According to a 1998 Associated Press story, this Balkan fairy tale turned into reality for one poor family. Before the start of the Bosni an war, the Malkoc family lived next to a small lake in the northwestern village of Jezero. One day in 1990, Smajo Malkoc returned from a trip toAustria with an unusual gift for his teenage sons, Dzevad and Catib: an aquarium(鱼缸) with two goldfish. Two years passed before Bosnian Serb forces advanced on Jezero. The women and children fled, and the men stayed back to resist the attacking soldiers. Smajo Malkoc was killed. When his wife, Fehima, sneaked back into the destroyed village to bury her husband and rescue what remained of their belongings, she took pity on the fish in the aquarium. She let them out into the nearby lake, saying to herself, “This way, they might be more fortunate than us.” Fast-forward to 1995, Fehima Malkoc returned with her sons to Jezero. Nothing but ruins remained of their home and their village. Through misty eyes she looked toward the lake. Glimpsing something strange, she walked over to the shore. “The whole lake was shining from the tho usands of golden fish in it,” she said. “It made me immediately think of my husband. This was something he left me that I never hoped for.”During the years of killing all around the lake, life underwater had flourished. After their return, Fehima Malkoc and her sons started caring for and selling the goldfish. By 1998, homes, stores, and coffee shops all over the region feature aquariums containing fish from Jezero. The Malkoc house, reb uilt on its original site, is one of the biggest in the village. Two new cars are parked in front, and the family says it has enough money to quit worrying about the future. “It was a special kind of gift from our father,” Dzevad Malkoc said. A paper to be developed at the international congress of cognitive psychotherapy(认知心理疗法) in Gothenburg suggests a link between the attitudes of women abused by their parents and early exposure to the wrong sort of fairy tales. It says girls who identified with Cinderella, Rapunzel and Beauty in Beauty and the Beast were more likely to say in destructive relationships as adults. The theory was developed by Susan Darker Smith, a psychotherapist at the University of Derby. She interviewed 67 female abuse survivors and found that 61 put up with serial abuse because they believed they could change their partners and with patience, composition and love. Hardly any of the women in a control group, who had not experienced abuse, thought they could change their partners in this way.The same view was taken by male survivors who had been abused as children. These women and men said they would leave a relationship rather than put up with abuse from a partner. Ms Darker Smith found the abused women were much more likely to identify with Cinderella and other submissive female characters in fairytales, who were later rescued by a stranger prince or hero.Although most girls heard the stories, damage appeared to be done to those who adopted the submissive characters as role models. “They believe if their love is strong enough they can change their parents’ behaviors, she said.”Overexposure in children to stories that emphasize the transformational qualities of love may make women believe they can damage their partners.”For example, they might never have understood the obvious flaw(缺点) in the story of Rapunzel, who remained locked in a high tower until rescued by a knight on a white horse, who broke the door down. “The question,” said Ms Darker Smith, “is why she did not break the door down herself.”72. The passage is especially intended for _________.A. parents with young daughtersB. girls who like reading fairy storiesC. girls who think they can change their partnersD. parents with grown-up daughters73. Cinderella, Rapunzel and Beauty in Beauty and the Beast are similar in that _________.A. they all married some princesB. they all changed their partners with loveC. they were all abused by their partnersD. they all put up with abuse74. Which of the following statements is true of the women in a control group?A. They don’t believe in fairy tales.B. They don’t believe in the transformational qualities of love.C. They have also experienced abuse.D. They survived abuse.75. What does the underlined word “submissive” in the 3rd paragraph probably mean?A. kind-heartedB. obedientC. gentleD. easy-goingSection CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.76.Every living thing has what scientists call a biological clock that controls behavior. The biological clock tells plants when to form flowers and when the flowers should open. It tells insects when to leave the protective cocoon and fly away, and it tells animals and human beings when to eat, sleep and wake.77. Events outside the plant and animal affect the actions of some biological clock. Scientists recently found, for example, that a tiny animal changes the color of its fur because of the number of hours of daylight. In the short days of winter, its fur becomes white. The fur becomes gray brown in color in the longer hours of daylight in summer.78. Inner signals control other biological clocks. German scientists found that some kind of internal clock seems to order birds to begin their long migration flight twice each year. Birds prevented from flying become restless when it is time for the trip. But they become calm again when the time of flight has ended.Scientist say they are beginning to learn which parts of the brain