But passing a painful kidney(肾)stone is not. The process is painful and can take a long time. But American researchers have found that a roller coaster ride just might help those suffering from a kidney stone. They say such rides help patients pass the stones with a 70 percent success rate.David Wartinger led the study. He found that where the person sits on the roller coaster can make a big difference. He said, "In the pilot study, sitting in the last car of the roller coaster showed about a 64 percent success rate, while sitting in the first few cars only had a 16 percent success rate. "When it comes to passing kidney stones, not all roller coasters are equal. The researchers used 174 kidney stones of different shapes, sizes and weights to see if each model worked on the same ride and on two other roller coasters. They found that Big Thunder Mountain was the only one that worked. The other two roller coasters both failed the test. Wartinger said the other rides were too fast and too violent. The movement forced the stones against the side of the kidney. He said that the ideal roller coaster is rough and quick with some twists and turns. It also mattered where the stones were located in the kidney. The researchers found that stones located in the upper part of the kidney model were passed 100 percent.Wartinger thinks roller coaster rides could really be used as an effective measure. He said that a yearly ride on a roller coaster could even prevent stones from developing. "You need to pay attention to the warnings before going on a roller coaster, " he said " If you have a kidney stone, but are otherwise healthy and meet the requirements of the ride, you can absolutely try it. "He adds that it's definitely a lower cost alternative to other treatments. And riding a roller coaster is definitely more interesting!31.What might passing kidney stones be like?A.Uncomfortable.B.Quick.C.Enjoyable.D.Exciting. 32.Roller coaster treatment works better ________.A.when the person sits in the first car of a roller coaster.B.when the stone is forced against the side of the kidney.C.when the stone is located in the lower part of the kidney.D.when the person rides rough and fast roller coasters with twists and turns.33.What's probably the advantage of riding a roller coaster?A.It can prevent the development of kidney stones.B.It can help anyone besides those with kidney stones.C.It can prevent danger because of its clear warning.D.It can apply to everyone with kidney stones effectively.34.What attitude does Wartinger have towards roller coasters for people having a kidney stone? A growing body of research has suggested that poor sleep quality is linked to an increased risk of obesity (肥胖症). But a new study found that it’s not the sleep loss that leads to obesity, but rather that overweight can cause poor sleep. The researchers discovered their findings in a very small worm, called C.elegans.Study co-author David Raizen stressed that while these findings in worms may not translate directly to humans, C.elegans offers a good model for studying humans' sleep. Like all other animals that have nervous systems, they need sleep. But unlike humans, who have complex neural circuitry (神经回路) and are difficult to study, a C.elegans has only 302 nerve cells, one of which scientists know for certain is a sleep regulator. In humans, people who get fewer than six hours of sleep per night are more likely to be obese. Moreover, starvation in humans, fruit flies, and worms has been shown to affect sleep, indicating that it is regulated, at least in part, by nutrient availability. However, the way in which sleeping and eating work in tandem (协同地) has remained unclear. The researchers genetically changed C.elegans to “turn off" a nerve cell that controls sleep. These worms could still eat, breathe, and reproduce, but they lost their ability to sleep. With this nerve cell turned off,the researchers saw a severe drop in ATP levels, which is the body's energy currency. “That suggests that sleep is an attempt to conserve energy; it's not actually causing the loss of energy,"Raizen explained. The researchers knocked out the KIN-29 gene to create sleepless worms, and the mutant (突变的) C.elegans accumulated much fat. They assumed that the KIN-29 mutants did not sleep is because they were unable to release their fat.To test this guess, the researchers again controlled the KIN-29 mutant worms, this time expressing a chemical substance that freed their fat. With that operation, the worms were again able to sleep.35.What did the new study focus on?A.The risk of suffering obesity.B.The way our body consumes energy.C.The link between obesity and sleep loss.D.The cause for poor sleep and obesity.36.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A.Obesity.B.Nutrition.C.Starvation.D.Sleep.37.Why did the researchers turn off one nerve cell of the C.elegans?A.To monitor its sleep quality.B.To regulate the change of ATP.C.To confirm the function of sleep.D.To find out factors affecting energy conservation.38.What might lead to obese people's sleeping problem according to the researchers?A.That their body fat fails to be freed normally.B.That their ATP level may be greatly raised.C.That their brain signals for sleeping go wrong.D.That their KIN-29 gene is knocked out quickly.参考答案1.C2.A3.B4.A5.D6.A7.C8.B9.C10.C11.B12.A13.D14.C15.A16.C17.B18.B19.D20.A【分析】本文是说明文。

Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia(百科全书), is the largest encyclopedia ever. An encyclopedia is a collection of informative articles about____1____ (variety) things. Encyclopedias used to be printed____2____ books. Now,they are mostly found online.“Wiki” is an Internet term____3____ (mean) “a website that can be edited by the public”. It comes from “wikiwiki”, a Hawaiian word for “quick”. Two Americans, Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, created Wikipedia in 2001. It is now the fifth-most____4____ (visit) website on the Internet. It has about 6 million articles in 300 languages and is visited by billions of people each day,______5______ want to find information on just about anything science, math, languages, art, culture, and company histories.Wikipedia employs____6____ open editing model. Except for a small number of pages, anyone can edit articles, anonymously(匿名地) or with a user account. Editing is unpaid, although Wikipedia does employ a small staff. Sunlight reflected off the snow can make it hard to see, and UV rays can even damage your eyesight. Special colored lenses also createcontrast, so your whole path won’t look like one flat expanse of whiteness.____11____ Olympic speed skaters, meanwhile, are racing inside on smooth ice. ____12____According to NBC Olympics, glasses can increase visibility on indoor tracks, too. ____13____ And while the ice may look smooth from a distance, those sharp blades can kick up ice chips that could pose problems if they end up in your eyes. In the event of a crash, shatter-proof glasses also protect skaters’ eyes from errant blades and body parts.____14____ Shot-track speed skaters (who race around a roughly 11-meter track) can go as fast as 30 miles per hour or more, and long-track speed skaters (whose track is 400 meters long) sometimes hit about 35 miles per hour. The wind resistance generated by such speed- in a chilly arena—is enough to make any skater’s eyes start streaming with tears. Picture leaning your head out the window of a car that’s going around 35 miles per hour on a cold day: You’d probably want to be wearing glasses, too. That said, glasses aren’t a requirement. ____15____ Belgium’s Stijn Desmet, for example, has raced in Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games without eyewear, as has China’s Zhang Chutong. A.How do they wear glasses?B.So why do they wear glasses?C.Some skiers are afraid of the sunlight.D.Some skaters’ lenses are tinted to help with that.E.You’ll occasionally see speed skaters with uncovered visages.F.Not to mention that eyewear shields your eyes from any snow you displace.G.But the biggest reason speed skaters opt for eyewear just might be their speed.03(2021·重庆巴蜀中学高二期末)It was a method favoured by the inventor Thomas Edison and the artist Salvador Dali. Waking from a nap exactly at the point before deep sleep in an effort to inspire creativity.Edison held a metal ball in his hand so that if he nodded off he would drop it and the sound would wake him. For Dali, it was a key landing on a plate. Now scientists have found that they might have been onto something.Researchers at the Paris Brain Institute studied people’s ability to find a hidden rule in a maths puzzle. Identifying the trick would make solving the problem far simpler but to do so required thinking creatively. The scientists found that participants who had been woken just before falling into a deep sleep, using a technique like that used by Edison and Dali, were more likely to find the shortcut. This “twilight zone” is known as non-rapid eye movement sleep stage 1, or N1. Scientists described it like an exaggerated form of mind-wandering, where dream-like thoughts fill the mind. It is thought that as people start to disengage (脱离) from their environment they can “freely watch their minds wander, while maintaining their ability to identify creative sparks (火花)”.For the study 103 people were given a maths problem to solve. To reach the final answer they had to apply the rules step by step but, unknown to them, a “hidden rule” would allow them to bypass most of the steps and get to the solution much more quickly. The results showed that 83 percent of those in the N1 group had found the shortcut, compared with 31 percent in the group who were awake and 14 percent of those in a deep sleep.Researchers conclude that the brain activity common to the twilight zone between sleep and wakefulness set off creative sparks. “Although the neural mechanisms (神经机制) involved are not yet known, our findings suggest that there is a creative sweet spot within the twilight zone,” said Dr Thomas Andrillon, co-author of the study.16.Why did the author mention “a metal ball” and “a key” in Paragraph 2?A.To clarify a method.B.To explain a theory.C.To present a concept.D.To make a comparison.17.What can we learn about “the twilight zone” from the text?A.It prevents your mind from wandering.B.It determines what your dreams will be like.C.It is known as rapid eye movement sleep stage.D.It is a state of being half asleep and half awake.18.What does “the shortcut” in Paragraph 5 refer to?A.The maths problem.B.The final answer.C.The hidden rule.D.The added step.19.What attitude may Dr Thomas Andrillon hold to the technique used by Edison and Dali? A.Doubtful.B.Critical.C.Indifferent.D.Favorable.04(2022·重庆巴蜀中学高三阶段练习)Some bees seem to be able to choose whether to become a worker or a queen — but thousands of competitors for the throne (王位) are killed in each hive (蜂巢).About