大学英语(一)复习题Directions: There are six passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice.Passage 1Who coined the term personal computer? The Oxford English Dictionary says Byte magazine used it first, in its May 1976 issue. But Yale Law School librarian Fred Shapiro decided to do some digging on his own--with help from JSTOR, an online electronic database for academic (学术的) journals. JSTOR's arts and sciences archive (档案) offers scans of 5 million pages from 117 journals, some dating back 150 years. Using character-recognition software, JSTOR creates searchable files for each document (文件), allowing full-text searches across 15 academic fields.(S3) While searching for the origin of personal computer, Shapiro uncovered several competing claims. Stewart Brand, founder of Whole Earth Catalog, says on his Web site that he first referred to a "personal computer" in a 1974 book; and GUI pioneer Alan Kay is said to have used the term in a paper published in 1972.But a search on JSTOR's general science archive turned up what Shapiro says is the earliest recorded use of personal computer, in the October 4, 1968, issue of Science. The issue contains a Hewlett-Packard advertisement for its new HP 9100A. "The new Hewlett-Packard 9100A personal computer," the advertisement says, is "ready, willing and able …to relieve you of waiting to get on the big computer." The $4,900 device -- a desktop scientific calculator equipped with magnetic cards-doesn't seem like much of a computer nowadays. And at 40 pounds, it wasn't very personal, either. But according to Shapiro, it was the first device to be called a personal computer.1. The term "personal computer" first appeared ________.A.in Byte magazineB.in a Hewlett-Packard ad in ScienceC.in a 1974 bookD.in a paper published by Alan Kay2. What is JSTOR?A.It is an online database.B.It is an academic journal.C.It is a kind of computer software.D.It is a research organization.3. Shapiro succeeded in his search for the origin of the term personal computer by ________. A.looking into the Oxford English DictionaryB.digging into magazines that are more than 150 years oldC.scanning JSTOR's general science archive on lineD.ocusing on academic journals such as Science4. With a HP 9100A, according to the Hewlett-Packard advertisement, you ________.A.can easily get on the big computer.B.don't have to get on the big computerC.can save a lot of money.D.will be willing and ready to do scientific work5. What do we learn from the passage about the first device that was called a personal computer? A.It looked very different from the PC we know today.B.It was small, light and easy to carry around.C.It was as efficient as a big computer.D.It relieved people of a great deal of tedious workPassage2There are several ways of testing the intelligence (智力) of animals. In one test, some scientists put three plates on the table. While the animal watched, they put food under one of the plates. Then they took the animal away. Some time later, they brought it back to see if it remembered which plate had the food. The idea is to find out how long an animal’s memory can last. The scientists would try showing the plate to the animal one hour later, or two hours later, or even a full day later. They found out that chimpanzees and elephants have the best memory, and re-able to remember the correct plate for at least twenty hours. No other animal is close. Dogs come next, but they can only remember for nine hours. The scientists made a large maze (迷宫) and ran the chimpanzees and elephants through it. The maze was very difficult with many dead ends. It took the chimpanzees ten minutes to find their way out. The elephants needed half an hour. The test showed that chimpanzees are the cleverest animals. From this and other tests the scientists found out an animal’s intelligence depends on the size of its brain to the size of its body. The elephant’s brain is ten pounds, but this is only 1/600 of its body. A chimpanzee’s brain is about one pound, and it’s 1/120 of its body. So the chimpanzee has five times as much brain as the elephant – more brain.6. The first test was made to tes t an animal’s _________.A. noseB. memoryC. eyesD. patience7. This passage tells us that elephants _________.A. are the cleverest animalsB. are cleverer than chimpanzeesC. have worse memories than dogsD. are less clever than chimpanzees8. Which of the following is TRUE?A. Scientists have found out the secret of the intelligence of animals.B. Dogs are less useful than elephants.C. Chimpanzees and elephants have better memories than people.D. The h eavier an animal’s brains is, the cleverer it is.9. If an animal’s body is 2100poudns, and it has a 3 – pound brain, it is _________.A. as clever as a chimpanzeeB. cleverer than an elephantC. less clever than an elephantD. as clever as an elephant10. Which is the best title of this passage?A. Want to know about the intelligence of animalsB. The chimpanzee’s brainC. The elephant’s memoryD. Where to test animals’ memoryPassage 3Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:This story began about 10 years ago. I was coming out of a very bad marriage. I figured that he was simply being nice to me because I had bought him a drink, but the very next day he called and told me that he could not stop thinking about me and that he wanted to meet my kids too.About 3 months later, my divorce was final and Clint sat my boys down and asked them if it was all right with them if he asked me to marry him because he could not imagine life without the three of us anymore. I was so touched that he went to my boys and asked for their approval(同意) because they were the "men of the house" at the ripe old ages of 2 and 4. But since childhood, she had been dreaming of working closely with animals in Africa. "All through my childhood people said you can't go to Africa. You're a girl," Goodall says. But my mother used to say, if you really want to, there's nothing you can't do."In 1957, the 26-year-old Goodall journeyed to Kenya to work as a secretary. She also arranged to meet the famous scientist Louis Leakey, who was so impressed by her enthusiasm that he hired her as his assistant. She went with