contain biological clock. An American researcher, Martin Moorhead, said a small group of cells near the front of the brain seems to control the timing of some of our actions. These cells tell a person when to awake, when to sleep and when to seek food. Scientists say there probably are other biological clock cells that control other body activities.80. Dr. Moorhead is studying how our biological clocks affect the way we do our work. For example, most of us have great difficulty if we often change to different work hours. It can take many days for a human body to accept the major change in work hours. Dr. Moorhead said industrials officials should have a better understanding of biological clocks and how they affect workers. He said such understanding could cut sickness and accidents at work and would help increase a factory ’s production.Section DDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions and complete the statements in the fewest possible words.Booklovers, most of them, will tell you what a pleasure it is to lend a favorite read to a friend – the novel you stayed up all night to get to the end of; the travel book that made you feel as if you yourself were on a train ride through India. For a while it seemed that e-book users were to be denied this pleasure of lending to friends. You could buy a book or magazine for your reading device, but you couldn’t lend it out.But now, with the Nook, the US book chain Barnes and Noble’s response to Amazon’s Kindle, electronic readers will be able to press their latest literary enthusiasm on their friends, just like readers of physical books can. You simply email the book from your Nook and your friend can read it for two weeks, using any device with the Barnes & Noble e-book reader software. It’s a big improvement from previous e-book readers. The Nook offers other features too. You read in black and white on the main screen, just like with Kindle. The difference is that on the lower part of the device there’s a color touch screen. It allows you to browse through a book or magazine, but goes black when you’re not using it so that you save power.Another exciting thing about the Nook is that it offers Wi-Fi (无线上网服务), arguably a big advance on previous e-book readers. Customers in the United States can use the Internet connection to read whole e-books at Barnes and Noble’s hundreds of bookstores for free. None of Barnes and Noble’s competitors can come close to this. But the Nook, ironically, might just turn out to be a money-loser for Barnes and Noble, or at least a job-loser for Barnes and Noble’s employees. According to Marian Maneker at The Big Money Website, if the Nook is successful it mi ght take sales from the company’s bookstores, eventually forcing their closure and the loss of thousands of jobs.81. What do booklovers take pleasure in, according to the passage?82. According to Paragraph 2, your friend will be able to ___________________ with the Nook.83. According to the passage, the three new features of the Nook are: lending books to your friends, a color touchscreen and ___________________ in Barnes and Noble’s stores.84. What might happen to Barnes and Noble’s bookstores if the Nook is successful?(Note: Answer the questions and complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS)第II卷〔45分〕I. ABest Science FictionThe Sprawl Trilogy by William GibsonThis classic trilogy from william Gibson consists of Neuromancer, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive. The book that started the entire concept of Cyberpunk, the Hugo Award, Nebula Awardand Philip K. Dick Awardwinning Neuromancer remains one of the best scifi books ever written and the entire trilogy is worth a read, even if it’s the original that gets all the praise.Hyperion Cantos by Dan SimmonsThis series by Dan Simmons consists of Hyperion, The Fall of Hyperion, End ymion and The Rise of Endymion. Truly one of the great works in science fiction history, the Hugo Awardwinning Hyperion Cantos is an absolutely excellent story of extreme terror, characterbuilding and wildworldbuilding that is almost without equal in the type. How we haven’t gotten a proper onscreen adaptation of this series yet, I have no idea, but Perhaps it’s best left in its original, amazing book form.Ender’s Game Quartet by Orson Scott CardEnder’s Game is often read in schools, but it has incredibly mature themes like isolation, loneliness, petition and fear many of which are more relevant now than when Orson Scott Card first began the series in 1985. If you love Ender’s Game, it’s worth reading the whole series to follow the scifi adventures of Andrew “Ender” Wiggin: Ender’s Game, Ender in Exile, Xenocide and Children of the Mind.Snow Crash by Neal StephensonThis is the only standalone book on this list, as the rest are all in a series, so if you don’t feellike investing in 300, 000 pages of content, Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash is for you. This book is the heir ( 继承人) to Neuromancer’s Cyberpunk throne and an absolutely excellent read from Stephenson. The authoruses virtual reality as his setting, and the main character is a pizzadeliveryman in one world and a warrior prince in another.21.Which book won the most awards?A. Neuromancer.B. Hyperion.C. Ender’s Game.D. Snow Crash.22.What do we know about Ender’s Game QuarteA. It consists of three books.B. It is popular among students.C. It has been adapted into a film.D. It focuses on children’s problems.23.What is special about Snow Crash?A. It’s