1. For most people the sea was remote, and with the exception of early intercontinental travellers or others who earned a living from the sea, there was little reason to ask many questions about it, let alone to ask what lay beneath the surface. (1990. Text 1)
【析句】复合句,本句主干为the sea was remote and there was little reason to...,and连接两个并列句子,两个句子之间又有with the exception of...作伴随状语,伴随状语中又包含who earned a living from the sea定语从句修饰others。
2. The first time that question "What is at the bottom of the oceans?" had to be answered with any commercial consequence was when the laying of a telegraph cable from Europe to America was proposed. (1990. Text 1)
The first time was when the laying...was proposed, when引导表语从句,而that question had to be answered with...则是定语从句修饰the first time。
3. At the early attempts, the cable failed and when it was taken out for repairs it was found to be covered in living growths, a fact which defied contemporary scientific opinion that there was no life in the deeper parts of the sea. (1990. Text 1)
【析句】句子主干为the cable failed and it was found to be covered in living growths, and 连接两个并列句子,中间插入了when it was taken out for repairs为时间状语从句.it was found to be covered in...中,it指代the cable, found为find的过去分词相当于形容词,后面接不定式。之后a fact作同位语,which defied contemporary secientific opinion为定语从句修饰a fact, 最后that there was no life...

1. It may have been a sharp criticism of the pupil's technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad reflection on the teacher who had omitted to read the essay, which contained some beautiful expressions of the child's deep feelings. (1991. Text 1)
It may have been a sharp criticism..., but it was a sad refection of the teacher, but连接两个成转折关系的句子,其中,后句又包含两个从句:who had omitted to read the essay作定语从句修饰the teacher,而which引导非限制性定语从句修饰前面的句子。
2. The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the errors, but if his priorities had centered on he child's ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the presentation would have given the pupil more motivation to seek improvement. (1991. Text 1)
【析句】本句的主干与例句一相似,都是由but连接两个句子,后句中,if his priorities had centered on...为条件状语从句,主句an expression of his disappointment would have given...。注意后句的时态搭配,主句would have given为虚拟式,从句用had centered on过去完成时。
3. In 1862 Congress authorized two western railroad companies to build lines from Nebraska westward and from California eastward to a meeting point, so as to complete a transcontinental
