Passage OneAs the concept of emotional intelligence (EI) has gone global, we ’ve watched professionals fail as they try to improve their emotional intelligence because they either don ’t know where to focus their efforts or they haven ’t understood how to improve these skills on a practical level. In our work consulting with companies and coaching leaders, we have found that if you ’re looking to develop particular EI strengths, it helps to consider areas for improvement others have identified along with the goals you want to achieve----and then to actively build habits in those areas rather than simply relying on understanding them conceptually. The first step is to get a sense of how your self-perception (how you see yourself) differs from your reputation (how others see you). This is especially true for the development of emotional intelligence because we can be blind to how we express and read the emotional components of our interactions. For example, most of us think that we ’re good listeners, but very often that ’s really not the case. Without this external reality check, it will be difficult for you to identify the ways that your actions affect your performance. Getting feedback from others can also provide proof of the necessity of shifting our behavior and motivation to do so.To give you the best sense of where the differences lie between your self-perception and reputation, you should use a 360-drgree feedback assessment that takes into account the multiple facets of EI. The keyis to find one that guarantees confidentiality to those giving you feedback and that is focused on development and not on performance assessment.Secondly, when you get your feedback from an assessment, let that inform what you want to improve. But also consider what your goals are. When it comes to cultivating strengths in emotional intelligence, you’re at a huge disadvantage if you’re only interested because others said you should be. Your emotional intelligence is so tied up in hour sense of self that being intrinsically(内在的) motivated to make the effort matters more when changing longstanding habits than it does when simply learning a skill. That means the areas that you choose to actively work on should lie at the intersection of the feedback you’ve gotten and the areas that are most important to your own aspirations(渴望). Understanding the impacts of your current EI habits relative to your goals will keep you going over the long haul as you do the work of strengthening your emotional intelligence.Once you’ve determined which EI skills you want to focus on, identify specific actions that you’ll take. If you’re working on becoming a better listener, for example, you might decide that when you’re conversing with someone you’ll take the time to pause, listen to what they have to say, and check that you understand before you reply. Keep it specific. You should also take every naturally occurring opportunity to practice the skill you’re developing, no matter how small.By starting to change your routine reactions, you’ll be well on your way to figuring out the old habits that aren’t serving you well and transforming them into new, improved ones that do.解析:71. confuses/puzzles 本题考查考生对第一段文本的概括能力。

江苏省启东中学2014届高三英语考前辅导4高考英语2014-05-31 1625address students’ mental and psychological problems. These at least offer some comfort to students facing tough job prospects andpersonal difficulties. From appointing in-house student counselors to setting up hotlinesand recruiting students to help their troubled peers, manyuniversities are making efforts to fight student depression. There is no denying that much remains to be done, but such efforts are already working, helping students and saving lives. However, the most important front in this battle lies with the students themselves. Whatever efforts school officials make, it is up to students to realize their problems and ask for help. Unfortunately, many students considering suicide refuse to seek help. By shutting themselves away, they can easily fall into vicious cycles(恶性循环), becoming ever more vulnerable to personal difficulties and the pressures of the outside world. While establishing better on-campus psychological education and outreach programs as a step forward, students themselves mustactively reach out for help. In deciding which candidateIwant to vote for, there are two main issues for me:the economy and education. These issues are important to me because they affect me the mostright now. The economy affects everyone, and education is important because I am about to enter college. When I looked at how each candidate views these issues, one man stood out to me,and that is Democratic candidate Barack Obama.I like a11 of Senator Obama’s ideas for improving the economy. He wants to bring the troops home from Iraq, thereby saving the $12billion we spend there every month. Another point that Obama makes is that the United States’ current energy policy is hurting the economy. He believes that if new energy bills are passed, it will help the U. S. get out of its current economic slump, and I agree. With these ideas and strategies, I strongly believe that Obama can improve the current state of the economy.Obama also has a plan to improve education. He believes that we needto start educating