WritingPart I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. In ancient times the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches. In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates for the doctor degree. Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same question, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modem industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory. Generally, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines. One type of test is sometimes called an “ objective” test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like correct answers to students who have not learned the material properly.1.In the Middle Ages students( ).A.took objective testsB.specialized in one subjectC.were timed by electric clocksD.never wrote exams正确答案:D解析:细节题。

Social media platforms have become an integral part of daily life, allowing individuals to connect with others across the globe. However, this shift in communication has raised concerns about the impact on face-to-face interactions and the potential loss of traditional social skills. One of the most popular social media platforms is Instagram, which is known for its focus on visual content. Users can share photos, videos, and stories, and follow others who share similar interests. While Instagram can be a great way to stay connected with friends and discover new things, it also has its downsides.A recent study found that excessive use of Instagram can lead to feelings of loneliness and depression. The constant comparison with others’ seemingly perfect lives can create a sense of inadequacy. Additionally, the platform’s algorithm can create a filter bubble, where users are only exposed to content that aligns with their existing beliefs and interests, thus limiting their exposure to diverse perspectives.Despite these concerns, many people find Instagram to be a valuable tool for networking and personal growth. It can provide a platform for artists, writers, and entrepreneurs to showcase their work and connect with potential audiences. Moreover, it can be a source of inspiration and motivation, as users are exposed to the achievements and stories of others.Questions:1、What is the main topic of the passage?A) The benefits of using social media platforms.B) The negative effects of Instagram on social interactions.C) The history of social media platforms.D) The role of technology in modern communication.2、Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a potential negative effect of using Instagram?A) Feelings of inadequacy.B) Limited exposure to diverse perspectives.C) Improved communication skills.D) Increased feelings of loneliness and depression.3、What is the author’s attitude towards Instagram?A) Highly critical.B) Indifferent.C) Positive and supportive.D) Ambiguous.Answers:1、B) The negative effects of Instagram on social interactions.2、C) Improved communication skills.3、D) Ambiguous.第三题Reading Passage:In the small town of Greenfield, there was a long-standing tradition of the annual Greenfield Festival. This shift is primarily due to the convenience and flexibility it offers to students. Online courses allow individuals to learn at their own pace, from any location, and often at a lower cost compared to traditional in-person classes. However, despite these advantages, online learning also comes with its own set of challenges. One of the main concerns is the potential for reduced social interaction. In traditional classrooms, students have the opportunity to engage with their peers and professors, which can enhance their learning experience. Online students, on the other hand, may feel isolated and disconnected from the academic community. This can lead to a lack of motivation and engagement in the course material.Another challenge is the need for self-discipline. Online courses require students to be self-motivated and organized. Without the structure of a traditional classroom, students must set their own schedules and manage their time effectively. This can be difficult for some individuals, especially thosewho are accustomed to the routine of attending classes on campus.Despite these challenges, many online learners find that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. They appreciate the ability to work around their other commitments, such as full-time jobs or family responsibilities. Additionally, online courses often provide access to a wider range of resources and expertise than traditional courses.1.The primary reason for the growing interest in online education is:a) the opportunity for social interactionb) the flexibility and convenience it offersc) the lower cost compared to traditional in-person classesd) the access to a wider range of resources2.What is one of the main concerns mentioned about online learning?a) The convenience of learning at one’s own paceb) The potential for reduced social interactionc) The lower cost of online coursesd) The increased access to expertise3.According to the passage, which of the following is a challenge for online learners?a) The ease of engaging with peers and professorsb) The need for self-discipline and organizationc) The lower cost of online coursesd) The ability to work around other commitmentsAnswers:1.b) the flexibility and convenience it offers2.b) The potential for reduced social interaction3.b) The need for self-discipline and organization五、补全对话(本大题有5小题,每小题3分,共15分)第一题A: Excuse me, could you help me with some English vocabulary?B: Sure, I’d be happy to. 2019年成人高考专升本《英语》试题及答案(四)

