2024年3月公共三级英语作文

2024年3月公共三级英语作文English:In March 2024, as the world continues to grapple with the challenges posed by climate change, it is crucial for individuals and governments to take decisive action to mitigate its impact. One key initiative that can be implemented is the transition to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power. By reducing reliance on fossil fuels, we can significantly decrease carbon emissions and slow down the rate of global warming. Additionally, investing in sustainable transportation methods like electric vehicles and public transportation can help reduce air pollution and improve overall air quality. Education and awareness campaigns are also essential in promoting eco-friendly practices and encouraging responsible consumption habits. Governments must enact policies that support these efforts, such as incentivizing green initiatives and regulating industries that produce high levels of emissions. Ultimately, it is imperative that we all work together to protect the planet for future generations and create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly world.中文翻译:在2024年3月,随着世界继续应对气候变化带来的挑战,个人和政府采取果断行动来减轻其影响至关重要。

Unit 1 College life1. Write an essay in about 100–120 words based on your discussion in Optional Classroom Activities. You can take either of the following titles:1) I like to study on my own2) I like to study in a group2. If you didn’t do Task 3 in Optional Classroom Activities you can write an essay of around 120 words on the following topic.College Is Not an Ivory Tower▆ Sample Essays for Task 1:I like to study on my ownMany of my classmates like to study together. However, I always like to study on my own, with good reasons. First, I feel that I can concentrate better when I study alone. When I have to work together with other people, I often get distracted and more often than not, I end up chatting with them without completing the task at hand. Second, when I study on my own, I can work at my own pace, choosing to spend more time on certain difficult sections and less time on less challenging parts. I can also check my class notes or reference books whenever I feel the need to. One final good advantage of studying alone is that unlike group work, self study is not restricted by time and space. In other words, if I feel like studying, I can do so at any time and anywhere. (146 words)I like to study in a groupAccording to a recent study, students who study together by discussing homework and problems usually score higher than those who work on their own. I am happy to hear that because I like to study in a group. I think we can reinforce our understanding of what we have learned in class by asking each other questions. Besides, it is always enjoyable working with someone else. A discussion on questions we don’t understan d very well will help clear up any possible confusion. Last but not least, we should not ignore the importance of cooperation in our society. Working with others helps develop our team spirit, which has become essential in this modern world of ours. After all, two heads are always better than one. (125 words)▆ Sample Essay for Task 2:College Is Not an Ivory TowerPeople often say that college is an ivory tower and life on campus is cut off from the harsh realities of the real world. College may have been an ivory tower before, but it is not so any more. We college students are under various kinds of pressure. First of all, most of us are burdened with a heavy tuition fee, which keeps on increasing every year. So some of us have to work over ten hours every week. Life for those who can get financial help from their parents is not easy either, as they very often have to follow their parents’ advice and take a major they don’t like. Finally those who are about to graduate suffer from a different kind of pressure: hunting for a job. It is no longer easy for a college student to get a decently paid job these days. (134 words)Unit 2 Learning a language▆Write a passage in about 100-120 words, taking either of the following titles:1) Why I like to learn English2) Why I hate to learn English▆Sample essay for Task 1:Why I like to learn EnglishI have learned English for about seven years. I should say that I am highly motivated to master English. First of all, learning English is useful, as it is becoming a world language and people from different countries often communicate with one another in English. If I am good at English, it will be much easier for me to communicate with them. Secondly, I like traveling a lot. A good mastery of English will make things much easier for me when traveling around the world. Finally, I like literature a lot. If I am very good at English, I can read great works by Shakespeare and Dickens and many other English writers instead of reading the translated versions.▆Sample essay for Task 2:Why I hate to learn EnglishI have learned English for about seven years. I should say the more I learn English, the more I hate it. First of all, learning English is boring. I have to memorize many new words or rely on a dictionary to frequently check unknown words. Doing so wastes a lot of my precious time. Secondly, I don’t understand why we have to learn a foreign language. I don’twant to go abroad and I can always find a job that doesn’t need English in China. Finally, I can always read translated versions of the books I want to read. So, i f I don’t have to learn English, I would rather use the time I spend on English to do things I like.Unit 3 Parents and Children1.In about 100-120 words, write about an incident of misunderstanding between you and your mother/father. Tell usabout how it all started and what happened in the end.2.In about 100-120 words, describe the similarities and differences in the way your father and mother show their lovefor you . Be sure to give examples.▆Sample essay for Task 1A misunderstanding between my mother and IOne afternoon, I was wandering along the main street of our small town with a friend. Suddenly I saw my mother. She was behaving very strangely. She looked around her before going quickly into a shop. When she came out, she had a box in her hand. I was terrified. I knew some of my villagers resorted to theft because they were poor. The thought that my mother could be one of them drove me crazy. I was determined to find out the truth from her. When I questioned her, tears filled her eyes. She told me she was collecting beer cans from some kind shop owners who offered them to her, but would feel embarrassed if she was seen by others. I cried and hugged her and felt sorry that I had misunderstood my own mother.