2020公共英语三级考试阅读练习:足球盛宴Americans are getting ready for the biggest soccer event in the world. For the first time the world cup soccer competition will be held in the United States. While millions play the game around the world, soccer or football has only recently become popular here. It is only in the last 30 years that large numbers of young Americans became interested in soccer. Now it is the fastest growing sport in the country. A recent study found that almost 18 million young boys and girls play soccer in the United States. The study also found that soccer is beginning to replace more traditional games like American football as the most popular sport among students. And so, when the world cup begins next week, more than one million Americans are expected to go and see the teams play. Organizers say this year's world cup will be the biggest ever. All the seats at most of the 52 games have already been sold.Soccer has been played in the United States for a little more than one hundred years. But how did the sport come to this country? And how long has it existed in other parts of the world? No one knows exactly where the idea for soccer came from, or when people began playing the game. Some scientists say there is evidence that ball games using the feet were played thousands of years ago. There is evidence that ancient Greeks and Romans and native American Indians all played games sim- ilar to soccer. Most experts agree that Britain is the birthplace of modem soccer. They also agree that the British spread the game around the world. Unlike the game today, which uses balls of man-made material or leather, early soccer balls were often made of animal stomachs. The rules of early soccer games also differed from those we have today.1. S..[B] In the 12th century soccer games in Britain often involved whole towns.[C] Professional soccer grew quickly in Europe.[D] Experts believed that the United States would win.参考译文美国准备着迎接世界上最大的足球盛宴,他们有史以来第一次承办了世界杯。

They settled in at a comfortable East Side cafe and within minutes, another customer was approaching their table."Hey, arent you from Mississippi?" the elegant, white-haired writer remembered being asked by the stranger. "Im from Mississippi too."Without a second thought, the woman joined the Welty party. When her dinner partner showed up, she also pulled up a chair."They began telling me all the news of Mississippi," Welty said. "I didnt know what my New York friends were thinking."Taxis on a rainy New York night are rarer than sunshine. By the time the group got up to leave, it was pouring outside. Weltys new friends immediately sent a waiter to find a cab. Heading back downtown toward her hotel, her big-city friends were amazed at theturn of events that had changed their Big Apple dinner into a Mississippi."My friends said: Now we believe your stories," Welty added. "And I said: Now you know. These are the people that make me write them." Sitting on a sofa in her room, Welty, a slim figure in a simple gray dress, looked pleased with this explanation."I dont make them up," she said of the characters in her fiction these last 50 or so years. "I dont have to."Beauticians, bartenders, piano players and people with purple hats, Weltys people come from afternoons spent visiting with old friends, from walks through the streets of her native Jackson, Miss., from conversations overheard on a bus. It annoys Welty that, at 78, her left ear has now given out. Sometimes, sitting on a bus or a train, she hears only a fragment(片段) of a particularly interesting story.5. Its called Apple Day but in practice its more like Apple Month. The day itself is on October 21, but since it has caught on, events now spread out over most of October around Britain.Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see, and often taste, a wide variety of apples. To people who are used to the limited choice of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets, it can be quite an eye opener to see the range of classical apples still in existence, such as Decio which was grown by the Romans. Although it doesnt taste of anything special, its still worth a try, as is the knobbly(多疙瘩的) Cats Head which is more of a curiosity than anything else. There are also varieties developed to suit specific local conditions. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but youll need a warm, sheltered place withperfect soil to grow it, so its a pipe dream for most apple lovers who fall for it.At the events, you can meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family affairs, children are well catered for with apple-themed fun and games.Apple Days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards(果园).If you want to have a real orchard experience, try visiting the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent.8.What can people do at the apple events?A. Attend experts lectures.B. Visit fruit-loving families.C. Plant fruit trees in an orchard.D. Taste many kinds of apples.9.What can we learn about Decio?A. It is a new variety.B. It has a strange look.C. It is rarely seen now.D. It has a special taste.10. What does the underlined phrase "a pipe dream" in Paragraph 3mean?A. A practical idea.B. A vain hope.C.A brilliant plan.D. A selfish desire.11.What is the authors purpose in writing the text?A. To show how to grow apples.B .To introduce an apple festival.C. To help people select apples.D. To promote apple research.DBad news sells. If it bleeds, it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are the classic rules for the evening broadcasts and the morning papers. But now that information is being spread and monitored(监控) in different ways, researchers are discovering new rules. By tracking peoples e-mails and online posts, scientists have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories."The if it bleeds rule works for mass media," says Jonah Berger, a scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. "They want your eyeballs and dont care how youre feeling. But when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they react. You dont want them to think of you as a Debbie Downer."Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication—e-mails, Web posts and reviews, face-to-face conversations—found that it tended to be more positive than negative(消极的), but that didnt necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility, Dr. Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories: thousandsof articles on The New York Times website. He and a Penn colleague analyzed the "most e-mailed" list for six months. One of his first findings was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others.Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny, or that inspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused(激发) one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad. The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared, as Dr. Berger explains in his new book, "Contagious: Why Things Catch On."12 .What do the classic rules mentioned in the text apply to?A. News reports.B. Research papers.C .Private e-mails. D. Daily conversations.13. What can we infer about people like Debbie Downer?A. Theyre socially inactive.B. Theyre good at telling stories.C. Theyre inconsiderate of others.D. Theyre careful with their words.14.Which tended to be the most e-mailed according to Dr. Bergersresearch?A . Sports new. B. Science articles.C. Personal accounts.D. Financial reviews.15 .What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Sad Stories Travel Far and WideB .Online News Attracts More PeopleC. Reading Habits Change with the TimesD. Good News Beats Bad on Social Networks第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