him on many trips to the African jungle(丛林) and in 1960 Leakey sent Goodall to live among chimpanzees in a remote animal preserve(禁猎地), recording the animals' behavior and interactions. For three months Goodall made little progress. But she says, "I never came close to giving up." Her breakthrough came one day when she saw a male chimpanzee stick a blade of grass into a termite(白蚁) hill, then put the grass in his mouth. Afterward she approached the hill and did the same. Pulling the grass out, she discovered dozens of termites clinging to it. The discovery--that some animals use tools--was unknown to most scientists at the time.Goodall saw chimpanzees exhibit human-like emotions, such as jealousy and love. But she also discovered they were capable of violent attacks against each other.Goodall received her Ph.D. in the study of animal behavior at England's Cambridge University. Now she travels around the globe raising money to preserve wildlife. "I love being in the forest with the chimps," she says. "I'd much rather be there than traveling around from city to city."16. I'll be back in a second," Joy Warren said to her three-year-old son Stephen, who was sitting in the back of the Buick. She didn't like leaving the children alone in the car, but the baby was sleeping soundly. And it would only be a moment. She had hardly walked 40 yards when she saw the car moving. It headed straight towards the river. Unable to swim, Joy shouted, "My babies are in that car!"Daniel Whitehead, a 17-year-old student, was walking by the river when the Buick crashed into the water just yards ahead. Without thinking, Daniel jumped in. Though a competitive swimmer, he was shocked by the icy chill. Two minutes earlier, Skip Womack had pulled to a halt as the Buick ran in front of him. Now seeing it hit the water and hearing Joy's cries, Skip got out of his truck and jumped into the water. He had only one thought: If I don't get them out, they'll drown.Daniel reached the car and grabbed a door handle. But the water was only four inches beneath the window, and the door wouldn't open. With one powerful punch, Daniel and Skip broke a window. Daniel reached inside and lifted Stephen out. He placed him on his back and set out for shore. At the same time, Skip squeezed himself through the window. He managed to free Esther from beneath her seat belt. After he got out of the car with the baby, he held her over the water and swam toward the shore. All this took place just seconds before the Buick disappeared beneath the water.Later, driving home, Skip thought of his wife and children--how close he'd come to leaving them behind. I pass small bands of once-and-future students on my way to work these summer mornings. These kids are not old enough for jobs. Nor are they rich enough for camp. They are school children without school. The calendar(年历) called the school year ran out on them a few weeks ago. Once looked after by teachers and headmasters, they now appear to be in "self care."For much of our history, however, Americans framed the school year around the needs of work and family. In 19th-century cities, schools were open seven or eight hours a day, 11 months a year. In rural America, the year was arranged around the growing seasons. Now, only 3 percent of families follow the agricultural model, but nearly all schools are scheduled as if our children went home early to milk cows and took months off to work the crops. Now, three-quarters of the mothers of school-age children work, but the calendar is written as if they were home waiting for the school bus.The six-hour day, the 180-day school year is regarded as somehow sacred(神圣的). But when parents work an eight-hour day and a 240-day year, it means something different. It means that many kids go home to empty houses. It means that, in the summer, they hang out."We have a huge mismatch between the school calendar and the realities of family life," says educator Dr. Ernest Boyer.Dr. Boyer is one of many who believe that a radical revision of the school calendar is necessary. "School, whether we like it or not, is custodial(监管的) and educational. It always has been."26. Twenty-eight-year-old Marissa Parry was returning home from her job as manager of a bar. She parked her car in a lot next to the local railroad station, locked the door, and started to walk the 100 feet to the entrance of her apartment. The entrance to the apartment is at the rear of the building as the front of the building contains small stores. The neighborhood was covered in a sleeping darkness.Miss Parry noticed a man at the far end of the lot, near a seven-storey apartment house. She halted, then, nervously, she headed up the street, where there is a police call box. She got as far as a street l ight in front of a bookshop, before the man grabbed her. She screamed, “Oh, my God, he stabbed me! Please help me!”. Lights went on in the ten-storey apartment house across the street. Windows were opened and voices spoke in the early-morning stillness. From one the upper windows in the apartment house, a man called down: “Let the girl alone!” The man looked up at him, shrugged(耸肩), and walked down the street toward a white car. Miss Parry struggled to her feet.Lights went on. The man returned to Miss Parry, stabbed her again. Miss Parry called out, “I‟m dying! I‟m dying!” windows were open again and lights went on in many ap artments. The man got into the car and drove away. Miss Parry staggered to her feet, and at the time a city bus passed. The man returned. By then, Miss Parry had crawled(爬行) to the back of the building where doors to the apartment house held out hope for afety. The killer found her at the second door, lying on the floor at the foot of the stairs. He stabbed her again—killing her.Fifteen minutes later, the police received their first call, from a man who was a neighbor of Miss Parry. In two minutes they were at the scene. The neighbor, a 70-year-old woman, and another woman were the only persons on the street. Nobody else came forward. The man explained that he had called the police after much thought. He had phoned a friend for advice and then he had gon e to the apartment of the elderly woman to