Unit 3Video ScriptsWH=Wang Hao; A=Alice; YF=Yi FeiWH:So, guys, I think we need to agree on the scope of our research.A:OK. Like what exactly?WH:Well, we already know that we want to look at the spending habits of university students, right?A:Right.WH:But not all the university students are the same. There are still a lot of variables that can affect our study.YF:I was thinking the same thing. I am not sure if we want to look at the students just at one university or at several universities.WH:Exactly. The university students in different parts of the country may have different spending habits. For example, our university is in a first-tier city, soour living expenses are higher. But there are lots of universities in second- orthird-tier cities, or suburban areas, where things are much cheaper.YF:So, let’s just f ocus on our university. It will be much simpler.A:Sorry, but I don’t agree. We have to look at data from more than just one university to make our research more reliable. It will be a little bit moredifficult, but it would be worth the effort.WH:I think Alice is right. We should include universities in different places. Also, we should bear in mind that even at the same university there are manydifferent types of students.YF:What do you mean by different types of students?WH:I mean students in different years, students from different backgrounds, that kind of thing.A:Right. So we should ask the students for some background information, which can help us analyze the data we collect.YF:I’m not sure about that. It might make them feel uncomfortable to say what they really think. Actually, could we make it totally anonymous?WH:I think we can do both. We can make it anonymous but ask background questions at the same time.YF:That should work.Audio ScriptsOK, everyone. Today we’re going to look at how to design a questionnaire for your research. So, as we’ve talked about many times, the key to conducting any type of research is to narrow your focus. You need to be able to frame your study in very specific terms, and then write your questions. You’ll basically be choosing between closed questions and open-ended questions. Generally, closed questions make it easier for you to collect and analyze your data, so you’ll definitely want to use closed questions if you plan to survey a lot of people; otherwise, you’ll have to read and interpret all the individual answers. However, open-ended questions may be the only way to get at individual responses beyond the limit of closed questions. But also for both you and the respondent, open-ended questions can help make the answers more engaging and informative. Now, not only must you phrase your questions very carefully, but also consider the sequence of the questions you ask. Think about the experience of the respondent as they complete the survey: Logically ordered questions will make the questionnaire easier to complete; therefore respondents will be more likely to complete the survey. All right. Now you’ve got a great variety of clear questions that are in the perfect order. But don’t forget that at the beginning of your questionnaire you need to add a note about the purpose of your research and how the data will be used. Let’s say you get this all done. You’re ready to go, right? Hmm? Nope. Sorry.Next you’ll need to pilot your questionnaire before administering it in your study. Even the best-written questionnaire can benefit from rehearsal. And as the author, you will inevitably overlook some aspects of the questionnaire while writing it. These will come to light in the pilot.A pilot also allows you to confer with respondents afterwards to gauge their understanding of the questions and get any feedback they may have. You can then use that feedback to revise the questionnaire as needed.。

Unit 2Video ScriptsGood afternoon, everyone. My name is Francis Windall, and I’m here today to talk to you about the effects of negative emotions. As we go through our day-to-day lives, we experience a wide range of emotions. On any given day, it is likely that the average person will have many positive feelings, such as happiness, excitement or pride, but also many negative emotions, such as sadness, anger, fear or even despair. But what happens when we feel more negative emotions than positive ones? And what are the effects of not being able to process our negative emotions effectively? There was an article about depression published in 1991 by the psychologist Susan Nolen-Hoeksema. She said that spending too much time thinking about negative emotions can make someone’s depression last longer. It can also give a negative outlook on life, make people less motivated, and also interfere with their abilities such as problem-solving. Being unable to process your negative emotions can also have a bad effect on your relationships with others. An experiment led by Sacco showed that people with prolonged depression are more likely to experience rejection and a loss of social support. The tendency to keep thinking about these negative emotional experiences is linked to a number of lifestyle choices and coping behaviors, such as drinking too much and overeating. These behaviors then have a negative impact on physical health. There is evidence to suggest that repeatedly thinking about our negative emotional experiences can itself result in poor physical health. Researchers have found that this kind of negative thinking can lead to high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and