The shipping containers we provide are of two sizes, namely 10ft and 20 ft respectively. They can be opened at both ends, thus making it possible to load and unload at the same time. For carrying goods liable to be spoiled by damp or water they have the great advantage of being both water-tight and air-tight. Containers can be loaded and locked at the factory, if necessary. Pilferage is therefore impossible.Being temperature-controlled, our containers are provided for any cargo that needs special care. This lends its full benefit in shipping. There is also a saving on freight charges, when separate consignments intended for the same port of destination are carried in one container, and an additional saving on insurance because of lower premium charged for container-shipped goods. We enclose a copy of our tariff and look forward to receiving your instructions. Yours faithfully,Spike ChungTry to make out letters on enquiries and replies for information on shipping space, freight rates, frequency of sailing, charter hire, and other shipping services.Unit 3 Ocean Freight RatesTeaching Aims:Ocean freight rates may be broadly divided into tramp rates and liner freight rates. Prior to loading, the Lloyd’s surveyor at port of Yokohama had carried out a thorough inspection on the above spaces. During the voyage, we also paid special attention to the efficient ventilation for the aforesaid cargo. In view of the above, we feel sure that the damage you alleged must be attributable to the inherent nature of the commodity, which was beyond our control. So, we cannot be held responsible therefor. In addition, we wish to take this opportunity to bring it to your attention that damage of this nature would be unavoidable should shippers make no improvement on packing. We hope this will receive your full understanding.Lesson 9Ex. We have to remind you that should the goods coming forward for shipment be in damaged condition, no any clean bill of lading is to be issued.3. The cost of repair thus incurred is to be fully for their account. We hope this will receive your great attention and thank you in advance.2. This is to advise you that at 0700 a.m. this morning the above captioned vessel, while being pushed getting alongside by 2 tugs, struck the pier at her poop. After the occurrence the port authority immediately called for relevant engineering technicians to examine the lower structure of the pier and in the meantime took photo-record of the scene.Findings of investigation show that owing to dash the wall of the pier was found with 2 cracks in it, the cemented cover fell off and 2 pillars at the pier were slightly damaged. The port authority decreed that the owners be liable for the compensation of USD30,000. Nevertheless the master of M.V. “A” was of the following opinion: This accident was solely due to the fault on the part of the tugs in that their walkie-talkies were out of function in berthing communication and the tugs failed to follow pilot’s order to stop their engines immediately. Under such circumstances there is no reason to hold the owners responsible for such an unfair compensation. So far this matter is still under negotiation and we’ll keep you informed of any news when available.Lesson 13Ex. We shall, on behalf of the China Import and Export Corporation, settle the accounts with you in accordance with the Contract of Sale No.2FEE09019D. Charges should be determined as per the terms of the Contract of Sale except for daily rate of despatch / demurrage being in accordance with the stipulations of Charter Party, which please appreciate.Enclosed herewith you will find two copies of Statement of Account from my company. Please reply as soon as you can if no objection.Lesson14Ex. The vessel, at about 5 hours of the occurrence, managed to refloat herself and resume her voyage. It was stated in the Master’s Report that in view of the nature of the accident and no leakage being found upon his careful examination on fuel tanks and bilges of the ship, he felt sure that the seaworthiness of the ship was unimpaired, now she being en route to the port of destination. However, the Owner feared that damages might have been done to the ship in the course of refloating and therefore he declared General Average. Please bring the foregoing circumstances to the attention of Charterers and request them to issue G. A. Bonds to Master at the port of discharge, and also ask them to advise us of the name and address of cargo insurers so that we can require the latter to provide Letters of Guarantee in a usual form.Lesson 15Ex. 11. CY/CY container 16. an outstanding claim 17. settle a claim in an amicable wayEx. IV1. It is obvious that the shortage of the arrived cargo was due to the negligence in stowing the container. Such shortage would have been avoided had due attention been paid in stowage. So we reserve the right to claim therefor.2. Having closely studied the relevant documents, we are of the opinion that the claim cannot be accepted in the light of the following grounds.3. As regards the claim that you lodged against us for wet damage to the goods under the B/L No.HF175, we would like to suggest that we pay the claim on the basis of 25% of the loss you sustained and that is the greatest compromise we can make. If you insist on the original claim, we shall propose that the case be referred to arbitration.4. As the eight over-landed cases of bicycle parts were largely pilfered while in your warehouse, and were thus not enough to offset those short-landed at Rotterdam. We, therefore, had to pay to the consignees USD1,200 for settling the case. Please debit the payment to my company’s account.5. Clearly, this damage took place in transit while the goods were under your custody. Therefore we are of the opinion that you should be held liable for the loss amounting to USD2500.Lesson 17 EX III4.