one-fifth of all Melipona beecheii bee larvae (幼虫) start to develop as queens, but the colony accepts only one. The rest are attacked by strong-jawed workers.Biologists suspected that colonies of this species overproduce queens as an evolutionary strategy to take over other hives. But it now seems that it is simply a result of the “selfishness” of individual larvae, to the detriment of the whole colony, says Caliari Oliveira at KU Leuven in Belgium.Unlike most bee colonies where workers select one larva to become the only queen by feeding it a special diet, the M. beecheii colony is spending a lot of resources to produce new individuals, and then all they do afterwards is waste those resources and kill the queens. “This is a very goodexample of the tragedy of the commons, when a chase for personal gain harms society,” says Caliari Oliveira. In the past, researchers suggested that M. beecheii workers were feeding a chemical called geraniol (香叶醇) to the future queens. Oliveira and his colleagues wondered if the bees chose so many queens in order to spread the colony’s DNA into other hives. To investigate further, they took genetic samples of queens and workers from 25 free -ranging M. beecheii colonies. In the lab, they also gave higher doses of geraniol to more than 600 larvae. To their surprise, they discovered that extra geraniol didn’t affect larval development, so workers weren’t controlling queen production after all. Genetic analysis revealed that the DNA of each hive remained 100 per cent consistent. The new study “settles a bit of a controversy” about Melipona bees, says Christoph Grueter at the University of Bristol, UK. But it doesn’t offer a new explanation for how the larvae “decide” to become queens. “For me, this is still one of the biggest puzzles in biology.”20.What does the underlined phrase “to the detriment of” mean in Paragraph 3?A.Taking charge of.B.Falling victim to.C.Providing support for.D.Causing damage to.21.Why did the researchers feed extra geraniol to the larvae?A.To test their assumption.B.To simplify their research.C.To apply new techniques.D.To confirm previous findings.22.What does Christoph Grueter think of the new study?A.It is fruitless.B.It is innovative.C.It is insufficient.D.It is satisfactory.23.What is the main idea of the text?A.Some bee colonies adopt effective evolutionary strategies.B.Some bee colonies have to kill thousands of wannabe queens.C.Some bee species overproduce queens to conquer other hives.D.Some bee species rely on a chemical to spread the colony’s DNA.05(2022·江苏南通·二模)People who regularly sleep for six hours or less each night in middle age are more likely to develop dementia than those who routinely manage seven hours, according to a major study into the disease.Researchers found a 30% greater risk of dementia in those who during their 50s, 60s and 70s consistently had a short night's sleep, regardless of other risk factors such as heart condition and poor mental health.Sabia, an author of the study at the university of Paris and her colleagues analyzed survey data from University College London's Whitehall study, which launched in 1985 and followed the health and lifestyles of more than 10,000 British volunteers. The French team focused on nearly 8,000participants who self-reported their sleep patterns.During 25 years of follow-up. 521 participants developed dementia, with most diagnosed in their late 70s. Writing in Nature Communications, the scientists described how those who routinely got six hours of sleep or less each night in their 50s and 60s were 30% more likely to develop dementia than those who typically managed seven hours. The study does not prove that sleeping too little causes dementia, since sleep loss itself may be one of the earliest symptoms of the disease. But some scientists believe the results strengthen evidence that continuous poor sleep may at least contribute to the disease. The first pathological changes that lead to dementia occur one to two decades before the disease becomes obvious, as sticky proteins called amyloid build up in the brain. When the 1985 Whitehall study first assessed the sleep of volunteers who later developed dementia, this process had probably not started. This meant that if they were sleeping too little, it was unlikely to have been caused by dementia-related brain changes.“It strengthens the evidence that poor sleep in middle age could cause or worsen dementia in later life,” said Dr. Liz Coulthard, a consultant senior lecturer in dementia neurology. “It makes sense to take measures to improve sleep such as going outside during daylight hours to help maintain the natural rhythms that promote good sleep, avoiding too much alcohol or caffeine, particularly before bed, and finding a bedtime routine that works for you.”24.What risk factor for dementia does the passage focus on?A.Sleep loss.B.Age.C.Poor mental health.D.Heart condition. 25.How did French scientists get the research findings?A.By making a comparison.B.By monitoring sleep patterns.C.By interviewing British volunteers.D.By analyzing previous survey data.26.In what tone do the scientists talk about the research?A.Casual.B.Doubtful.C.Negative.D.Cautious. 27.What is the purpose of the last paragraph?A.To give examples.B.To collect proofs.C.To offer suggestions.D.To present arguments.参考答案:1.various2.as3.meaning4.visited5.who6.an7.freely8.organization9.found10.difficulties【解析】这是一篇说明文,本文介绍了维基百科的创办历程、现状以及面临的一些挑战。