get her to make the call. “I didn‟t want to get involved,” he told the police.1. When happen the murdering in proper neighborhood? ________A. at duskB. at noonC. at nightD. at dawn2. Why did Miss Parry head up the street when she found a man at the far end of the lot? ________A. calling the policeB. asking the help from the familyC. asking the help from the neighborsD. running away the scene3. How many times did the man stab Miss Parry throughout the accident? ________A. twoB. threeC. fourD. five5. The author expresses the emotion of ________ to the killing case.A. sympathyB. indignationC. curiosityD. indifferencePassage BI‟m usually fairly skeptical about any research that concludes that people are either happier or unhappier or more or less certain of themselves than they were 50 years ago. While any of these statements might be true, they are practically impossible to prove scientifically. Still, I was struck by a report which concluded that today‟s children are significantly mor e anxious than children in the 1950s. In fact, the analysis showed, normal children ages 9 to 17 exhibit a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.Why are America‟s kids so stressed? The report cites two main causes: increasing physical isolation—brought on by high divorce rates and less involvement in community, among other things—and a growing perception that the world is a more dangerous place.Given that we can‟t turn the clock back, adults can still do plenty to help the next generation cope. At the top of the list is nurturing (培育) a better appreciation of the limits of individualism. No child is an island. Strengthening social ties helps build communities and protect individuals against stress. To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs and computers. Your family will thank you later. They will have more time for face-to-face relationships, and they will get more sleep.Limit the amount of virtual (虚拟的) violence your children are exposed to. It‟s not just video games and movies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news.Keep your expectations for your children reasonable. Many highly successful people never attended Harvard or Yale.Make exercise part of your daily routine. It will help you cope with your own anxieties and provide a good model for your kids. Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable. But it doesn‟t have to ruin your life.6. The author thinks that the conclusions of any research about people‟s state of mind are ________.A. surprisingB. confusionC. illogicalD. questionable7. What does the author mean when he says, “we can‟t turn the clock back” (Line 1, Para. 3)?A. It‟s impossible to slow down the pace of change.B. The social reality children are facing cannot be changed.C. Lessons learned from the past should not be forgotten.D. It‟s impossible to forget the past.8. According to an analysis, compared with normal children today, children treated as mentally ill50 years ago ________.A. were less isolated physicallyB. were probably less self-centeredC. probably suffered less from anxietyD. were considered less individualistic9. The first and most important thing parents should do to help their children is ________.A. to provide them with a safer environmentB. to lower their expectations for themC. to get them more involved sociallyD. to set a good model for them to follow10. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?A. Anxiety, though unavoidable, can be coped with.B. Children‟s anxiety has been enormously exaggerated.C. Children‟s anxiety can be eliminated with more parental care.D. Anxiety, if properly controlled, may help children become mature.Passage CIt was clearly the headmaster himself that opened the door. He was short and fat, with a sandy-colored moustache, a wrinkled forehead and hardly any hair. He looked at me with an air of surpris ed disapproval, as a colonel might look at a private whose bootlaces were undone. …Ah, yes. You‟d better come inside,‟ he grunted. The narrow, sunless hall smelled unpleasantly of stale cabbage; the walls were dirty with ink marks; it was all silent. …You‟d better sit down,‟ he said, and proceeded to ask me a number of questions: what subjects I had taken in my General School Certificate; how old I was; what games I played; then fixing me suddenly with his bloodshot eyes, he asked me whether I thought games were a vital part of a boy‟s education. I mumble something about not attaching too much importance to them. He grunted. I had said the wrong thing. The headmaster and I obviously had very little in common. The school was made up of one class of twenty-four boys, ranging in age from seven to thirteen. I should have to teach all subjects except art, which he taught himself. Football and cricket were played in the Park, a mile away on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. The teaching set up filled me with fear. I should have to divide the class into three groups and teach them in turn at three different levels; and I was dismayed at the thought of teaching algebra and geometry — two subjects at which I had been completely incompetent at school. Worse perhaps was the idea of Saturday afternoon cricket; most of my friends would be enjoying leisure at that time.I said shyly, …What would my salary be?‟ …Twelve pounds a week plus lunch.‟ Before I could protest, he got to his feet. He said, …Now, you‟d better meet my wife. She is the one who really runs the school.