the longest story.B. It’s about the solar system.C. It’s not a series.D. It’s not a real story.BIsaac Newton is one of the greatest geniuses in history, though in his younger years, nobody would have guessed that he would grow up to bee one of the world’s most brilliant minds. He was born prematurely (早产) and quite small. He hated his step family. He went to aschool that did not teach mathematics, and then later he was removed. His mother was widowed twice. She urged him to bee a farmer, and he hated that too. He was a working student in college, doing odd jobs to pay for his education. And he graduated from Cambridge without honors. He didn’t look outstanding at all, and neither was his story. But his mind saw more plex, and fascinating stories in the concepts of mathematics and physics. His plain life did not bother him at all.Though he went through his Cambridge years with barely any honors, the inside of his study was found to have some of the most groundbreaking discoveries in physics and mathematics. He went on to discover many of his famous theories, including the generalized binomial theorem, power series, and infinite sums. He also observed the way light is refracted ( 折射) by lenses and developed his own Newtonian telescope. Through his discovery of the Laws of Universal Gravitation and Laws of Motion, the field of physics was forever transformed. If there was anything constant about the life of Isaac Newton, it wasn’t merely that his brain was large, but that it was continuously filled with wonder. Isaac Newton’s life was brilliant, not because of his wondrous adventures, but because he saw wonder in everything from the minutedetails of mathematical philosophy, to how the world works. Truly, there is nothing boring or ordinary about a mind that seeks adventure in all things.24.Which word can describe Issac Newton as a young man?A. Ordinary.B. Diligent.C. Happy.D. Intelligent.25.What can we infer about Issac Newton from the third paragraph?A. His life experience was extraordinary.B. He had a gift for math and physics.C. He was good at making up stories.D. He didn’t care about his grades at school.26.What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 5?A.Newton’s life was full of adventures.B.Nothing Is impossible to a willing heart.C.A brain good at discovery is never boring.D.Newton had a brain larger than any other’s.27.What can be the best title of this text?A.The Achievements of Isaac NewtonB.The Brilliant Life of Isaac NewtonC.Interest Is the Best Secret of SuccessD.Hard Work Makes up for Lack of IntelligenceCThe health benefits of staying active are already wellknown. It can help you manage weight, keep blood sugar levels down and reduce risk factors for heart disease. Now, a new study suggests that regularly playing sports, especially badminton or tennis, is not only healthy but also reduces your risk of death, at any age, by approximately 50%. This is a big scale population study to explore the health benefits of sports in terms of death rate. The study evaluated responses from 80, 306 adults aged 30 and above in England and Scotland, who were surveyed about their health, lifestyle and exercise patterns. After adjusting factors such as age, sex, weight, smoking habits, alcohol use, education and other forms of exercise besides the named sports, the researchers pared the risk of deathamong people who took part in a sport to those who didn’t. The percentage of reduced risk of death was found to be: 47% for racket(球拍)sports, 28% for swimming and 15% for cycling. In addition to this, the study didn’t find any significant reduction in the risk for sports likerunning and football. The findings also exposed that over 44% of the participants met the guidelines for the remended exercise levels to stay fit and healthy, which amounts to 150 minutes of moderate(适度的) physical activity in a week.Does this mean you stop running or playing football and switch to tennis instead? Every kind of sport and physical activity has different physical, social and mental benefits attached to it. The apparent lack of benefits of running and football could result from several variables that were not taken into account.Being active helps you feel happier and live longer. So, the most important step is to take part in any kind of sport that you are likely to enjoy and follow in the long term.28.How is the study conducted?A. By doing parative experiments.B. By analyzing previous data.C. By evaluating survey information.D. By tracking participants for a long time.29.What does the underlined part “the named sports” refer to?A. Ball sports.B. Racket sports.C. Individual sports.D. Traditional sports.30.What can we inter from paragraph 5?A. Few people will play football.B. Tennis will bee more popular.C. The result of this study is wrong.D. The study needs to be further improved.31.What does the author advise people to do?A. Stick to any sport that you like.B. Play badminton and tennis only.C. Stop running and playing football.D. Do any sport according to guidelines.DA new study found that some methods for measuring a species’ generation time might underestimate (低估) the likelihood that some species will die out.A species generation time is how long it takes for a generation to be replaced by its matureoffspring. This is different for every specie and dramatically impacts how quickly a species can respond to changes in their environment. The generation time of a mouse is only a few months, whereas the African elephant has a generation time of 