But they weren’t there to throw red paint on fur-coat-wearing film stars. Instead, one activist, dressed in a full-body monkey suit, had arrived with a sign praising the filmmakers: “Thanks for not using real apes(猿)!”The creative team behind “Apes” used motion-capture(动作捕捉)technology to create digitalized animals, spending tens of millions of dollars on technology that records an actor’sperformance and later processes it with computer graphics to create a final image(图像). In this case, one of a realistic-looking ape.Yet “Apes” is more exception than the rule. In fact, Hollywood has been hot on live animals lately. One nonprofit organization, which monitors the treatment of animals in filmed entertainment, is keeping tabs on more than 2,000 productions this year. Already, a number of films, including “Water for Elephants,” “The Hangover Part II” and “Zookeeper,” have drawn the anger of activists who say the creatures acting in them haven’t been treated properly. In some cases, it’s not so much the treatment of the animals on set in the studio that has activists worried; it’s the off-set training and living conditions that are raising concerns. And there are questions about the films made outside the States, which sometimes are not monitored as closely as productions filmed in the States.24. To express thanks to some filmmakers.25. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?A. The cost of making “Apes.”B. The creation of digitalized apes.C. The publicity about “Apes.”D. They would lose popularity.CWith the young unable to afford to leave home and the old at risk of isolation(孤独), more families are choosing to live together. The doorway to peace and quiet, for Nick Bright at least, leads straight to his mother-in-law: she lives on the ground floor, while he lives upstairs with his wife and their two daughters.Four years ago they all moved into a three-storey Victorian house in Bristol — one of a growing number of multigenerational families in the UK living together under the same roof. They share a front door and a washing machine, but Rita Whitehead has her own kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living room on the ground floor.“We floated the idea to my mum of sharing a house,” says Kathryn Whitehead. Rita cuts in: “We spoke more with Nick because I think it’s a big thing for Nick to live with his mother-in-law.”And what does Nick think? “From my standpoint, it all seems to work very well. Would I recommend it? Yes, I think I would.”It’s hard to tell exactly how many people agree with him, but research indicates that the numbers have been rising for some time. Official reports suggest that the number of households with three generations living together had risen from 325,000 in 2001 to 419,000 in 2013.Other varieties of multigenerational family are more common. Some people live with their elderly parents; many more adult children are returning to the family home, if they ever left. It is said that about 20% of 25-34-year-olds live with their parents, compared with 16% in 1991. The total number of all multigenerational households in Britain is thought to be about 1.8 million.Stories like that are more common in parts of the world where multigenerational living is more firmly rooted. In India, particularly outside cities, young women are expected to move in with their husband’s family when they get married.28. Who mainly uses the ground floor in the Victorian house in Bristol?A. Nick.B. Rita.C. Kathryn.D. The daughters.29. What is Nick’s attitude towards sharing the house with his mother-in-law?A. Positive.B. Carefree.C. Tolerant.D. Unwilling.30. What is the author’s statement about multigenerational family based on?A. Family traditions.B. Financial reports.C. Published statistics.D. Public opinions.31. What is the text mainly about?A. Lifestyles in different countries.B. Conflicts between generations.C. A housing problem in Britain.D. A rising trend of living in the UK.DWe are the products of evolution, and not just evolution that occurred billions of years ago. As scientists look deeper into our genes(基因), they are finding examples of human evolution in just the past few thousand years. People in Ethiopian highlands have adapted to living at high altitudes. Cattle-raising people in East Africa and northern Europe have gained a mutation(突变)that helps them digest milk as adults. On Thursday in an article published in Cell, a team of researchers reported a new kind of adaptation — not to air or to food, but to the ocean. A group of sea-dwelling people in Southeast Asia have evolved into better divers. The Bajau, as these people are known, number in the hundreds of thousands in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. They have traditionally lived on houseboats; in recent times, they’ve also built houses on stilts(支柱)in coastal waters. “They are simply a stranger to the land,” said Rodney C. Jubilado, a University of Hawaii researcher who studies the Bajau.Dr. Jubilado first met the Bajau while growing up on Samal Island in the Philippines. They made a living as divers, spearfishing or harvesting shellfish. “We were so amazed that they could stay underwater much longer than us local islanders,” Dr. Jubilado said, “I could see them actually walking under the sea.”In 2015, Melissa Ilardo, then a graduate student in genetics at the University of Copenhagen, heard about the Bajau. She wondered if centuries of diving could have led to the evolution of physical characteristics that made the task easier for them. “It seemed like the perfect chance for natural selection to act on a population,” said Dr. Ilardo. She also said there were likely a number of other genes that help the Bajau dive.32. What does the author want to tell us by the examples in paragraph 1?A. Environmental adaptation of cattle raisers.B. New knowledge of human evolution.C. Recent findings of human origin.D. Significance of food selection.33. Where do the Bajau build their houses?A. In valleys.B. Near rivers.C. On the beach.D. Off the coast.34. Why was the young Jubilado astonished at the Bajau?A. They could walk on stilts all day.B. They had a superb way of fishing.C. They could stay long underwater.D. They lived on both land and water.35. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Bodies Remodeled for a Life at SeaB. Highlanders’ Survival SkillsC. Basic Methods of Genetic ResearchD. The World’s Best Divers第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

