Fiona tapped on the door. 'Hurry up in there,' she called. 'Nearly finished,' replied Bertha. 'I must colour my hair before I go jogging,' said Fiona. Bertha came out of the bathroom. She had a towel wrapped around her head. 'I feel much better,' said Bertha. 'I've left the bathroom tidy.' 'Look at the time,' said Fiona. 'I shall be late.' Fiona dashed into the bathroom. She splashed on her hair colour. She was in such a hurry that she did not look in the mirror. 'Have a lovely run,' said Bertha. 019 Fiona jogged down the road. She ran through the park. Fiona saw a little kitten sitting on a wall. 'Hello, little kitty.' She stretched out to stroke the kitten. The kitten ran up a tree. A policeman was passing by. 'I saw you frighten that kitten. What an unkind thing to do.' 'I only tried to stroke it,' mumbled Fiona. She jogged on towards the playground. Some children were playing on the swings. 'Would you like a push?' she called. The children took one look at Fiona. They jumped off the swings and ran away. The park keeper raced up. 'What do you think you are doing? You were chasing those children. Go and chase someone your own size.' Fiona ran off. 021 Fiona stopped for a rest outside the supermarket. An old lady was pushing her trolley towards the door. Fiona ran over to help. She held open the door. 'After you,' she said. 'It's a trick.
Title: The Mysterious TreasureSummary:The story begins in a small coastal town called Shellville, where a group of young friends -- Alex, Lily, Peter, and Sarah -- embark on a thrilling adventure to find a long-lost treasure. Legend has it that a notorious pirate named Blackbeard had hidden his immense treasure on a nearby island centuries ago, leaving behind a cryptic map as a clue. The four friends stumble upon an old diary in the attic of Lily's grandfather's house, which hints at the location of the hidden treasure. Excited by the prospect of uncovering a pirate's fortune, they set out on a quest to find it.Their journey takes them through dense forests, treacherous caves, and dangerous cliffs, as they unravel various riddles and puzzles left by Blackbeard. Along the way, they face multiple challenges, including booby traps and rival treasure hunters who also seek to find the hidden riches. As they get closer to the treasure's location, tensions rise among the friends. Greed and selfishness begin to cloud their judgment, leading to internal conflicts. However, they eventually realize that their friendship is more valuable than any treasure, and they must work together to overcome the obstacles and solve the final puzzle. Finally, after a series of nail-biting moments, the friends reach the spot where the treasure is believed to be buried. They dig anxiously and, to their astonishment, uncover the long-lost loot of Blackbeard. Overwhelmed with joy and relief, they decide to share the treasure equally and swear to keep the location a secret.Returning to Shellville as heroes, the friends use the treasure to contribute towards the betterment of their community. They establish a scholarship fund, build a new library, and donate to local charities. The story ends with the friends realizing that the true treasure was not the gold and jewels they found, but the bond they formed throughout their adventurous journey, which will last a lifetime.。