22 years. The longer the generation time, the slower a species can adapt to environmental changes and may, therefore, be more likely to go extinct. In some risk assessment models, population reduction is measured on the scale of three times a species generation time. If a species is believed to mature and produce offspring in five years, then how much its population has declined will be measured over a 15year interval. But if a species generation time is underestimated, so is the threat status of the species. We tested the influence of errors in different measures of generation time, including those used by the IUCN Red List assessments and found that these errors could potentially lead to an overly optimistic assessment of extinction risk for some species. To overe this, we pared different types of errors in seven monly used measures of generation time. We propo se a new estimate which predicts a species’ generation time from its body mass and reproductive lifespan.Still, the lack of data is a thorny problem for making accurate calculations. We’re planning to explore how to fill some of these knowledge gaps by paring survival and reproduction data from wild and captive populations, using data from nearly 1, 200 zoos and aquarium over 40 years, on more than 21,000 species.32.What can we know from the second paragraph?A.Elephants are less endangered than mice.B.Mice have a longer generation time than elephants.C.Mice are more adaptable than elephants.D.Elephants are more advanced than mice.33.What is the time range some assessment models use to measure the elephant population.A. 15 years.B. 22 years.C. 44 years.D. 66 years.34.What is the result of underestimating the generation time of some species?A. Overestimating their survival.B. Causing them to die out quickly.C. Ignoring their danger to humans.D. Accelerating their reproduction.35.What will the researchers do next?A. Doing experiments.B. Analyzing more data.C. Counting animals in zoos.D. Popularizing animal knowledge.

Is it because they are lazy? Of course not. In fact, the difference in spelling was started by Noah Webster(1758 — 1843). He was a teacher who reformed (改革) English to make American identity (特征) stronger. Linguists (语言学家) celebrate his birthday on October 16 every year. After the Revolutionary War (1775 — 1783), Webster believed that Americans should have their own dictionary, rather than rely on British dictionaries. He dropped the British “u” in some words. And he changed “centre” into “center” for children to learn English by spelling words more like what they sounded. He used “subway” instead of British word “underground”. Some other examples are “soccer” and “football”, “fall” and “autumn”.Webster wasn’t shy about expressing his opinions. In defining (定义) preposterous(unreasonable), he wrote: “A republican government in the hands of female is preposterous.” Webster spent 28 years on the project before completing the 70,000-word dictionary with his American-style spelling in 1828. He also added local words. His dictionary was widely used in schools. Linguists believed it helped a new country achieve unity (统一) and cultural independence at a time when most people cared about political freedom.“He was the creator of our language and the creator of American identity,” said Joshua Kendall, who is working on a book about Webster. “He at last brought us together through our language.”4.Which is NOT true about Webster’s dictionary?A.It has local words in it.B.It is a 70,000-word dictionary.C.All the words are spelled without “u”.D.Its words are in American-style spelling.5.What does the underlined phrase “rely on” in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Depend on.B.Trust in.C.Put up with.D.Give up. 6.What do people think of Webster’s dictionary?A.It is the only dictionary that Americans still use today.B.It helped to bring Americans together besides its cultural influence.C.It has no influence on the development of American English.D.It helped to make American English more useful than British English.7.What’s the main idea of the passage?A.The development of the British English.B.American English is better than British English.C.Noah Webster added local words to the dictionary.D.Noah Webster wrote an American English dictionary and reformed English.COne August afternoon, Richard Allen dropped off his last passenger, Mrs. Carey. Lifting two grocery bags, he followed her across the yard and stood on the step of her house. Glancing up, he saw a large wasp (黄蜂) nest under the roof. Allen had heard that wasps can become more likely to sting (蜇) in summer. He mentioned this to Mrs. Carey, who had opened the door.“Oh, they don’t bother me,” she said lightly. “I go in and out all the time.”Anxiously, Allen looked at the nest again—— to see the wasps flying straight at him. “Hurry!” he shouted to Mrs. Carey. “Get in!”She stepped quickly inside. Allen ran for his mini-bus. Too late; they were upon him. Just as he jumped aboard, half a dozen red spots showed on his arm, and he felt more on his back and shoulders. As he was driving down the road, Allen felt as if something was burning at the back of his neck, and the “fire” was spreading forward toward his face. And immediate anxiety took hold of him.Allen knew that stings could cause some persons to die. But he had been stung the previous summer and the after-effects soon passed. However, what he didn’t know what that the first sting had turned his body into a time bomb waiting for the next to set off an explosion.Miles from the nearest medical assistance, Allen began to feel his tongue thick and heavy and his heartbeat louder. Most frightening, he felt his breathing more and more difficult. He reached for the radio mike (话筒), trying to call the mini-bus center, but his words were hardly understandable. Signals were also poor that far out. He knew a rescue team was on 24-hour duty at the Amherst Fire Department’s north station. So his best chance was to make a run for it.Rushing down the mountain, Allen tried not to panic, focusing his mind on each sharp turn. He was almost through the last of them when he felt sure he was going into shock (休克). Just then he reached for the radio mike again.