In this project, we will explore the ways , the frequency, the effects and the difficulties of their English learning. we use the interviewing method to talk about the English level of the graduate students with their teachers and the English learning ecperience with some graduate students.We use the questionnaire method to show enough questions that we want to know to the graduate students.We use the random method to chose the interviewed graduate students and the teachers and chose a group of graduate students for three years to hand out our questionnaires for this investigation.By such a study, we can give insights into the graduate students’ state and level of English learning. Finally, analysis of the dates indicates that most of the graduate students for 3 year have learned English about 10 years.By learning English,they want to get high grade,gain more certificates and find good jobs in the future.They also hope that their listening skill and oral English can be improved greatly.Survey Report on English Teaching in Qingdao University1 IntroductionThere is no doubt that English is one of the world's most widely used languages. People use a language in one of three ways: as a native language, as a second language, or as a foreign language. English is spoken as a native language by over three hundreds million people in the United States, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, some caribbean countries and South Africa. As a second language, English is often necessary for official business, education, information and other activities in many countries.English has in fact become the language of international cooperation is science and technology. The most advanced resuits in space, nuclear and computer research are published in it. A scientist who speaks and writes English is in closer touch with the scientists in other countries than one who doesn't.English is one of the main international language in the world and is also the most widely used language all over the world.As China is opening to the outside world,learning English is becoming more and more important.As graduate students, mastering English well is beneficial for both the employment and the communication in the daily life. For graduate students, there is English lessons to learn in the first year but no lessons in the second and third year. They need to learn English by themselves in most of time. Therefore, we chose the topic to carry on the research.2 Body2.1 Survey MethodologyIn this report, primary data collection methods are employed in order to gain actual information of students.It includes fore parts:Questionnaire survey,Sample selection and data collection,Research Ethics and Data analysis.In this study, questionnaire survey aims to identify students’ actual perspectives and attitudes towards English learning.The second step is used to send collection questionnaires.Permission has been given in writing by the company to undertake this research.The final step is to do data analysis. In terms of the received data, some statistic analysis techniques are used toanalyze the received data, such as descriptive statistic analysis, confirmation factor analysis, correlation analysis and regression analysis.2.2 Results and AnalysisChart 1 Chart 2From chart 1,We have 100 people to join this research proposal.There are 4 percent of them learning English for four to seven years and twenty nine percent of them learning for eight to ten years.The most learn it for eleven years,account for 67 percent.We can see that most people study English for a long time,but what about their English abilities?Maybe they are interested in English.They don’t try their best to learn it well.What we should do is to learn English efficiently and speak it frequently.From chart 2,we can see that no one thought studying English frequently is nothing important.However,,nearly seven percent people thought it in marginal importance.There are 41 percent people think it quite important and 52 percent think it very important.It is well known that no pains no gains.If we want to learn English well,we must make the effort to study it well.Chart 3 Chart 4From chart 3,how often do you learn English per week?As the research said that there are 14 percent people learning English on times.There are 67 percent people learning English one to three times in a week.About 17 percent people learn four to six times per week.Only 2 percent people learn it for seven times.As far as we are concerned,learning English frequently is the most effective ways to study it well.As a result,we should improve the interesting of learning English,and spend enough time to study it.From chart 4,for the question that how long you study English on average every day, about 55 percent of people study English less than half hour every day, about 42 percent study more than one hour but no more than 2 hours and only 3 percent of persons spend more than 2 hours on learning English every day. That is to say, only 3 among 100 people who we have investgated use more time on English learning. From the data, we can get the conclusion that most of people do not spend too much time on English learning and they still have not paid enough attention to learn English.Chart 5From chart 5, for the question that what your aim to study English is, about 45 percent of people want to get a better grade, about 17 percent eager to know more foreign culture, about 36 percent want to learn that because of the life needs, about 34 percent of persons are willing to get certain certificates, about 8 percent plan to go abroad, about 53 percent want to get a better job and only 8 percent have not thought clearly about this thing.From the data, we can get the conclusion that the reasons for studying English vary from one by one, most of people focus on English learning for a better grade or a better job and we can also see from another perspective that learning English does bringbenefits to us.Chart 6From chart 6,for the question that which way can inspire your interest in learning English from the follow ways: English corner, English classes, English performances and English publications. About 23 percent of people choose the first way, about 21 percent choose the second one, about 50 percent choose the third one and the rest choose the last one. From those data, we can get the conclusion that most of people like to watch the English performances. And we can tell this conclusion to our English teachers and we are sure that our English classes will be more interesting.Chart 7From chart7,what do you do every day in English learning? From the survey, it can be shown that the majority of the respondents chose to watch English movies, they deem that watching English movies can not only have a good time, but also improve their oral English. In order to enlarge the vocabulary, about half of the respondents recites words every day, but I think that we should read more English essays rather than only recite words. What's more, some respondents do some conventional English learning, such as, learning the English textbook, Listening English radio and doing English excises.Chart 8From chart 8,in order to effectively improve students' interest in learning English, we can carry out some activities in our class. Sixty one percent of the respondents think that communicate with foreign teachers is the best way to attract our interest, so our foreign teacher