‟ This was the last straw. I was very young: the prospect of working under a woman constituted the ultimate indignity.11. The headmaster looked at the author disapprovingly ________ .A. because the latter had left his bootlaces undoneB. because the latter looked too nervousC. because the latter didn‟t show due respectD. as an officer look at a carelessly dressed soldier12. After the author was asked a number of questions, he concluded that the headmaster _______ .A. didn‟t like to play the same gamesB. believed the games was very key to a boy‟s educationC. attached great importance to artD. was a game fan13. The idea of Saturday afternoon cricket was even more discouraging because ________ .A. he had to walk a mile to get to the cricket fieldB. he wasn‟t good at playing cricketC. most of his friends would be free at that timeD. he didn‟t like to play little boys in public14. If the author had had a chance, he would have protested _________ .A. at the term offered by the headmasterB. about meeting the headmaster‟s wifeC. against having lunch at schoolD. about playing cricket on weekends15. We can infer that the author ________ at the end of the story.A. coul dn‟t decide whether he should accept the job or notB. had no choice but to accept itC. refused the job though he needed itD. accepted the job though he didn‟t like it 1-5 D C BBB 6-10 D B C C A 11-15 D B C A CⅣ. The results show that the principal problems are caused by cultural differences. For example, one study, in which members of ten nationalities attended regular meetings together, revealed that the French could not understand the practical British attitude to conducting business, which they thought indicated a lack of preparation. On the other hand, the Americans found it difficult to accept shaking hands with the French every morning, which they saw as a sign of a more formal relationship. It is suggested that the successful multinational team should be composed of managers who have the right profile in terms of attitude and experience and who suit the rule that’differences’ should be accepted.与文中意思相符的在括号中写―T‖,不相符的在括号中写―F‖()1. 大学英语(一)复习题PartⅠReading ComprehensionDirections: In this part there are four passages followed by questions, each with four suggested answers. Choose the ONE you think is the best answer.Passage OneListening to music while you drive can improve your speed and ability to get away from accidents, according to Australian psychologists (心理学家).But turning your car radio up to full volume could probably make you end up in an accident. The performance of difficult tasks can be affected if people are subjected to loud noise. The experience of pulling up at traffic lights alongside care with loud music made some psychologists in the University of Sydney look into whether loud music has something to do with driving. The psychologists invited 60 men and women aged between 20 and 28 as subjects and tested them on almost the same driving tasks under three noise conditions:silence, rock music played at a gentle 55 decibels (分贝), and the same music at 85 decibels. For l0 minutes the subjects sat in front of a screen operating a simple machine like a car. They had to track a moving disk on screen, respond to traffic signals changing color, and brake (刹车) in response to arrows that appeared without warning. On the tracking task, there was no difference in performance under the three noise conditions. But under both the loud and quiet music conditions, the performers “braked” at a red light about 50 milliseconds sooner than they did when there was no rock music at all. That could mean a reduction in braking distance of a couple of meters actually, the difference between life and death for a pedestrian(行人).When it came to the arrows that appeared across the visual field, the psychologists found that when the music was quiet, people responded faster to objects in their central field of sight by about 50 milliseconds. For the people listening at 85 decibels, response times dropped by a further 50 milliseconds ----- a whole tenth of second faster than those “driving” with no music.“But there’s a trade-off,” the psychologists told th e European Congress of Psychology.“They lose the ability to look around the whole situation effectively.” In responding to objects that suddenly appeared, people subjected to 85-decibel rock music were around 100 milliseconds slower than both the other groups.Since some accidents --- such as children running into the road --- take place without any notice, drivers listening to loud music must be less safe as a result. 1.Which of the following is the best way to make driving safer?A.Loud music.B.Quiet music.C.Silence.D.Heavy metal music.2.What does the phrase “pulling up” in paragraph two mean?A.Stopping.B.Giving somebody a lift.C.Putting up with.D.Driving.3.Where did the researchers do the experiment?A.At crossroads.B.At a police traffic station.C.In a crowded street.D.Under the same conditions as those of the streets.4.Which of the following didn't help the performers to “brake” sooner at red lights? A.Silence.B.Loud music.C.Quiet music.D.Rock music.5.Which of the following is NOT true of loud music?A.It helped the performers to brake sooner at red lights.B.It helped the performers to be more careful.C.It helped the performers to respond faster to objects suddenly stepping in the way.D.It can do more good than harm to drivers.Passage TwoDrunken driving—sometimes called America’s socially accepted form of murder—has become a national epidemic(流行病). Every hour of every day about three Americans on average are killed by drunken drivers, adding up to an incredible 250,000 over the past ten years. A drunken driver is usually referred to as one with 0.10-blood alcohol content or roughly three beer glasses of wine or shots of whisky drunk within two hours. Heavy drinking used to be an acceptable part of the American manly image and judges were lenient in most courts, but the drunken killing has recently caused so many well-publicized tragedies, especially concerning young children, that public opinion is no longer so tolerant(忍受).Twenty states have raised the legal drinking age to 21, reversing a trend(逆转潮流)in the 1960s to reduce it to 18. After New Jersey lowered it to 18, the number of people killed by 18-20-year-old drivers more than doubled, so the state recently upped it back to 21. Reformers, however, fear raising the drinking age will have little effect unless accompanied by educational programs to help young people to develop “responsible attitudes” about drinking and teach them to resist peer pressure to drink.Though new laws have led to increased arrests and tests in many areas already, to a marked drop in accidents, some states are also punishing bars for serving customers too many drinks. A bar in Massachusetts was fined for serving six or more double brandies to a customer who was “obviously drunk” and later drove off