• Dear Sirs, • Letter of Credit No.3524 issued by the Bank of New South Wales has duly arrived. On perusal, we find that transhipment and partial shipment are not allowed. • As direct steamers to your port are few and far between, we have to ship via HongKong more often than not. As to partial shipment, it would be to our mutual benefit if we could ship immediately whatever is ready instead of waiting for the whole shipment to be completed. Therefore, we have sent you an email this afternoon, asking you to amend your L/C to read “Partialshipments and transhipment allowed”. • We hope you will see to it that the amendment is made without delay. • Yours faithfully,

As you are well aware, the weight of these heavy li fts is far beyond the lifting capacity of the ship’s fac ilities. Please contact the Harbour Administration as soon as possible with regard to arranging the discharge of theses goods by shore cranes5.码头工人这样搬运货物的方式,货物发生混票的情况是不可避免的.It is inevitable that the goods will be mixed up if the stevedores handle them in such a manner.

Your letter Ref. BK-425 dated 25th February has been duly received. We learn with much regret that 150 out of 2000 cases of oranges under B/L No.184 carried by us were damaged on the voyage from Yokohama to Vancouver. The parcel/consignment in question was stowed in No.2 lower hold and tween-deck which, prior to loading, were thoroughly examined by the Lloyd’s Su rveyor at Yokohama. The coolness and ventilation in the compartments came up fully to the standards of transit, which was to the entire satisfaction of the Surveyor and shipper.During the voyage, we also paid special attention to the effective ventilation of the said cargo. From the above, we may conclude that the alleged damage to oranges must have been caused by their inherent nature and this is a matter beyond our control. Therefore, we are not to be held responsible for this damage. In addition, we would take this opportunity to bring it to your notice that the recurrence of such damage will be inevitable in the future unless the shipper improves the packing thereof. We trust we shall have your full understanding in this connection.信函5.Stained DamageI wish to acknowledge receipt of your letter dated 3rd of this month, in which l note that 3 bales of the subject parcel were landed stained by oil.The parcel in question was shipped at Hong Kong in No.3 Hatch tween-deck at forward end against the bulkhead, and at Singapore when we were loading hardened wax destined for London, we could find no alternative but stow it in the same hatch in proximity to the bales of cotton sheeting in question with careful protection of mats and wooden dunnage in ample quantity. At the time of discharge of this goods we found that during the voyage in hot climate at this time of the year, the wax had become soft and semi-liquid, and part of it leaked out, finding its way through the dunnage mats and wooden boards on the deck to the said bales. After discharge in the shed, l inspected damage to the cargo and found that the damage was not of a serious nature as stated in your letter, but materially infinitesimal, which please take note.We regret the trouble caused and thank you for your kind arrangement for a settlement.1.Agent’s Enquiry for Sailing and Freight RatesWe shall shortly have ready for shipment from Liverpool to Alexandria four cases of crockery. Each case measures 4*4*3 feet weighing about 150 lbs.Would you please quote your rate for freight and send us details of your sailing and the time usually taken for the voyage. We understood that M..S. Merchant Prince is due to sail on 25th July, but we should like an earlier sailing if possible.2.Shipping Company’s ReplyThank you for your enquiry of 30th June 1999We wish to inform you that the M. S. Princess Victoria will be loading at No.2 Dock from 8th to 13th July inclusive. Following her is the M. S. Merchant Prince, loading at No.5 Dock from 20th to 24th July inclusive. The voyage to Alexandria normally takes fourteen days. The freight rate for crockery packed in wooden cases is £57.50 per ton.We shall be glad to book your four cases for either of these vessels and enclose our shippingform. Please complete and return it as soon as you can.3..Stowage of NewsprintWe have received your letter of 19th December, also a copy of North Pacific Mills’ letter dated 28th November together with your letter of 1st December in reply thereto. We note from the above correspondence that the North Pacific Mills complained that some inconvenience had been caused in