even strokes.Despite all the negative aspects of negative emotions, it is still very important that we acknowledge them. In fact, suppressing our emotions can be just as damaging as thinking about them too much. A 2013 study by Chapman found that people who suppressed their emotions were more likely to die early, and more likely to be diagnosed with cancer. So, while it’s clear that there are many downsides to dwelling on ournegative feelings, our health is also at risk if we do not dwell on them at all. Thank you very much.Audio ScriptsP=Presenter; DN=Dr. NugentP: Welc ome to “Keep in Mind”, where we discuss the latest thinking in psychology. On today’s show we’re talking about negative emotions. With usis Dr. Arabella Nugent, a professor of psychology and the author of the bookIt’s OK To Be Sad. Dr. Nugent, welcome to the show.DN:Thank you for having me.P:Can you give us a brief summary of what you discuss in the book?DN:Yes. I’m interested in how we deal with negative emotions. I think the first thing we have to do is to accept them. There’s no point pretendin g that we’renot feeling sad or angry. That wi ll only make things worse. It’s also importantto remember that there are actually good reasons why we have negativeemotions, from an evolutionary perspective. Fear, anger and disgust prepareus for flight, fight and avoidance respectively. Even sadness is a useful emotion, as it can help us to be less judgmental.P:So if acceptance is a first step, what methods are there for then dealing with negative emotions?DN:There are a number of methods. One is “visualization”. In order to avoid repeatedly thinking about negative emotions, try to do the following mentalexercise regularly: Picture your best possible self in any given situation. Howwould you react? What would you do? What would you say? If you do thisregularly, it can help you to be ready when negative emotions do start to affectyou. Another technique is to practice active gratitude.P:Do you mean that we should be thankful that we are feeling angry or sad? DN:No, not exactly. What I mean is that we should take time to think about the things, and the people, that are good in our lives. Every now and again weshould express our gratitude for those things, or to those people. Of course, theway we express gratitude varies from culture to culture. People from somecultures, such as China and South Korea, tend to express gratitude by givingsomething back to the person they are grateful to, while other cultures favorverbal means of expressing gratitude. The important thing, however youexpress your gratitude, is that doing so can put you in a much more positivemindset, and that makes you more resilient. P:Fascinating advice, Dr. Nugent. Thank you. DN:My pleasure.。

Unit 4Video ScriptsT=Tom; SXH=Sun Xiaohui; JY=Jia YiT: Xiaohui, I heard that today’s meeting will raise the issue of a new CSR campaign?SXH: Yes, the last campaign has achieved its objective, and it’s time for a new one.T: Oh, OK. So, just to be clear, CSR is basically a form of advertising, right? SXH: Well, not entirely. I would say it’s more a way for a company to show its true values. I t’s actually really important that the company should trulybelieve in the issues that the campaigns are devoted to.T: Ah, I see.SXH: Most companies see it as a chance to give back to the community and wider society in which they live.T: Ah!JY: Good morning!SXH & T: Morning!JY: So, today I’d like to announce that we will be starting a new CSR campaign, and it will be the focus of our work in the coming weeks. Tom,can you take (the) minutes so we know what has been decided?T: Of course.JY: Do you have any thoughts?T: Yes, I have a question. What do Chinese companies usually support for CSR?JY: It depends, but it can be things connected to the environment, or to helping disadvantaged groups ...T: I see, like trying to reduce poverty?SXH: That’s right. In my last company we helped migrant workers travel home for the Spring Festival.T: How do you do that?SXH: Migrant workers constitute a key part of China’s labor force, and most of them work away from their hometowns. They usually return home for theSpring Festival.T: When the traffic volume is extremely high!SXH: Yeah. My last company specialized in auto-transport, so they started an initiative to provide transport for those working in this city.T: Wow! It seems to me that we have to decide on a CSR campaign based on our company’s mission.JY: That’s one possibility, but we can also start campaigns that have nothing to do with our business but help meet the urgent needs of society, whetherat home or abroad. Why don’t you two do some research and put togethera proposal to present at next week’s meeting? Then we can take thingsfrom there.SXH & T: OK.Audio ScriptsSXH=Sun Xiaohui; MB=Mr. Brown; TJ=Tracey JordanInterview 1SXH: Mr. Brown, thank you for agreeing to talk to me about your company’s CSR policies.MB: Not at all. As you know, I work for a big international tech company and CSR is part of my responsibility. Our company is committed to CSR, whichimproves the society we all live in.SXH: So your company’s CSR has a global focus?MB: Yes, but we do support some local projects as well. One reason for this is that we have three big factories here and hire about 1,500 local people, so the localcommunities are important to us. We have initiatives for young people, likebuilding sports centers and holding holiday camps. Two years ago we startedto