But actually the umbrella was not invented as protection against rain. Its first use was as a shade (遮光物)against the sun!Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, way back in the 11 century BC.We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its use: it became a symbol of honour and authority. In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by royalty or by those in highoffice. In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. And the umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece. But it is believed that the first persons in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans.During the Middle Ages, the use of the umbrella practically disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late 16th century. And again it was considered a symbol of power and authority. By 1680, the umbrella appeared in France, and later on in England.By the 18th century, the umbrella was used against rainthroughout most of Europe. Umbrella have not changed much in style during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. T o many people, the cause is clear: we eat too much. But scientific experiments do little to support this idea. Going back to the America of 1910, we find that people were thinner than today, yet they ate more food. In those days people worked harder physically, walked more, used machines much less, and didn't watch television.Several modern studies, besides, have shown that fatter people do not eat more on average than thinner people. In fact, some research work, such as the 1979 study of 3,545 London office workers, reports that fat people eat less than thinner people on average. Studies show that thin people are more active than fat people. A study by the research group at Standford University School of Medicine found the following fact: the more the man ran, the greater body fat he lost. The more he ran, the greater was his need for food. Thus, those who ran the most ate the most, yet lost the greatest amount of body fat.11. What kind of physical problem do many grown-up Americans have?A. They are too thin.B. They work too hard.C. They are too fat.D. They lose too much body fat.12. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out o f every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect American society in many ways — education, medici ne, and business. Quietly the graying of America. has made us a very different society — one in which people have a quite diff erent idea of what kind of behavior is suitable at various ages.A person’s age no longer tells you anything about his/her social position, marriage or health. There’s no longer a particular yea r in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn’t as strong as it used to be. It doesn't surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. Public notions are changing. Many people say, "I am much younger than my mother — or my father — was at my age." No one says "act your age" anymore. We've stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.(17.5分)16). It can be learnt from the text that the aging of the population in America ____.(3.5分)(A) has made people feel younger(B) has changed people’s social position(C) has changed people’s understanding of age(D) has slowed down the country’s social development参考答案:C17). The underlined word “one” refers to ______.(3.5分)(A) a society(B) America(C) a place(D) population参考答案:A18). We can infer from the text that if a 25-year-old man becomes general manager of a big firm, the writer would most proba bly consider it _________.(3.5分)(A) normal(B) wonderful(C) unbelievable(D) unreasonable参考答案:A19). “Act your age” means people should ________.(3.5分)(A) be active when they are old(B) do the right thing at the right age(C) show respect for their parents young or old(D) take more physical exercise suitable to their age参考答案:B20). This passage is mainly about ____________________.(3.5分)(A) why American society is different(B) suitable behaviors at different age in American’s eyes(C) how older people act in youthful ways in America(D) how American people’s ideas about age have changed参考答案:DJust as the degree of individual freedom in America seems loose and therefore uncomfortable to many visitors, in many countri es, people will tell you what they think you want to hear, whether or not it is true. To them, this is the polite thing to do. To A mericans it is considered confusing — even dishonest — to avoid telling the truth, even if the only purpose is to be polite. It is helpful to remember that different cultures consider some matters more important than others. For Americans, however, trust and truth are most important. One of the worst things that can be said about someone in America is that “you cannot trust hi m.”Considering such differences in values among many cultures of the world, it is natural that misunderstandings occur. “How far i s it to the next town?” an American asks a man standing by the road. In some countries , because the man realizes the travele r is tired and eager to reach the next village, he will politely say, “Just down the road”. He thinks this is more encouraging, gen tler, and therefore the answer the traveler wants to hear. So the American drives alone for many more hours before he comes t o the village. The traveler is angry, with a feeling of being fooled. He thinks that the man has lied to him on purpose because h e must have known quite well what the distance was.If a visitor to the United States asked an American standing by the road how far the next town was, the American would think it dishonest if he said it was near when he knew it was really 24 miles away. Although he, too, would be sympathetic with the t ired traveler, he would say, “You have a long way to go yet; it is at least 24 miles more.” The traveler might be disappointed , b ut he would know what to expect, and there would be no misunderstanding.(17.5分)21). People in other cultures choose not to tell the truth to the visitors because _______________.(3.5分)(A) they try to confuse the visitors(B) they consider it comfortable(C) they try to be polite(D) they consider it helpful参考答案:C22). Americans insist on telling the truth because __________________.