children at a young age. He also hopes to closethe gap of achievement between students, which means improvingschools that need help. He wants to pay teachers more and treat them like professionals, but in exchange he calls for higherresponsibility.Obama also has a plan to make college more affordable. He wantspublic colleges to be free for students who maintain a “B” average during high school. And he plans to give a $4,000 tax credit for college and university students who complete 20140 hours of community service each year. I believe these ideas to improve education aregood enough and will help many students. Therefore, there is no longer any doubt in my mind who will be receiving my vote Barack Obama.1. Now I’d like to give you a few tips.First of all, start them young.Get them in a boat, or on a pier(码头), or on the bank at as young an age as you possibly can. Obviously this means being extremely conscious about their safety. Whatever you do, DON’T plan on any fishing yourself. If fishing is going to happen, the fishing will be done by the kids with your help! This lets you pay attention to them and not ignore them while you fish.Next, make sure you plan the first trips to someplace where you can actually catch a lot of fish. At this point, it doesn’t matter wha t kind or how big, just make sure they can catch some. A small child’s patience is very short, and waiting 30 minutes for a bite will turn them off in a hurry. You may need to go to a small pond where thefish are dying to eat bread balls. Any type of fish will do. Remember, this is for them, not for you.As they fish, cheer for every fish they catch. Make a really big deal out of it. Take pictures. And if it’s possible, take some home to clean. Let the child help you clean with a table knife, so he can’t get hurt.Make sure he makes and sees the connection from catching to cleaningto cooking. As soon as you have the fish cleaned, it’s into the kitchen to start cooking. Let him flour and cornmeal the fish. Lethim see the fish cooking, and talk about how good they are. Then when it’s ready, make sure you brag(吹嘘) on the fact that he (or she ) caught these fish, and “aren’t they good?”In this way, I’m sure your kids will be interested in fishing and good at fishing.Title Teach a kid to fishStart them young ·Be aware of (71)_________·Plan a fishing trip for the (72)_________ not for yourself.Plan the first fishing (73)_______ ·Choose places where the kids can catch fish easily because a small child’s patience doesn’t(74)_________ long.·Regardless of the kind and (75)_________ of fish.Cheer for every fish they catch ·Make a big deal out of it.·Take pictures.·Take some home and let the child help to clean with a table knife to avoid (76)_________ hurt.(77)_________ the fish they catch ·(78)_________him to flour and cornmeal the fish.·Let him see the fish cooking.·Talk about how good they are.(79)_________ ·Make them (80)_________ in and goodat fishing.BIn addition to self-awareness, imagination, and conscience, it is the fourth quality — independent will — that really makes effectiveself-management possible. It is the ability to make decisions and choices and to act in agreement with them. It is the ability to act rather than to be acted upon, to actively carry out the program we have developed through the other three qualities. The human will is an amazing thing. Time after time, it has overcome unbelievable difficulties. The Helen Kellers of this world givedramatic(给人深刻印象的) evidence to the value, the power of the independent will. But as we examine this quality in the context of effective self-management, we realize it’s usually not the dramatic, the visible, the once-in-a-lifetime, up-by-the-bootstraps(自立自强的) effort that brings lasting success. This special ability comes from learning how to use this great quality in the decisions we make every day.The degree to which we have developed our independent will in our everyday lives is measured by our personal honesty. Honesty is, fundame ntally, the value we place on ourselves. It’s our ability to make and keep promises to ourselves, to “walk our talk.”Effective management is putting first things first. While leadership decides what “first things” are, it is management that puts them first, day-by-day, moment-by-moment. Management is discipline (training to be self-controlled), carrying it out.Discipline obtains from belief—belief in a set of values, belief in an overriding(最主要的) purpose, to a long-term or short term goal that must be carried out.In other words, if you are an effective manager of yourself, your discipline comes from within; it is a function of your independent will. You are a follower of your own deep values and their source. And you have the will, the quality to control your feelings and moods rather than depend on others or have your work half done.Title The power of independent willTheme Independent will makes self-management (71) ▲Reasons ·The example given to (72) ▲ power of independent will is amazing.·Power of independent will helps to make one’s(73) ▲ every day.·(74) ▲ is very important to develop ourindependent will.·It’s our ability to have our promises made and(75) ▲ .Suggestions ·Effective managers should know (76) ▲ should bedone first.·Effective managers with discipline should(77) ▲ to their promises.(78) ▲·You (79) ▲ your deep values.·Your feelings and moods are able to be (80) ▲ .六.【书面表达】根据最近几年高考的改卷要求,一篇好的书面达要求尽量做到以下几点:一.审题必不可少。