“Call fire station,” he shouted, concentrating to form the words. “Emergency. Bee sting. Emergency. There in ten minutes.”“Five-ten,” the center replied.Hold on, Allen thought. Keep your eyes open. Breathe. Keep awake. At last he reached the station. Two firemen ran out. Allen felt their hands grasp him before he hit the ground. You made it, he thought.8.It is mentioned in the passage that wasps are more likely to attack when _______.A.there are huge noisesB.strangers are approachingC.the air is filled with food smellD.the hottest season comes around9.Allen didn’t know that if stung by wasps again, he would _______.A.have no after-effectsB.suffer from sharper painC.surely lose his lifeD.become more sensitive10.Allen failed at his first attempt to send his message to the mini-bus center because _______.A.he was unable to speak clearlyB.his radio equipment was poorC.he was in a state of shockD.no one was on duty11.Which would be the best title for the passage?A.Allen, A Helpless DriverB.Wasps, Bloody KillersC.A Race Against DeathD.War Against WaspsDArmy ants are mainly distributed in South America and Africa and mostly live in the Amazon River basin. They like to live in groups and generally one or two million in a group. They are migratory, have no fixed on the move. When encountering obstacles such as gaps, army ants are able to connect their bodies to each other and build a bridge for large groups of ants to pass through, saving crawling distance. The bridge can be built and removed very quickly, in seconds.Christopher Reid of the University of Sydney’s Insect Behaviour and Ecology Laboratory, said that when studying the ant bridge, he initially assumed that once the ant bridge was built the two end positions of the bridge would be fixed, and the bridge itself would be relatively stationary (不动的).However, after observation, it was found that the ant bridge would constantly change according to the army ants’ knowledge of the outside world. The ant bridge can move slowly from the original position, increasing the number of ants in the bridge, extending the length of the bridge, so that other ants may save a lot of efforts by using the ant bridge instead of taking other routes. In this way, it can continuously compress the distance to the target area.Meanwhile, the researchers have also found that the changing ant bridge does not always achieve the shortest distance. When the bridge is extended to a certain extent, the number of ants involved in the construction of the ant bridge will not continue to increase, and the length of the bridge will stop growing.Researchers believe that army ants use the best methods in the construction of bridges. Since the ants involved in building the bridge are unable to participate in other work, the colony stops putting in more ants as soon as it finds that the number of ants put into extending the bridge is out of balance with the number of ants needed for other jobs.12.What is mainly introduced about army ants in paragraph 1?A.Their migration.B.Their distribution.C.Their living habits.D.Their hunting targets.13.What did the research find about the bridge built by army ants ?A.It becomes longer constantly.B.It keeps unchanged once built.C.It achieves the shortest distance.D.It is adjusted according to the needs.14.What does the underlined word “compress” mean in paragraph 3?A.Reduce.B.Calculate.C.Neglect.D.Judge.15.What is the writing purpose of the text ?A.To stress the importance of cooperation.B.To explain army ants’ incredible strength.C.To show army ants’ collective intelligence.D.To indicate the harmony between nature and human.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AIt does not have to be January 1st to give yourself a chance to make the most out ofyour day. Every day is a new day and a fresh start to learn, grow, develop your strengths, free yourself from past regrets or hurts, and move forward older and wiser. Every day gives you a chance to reinvent (重新审视) yourself. It is never too late to change things that arenotworking in your life. Each day is a new beginning and a piece of blank paper. How would you like to create your day? What would you like to paint on it? If you wake up in a negative mind, you are more likely to paint a dark picture throughout the day, and your picture will not show hope, happiness and joy.If you take each day to think actively, and have a positive intention (意图;目的)for how you would like to create your day, how would your life be different? What can daily positive intentions do for you? Every day you will give yourself the gift of an“attitude of gratitude (感恩)”.Each day is a chance to look at things in a different way. You can experience each day in the beauty of the world —and the beauty of you who are in it! You find yourself changing from “I can't” to “I can”. With