▆Sample essay for Task 2:My parents’ loveMy parents differ greatly in showing their love for me. While my mother appears more anxious and depressed if anything goes wrong with me, my father tends to be silent and expresses his concern for me mainly through actions rather than words. I still remember the day when I left home for university. When my mother was in tears and kept giving me endless advice, my father remained silent. But when he saw an ice-cream man on the platform, he rushed towards him and got me an ice-cream just before the train started to move. I learned from my mother later that my father locked himself up in his room after returning home and cried for the first time in his life. I never expected that my departure would trigger such an emotional response from my father.Unit 4 Growing up1. In about 100-120 words, write about a conflict you once had with your parents .You can start with either of the following openings:1) I was very unhappy with my mother/father the other day…2) I was grateful that my mother/father criticised me the other day…2.Describe your attitude toward your father or mother when you were a teenger. When you could not agree with each other, what did you do? Use an incident from daily life to support the description.▆Sample essay for Task 1:I was very unhappy with my mother /father the other day. . .I was very unhappy with my father the other day. He must have called out to me for help with some housework, but I was so absorbed in reading that I did not hear him. He stepped into my room , apparently in anger, grabbed my book and threw it on the floor. I got upset and insisted he should pick it up and apologize to me. When he remained silent, I ran out and went off to play games with friends in the neighbourhood. When it was turning dark, I saw my father looking for me. He patted me on the head walked back home with me, his arm wrapped around my shoulder. When I got home, I saw my book had "returned" to my reading table.▆Sample essay for Task 2:I was very grateful that my mother /father criticised the other day. . .I was grateful that my mother criticised me the other day. I had been asking her for money to buy all kinds of things that my friends have--a new pair of shoes or some new clothes. Every time I was refused, I played the same trick -- threatening to pour the dish she cooked for the family into the river. My mother gave in each time I threatened to do that, but one day, she criticised me really hard. She scolded me for being selfish and inconsiderate and asked me to sit in acorner and reflect on my own behavior. I could not believe my mother could be so angry with me and I grew afraid. I learned a good lesson and changed a lot afterwards. I was thankful that my mother made me realize my mistakes.▆Sample essay for Task 2:I was so proud of my fatherMy father is a well-known carpenter in my village. I still remember that when I was in my mid-teens, I used to adore him make furniture for the villagers. He not only had good skills, but he was also willing to help the villagers with minor repairs such as mending a broken window frame or fixing a door, without charge. All the villagers respected him. They also paid me compliments when they saw me helping him , saying that I would grow up to become honest and industrious just like my father. I was so proud that I had a father who was so well respected.Unit 5 Knowing YourselfWrite a passage of about 100-120 words according to one of the instructions given below.1) Describe a few of your own personality traits. Then identify your favourite colour and see if the descriptions of the colour in Text B match your personality.2) Think of the person you admire most. Write two personality traits that you like most about this person. Remember to give an example for each personality trait.3) Imagine that you had been given a wish to change your life. Write about two personality traits that you would like to have and give your reasons.4) Write about a person whom you dislike most and give one or two reasons or examples why you dislike him or her so much.▆Sample essay 1)I have been described by many friends as a warm, sociable, and outgoing extravert. I find it easy to make new friends and I enjoy the company of people who share similar characteristics as I. When I am at a party, many people including those I do not know, will talk to me. I am not a great beauty, neither am I rich and intelligent. In fact, I am just a very simple person who is happy and smiles a lot. Maybe being happy is the attraction. I like bright colours, especially red. It is said that people who like red are passionate and have a lot of energy. I agree that I am enthusiastic about many things and like doing many things at the same time. So it seems there is some truth after all in what colours say about a person’s personality.▆Sample essay 2)The person I admire most is my father’s youngest brother. He is known to us as ba shu because he is the eighth son in a family of eleven. He is a high achiever. Since young, he has done well in his studies and work. For example, he received a prestigious scholarship to study at a well-known medical school in England. Today, at the age of 62, he is still as outgoing. He is a well-respected surgeon and has won many awards. What I like most about ba shu is his sensitive nature, especially toward children who are born unlucky. He has volunteered his time and made sacrifices to help those in poor and developing countries. His strong desire to bring happiness to these people has impress me a lot.▆Sample essay 3)If I were given a wish to have two personality traits, I would choose to be an optimistic person because those who are optimistic are usually satisfied and content with what they have. They seldom let sadness be a part of their life. I want to be happy and being optimistic is one way to remain happy. I also would like to be creative. I think that creativity is inherited. Some may disagree and say that we can learn to be creative. However, no matter how hard one learns, it is those born with the talent of creativity who will make a great name for themselves like the famous poet Li Bai and the richest man in the world, Bill Gates.▆Sample essay 4)There is no one person I disagree most but there are a couple of personality traits that I cannot tolerate: aggressiveness and selfishness. Aggressive people do not consider other’s feelings and will not think twice about hurting even those closest to them. I once had a neighbour who would beat his wife one day and appear loving the next. His wife lived in fear constantly but could do nothing because he was in control of her. Another personality trait I dislike is selfishness. Likeaggressive people, selfish people only think of themselves. There are many everyday examples of selfishness such as those not willing to lend things to others and those not wanting to share exam tips even with their best friends. If you know someone with a combination of aggressiveness and selfishness, you should consider whether to call him or her a friend.。