help a local school by providing funds to encourage academicallyoutstanding students.SXH: So most of your local projects focus on young people?MB: Yes, young people are our future, so it’s important to invest in them. We already have evidence that some of our campaigns are having an impact. Thisyear three young people in the school won scholarships to study in Germany.Since your company is small and new, maybe you should focus on one targetedcampaign.Interview 2TJ: Tracey Jordan.SXH: Hello, Ms. Jordan, it’s Sun Xiaohui here.We were in contact before about your company’s CSR strategy.TJ: That’s right, and I think you’ll find our company incredibly interesting. SXH: Why do you say so?TJ: A few years ago we decided to change the direction of our CSR policy, as we felt we were suffering from CSR fatigue. Our employees saw it as a duty andsomething decided by management, so we asked them for their ideas and inputon CSR.SXH: That sounds fantastic.TJ: Well, it certainly had a positive impact. It seems our employees were mostly concerned about environmental issues. So our CSR policies stem from whatwe can do in this respect.SXH: Can you explain what you mean?TJ: Sure. These are just a few of the initiatives: We have a car-sharing scheme, and that means less traffic and pollution; we now recycle most of the officesupplies, and any unused food from the canteen is distributed to a local foodcharity; we’ve also erected solar panels to get clean energy ...。

Unit 2Audio ScriptsYF=Yi Fei; MC=Mr. ClayYF: I saw a job advert for the role of a research intern with a small tech company, and I’m thinking of applying for it. I was wondering if I could ask you forsome advice about what to include in my résumé.MC: Of course, Yi Fei. Let’s start with the basics. You need to include your name, contact details, your education and any achievements like awards or prizes ... YF: OK. I have consistently been in the top 1 percent of my class ... Ah, I also came second in a national science contest last year.MC: Perfect! Oh, don’t forget to include any work experience that you have. YF: Well, I don’t really have any, which is one reason I want this inter nship. MC: All right, but have you done any volunteering?YF: I’ve been a coordinator for exchange students at the university. Also, my friends and I once launched a campaign, appealing to volunteers to tutorstudents in rural areas. Does that count?MC: Yes, that’s excellent. In your résumé, you should outline the responsibilities you had and the skills you gained from your volunteering experiences. Youalso need to try and stand out from other applicants, so it’s a good idea to havea personal statement that includes your career goals and is linked to theposition you are applying for.YF: So I should tailor the résuméto the job, right?MC: Yes, and you could include actual examples from your studies to show you have what the company is looking for.YF: So something like: “At university, I always meet the deadlines for assignments and have used my organizational skills to help other students draw up studyplans.”MC: That’s a good start. Oh, remember to write something about your hobbies if they’re rel evant to the job.YF: Really? But my hobby is gaming.MC: Oh, that’s OK. You could write: “I’m a keen gamer and in order to improve my scores, I often use data analysis of my performance to know how toimprove.” Or something like that.YF: OK, I’ll come up with something. Thanks, that’s really helpful!MC: No problem.Video ScriptsW=Woman; YM=Young manW: Good evening! Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?YM: Of course. My name is William. I’m currently studying accounting at the University of Manchester. I am a good communicator. I have successfully ledseveral projects and fundraising campaigns. Since several of my teammembers were older than me, I had to earn their trust in my ability, which Imanaged with effective communication and collaboration skills. This meansI’m confident about my ability to work with other colleagues and outsideclients. I’m also a quick learner. In fact, my original major was histo ry, but Itransferred to accounting in my first year, and succeeded in catching up withmy classmates within the first months.W: That’s impressive. So why did you decide to change your major?YM: In my first year at university, I volunteered to take part in a business simulation project. I was the team leader and was responsible for deciding our financialstrategy, allocating funds and making sure everything ran smoothly. That mademe realize that I may be well suited to a career in the auditing sector, so Iswitched my major to accounting.W: How did you learn about the position?YM: I’ve been following your company online and saw the advert on your recruitment page.W: Great. So why do you want this position?YM: Well, your company is one of the best in this field, and I really like the corporate culture and values you stand for. Also, the role of an auditor reallyfits my skill set too: I am studying accounting, work well in teams, and alreadyhave some relevant project experience. This position will help me to take thefirst steps toward a career in auditing.W: Can you be more specific about your skills?YM: Yes. Firstly, I have good analytical skills and an eye for detail. I think this is important when analyzing data, looking for patterns and spotting any errors.Secondly, I’m very decisive and not afraid of taking responsibility.W: That’s good. What do you think is the greatest challenge facing our industrytoday?YM: I think the use of big data has created a new landscape for financial reporting. Therefore, it’s important to be modern and future-ready. For example, beingable to transform the audit information into insights to assess customers’ needsand expectations, rather than simply providing financial statements.W: OK. Let me ask finally, do you have any questions for us?YM: Umm, err, no, I don’t think so. Oh, just one. When do I start?。

