Passage 1

The film industry in America actually started up in New York at the beginning of this century, but it quickly moved to Hollywood .There were two main reasons for the move. Firstly, the stars in these ea rly movies were from the theatre and they demanded good pay. Film companies weren’t rich at the time so this was a problem. But the main reason was the weather! Film in those days was very different to film today and needed very bright light to give a clear picture. The weather in California was warm and sunny for much of the year, and the countryside was beautiful and suitable for film making.

They made mainly westerns at first because they were cheap and people loved them. They told the story of America of the hard years of slowly opening up the west and winning wars against the Indians. After a while, other kinds of films were made .Of course, until about 1927, the film were silent and the “speech” was shown on the screen in the form of writing on card s. When sound was introduced, some stars just couldn’t carry on in the movies. Some had awful voices, other just couldn’t really act.

Hollywood had its best period in the lions of people went to the cinema every week. And this continued right up to the start of World War Two. However, the great days came to an end by the 1950s.By then most families in America had a TV and the same happened later in Europe. People started to stay at home and not to go to the movies. This continued for twenty years but now things are slowly changing. Television has got worse and worse and film have got better and better. The cinema is back in business!