the road, killing a nine-year-old boy.As the accidents continue to occur daily in every state, some Americans are even beginning to speak well of the 13 years national prohibition(禁令)of alcohol that began in 1919, which President Hoover called the “noble experiment”. They forgot that legal prohibition didn’t stop drinking, but encouraged political corruption(腐败)and organized crime. As with the booming drug trade generally, there is no easy solution.6. It can be inferred from the passage that drunken driving has become a major problem in the United States because .A. most Americans like drinkingB. heavy drinking is hard to avoidC. many Americans are killed by traffic accidentsD. Americans are not shocked by traffic accidents7. What can be inferred from the fact of the traffic accidents in New Jersey?A. Young drivers were usually bad.B. The legal drinking age should be raised.C. Some drivers didn’t surprise the legal drinking age.D. Drivers should not be allowed to drink.8. The underlined word “lenient” in the first paragraph means .A. mercifulB. cruelC. seriousD. determined9. As regards drunken driving, public opinion has changed because .A. judges are no longer lenientB. new laws are introduced in some statesC. drivers do not appreciate their manly imageD. the problem has attracted public attention10. Which of the following statements best shows the writer’s opinion of drunken driving?A. It is difficult to solve this problem.B. It may lead to organized crime.C. The new laws can stop heavy drinkingD. There should be no bars to serve drinks.Passage ThreeBecket not only traveled light, he lived light. In all the world he owned just the clothes he stood up in, a full suitcase and a bank account. Arriving anywhere with these possessions, he might just as easily put up for a month or a year as for a single night. For long stays, not less than a month, he might take a furnished flat, sometimes even a house. But whatever the length, he rarely needed anything he did not have with him. He was, he liked to think, a self-contained person. Becket had one occasional anxiety, the suspicion that he owned more than that would fit comfortably into the case. The feeling, when it came, was the signal for him to throw something away or just leave it lying about. This was the automatic fate of his worn-out clothes for example. Having no use for choice or variety, he kept just a raincoat, a suit, a pair of shoes and a few shirts, socks and so on; no more in the clothing line. He bought and read many books, and left them wherever he happened to be sitting when he finished them. They quickly found new owners. Becket was a professional traveler, interested and interesting. He liked to get the feeling of a place by living in it, reading its newspapers, watching its TV, discussing its affairs. Though Becket's health gave him no cause for alarm, he made a point of seeing a doctor as soon as he arrived anywhere. "A doctor knows a place and its people better than anyone", he used to say. He never went to see a doctor; he always sent for one; that, he found, was the quickest way to confidences, which came out freely as soon as he mentioned that he was a writer. Becket was an artist as well. He painted pictures of his places and, when he had gathered enough information, he wrote about them. He sold his work, through an agent, to newspapers and magazines. It was an agreeable sort of life for a good social mixer, and as Becket never stayed anywhere for long, he enjoyed the satisfying advantage of paying very little in tax.11. What do we know about Becket's possessions?A. He had enough baggage to stay for one night.B. He carried all of them around with him.C. He had thrown or given them away.D. He left most of his things at home when he traveled.12. Becket took a flat when _______.A. there were no suitable hotelsB. he meant to stay somewhere for several nightsC. he was sure of staying a year or moreD. he expected not to move on for a month at least13. How did Becket feel about taxation?A. It worried him, so he kept moving from place to place.B. He hated it, so he broke the tax laws.C. He was pleased he could honestly avoid it.D. He felt ashamed of not paying taxes.14. If anything worried Becket, it was _______.A. the thought of having too much baggageB. his habit of leaving things lying aboutC. the fact that he owned so littleD. the poor state of his clothes15. Becket did not keep books because ________.A, he had not interest in literatureB. the books he read belonged to other peopleC. he had no room in his case for themD. he preferred to give them to his friendsPassage FourSolar energy for your home is coming. It can help you as a single home owner. It can help the whole country as well. Whether or not solar energy can save your money depends on many things. Where you live is one factor and the type of home you have is another. Things like insulation (绝缘材料), present energy costs, and the type of system you buy are added factors.Using solar energy can help save our precious fuel. As you know, our supplies of oil and gas are very limited. There is just not enough on hand to meet all our future energy needs. Sooner or later Mother Nature will say that’s all. The only way we can delay hearing those words is by starting to save energy now and by using other sources, like the sun.We won’t have to worry about the sun’s running out of energy for another several billion years or so. Besides, the sun doesn’t offer as many problems as other energy sources. For example, fossil fuel(矿物燃料) adds to already high pollution levels. With solar energy, we will still need sources of energy, but we won’t need as much. That means we can cut down on our pollution problems. With all these good points, why don’t we use more so lar power? There are many reasons for this. The biggest reason is money. Until now, it was just not practical for a home owner to put in a solar unit. There were cheaper sources of energy. All that is changing now. Solar costs are starting to equal the costs of oil and electricity. Experts say that gas, oil and electricity prices will continue to rise. The demand for electricity is increasing rapidly. But new power plants will use more gas, oil or coal. Already in some places the supply of electricity is being rationed (限量供应). Solar energy is now in its infancy (初期). It could soon grow to become a major part of our nation’s energy supply.16. What’s this passage mainly about?A. Something about solar energy and pollution.B. Solar energy.C. Energy and pollution.D. All this is very difficult for a college student to examine, for much knowledge and personal experience is needed here to separate good plants from wild grass. 