大学体验英语综合教程3 1-6单元作文

UNIT 1 The Panda's Weeping CryI’m one of the endangered species. I do not have many relatives left in this world, and that’s why people usually can only see us in the zoos. Although we are taken good care of and live comfortably there, we long for bushes in the mountains. As you know, we pandas are very critical about food. Young and fresh bamboo branches are our favorite. But sometimes bamboos would bloom and die. When this happens, many of us would have a hard time surviving and some may even die of hunger. Most people love us for what we are, but some still risk to hunt us for money and make us even rarer in the world. Please help us. We count on you!UNIT 2 Chen Ning YangThe son of a professor of mathematics of Tsinghua University, Dr. Yang was brought up in the peaceful and academically inclined atmosphere of the campus. He is a quiet, modest, and pleasant physicist, and also a hard-working person allowing himself very little leisure time. Among his many significant contributions to the field of physics, Yang proposed a theoretical framework that later became the basis of the present theory of the structure of matter at the smallest scales and highest energies. He worked together with Tsung Dao Lee and made a fundamental theoretical breakthrough in predicting that the law of conservation of parity would break down in the so-called weak interactions, for which they were awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in 1957.UNIT 3 Haier Mini-Washer Helps Me to Beat the ProblemI'm still single, and happy about it. I live in a rented single room and have to share the living room and bathroom with others. My work with an international company requires me to dress formally all the time, which means I cannot wear the same shirt for two days. Washing clothes by hand is the last thing I want to do after a busy day. Our bathroom is too small to allow space for a regular washing machine. But finally I found a solution to beat the problem, that is Haier Mini-Washer - the right kind of stuff for the people like me. Now I can always wear clean clothes to go to work. UNIT 4 Why We Should Use CloningHuman cloning technology is expected to result in several miraculous medical breakthroughs. We may be able to cure cancer if cloning leads to a better understanding. We often read about a girl who needs a kidney, a traffic accident victim who needs an eye, and a mountain climber who has lost an leg. All these people favor cloning and want the science to proceed. Some people are worried that the technology can also be used for reproducing humans, but for a couple with no fertility or a couple whose child had died, cloning has the potential to change their lives.UNIT 5 Learning English via the InternetThe Internet provides excellent sources for learning English. Most information on the Internet is presented in English. You can get the latest reports on the events all over the world as well as the information useful to your work or study. However, you should choose the materials you find not too difficult to read. Difficult articles and technical papers on the Internet that you struggle to understand will not help you to develop your reading skills. Remember: to learn English via the Internet you must keep your purpose in mind, or you will get lost on the Net.UNIT 6Jul. 2, 2013Dear Martha,What great news that you'll come to China! I don't know what your itinerary is but you must manage to come to my hometown Shanghai because it is reputed as the "Pearl in the Far East". The ancient city of Shanghai has a brand-new look now. As an international metropolis, Shanghai is the largest harbor port city and the biggest financial center in China. The rapid development of Putong Zone has added beauty and vigor to Shanghai.Shanghai is also known as the paradise for shoppers. I'm sure your suitcases will be crammed with various Chinese souvenirs when you go back to the States.Yours,Zhang Ming。

Unit51。

The Significance of Lifelong EducationDecades ago, due to the low standard of living in China, only a sm all percentage of the nation's population could receive college educ ation. Once given the opportunity, one would surely secure a well-p aid and much—respected job, which he or she would probably do for a lifetime. Therefore, to secure a college degree used to be th e ultimate goal of a person's education。

Today, however, we are living in what is called a "knowledge socie ty”, where creative ideas and innovations are generated at a fanta stic speed。

One must constantly renew one’s knowledge and upgr ade one’s skills so as to meet the needs of the changing world. Mor eover, at the stage of general education, it is pointless for a perso n to attempt to know everything。

When one is required to settle down to be a specialist in a specific field, one has to make an in-dep th study of the subject one is supposed to know。