Unit 5Video ScriptsWH=Wang Hao; C=ChristineWH: Christine, shall we discuss the future-proofing plan now?C: Oh, sure!WH: Did you read the article about the failure of a newspaper publisher?C: Yes, it went bankrupt because it failed to move with the times and follow recent trends. Actually, every industry is shaped and affected by a range of factors, like social, economic and demographic ones.WH: So we should pay special attention to these factors when drafting the plan. C: Yes. Let’s start by conducting a SWOT analysis of our company.WH: A SWOT analysis! Let me try to remember ... S –strengths, uh ... W –weaknesses, O – opportunities, and T – threats.C: That’s right, and it’s a perfect tool for us to use when we analyze the company and put together a plan. Let’s start with the strengths of Flow 2.WH: Flow 2 has lots of strengths. For one thing, it’s simple and easy to use.C: Also it has been around for a long time, so it has strong brand recognition. WH: And a large existing user base!C: All of these is (are) true, but one of the biggest issues is that the number of users is falling dramatically.WH: That’s because we charge a subscription and not all of our content is of high quality.C: Yes, we might need to find ways to encourage uploaders to create quality content, but what are the alternative ways of generating revenue? Do we beginto look for advertisers?WH: No, I don’t think so. Many of our users like the fact th at there are no adverts.Besides, one of our threats is that we are facing a crowded market and we’dhave to fight with our competitors for the same advertisers.C: So we need to focus on the opportunities.WH: I think we could be looking at new markets, rather than worrying too much about just keeping our market share in existing fields. We should look atmarkets that are currently small but are growing.C: Good point. Perhaps new technology can provide an opportunity. We can attract new customers with other mediums, such as live streaming or VRvideos, while maintaining our existing customer base with the current services. WH: Great, so we have a starting point.Audio ScriptsWH=Wang Hao; MA=Ms. Akano; M=MaxInterview 1WH: So, Ms. Akano, can you tell me what happened to your company?MA: It’s a very typical case of being too cautious and slow to adapt to changes in the marketplace. Then I startedworking for a company in Japan, my home country, where the attitude is verydifferent.WH: Can you be more specific?MA: Certainly. It’s a travel company which offers traditional package holidays and bus tours. These kinds of holidays had been shrinking in popularity over anumber of years.WH: People demanded more tailor-made holidays, right?MA: Yeah. The company felt the pressure to follow the trend, but took a conservative approach to it as they always do. Every decision needed to bediscussed and examined ...WH: That sounds a bit time-consuming.MA: Definitely. It’s a very competitive market, so you need to be on to p of your game and be proactive rather than reactive.WH: You mean like setting the trends?MA: Exactly. In the end we failed to react to the new situation and our sales dropped significantly ...Interview 2WH: Max, how has your family restaurant survived for over 150 years?M: It’s really quite simple. We’ve always adapted to the market and focused on one thing at a time. At the outset, the restaurant served fairly traditional food. But as the number of competing restaurants grew, my great grandfatherdecided to transition to fine dining. We’ve focused on a particular kind ofcustomer or client ever since. When I took over six years ago, I saw anopportunity to change our menu and offer international dishes.WH: Wasn’t that risky?M: Yes, but we wanted to differentiate ourselves from our competitors. This was about looking to the future and making sure we would survive. Fortunately, having a small customer base did mean we could survey them and find outtheir preferences and whether the change would prove popular.WH: I guess from everything you’ve said it has been a success.M: Absolutely. We’re also looking at the next transition: the possibility of introducing more vegetarian options ...。

Unit 1Video ScriptsMC=Mr. Clay; YF=Yi Fei; T=TomMC: Come in, ah, I’ve been expecting you.YF: Hi, Mr. Clay.MC: Hello.T: Thanks for seeing us.MC: No problem. So you are here to ask for some advice on career planning, right? T: That’s right.MC: OK. Now the purpose of career planning is to map out how you want to progress your career. So, tell me, what’re your career goals?T: That’s easy. I’m int erested in marketing, so I want to become a CMO.YF: And I want to become a data scientist.MC: Right. Oh, those are certainly very admirable ambitions, but how do you know that those positions are right for you?T: Umm, I’m not sure I understand.MC: Right. Have either of you done a self-analysis?YF: You mean reflecting on our personal strengths and weaknesses?MC: That’s certainly one aspect, but not all by any means. Thinking of our strengths and weaknesses, as