2020年公共英语三级(pets3)阅读理解强化练习题(最新)

Listening is an extremely complex communicative activity. In order to have a better understanding, to anticipate what is coming is very important. An effective listener should continuously develop more or less specific readiness for what will come next. If a listener hears what he has expected, it will be much easier for him to receive the information. But if what he hears is totally out of his expectation,he will fail to get the message. The skill to anticipate what is coming in listening comprehension depends largely on the listener's familiarity with the theme(主题) of the message. It also depends on the listener's knowledge of the speaker as well as the situation. Obviously, when we listen to something that we already have some information about, it is generally much easier for us to take in the new information .Therefore,pre-listening preparation seems to play an important role in increasing our comprehension .Before actual listening ,we could perhaps first give some thought to the topic ,discuss it with others ,and then read some related material and do some vocabulary work. If we could make ourselves fully prepared for the coming talks or lectures,we are more likely to become effective listeners. Of course, readiness beforehand is not at all enough .Active thinking must take place all the way through .In fact ,we should always try to think ahead of the speaker.1.The passage is most possible taken from ____ .A.a novelB.a textbookC.a news reportD.a fashion magazine2.What is the first paragraph mainly about?A.How to think actively in listening comprehension.B.How to develop specific readiness before listening.C.The skills in anticipating in listening comprehension.D.The importance of anticipating in listening comprehension.3.The skill to anticipate in listening comprehension depends largely on ____ .A.the listener's emotionB.the difficulty of the messageC.the listener's communicative skillsD.The listener's familiarity with the topic4.In order to anticipate ,the first thing to do before actual listening may be ____ .A.do some vocabulary workB.think about the topicC.read some related materialD.discuss the topic with others5.What is the author's attitude towards anticipating in listening comprehension?A.Neutral.B.Positive.C.Negative.D.Critical.答案:1-5 B D D B B。