大学英语(1)期末考试复习资料模拟题大学英语(1)期末考试复习资料模拟题一、阅读:( 1 )There are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals.Short-term goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase.Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. My daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me £12.”Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. “ Come into the office, madam,” he said, “ I’ll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd .”The woman and her little girl followed him inside. 大学英语第一册1-4单元复习范围
大学英语1(1-4单元)复习范围一、课外阅读第一篇The vitamins necessary for a healthy body are normally supplied by a good mixed diet(混合膳食), including a variety of fruits and green vegetables. It is only when people try to live on a very restricted diet (限制膳食)that it is necessary to make special provision to supply the missing vitamins. An example of the dangers of a restricted diet may be seen in the disease known as beri-beri (脚气病). It used to distress(使痛苦)large numbers of Eastern peoples who lived mainly on rice. In the early years of this century, a scientist named Eijkman was trying to discover the cause of beri-beri. At first he thought it was caused by a germ. He was working in a Japanese hospital, where the patients were fed on polished rice(精白米)which had the outer husk(外皮)removed from the grain(谷物). It was thought this would be easier for weak and sick people to digest.Eijkman thought his germ theory was confirmed when he noticed the chickens in the hospital yard(院子), which were fed on leftovers (剩饭)from the patients' plates, were also showing signs of the disease. He then tried to isolate(使离析)the germ, but his experiments were interrupted by a hospital official, who declared that the polished rice, even though left over by the patients, was too good for chickens. It should be recooked for the patients, and the chickens should be fed on cheap rice with the outer layer still on the grain.Eijkman noticed that the chickens began to recover on the new diet. He began to consider the possibility that eating unpolished rice somehow prevented or cured beri-beri——even that a lack of some element(元素)in the husk might be the cause of the disease. Indeed this was the case. The element needed to prevent beri-beri was shortly afterwards isolated from rice husks and is now known as vitamin B. Nowadays, this terrible disease is much less common thanks to our knowledge of vitamins.第二篇I hear many parents complain that their teenage children are rebelling(反叛). I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly(大胆的) on their own, most of them are holding one another's hands for reassurance(放心)。

The space between six and three was there to mean." not any "tens. Sometimes people did not remember the space. It was hard to see and read.Later people used a dot to hold the space. Six hundred and three looked like this 6.3. But the dot was hard to see. So people put a circle around it like this 6⊙3. Then people could see the dot. They remembered the space. At last, only the circle around the dot was used. It was like a zero. This is one story of how the zero came to be used. Now zero has many important uses. Zero tells how many. Can you tell some other ways of using zero?1. Long, l ong ago people didn’t know how to ________.A. writeB. write zeroC. write numbersD. write sixty-three2. Long, long ago if they wrote two hundred-eight, people wrote ________.A. 28B. 2 8C. 228D. 2083. Later ________ was used to mean space.A. "not any"B. letter "0"C. zeroD. a dot4. People used circles ________.A. to remember waysB. to remember numbersC. not to forget the spaceD. to mean nothing5. The story tells us ________.A. how zero came to be usedB. how to write zeroC. what’s the use of zeroD. that zero means a dot, a circle or spacePassage 2If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak, and when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Y et many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong. If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents may be blamed, and few of us know that it is just his own fault. Have you ever found that some people can't read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write and when they have to remember things, they cannot write them down in a small notebook. As a result, they have to remember days, names, songs and stories, so their memory is being exercised the whole time.So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: practice remembering things in a way as other people do.1. Someone can't have a good memory if ________.A. he can't read or writeB. his parents haven't a good memoryC. he doesn't make good use of his memoryD. he doesn't use his arms or legs for some time2. If you do not use your arms or legs for some time, ________.A. they will become thinB. they will become weakC. they begin to ache all overD. you can't use them any more3. Which of the following statements is true?A. Y our memory needs chance for practice.B. A good memory is inherited from parents.C. Y our memory works in the different ways as your arms or legs.D. Don't learn to read and write if you want to have a good memory.4. Few people know that if someone has a poor memory it is ________.A. his own faultB. his parents' faultC. his teachers' faultD. his friends' fault5. The writer wants to tell us ________.A. how to read and write wellB. how to have a good memoryC. how to use our arms or legs betterD. how to learn from the people who can't read or writePassage 3A foreigner's first impression of the U.S. is likely to be that everyone is in a rush-often under pressure. City people always appear to be hurrying to get where they are going restlessly, seeking attention in a store, and elbowing