a focus on positive intentions, you feel you are full of power and more like a “winner” than a “loser”.You pay more attention to the present, and will be more likely to live fully inthe present each moment of each day. After all, the past is a great place to visit, but you don't want to live there! So how about starting each day taking a moment to think of a positive intention for the day? 1.The first paragraph mainly tells us ________.A. learning is helpful in reinventing ourselvesB. January 1st is the most important dayC. we should make every day a new startD. we needn't change ourselves at all2.If you have daily positive intentions, you will ________.A. have a busy lifeB. get a positive resultC. get gifts from othersD. be a complete loser3.From the passage we can learn that ________.A. positive intentions for each day are of great helpB. think actively and you will be a winner, not a loserC. the present is not where you should live for everD. past regrets or hurts can make you older and wiserBEveryone wants to know the secrets of a long and healthy life. Here are some discoveries from health experts. Many studies looking into the lives of centenarians(百岁老人) look at what they eat. Many people who live into their hundreds live in the Mediterranean (地中海), so their diet, which is high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and healthy fats like olive oil, gets a lot of attention. The diet has been linked to ahealthier older age, lower risk for heart disease, and even protection against memory loss.Education is related to a longer life. A 2012 report from the CDC‟s National Center for Health Statistics found that people with a bachelor‟s degree or higher live about ni ne years longer than people who don‟t graduate high school. James Smith, a health economist at the RAND Corporation, is also a supporter of the argument for staying in school for better life expectancy. His findings show education should be an even bigger factor than race and income. Educated people are more likely to land better jobs, plan for their future, and make healthier lifestyle choices.Being a hard worker doesn‟t necessarily mean job-stress will harm you. The Longevity (长寿)Study found that plenty of hard workers lived long lives. “Skeptics(怀疑者) may wonder if hard workers really are enjoying life.” the authors write, “We found that productive, hardworking people (even in old age) are not stressed or miserable, but tend to be happier, healthier, and more socially connected than their less productive peers.”Having a strong social group is associated with a longer life. We often turn to friends and family for support, and taking care of the people that matter to us may help us take better care of ourselves, some evidence shows. Some research even suggests that immune(免疫) function isimproved when we are around our friends, and that they help with stress management.Research shows that sitting for long period of time put people at risk for shorter lifespans and other health risks. A 2011 study found that each hour people spent sitting down and watching TV after age 25 was linked to 22 minutes from their overall life expectancy.4. The second paragraph mainly tells us that_______.A. Diet matters a lot to a long lifeB. People attach great importance to a long lifeC. Fruits and vegetables benefit healthD. Life styles play a role in health5. According to James Smith, which makes the greatest difference to a long life?A. RaceB. IncomeC. EducationD. Diet6. From the fourth paragraph, we know_____.A. Hard workers suffer from greater stressB. Less productive workers tend to be happier and healthierC. Hard workers are likely to enjoy a longer lifeD. Nobody doubts that hard workers really are enjoying life7. The passage is mainly about ________.A. diet and healthB. some discoveries on healthC. the value of good educationD. the secret of a happy lifeCSri Lanka is known as the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean”, and it is easy to see why. This little country never fails to please visitors.ArriveThe national airline is Sri Lankan Airlines, which flies from Colombo to London and a couple of other European cities. The country‟s main airport is Colombo Bandaranaike, located 29km north of the capital city. Why now?The best time to visit Sri Lanka‟s southern beaches is from November to April. So by going early in the season, you‟ll get the best weather. Also in November, Deepavali, known as “Diwali” or the “Festival of Lights”, is Sri Lanka‟s main religiousf estival, celebrated throughout the country. SeeThere is plenty to see in Sri Lanka. The ancient capital cities of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura are worth seeing, and so are many outstanding ruins. Other must-sees are the rock fortress (要塞) of Sigiriya, tow ering over the jungle as far as the eye can see, and Dambulla‟s cave temple, the country‟s largest and best preserved. Both are UNESCO World Heritage (遗产) Sites. Kandy is a picture-like town, which was the last stronghold of the Kandyan Kings. Today it is a cultural relic centre where age-old customs, arts, and crafts remain.DoSri Lanka owns about 1,600km of beautiful palm-shaded beaches as well as warm, pure seas and colorful coral reefs. You can explore the underwater world, and surfing and diving are available too. Away from the shore, wildlife is a big draw for Sri Lanka, and Yala National Park is one of the best places in the word to see wild animals including leopards (豹) and elephants.TasteSri Lanka is