I had to write a whole essay, which is like a really long composition. I've never written anything that long in English before.My teacher Ms. Wang helped prepare our class though. They have a massive backyard with a swimming pool, trampoline, swing set, and more! We spent the entire first week just running around playing games and swimming until we were pruney.One of the funnest times was when we set up a big slip 'n slide using just a tarp and dish soap. We added a little too much soap though, and it got super slippery and wild! My little cousin Kyle went shooting off the end and landed in the bushes. We all laughed so hard. Whoops!After the reunion, my parents surprised me and my brother by taking us on a road trip to the Grand Canyon! We loaded up the car and headed west. On the drive there, we stayed in hotels and stopped at all the weird roadside attractions like the World's Largest Twine Ball and Carhenge. Those makeshift cars planted in the ground like Stonehenge were so bizarre!When we finally arrived at the Grand Canyon, the view was breathtaking. That giant orange-red canyon stretched as far as I could see. We went on a guided hiking tour along the rim trail and learned all about how the canyon was formed by erosion over millions of years. Our tour guide Terry knew everything! He showed us pictures of the canyon from a hundred years ago, and it looked totally different.My favorite part was going whitewater rafting down the Colorado River. The rapids were intense and our little raftwent crashing through the waves, spraying water everywhere. At one point, my dad fell right into the river! He was swept away for a few seconds before the guide pulled him back in. We still tease him about that to this day.After the Grand Canyon, we started the long drive home, stopping in quirky little towns along Route 66. In one art town, we watched a glassblowing demonstration which was mesmerizing. In another, we browsed an outdoor market selling crystals, dream catchers, and other handmade goods. I bought a pair of moccasins from a Navajo vendor which are my prized possessions.Finally, we made it back home just in time for the last few weeks of summer break. I spent those days just hanging out withmy neighborhood friends, having lemonade stands, riding bikes, and lamenting about going back to school. She makes learning English so much fun.Last year, when I was in fourth grade, I really struggled with English. I found it boring and confusing with all the weird grammar rules and funky pronunciations. My parents were pretty worried because English is such an important subject nowadays. If you can't speak and write well in English, it's going to be hardto get into a good middle school, high school, and university. Not being good at English could really limit my future opportunities.That all changed when I started fifth grade and got Miss Wang as my English teacher. From the very first class, she had such a positive and energetic attitude. She always comes into class with a big smile and greeting like "Good morning, my brilliant English learners!" It's impossible not to feel motivated with that kind of enthusiasm.But Miss Wang doesn't just have a sunny personality, she's also an amazing teacher. I'll give you some examples of the cool activities we've done in her class.One of my favorite games is "Sentence Stumpers" where she puts a bunch of words on the board and we have to race to make grammatically correct sentences using all the words. The first few people to make a proper sentence get bonus points. Sometimes she even has us make up hand motions andchoreography to go along with the songs, which is super silly but memorable.In addition to all the awesome in-class activities, Miss Wang is just a genuinely kind and caring teacher. She goes out of her way to give every student personalized attention and feedback. She'll patiently re-explain things until you understand, or meet with students one-on-one during breaks if they're struggling with a concept. She learns about our individual interests and ties them into the lessons to make it more relatable for us.For example, Miss Wang knows I'm really into basketball, so she'll sometimes use basketball examples when teaching vocabulary and idioms related to sports. Or when we had to write descriptive paragraphs, she let me write about describing an intense game situation on the court. Little things like that made me way more invested in the assignments.Miss Wang also does nice little extras to encourage and motivate us. She gives out fun stickers, temporary tattoos, or little treats when we do well on tests and assignments. She has an "Student of the Month" program where the top student gets a certificate and their picture posted on the classroom wall. I was so proud when I earned that for October!Most importantly, Miss Wang always reminds us to have confidence in ourselves as English learners. She says mistakes are natural and not something to be embarrassed or frustrated about. As long as we keep trying our best, we'll continue making progress. That's really helped me not beat myself up if I make errors, and just view them as opportunities to learn.With Miss Wang's amazing teaching abilities and unwavering support, I've gone from struggling with English to it being one of my favorite subjects this year! My writing, reading, listening, and speaking abilities have all improved drastically. I even got the highest score in our whole grade level on the big midterm English exam. I was over the moon about that achievement!My parents have been blown away by my English progress too. At my last parent-teacher conference, Miss Wang showed them samples of my writing assignments and speaking videos from throughout the year. They could scarcely believe the difference compared to my work last year. Every student deserves to have an educator as incredible as her!