新编大学英语视听说 book3 Unit 6听力答案与文本1Unit 6Part 1Listening IWoman: Why do you think people are afraid of tarantulasMan: Well, I guess it's because people are afraid of all spiders, and tarantulas happen to be the biggest of all the spiders. And maybe it's also because some spiders really are very poisonous. In California, for example—in most of the garages in California—you get black widows, which are quite small but certainly more dangerous than tarantulas. Woman: But personally you aren't afraid of tarantulasMan: Well, I shouldn't be frightened of tarantulas, simply because I know that they aren't really dangerous —all they can do is give you a small bite, but it's not poisonous. And yet I must say I don't like to pick them up. But you see, some people keep pet mice and pet rabbits and, well, they can give you a much worse bitethan a tarantula ever could. And yet people aren't frightened of them.Woman: Why do you think people are frightened of spidersMan: I don't know—it's very strange. People are frightened of spiders and they are frightened of snakes, and, well, obviously some spiders and some snakes really are poisonous. They say animals have a healthy effect on people, especially people who are sick and lonely.Several years ago, the Delta Society developed a program called \people work in pet therapy programs throughout the country. They take animals to visit people in hospitals, prisons and private homes. Dogs and cats are taken most often. But other visitors include snakes, rabbits, horses and birds. People feed the dolphins, touch them, and ride on the dolphins' backs in the water. In this way, the animals help the patients feel better. The head of the Delta Society, Linda Hines, says one reason for the pet therapy is that animals help sick people get better. 4 UNICEF wants people to know about the practical work of the organization and about the positive developments and efforts to help open schools for these children.
3 There are two things we can do: In the short term we could support UNICEF and charities which do good work for these children, and in the long term we could analyze the conditions that lead to conflicts and wars and try to think about how to prevent such events.
1.Example As children we used to play in the street or in the park, you know, running and chasing games and football. You don’t see that much now because all the children are playing computer games or playing games on their mobile phones. I am sure that in our games we got much more physical exercise.
Outside view 1 1 They might provide teachers and materials for literacy programmes and give vaccinations to children to prevent disease. 2 Not a lot, actually. We’ve seen something on TV about the war there.

You‘re suddenly getting excellent marks in every subject, and you used to be a bottom-of –class student just like me.W: Simple enough. I read an article in a scientific journalthat studying with remembering, based on recent research into the brain.M: Aw, that stuff‘s old hat: study at the same time every day, be sure your clothes are comfortable, and make sure you have enough light, blah-blah-blah.W: Not so fast, wise guy. I‘m talking about princi pleslike ―Mental Visualization‖, creating a picture in your mind of what is to be remembered.M: Ok, that dies sound different. Id ―Association‖ a principle—you know, you connect what you want to remember with something you‘re familiar with?W: Right on! ‗Consolidation‖ is another. I review my notesright after class and consolidate—or absorb—the new materialinto what I‘ve already learned.M: You‘re moving ahead fast with those principles. I swearthis weekend I‘m going to study sixteen hours a day both Saturday and Sunday.W: Whoa, big guy. That‘s not the way. Follow the principleof ―Distributes Practice‖. Shorter study sessions distributes over several days are better.M: That system is all very well for you; you‘ve got a good memory. But what about me? I‘ve got a memory like a sieve.W: You‘re too modest. There‘s nothing wrong with your memory. But memory is like a muscle; it needs exercise. And don‘t forget it.While the man is wondering why the woman is suddenly getting excellent marks, she says she read an article on studying and remembering. It talks about principles like ―Mental Visualization‖, that is, creating a picture in one‘s mind ofwhat is to be remembered. This reminds the man of the principleof ―Association‖, which means connecting what one wants to remember with something one is familiar with. Then the woman adds the principle of ―Consolidation‖, or reviewing one‘s notesafter class and absorbing the new material into what one hasalready learned. When the man promise to study sixteen hours a day, the woman recommends the principle of ―Distributed Practice‖, which favors shorter study sessions distributed over several days. Finally, the woman tells the man that memory is like a muscle, and that it needs exercise.Task 2: You forget my toast!ScriptAn 80-year-old couple was having problems remembering things, so they decide to go to their doctor to see what was wrong with them. They explained to the doctor about the problems they were having with their memory. After checking the couple over, thedoctor told them that theywere physically okay but might need to start writing things down to help them remember. The couple thanked the doctor and left.Later that night while watching TV, the old woman said to theol d man, ―Honey, will you please go to the kitchen and get me a dish of ice cream?‖Before the man left, she added, ―Why don‘t you write that down so you won‘t forget?‖ “Nonsense,‖ said the husband, ―I can remember a dish of ice cream!‖“Well,‖ said the wife, ―I‘d like some strawberries on it. You‘d better write that down because I know your memory is failing.‖“Don‘t be silly,‖ replied the husband. ―There‘re only two things: a dish of ice cream and some strawberries. I can surely remember that!‖With that, he rushed into the kitchen. After about twenty minutes he returned from the kitchen and handed her a plate of bacon and eggs. The wife took one look at the plate, glanced up at her husband, and said, ―Hey, you forget the toast!‖Keys: FTFFFTask3: Memory-Improving TechniquesScriptThere are many techniques you can use to improve your memory. Some of them are introduced her.First and foremost, you need to stimulate your memory all the time. To put it simply, you should use your memory as much as possible. It is especially important to try to learn something new. If you work in an office, learn to dance; if you are a dancer, learn to deal with a computer, if you work with sales, and learnto play chess; if you are a programmer, learn to paint. Theseadded activities stimulate the brain so that I t continues to function.Older people need to pay attention to things they are dealing with. Don‘t try to memorize everything that catches your attention; focus on what you consider important. For example, youcan take any object such as a pen and concentrate on it. Think onits various characteristics: its material, its function, its color, and so on. Don‘t allow any other thought to occupy your mindwhile you are concentrating in that pen.Another method that can be used is to relax yourself. It is impossible to remember things if you are tense or nervous. So, try holding your breath for ten seconds, and then releaseit slowly.Association is also a powerful tool to develop your memory. For example, if you cannot remember a person‘s name, you canthink about a special feature of his face and then link it withhis mane.1. What‘s seems to be an especially important way tostimulate one‘s memory?2. What seems to be the best way to focus your memory?3. How can you concentrate on a pen?4. Let‘s TalkScriptStudent: Professor, thank you for graining me this interview. I‘m Susan, a reporter from the Student Union magazine. Many students have difficultly memorizing things. Since you‗re an outstanding psychologist, could you give us some tips on how top improve our memory?Professor: Well, some people have better memories than others, but that‘s largely because they are better at creating mental images.Student: If I‘m not good at creating images, what can I do?Professor: Practice