celebrated for its excellent food, with a particular emphasis on fresh fruit and vegetables on menus everywhere. Fish and seafood are a big part of the local diet.Did you know?Sri Lanka is known for its tea, but it i s also the world‟s largest producer and exporter of cinnamon(肉桂).8. Which of the following is a cultural relic centre of Sri Lanka?A. Anuradhapura.B. Kandy.C. Polonnaruwa.D. Colombo.9. If you want to know something about “Diwali”, you‟d b etter go there in .A. September.B. October.C. November.D. May.10. We learn from the passage that Sri Lanka .A. is in the Pacific OceanB. has only flights to LondonC. is the world‟s largest producer of teaD.is famo us for its excellent food11. The author wrote the article in order to .A. introduce the picturesque(如画的)landscape of Sri Lanka.B. let readers know what is famous for in Sri Lanka.C. make Sri Lanka well known throughout the world.D. let people get more travel information about Sri Lanka.DIf we are to help students develop reading skills in a foreign language, it is important to understand what is involved in the reading process itself. If we have a clear idea of how “good readers” read, either in their own or a foreign language, this will enable us to decide whether particular reading techniques are likely to help learners or not.In considering the reading process, it is important to distinguish(区别)between two quite separate activities reading for meaning (or “silent reading”) and reading aloud. Reading for meaning is the activity we normally engage in(从事于/参加)when we read books, newspapers, road signs, etc.; it is what you are doing as you read this text. It involves looking at sentences and understanding the message they convey, in other words “making sense” of a written text. It doesn‟tnormally involve saying the words we read, not even silently inside our heads.Reading aloud is a completely different activity; its purpose is not just to understand a text but to convey the information to someone else. It is not an activity we engage in very often outside the classroom; common examples are reading out parts of a newspaper article to a friend, or reading a notice to other people who can‟t see it. Obviously, reading aloud involves looking at a text, understanding it and also saying it. Because our attention is divided between reading and speaking, it is a much more difficult activity than reading silently; we often stumble and make mistakes when reading aloud in our own language, and reading aloud in a foreign language is even more difficult. When we read for meaning, we do not need to read every letter or every word, nor even every word in each sentence. This is because, if the text makes sense, we can guess much of what it says as we read it.12. The passage is mainly about ____________.A. reading skillsB. reading processesC. silent readingD. reading aloud13. The underlined word “stumble” in Paragraph 3 means ____________.A. step over something and fallB. walk with heavy movementsC. repeat something or pause for too long.D. speak in a fluent and confident way14. We can infer from the passage that the author will continue to ____________.A. discuss in detail how to read aloudB. introduce some more reading activitiesC. tell how good readers read in their own languageD. explain why we needn‟t say the words when reading for meaning15. We can conclude that ____________.A. reading silently is easier than reading aloudB. to understand a sentence, you have to read all the words in itC. silent reading involves looking at a text and saying the words silently to yourselfD. there‟s no difference between reading in one‟s own language and in a foreign one第二节阅读填空 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。

They're both now 100 years old, and a lot has changed in the past 84 years: their age changed: their appearance changed; but one thing has not—they still use the traditional way to contact.“I honestly strug gle to remember something, but I was talking to Celesta recently and I think it was something to do with an American school's scheme, Geoff said.” They matched us up with Americans for a pen pal relationship, and somehow I ended up with this letter from an American girl, and we've just kept corresponding(通信)ever since. S. government officials have approved meat that is grown from cells in a laboratory to be sold in restaurants and food stores.Companies have been developing “lab-grown” meat for years. But the California-based companies Upside Foods and Good Meat are the first to have their products approved by the Department of Agriculture. Chicken is the only “lab-grown” meat permitted in the United States. However, lab-grown meat from cattle, pigs and sheep might be available soon.Production of meat grown in a laboratory begins by taking cells from fertilized eggs. The cells are combined with nutrients that support their growth in steel tanks. Upside Foods’s lab-grown meat is created in large sheets, which are then formed into final products. Good Meat transforms cells into several chicken products.Lab-grown meat is different from plant-based meat such as Impossible Burgers. Those products are made from plant materials. Researchers consider lab-grown meat to be “real” meat. Company representatives say the lab-grown chicken seems like real meat. Amy Chen is Upside Foods’ chief operating officer. She told the Associated Press, “The most common response we get is, ‘Oh, it tastes like chicken.’”Upside Foods has stated that they only can produce 22, 680 kilograms of lab-grown meat