篇6The 2019 Changchun Middle School Entrance ExamWow, I can't believe the big middle school entrance exam is finally over! My brain feels like a wrung out dish rag after all that testing. I've been studying like crazy for months and months to get ready. The exam was really hard but I think I did pretty well, or at least I really hope so!I want to get into a good middle school more than anything. My parents and teachers have been pushing me so hard to do well. They keep telling me that getting into a top school will set me up for success later in life. I'm not exactly sure what that means, but it sounds important! From what I understand, the exam covers all the main subjects like math, Chinese, English, science, and history/politics. Basically everything we've been learning in elementary school.The exam was split into two days which felt like an eternity. On the first day, we had to take the math, Chinese, and English exams back-to-back. Those were definitely the hardest sections for me. The math part had some really tricky word problems that made my head spin. I'm okay at math usually, but some of those questions felt like they were written by aliens! The English section was rough too since I'm not a native speaker. There were reading comprehension passages that used vocabulary I'd never seen before. I just had to make my best guess on those.Of all the sections on the first day, I felt most confident about the Chinese exam. Reading and writing has always come pretty naturally to me. The exam asked us to write a short essay arguing whether school uniforms should be required. I think I made some solid points in my essay about how uniforms reduce distractions and peer pressure over clothing. Hopefully I explained my stance clearly enough to score well.After barely surviving the morning sessions, we then had to come back after a short lunch to take the science andhistory/politics exams in the afternoon. Those felt almost as mentally draining as the morning! The science part covered topics like biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science. Some of those concepts like the periodic table and laws of motion are still pretty confusing to me. At least the history part was more straightforward since it was mostly just memorizing dates, people, and events from Chinese history. Overall though, the second day was just a blur.When I finally walked out of the exam room, my brain was absolutely fried. I seriously felt like a zombie shuffling home. All the parents were waiting outside, asking their kids how they thought they did. I tried to stay optimistic and told my parents I gave it my best effort. Deep down though, I wasn't sure if mybest would be enough. This exam determines so much about which schools you can apply to and what opportunities will be available. No pressure or anything!Now it's an agonizing wait of a few months to get the exam results back. My parents have me basically quarantined at home to avoid any distractions while we wait. They won't even let me play video games or hangout with friends! In the meantime, I've been doing practice tests nonstop to keep my skills sharp, just in case I need to retake any sections. My dad keeps saying I shouldn't leave anything to chance.Sometimes I wonder if this whole exam process is a little excessive, especially at such a young age. Don't get me wrong, I know doing well in school is crucial. But it feels like my entire future hinges on this one exam which is KIND OF A LOT OF PRESSURE FOR A KID! Maybe I'm being overdramatic though. After all, kids across China are going through the exact same thing as me right now. We're all in this struggling, stressed out boat together.No matter how tough it was though, I'm really glad the exam is over and done with. A huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders, at least for a little while. Once I get my results back, I'll either be celebrating securing a spot at a good school ordevastated that I didn't perform well enough. Either way, I gave this exam my absolute maximum effort. There's nothing else I could have done to prepare.Now I guess I just need to wait patiently and hope that my hard work and preparation paid off. If not, there's always next year I suppose? No, I can't let myself think like that! This exam could truly make or break which opportunities are available to me. Stressing myself out isn't going to change anything though. All I can do now is wait, keep studying, and hope for the best. Wish me luck!。
