purpose

in order to find the average velocity of an objects motion,

measureme nts of displaceme nts duri ng time in tervals are required. the

velocity of an object travelli ng in one direct ion must be opposite in sig n to an object travelli ng in the other direct ion. on a positi on-time fraph, this is represe nted as positive and n egative slopes. in this activity,

you will determine the average velocity of a person walking both forward and backward.

materials

• 10 mtape measure • 10 stopwatches • 11 stude nts

procedure

1.copy the follow ing data tables into your no tebook. give each data table a title.

2.on an open field, or in a long hallway, extend the 10 mtape measure

in a straight line. 3. place a stude nt with a stopwatch at each of the

positions indicated in table 1, from 2m to 10m. there does not need to be a stude nt with a stopwatch at the orig in (Om). 4. place the stude nt

who is going to walk the 10m at the origi n (0m).

5.on the commandgo," all students will start their stopwatches and the stude nt who is going to walk will beg in walk ing with as uniform a

velocity as possible for the complete 10m.

6.students will stop their stopwatches whenthe walking student passes their positi on.

7.the time on each students stopwatch will be shared with the group and recorded in table 1.

8.place a student, with a stopwatch, at each of the position indicated in table 2, from

10m to 0m. there does not need to be a student with a stopwatch at the 10m positi on. 9. place the stude nt who is going to walk backward at the 10m positi on.
