Americans are strong promoters of the thesis "man makes his destiny," where "destiny" places considerable emphasis on money, power, and life's comforts. Based on this criterion, not every life is obviously a success story. Some people feel left behind by the system. They are alienated(疏远), because by definition they see themselves as failures. Moreover, the structured work-oriented daily life in the USA may contribute to a setting in which many persons find themselves alone and lonely. This applies especially to traditional families in which men are employed and women raise children and take care of household chores. These families, especially the women, experience a critical turning point in their liveswhen their children, one-by-one, reach college age and leave home. A more permanent separation follows when the children start their own lives. The lively home of the past is suddenly transformed into a grave full of silence.Alienation, loneliness, boredom, monotony of routines can have "robotizing" influence on people. These personal situations are worsen in recent years by a perception of deeper problems in the system. The apparently democratic process - elections - can only change the representatives, but not this environment or system. The perception adds frustration, pessimism, and a sense of hopelessness. The high and rising rates of divorce, crime, homelessness, and alcohol and drug addiction in the USA may be studied from different perspectives, but collectively they represent the other side of the "American Dream." People who feel left behind and bored are motivated to find ways of passing time. Traditional solutions seem no longer satisfactory for all. Many people are attracted to astrology.1. Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Archaeology, like many academic words, comes from Greek and means, more or less, “th e study of old things”. So, it is really a part of the study of history. However, most historians use paper evidence, such as letters, paintings and photographs, but archaeologists (考古学家) learn from the objects left behind by the humans of long ago. Normally, these are the hard m aterials that don't break down or disappear very quickly—things like human bones and objects made from stone and metal. It is very unusual to find anything more than the hard evidence of history--normally, the b acteria (细菌) in the air eat away at soft materials, like bodies, clothes and things made of wo od. Occasionally, things are different. In 1984, two men made an amazing discovery while working in a bog called Lindow Mos s, in the north of England. A bog is a very wet area of earth, with a lot of plants growing in it. It can be like a very big and very thick vegetable soup—walk in the wrong place and you can sink and disappear forever. The men were working when one of them saw something stic king out—a human foot! Naturally, the men called the police, who then found the rest of the bo dy. Was it a case of murder? Possibly--but it was a death nearly two thousand years old. The two men had found a body from the time of the Roman invasion of Britain. Despite being so old, this body had skin, muscles, hair and internal organs—the scientists who examined him we re able to look inside the man's stomach and find the food that he had eaten for his last meal! Why was this man so well preserved? (76) It was because he was in a very watery enviro nment, safe from the bacteria that need oxygen to live. Also, the water in the bog was very ac idic. The acid preserved the man's skin in the way that animal skin is preserved for leather coa ts and shoes. How did he die? Understandably, archaeologists and other scientists wanted to know more about the person that they called,“Lindow Man”. (77) His hands and fingernails suggested that he hadn't done heavy manual work in his life—he could have been a rich man. They found tha t he hadn't died by accident. The archaeologists believe that he was sacrificed to three different gods.1. Which language does the word “archaeology”come f rom?A. French.B. Greek.C. Roman.D.

There are lots of examples to illustrate how ethical the upper-class are, such as the philanthropists Wall. One of them, for example, was the great Italian artist, Leonardo Da Vinci. In the sixteenth century he made designs for machines that would fly, but they were never built.Throughout history, other less famous men had wanted to fly. An example was a man in England 800 years ago. He made a pair of wings from chicken feathers. Then he fixed them to his body and jumped into air from a tall building. He did not fly very far. Instead, he fell to the ground and broke every bone in his body. The first real steps took place in France, in 1783. Two brothers, the Montgolfiers, made a very large "hot air balloon". They knew that hot air rises. Why not fill a balloon with it? The balloon was made of cloth and paper. In September of that year, the King and Queen of France came to see the balloon. They watched it carry the very first air passengers into the sky. The passengers were a sheep and a chicken. We do not know how they felt about the trip. But we do know that the trip lasted eight minutes and that the animals landed safely. Two months later, two men did the same thing. They rose above Paris in a balloon of the same kind. Their trip lasted twenty-five minutes and they traveled about eight kilometers.(1)、Leonardo Da Vinci made designs for flying machines.单选题A. A. A:TB. B. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase.Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. TranslationPart I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Languages are remarkably complex and wonderfully complicated organs of culture. They contain the quickest and the most efficient means of communicating within their respective cultures. To learn a foreign language is to learn another culture. In the words of a poet and philosopher, “As many languages as one speaks, so many lives one lives.” A culture and its language are as necessary as brain and body; while one is a part of the other, neither can function without the other. In learning a foreign language, the best beginning would be starting with the nonlanguage elements of the language: its gestures, its body language, etc. Eye contact is extremely important in English. Direct eye contact leads to understanding, or, as the English saying goes, seeing eye-to-eye. We can never see eye-to-eye with a native speaker of English until we have learned to look directly into his eyes.1.The best title for this passage is______.A.Organs of CultureB.Brain and BodyC.Looking into His EyesD.Language and Culture正确答案:D2.According to this passage, the best way to learn a foreign language is______.A.to read the works of poets and philosophersB.to find a native speaker and look directly into his eyesC.to begin by learning its body languageD.to visit a country where you can study正确答案:C3.According to this passage, gestures are______.A.spoken wordsB.a non-language elementsC.pictures in a languageD.written language正确答案:B4.“As many languages as one speaks, so many lives...” means______.A.if one learns many foreign languages, one will have a better understanding of his own languageB.life is richer and more interesting if one knows several languagesC.no matter how many languages one knows, one can never know more than one’s own cultureD.if a person speaks only one language, he will live a very happy life正确答案:B5.Which of the following doesn’t share the same meaning with the others?A.Signs.B.Gestures.C.Efficiency.D.Body language. CTrees are useful to man in three very important ways: they provide him with wood and other products; they give him shade; and they help to prevent droughts (干旱) and floods. Unfortunately, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. Two thousand years ago a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire (帝国). It gained the empire, but, without its trees, its soil became hard and poor. When the empire fell to pieces, the home country found itself threatened by flood and starvation. Even though a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees, it is difficult for it to persuade villagers to see this. The villagers want wood to cook their food with; and they can earn money by selling wood. They are usually too lazy to plant and look after the trees. So, unless the government has a good system of control, or can educate the people, the forests will slowly disappear. This does not only mean that the villagers’ children and grandchildren will have fewer trees. The results are even more serious, for where there are trees their roots break the soil up, allowing the rain to sink in, and also bind the soil, thus preventing its being washed a-way easily. But where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away from the surface, causing flood.6.What is the most important function of trees?A.Providing fuel.B.Offering shade.C.Preventing natural disaster.D.Providing wood. C7.What eventually happened to the empire according to the passage?A.Its people died of hunger.B.It fell to pieces.C.It became a giant empire.D.It built many ships with wood. B8.It is implied in the passage that the villagers______.A.want a plentiful supply of treesB.want firewood badlyC.just want to get moneyD.don’trealize the importance of trees正确答案:D9.The role of trees is to______.A.loosen soilB.keep soil in positionC.harden soilD.both A and B正确答案:D10.What is the passage mainly concerned with?A.The benefits of trees.B.Trees and soil protection.C.The various uses of trees.D.Different attitudes toward trees. AAdam Smith was the first person to see the importance of the division of the labor. He gave us an example of the process by which pins were made in England. “One man draws out the wire, another strengthens it, a third cuts it, a fourth points it, and a fifth gives it a head. Just to make the head requires two or three different operations. The work of making pins is divided into about eighteen different operations, which in some factories are all performed by different people, though inothers the same man will sometimes perform two or three of them. Ten men, Smith said, in this way, turned out twelve pounds of pins a day or about 4, 800 pins a worker. But if all of them had worked separately and independently without division of labor, they certainly could not have made twenty pins in a day and not even one. There can be no doubt that division of labor is an efficient way of organizing work. Fewer people can make more pins. Adam Smith saw this, but he also took it for granted that division of labor is itself responsible for economic growth and development and it accounts for the difference between expanding economies and those that stand still. But division of labor adds nothing new, it only enables people to produce more of what they already have.11.According to the passage, Adam Smith was the first person to______.A.take advantage of the physical laborB.introduce the division of labor into EnglandC.understand the effects of the division of laborD.explain the bad causes of the division of labor正确答案:C12.Adam Smith saw that the division of labor______.A.enabled each worker to design pins more quicklyB.increased the possible output per workerC.increased the number of people employed in factoriesD.improved the quality of pins produced正确答案:B13.Adam Smith mentioned the number 4, 800 in order to______.A.show the advantages of the old labor systemB.stress how powerful the individual worker wasC.show the advantages of the division of laborD.stress the importance of increased production正确答案:C14.According to the writer, Adam Smith’s mistake was in believing that the division of labor______.A.was an efficient way of organizing workB.was an important development in methods of productionC.finally led to economic developmentD.increased the production of existing goods正确答案:C15.According to the author, which one of the following is NOT true?A.Division of labor can enable fewer people to make more pins.B.Division of labor helps people to produce more of what they already have.C.Division of labor is by no means responsible for economic growth.D.Division of labor is an efficient way of organizing work.正确答案:CPart II V ocabulary and Structure (30%)Directions: In this part, there are 30 incomplete sentences.