Unit 8 Nature and Nurture
Unit 8 Nature and NurtureTwins, Genes, and EnvironmentHeredity or environment: which is stronger? The potentials which a person is born with determine in some way what he will do in life. Therefore heredity is fate, a kind of predestination. However, genes do not work in a vacuum; as soon as we begin considering the role that they play in the development of the individual, we see that there can be no development without the interacting environment. No characteristic is caused exclusively by either environment or genes. The relative effects of heredity and environment are most clearly observable in identical twins. Most identical twins are raised together and are remarkably alike in both appearance and behavior. These cases demonstrate that individuals with the same genes, when raised in the same environment, will respond to it in much the same way. They do not indicate what would happen if these identical individuals were raised separately.A number of studies have been made of identical twins raised apart. The twins who were the subjects of these studies lived in America, were raised in much the same physical environments, and experienced much the same nutritional histories. Therefore, as one might expect, they maintained the closest resemblance to each other in physical appearance, height, and weight. Exceptions occurred when one twin had developed a rather severe illness and the other had not; but on the whole everyone is impressed by the great psychological and physical likenesses that exist between identical twins, even those who have been separated from infancy. In a study of nineteen sets of twins who had been separated from birth, investigators found that in approximately two thirds of the sets there were no more significant differences than existed among unseparated pairs of twins. This strongly suggests the power of the genes and the limitation of the effect of environment. However, it must be remembered that, although the identical twins who were studied lived in different families far removed from each other, the environments in those families were not, on the whole, substantially different. Usually every effort would be made to put each child in a home with a background similar to that of its own family, and therefore it should not be surprising to find that the twins developed similarly. But in those cases in which there had been a greater difference in the environments of the separated twins, the differences between the twins were more substantial. The following case illustrates what happens to identical twins when they are brought up in contrasting environments.Gladys and Helen were born in a small Ohio town and were separated at about eighteen months of age. They did not meet again until they were twenty-eight years old. Helen had been adopted twice. Her first foster parents had proved to be unstable, and Helen had been returned to the orphanage after a couple of years; after several months she was again adopted, by a farmer and his wife who lived in southeastern Michigan. This was her home for the next twenty-five years. Her second foster-mother, though she had had few educational advantages herself, was determined that Helen should receive a good education; Helen eventually graduated from college, taught school for twelve years, married at twenty-six, and had a daughter.Gladys was adopted by a Canadian railroad conductor and his wife. When she was in the third grade, the family moved to a rather isolated part of the Canadian Rockies, where there were no schools, and Gladys' formal education came to an end, and was not resumed until the family moved to Ontario. She stayed at home and did housework until she was seventeen, and then went to work in a knitting mill. She went to Detroit at nineteen, got a job, and married when she was twenty-one.Helen had been healthier than Gladys, in childhood and adulthood, but other than that, their environments had been very similar except for their educations. Their weight, height, hair color, and teeth were very similar. The differences that distinguished them were obviously associated with the different social lives they had led.Helen was confident, graceful, made the most of her personal appearance, and showed considerable polish and ease in social relationships. Gladys was shy, self-conscious, quiet and without charming or graceful manners. A scientist who studied them remarked, "As an advertisement for a college education the contrast between these two twins should be quite effective."Considering the nature of their environmental experiences, the differences in Helen and Gladys are not surprising. Since psychological traits depend so much upon experience, it is to be expected that they will reflect it. On the other hand, traits that are not liable to be influenced by the environment are more likely to exhibit a high degree of similarity in identical twins. Important as they are, genes alone are never absolutely responsible for any trait. What we can do is set by the genes, but what we actually do is largely determined by the environment.