So, buckle up and let me take you on a ride through all the fun and exciting things I learned.First off, we started learning about different types of literature, like poetry, drama, and prose. It was so interesting to read all those old poems and stories and try to figure out what they meant. I even got to write my own poem, which was super fun and helped me express my creative side.Next, we delved into the world of grammar and vocabulary. I must admit, at first I was a little scared of all those big words and confusing rules. But my teacher made it fun by playing games and doing interactive activities. I learned so much about sentence structure, verb tenses, and word meanings. Now I feel like a grammar guru! Then, we moved on to reading comprehension and analysis. We read some really cool books and articles, and discussed them in class. It was amazing to hear everyone's different perspectives and ideas. I learned how to think critically and write thoughtful responses to the texts we studied.Lastly, we worked on our speaking and listening skills. We did group discussions, presentations, and even acted out scenes from plays. It was nerve-wracking at first, but I soon gained confidence and realized how much I enjoy speaking in front of others.Overall, my experience in university English class has been awesome. I've learned so much, made new friends, and discovered a newfound love for the English language. I can't wait to see what other exciting adventures await me in the future!篇2Title: My Fun Adventure in Unit 4 of the New College Advanced English CoursebookHey guys! As you know, I've just started my freshman year and it's been a rollercoaster ride so far.First of all, let me tell you about my classes. I'm taking a bunch of different subjects like English, Math, Science, and History. English is my favorite because I love to read and write. But Math is like a nightmare for me, I just can't seem to get the hang of it. My Science class is pretty cool though, we get to do experiments and stuff. And History, well, it's a bit boring but I guess it's important to know about the past.Besides classes, I've also joined a few clubs on campus. I'm in the Drama Club, the Photography Club, and the Soccer Club. It's been so much fun meeting new people and trying out new things. The Drama Club is my favorite because I get to act andperform on stage. And the Soccer Club is great for staying active and healthy.Living on campus has been a whole new experience for me. I have a roommate who I get along with really well. We stay up late chatting and laughing, it's like having a sleepover every night. The food in the cafeteria is okay, but I miss my mom's home-cooked meals.Overall, university life has been challenging but also exciting. I'm learning so much and growing as a person. I can't wait to see what the next three years have in store for me. Thanks for listening to my story, guys. This unit is all about education, and it talks about different aspects of education like different forms of schools, education systems in different countries and the importance of education. In this unit, we learned about the education system in China, the United States, and the United Kingdom. It was really interesting to see how education is different in each country. For example, in China, students have to take a lot of exams to get into a good university, while in the United States, students have more freedom to choose their own path in education. We also talked about different forms of schools like public schools, private schools, and homeschooling. It was cool to learn about how each type of school works and the benefits and challenges of each one.One thing that stood out to me in this unit was the importance of education. We learned that education is not justabout getting good grades, but also about learning how to think critically, solve problems, and communicate effectively. Education is really important because it helps us become better people and make a positive impact on the world.Overall, I really enjoyed studying Unit 3 of Comprehensive English Course 2. Bye bye!篇2Hello everyone, today I want to talk about the essay title from Unit 3 of our College English Coursebook 2: "The Impact of Social Media on Modern Society".Social media is super popular in our daily lives nowadays. We use it to chat with friends, share photos, watch videos, and even learn new things. It's like a big virtual playground where we can have fun and connect with people from all over the world. But, like everything else, social media also has its good and bad sides. On one hand, it helps us stay connected with friends and family, and allows us to express ourselves freely. We can also learn new things and stay updated with news and trends. However, on the other hand, it can also be a source of distractionand addiction. Sometimes we spend too much time on social media and ignore our real-life responsibilities. Moreover, social media can also have negative effects on our mental health. People often compare their lives to others' highlight reels on social media, leading to feelings of envy and inadequacy. Cyberbullying is also a big problem on social media, causing emotional harm to many people. In conclusion, social media has become an integral part of modern society, but we need to use it responsibly and be aware of its impact on our lives. Let's enjoy the benefits of social media while also being mindful of its potential drawbacks. Thank you for listening!篇3Hey guys! Today I want to talk about the essay question from Unit 3 in our College English textbook. The question asks us to write an essay on a topic related to technology.Technology is super cool because it helps us do so many things! We can use our phones to chat with friends, play games, and even learn stuff on the internet. Technology is everywhere, and it's changing all the time.In my essay, I want to talk about how technology has changed the way we communicate. Back in the old days, people used to write letters or talk on the phone to stay in touch. But now, we can send messages instantly with apps like WhatsApp or Snapchat. It's so fast and easy!Another cool thing about technology is how it helps us learn. You can watch videos on YouTube to figure out how to do math or science problems. You can also use apps to practice speaking English or other languages. It's like having a teacher in your pocket! But even though technology is awesome, we have to be careful how we use it. We shouldn't spend too much time on our phones or computers. It's important to balance our screen time with other activities like playing outside or reading books. So, in conclusion, I think that technology is amazing, but we have to use it in a smart way. It helps us learn and communicate, but we also need to remember to take breaks and enjoy the world around us. Thanks for listening to my essay, guys!篇4Title: My Adventure at the ZooHey guys, guess what? Last weekend, my family and I went to the zoo and had so much fun! I was a little scared of the lions because they looked so fierce, but my dad told me they were just big kitties. And the elephants were so cute and playful, I wish I could ride on one!Next, we went to the bird section and saw so many colorful birds. Some of them could even talk! I tried to talk to one parrot, but it just squawked at me. It was really funny. After that, we went to the reptile house and saw snakes, lizards, and even a crocodile! I was a bit scared of the snakes because they slithered so fast, but my mom said they were more scared of us. I still kept my distance though. The best part of the day was when we got to feed the giraffes. They were so tall and had really long tongues! I got to feed one lettuce and it gently took it from my hand. It was amazing!Overall, visiting the zoo was such a blast. I learned so much about animals and had a great time with my family. Today I want to talk about the topic of "Education" in Unit 3 of our English textbook. Education is super important because it helps us learn new things and become smarter. In this unit, we learned about different types of education, like formal education and informal education.Formal education is when we go to school and learn from our teachers. We have subjects like math, English, science, and history. Informal education is when we learn things outside of school, like from our parents, friends, or even by reading books or watching videos.I think both types of education are cool because they help us grow and become better people. When we study hard and listen to our teachers, we can learn so many new things. And even when we're not in school, we can keep learning by exploring the world around us.I really like learning English because it helps me talk to people from different countries and learn about their cultures. It's so fun to learn new words and phrases, and I feel proud when I can understand and speak English well. So, let's keep working hard in school and never stop learning, okay? Education is the key to opening up new opportunities and making our dreams come true. Let's all be super smart and successful in the future!篇8Hello everyone! Today I'm going to talk about the topic of "Should college students be allowed to have part-time jobs". It'sa very important topic because many students have different opinions about this. Some students think it's a good idea to have part-time jobs because they can earn some extra money and gain work experience. They believe that it will help them to become more independent and responsible. For example, my friend Lucy works part-time in a café and she says she learns a lot of new skills and meet new people. On the other hand, some students think that having apart-time job will take up too much time and energy, which may affect their study. They argue that college life is already busy enough with classes, assignments, and exams, so they should focus on their studies instead of working. In my opinion, I think it depends on the individual. Some students may be able to handle both work and study well, while others may struggle to balance them. It's important to prioritize and manage your time effectively. As long as you can keep up with your academic work and not let your job interfere with your studies, having a part-time job can be a great opportunity to learn and grow.Overall, I think college students should be allowed to have part-time jobs, but they need to be responsible and make sure itdoesn't affect their academic performance. It's a good way to gain experience and prepare for the future. Thank you for listening to my opinion!篇9Title: My Life in UniversityHey everyone! Today I want to talk about my life in university. We go to the library, have lunch together, or just chill in the dorm. Sometimes we even have study groups to help each other with homework. It's so much fun!I also joined a club called the photography club. I love taking photos and this club lets me learn new skills and meet new people who share my hobby. We have contests and exhibitions, it's amazing!Living in university is great because I get to be independent.I do my own laundry, cook my own meals, and manage my own time. It's a bit challenging but I'm getting the hang of it. Plus, I have my friends to help me when I need it.Overall, university life is awesome. I'm learning new things, making new friends, and having a great time. I help the nurses with small tasks and visit the patients to cheer them up.