(3.5分)(A) they don’t mind confusing people(B) they are not considerate(C) they are not polite(D) they value trust and truth参考答案:D23). In paragraph 2, the misunderstanding occurs because ____________________.(3.5分)(A) the man standing by the road doesn’t know where the American is going(B) the man standing by the road is dishonest and lied to the American(C) the man standing by the road wants to encourage the American(D) the man standing by the road knows the shortest way to the village参考答案:C24). We can infer from paragraph 3 that ____________________.(3.5分)(A) the American has no idea about how tired the traveler is(B) the American considers honesty important(C) the American wants to disappoint the traveler(D) the American knows what the traveler wants to hear参考答案:B25). What is the writer’s attitude toward the different cultures? (3.5分)(A) The writer thinks it natural for people in different cultures to misunderstand each other.(B) The writer thinks American culture better than many cultures of the world.(C) The writer thinks American culture worse than many cultures of the world.(D) The writer thinks people will always get confused with the cultural differences.参考答案:AA new study suggests that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop depression(忧郁症)as yo ung adults. But the extent to which TV may or may not be to blame is a question that the study leaves unanswered. The researchers used a national long-term survey of adolescent health to investigate the relationship between media use and depression. They based their findings on more than four thousand adolescents who were not depressed when the survey bega n in 1995.As part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they watched daily. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio. Media use totaled an average of 5.5 hours a day. More than 2 hours of that was spent watching TV.Seven years later, in 2002, more than 7 percent of the young people had signs of depression. The average age at that time wa s 21. Brian Primack at the University of Pittsburgh medical school was the lead author of the new study. He says every extra h our of television meant an 8 percent increase in the chances of developing signs of depression. The researchers say they did n ot find any such relationship with the use of other media such as movies, video games or radio. But the study did find that you ng men were more likely than young women to develop depression, given the same amount of media use.Doctor Primack says the study did not explore if watching TV causes depression. But one possibility, he says, is that it may tak e time away from activities that could help prevent depression, like sports and socializing. It might also interfere with sleep, he says, and that could have an influence.(17.5分)26). According to the passage, the researchers have found ________________________.(3.5分)(A) in what way watching TV causes depression(B) why teenagers like to watch TV(C) the relationship between depression and the use of all forms of media(D) the relationship between depression and watching TV参考答案:D27). As used in paragraph 2, the word “adolescent” means ________________.(3.5分)(A) teenager(B) media use(C) young adult(D) average age参考答案:A28). About the methodology of the research, the writer has mentioned all of the following except that _______________.(3.5分)(A) the research was made nationwide(B) the research was made between 1995 and 2002(C) the adolescents in the survey were all depressed(D) the adolescents were asked how they used various types of media参考答案:C29). Which of the following is true about the findings of the research?(3.5分)(A) all the young people in the survey had signs of depression(B) watching TV longer implies higher risk of developing depression(C) not only TV, movies too, can result in depression(D) men and women had equal chances of developing depression参考答案:B30). The tone of this passage can be described as __________________.(3.5分)(A) critical(B) argumentative(C) emotional(D) factual参考答案:DWhen having a meal, a European usually holds the knife in the right hand, and the fork in the left. He uses the knife and fork with his both hands. He keeps his knife and fork in his hands until he finishes eating. But an American, on the opposite, may use just one hand whenever possible and keep the other hand on his lap. He uses the f ork in his right hand to pickup fried potatoes. When he has to cut his meat, he changes his fork to the left hand and cuts it. Th en he puts down the knife and changes his fork to his right hand to pick up the sliced meat. Then, perhaps, he will suddenly th ink of his coffee or orange. So he has to put down his fork in order to drink his coffee or orange. Now you can see, an America n is busy all the time at the dinner table. By the way, Europeans usually have their coffee after meals, but many Americans pre fer to have coffee during the meal.If you are present at a formal dinner, you might be confused to find so many forks, knives and spoons put before you. You mig ht be at a loss to know what to do with them. Don’t worry. The rule is simple. You just use them in the order in which they lie, beginning from outside towards the plate. The small fork on the outside on the left is for salad. The spoon on the outside on th e right is for soup. There is another little knife, called a butter spreader, on a bread-and-butter plate on the left. As the bread i s passed, each guest helps himself and puts his pieces on the small plate. Next to the soup there will probably be the blunt kni fe for fish, which is smaller and blunter than other knives.