales may work together to hunt or communicate in a language all their own. What’s more, humans, whales and dolphins all have spindle neurons in their brains. These nerve cells make us capable of deeper thought, such as reasoning skills, memory, communication and adaptive thinking. And like humans, whales have emotional intelligence- meaning they're capable of empathy, grief and sadness. Still, in proportion to (与…成比例)our body size, the human brain is bigger than that of the sperm whale.Yet there’s still so much we don’t know about how smart sperm whales really are. And just like the whalers of a century ago, we have likely been underestimating marine mammals, whether large or small, for as long as we’ve known of their existence.1. Why do people know littl e about the sperm whale’s intelligence?A.Sperm whales’ big size makes research difficult.B.It didn’t attract scientists’ attention until recently.C.Whalers didn’t keep enough records of their hunting.D.Sperm whales usually stay deep down in the ocean.2. What does the underlined word “evade” mean in paragraph 3?A.Track. B.Avoid. C.Locate. D.Trick.3. What conclusion can we draw from paragraph 5?A.The nerve cells distinguish humans from animals.B.Sperm whales have smaller brains than humans.C.Spindle neurons make higher intelligence possible.D.Emotional intelligence is unique to whales and humans.4. Which is the most suitable title for the text?A.Sperm Whales Are Astonishingly SmartB.Sperm Whales Have the Biggest BrainC.Break the Code of Whale LanguageD.Unlock the Mystery of Sea Mammals4. As the concept of emotional intelligence (EI) has gone global, we’ve watched professionals fail as they try to improve their emotional intelligence because they either don’t know where to foc us their efforts or they haven’t understood how to improve these skills on a practical level. In our work consulting with companies and coaching leaders, we have found that if you’re looking to develop particular EI strengths, it helps to consider areas for improvement others have identified along with the goals you want to achieve-and then to actively build habits in those areas rather than simply relying on understanding them conceptually. The first step is to get a sense of how your self-perception (how you see yourself) differs from your reputation (how others see you). This is especially true for the development of EI because we can be blind to how we express and read the emotional components of our interactions. For example, most of us think that we’re good listeners, but very often that’s really not the case. Without this external reality check, it will be difficult for you to identify the ways that your actions affect your performance. Getting feedback from others can also provide proof of the necessity of shifting our behavior and motivation to do so.To give you the best sense of where the differences lie between your self-perception and reputation, you should use a 360-degree feedback assessment that takes into account the multiple aspects of EI. The key is to find one to give you feedback, which is focused on development and not on performance assessment. And that can give you a detailed understanding of how other people’s assessments of you differ from your own assessments.Secondly, when you get your feedback from an assessment, let that inform what you want to improve. But also consider what your goals are. When it comes to cultivating strengths in emotional intelligence, you’re at a huge disadvantage if you’re only interested because others sa y you should be. Your emotional intelligence is so tied up in your sense of self that being intrinsically (内在的) motivated to make the effort matters more when changing longstanding habits than it does when simply learning a skill. That means the areas that you choose to actively work on should lie at the intersection of the feedback you’ve gotten and the areas that are most important to your own aspirations. Understanding the influences of your current EI habits relative to your goals will keep you going over a long period of time as you do the work of strengthening your emotional intelligence.1. What do we know from the first paragraph?A.Professionals fail to understand the concepts of EI.B.EI plays a key role in professional development.C.Leaders are badly in need of improving their EI.D.You know how to improve EI better with others’ help.2. According to the passage, which of the following is an “external reality check”?A.You got help from your parents when making a key decision.B.Your teacher directed you towards a better attitude in study.C.You reflected yourself and made a New Year Resolution.D.Your career development speeds up with the guidance of others.3. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?A.It’s most reliable to follow your inner call when you want to improve your EI.B.It’s hard for others to know your EI because it hides deeply behind your inner sense.C.When you want to improve EI, you should take your goals into consideration.D.Acquiring a new skill is more significant than your attempt to improve your EI.4. Which of the following might the author agree with?A.Effective EI development is determined by different factors.B.EI development is unlikely to happen unless you know what EI really is.C.The importance of performance assessment is underestimated.D.Your inner self discourages you from improving your EI.5. With gas prices rising and airport security lines snaking longer than ever, why not book your next domestic vacation on a train? Compared to other alternatives, it’s comfortable and relaxing. Here is some advice on how to make a trip by rail as pleasant as possible.Plan ahead. Most long-distance trains, especially the sleeping car accommodations, sell out very quickly. 1 But no matter when you travel, it’s a good idea to make your reservations at least 90 days in advance.Use a travel agent. Consider turning your travel plan over to a travel agent and letting him double-check all the details, make suggestions, and then handle the actual reservations. A good one can sometimes find you discounted tickets. 2 Then you won’t have to walk through several cars on a moving train three times a day for your meals.Bring a blanket. When you’re riding on trains, you won’t be provided with a blanket for free, even if your trip is an overnight one. 3 In the summer in particular, the air conditioning can make them quite cold.Arrive early. Most trains operate just once a day and some run only three times a week, so missing yours can be a disaster. 4 Note: The times listed on the schedules are departure times, not arrival times.Have fun. 5 Read a book, knit, do a crossword puzzle, or simply watch the world unfold outside the window. To calculate your speed as you do, divide 3,600(the number of seconds in an hour)by the number of seconds it takes you to travel one mile(the distance between two mileposts). If it takes the train 53 seconds to travel one mile, you’re going 67.92 mph.6. As the train picked up its speed, the passengers slowly settled down on their seats.