PartA1(答案)Once a man had a dream, he dreamed of a land of peace and harmony. He dreamed of a place where people were not judged by their skin color. He dreamed of a country where children of different races could play together. He dreamed of a nation where all people were equal。

Some people didn’t like his dream. They said it would never happen. Some people applauded his dream. They wanted to make it happen。

This noble vision has come true for some。

For others, it’s still just a fantasy。

Without her steady income, Nancy had to cut back on her daily expenses. Sometimes she did not even have the money to pay the premiums for the various kinds of insurance she needed. Fortunately, through her own hard work, she has now got through the most difficult time. She is determined to continue pursuing her vision of a better life.Unit 2Shortly after he achieved freedom Henson became intent on assisting fugitive slaves. It was the 100th anniversary of Einstein's theory of relativity and the 50th anniversary of his death. In 1905 Einstein published five highly important essays in the history of science, thus revolutionizing physics. George's father used to impress on him the need to undergo all kinds of hardship in quest of excellence. He also taught him that nothing in the world could be taken for granted. Even today, George still remembers how his father would quote Aesop's famous saying "Gratitude is the sign of noble souls" and tell him to accord the greatest importance to it. Unit 6II. Translation Here and there we see young artists who stand out from other people. They may be in worn out jeans all the year round, or walk barefoot / in bare feet even in winter, or drink to excess, or cling to the fancy of creating a masterpiece without actually doing any creative work. In fact, many of them act like this just to look the part, or to be "in tune with" other artists. Early in his childhood, he learned that unless he so exertedhimself as to rise above his limitations, he could not earn a living, and unless he succeeded in making a living on his own, he could not win/gain the respect of others. That was the price he had to pay for his dignity as a human being. Tom applied for numerous jobs, only to be turned down, before he finally got one as a delivery boy for a Pizza Hut. He then worked as a sales representative for a sports wear company in a territory no one else would want. Today he owns a fairly profitable retail shop in his hometown, and hires several people to work for him on straight commission.Unit 8Dolly the sheep resulted from a cloning experiment by a group of Scottish scientists in 1997. A fierce debate on human cloning has ever since been going on. This contentious issue had focused on ethical and social implications of the technology: what the technology might do to the very meaning of human reproduction, child rearing, individuality, et cetera. The majority of scientists are adamantly opposed to reproductive cloning and support therapeutic cloning for treating diseases. The reason is that therapeutic cloning does not involve any type of risk to human life and actually provides tremendous potential for the relief of suffering in human beings. Scientists believe that with policies and monitoring in place to ensure that therapeutic cloning is used safely, we canal benefit fromthis procedure.。

