These cruel people used to beat them and be unkind to them in many other ways.It was very wicked to buy and sell human beings as if they were cattle. Yet Christian people did it, and many who were good and kind otherwise thought there was no wrong in being cruel to their poor slaves. 'They are only black people,' they said to themselves. 'Black people do not feel things as we do.' That was not kind, as black people suffer pain just in the same way as white people do.One of the saddest things for the poor slaves was that they could never long be a happy family all together—father, mother, and little brothers and sisters—because at any time the master might sell the father or the mother or one of the children to some one else. When this happened those who were left behind were very sad indeed—more sad than if their dear one had died.Uncle Tom was a slave. He was a very faithful and honest servant, and his master, Mr. Shelby, was kind to him. Uncle Tom's wife was called Aunt Chloe. She was Mr. Shelby's head cook, and a very good one too she was. Nobody in all the country round could make such delicious pies and cakes as Aunt Chloe.Uncle Tom and Aunt Chloe lived together in a pretty little cottage built of wood, quite close to Mr. Shelby's big house.The little cottage was covered with climbing roses, and the garden was full of beautiful bright flowers and lovely fruit trees.Uncle Tom and Aunt Chloe lived happily for many years in their little cottage, or cabin, as it was called. All day Uncle Tom used to work in the fields, while Aunt Chloe was busy in the kitchen at Mr. Shelby's house. When evening came they both went home to their cottage and their children, and were merry together.Mr. Shelby was a good man, and kind to his slaves, but he was not very careful of his money. When he had spent all he had, he did not know what to do to get more. At last he borrowed money from a man called Haley, hoping to be able to pay it back again some day.But that day never came. Haley grew impatient, and said, 'If you don't pay what you owe me, I will take your house and lands, and sell them to pay myself back all the money I have lent to you.'So Mr. Shelby sold everything he could spare and gathered money together in every way he could think of, but still there was not enough.Then Haley said, 'Give me that slave of yours called Tom—he is worth a lot of money.'But Mr. Shelby knew that Haley was not a nice man. • Simon Legree Simon Legree is a cruel slave owner—a Northerner by birth—whose name has become synonymous with greed. He is arguably the novel's main antagonist. His goal is to demoralize Tom and break him of his religious faith; he eventually orders Tom whipped to death out of frustration for his slave's unbreakable belief in God. The novel reveals that, as a young man, he had abandoned his sickly mother for a life at sea and ignored her letter to see her one last time at her deathbed. He sexually exploits Cassy, who despises him, and later sets his designs on Emmeline. It is unclear if Legree is based on any actual individuals. Reports surfaced after the 1870s that Stowe had in mind a wealthy cotton and sugar plantation owner named Meredith Calhoun, who settled on the Red River north of Alexandria, Louisiana. Generally, however, the personal characteristics of Calhoun ("highly educated and refined") do not match the uncouthness and brutality of Legree. Calhoun even edited his own newspaper, published in Colfax, originally "Calhoun's Landing", renamed the National Democrat after Calhoun's death. However, Calhoun's overseers may have been in line with the hated Legree's methods and motivations.

• • • • . During Eliza's escape, she meets up with her husband George Harris, who had run away previously. They decide to attempt to reach Canada. However, they are now being tracked by a slave hunter named Tom Loker. Eventually Loker and his men trap Eliza and her family, causing George to shoot Loker. Worried that Loker may die, Eliza convinces George to bring the slave hunter to a nearby Quaker settlement for medical treatment. Back in New Orleans, St. Clare debates slavery with his Northern cousin Ophelia who, while opposing slavery, is prejudiced against black people. St. Clare, however, believes he is not biased, even though he is a slave owner. In an attempt to show Ophelia that her views on blacks are wrong, St. Clare purchases Topsy, a young black slave. St. Clare then asks Ophelia to educate her. After Tom has lived with the St. Clares for two years, Eva grows very ill. Before she dies she experiences a vision of heaven, which she shares with the people around her. As a result of her death and vision, the other characters resolve to change their lives, with Ophelia promising to throw off her personal prejudices against blacks, Topsy saying she will better herself, and St. Clare pledging to free Uncle Tom