2019年成人高考专升本《英语》试题及答案(四)Reading ComprehensionDirections:There are five reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by four questions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose one best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Human needs seem endless. They might be regarded as making up several levels. When there is enough money to satisfy one level of needs, another level appears. The first and most basic level of needs involves food. Once this level is satisfied, the second level of needs, clothing and some sort of shelter, appears. By the end of World War Ⅱ , these needs were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. Then a third level appeared. It included such items as automobiles and new houses.By 1957 or 1958 this third level of needs was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s, a fourth level of needs appeared:the"life-enriching" level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction, that is, the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation, this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement, and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services. Among them are vacation trips ,the best medical and dental care, and recreation. Also included here are fancy goods and the latest styles in clothing. On the fourth level,a lot of money is spent on services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods.A fifth level would probably involve needs that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime, and prejudice. After filling our stomachs, our clothes closets, our garages, our teeth, and our minds, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure to enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.1. According to the passage, man will begin to think about such needs as housing and clothing only whenA. he has saved up enough moneyB. he has grown dissatisfied with his simple shelterC. he has satisfied his hungerD. he has learned to build houses答案:C2. It can be inferred from the passage that by the end of World WarⅡ,most AmericansA. were very richB. lived in povertyC. did not own automobilesD. had own automobiles答案:C3. What is the main concern of man on the fourth level?A. The more goods the better.B. The more “39” items the better.C. The more mental satisfaction the better.D. The more earnings the better.答案:C4. The author tends to think that the fifth levelA. would be little better than the fourth levelB. may be a lot more desirable than the first fourC. can be the last and most satisfying levelD. will become attainable before the government takes actions答案:CIt was a case of emergency. The four-year-old girl awoke and smelled smoke. She couldn39;t wakeher mother, so she dialed zero. An operator immediately called the fire department. Help was sent, and a tragedy avoided.Days before this emergency, the mother had taught her child how to telephone for help. Children asyoung as two and one-half years old can be taught to use the phone in emergency situations. Here aresome points.Memorizing certain facts is important. Teach your children their names, and the section of town where you live. Try to keep what they learn within their abilities. Simple information, learned well, is better than difficult information only partly learned.Be sure your children know how to use the telephone. They should be taught to dial "zero"for the operator,at the very least. And they should be taught to dial "911" if it is used in your town.Practice over a period of several days. Over-learning is necessary so the child can act automatically in case of emergency. If you would like a booklet giving instructions on calling for help, write Telephone For Help,Box 99, Bowling Green Station, New York, NY 10004.1. Based on this passage,over-learning is good becauseA. simple information is usedB. children should know their namesC. it helps children act automaticallyD. difficult information is only partly learned答案:C2. Paragraph 4 talks about dialing "911". This number is probablyA. the operatorB. an emergency numberC. a practice number for childrenD. used to keep children calm答案:B3. One thing the passage does NOT tell you to do isA. call your neighborB. practice several timesC. teach children how to use the telephoneD. have children memorize some simple facts答案:A4. What is the main idea of the passage.A. Give instructions on calling for help.B. Partly-learned information is useless.C. Teach children how to deal with emergencies.D. Keep what children learn within their abilities.答案:COceanography has been defined as "The application of all sciences to the study of the sea"Before the nineteenth century scientists with an interest in the sea were few and far between.Certainly Newton considered some theoretical aspects of it in his writings, but he was reluctant to go to sea to further his work. For most people the sea was remote, and with the exception of early intercontinental travelers or others who earned a hying from the sea, there was little reason to ask many questions about it, let alone to ask what lay beneath the surface. The first time that the question"What is at the bottom of the oceans."39;?"; had to be answered with any commercial consequence was when the laying of a telegraph cable from Europe to America was proposed. The engineer had to know the depth profile( 起伏) of the route to estimate the length of cable that had to be manufactured. It was to Maury of the US Navy that the Atlantic Telegraph Company turned ,in 1853,for