The contest is the latest in a trend of beauty contests for the rich that has been criticized heavily in the media, on the net, and even by the government. The new contest was organized online, and its first round was held simultaneously in several major cities. I nformation and communications are central to modem society and organizations. One approach to understand the working environment is to consider an organization as a communications system. An organization that has open lines of communication with valid, honest information going up, down, and throughout the organization will be much more effective and a much better place to work than the organization that attempts to restrict the flow of information or distort and deceive. When leadership attempts to keep workers in the dark, workers tend to become distrustful. This undermines their cooperation.I t is easy to understand the value and importance of open, honest communications and valid information. Yet, few organizations are able to function in this manner. In the long run, poor communication will undermine the entire organization. Restricting communication and distorting information are symptoms of short-range thinking. We must avoid these stupid, short-sighted traps and constantly strive for an open communications system with objective information.________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________信息和沟通对现代社会和企业组织是非常重要的。

1Nature vs nurture: hard facts and strong storiesANYONE who still believes that our psychological dispositions are due largely to our genes will learn a lot from this book. The same goes for those who think they are predominantly shaped by our environment. Jerome Kagan, an emeritus professor of psychology at Harvard University, has spent much of his career unpacking the complexities behind human personality and behaviour. In The Temperamental Thread he navigates a path through the conflicting evidence with great skill and eloquence. The thesis behind the title is that everyone is born with a biologically based temperamental bias that is evident in infancy and influences our future behaviour, but how that pans out as we grow up depends strongly on a range of factors such as our ethnicity and gender, how our parents treat us, their social class, the size of our home town and whether or not we have older siblings. Temperamental bias, he explains, resembles the inherited components of a bird's song: "Although the bird's genes contribute to the basic components of the song, they do not determine the specific songs the adult bird will sing." Kagan's expertise derives partly from an exhaustive longitudinal study in which he followed the lives of more than 450 people from 16 weeks old to adulthood. He found that those who become distressed or strongly aroused as infants when confronted with unfamiliar objects, such as brightly coloured mobiles, tend to grow into timid or anxious adolescents, while less reactive infants develop a more relaxed, spontaneous disposition. However, he stresses that these outcomes are not fixed since the developmental environment can powerfully distort the effect of genes. For example, while thepossession of a gene variant which disrupts serotonin(血清素) activity in the brain can result in social anxiety in a woman raised in a stable middle-class family, it can contribute to criminality in a man brought up in poverty by abusive parents. This kind of analysis leads Kagan into some interesting areas, such as the origins of psychological differences between the sexes and between members of different ethnic groups. He is also happy to throw in the occasional wild speculation, such as the idea that women are better placed than men to save the world from ecological disaster.None of this undermines the serious messages in his book, perhaps the most important of which is that we are still largely ignorant about the biology that underlies behavioural predispositions and the cascade of psychological processes that flow from them.

They take organs from one body and integrate them into another, granting the lucky recipient a longer, better life. Sadly, every year thousands of other people are less fortunate, dying while they wait for suitable organs to be found. The terrible constraint on organ transplantation is that every life extended depends on the death of someone young enough and healthy enough to have organs worth transplanting. Such donors are few. The waiting lists are long, and getting longer.2.Freedom from this constraint is the dream of every transplant surgeon. So far attempts to make artificial organs have been disappointing: nature is hard to mimic. Hence the renewed interest in trying to use organs from animals.3.Doctors in India have just announced that they have successfully transplanted a heart from a pig into a person. Pressure to increase the number of such xenotransplants(异种器官移植)seems to be growing. In Europe and America, herds of pigs are being specially bred and genetically engineered for organ donation. During 1996 at least two bigreports on the subject -- one in Europe and one in America -- were published. They agreed that xenotransplants were permissible on ethical grounds, and cautiously recommended that they be allowed. America's Food and Drug Administration has already published draft guidelines for xenotransplantation.4.The ethics of xenotransplantation are relatively unworrying. People already kill pigs both for food and for sport; killing them to save a human life seems, if anything, easier to justify. However, the science of xenotransplantation is much less straightforward.5.I'll never forget the feeling I got one winter night as I walked the deserted streets after many grueling hours at the hospital. I suddenly realized that I no longer felt tense or tired. All the worries about my patients' illnesses, as well as my own personal cares, seemed to evaporate as quickly as the smoky vapor of my breath in the frosty night. As I incorporated walking into my schedule, not only were my spirits lifted, but my weight and blood pressure were gradually reduced. I began reviewing the medical literature on walking. From this research, and my clinical observations as a family physician, I found that it is possible to walk your way to better health, a trimmer body and a longer life -- no matter what your age.(翻译练习一英译汉)参考答案:一、将下列句子译成汉语:1.

China is the world's largest coal producer and consumer. Coal accounts for a large part of China's energy consumption. In the future, the share of coal in China's overall energy consumption will be reduced. However, coal consumption will continue to rise in absolute terms. China is facing severe environmental problems today, and coal has played a significant role in causing air pollution. Although China's coal resources are very rich, we should start looking for substitute resources. This will not only benefit the environment, but will bring economic payoff in the long run.