you said, is a very good starting point. But it is also vitalthat we are brutally honest with ourselves about our personalities.YF: How can we do that?MC: Well, it can be good to talk to other people who know you to see if they have the same ideas about you. For example, Yi Fei, you may say that you have alot of confidence, but others ...T: May see this as arrogance?MC: Exactly.YF: Oh, I see.T: Why are these things important when we’re planning our career path?MC: Thinking about what knowledge, skills, experiences, and personal characteristics we have can help us to see if we’re a good fit for any particularjob. Also, it’s very important that we know our real interests and workplacepreferences. Once you have finished your self-analysis, then there are threesteps to take. The first step is to identify career goals and jobs that you thinksuit you based on your self-analysis.T: Oh, so we shouldn’t decide what job we want until after we do the self-analysis? MC: You shouldn’t make your career options too narrow at this stag e, as you may want to give yourself several possibilities. Actually, a career aptitude test mightwell throw up some unexpected options for you to consider.YF: Wow! I hadn’t thought of that.MC: The second step is to learn about your preferred career options. Collect information such as industry trend reports or job descriptions. You can alsointerview someone who works in the occupation that interests you.YF: Then we can eliminate the jobs that don’t appeal to us and decide on the best fit!MC: Absolutely. The third and final step is to write your career plan as a guide to reaching your ultimate career goal. You can break it down into long-term andshort-term goals, and then come up with an action plan.YF: I see.T: That’s very helpful. Thank you ve ry much!Audio ScriptsA=Alice; ML=Mr. LiA: Mr. Li, thank you for accepting the interview. You are the founder of YourDream, one of the most popular online travel companies. Was that alwaysyour plan?ML: Actually, yes. I had a plan from the moment I left university that I would have my own travel company within 15 years.A: That’s impressive! So, how did you get started?ML: The first thing I knew I needed to do was work out what I was lacking. So, I did my research and found that I lacked experience in the travel industry andneeded a good network of contacts, management skills, and customer relationsskills.A: That’s a lot to gain! How did you go about getting all of those?ML: Well, I decided the best way for me would be to join a successful travel company and learn as much as I could on the job.A: Did that strategy prove successful?ML: It did! I found a job in a large travel company. There I had access to a lot of in-house management training, and I was always inclined to take advantage ofopportunities to learn something new.A: What kinds of opportunities do you mean?ML: Well, I took part in several notable projects, which enabled me to build my network in the travel industry. I also took the initiative whenever I came acrossproblems.A: What kinds of problems did you face?ML: To give an example, once, many customers were stranded by a typhoon, and I was tasked with finding a hotel where they could wait out the storm.A: I suppose that taught you a valuable lesson about how to manage customers ina crisis.ML: Exactly! But also, as well as that particular skill, I learned more general skills. While working at the company, I chose to enroll on an online MBA program. This prepared me well for starting my own company.A: I see. Finally, I’d like to ask: What advice would you like to give to those who want to start their own business?ML: Aim high, be persistent, and never stop learning. Above all else, learn to cooperate and you’ll go far.。

She was pleased with her green and yellow flowered dress, but felt something wasn't quite right about her hair. She returned home, removing her shoes and leaving them at the door.Moments later, the earthquake struck. Ceilings and walls in the building shook in the deafening noise. Then everything began crashing down. Krimali and her immediate family escaped serious injury but were unable to make their way out. The ceiling of an entire room towered above the only possible escape route. Completely detached on three sides, the huge slab clung to an outside wall on its fourth side. To an observer, it could drop at any moment. People were screaming and didn't know what to do. Krimali decided to act. Carefully she climbed barefoot up and down the debris until she reached a point just beneath the swaying ceiling. About four meters below were uneven pieces of concrete, broken glass and smashed furniture, all mixed with sharp spikes of iron. She knew if she could manage to get down to the ground level, she could make her way to safety. She paused to figure out the best way down. As there wasn't any good place to jump, she just jumped. "I can catch her!" The woman refused. Krimali told the woman to wrap the baby in bed sheets and then toss her down. Crying uncontrollably, the mother wrapped the little girl but still would not part with her baby. As the mother tried to decide what to do, Krimali intently watched the concrete ceiling hanging above her. Finally the mother tossed the baby.Krimali made a clean catch. A bright smile lit up the woman's face. "I'll be back!" Krimali called out, hugging the child to her as she hurriedly picked her way out to where survivors had gathered. She gave up the baby, then asked if any of