helps. And the mind remembers thingsbetter if they are connected with other images. For example, I you have to pick up several items at the grocery store, say, carrots, egg, bananas, and milk, you can create a picture in your mind of a giant carrot, and hanging from it, a banana.Student: Then I could have a giant milk carton pouring milk over the carrot and banana. Professor: Certainly. Then what would you do with the egg?Student: Hmmm. I‘d visualize an egg-shaped UFO flying across the sky.Professor: There you go. The more you apply the ideas, the easier it gets. Besides creating pictures, there‘s another technique that is very useful.Student: What is it?Professor: Establishing an association. Suppose you are looking for lost keys.Relax, and let your mind look for all the images connected with those keys--their feel, the sounds they make.Student: How will that help?Professor: You might remember the sound the keys made when you placed then in a drawer or cold touch of the keys in your jacket were you left them.Student: Oh my gosh! I have to run. It‘s time my English class. I see an image of my teacher staring at my empty seat in the classroom. Many thanks, Professor.Professor: Not at all, and good luck with your memory.Ways of Impro ving One‘s Memory ExamplesCreating imagesTo remember the items to buy sat the grocery store such as carrots, eggs, bananas, and milk Images that you may help:1.a giant carrot and a banana hanging from it2. a giant milk carton pouring milk over the carrot and banana3. an egg-shaped UFO flying across the skyEstablishing associationsTo find your lost keys Associations with sound touch that may help:1. The sound of the keys might remind you of y\having placed then in a drawer.2. The cold touch of the keys might remind you of them in your jacket.DiscussionSAMPLEA: As we just heard from the interview, the technique of associating certainly important in promoting memory.B: And according to the interview, creating images helps remember things. If your shopping list includes eggs, you might visualize an egg or an egg-shaped UFO flying across.A: Another important factor in improving memory can be of interest. If you get interested in something, you can remember it better.B: Yeah. And if you recognize facts into meaningful groups, you can remember them better. For instance, if you want to memorize all the names of American presidents, it is not easy. If,however, you arrange them chronologically into three periods: those before Abraham Lincoln, those between Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt, and those after, then the task will be less difficult.A: It is common sense that if you glance at something quickly, you tend to forget it quickly. If you stuffy it slowly, you can remember it better.B: Another technique is intensive practice or repeating. As a saying goes, practice makes perfect. If you repeat something again and again, you will eventually learn it by heart.A: But we should not work too hard. When we get tired, our learning efficiency declines. We need breaks so the mind can rest and absorb what has been learned.VI. Further Listening and SpeakingTask1: The Role Memory Plays in Our LifeScriptSince memory plays a significant role in our life, scrientists are increasingly interested in research on how to improver memory, Here are some factors they believe to be important to expanding memory capacity. To begin with, you must take special care in your daily life. Food for example, is very important. Some vitamins are essential foe your memory to work properly. They are found in bread, cereal, vegetables and fruits. Some experts say that synthesizes vitamins improve memory, but others have doubts about this, arguing that the studies have not confirmed they do work. Another essentialfactor is water. It helps to maintain the memory systems, especially in older persons. According to Dr. Roswell, lack of water in the body has an immediate and strong effect on memory; it can cause confusion and other thought difficulties. Sleep alsoplays a significant role. To be able to have a goof memory, wemust allow the brain to have plenty of rest. While sleeping, the brain no longer controls the senses, and starts to revise andstore the information one has receives. Lack of sleep would make one feel exhausted and would weaken one‘s ability to concentrate. Also, one‘ ability to store information would be affected.1. What is the passage mainly about?2. They were a hospitable couple whooften entertained their neighbors for drinks, tea or dinner. Onthis particular spring night, they have invited a retiredprofessor to super. During the evening, it began to pour with rain, and the heavens really opened. Because he had walked there, they offered to put him up for the night. They pointed out that by staying overnight, he did not need to go to out in the bad weather. He agreed on the soundness of that idea, thanked his hosts profusely, and the matter seemed to be settled. But while theywere washing the dishes after supper, the forgetful professor disappeared. No one could find him anywhere. Eventually, after40 minutes, the front door bell rang. There was the professor, soaked to the skin. When he was asked what on earth he has been dong inthe rain, he replied that because he was going to stay there overnight, he had gone home to get his pajamas and toothbrush.Task3: How to Remember NamesScriptYou just called the TV repair shop, and the voice on the other end of the line tells you, ―This is Don Smith‖.About 5 minutes later you tell your wife that ―this guy‖will be out to fix the TV in the morning. You can‘t think of his mane although you know he mentioned it on the phone. This happens all the time to just about any of us unless we have learned to concentrate and implant a name in our memory, right at the time we hear it. To do this, you must make a habit of repeating the name back to the person. This action will remind you to store the name in your ―memory bank‖ each time you hear someone‘s name, and within a short time the ―repeating‖ process can be discontinuedWhen you meet someone in person, use the same procedure, andin addition, visualize something different, unusual or ridiculous about hid or her appearance, position, or actions that ―tiesin ―with his or her name. Later, you may write the descriptive information on one side of a card and the name in the other side. Look at it repeatedly, see the ―picture‖ in your mind‘s eye asyou look at the name; or when you see he name, visualizethe ―picture‖ you have assigned to the name.Getting this system to work will require changes in your thinking, and it may take several days or several weeks to become proficient.News ReportA Dolphin ExhibitionScriptA recent art exhibition in Florida honored the animal often seen as man‘s most intelligent friend, the dolphin. The ―Dolphins on Parade‖ exhibition in the Florida Keys featured life-sized decorates dolphin paintings made of wood and the cost of materials. The dolphins were shown at area business and along the beach. Sponsors paid U.S. $750 to cover theartists‘ fee and the cost of materials. There were more than 100 dolphin themes, including a beer-belly dolphin. They showed the work of local artists, as well as the beach atmosphere the Keys are famous for.Probably the most unique was special because of its artist, Pandora. Pandora the dolphin painter is area dolphin, art the Dolphin Research center, in Marathon, Florida. The playful artist streaks colors across a dolphin painting holding a brush in its mouth. The exhibition was held by the Monroe [Florida] Council of the Arts as part of a plan to make the Keys an international arts center. The paintings were to be auctioned off in March, with the money earned going to community art programs.Uint2II. Basic Listening Practice1. Here, according to education experts and students themselves are the secrets of super-achievers.First, they know how to set priorities. Top students allow no intrusions on study time. Once the books are open or the computer is turned on, phone calls go unanswered, TV shows unwatched, snacks ignored. Study is business, and business comes before recreation. Also, good students can study anywhere and everywhere. Claudia Hill, an Arizona State University business professor recalls a cross-country runner who worked out every day. Hill persuaded him to use his spare time to memorize biology term. Then he posted a list of biology terms on the mirror in the bathroom. He learned a few terms every day while brushing his teeth. Eventually, he scored high on the final examination. Moreover, top students schedule their time well. Study times are strictly a matter of personal preference. Some work late at night when the house is quiet. Others awake early. Still others study as soon as they come home from school when the work is fresh in their minds. All agreed, however, on the need for consistency.A student says, ―Whateve r I was doing, I maintained a certain period of time every day for studying.