others as they try to complete their errands(任务). Racing through daytime meals is part of the pace of life in this country.Working time is considered precious. Others in public eating places are waiting for you to finish so that they too can be served and get back to work within the time allowed. Each person hurries to make room for the next person. If you don’t, waiters will hurry you.Y ou also find drivers will be abrupt and people will push past you. Y ou will miss smiles, brief conversations, and small courtesies with strangers. Don't take it personally. This is because people value time highly, and they resent someone else "wasting" it beyond a certain courtesy point. The view of time affects the importance we attach to patience. In the American system of values, patience is not a high priority. Many of us have what might be called “a short fuse.” We begin to move restlessly about if we feel time is slipping away without some re-turnbe this in terms of pleasure, work value, or rest. Those coming from lands where time is looked upon differently may find this matter of pace to be one of their most difficult adjustments in both business and daily life. Many newcomers to the States will miss the opening courtesy of a business call, for example, They will miss the ritual interaction that goes with a welcoming cup of tea or coffee that may be a convention in their own country. They may miss leisurely business chats in a caféor coffee house. Normally, Americans do not assess their visitors in such relaxed surroundings over prolonged small talks. We seek out evidence of past performance rather than evaluate a business colleague through social courtesies. Since we generally assess and probe professionally rather than socially, we start talking business very quickly.1. Which of the following statements is wrong?A. Americans seem to be always under pressure.B. Americans attach less importance to patience.C. Americans don’t care much about ritual socializing.D. Americans are impolite to their business colleagues.2. In the fourth paragraph, “a high priority” means ________?A. a less important thingB. a first concernC. a good businessD. an attractive gift3. We can infer from the passage that the author’s tone in writing is ________.A. criticalB. ironicalC. appreciativeD. objectivePassage 4In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it’s a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite. A person who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence. (260 words)1. What is the main idea of this passage?A. It is not customary to telephone someone in the morning and in sleeping hours in the U.S.B. The role of time in social life over the world.C. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible in the U.S.D. Not every country treats the concept of time as the same.2. "Both these sayings mean the same thing: Men rule the world, but their wives rule them. Most of the American women like making their husbands and sons successful, but some of them want something for themselves. They want good jobs. When they work, they want to be better paid, they want to be as successful as men.The American women’s liberation movement was started by the women who don’t want to stand behind successful men. They don’t want to be told that certain jobs of offices are closed to them. They refuse to work side by side with men who do the same work for a higher pay.A liberated woman must be proud of being a woman and confidence (信心) herself. If somebody says to her, "Y ou’ve come a long way, baby. "She’ll smile and answer. "Not nearly as far as I’m going to go , baby."This movement is quite new, and many American women do not agree. But it has already made some important changes in women’s lives-in men’s lives, too.1. "The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world." means ________.A. woman can not only give birth to children but rule a countryB. women not only raise their children but support their husbandsC. women do play an important part in men’s lives and workD. a man can’t be successful without being married2. As she was thinking all about this, she suddenly heard the airline employee asking her to pick up her luggage and put it on the scales (称). Maria pulled and pulled. The bag was too heavy and she just couldn’t lift it up. The man behind her got very impatient. He, too, was waiting to check in his luggage.“What’s wrong with this girl?” He said, “Why doesn’t she hurry up?” He moved forward and placed his bag on the counter, hoping to check in first. He was in a hurry to get a good seat.Maria was very angry, but she was very polite. And in her best English she said, “Why are you so upset? There are enough seats for everyone on the plane. If you are in such a hurry, why can’t you give me a hand with my luggage?”The man was surprised to hear Maria speak English. He quickly picked up her luggage and stepped back. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, long-term goals cannot amount to very much without the achievementof solid short-term goals. Passage 8Britain and France are separated by the English Channel, a body of water that can be crossed in as few as 20 minutes. But the cultures of the two countries sometimes seem to be miles apart.Last Thursday Britain and France celebrated the 100th anniversary(周年纪念)of the signing of a friendship agreement called the Entente Cordiality. The agreement marked a new beginning for the countries following centuries of wars and love-hate partnership. But their relationship has been ups and downs over the past century. Just last year, there were fierce disagreements over the Iraq war-which British Prime Minister Tony Blair supported despite French President Jacques Chirac speaking out against it. This discomfort is expressed in Blair and Chirac’s body language at international meetings. While the French leader often greets German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder with a hug(拥抱), Blair just receives a handshake. However, some political experts say the war in Iraq could in fact have helped ties. The history of divisions may well be because of the very different ways in which the two sides see the world. But this