the men there would come back with her to help others trapped in the building. No one came forward, for they were all afraid of that swaying ceiling. But for Krimali, a small girl of 154 centimeters in height and weighing about 50 kilos, her fears had been lifted by what she had accomplished. On her way back into the ruins, she saw part of a large door. It was extremely heavy but she managed to drag it to the spot just below the hanging ceiling. By placing it on the ruins, she created something like a sliding board. With Krimali coaching her, the baby's mother partly jumped and partly rolled down the board to the ground level. Krimali led her through the debris to her baby. In the hoursthat followed Krimali made countless rescue missions into the building, each time in the shadow of the huge ceiling. Thanks to her courage, about two dozen men, women and children were saved. Questions: 1. Which of the following can be a proper title for the passage? 2. Unit 3Video ScriptsJ=Julia; A=Alice; ZR=Zhou RuiJ:Alice, Zhou Rui, I need to ask the two of you to look into options for a team-building activity for the department. This is a really important assignment aswe have a number of new team members, and I’d like us to all bond quicklyso we can get the most out of everyone.A:Do you have anything specific in mind?J:Not particularly, but we do need something to bring us all together. We also need to realize that the company is going through a period of transition, notjust in terms of the personnel, but also in facing up to new market forces. Thereare a few imminent challenges that we need to face head-on if we are going tosurvive and ultimately flourish.ZR:So, that’s the goal of our team-building activity. Alice, have you ever had any team-building experiences?A:Not in China, but in the U.K. We went paintballing.ZR:And what did you think of it?A:Well, it was fun, but I’m not sure it really worked at bringing us together. It was really competitive.J:It’s absolutely critical whatever activity we do, it needs to be collaborative and bring harmony to the team. We can also mix work and pleasure, so maybe amixture of activities within the day.A:Oh, in the U.K. we like to keep work and pleasure separate!J: In China it’s slightly different. Team-building days are utilized as an integral part of a company’s strategic plan. You can let your hair down, as we say, butwe need to use this event as an opportunity to brainstorm solutions for anyissues that we face.ZR: Last year we did an escape room challenge for one of our team-building days. A: What did you have to do?ZR: We were locked in a room and we had to solve some puzzles. When we solved all the puzzles, we could open the door and escape.A: That sounds fun.ZR: Right, it was a good way to practice our reasoning and problem-solving skills. However, I don’t think it was entirely successful, because some people seemedto take a back seat, and therefore couldn’t benefit from it.J: Yes, it did seem to be dominated by a few members of the team.A: So let’s try and choose something that helps develop different skills or where everyone has to pitch in to be successful.J: Excellent! So I’ll leave it up to the two of you.Audio ScriptsP=Presenter; R=Rachel; F=Franz; GL=Gao LuP:In today’s program, we’re going to talk to a few people about their experiences with team-building events. Our first guest is Rachel. Hi, Rachel! Can you tellus about the event you attended?R:Of course. We went on an outdoor adventure course, but it was a complete failure. Nobody knew what they were supposed to be doing, and two of mycolleagues got minor injuries after falling without the proper safety equipment. It was very poorly organized!P:Oh dear! Safety must be a priority. Let’s talk to Franz from Germany. What’s your experience, Franz?F:Our team-building event was a boat challenge. We had to build a small boat from the basic materials we were given and then get past some obstacles tocross a lake to an island. It was really well-planned with clear objectives, andit was suitable for everyone. It helped improve channels of communication, and when we got back to the office, you really noticed the difference. I’ddefinitely advocate it.P:That sounds better. Clearly, organization is important. Let’s talk to another guest, Gao Lu from China.GL:My company decided on a presentation activity. We were divided into teams and had to come up with an idea to pitch to a panel of judges and try to wintheir investment. It was an appropriate activity, because we are often requiredto present ideas to clients; so this was good practice and good fun. I’m prettysure it was successful, as the company profits went up afterward. The onlything I’d suggest is to actually follow up some of the ideas, as some of themwere fantastic!P: So it seems that team-building activities work best when they are relevant to your everyday work. As we can see, there are lots of activities to choose from, and while not all team-building events are successful, many are. When you’redeciding what to do, there are a few factors to consider so as not to spoil the day: What does the company hope to get out of the event? Is it professionally organized? How will you measure if it has been successful?。

Part 1
(It happened twenty years ago.In the letter she said she was spending the morning at the Luxembourg and would I give her a little luncheon at Foyot’s afterwards.I was too young to have learned to say no to a woman. So,I agreed to her suggestion.)