Unit One FriendshipAs is commonly acknowledged / It is commonly recognised that humans are social animals. Bonded together in a community, we naturally expect to have friends. As to what friendship is, peopl e have different notions / ideas. Some make friends for mutual utility. Once the ground for such friendship disappears, the friendship also breaks up. However, a lot more peopl e long for "soul pals"— those who possess virtues and with whom we can go through trials and tribulations together. Such friendships keep us away from greed and violence and encourage us to have the courage of our convictions. Such is what we call "true and perfect friendship".1. Bob and I became brother-like friends in our childhood. We played, dined and discussed our ambitions together. Once grown up, he started for the West to make his fortune while I became a policeman in New York. Before his departure, we had dinner together and we agreed that we woul d meet at the same place exactly twenty years from that date and time, no matter what our conditions might be or from what distance we might have to come. Then came the day we were supposed to meet. I was on my beat then. Walking up to the appointed place which had been turned into a hardware store, I saw a man standing there with an unlighted cigar in his mouth. Before I coul d speak, he told me that he was waiting for a friend by the name of Jimmy Wells. When he struck a match to light his cigar, I saw a pale face with keen eyes and a scar. I recognized him immediately. It was Bob, and it was also the face of the man wanted by the Chicago Police. For a moment I felt like telling him to escape right away. After all, we had been friends for so many years and he had travel ed all the way to see me! But then my sense of duty told me the right thing to do. I said good-bye to him and continued my patrol, his last words still ringing in my ear: “I’ll wait forhalf an hour. Jimmy will keep his promise if he’s alive…” I then sent for a plain clothes man and had Bob arrested.2.An Important Friend in My LifeLi Qiang, one of my classmates, is fun to be with. He is always wearing a broad smile as if life is forever "sunshine and butterflies". One day, I revealed to him my worries and anxieties: I, an ordinary-looking girl, was 177 centimeters tall, even taller than any of the boys in my class. I thought no boy woul d like to date me. Besides, I was very poor at my academic courses. He suggested that I should learn to be myself and then he introduced me to a fashion show team of the university. Encouraged, I decided to change myself. After a 3-month training program on weekends, I could perform beautifully as a model, and surprisingly, I could concentrate on the required academic courses as well. The applauses I won at each fashion show and the scholarship I earned proved that being myself was terrific. Since then, my life has changed a l ot. Thus, Li Qiang became an important friend of mine.Last semester, we began to help young people who suffer pressures from physical defects, academic failures or financial problems. We set up a Confidence Club. Those who come to us for help find our work definitely beneficial. Our friendship has l ed me into a sparkling, rewarding life.Unit Two Love2.What Do Girl Students Look for in Love and Life?In order to know about girl students’ opinion about love and life, a survey with girl students was conducted in 2005 in two universities —Chongqing University of Technology andBusiness and East China Normal University. The survey sought answers to two questions: Wh at do you look for first in a boyfriend? What’s the most important thing for a happy life? About one third of the stud ents chose personality as the top factor in choosing a boyfriend, followed by 27 percent focusing on abilities. Next came common interests and goals, favoured by 17 percent, with only 14 percent of students claiming appearance to be uppermost in their minds. Fewer still, 11 percent, rated economic status as the first consideration. As to their views about a happy life, nearly seventy percent of the girls attached the greatest importance to marriage and family. “Career” was given top priority by just und er 20 percent, while even fewer, around 9 percent, believed that money was the key to a happy life.Based on the survey, we may conclude that nowadays, girl students generally hold a rational attitude towards love and life. Admittedly, the improved material conditions of life explain why girls take economic status and money rather lightly. But contrary to the popular view that girls are more concerned about self-development in the workplace and social status, they still regard upon marriage and family life as central to a happy life.Unit Three Happiness1. Man Does Not Live by Bread AloneNo one woul d doubt the truth that man’s existence relies essentially on material things. We need them to get fed, clothed and sheltered. Once we are living near the breadline, we’ll feel frustrated and miserable. However, our contentment does not merely lie in material things. This is especially the case in modern times. The fast-developing economy has noticeably improved our lives andfulfilled most of our material needs. Then there comes the need of spiritual satisfaction, which is derived from good health, close friends, a loving spouse, well-raised children, a home built on love, a clear conscience, a worthy goal and an enjoyable job. Whil e material things may lose their charm over time, spiritual satisfaction will bring us lasting happiness. Therefore, to live a happy life, we should focus more on those things that meet our spiritual demands. After all, when our need for bread is met, happiness will not come unl ess we feel spiritually satisfied.Unit Four Health1. AIDS Across the EarthAIDS has killed and is threatening to kill millions all across the earth. Several million infections are reported by WHO each year. The virus does not care whether you are black or white, male or female, young or ol d. It will attack you as l ong as you are a human. Today, AIDS has become the leading killer of young adults and is turning the chil dren whose parents suffer the disease into orphans. It is no exaggeration to say that we live und er the shadow of AIDS.There are several possible causes for such a situation: unsafe sexual