Early childhood education primarily focuses on learning through playing to develop the child’s physical, sensory, communicational and social development.Early childhood education has become a concern of the government, who pushes poor children to be formally trained before they are old enough for kindergarten. There are good reasons for the government to push early childhood education.Studies have shown that orphaned children who did not receive good care and education become developmentally delayed causing failure in school, and even in life.Further studies show that poor children who take part in Head Start programs are more prepared for school, less likely to end up in Special Education classes, and are less likely to receive public help or go to prison. There are also negative parts to putting a child in formal education programs too early.Time Magazine online explains that “the younger the child the less his chances of catching up with first-grade work.” I have personally witnessed many children of my generation who went to Head Start programs become frustrated and bored with school before they finished high school.Yet parents have been sure that the earlier the child starts school, the better off he or she is, so they push to start children earlier.Actually while early formal education of poor children does show great gains in the early elementary years, studies also show that this head start is really a “false start”, as the gains are lost in middle and high school years. It seems that environment is a bigger factor on life’s success than early education.Head Start programs have not achieved its original goal in closing the achievement gap in poor and middle school children.Perhaps it is time to find other ways to close that gap.1. The purpose of the government valuing the early childhood education is ________.A.to develop the children’s communicationB.to give orphaned children good care and educationC.to get the children prepared for the kindergartenD.to train the children formally and regularly2. According to the studies, which of the following is True?A.Children with good early education may have a rich life.B.The orphaned children are usually unhappy in their life.C.Children without early education can do well at school.D.Head Start programs are helpful to the poor children.3. “the younger the child the less his chances of catching up with first-grade work.”suggests that _________.A.the early childhood e ducation is helpless to the child’s gradeB.it is good for the young children to receive early educationC.the early education can help the children follow the gradeD.the younger the children are, the cleverer they will be4. "Now, a student doesn't even know who lives two doors away from him because he is so busy on the Internet," said Prakash Gopalan, dean of student affairs. "The old dormitory culture of companionship and socializing among students is gone. This is not healthy in our opinion."IIT-Mumbai, with about 5,000 students, is one of seven IIT s across India which are considered to be among the finest engineering schools in the world. They are also a talent pool for global technology giants. But their hard courses, tough competition and lonely campus lifestyle have taken an effect on students. Depressive and dysfunctional (不正常的) lifestyles are known to be common among IIT students, and at least nine have committed suicide in the past five years. Students have unlimited free Internet access in their boarding houses to help them in their studies, but many also use it to surf, chat, download movies and music, blog and for gaming.Starting Monday, Internet access will be banned between 11 p.m. and 12.30 p.m. at IIT-Mumbai's 13 boarding buildings to encourage students to sleep early and to try and force them out of their "shells," Gopalan said. But the move has not gone down well with students who say they hate their lives being regulated. "Now they will say we need to listen to a lullaby (摇篮曲) to go to sleep," said Rajiv, an electronics student.。

I said, “Thanks,” and 6 wiping off my car. He sat there 7 as I worked. The 8 beg for money never came. As the silence between us widened something inside said, “ Ask him if he needs any help.” I was 9 that he would say “yes”. “Do you need any help?” I asked. He answered in three10 but profound words that I shall never11 . “Don’t we all?” he said.I had been feeling high, successful and important 12 those three words 13 me like a shotgun. Don’t we all? I needed help. Maybe not for bus fare or a place to sleep, but I needed help. I 14 my wallet and gave him not only enough for bus fare, but enough to get a warm meal and 15 for the day. Those three little words still ring 16 . No matter how much you have 17_, you need help too. These teachers were 2 that these 5 were the best students in the class. But the fact was that these students were only 3 , and they were not the best students at all. Well, guess what? At the end of the school year, all the 5 students scored among the 4 in the class. They even gained 15—30 IQ 5 intelligent points! What 6 these students change so much to become top students? You know the only difference was the change in their teachers’7 . Because the teachers believed that these 5 kids were the top students, they expected 8 from them. And so these 5 students began to 9 and expect more from themselves. It was the way teachers saw and treated the students 10 changed the way the students saw themselves, so they worked harder to reach their 11 .Do you know that if you expect the best from people, they’ll 12 want to give you their best. A great leader said, “Treat a person just how he 13 to be on the outside, and you’ll make him even worse. 