Why is a bicycle so popular in China? There are several reasons. First, it is not expensive and almost every family can afford it. Second, it is more convenient to go to work by bicycle than by bus. Buses are nowadays so crowded during the rush hour that you may waste a lot of time. Going by bike saves you time and also it is easy for you to control your time. Besides, it takes less space to park it. What’s more, riding a bicycle is a good sport to exercise your body.

Compared with a car, a bicycle is much cheaper and with a month salary a person can buy two or three bicycles. Though a car runs faster it pollutes the air and its noise makes people unbearable. With a bicycle, you can go wherever you like no matter how narrow the street is but it is almost impossible for a car to do so.

China is a developing country with a large population. Taking this situation into account, bicycles will be used as the main transport means in China for a long time. Most people will still ride bicycles to go to work or to school. The emperor country of bicycles will remain for at least dozens of years.

Man Is to Survive

The human race is facing many problems such as shortages of energy resources, human diseases, environmental pollution, and population explosion. These problems not only bring us lots of trouble but also cause a panic among some people.

Pessimists say that the human race is facing extinction. To their mind, it is now too late to solve these problems. They predict that natural resources will become exhausted sooner or later, that some incurable illness will spread widely, that pollution will eventually poison the planet, and that unchecked population growth will cause mass starvation.

But I disagree with the above pessimistic statements. From historical point of view, the human race has always shown that it has the wisdom to face up to these problems and finally conquer any threat to its survival. In the future, too, mankind will survive by using its wisdom to find a way out of its problems.

Changes in People’s Diet in China

The table shows significant changes in the diet of the Chinese people between 1986 and 1990. Grain, which used to be the main food of most people in China, is now playing a less important role. On the other hand, the consumption of high-nutrition food such as milk, meat, chicken, fish has increased rapidly.

The changes in diet can be accounted for by a number of factors. One factor is that people are much wealthier than before. With higher income, they can afford to buy good foods. The fact that people have realized the importance of a balanced diet to their health is another factor because lack of certain amount of meat or milk, for example, will result in poor health. A further factor is due to the economic reform, meat, chicken, fish and milk, which were scarce in the past, are produced in large quantities. For all those reasons, what was formerly called "the basket of vegetables" has now become that of varied foods.

The changes in diet indicate the significant social improvement. They are also the evidence of the improved economic conditions in China. If this trend continues, there will be greater changes in people's diet in the future.