Uncle Tom’s CabinThe novel of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, written by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe, tells us a story about Uncle Tom’s tragic life. Uncle Tom, the main character, is seen as a noble, long-suffering Christian slave.At first, he belongs to Arthur Shelby, but then Mr. Shelby has to sell him with another slave because of the debts. Among his life, he is sold for several times, and at last time, he is sold to Simon Legree, a cruel slave owner—a Northerner by birth—whose name has become synonymous with greed. Legree feels extremely angry when Tom refuses Legree's order to whip his fellow slaves and wants to crush Tom’s faith in gold. However, Tom refuses to stop reading his Bible and comforting the other slaves as best he can. Very shortly before Tom's death, George Shelby (Arthur Shelby's son) arrives to buy Tom’s freedom, but finds he is too late. Uncle Tom has died. After that, George returns to the Kentucky farm and frees all his slaves and tells them to remember Tom's sacrifice and his belief in the true meaning of Christianity.Through the whole novel, the author just wants to tell us one thing: the evil and immorality of slavery. All the people should be equally, no matter you are the white or the black. No one is born to be a slave. However, the fact is opposite. In America, the black aretreated as goods that the white can sell or buy them if they will. They even can beat the slaves and do not need to pay back anything. So we see no matter how Legree beats and hits Tom, Tom never rebels against him. All the things he can do are to keep quiet and accept everything alone. And it is also because of his faith in god. However, differing from Uncle Tom, Eliza escapes to the North with her five-year old son Harry after he is sold to Mr. Haley.Her husband, George, eventually finds Eliza and Harry in Ohio, and then they move to other country where no slavery exists. She and her husband are eager for freedom and they know they must fight against the slavery for freedom.In addition, the author also shows what is the real meaning of Christianity and that she feels Christian theology cannot exit with slavery. The slavery is against the basic theology of Christianity. So there are someone says that the influence of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”is one of the reasons that leads to the American Civil War. But I appreciate to call it the beginning of Abolition Movement rather than that. Because after the novel is published the American slaves begin to realize it is their basic right to have freedom. Uncle Tom is a great man, a noble hero and praiseworthy person. Maybe someone will say he is foolish when he chooses to stay in the farm. But the reason he will do it merely is that he is the Christian UncleTom. Comparing to the cruel Legree, Uncle Tom’s goodness and honesty seem more obvious.。

On Legree's plantation, Tom meets two fellow slaves, Emmeline and Cassy. Emmeline is a young mulatto (白黑混血儿) woman sold to Legree at the same time as Tom, and she attempts to befriend the embittered Cassy, who has suffered at the hands of Legree for several years. Cassy has seen her children sold and is so destitute(贫苦的) that Tom's pleas that she put her faith and trust in God fall on deaf ears. Legree soon comes to hate Tom after Tom refuses to beat and discipline the other slaves. Legree had planned to turn Tom into a brutal (野蛮的) overseer(监工), and when he realizes that Tom will not participate in cruelty, he becomes enraged and takes out his wrath on Tom. Tom becomes discouraged until he has a vision of heaven one night as he is drifting off to sleep. The vision re he decides it is his mission to suffer for the other slaves. He regularly fills their cotton baskets at the expense of his own, gives them his food and water, and reads the Bible to them. Tom's acts of kindness enrage Legree, and when Emmeline and Cassy escape, he demands that Tom tell him everything he knows. Tom admits that he knew of their plans to escape and is aware of their whereabouts(下落), but he refuses to disclose where they are. Legree beats Tom so severely that after a few days, he dies.

Uncle Tom's Cabin has exerted an influence equaled by few other novels in history. Upon publication, Uncle Tom's Cabin ignited a firestorm of protest from defenders of slavery while the book elicited praise from abolitionists. As a best-seller, the novel heavily influenced later protest literature.

Analysis of the Main Characters
Mrs.Stowe portrays several vivid characters with distinctive temperament. Among them, there are the white and the black, the nobles and the slaves, the kind and the cruel. In her description of all these characters, we can learn that Mrs.Stowe advocates that people are equal and is against racial discrimination. She also held the belief that people are born to to be equal and should have right to enjoy freedom. So the main of the book are all Christians to different extent.