(I was startled when the bill of fare was brought, for the prices were a great deal higher than I had anticipated. But she reassured me.)
W:I never eat anything for luncheon.
M:Oh,don’t say that.
Part 2
W:I never eat more than one thing.I think people eat far too much nowadays.A little fish, perhaps.I wonder if they have any salmon.
(I think it was early in the year for salmon and it was not on the bill of fare.)
M:Waiter.
W:Yes,Mr.
M:Do you have the salmon?
WA:Yes,a beautiful salmon had just come in,it was the first we had had. M:Take a salmon for the lady please.
WA:Ms.Do you have something while it was being cooked?
W:No,I never eat more than one thing.Unless you have a little caviare.I never mind caviare.
(My heart sank a little,I could not afford caviare, but I could not very well tell her that.)
M:Please give the Ms.caviare and give me a mutton chop.
WA:Yes,Mr.
W:I think you are unwise to eat meat.I don’t know how you can expect to work after eating heavy things like chops.I don’t believe in overloading my stomach.
(Then came the question of drink.)
W:I never drink anything for luncheon.
M:Neither do I.
W:Except white wine. These French white wines are so light and wonderful for the digestion.
M:What would you like?
W:My doctor won’t let me drink anything but champagne.
(I fancy I turner a trifle pale.)
M:Please give us half a bottle champagne,my doctor had absolutely forbidden me to drink champagne.
WA:Mr.What are you going to drink?
M:Water.
(When she is eating the caviare and the salmon,i wondered what the bill would come to.I listened to she talked gaily of art and literature and music.)
W:I see that you’re in the habit of eating a heavy luncheon.I’m sure it’s a mistake. Why don’t you follow my example and just eat one thing?I’m sure you’d feel ever much better for it.
M:I am only going to eat one thing.
WA:Do you need some more?
W:No,no,I never eat anything for luncheon.Just a bite,as an excuse for conversation.Unless they had some of those giant asparagus.I should be sorry to leave Paris without having some of them.
(My heart sank.I had seen them in the shops, they were horribly expensive.) M:Madame wants to know if you have any of those giant asparagus. WA:Of course. We have some so large,so splendid,so tender,it was a marvel. W:I’m not in the least hungry, but if you insist I don’t mind having some asparagus.
M:Order some of those asparagus please.
WA:OK,Mr.Wait for a moment.
W:Aren’t you going to have any?
M:No,I never eat asparagus.
W:Oh,you eat so many meat.
(When waiting for the asparagus to be cooked.Panic seized me.It was not a question now how much money I should have left over for the rest of the month, but whether I had enough to pay the bill, what should I do.) (The asparagus appeared. They are enormous, juicy, and appetising. At last she finished.)
M:Coffee?
W:Yes,just an ice-cream and coffee.
(I was past caring now.)
M:Give me a cup of coffee, and a cup of coffee and an ice cream to the lady.
WA:OK,Mr.
M:Are you still hungry?
W:Oh,no,I’m not hungry;you see,I don’t eat luncheon.I have a cup of coffee in the morning and then dinner, but I never eat more than one thing for luncheon.I was speaking for you.
M:Oh,I see.
(Then the terrible thing happened.)
W:You see, you’re filled your stomach with a lot of meat, and you can’t eat any more. But I’ve just had a snack and I shall enjoy a peach. Part 3
(The bill came, when I paid it I found that I had only money for this and than I left 3 francs to the waiter. After that ,we walked out of the restaurant together.)
W:follow my example, and never eat more than one thing for luncheon. M:I will do better than that,i will eat nothing for dinner tonight.
W:Humorist! You are quite a humorist!
(But I have had my revenge at last,I do not believe that i am a vindictive man,but when the immortal gods take a hand in the matter it is pardonable to observe the result with complacency.Today she weights twenty-one stone.)。