should take more time to communicate with us, and our classmates should accept every chance to talk with foreign teachers. Half of the respondents thinks that we should take some English games and sing more English songs, even we can perform some English dramas. In my opinion, we can learn more study from games, so we should do more those activities. What's more, some respondents deem that English Debates, English learning exchanges and English newspapers can also improve our interest.Chart9From chart 9,with the development of Internet, seventy five percent of the respondents will use online search when asked if you come across English problem what would you do. I deem this is not a good way, because this willaggravate the dependency on online search, and we can't think it ourselves. Luckily, eighteen percents of the respondents chose to check the materials, but only five percents of the respondents chose to consult the English teacher. I think that we should check the English textbook firstly, then ask help from English teachers when we come across problems. What's more, there are little people will give it up when they come across problem.Chart 10From chart 10,100 people answered this question, 23% of them chose the "read aloud, like fun of speaking English".39% of the total chose "a lot of reading, to get knowledge of English from reading" .28% of them chose "often heard, to get knowledge of English by listening to".Only 10% of the total proportion chose "have their own unique way of learning English ".As we can see from the proportion, reading and listening to English are majority, which coincides with the Chinese examination system. Chinese exam includes listening and reading, but few people can communicate with foreigners after ten years of learning ,which illustrates that Chinese education system has some problem.Chart 11From chart 11,100 people answered this question, 74 people chose the "hearing", 81 people chose the "spoken", 47 people chose to "read", 44 people chose the "writing", with 46 passengers select the "translation and translation skills", 36 people chose "English", there are six people chose "other". Majority of them select "listening" and "spoken", neither of them are in oral exam. However,the ability of communicating with people requires both of them. It shows that we should strengthen the investment in these two areas. Few people select "English" shows rare use of professional English in their daily lives ,it also illustrate that many people feel no need strengthening it.Chart 12From chart 12,100 people answered this question, 37 of them chose "lack of proper methods or techniques," 12 people chose the "standard of teaching andteaching methods of English teacher", 30 people chose "have fear of hardship ",55 people chose"lack of attention",53 people chose " no language environment".Majority of them chose the 'own insufficient attention "and" no language environment ", as we all know, if a family has a parent speaking a foreign language,naturally,the child would speak two languages, which shows a good language environment for learning English is helpful. Only few people select “English teacher with low level” , indicating that the level of our English teacher is still high. “Fear of hardship”and “without correct way of learning English” also affect learning English.Chart 13From chart 13, This question is very interesting. We want to see what kind of English classroom activities students like? we can see that only 25% of the participants like regular classroom activities. This may demonstrate that most college students are like to have a more unconventional classroom activities.Such like english speech. More than half of the participants think that role play and group discussion or debate are interesting english classroom activities. The results of this investigation is good for our teacher arrange their course contents.Chart 14From chart 14, the results reflect the relationship between our teacher’s requirements and our english study.Only 9% believe that they can reach the teacher's requirements absolutely. More than 79% of the participants think that they can not meet the requirements of their teacher. This means that students need more efforts to meet the requirements. Compared with the chart 3, we can come to the conclusion that is more interesting. 67% of the participants learn English 1 to 3 times a week. The results of the two chart are counterpart. This suggests that the frequency of study influence our learning effects. So wecan learn by raising the frequency to achieve better resultsConclusions and SuggestionsAnalysis of the dates indicates that most of the graduate students for 3 year have learned English about 10 years.By learning English,they want to get high grade,gain more certificates and find good jobs in the future.They also hope that their listening skill and oral English can be improved greatly.On the other hand,almost everyone of them think that it is very important to add the frequency of English learning.But,few of them will try to find chances to learn English every week.What they may do are to remember words and to read their text books.So they can not meet the requirement of their teachers completely and perfectly.Here are some suggestions.Because a lot of students complain that the atmosphere around them is bad to learning English.So a series of activities should be held to arouse our students’interest of learning English.For example,performance in English,English play and recital contest are good ways.When faced with difficult problems,students can ask their teachers for help or they can find answers from the Internet.Only in this way,can the graduate students learn English well and meet the requirement of their teachers.RecommendationsThrough the questionnaire survey,we have known that most people have no effectiveway to learn English. There is no doubt that learning more English can lead us to high educational level ,get more chances to go abroad,gain more certificates and find good jobs in the future.There are some recommendations for graduate students :①As far as we are concerned,learning English frequently is the most effective ways to study it well.As a result,we should improve the interesting of learning English,and spend enough time to study it.②We can learn more study from games, so we should do more those activities. What's more, some respondents deem that English Debates, English learning exchanges and English newspapers can also improve our interest.③Because a lot of students complain that the atmosphere around them is bad to learning English.So a series of activities should be held to arouse our students’interest of learning English.For example,performance in English,English play and recital contest are good ways.④When faced with difficult problems,students can ask their teachers for help or they can find answers from the Internet.Only in this way,can the graduate students learn English well and meet the requirement of their teachers.AcknowledgementSo far, the research on the real state of English learning of the graduate students for three years has been finished in general.we would like to express our gratitude to all those who helped us during the English learning report.First of all, We gratefully acknowledge the help of your supervisor, Mr. Guo linxiang, who has offered us valuable suggestions and skills to finish the long term work in the academic studies.
