词块教学法在商务英语信函写作教学中的应用
青春岁月商务英语信函写作是以经济生活为反映对象,以语言文字为表达手段,以文章为信息传播的载体。
商务英语信函教学通过介绍商务实务中不同流程的英文业务函件、电子邮件的写作格式和内容,使学生熟悉商务业务中各个环节的常用语言和习惯用法,提高商务业务能力。
商务英语信函主要体现在措辞、句型、修饰手段、语篇结构等语言体式上。
它要求学生不仅要具备英语语言的基础知识,还要熟悉商务知识,能自如地运用英语从事商务活动。
在商务英语中有些言语程式或行话出现频率很高,如:in fav or of,we are in receipt o f y our letter…等。
这些形式较固定、搭配意义较稳定、使用的语境较固定的言语程式或行话被称之为“词块”。
一、词块教学法许多语言学者都对词块在语言学习过程中的作用进行过研究,其中有Becker(1975,idiosyn cratic chunk s)and Natting er and Decarrico(1992,lex ical phrases)。
M ichael L ewis1993年在其出版的The Lexical Appro ach中提出了词块教学法(Lexical Chunk Ap proach),为词块教学法奠定了理论基础,使词块的作用逐步引起人们的重视这一方法后来被广泛应用于语言教学的各个领域。
简单地说,词块就是词与词的组合,是一个多词的单位。
其结构较固定,可以做公式化的反复操练,一般指出现频率较高,形式和意义较固定的大于单词的结构。
根据常用的词块分类方法(L ew is,1993;Zernick&Dyer, 1987),商务函电英语词块也可分为四种:一是单词/多词词汇,如“firm o ffer”;二是习惯搭配/短语限制语/有所变化的词块,如“an o ffer subject to…”,这类词块通常是一些可填空的不太长的词块;三是惯用句型/惯用表达式,如“Enclosed please find…”,这类词块主要是指读者可以整体储存的语言构块,属于商务英语中的套语;四是句子框架/句型框架/可以推广的包含固定形式的词块,如“We regret that…”,这类词块主要为表达某个概念提供相对固定的句子框架。

1.2商务英语信函特点:商务英语信函反应的是经济活动,因此商务英语信函写作与普通英语写作是不同的,差别主要体现在措辞、句型、修饰手段、语篇结构等都有自己固定的格式和用法。
(1)专业性强:商务英语信函中出现的语言形式、词汇以及内容等均与商务知识密切相关,承载的是商务理论和商务实践等方面的信息。

例如:We look forward to sending your shipment as soon as we receive your payment;We are unable to send your shipment until we receive proof of your payment这两句话虽然意思一样,但随着look forward to 和are unable to的不同使用,两个句子传递出来的感觉就很不一样。
第一句让人听了舒服,乐于接受;而第二句就显得过于直接、生硬,不利于别人接受。
2商务英语信函中的词块基于以上对商务英语信函特点的分析,会发现,商务英语信函中经常使用的词汇、短语、句式随着其长期地使用已经变得固定,人们要进行信函写作时会自然地去使用它们、或是套用它们。
这些固定存在的语言形式实际就是词块理论中提到的词块。
要流畅、准确地进行信函写作就离不开对这些词块的学习。
2.1什么是词块?词块最早的提出者是Becker,他认为词块是集功能和形式于一体、兼具词汇和语法特征的语言构块。
Nattinger和Decaricco的著作中也提到是各种各样的词汇组块使人们能进行流利地表达,因此他们认为语言表达的流利程度不取决于学习者大脑中储存了多少语法规则,而取决于储存了多少词汇组块。
Lewis在The Lexical Approach(1993)一书中也提到,在自然语言中大量存在的整体存储、直接提取、无需语法生成和分析的词块是构成语言的基础,语言应用能力的提高应是通过扩大学习者的词块来实现的。
2.2商务英语信函中的词块(1)单词和多词词汇(words and/or poly-words)。
该类词块包括商务过程本身所涉及到的一些专业性概念、术语和缩略词等。
如:),surcharges(附加费),proforma invoice(形式发票),irrevocable letter of credit(不可撤销信用证),clearance sale(清仓削价销售),letter of credit(信用证),CIF(到岸价格),FOB (离岸价格),CBD(货到付款)。
这类词块通常也被称为专有名词,需要像单词一样,背诵,作为整体来理解和运用。
(2)习惯搭配或固定短语:这类词块通常指一些不太长的短语,如:for your information,for your reference,for our file,with reference to等。
(3)第三种,惯用句型或惯用表达方式(conventionalized or institutionalized expressions)。

由于词块是较大的词汇构块,有时甚至需要记忆整个句子,所以,一次性记住的单词量会因此而大大增加。
另一方面,对于学生而言,并不会因为记忆量的增大就使记忆的难度加大。
首先因为词块是使用在特定的语境中的,所以记忆时比脱离语境单独背词汇更容易记住,且不易忘记。
其次,它有较高的准确性。
由于词块的构成成分之间受到语法结构和语义搭配的双重限制,在使用时可以从记忆库中即取即用。
即便是一些内部结构有所变化的句型框架,其中的变化也是非常有限的,比全部由自己造句所需的努力小得多,因此犯错误的可能性也小得多,大大提高了语言使用的准确性。
(2)词块教学可以避免语域语境使用不当。
使用词块为单位来学习商务英语函电中的专业词汇,最直接的功效就是可以避免不恰当地使用词汇的语域语境,因为词块具有较强的语用功能,它们往往只能适用在某些语境之中。
例如,在撰写调查资信状况时,我们通常使用诸如“confidential,in confidence,in absolute/strict/the strictest confidence”的保密承诺词块。
又如,在报盘/还盘时,写信人经常使用以下词块:offer,firm offer,non-firm offer,counter-offer,quotation,acceptance,subject to our confirmation 等词块或习惯搭配。

(3)词块教学可以避免词汇选择错误。
把词块作为词汇的最小单位来进行教学,通过记忆这些词块,学生可熟知商务领域中大多数专用的固定表达,使用时,整个词块跃然于脑海中,在写信时也就不会再选错词,学生语言应用的准确性得到提高。
例如,“a clean documentary letter of credit,prevailing price,freight forwarder ”等习惯搭配放到一起来学,使用时直接提取,不用再思前想后,写信效率也可得到大大提高。