their recent order as a result of mixed stowage of Hong Kong and Kobe orders at the loading portVancouver, and they could not transship cargo for different ports in separate hatches. As you are well aware, many factors affected the stowage of the above-mentioned newsprint at Vancouver, and it is hardly possible to arrange stowage of these particular commodity in separate hatches, allotted time of delivery of this consignment to the vessel, and amounts, description, and destination of other cargo to be loaded etc., and we anticipate no difficulty in arranging the stowage desired if the condition is favorable. While we may not be able to stow the whole lot of the Hong Kong newsprint in one hatch, it should be possible to separate it in some way so that it would not become mixed with other cargo when discharged at Kobe.In this connection, we should be pleased if you would kindly instruct the Vancouver Agents and Terminal Dock Co. so that they deliver and load the newsprint in question in conformity as far as possible with the request of the North Pacific Mills.Your prompt attention to this matter will be appreciated.4.Mix-up of Tiles shippedWe have received your letter of 28th July concerning the stowage of tiles from Marseilles for yours. We are rather surprised to read your letter, from which we understood that you allege that two different shipments of tiles were not properly separated on board or were mixed at the time of discharge because of their incorrect delivery in quantity. In respect to the stowage of the tiles in question, we wish to state that one lot of tiles consigned to Messrs “ABC” Co. Ltd., was stowed in the fore part of No.1 Orlop Deck and to Messrs. “DEF” & Co. was stowed in the No2 Tween-deck as shown in our Stowage Plan.Separations were especially made at the time of shipment for these parcels of apparently same style without respective marks thereon. On arrival at yours on 25th July, representative of each consignee together with yours, boarded and inspected the stowage of their parcels to their entire satisfaction and attended the discharging of it; we started discharging the two lots at the same time.In the course of discharging this cargo, we were particularly impressed with the fact that these separate lots, after being landed on the wharf by the ship’s gear, were carried by a number of wharf laborers and piled up at the rear of the warehouse where these shipment appeared to be loaded onto the trucks presumably belonging to the consignees while discharging was still in progress. If any discrepancy had occurred on that occasion, it should have been brought to the immediate notice of the parties concerned with a view to avoiding any possibility of misunderstanding in future but as a matter of fact, none of the ship’s officers or our freight clerks were noticed in this respect while we were at yours, which could and ought to have been done. Our suggestion, therefore, is that the mix-up of the two lots as stated in your letter had occurred at the time of delivery to consignees’ trucks in the manner as described above. This is the whole information we can afford you on the matter and, under these circumstances, we have no alternative but to decline our responsibility in this connection. Please could you make further investigations among all parties concerned on your side and also review your delivery records ?5.Stained DamageI wish to acknowledge receipt of your letter dated 3rd of this month, in which l note that 3 bales of the subject parcel were landed stained by oil.The parcel in question was shipped at Hong Kong in No.3 Hatch tween-deck at forward end against the bulkhead, and at Singapore when we were loading hardened wax destined for London, we could find no alternative but stow it in the same hatch in proximity to the bales of cotton sheeting in question with careful protection of mats and wooden dunnage in ample quantity. At the time of discharge of this goods we found that during the voyage in hot climate at this time of the year, the wax had become soft and semi-liquid, and part of it leaked out, finding its way through the dunnage mats and wooden boards on the deck to the said bales. After discharge in the shed, l inspected damage to the cargo and found that the damage was not of a serious nature as stated in your letter, but materially infinitesimal, which please take note.We regret the trouble caused and thank you for your kind arrangement for a settlement.6.ship’s agentsWe have the pleasure of informing you that we are agents for Union Fleet Co.
