The only clear benefit was their good vocabulary. The latest study of 4,800 children born in 2000 and 2001, was conducted by researchers at the Institute of Education, University of London. All had mothers who worked when their children were babies. Children cared for by grandparents made up over one third of the sample and the researchers said that the differences between this group and the others were considerable. In terms of social skills, boys in the care of grandparents did particularly badly, regardless of social background. The researchers said that other researches suggested that formal childcare with qualified people could help children to develop the social skills needed to get on with their peers and to avoid more serious problems later.“Children who are looked after by grandparents, on the other hand, spend more time with adults,”said Kirstine and Denise, of the Institute of Education. The threeyearolds who had been in formal childcare from nine months achieved higher scores人教版新课标英语必修一Unit-5 Nelson Mandela a modern hero习题in a “school read” assessment(评估) that measured their understanding of colors, letters, numbers, sizes and shapes. In terms of vocabulary, the children cared for by grannies did well, especially if they had highly educated mothers. “This may, of course, reflect the better vocabulary skills of grandmothers in such families,” said Dr Hansen, research director of the Millennium Cohort Study. “But it may also be partly because grandparents talk to children more than other carers, not only because they have more time but because they make up for a reduction in physical activities with the child.”10.What does “the sample” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A.A small part of a song from a CD or a record.B.A group of children chosen for the research.C.A small part of something that is examined.D.A small amount of a product for customers to try.11.Which of the following is NOT related to the finding of the study?A.Formal childcare with qualified people could avoid more serious problems later. But Rankin drew customers charmed by his huge smile and agricultural knowledge. He remembered to set aside things you asked for, would cash your check if you needed bills and gave your 10-year-old child his or her first job. The people who came to Saturday’s market sang to Rankin, presented him with poems about his influence on their lives and told stories of good deeds he had done for them. Many described coming to Rankin’s market as a routine in their lives. Rankin said he is retiring because he wants to spend more time traveling to see his children and a sister back in Ireland. The children of one of Rankin’s partners are taking over Twin Springs. He has a “fantasy,” he said, of using his knowledge to help fruit -growers elsewhere in the world. He has faith that others can keep the Woodley Park market going, that the role of a farmers market is now established. 1. People love Rankin mainly because he ________. Unit 5 Nelson Mandela-a modern hero using language课时作业第一节阅读理解(共20小题:每小题2分,满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,迭出最佳选项。

AIn Shanghai’s Grand Theater, a fashionable, mainly young audience applauds enthusiastically as Guo Yong takes center stage. He holds a large bushy tree branch with leaves. Blowing on oneof the leaves, he produces a sound like the singing of birds as he plays a traditional Buyi folk song. Some other musicians are also playing the traditional instruments from various ethnic groups in China. It’s the first time such music has ever been performed in the Grand Theater. But all this is the efforts of Zhu Zheqin, a Cantonese-born singer; who has made it her mission to help preserve China’s traditional ethnic music.Several years ago, after being appointed a United Nations Development Program ambassador, Zhu traveled through some of China’s remotest regions in an attempt to document the traditional music of various minority groups. In the course other four- month trip, she recorded more than a thousand songs. But she noticed that many of the best musicians were old, and some of the music was at risk of dying out.“I was shocked the beauty of what I heard-it was so good,” she says. “But it needed support.I hope to let people see the beauty of these things in the contemporary times.”So Zhu decided to introduce some of the musicians to a wider audience. By doing this, she hopes to rekindle (再次点燃) the interest of the younger generation. “Young people don’t like thi s music much; they prefer pop music and love songs. They think these songs are something their grandma sings. This kind of repackaging gives young people a new door into their heritage.”Zhu believes China needs to look again at its own roots. “China today is basically all Western art; in our conservatories (音乐学院) Western classical music is the top,” she says. “For China to really contribute to the world, we need to go on our own path. So what can represent China today?” The answer, she suggests, is to move from “made in China” to “created in China”.1. From the first paragraph, we learn that .A. the audience are all young peopleB. Guo Yong is playing the Buyi folk musicC. Guo Yong is the only minority performer on the stageD. tree branches make good musical instruments2. Which of the following is TRUE of Zhu Zheqin?A. She teaches music in a conservatories.B. She is helping preserve Chinese ethnic music.C. She works as an official in the United Nations.D. She’s created all the music for the Gra nd Theater.3. What is Zhu Zheqin’s idea about Chinese traditional music?A. It is completely out of date.B. Only old musicians play it well.C. It needs changes to attract young people.D. It is quickly dying out5. What does Zhu Zheqin mean in the last paragraph?A. The traditional music should be repackaged.B. Chinese conservatories shouldn’t teach Western music.C.
