Tonya Andrews is a math teacher in Texas. For 16 years, she loved her dear pet cat Blondie very much and wanted to spend as much time with her as possible. It is totally understandable that she had a special feeling for Blondie because she’d sav ed her from a building in Forth Worth. But recently, shortly after she and her husband had realized that Blondie seemed to be getting sick, the elderly cat die d in her arms on her way to the pet hospital. Naturally, Mrs. Andrews was heart broken.

After Blondie’s death, Mrs. Andrews went to work every day, feeling upset. She couldn’t help but share the sad news of her sad loss with some of her students at Joshua High School in Joshua, TX, and shortly after, a few of the girls in her class came up with a few surprises to cheer her up.

As one student filmed the moment, the girls first gave her some white roses, followed by cupcakes and balloons to express their c are. Mrs. Andrews seemed touched, but it was their next surprise that deepl y m oved her and that everyone was talking about.

All that the shocked teacher could seem to say was, “Are they for me?” as she held the baby cats named Missy and Girlie.

“I knew something was going on when only half of my class was in my room, second period the next day when the bell rang, ” Andrews told the Huffington Post, feeling thankful. “Then she held them out to me and said they were mine. My heart can now experience happiness again.”

What the high school students did is really meaningful, especially for people who have gone t hrough loss, like Tonya Andrews. The good news is that it certainly looks like it was worth all the effort. Tonya Andrews finally was happy when her students did kind things for her.

There is a popular saying in the English language: “Sticks and stones may break my bones (骨头), but words will never hurt me.”

Wel l, that is not true. Words do hurt. Children may be laughed at for being short and thin, or they may feel left ou t because their classmates say how strange they look with a hat on. What’s worse, unkind words cause more than emotional harm. They can hurt children as much as being hit on the body, sometimes even more so.

A recent study of middle school children showed that verbal abuse (言语虐待) by other children can harm the development in the brain. The study was a project done by researchers at Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts.

Researcher Martin Teicher and his team also studied young adults, aged 18 to 25. They were asked about their experiences of verbal abuse. Then researchers took brain tests on them. Results showed that those who reported experiencing verbal abuse from their classmates in middle school didn’t have balanced development between the left and the right side of the brain.

The unusual thing about the human brain is that it still develops after birth. Babies can’t walk for months because their brains are not fully developed. Other things, such