intercourse; sharing or reusing contaminated needles; transfusion of contaminated blood or blood products; an infected person’s pregnancy, giving birth and breastfeeding, etc. Unfortunately, our ignorance, prejudice and silence have carried the situation to a desperate extreme. Patients are isolated or treated as outcasts by their families and their communities. AIDS victims feel ashamed to be identified as such and try hard to hide their disease. For this reason, they cannot get immediate medical treatment. Our harmful attitudes towards the disease and its victims have actually placed more people at risk.In our fight against this deadly disease, we should educate people on how to avoid being infected with the disease and how to lead a healthy and secure life and, more importantly, how to treat AIDS patients properly. Only in this way can we really bring AIDS und er control.Unit Five Education1. The Significance of Lifelong EducationDecades ago, due to the low standard of living in China, only a small percentage of the nation's population could receive college education. Once given the opportunity, one would surely secure a well-paid and much-respected job, which he or she would probably do for a lifetime. Therefore, to secure a college degree used to be the ultimate goal of a person's education.Today, however, we are living in what is called a "knowledge society", where creative ideas and innovations are generated at a fantastic speed. One must constantly renew one's knowledge and upgrade one's skills so as to meet the needs of the changing world. Moreover, at the stage of general education, it is pointless for a person to attempt to know everything. When one is required to settle down to be a specialist in a specific field, one has to make an in-depth study of the subject one is supposed to know. In this sense, general education can provide students with only a passport to lifel ong education. As Robert Maynard Hutchins once said, the object of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives. In my opinion, life in modern society is not only a process of "learning to live" but also a process of "living to learn". The slogan "Live and Learn" can best reflect the concept of lifelong education.Unit Six Intercultural Communication1. My Views on Cultural DifferencesIn my opinion, cultural differences have more advantages than disadvantages. First of all, it is cultural differences that make our world so colorful. If you go to a foreign country, you will be impressed not only by its physical environment but also by its cultural environment —its foods, clothes, customs, social practices, etc. Differences between cultures have always been a source of joy and inspiration.Secondly, differences in culture enrich human civilization. Different cultures compete with as well as learn from each other. Roman culture was model ed on Greek culture, which had once borrowed a l ot from Egyptian culture. American culture is also a blend of many different cultures.Thirdly, differences in culture give each culture its unique identity. A culture is usually seen in relation to other cultures. Chinese culture distinguishes itself from others by its peculiar concepts and things that can hardly be found elsewhere.Of course, cultural differences may cause conflicts and misunderstandings. But interdependence, common interests and mutual goals of different nations always outweigh differences in culture. Nations with different cultures shoul d learn from each other and live peacefully together. To this end, we shoul d be more tolerant to other cultures while preserving, protecting and developing our own.Unit Seven The Olympic Spirit2. Benefits from Hosting the Olympic GamesJuly of 2001 witnessed a wave of national excitement in our land: Beijing had won the bid to host the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. It symbolized the strength of our country androused our national pride.Since then a l ot of changes have taken place in Beijing. Citizens of Beijing are now enjoying better transportation facilities, and the physical environment has improved significantly. With the construction of athletic venues, municipal infrastructure and other relevant facilities, new job opportunities have been created. A boom in Olympic-related businesses and industries has taken place not only in Beijing but also elsewhere.Hosting the Olympic Games is also a mega cultural event. It is a good opportunity to increase the international profile of the host city. Now more and more people are drawn to Beijing, and there has appeared a new boom in tourism. Preparations for the 2008 Olympic Games have given rise to numerous cultural and educational programs focusing on the citizens' commitment and dedication to this international event. Such programs have not only generated a widespread interest in sports but have also promoted the citizens' social, cultural and ethical visions. We must try our best to capitalize on this opportunity as fully as we can.Unit Eight Man and Society1. How to Survive in a Competitive SocietyCompetition in present-day society is fierce and cruel. It exists in different lines of work. For example, different musicians compete for each seat in their orchestra, and different orchestras compete for the privilege of making recordings with prestigious studios. Footballers compete for positions within the same team, and they work together to compete against other teams for championships. In short, whatever we do, we may feel the pressure of competition. However, instead of deploring competition, we should see the interrelationship betweencompetition and cooperation. Cooperation and competition exist side by side and they are both unavoidable in human society. For example, while competing with other factories, producers and distributors of the same factory must cooperate and make coordinated efforts to satisfy the needs of customers. Business rivals have to cooperate with one another when their common market is threatened. Therefore, competition alone will not bring us success in what we are doing. In the face of competition, we should keep acquiring new skills and updating our knowledge so as to enhance our competitive ability. At the same time, we shoul d learn the techniques of cooperating with others in the most effective manner.。