‖Another important characteristic of super-achievers is that they know hoe to read, According to a book entitled Getting Straight A‘s, the secret of good reading is to be ―an ac tive reader-one whocontinually asks questions that lead to a full understanding of the author‘s message‖.1. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about super—achievers starting to study?2. What did the cross-country runner do to score high on the exam?3. On January 17, 1995, 5,273 persons were reported to have been killed by the Hanshin earthquake. Most victims were crushed to death by the collapse of their houses, and burned to death by the fires that followed the earthquake. Half of the people killed were over age 60.Among the victims, 59% were women, and 41% were men. The city's officials attributed the large number of deaths among the elderly to the growing number of younger people living in the suburbs, the fact that many elderly people lived alone in the quake-stricken areas, and the fact that a large number of homesin the area were built before and immediately after World War II. In the quake area, the old traditional Japanese wooden houses, designed to resist (抗拒) typhoons (台风), presented a poor resistance to the earthquake forces. It was reported that there were 164 independent fires, and that more than 50 percent of fires broke out 24 hours after the earthquake. A large number of fires were attributed to gas leaks, which were sparked (触发) by electrical short-circuits. More than 1,300,000 square meters were burned down.About 170,000 houses were destroyed or severely damaged. Many office and apartment buildings were also severely damaged. The number of refugees (难民) is reported to be in excess of 300,000.The earthquake has been called Japan's greatest postwar disaster. At the present, it is difficult to assess the total amount of damage to the Japanese economy.1.How did most victims die in the earthquake?2.What was the proportion of female victims to male victimsin the quake?3.When were the unsafe homes of old people built?4.What was the main cause for the fires?5.How many refugees were made by the earthquake?Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage or dialog. Cornton Vale is a new type of prison specially designed for women criminals in Scotland. The 226 prisoners there live in small units of seven rooms. There is a kitchen where they cook their own meals and a lounge (休息室) with fitted carpet and armchairs. The "wake-up, wake-up" call by loudspeaker (喇叭) at 7 every morning is followed by a music program, which creates the atmosphere (气氛) of a holiday camp. During the day, most of the prisoners are employed in three workshops, making toys or clothing. Their earnings—up to 90 pence a week—can be spent in the prison shop. The gymnasium, which also acts as a cinema and concert hall, has facilities (设施) for table tennis, basketball and dancing.Prisoners, particularly those with long sentences, are encouraged to be independent and take responsibility for themselves and others. This is in many ways much more demanding than simply serving time. Just as the deputy governor (长官)of this prison once said, "We try to preserve the prisoners' self-respect as much as possible, by imagining ourselves in their position." His words explain why this new prison is run in a unique way.6.What is Cornton Vale?7.What is used to make Cornton Vale seem like a holiday camp?8.Where do the women of Cornton Vale work, and what do theydo?9.Other than using the gym for tennis, basketball, anddancing, what is it used for?10.What is the purpose for running the prison this way?Part 3 Reading Comprehension (Multiple Choice) (每小题:分)Directions: Read the following passages carefully and choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D.Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage or dialog. The cost of helping someone with AIDS drugs is high. Pills costa lot of money. In Africa, AIDS drugs may cost more than a person makes in one year. At the same time, some American hospitals throw away a lot of pills. One man, named Lee Wildes, didn't think this was fair, so he decided to do something about it.Wildes lives in a small apartment in San Francisco. Every month, he sends AIDS drugs, which would've been thrown away, to Africa. His act of kindness has not been noticed much in his home country. In Africa though, he is well known. Many people in Africa send him e-mails, asking him for the medicine they need.Lee was a nurse. He knows that millions of dollars worth of drugs are thrown away. Five years ago he learned he was sick with HIV. Following this discovery, he took a vacation to Africa and saw many people there with AIDS. His visit caused him to begin sending drugs to Africa.Lee talks with doctors in Africa by mail, e-mail and telephone. With their help, he has gotten the names and addresses for a hundred people in six African countries. He fills the pill orders and he records what pills he sends to them. He even returns to Africa, once a year, to see the people he's helping.Giving left over drugs away is against the law, as is giving out drugs without a license. However, it is not likely he'll be taken to court for his kindly efforts. People who have discovered his actions have not caused problems for him. It spreads rich, muddy (泥泞的) soil from Ethiopia over its valley and forms deep stretches of green, fertile (肥沃的) lands along its banks. The settlers found that in the soft rich earth wheat and other crops could be planted, even without the use of the plough, and they began to make many settlements of farmers. In these early times they did not of course understand why the river overflowed each year. But they knew that their crops and, therefore, their lives, depended upon its magic (魔术似的) floods, and they explained the miracle as the work of gods. But there came some years when there was a "bad Nile". Sometimes the floods were not full and did not bring enough soil; the crops were poor and the people starved. At other times the waters were so great that they destroyed houses and villages, and drowned (淹死) men and beasts (牲畜). It took perhaps many centuries before the farmers learned how to control the Nile waters.Wise men among them watching the position of the stars year by year found that they could predict when the annual rising of the Nile would come. Thus they began to learn about the scientific study of the sun, earth, moon, and stars and could make a calendar of the years. They also learnt how to measure out the land so that it could be divided fairly again after the boundaries of the farms had been washed away by great floods. In this way, there came about ancient knowledge of engineering and of geometry.6.We can learn from this passage that the Nile is ______.A. always a gentle flowing riverB. hot in the first half of the year but cold later onC. likely to overflow at unknown times of the yearD. a life-giving river that makes the land rich7.The settlers began farming in the Nile valley because______.A. they discovered that their crops could grow well in thesoil thereB. they did not realize that the river would overflowsometimesC. they found many settlements of farmers in the valleyD. they realized that their crops depended on the floods8.The Nile was called the "bad Nile" at times because_______.A. the floods made the river difficult to controlB. the floods could only be