(17.5分)31). The normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Usually only students who show promise and talent are accepted, and the course lasts two years. Then the young actor or actress takes up work with a theatrical company, usually as assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre and occasionally acting in very small parts. It is very hard work indeed, the hours are long and the salary is tiny.Of course, some people have remarkable chances which lead to fame and success without this long and hard training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a bicycle factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his car. He stopped and got out to speak to the girl. He asked if she would like to go to the film studio to do a test, and she thought he was joking. Then she got angry and said she would call the police. It took the producer twenty minutes to convince Connie that he was serious. The test was successful. And within a few weeks she was playing the leading part opposite one of the most famous actors of the day. But chances like this happen once in a blue moon!1. From the very beginning, the author puts it clearly that acting is a profession B .A. sought after by too manyB. too difficult for young peopleC. for slim people onlyD. one can go into without special training2. For someone who feels he must act, it is very likely that B .A. he will become a film star at long lastB. he will become a stage managerC. he will be well paidD. he will end up without any success3. The film producer found Connie when she was D .A. at work in a bicycle factoryB. driving past him in her carC. going to a film studioD. waiting for a bus4. A few weeks after the test, Connie Pratt found herself B .A. the most famous actress of the worldB. playing the leading female role in a playC. as famous as the greatest actor of the worldD. no less famous than the leading actor of the day5. They show that he was learning Latin, was very interested in the basics of good behavior in society, and was reading English literature. At school he seems only to have been interested in mathematics. In fact, his formal education was surprisingly brief for a gentleman, and incomplete. For unlike other young Virginian of that day, he did not go to the College of William and Mary in the Virginian capital of Williamsburg. In terms of formal training then, Washington contrasts sharply with some other early American Presidents such as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. In later years, Washington probably regretted his lack of intellectual training. He never felt comfortable in a debate in Congress, or on any subject that had not to do with everyday, practical matters. And because he never learned French and could not speak directly to the French leaders, he did not visit the country he admired so much. Thus, unlike Jefferson andAdams, he never reached Europe.11. Why didn’t Washington go to college? BA. His family could not afford it.B. A college education was rather uncommon in his timeC. He didn’t like the young Virginian gentlemen.D. The coffee spoon ought to be on the saucer, the soup spoon ought to be on the plate under the bowl. When you are having soup, make the least noises and use the side of your spoon inside out this way, not the tip. And you mustn’t pick up your soup bowls so as to drink away the last drops of your soup from the bottom of the bowl.Very often there is only one main course and salad, followed by your sweet. If you find the meal not enough, say “Oh, it’s delicious!” and ask for some more of the chicken or steak or whatever you have just had. The hostess will be very glad that you appreciate her cooking and will give you an extra portion. But if you observe the Chinese way of being polite and say “No, thank you” when the hostess offers you more, you will most probably starve later, because Americans will never press food on you. Yet it is not polite to keep silent and not to talk with the person next to you. It would be considered good manners if you handle your silverware with care so that they don’t make any noise. When coffee comes, drink it from your cup. The coffee spoon should rest on the saucer while you are drinking. And smoking, of course, is rarely seen at a dinner table. Well, when the meal is finished, the guests put their napkins on the table and stand up, the men again helping the ladies with their chairs. After the dinner, the guests usually stay for an hour or two, then they would say, “well, I’m afraid I must be going now.” The host and hostess would of course urge everyone to stay longer. “What, already? Won’t you have another coffee?” The guests, for instance, would say, “I love to, but I have to be up early tomorrow. Thank you for a most enjoyable evening. Good-night.”And if you stay overnight or over the weekend, it will be courteous to send a thank-you note to the host or hostess the following day, very often with a small gift such as a box of chocolate or some flowers as a token(象征) of appreciation of their hospitality (好客).16. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage? CA. How to Prepare for a MealB. Never Press Food on Your GuestC. Table Manners in the U. S.A.D. How to Enjoy a Dinner17. They had planned either to live in a furnished apartment or to buy used furniture. But they soon learned about a new system that more and more people are using. The renting of home furn ishings (bed, tables, dishes, and so on) has become one of America’s fastest growing businesses. What kinds of people rent their home furnishings instead of buying them? People who are international business or government officials, foreign students, airline workers, young married couples — people whose job or business may force them to move frequently from one city to another. They save a lot of trouble and the cost of moving their furniture each time. They simply rent new furniture when they reach their new homes. Young people with little money do not want to buy cheap furniture that they may soon dislike. They prefer to wait until they have enough money to buy furniture they really like. Meanwhile, they find they can rent better quality furniture than they could afford to buy.One family, who now have a large, beautiful home of their own, liked their rented furniture somuch that they decided to keep renting it instead of buying new things. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: what kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes? It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must negatively affect people. A person’s conception of himself or herself is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing “the right thing.” Shy people are very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms their feelings of inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliment with a statement like this one, “You’re just saying that to make me feel good. I know it’s not true.” It is clear that while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient efforts in building self-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in handwith a lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths. Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual, interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full potential. Let’s not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.36. What does the author try to prove by citing “what kind of impression am I making?” (Para. 1)A. Shy people benefit from their caring about their appearance.B. People’s shyness made them care too much about their appearan ce and actions.C. It’s natural that shy people don’t believe other’s compliments.D. Shy people think they are different from others.37. According to the writer, self-awareness is_________.A. a good qualityB. the cause of unhappinessC. harmful to peopleD. a weak point of shy people38. It can be inferred from the passage that shy people_________.A. should find more of their weaknessB. should understand themselves in the right wayC. had better ignore their weaknessD. can get rid of their shyness while maintaining low self-esteemPassage 9As supplier of most of the food we eat and of raw material for many industrial processes, agriculture is clearly an important area of the economy. But the industrial performance of agriculture is even more important than this. For in nations where the productivity of farmers is low, most of the working population is needed to raise food and few people are available for production of investment goods or for other activities required for economic growth. Indeed, one of the factors related most closely to the per capita income (人均收入) of a nation is the percentage of its population engaged in farming. In the poorest nations of the world, more than half of the population lives on farms. This compares sharply with less than 10% in western Europe and less than 4% in the United States. In short, the course of economic development in general depends in a fundamental way on the performance of farmers. This performance, in turn, depends on how agriculture is organized and on the economic environment, or market structure, within which it functions. In the following pages the performance of American agriculture is examined. It is appropriate to begin with a consideration of its market structure.41. This passage is most probably ________.A. a news itemB. part of an introduction of a bookC. part of a lectureD. an advertisement42. From the passage, we can infer that ________ is most important to agriculture.A. the amount of food it producesB. the per capita income of farmersC. the industrial performanceD. the production of investment goods43. The word “this” in Line 3 refers to ________.A. the provision of food and raw materialsB. the productivity of farmersC. the production of investment goodsD. the economy as a whole44. The performance of farmers essentially determines ________.A. the size of the working populationB. the organization of agricultureC. the market structureD. the general development of economy45. This passage will most probably be followed by a discussion of ________.A. the structure of American farming populationB. the market structure of American agricultureC. the various functions of American agricultureD. the organization of American agriculturePassage 10The advantages and disadvantages of large population have long been a subject of discussion among economists. It has been argued that the supply of good land is limited. To feed a large population, inferior land must be cultivated and the good land worked intensively. Thus, each person produces less and this means a lower average income than could be obtained with a smaller population. Other economists have argued that a large population gives more scope for specialization and the development of facilities such as ports, roads and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to justify them. One of the difficulties in carrying out a world-wide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability(获得的可能性)of food and raw materials. In the developing countries where a vastly expanded population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources, it will be the first concern of government to place a limit on the birthrate, whatever the consequences may be. In a highly industrialized society the problem may be more complex. A decreasing birthrate may lead to unemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured goods. When the pressure of population on housing declines, prices also decline and the building industry is weakened. Faced with considerations such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which is stable or in decline.46. According to the passage, slowly rising birthrate perhaps is good for ___________.A. a developed nationB. a developing nationC. every nation with a small populationD. every nation with a big population47. A small population may mean ______________.A. higher productivity and a higher average income.B. lower productivity and a lower average incomeC. higher productivity, but a lower average incomeD. lower productivity, but a higher average income48. In a developed country, people will perhaps go out of work if the birthrate ___________.A. is out of controlB. goes downC. goes upD. remains stable49. It is no easy job to carry out a general plan for birth control throughout the world because ___。