information on this matter. In the 1840s, Maury had been responsible for encouraging voyages during which soundings(测水深)were taken to investigate the depths of the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Later, some of his findings aroused much popular interest in his book The Physical Geography of the Sea.The cable was laid, but not until 1866 was the connection made permanent and reliable. At the early attempts, the cable failed and when it was taken out for repairs it was found to be covered in living growths, a fact which defied contemporary scientific opinion that there was no life in the deeperparts of the sea. Within a few years oceanography was under way. In 1872 Thomson led a scientific expedition (考察), which lasted for four years and brought home thousands of samples from the sea.Their classification and analysis occupied scientists for years and led to a five-volume report, the last volume being published in 1895.5. The proposal to lay a telegraph cable from Europe to America made oceanographic studies take onA. an academic aspectB. a military aspectC. a business aspectD. an international aspect答案:C6. It was __________that asked Maury for help in oceanographic studies.A. the American NavyB. some early intercontinental travelersC. those who earned a living from the seaD. the company which proposed to lay an undersea cable答案:D7. The aim of the voyages Maury was responsible for in the 1840s was __________A. to make some sounding experiments in the oceansB. to collect samples of sea plants and animalsC. to estimate the length of cable that was neededD. to measure the depths of the two oceans答案:D8. This passage is mainly about __________A. the beginnings of oceanographyB. the laying of the first undersea cableC. the investigation of ocean depthsD. the early intercontinental communications答案:A.。

Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. In sport the sexes are separate. (76) Women and men do not run or swim in the same races. Women are less strong than men. That at least is what people say. Women arc called” the weaker sex” ,or, if men want to please them, “the fair sex”. But boys and girls are taught together at schools and universities. There are women who are famous Prime Ministers, scientists and writers. And women live longer than men. A European woman can expect to live until the age of 74, a man only until he is 68.Are women’s bodies really weaker? The fastest men can run a mile in 4 minutes. The best women need 4. 5 minutes. Women’s speeds are always slower than men’s, but some facts are surprising. Some of the fastest women swimmers today are teenage girls. One of them swam 400 metres in 4 minutes 21. 2 seconds when she was only 16.The first “Tarzan” in films was an Olympic swimmer, Johnny Weissmuller. His fastest 400 metres was 4 minutes 59. 1 seconds, which is 37. 9 seconds slower than a girl 50 years later! This does not mean that women are catching men up. Conditions are very different now, and sport is much more serious. It is so serious that some women athletes are given hormone(荷尔蒙) injections. At the Olympics a doctor has to check whether the women athletes are really women or not. It seems sad that sport has such problem. Life can be very complicated when there are two separate sexes!16.Women are called “the weaker sex” because________.A.women do as much work as menB.people tilde women are weaker than menC.sport is easier for men than for womenD.in sport the two sexes are always together正确答案:B解析:事实细节题。

二、阅读理解(11-30)When a consumer finds that an item she or he bought is faulty or in some other way does not live up to the manufacturer's claim for it, the first step is to present the warranty(保单), or any other records which might help, at the store of purchase. In most cases, this action will produce results. However, if it does not, there are various means the consumer may use to gain satisfaction.A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain directly to the store manager. In general, the "higher up" the consumer takes his or her complaint, the faster he or she can expect it to be settled. In such a case, it is usually settled in the consumer's favour, assuming he or she has a just claim. Consumers shoud complain in person whenever possible, but if they cannot get to the place of purchase, it is acceptable to phone or write the complaint in a letter.Complaining is usually most effective when it is done politely but firmly, and especially when the consumer can demonstrate what is wrong with the item in question. If this cannot be done, the consumer will succeed best by presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. For example, "The left speaker does not work at all and the sound coming out of the right one is unclear" is better than "This stereo(立体声音响)does not work."The store manager may advise the consumer to write to the manufacturer. If so, the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely and as firmly as possible. But if a polite complaint does not achieve the desired result, the consumer can go a step further. She or he can threaten to take the seller to court or report the seller to a private or public organization responsible for protecting consumers‘rights.11.When a consumer finds that his purchase has a fault in it, the first thing he should do is to ______.A. complain personally to the managerB. threaten to take the matter to courtC. write a firm letter of complaint to the store of purchaseD. show some written proof of the purchase to the store答案:D解析:答案D。