predicted by wise menC. the river sometimes flooded too little or too muchD. the river took the good soil away to Ethiopia9.The Egyptians of that time learned to predict the floodsby _______.A. studying the flooding of the Nile year by yearB. observing the position of the stars year by yearC. inventing some maps of the Nile floodsD. developing engineering and measuring land10.According to the passage, the ancient Egyptians ________.A. had studied the stars and made their own calendar ofthe yearsB. watched the fall and rise of the Nile and learned howto control the floodC. discovered science before the peoples of other nationsD. learned a lot about geometry and spread the knowledgeall over the worldQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage or dialog.I don't have a strong village feeling. There is a little pub and that is where most people go, although I tend to avoid it. The village always wants to know what you are doing and if you don't have too much contact with it in the pub, then they don't learn too much. I just keep them guessing. The new people want a great community center. People who have just arrived in a village always want to do something in it or to it. What exactly they are going to have in this center I don't know. They keep talking about "amenities" (公共设施). I suppose they mean a car-park and a big smart room. The young village people don't want this. When their work is over they want to go off in their cars to the bright lights of Ipswich. The new people are often just kidding themselves that they are real village people. They don't just want to be accepted; they really want to take over the traditions. This is why they have come to live in a village. They want to do things "for the village" and it is all very exhausting if you happen to be an "old villager" and you just want to be left alone. What I cannot understand is why a person who has got the wit (才智) to make enough money to come and live comfortably in the country, and have a centrally-heated house and a car, should want to put on entertainment in a hut (小屋). These people are just playing at village life—kidding themselves that they are genuine country folk. They wear us out. When their work is done they want to play in the village and when our work is done we want to play outside it. I suppose that sums it up.11.We can learn from this passage that the writer ______.A. doesn't learn about what village people are doingB. tells the other village people about the pubC. never tells people anything about himselfD. doesn't often go to the village pub12.According to the passage, the young village people_______.A. want their pleasure outside the villageB. don't like going to the community centerC. don't like the new peopleD. want to see the latest group in the village13.In the writer's opinion, the new people _______.A. want to get rid of the old ways of the villageB. want to be left alone by people in the villageC. know that they aren't accepted by people in the villageD. do things that change the village from how it is14.The old village people _______.A. don't want to get rid of their old things for new thingsB. are not ready to accept the new people in their villageC. want a new community center with a place to parkD. want to go back to their own traditions15.It can be inferred from this passage that the author_______.A. likes to play at village lifeB. disagrees with the new peopleC. likes laughing at the new peopleD. wants the new people to go awayPart 4 Multiple Choice(每小题:分)Directions: Choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D.1.One of his eyes was injured in an accident, but after a______ operation, he quickly recovered his sight.A. delicateB. considerateC. preciseD. sensible2.Could you please _____ an appointment for me to see Mr.Smith?A. manageB. arrangeC. takeD. prepare3.Mr. Lewis broke the world ______ for the 100 meters.A. markB. standardC. levelD. record4.In American universities, classes are often arranged inmore flexible _____ and many jobs on campus are reserved for students.A. scalesB. patternsC. gradesD. ranksst year the advertising rate ________ by 20 percent.A. roseB. raisedC. arousedD. arose6.The guard walked through the train ______ everyone'sticket.A. inspectingB. overlookingC. reviewingD. analyzing7.Our holiday was _______ by showers of rain.A. spoiledB. destroyedC. crashedD. discouraged8.Students or teachers can participate in excursions (短途旅行) to lovely beaches around the island at regular ________.A. gapsB. rateC. intervalsD. length9.We were tired of hearing him ________ about how strong hewas.A. commentB. remarkC. referD. boast10.He played the guitar (吉他) so well that everyone was_______.A. affectedB. arousedC. effectedD. impressed11.Most nurses are women, but in the higher ranks of themedical profession women are in a _______.A. scarcityB. minorityC. minimumD. shortage12.My uncle rarely used to oversleep, _________?A. wasn't heB. didn't heC. was heD. did he13.Jack was about to announce our plan but I ________.A. put him throughB. turned him outC. gave him upD. cut him short14.Only after a long chat, _________ that Mr. Smith was infact a boss of a big factory.A. he realizedB. he has realizedC. did he realizeD. has realized he15.The room ________ cool in summer and warm in winter.A. feelsB. has been feltC. is feltD. has been feeling16.The goods piled up there require _______ carefully.A. to be looked afterB. looking afterC. being looked afterD. looked after17.There's a man at the reception desk who seems very angryand I think he means ________ trouble.A. makingC. to have madeD. having made18.I found him always _______ of others.A. thoughtB. thinkC. thinksD. thoughtful19.My wallet is nowhere to be found. If you can show them you’re an important official of the Student Union of the university or the department, or you’ve organized a singing competition and won an award, obviously you’re a good team player.Key:1. T 2. F 3. T 4. T 5. F 6. T 7. TTask 2 Are you ready for a phone interviewScript and keyNowadays, many employers use telephone interviews to screen candidates in order to narrow the pool of applicants who will be invited for in-person interviews. They are also used as a way to minimize the expenses involved in interviewing out-of-town candidates. While you're job-searching, it's important to be prepared for a phone interview on a moment's notice. You never know when a recruiter might call. So, you'd better take a look at the following phone interview tips. Before the interview, you should get well-prepared. For example, you can compile a list of your background and skills, your strengths and weaknesses, as well as a list of answers to typical phone interview questions You need to keep your resume on the top of your desk or tape it to the wall near the phone, so it's at your fingertips when you need to answer questions. Also, you should have a pen and paper handy for note taking. It's helpful to practice interviewing. You can rehearse answers to those typical questions you might be asked. Have a friend or family member conduct a mock interview and tape record it, so you can see how you sound over the phone. In this way, you'll be able to hear your "ums" and "uhs" and "OKs", and you can practice reducing them from your conversational speech.During the phone interview, try to smile. Smiling will project a positive image to the listener and will change the tone of your voice. Over the phone, you must speak slowly, clearly and politely. You should use the interviewer's title (Mr. or Ms. and their last name), and remember to only use a first name if they ask you to. It is essential not to interrupt the interviewer. On your part, you should try to give answers that are short and to the point. Finally, remember your goal is to set up a face-to-face interview. After you thank the interviewer, ask if it would be possible to meet in person.Questions and key1. Your resume is usually the first impression an employer has of you. And as “you never get a second chance to make a first impression”, you‘d better get it right firs time. Here’re some suggestions that may be of use in preparing a resume. First, use a design that demands attention. Employers don’t