During the twentieth century there was an unusual shortening of the time of a woman’s life spent in caring for children. A woman who got married at the end of the 19th century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which custom, chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women get married at a younger age and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and is likely to take paid work untilretirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children ,her work is lightened by household appliances(家用电器)and convenience foods. This important change in women’s way of life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women’s economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity and most of them took a full-time job. However, when they got married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age, and though women tend to get married young, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Many more return afterwards to a full-time or part-time job. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with both husband and wife accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfaction of family life, and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money and running the home, according to the abilities and interest of each of them.21. We are told that in an average family about 1890________.A. many children died before they were fiveB. the youngest child would be fifteen years younger than the oldestC. seven of eight children lived to be more than fiveD. the child death rate was rather high22. Many girls, the passage says, are now likely to ________.A. get married so that they can get a jobB. leave school as soon as they canC. give up their jobs for good after they are marriedD. continue working until they are going to have a baby24. According to the passage, it is now quite usual for women to ________.A. stay at home after leaving schoolB. marry men younger than themselvesC. start working again later in lifeD. get married while still at school25. They were coming from a point in the sky where there was no know star. They were coming very regularly too: about once a second. It was as if they were controlled by a clock. The scientists who heard the signals did not tell anybody else. They were rather afraid to tell in case they frightened people. The signals were coming from a very small body----no bigger, perhaps, than the earth. Was that why no light could be seen from it Or were the signals coming from a planet that belonged to some other star There was no end to the questions, but the scientists kept the news secret. “Perhaps there are intelligent beings out there,” theythought, “who are trying to send messages to other planets, or to us!” So the news was not given to the newspapers. Instead, the scientists studied the signals and searched for others like them…Well, all that happened in 1967 and 1968. Since then scientists have learnt more about those strange, regular, radio signals. And they have told the story, of course. The signals do not come from a planet; they come from a new kind of star called a “pulsar”. About a hundred other pulsars have now been found, and most of them are very like the first one.Pulsars are strong radio stars. They are the smallest but the heaviest stars we know at present. A handful of pulsar would weigh a few thousand tons. Their light----if they give much light----is too small for us to see. But we can be sure of this: no intelligent beings are living on them.26. In the United States, it is an annual (每年的) occasion to show thanks to God for his goodness. As a historical, national and religious holiday, Thanksgiving Day began with the English in Plymouth Colony. As far back as 1621, after a long bitter winter and the gathering of the first harvest, these early settlers shared a feast with the local Indians and offered prayers of thanksgiving. President Washington proclaimed (宣布) the first nationalThanksgiving Day to be celebrated on November 26, 1789. President Lincoln revived the custom in 1863.It was not until 1941 that the US Congress adopted a resolution, setting the fourth Thursday of November as an annual Thanksgiving Day. Thus what began as a religious celebration of the harvest has since become a nationwide holiday.Today Thanksgiving Day is usually a family day, celebrated with a traditional turkey dinner and a happy reunion. Both towns have many hotels; and in the summer the hotels are full of holiday-makers and other tourists.Last August there was a fire at the Seabreeze Hotel in Beldon. The next day, the following news appeared on page two of the town’s newspaper, The Beldon Post:FIRE AT SEABREEZELate last night firemen hurried to the Seabreeze Hotel and quickly put out a small fire in a bedroom The hotel manager said that a cigarette sta rted the fire. We say again to all our visitor: “Please don’t smoke cigarettes in bed.” This was Beldon’s first hotel fire in five years. The Canfield Times gave the news in these words on page one:ANOTHER BELDON HOTEL CATCHES FIRELast night Beldon firemen arrived just too late to save clothing, and some furniture at the Seabreeze Hotel. An angry holiday-maker said, “An electric lamp probably started the fire. The bedroom lamps are very old at some of these hotels. When I turned my bedside light on, I h eard a funny noise from the lamp.” We are glad to tell our readers that this sort of adventure does not happen in Canfield. What are the facts, then? During the twentieth century there was an unusual shortening of the time of a woman’s life spent in caring for children. A woman who got married at the end of the 19th century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which custom, chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women get married at a younger age and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children ,her work is lightened by household appliances(家用电器)and convenience foods. This important change in women’s way of life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women’s ec onomic position. When she was over fifty, the late 19th century mother________.A. would expect to work until she diedB. was usually expected to take up paid employmentC. would be healthy enough to take up paid employmentD. was unlikely to find a job even if she is now likely23. The best title for this passage is ______________.A. Great Changes in Women’s LifeB. 