Unit 1A decade ago, Nancy did what so many Americans dream about. She quit an executive position and opened/set up a household device store in her neighborhood. People like Nancy made the decision primarily for the improvement in the quality of their lives. But, to run a business on a small scale is by no means an easy job. Without her steady income, Nancy had to cut back on her daily expenses. Sometimes she did not even have the money to pay the premiums for the various kinds of insurance she needed.Fortunately, through her own hard work, she has now got through the most difficult time. She determined to continue pursuing her vision of a better life.Unit 2Shortly after he achieved freedom Henson became intent on assisting fugitive slaves. He secretly returned to the United States from Canada several times to help others to travel the Underground Railroad to freedom. Once some slave catchers closed in on the escaping slaves and Henson when they were on the run. He disguised them and successfully avoided capture. Later he built a small settlement in Dresden, Canada for escaped slaves, setting up a chapel and a school. He held to the conviction that slavery would be abolished, and the day was bound to come when racial discrimination on longer existed.Unit 3It is almost impossible to keep a determined burglar out. All you can do is discourage him for a few minutes, thus exposing him to police patrols. Common sense tells us that lighting is a barrier to criminal activity. A light should be fixed in the doorway and switched on at night. Make sure/Assure yourself that you don’t leave the door on the latch if you happen to be the last to come in. If you decide to buy a sophisticated electronic alarm system, be sure to ask for its sings and put them up on both windows and doors. In addition you may have it hooked up to a police station.Unit 4What was remarkable about 2005 was perhaps that the United Nations declared it ‘The World Year of physics’. It was the 100th anniversary of Einstein’s theory of relat ivity and the 50th anniversary of his death. In 1905 Einstein published five highly important essays in the history of science, thus revolutionizing physics. His great achievements can be credited to his impressive powers of imagination, constant questioning, and not giving a fig for authority. It is beyond doubt that Einstein was the greatest scientist in the 20th century.Unit 5Amid the atmosphere of Thanksgiving George was immersed in the diary left to him by his father, who died at sea after he completed two successive tripsaround the world. The diary brought back every moment George had spent with his father and may of the specific things his father did on his behalf. George’s father used to impress on him the need to undergo all kinds of hardship in quest of excellence. Even today, George still remembers how his father would quote Aesop’s famous saying “Gratitude is the sign of noble souls” and tell him to accord the greatest importance to it.Unit 6Here and there we see young artists who stand out from other people. They may be in worn-out jeans all the year round, or walk barefoot/in bare feet even in winter, or drink to excess, or cling to the fancy of creating a masterpiece without actually doing any creative work. In fact, many of them act like this just to look the part, or to be in tune with other artists. They have forgotten that only through persistent effort can one achieve success.Unit 7Tom was born a cripple, with one of his lower limbs useless. Early in his childhood, he learned that unless he so exerted himself as to rise above his limitations, he could not earn a living, and unless he succeeded in making a living on his own, he could not win/gain the respect of others. That was theprice he had to pay for his dignity as a human being.Tom applied for numerous jobs, only to be turned down, before he finally got one as a delivery boy for a pizza Hut. He then worked as a sales representative for a sportswear company in a territory no one else would want. Today he owns a fairly profitable retail shop in his hometown, and hires several people to work for him.Unit 8Dolly the sheep resulted from a cloning experiment by a group of Scottish scientists in 1997. A fierce debate on human cloning has ever since been going on. This contentious issue has focused on ethical and social implications of the technology: what the technology might do to the very meaning of human reproduction, child rearing, individuality, et cetera. The majority of scientists are adamantly opposed to reproductivecloning and support therapeutic cloning for treating diseases. The reason is that therapeutic cloning does not involve any type of risk to human life and actually provides tremendous potential for the relief of suffering in human beings. Scientists believe that with policies and monitoring in place to ensure that therapeutic cloning is used safely, we can all benefit from this procedure.。