They looked like this: Miss P Jones 10 Elm Road Bilton ; Miss F Jones 79 Elm Road BiltonThere were two Miss Jones in Elm Road. Pippa Jones lived at number 10. She was mad about ponies. Flo Jones lived at number 79. She was mad about football. But that morning the postman had broken his glasses and he couldn’t see very well. That’s how the mix-up began.Pony-mad Pippa was out at the stable when her letter came. Pippa had a pony called Blossom who was a champion jumper. She gave Blossom some oats and a kiss on the nose. Then her dad stuck his head out of the back door. Pippa, there is a letter for you.Football-mad Flo was in the garden when her letter arrived. Flo played for Redland Rovers. She was wearing her Rovers kit as usual. She dribbled past the cat and swerved round the swing. Thud. the ball hit the back door. goal. cried Flo. Flo! called her mum. Stop that racket and come inside. There’s a letter for you.Flo tore open her letter. It said: Dear Miss Jones, The Junior Cup is on Saturday at Chestnut field. We hope to see you there. Wow! said Flo. I’m playing in the Cup Final on Saturday. Redland Rovers will win for sure.At 10 Elm Road, Pippa was also reading her letter. Dear Miss Jones, The Junior Cup Final is on Saturday at Redland Park. We hope to see you there. Fantastic, said Pippa. I’m riding Blossom in the Junior Cup. We are sure to win.2Pippa and Flo couldn’t wait for Saturday to come. They didn’t notice that they had got the wrong letter. They were both going to the wrong place. On Saturday morning Pippa rode Blossom to Redland Park. Down the road they passed Flo on her way to Chestnut Field. Pippa stared at Flo in her red and white football kit. Fancy dressing up like that to play a stupid game of football, she thought to herself. Flo stared at Pippa in her black riding hat and boots. Fancy dressing up like that to ride a boring old pony, she thought to herself.Pippa arrived at Redland Park. But where were the other ponies? All she could see was the Redland Rovers team kicking a ball. Excuse me, said Pippa. Where are the fences to jump? The Rovers team laughed. This is a football match. Ponies can’t play. said one. Rovers’captain went over to Pippa. Have you seen Flo Jones? She hasn’t come yet and we’re one player short. ‘I don’t know anyone called Flo,’said Pippa. ‘My name is Pippa Jones.’‘Well, you’ll have to play then,’said the captain. ‘Hurry up and get changed, kick-off is in five minutes.’Pippa was horrified. She didn’t want to play football. She wanted to ride Blossom in the Junior Cup. She tried to explain but the Rovers team didn’t listen. They pushed her into the changing room. They gave her football boots and a shirt. The shirt came to her knees. And the boots pinched her feet. When Pippa ran she kept tripping over her laces. They lined up for kick-off and the referee blew his whistle to start the game. The ball came whizzing towards Pippa. ‘What shall I do with it?’she wailed. ‘Just kick it that way,’shouted Rovers’captain. Pippa kicked the ball. ‘Youch, my toe.’she yelled. The ball went to one of the Blue team. Pippa tried to get it back. But she tripped over her laces and fell in a muddy puddle. ‘This is all a mistake.’moaned Pippa. ‘I’m in the wrong place.’3Flo was in the wrong place too. She was in Chestnut Field. But where was the Cup Final? All she could see were girls trotting round on ponies. ‘What is all this?’Flo asked a man in a brown hat. ‘It’s the Junior Show.I am Mr. Trotter, one of the judges. What is your name?’‘Flo Jones. I am here to play football.’Mr. Trotter wasn’t listening. He was busy looking at a list of names. ‘Ah yes. Here you are. Miss Jones. You are jumping twenty-third.’‘Jumping? Me?’Flo turned pale. ‘But I can’t ... I haven’t。

1A civilian named Shentu Dun in Luoyang obtained an unearthed tripod of the Han Dynasty from Shenchuan, Chang'an.On the tripod, the crisscross designs of clouds and ancient hornless dragons were bright and clear. Lu Sheng, his neighbour on the west, took a fancy to it instantly. He asked a coppersmithto cast a tripod in imitation, soaked and dyed it with a strange decoction, dug a pit and buried it underground. After three years, he dug it out. Owing to the decoction and corrosion of the earth, thecopper surface of the tripod changed and looked very much like Shentu Dun's genuine tripod. One day, Lu Sheng presented this fake tripod to an influential official, who was so pleased as if he had got a treasure that he invited guests to a banquet to appreciate it together. At the time, Shentu Dun was also present. He knew in his heart thatLu Sheng's tripod was a fake. He said: "I also have a tripod of about the same shape as this one. But I don't know whichone is genuine."The influential official asked him to fetch it at once. After he examined it for a long time, he said: "This one is not genuine."The guests also chimed in and said one after another: "It is indeed not genuine."Shentu Dun was quite perturbed and argued on just grounds, but the others rallied together to attack him, ridiculed and even insulted him, so he said no more. When he returned home, he sighed: "I didn't know until today the power of authority, which can confound right with wrong and pass off the fake as the real thing."

Fiona

”Fiona说。
“嗯”,Bertha说。

”
10. Bertha
”Fiona
”Fiona
”Bertha

”Bertha

”Fiona

”Fiona
20. Fiona
Fiona

”
21. Fiona
Bertha
”Fiona说。
”Bertha
”Bertha
”Fiona

”Bertha,
”Bertha
”Bertha说。
”Fiona