have time to read through each of your job descriptions to know if you have the skills they need. The design of your resume must do it for them. Your resume should be concise, well-organized and relevant. It should emphasized the most important and relevant points about your experience, skills and education.Second, put important information first. List important information at the beginning of your job descriptions. Put statements in your resume in order of importance and relevance to the job you want. A powerful statement with exact numbers influences every statement that follows.Third, target the job. You will have more success if you adjust your resume and cover letter for the specific skills another job. In other words, you need to “re-package” yourself. In that way, an employer will see immediately that you correspond to the job description. It is not dishonest to “re-package”yourself. You are simply pressing yourself and your skills in the best light for a particular employer. This will help you to get more interviews and allow you to apply for a wider range o jobs.1.Why does the speaker say the resume is important?2.Which of the following will NOT be regarded as a feature of good resume?3.Where should you put the important information in your job descriptions according to the passage?4.How many resumes would the speaker advise you to write if you applied for three jobs?5. What is the passage mainly about?Keys: 1.C 2.A 3.A 4.C 5.BIV. Speaking OutMODEL 1 Can you give me some tips about how to get a good job? Susan: John, can you give me some tips about how to get a good job?John: Did you go to the job fairs and meet with companies?Susan: Yeah, I did. But they didn’t seem to be interested in women.I thought about suing then for sexual discrimination.John: I’m afraid it won’t be much help. Have you looked at the want ads in the newspaper? Susan: I’ve been checking the want ads every day for a week, but I can’t find anything interesting that I’m qualified for. And the few that I have seen are very low-paying.John: Then try the Internet. You can use a search engine to find a job site related to your field. Susan: Good thinking! Thanks! I think I’ll look for something in electronic engineering.John: Hey, I just saw a job opening at a company called E-Tech. It could be just the sort of thing you’re looking for.Susan: Great, I’ll try my luck there.John: Yeah, but if I remember, the deadline is this afternoon.Susan: This afternoon? Oh no! I’d better get online quickly and see if I can submit my resume by E-mail.John:Wait, have you updated your resume? You’d better include your work experience from the IT company last summer.Susan: Don’t worry. It’s all set. Thanks, mate.John:Any time, Sue.MODEL2 Do you have any tips for a successful interview?ScriptSusan: John, do you have any tips for a successful interview?John: Well, first of all, you need to dress professionally.Susan: Oh, what about during the interview?John: Ok, be sure to maintain good eye contact and answer all questions politely and directly. Don’t look too shy, nor should you sound too aggressive.Susan: I’m not sure what kind of questions they’ll ask.John: They’ll probably want to know a little about your work experience. Many companies don’t wanta completely green hand. They don’t want to spend time and money on training.Susan: Fortunately, I gained some experience at an IT company during the last summer holiday. John: They may also want to know something about your character. You see, ability for teamwork is usually valued.Susan: What kind of questions should I ask them?John: You should ask them about the job requirements and about the company.Susan: Should I ask about salary and fringe benefits?John: Better not. Not unless they bring it up. Just use the first interview to sell yourself.Susan: You’re right. If they are interested in hiring me, there will be plenty of chances to talk about money later.John: Right. And the more interested they are, the more they’ll offer.MODEL3 Our best bet is to recruit from the competition.ScriptHelen: Our company is starting from scratch, so we don’t have the expertise to compete.Bill: Then our best bet is to recruit from the competition.Helen: We need managers who know how to be strong, yet know how to give employees their freedom.Bill:That’s essential, especially in the computer industry. Often computer experts like to work on their own.Helen: We also don’t believe that a right management system will work wonders for our company. Bill: Um…that philosophy will help you attract many worthwhile people.Helen: I remember your friend David Miller is the CEO of a management recruitment agency. I hope he’ll help us start a recruitment drive.Bill: Certainly. And it’s a good time, too. A number of firms have been downsizing.Helen: Good. So lots of capable people out there are interested in bigger and batter things. But can David help us pin them down?Bill: Sure, Helen! That’s why they call them headhunters. Now Y our TurnSAMPLE DIALOGA: Can you give me some advice on how to succeed in an interview?B: Well, first of all, you need to pay attention to your appearance. You have to dress appropriately.A: What do you mean by appropriately?B: It’s often best to wear a suit. Some bosses don’t like to see a candidate on a dirty T-shirt and jeans. A: I see. Careless clothes may be an indicator of careless attitude in work.B: Right on. Also, many employers are unwilling to hire a young man with his hair dyed red or yellow. A: Then, what about during the interview?B: You should speak politely but firmly. If you look too shy, they may suspect you are not capable of dealing with a challenging task.A: I’m not sure what kind of questions they’ll ask.B: They’ll probably want to know something about your work experience. Companies usually don’t want an entirely new hand. They don’t want to spend time and money on training.A: Fortunately, I gained some experience at a law of firm during the last summer holiday. I worked as an intern to provide free legal advice for those who need it.B: Oh. I see, this is what they called “legal assistance to the needy”. Also, a company may want to know something about your character. You see, team players are often valued above all others.A: What kind of questions should I ask them?B: You should ask them about the job requirements and about the company.A: I hear that many companies asked the candidates what salary they expect.B: That’s true. You have to inquire about the possible salary level for a green hand in advance. If the salary you expect is reasonable, this shows that you know the professions well and will have a good impression on the interviewer.A: Oh, I’ve learned so much from you. A thousand thanks.V. Let’s TalkScriptV oice-over:T-Mobile is a subsidiary of Deutsche Telecom, the giant German telephone company.T-Mobile is their global mobile phone operation. Nine hundred people work at thecompany's call centre in Greenock, which was set up only five years ago; 760 of them areemployed in handling customer calls and they are managed by 70 team managers and 10operations managers. In a large-scale operation like this, the role of recruitment and trainingis the responsibility of a dedicated on-site human resources department.Woman: We have a training team, headed up by two leading advisers and supported by a number of customer-facing advisers who've been moved into the role of training. The theory behind is,these are the people who are doing the job, are in the best place to train that job to otherpeople.