a year. Officials expect the price of lab-grown meat to be about $44 per kilogram. At such a price, only rich people will be able to purchase lab-grown meat. Therefore, it will not be available in grocery stores any tim e soon. Restaurants are expected to begin serving “lab-grown” meat within two to five years. Experts say it might be available in supermarkets in 7 to 10 years.Ricardo San Martin, director of the Alt: Meat Lab told the Associated Press, “If some high-end or wealthy people want to eat this instead of a chicken, it’s good.” Then he added, “Will that mean you will feed chicken to poor people? I honestly don’t see it.”Supporters of lab-grown meat say it does not require killing or hurting animals. They also say it helps diminish and ease the effects that feeding animals and animal waste have on the environment. But Martin said that if too little is produced, and only a small number of people eat it, it will have little effect on the environment.8. What does the third paragraph mainly talk about on lab-grown meat?A.Its growing process. B.Its main component.C.Its drawback. D.Its characteristics.9. Why is lab-grown meat unpopular in grocery stores soon?A.Because it’s tasteless.B.Because it’s costly.C.Because it’s harmful.D.Because it’s unprofitable.10. B.Its popularity. C.Its output. D.Its potential.Bill Gates once said, “I choose a lazy person to do a hard job. Because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.” If the fact that these words were said by one of the most financially successful people in human history doesn't tell you something, I’m not sure what will. There is a lot to be said for taking the shortcut, as it can so often save you both time and effort that you didn’t actually need to waste. How often do you follow a path in a park, only to see the grass has been trampled (踩) on by so many corner-cutters that it’s formed its own little shortcut? These little shortcuts are called “desire paths”, as they basically tell the world that these are people who would go the way they want rather than the way others want them to. If there is a way for them to get where they need to be without wasting any extra effort, you can be sure they will go for it.We don’t always need to make things unnecessarily hard for ourselves, so working out an easier way is always worth celebrating. After all, taking shortcuts isn’t always a bad thing in life. You can be sure that the bicycle was invented by someone who was sick of walking, not to mention the invention of the wheel probably came about after someone decided they didn’t want to carry everything anymore. From finding a better way to go about a given task in work to figuring out a quicker route on the journey home, it all comes back to the idea of working smarter being better than working harder. You don't need to wait for a path to be carved out for you. If your mind has worked out a way to make things easier for yourself and get the job done quickly then go ahead and do it.12. Why are Bill Gates’words mentioned?A.To present a fact. B.To clarify a concept.C.To explain a rule. D.To introduce a topic.13. What is advised to do according to the author?A.Go your way rather than others’.B.Treat taking shortcuts properly.C.Learn from the lazy persons. D.Make things hard for yourself.14. What can be learnt from the inventions of bicycles and wheels?A.Those inventions satisfy the need of lazy people.B.Most greatest inventions were created by geniuses.C.Finding a better way to do things is their motivation.D.Any attempt to make things easier will surely be rewarded.15. What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Easier Said than Done B.Better Early than LateC.Work Smarter, Not Harder D.Take More Shortcuts in LifeHow to Care for Indoor PlantsIf you’ve ever had an indoor plant that’s quickly withered (枯萎), you might believe that you don’t have a green thumb or you’re not cut out for growing plants. 16 The truth is that anyone can be a good plant owner, and it really isn't complicated, we promise. In this article, we'll walk you through everything you need to know to care for your indoor plants, from watering to sunlight requirements to fertilizer.17 If your soil is either too dry or overwatered, it can damage the plant’s roots and prevent the plant from growing. In some cases under or over watering your plant can also kill it. Plants with thick leaves require more water than plants with leathery leaves. There is no specific frequency that works for all indoor plants. Instead, what you must do is determine what kind of plant you have, and follow guidelines on how often to water it by doing research on its specific type.Stick your finger in the soil to determine how wet it is below the surface. If you put your finger into the soil up to your joint, you can feel if your plant needs more water. If the soil feels damp, then you don’t need to water it. 18 If it feels dry then it’s likely you need to water it.Use water that is at room temperature. 68F or 20C is the best temperature to keep the water that you’re using to water your plants. 19 After that, you are supposed to take some actions to make the plants grow comfortably.Use a hand-held moisture (水分) meter to ensure water levels in your soil. 20 The mechanism explores the underlying soil to give you a reading on how hydrated (含水的) your soil is.“Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you’ll look back and realize they were the big things.” This ______ has stuck with me since the first time I read it.