doesn’t stop 12 million Br itons taking holidays in France each year. However, only 3 million French come in the opposite direction. Surveys(调查)show that most French people feel closer to the Germans than they do to the British. And the research carried out in Britain has found that only a third of the population believes the French can be trusted. Perhaps this bad feeling comes because the British dislike France’s close relationship with Germany, or because the French are not happy with Britain’s close links with the US.Whatever th e answer is, as both sides celebrate 100 years of “doubtful friendship”, they are at least able to make jokes about each other. Here’s one: What’s the best thing about Britain’s relationship with France? The English Channel.1. For centuries, the relationship between Britain and France is ________.A. friendlyB. impoliteC. brotherlyD. a mixture of love and hate2. The war in Iraq does ________ to the relationship between France and Britain.A. goodB. harmC. neither good nor harmD. both good and harm3. The British are not so friendly to ________ and the French are not so friendly to ________.A. Germany; AmericaB. America; GermanyC. Germany; GermanyD. America; America4. ________ are more interested in having holidays in _______.A. American people…BritainB. British people … GermanyC. French people … BritainD. British people … France5. What does the last sentence mean?A. As long as the English Channel exists, no further disagreement will form between France and Britain.B. The English Channel can prevent anything unfriendly happening in both France and Britain.C. France and Britain are near neighbors, and this will help balance the relationship between them.D. The English Channel is the largest enemy between France and Britain.Passage 9When the weather is hot, you go to a lake or an ocean and may feel cool. Why? The sun makes the earth hot, but it cannot make the water very hot. Although the air over the earth becomes hot, the air over the water stays cool. The hot air over the earth rises. Then the cool air over the water moves in and takes the place of the hot air. When you are near a lake or an ocean, you feel the cool air when it moves in. Y ou feel the wind, which makes you cool.Of course, scientists cannot answer all of our questions. If we ask, "Why is the ocean full of salt?" scientists will say that the salt comes from rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cold, it cracks. Rain falls into the cracks. The rain then carries the salt into the earth and into the rivers. The rivers carry the salt into the ocean. But then we ask, "What happens to the salt in the ocean? The ocean does not get more salty every year." Scientists are not sure about the answer to this question. We know a lot about our world. But there are still many answers that we do not have and we are curious.1. The main idea of the passage is ________.A. people feel cool when they are near a lake or an oceanB. scientists can explain everything we want to knowC. scientists can explain many things but not everythingD. the salt in the ocean comes from rocks2. Y ou feel cool when you are near a lake or an ocean because ________.A. the water is coldB. the earth is hotC. the water is colder than the earthD. the cool air from the water moves towards the land3. Now scientists know ________.A. what makes people feel cool near a lake or an ocean in summerB. everything about the oceanC. why the ocean does not get more and more saltyD. what happens to the salt in the ocean4. A rock cracks when ________.A. rain fallsB. it gets very hot or very coldC. it gets very dryD. it gets very salty5. People are always curious because ________.A. they know nothing about the worldB. they know little about the worldC. there are answers they do not haveD. all of the abovePassage 10Community service is an important component of education here at our university. Anyone then could read in the newspapers about the building companies who offered to put people into a new house 21 only a $1,000 deposit. Of course, the remainder had to be paid off with interest over a period of twenty years or so.The worker and his wife hopefully went to one of these companies 22 this wonderful offer. And the man in the office said. “Yes, sure. You bring along $1,000 and we can 23 you with a new house.”So the worker and his wife had to work hard and in twelve months’time they returned to the building man with $1,000. But the man in the office said, “Look, I’m sorry, 24 we’ll need $1,500 now. Costs have gone up since we saw you last, you know.”The couple thought it over and decided it would not take very long to save the extra $500 if they worked hard.In six moths they worked 25 overtime and saved the $500 in spite of the high rent they hadto pay for their flat. For each question there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose one best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Task 1Hair loss is one of those things we still do not understand. Science has, of course, shown that men are more likely than women to suffer major hair loss. Some kinds of hair loss are temporary (暂时的), an effect of illness. In those cases we can expect the hair to grow back.It all depends on whether the hair root is alive. If it is not, hair loss is permanent and nothing will help. Some daily loss of hair is a normal, healthy sign. Most people lose between 40 to 50 scalp hairs each day. Each of these scalp hairs grows for from two to six years and then rests. About three months later it is pushed out by a new hair growing from the same root. This is not something that should cause great concern.Something else we know is that normal hair loss is seasonal, with the most hair loss occurring in the fall. Everyone experiences a normal cycle of loss and growth. The problem of hair loss results when loss is greater than growth. The main cause of hair loss in men seems to be accumulation (积累) of a hormone (荷尔蒙) in the body. When that hormone reaches a certain level, the hair growing period is shortened and hair loss is the result. This is no cure for most cases of hair loss. This, however, is not the end of the world.31. According to science, _________.