[On-screen text: Helen Young, Human Resources Adviser]Helen: Our recruitment is divided into two main sections. We have a CSA recruitment: Customer Service Adviser, and we also have all the other recruitment. It's crucial to us that we get the right people for the job, absolutely crucial, and we do whatever possible to ensure that people have realistic expectations of the job before they, before they're made an offer.Helen: In the initial stages they'd be given a telephone interview which would last somewhere in the region of 15 minutes. Following that, they'd be invited to come on-site. They'd have a tour of the centre. They then get, if you like, an opportunity to try us on for size. They get to see the role, they get to see how it feels, feel the culture of the company and if they're still happy at that stage and want to apply, then they need to do so formally. They would then complete an application form and be brought on-site for a two-hour assessment. The assessment consists of a role-play, which looks at their customer service ability and a competency interview. We need people who have the ability to communicate well and deliver the customer service that we want to deliver. And my primary responsibilities were to maintain the company’s ties with the existing customers and try to find new cargo sources.M: And what did that experience teach you?W: I learned that communication skills are extremely important. The knowledge I acquired from textbooks is indeed, but it is equally essential to be able to persuade a potential client t to trust you. M: How would your former employer describe you?W: He told me that my ability to find one customer after another was an asset to the company. He thanked me for my loyalty. He also appreciated my team as shown in my cooperation with my colleague.M: You seem very mature for your age. And I see from your resume that you are very goal-oriented. W: Thank you. I believe I’ve acquired many good qualities from my parents. They’re my role models. However, I know I still have a lot to learn. The woman went from Guilin City to the east coast city of Qingdao to attend college. She was impressed by the latter’s dynamic economy. Now shi is being interviewed for a job. She says she once worked as an intern for a small shipping company to maintain the company’s ties with the existing customers and try to find new cargo sources. There she learned the importance of communication skills. She has realized that book knowledge is indeed necessary, but it is equally essential to persuade potential clients to trust her. Her former employer said her ability to find customers was an asset to the company. He appreciated the loyalty and team spirit. The interviewer finds her mature for her age and very goal-oriented. And she believes that she has acquired many good qualities form her parents, but still has a lot to learn.Task 2: A Work Qualification TestScriptMurphy applies for an engineering position at an Irish firm based in Dublin. An American applied for the same job. Quite by coincidence, the two amplifications, and were asked to take the same test by the manager of the Human Resource Department. Upon completion of the test, both men missed only one of the questions. The manager went to Murphy and said, “Thank you for your interest, but we’ve decided to give the American the job.”Bewildered by the manager’s decision, Murphy asked, “Why would you be doing that? We both got nine questions correct. This being Ireland and me being Irish, I should get the job!”The manger answered calmly, “We have made our decisions based on the correct answers, but on the question you missed.”Unconvinced and somewhat indignant, Murphy question, “And just how would one incorrect answer be better than the other?”The manager’s maser took him by surprise, “Simple, on QuestionNo.5, the American put down ‘I don’t’ know’, and you put down ‘Neither do I’.”Key: 1. Don’t panic, they just want to see how you handle a difficult situation. Being prepared is always the best policy. Here are some samples of questions and some advice on how to handle them properly. Why should we choose you? To this question, you can ask yourself why you applied, what makes you suitable for this question, what the company can gain from hiring you, what you have to offer, how you would handle this jib, etc.Often they ask you to tell them about yourself. You can split your answer into two, the professional and the personal level. Both are important, and how you move from one to the other depends on what you have to say. You can give a brief summary of your life, professional and personal, with lessemphasis on the early past, and more emphasis on the present and the future. When asked “What are your weakness?”, don’t say, “I don’t have any.” Everyone has weakness, and it takes s omething positive like, “I haven’t had a lot of exposure on the on-site work, but I’m looking forward to being more involved in dealing with customers directly and learning their needs.”Another common question is: “What are your strengths?”You should customize your answer to meet the position requirement. Keep in mind the things they asked for in the advertisement. Tell them your strengths, but also show them how they how they would apply to this job. To show how your strengths were valuable, use the “Why, where, when, how” to demonstrate and prove your strengths.1.What is the passage mainly concerned with?2.What does the speaker NOT mention as an answer to the question, “Why should we choose you?”?3.What does the speaker say you should stress when introducing yourself?4.What does the speaker advice you NOT to say when asked, “What are your weaknesses?”5.What should you say when asked about your strong points?Key: 1C 2.C3. Listening SkillsQuestion 1W: OK, it's your turn to pay the bill. I paid last time.M: What? You have a selective memory. You tried to pay last time, but your credit card failed; so I ended up paying! It's definitely your turn.Q: What is true according to the conversation?Key: CQuestion 2M: I'm having real trouble reviewing for this French exam. I just can't memorize all the vocabulary.W: Me too, I hate having to learn things by heart. I guess we just have to keep reading the texts over and over.Q: What does the woman prefer?Key: DQuestion 3W: Oh look! There's that guy we saw last week, playing football in the park! He looked great in his kit, remember? M: Him? I don't remember him. I've got a terrible memory for faces. I have a hard time even recognizing people I've been introduced to.Q: According to the conversation, what is the man's problem?Key: AQuestion 4M: Why is there a big sign on the back of your door that says "keys"?W: It's to remind me to take my keys when I go out because I'm always locking myself out by accident! It doesn't help though. Now I just forget to read the sign.Q: Why is there a sign on the back of the door?Key: BQuestion 5M: That history exam was really hard. The essay question was terrible!W: I know, I wish I were like David. He has a photographic memory, you know. How useful that would be!Q: What is true of David?Key AIII. Listening InTask 1: Is your memory in good shape?M: Tell me your secret. You're suddenly getting excellent marks in every subject, and you used to be a bottom-of- the-class student just like me.W: Simple enough. I read an article in a scientific journal that linked studying with remembering, based on recent research into the brain.M: Aw, that stuff's old hat: study at the same time every day, be sure your clothes are comfortable, make sure you have enough light, blah-blah-blah.W: Not so fast, wise guy. I'm talking about principles like "Mental Visualization", creating a picture in your mind of what is to be remembered.M" OK, that does sound different. Is "Association" a principle--you know, you connect what you want to remember with something you're familiar with?W: Right on! "Consolidation" is another. I review my notes right after class and consolidate---or absorb--the new material into what I've already learned.M: You're moving ahead fast with those principles. I swear this weekend I'm going to study sixteen hours a day both Saturday and Sunday.W: Whoa, big guy. That's not the way. Follow the principle of "Distributed Practice". Shorter study sessions distributed over several days are better.M: That system is all very well for you; you've got a good memory. But what about me? I've got a memory like a sieve.W: You're too modest. There's nothing wrong with your memory. But memory is like a muscle; it needs exercise. And don't forget it.Key: While the man is wondering why the woman is suddenly getting excellent marks, she says she read an article on studying and remembering. It talks about principles like "Mental Visualization", that is, creating a picture in one's mind of what is to be remembered. This reminds the man of the