19th-Century FamilyC. Modern Girls’ ChoiceD. Equal Duties in Family Life(3)Some radio signals were heard in 1967. They were coming from a point in the sky where there was no know star. They were coming veryregularly too: about once a second. It was as if they were controlled bya clock. The scientists who heard the signals did not tell anybody else. They were rather afraid to tell in case they frightened people. Thesignals were coming from a very small body----no bigger, perhaps, than the earth. Was that why no light could be seen from it? Or werethe signals coming from a planet that belonged to some other star? There was no end to the questions, but the scientists kept the news secret. “Perhaps there are intelligent beings out there,” they thought,“who are trying to send messages to other planets, or to us!” So thenews was not given to the newspapers. Instead, the scientists studiedthe s ignals and searched for others like them…Well, all that happened in 1967 and 1968. Since then scientists have learnt more about those strange, regular, radio signals. And theyhave told the story, of course. The signals do not come from a planet;they com e from a new kind of star called a “pulsar”. About a hundredother pulsars have now been found, and most of them are very like thefirst one.Pulsars are strong radio stars. They are the smallest but the heaviest stars we know at present. A handful of pulsar would weigh afew thousand tons. Their light----if they give much light----is too smallfor us to see. But we can be sure of this: no intelligent beings are living on them.26. The radio signals discussed in this passage .A.were regularB.w ere controlled by a clockC.were heard in 1967 onlyD.were secret messages27. The radio signals were sent by .A. a satelliteB. a planetC. a sky body which was unknown at that timeD. intelligent beings who were unknown at that time28. President Washington proclaimed (宣布) the first national Thanksgiving Day to be celebrated on November 26, 1789. President Lincoln revived the custom in 1863.It was not until 1941 that the US Congress adopted a resolution, setting the fourth Thursday of November as an annual Thanksgiving Day. The book The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin is probably one of the most famous books ever written by a scientist. Yet it is a book which the writer did not want to publish; he only agreed to make his theory known to the public when he was forced to by his friends. In 1831, the British Government sent a ship called Beagle to South America to make maps of the coast. At that time, Darwin w as a young man in his twenties who had studied science in Edinburgh and Cambridge. Through a friend, he was offered the job of studying the plants and animals of the different countries that the Beagle was to visit. Darwin’s father told him not to go, an d the captain of the Beagle said that he did not like the shape of Darwin’s nose; but that did not stop him, and in December of that year, Darwin sailed for South America. He spent five years on the ship, collecting many samples and writing down his obs ervations about the living things he found. When he returned to England, he tried to work out a theory to explain what he had observed. It was clear that many species w ere connected with each other in some way, without being exactly the same. Why was this? Two years after his return, he deve loped a theory: only the strongest or the cleverest could survive difficult conditions. Over time, the species changes slowly to fi t the environment. Different environments produce different species.(17.5分)

The greatest recent changes have been in the lives of women. During the twentiethcentury there was an unusual shortening of the time of a woman’s life spent in caring for children. A woman who got married at the end of the 19th century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which custom, chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work.Today women get married at a younger age and have fewer children. Usual ly a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with both husband and wife accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfaction of family life, and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money and running the home, according to the abilities and interest of each of them.(20分)16.1 We are told that in an average family about 1890________.(4分)16.2 The best title for this passage is ______________(4分)参考答案:A解题思路:无16.3 分16.4 Many girls, the passage says, are now likely to ________.(4分)16.5 According to the passage, it is now quite usual for women to ________.(4分)17. The fourth Thursday in November is called Thanksgiving Day. In the United States, it isan annual (每年的) occasion to show thanks to God for his goodness. Schools are closed on Thanksgiving Day and the day after. Many people, including students studying in another state, often travel long distances to spend the holiday at home.(15分)17.1 What is the meaning of the underlined word “feast” in paragraph 2?(3分)17.2 In 1941 __________________________.(3分)17.3 分17.4 Which of the following statements is true about the celebration of Thanksgiving Day?(3分)17.5 分18. Some radio signals were heard in 1967. They were coming from a point in the sky wherethere was no know star. They were coming very regularly too: about once a second. It was as if they were controlled by a clock. The scientists who heard the signals did not tell anybody else. They were rather afraid to tell in case they frightened people. The signals were coming from a very smallbody----no bigger, perhaps, than the earth. Was that why no light could be seen from it?Or were the signals coming from a planet that belonged to some other star? There was no end to the questions, but the scientists kept the news secret. “Perhapsthere are intelligent beings out there,” they thought, “who are trying to send messages to other planets, or to us!” So the news was not given to the newspapers. Instead, the scientists studied t he signals and searched for others like them…Well, all that happened in 1967 and 1968. Since then scientists have learnt more about those strange, regular, radio signals. And they have told the story, of course. The signals do not come from a planet; they come from a new kind of star called a “pulsar”. Abouta hundred other pulsars have now been found, and most of them are very like the firstone.Pulsars are strong radio stars. They are the smallest but the heaviest stars we know at present. A handful of pulsar would weigh a few thousand tons. Their light----if they give much light----is too small for us to see.