2020年9月公共英语三级模拟题:阅读2020年9月公共英语三级模拟题:阅读Do you find it very difficult and painful to get up in the morning? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has adaily energy cycle.During the hours when your labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as:“Get up, Peter! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to thetrouble is that Peter is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit if better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning, but you have an important to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.51. If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably ________.[A] he is a lazy person.[ B ] he refuses to follow his own energy cycle.[C] he is not sure when his energy is low.[D] he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening.52. Which of the following may lead to family quarrels according to the passage?[AJ Unawareness of energy cycles.[B] Familiar monologues.[C]A change in a family member’s energy cycle.[D] Attempts to control the energy cycle of other family members.53. If one wants to work efficiently at his low point in the morning, he should __________.[A]change his energy cycle[B] overcome his laziness[C]get up earlier than usual[D] go to bed earlier54. You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will __________.[A] help to keep your energy for the day’s work.[B] help you to control your temper early in the day[C] enable you to concentrate on your routine work[D] keep your energy your energy cycle under control all day55. Which of the following statements is NOT true?[A] Getting off to work with a minimum effort helps save one’s energy.[B] Dr. Kletman explains why people reach their peaks at different hours of day.[C] Habit helps a person adapt to his own energy cycle.[D] Children have energy cycles, too.参考答案:51. 以下是“2020年公共英语三级(pets3)阅读理解强化练习题”,⼀起来看看吧! Of course, readiness beforehand is not at all enough .Active thinking must take place all the way through .In fact ,we should always try to think ahead of the speaker. 1.The passage is most possible taken from ____ . A.a novel B.a textbook C.a news report D.a fashion magazine 2.What is the first paragraph mainly about? A.How to think actively in listening comprehension. B.How to develop specific readiness before listening. C.The skills in anticipating in listening comprehension. D.The importance of anticipating in listening comprehension. 3.The skill to anticipate in listening comprehension depends largely on ____ . A.the listener's emotion B.the difficulty of the message C.the listener's communicative skills D.The listener's familiarity with the topic 4.In order to anticipate ,the first thing to do before actual listening may be ____ . A.do some vocabulary work B.think about the topic C.read some related material D.discuss the topic with others 5.What is the author's attitude towards anticipating in listening comprehension? A.Neutral. B.Positive. C.Negative. D.Critical. 答案:1-5 B D D B B。

I heard many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are clutching (紧握) at one another's hands for reassurance.
They claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up huddled (聚在一起) round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon (蚕茧) into a
larger_cocoon.
It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today's parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.
But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don't care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come—with the people who respect you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really counts.
1.In this passage, the author wants to tell ________.
A.teenagers to try to pursue their real selves
B.readers to try to be popular with people around
C.parents to try to control and guide their children
D.people to try to understand and respect each other
2.The author disapproves of rebelling teenagers ________.
A.growing away from their parents
B.following the popularity trend
C.walking a new way on their own
D.turning to their friends for help
3.The phrase “larger cocoon” at the end of the second paragraph refers to ________.
A.the distractive and variable society
B.the dazzling music world
C.the parental care and love
D.the popularity wave in the society
4.What does the author think of advertisements?
A.Convincing.
B.Instructive.
C.Influential.
D.Authoritative.
5.According to the author, what might happen when a teenager stands up against the popularity wave and follows his/her own path?
A.He/She falls behind the time.
B.He/She loses good friends.
C.He/She faces all kinds of criticism.
D.He/She gains valuable popularity.
答案及解析
1.A 主旨大意题。

文章首先分析了青少年从众这一不良现象,然后告诉我们,要想有所作为,青少年应该有自己的特色,并分析了其意义和困难,由此可见,关键词就是teenagers。

故选A。

2.B 推理判断题。

由文章可知,作者并不赞成青少年从众。

3.D 词义猜测题。

这是对上文的“…wear the same clothes,…they all end up huddled (聚在一起) round listening to the same record”的比喻,指的就是社会上的流行波。

4.C 推理判断题。

倒数第二段作者说“All this adds up to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.”All this 就包括前文说的广告(advertisements),也就是说作者认为,广告对青少年的流行波是有影响的,故选C。

5.D 推理判断题。

文章告诉青少年应该如何走自己的路,最后一句又告诉他们这样做的意义:That is the only kind of popularity that really counts.由此可以看出D项正确。

选项中的关键词为:popularity。

valuable对应count。