14 treat a person as if he’s already a 15 , and you’ll help make him the best he can be.”Like the true story of 7-year-old Johnny. His teacher got so 16 him and said, “Johnny, you’re the naughtiest boy in this class! Besides that, you’re the dumbest! I 17 if you’ll ever change!” Well the next year Johnny had a 18 teacher. And on the first day of class, she met with Johnny after school. She said, “Johnny, I’ve heard a lot about you!” Then she winked at him and said, “But I don’t 19 a word of it!” And every day after that, this new teacher treated Johnny as if he was one of the smartest and 20 students even when Johnny did naughty things. Well, you guessed it. After just a few months, Johnny became one of the top students in that class.1. A. experiment B. party C. work D. school year2. A. told B. requested C. ordered D. expected3. After watching Cheryl, my daughter-in-law, through the six long months when her mother suffered towards death, I think the most painful moments can be in the waiting to say good-bye.Cheryl made the two-hour trip over and over to be with her mother. They spent the long afternoons praying, comforting, and retelling their shared memories. As her mother’s pain increased and more medication was needed to ease her into sedation, Cheryl sat for hours of silent vigil (守夜) by her mother’s bed. Each time she kisseed her mother before eleaving, her mother would be close to tears and say, “I’m sorry. You drove so far and sat for so long and I didn’t even get up to talk with you.”Cheryl would tell her not to worry, but still her mother felt she had let her down and apologized at each good-bye until the day Cheryl found a way to give her mother the same reassurance her mother had given to her so many times.“Mom, do you remember when I made the high school basketball team?” Chery l’s mother nodded. “You’d drive so far and sit for so long and I never even left the bench to play. You waited for me after every game and each time I felt bad and apologized to you for wasting your time.” Cheryl gently took her mother’s hand.“Do you remember what you would say to me?”“ I would say I didn’t come to see you play. I came to see you.”“And you meant those words, didn’t you?”“Yes, I really did.”“Well, now I say the same words to you. I didn’t come to see you talk. I came to see you.”Her mother understood and smiled as she floated back into sleep.Their afternoons together passed quietly into days, weeks, and months. Their love filled the spaces between their words. To the last day they cared for each other in the stillness, love given and received just by seeing each other. The toads failed in that duty but spread across Queensland and into neighboring northern areas. Now it calmly invades the states of Western Australia and New South Wales (NSW). NSW wildlife experts fear the amphibians —which have poisonous backs that kill hungry predators—will have a terrible effect on native animals. Those fears may be about to be realized. Australia’s leading government research body, the Commonwealth Science and Industry Research Organization (CSIRO), forecasts that a rise in average temperatures will make NSW an ideal living place for the cane toads.Tony Robinson, head of CSIRO’s Wildlife, Pest, and Diseases Program, said climate change is increasing the amount of suitable living place for the cane toads.“With climate change, the cane toads might go down as far as Sydney and some areas of Western Australia,”Robinson said.Recent estimates put the pace of the toads’ westward march at nearly 17 miles (27 kilometers) a year and slightly slower from north to south.“More southerly cities, such as Melbourne and Adelaide, would likely remain too cold and dry to ever suit the toads,” Robinson noted, “but Perth could expect cane toads in five years’ time.”Sydney could see their arrival in the next 20 years.Robinson said there is no method that will keep the toads under control. The cane toads already cover at least half of Queensland and most of the northern country. The toads are believed to number in the billions.A Venezuelan virus was tried in the 1990s but had to be given up after it was found to also kill native frog species. Scientists and governmental bodies believe a national approach is needed. The main threat the toads cause to species such as dingoes, and crocodiles is the poison contained in glands (腺) on each of their shoulders. The poison sprays out when the toads are threatened or handled roughly. The poison is made up of 14 different chemicals.Cane toads also compete, and usually win the hunt for food and living space.“If the government and other states combine resources, I believe we can achieve a very practical biological- control research program,” Burns said.8.