principle of "Association", which means connecting what one wants to remember with something one is familiar with. Then the woman adds theprinciple of "Consolidation", or reviewing one's notes after class and absorbing the new material into what one has already learned. When the man promises to study six-teen hours a day, the woman recommends the principle of "Distributed Practice", which favors shorter study sessions distributed over several days. Finally, the woman tells the man that memory is like a muscle, and that it needs exercise.Task 2: You forgot my toast! An 80-year-old couple was having problems remembering things, so they decided to go to their doctor to see what was wrong with them. They explained to the doctor about the problems they were having with their memory. After checking the couple over, the doctor told them that they were physically okay but might need to start writing things down to t~elp them remember. The couple thanked the doctor and left.Later that night while watching TV, the old woman said to the old man, "Honey, will you please go to the kitchen and get me a dish of ice cream?"Before the old man left, she added, "Why don't you write that down so you won't forget?""Nonsense," said the husband, "I can remember a dish of ice cream !""Well," said the wife, "I'd also like some strawberries on it. You'd better write that down because I know your memory is failing.""Don't be silly," replied the husband. "There're only two things: a dish of ice cream and some strawberries. I can surely remember that!"With that, he rushed into the kitchen. After about twenty minutes he returned from the kitchen and handed her a plate of bacon and eggs. The wife took one look at the plate, glanced up at her husband, and said, "Hey, you forgot the toast!"F 1. The couple went to their doctor to have a complete physical checkup.T 2. At first the wife asked the husband to get her only ice cream.F 3. The husband refused to write a note, for he believed he could remember the toast.F 4. Finally, the husband brought the wife both ice cream and strawberries.F 5. The wife blamed the husband for forgetting to bring her ice cream and strawberries. For Reference1. He thought he could remember two things--a dish of ice cream and some strawberries.2. She took one look at the plate, glanced up at him, and blamed him for forgetting her toast.Task 3: Memory-Improving TechniquesThere are many techniques you can use to improve your memory. Some of them are introduced here.First and foremost, you need to stimulate your memory all the time. To put it simply, you should use your memory as much as possible. It is especially important to try to learn something new. If you work in an office, learn to dance; if you are a dancer, learn to deal with a computer; if you work with sales, learn to play chess; if you are a programmer, learn to paint. These added activities stimulate the brain so that it continues to function.Older people need to pay attention to things they are dealing with. Don't try to memorize everything that catches your attention; focus on what you consider important. For example, you can take any object such as a pen and concentrate on it. Think on its various characteristics: its material, its function, its color, and so on. Don't allow any other thought to occupy your mind while you are concentrating on that pen.Another method that can be used is to relax yourself. It is impossible to remember things if you are tense or nervous. So, try holding your breath for ten seconds, and then release it slowly.Association is also a powerful tool to develop your memory. For example, if you cannot remember a person's name, you can think about a special feature of his face and then link it with his name.Questions:1. What seems to be an especially important way to stimulate one's memory?A) Learning different things.2. What seems to be the best way to focus your attention?C) Concentrating only on what is important.3. How can you concentrate on a pen?D) You can focus on its features.4. How can you relax yourself according to the passage?B) You can stop breathing in for a short time, and then breathe out slowly.5. What is the main idea of the passage?D) Memory-developing skills. For ReferenceStimulating one's memory, paying attention (or focusing/concentrating one's attention), relaxing, and making associations.IV. Speaking OutMODEL 1 It slipped my mind!Amy: I sent out the invitations to the dinner party.Bill: That's good. Now what should we do?Amy: We've got to plan the menu.Bill: Oh, that's right. Do you have anything in mind?Amy: I think I'm going to make the chicken salad we had at the Christmas party. Remember I asked the chef for the recipe?Bill: Yeah, but did you forget that Linda doesn't eat chicken?Amy: Linda? Oh, my gosh! I forgot to invite Linda! It just slipped my mind. She'll be mad at me.Bill: Well, everyone forgets something sometimes. It's not too late yet. I'll make a phone call. Don't worry.Amy: Thanks! You see, I'm getting forgetful. I think I'm getting old!Bill: Looks like you are, sweetheart. Now Your TurnSAMPLE DIALOGA: I'm going to throw a party, and I've sent out the invitations to my friends and relatives.B: That's good. But don't forget to invite everyone you should invite.A: I think I've invited everyone. Do you have anybody in mind?B: Did you invite John? He's lost his job after a recent quarrel with his boss.A: Oh, my gosh! I forgot to invite him! He'll be sad, thinking we look down on him. He just slipped my mind.B: Well, everyone forgets something sometimes. Don't worry. It's not too late. Make a phone call right away.A" Did I forget anybody else that I should invite?B: There's yet another person you should invite--Julia. She's just moved to the city and feels lonely.A: Oh, good heavens, I forgot all about her. She's our new friend. You see, I'm getting forgetful. I think I'm getting old!B: Looks like you are, buddy. You'd better start writing things down if they're important.MODEL 2 I can’t think of it off the top of my headJohn: Hey, Sue. Do you know what Jack's home phone number is?Susan: I can't think of it off the top of my head. I don't have my address book on me, and I don't have my mobile phone with me, either.John: That's too bad! I've got to find him now. It's urgent! If I can't find him today, I'll be dead!Susan: You might want to look it up in the phone book.John: I've checked already, but it seems that his phone number is unlisted.Susan: Maybe it's under his roommate's name.John: Well, I guess so.Susan: Well, why don't you call Jane? She has his phone number.John: I've tried, but no one answered!Susan: Maybe call his office and ask his secretary.John: I've already tried. She won't tell me. She says it's private.Susan: Oh, that's right. They usually don't release private information over the phone.John: It's a pity. You usually have a powerful memory, but you can't help today. What's wrong with you? Your memory seems to be fading early.Susan: It's not that my memory is fading. I do have a good memory for faces and names, but a poor one for numbers and dates. Now Your TurnSAMPLE DIALOGA: Hey, do you remember when is the lecture on the value of information by Professor Smith?B: I can't think of it off the top of my head. Maybe we can look it up in our notebooks, but I don't have mine with me. A: That's too bad! I don't have it with me, either. Do you remember the number of the lecture hall?B: Sorry, I can't think of it off hand.A: I'm terribly interested in the lecture. I can't miss it!B: Well, why don't you call the dean who arranged the lecture?A: I'm afraid it's not very wise to ask the dean directly.B: Then maybe you can call the office of the department and ask the secretary.A: I've already tried, but no one answered.B: Oh!A: You usually have a powerful memory, but you can't help today. Your memory seems to be fading early.B: It's not that my memory is fading. I do have a good memory for faces and names, but a poor one for numbers and dates.MODEL 3 What’s wrong with your memory?Bill: Hi, honey! My trip to London was wonderful.Amy: Tell me what thrilled you most.[The telephone rings and Bill answers it....He hangs up. ]Bill: Er, where was I?Amy: You were talking about your tour in London.Bill: Oh, yeah.Amy: I bet you had a great time.Bill: Yes, I particularly enjoyed visiting the Tower of London.Amy: How did you get there? By bus or underground?Bill: Let me see....Sorry, I can't remember any more.Amy: What's wrong with your memory?Bill: I hope it's not Alzheimer's disease. I don't want to forget my own name.Amy: I don't think so. Perhaps it's just temporary forgetfulness. You'll be all right after a good sleep.Bill: I hope so. But as this is happening so often recently, I think I must go to see a doctor and get some pills. Amy: It's not as serious as that. Anyway, I wish you had a good memory for happy events, and a bad one for unhappy things. Now Your TurnSAMPLE DIALOGA: Hey, my trip to Beijing was fantastic.B: Tell me what interested you most.[The door bell rings and A answers it....A comes back.]A: Well, where was I?B: You were talking about your tour in Beijing.A: Oh, yeah.B: I bet you had a great time.A: Yes, I particularly enjoyed visiting the Forbidden City and the Great Wall, though the admission fees were a bittoo high for me.B: What were the fees?A: Let me see....Sorry, I can't remember any more.B: What's wrong with your memory?A: I hope it's not Alzheimer's disease. I don't want to see a lot of new people everyday.B: I don't think so. Perhaps you only forget things momentarily. You'll be all right after a good sleep.A: I hope so. But as this happens so often recently, I think I have to go to see a doctor.B: I don't think it's so serious. Anyway, a bad memory helps you to forget your troubles.V. Let’s TalkHow to improve your MemoryStudent: Professor, thank you for granting me this interview. I'm Susan, a reporter from the Student Union magazine. Many students have difficulty memorizing things. Since you're an outstanding psychologist, could you give us some tips on how to improve our memory?Professor: Well, some people have better memories than others, but that's largely because they are better at creating mental images.Student: If I'm not good at creating images, what can I do?Professor: Practice helps. And the mind remembers things better if they are connected with other images. For example, if you have to pick up several items at the grocery store, say, carrots, eggs, bananas, and milk, you can create a picture in your mind of a giant carrot, and hanging from it, a banana.Student: Then I could have a giant milk carton pouring milk over the carrot and banana.Professor: Certainly. Then what would you do with the egg?Student: Hmmm. I'd visualize an egg-shaped UFO flying across the sky.Professor: There you go. The more you apply the ideas, the easier it gets. Besides creating pictures, there's another technique that is very useful.Student: What is it?Professor: Establishing an association. Suppose you are looking for lost keys. Relax, and let your mind look for all the images connected with those keys -- their feel, the sounds they make.Student: How will that help?Professor: You might remember the sound the keys made when you placed them in a drawer or the cold touch of the keys in your jacket where you left them.Student: Oh my gosh! I have to run. It's time for my English class. I see an image of my teacher staring at my empty seat in the classroom. Many thanks, Professor.Professor: Not at all, and good luck with your memory.VI . Further Listening and SpeakingListeningTask 1: The role Memory Plays in Our LifeSince memory plays a significant role in our life, scientists are increasingly interested in research on how to improve memory. Here are some factors they believe to be important in expanding memory capacity. To begin with, you must take special care in your daily life. Food for example, is very important. Some vitamins are essential for your memory to work properly. They are found in bread, cereal, vegetables and fruits. Some experts say that synthesized vitamins improve memory, but others have doubts about this, arguing that the studies have not confirmed they do work. Another essential factor is water. It helps to maintain the memory systems, especially in older persons. According to Dr. Rosewell, lack of water in the body has an immediate and strong effect on memory; it can cause confusion and other thought difficulties. Sleep also plays a significant role. To be able to have a good memory, we must allow the brain to have plenty of rest. While sleeping, the brain no longer controls the senses, and starts to revise and store the information one has received. Lack of sleep would make one feel exhausted and would weaken one's ability to concentrate. Also, one's ability to store information would be affected.Keys:1. What is the passage mainly about?A) Factors related to memory development.2. Why are foods important in promoting memory according to the passage?B) They contain vitamins.3. To whom is water especially important in maintaining the memory system?D) Older people.4. What problem can a lack of water cause?D) All of the above.5. Why is sleep important to memory?C) Sleep helps the brain to revise and store information.Task 2: Where did the professor go?This is a true story, which happened to friends of ours in a small town in South Africa. They were a hospitable couple who often entertained their neighbors for drinks, tea or dinner. On this particular spring night, they had invited a retired professor to supper. During the evening, it began to pour with rain, and the heavens really opened. Because he had walked there, they offered to put him up for the night. They pointed out that by staying overnight, he did not need to go out in the bad weather. He agreed on the soundness of that idea, thanked his hosts profusely, and the matter seemed to be settled. But while they were washing the dishes after supper, the forgetful professor disappeared. No one could find him anywhere. Eventually, after about 40 minutes, the front door bell rang. There was the professor, soaked to the skin. When he was asked what on earth he had been doing in the rain, he replied that because he was going to stay there overnight, he had gone home to get his pajamas and toothbrush.Task 3: How to Remember NamesYou just called the TV repair shop, and the voice on the other end of the line tells you, "This is Don Smith". About 5 minutes later you tell your wife that "this guy" will be out to fix the TV in the morning. You can't think of his name although you know he mentioned it on the phone. This happens all the time to just about any of us unless we have learned to concentrate and implant a name in our memory, right at the time we hear it. To do this, you must make a habit of repeating the name back to the person. This action will remind you to store the name in your "memory bank" each time you hear someone's name, and within a short time the "repeating" process can be discontinued. When you meet someone in person, use the same procedure, and in addition, visualize something different, unusual or ridiculous about his or her appearance, position, or actions that "ties in" with his or her name. Later, you may write the descriptive information on one side of a card and the name on the other side. Look at it repeatedly, see the "picture" in your mind's eye as you look at the name; or when you see the name, visualize the "picture" you haveassigned to the name.Getting this system to work will require changes in your thinking, and it may take several days or several weeks to become proficient. For Reference1. Maybe we can't think of the name.2. We can repeat the name back to the person.3. We can repeat the name. In addition, we can visualize something different, unusual, or ridiculous about his or her appearance, position, or actions that "ties in" with his or her name.4. The descriptive information on one side of the card and the name on the other side.5. We can look at it repeatedly, see the "picture" in our mind's eye as we look at the name; or when we see the name, visualize the "picture" we have assigned to the name.News Report: A Dolphin ExhibitionA recent art exhibition in Florida honored the animal often seen as man's most intelligent friend, the dolphin. The "Dolphins on Parade" exhibition in the Florida Keys featured life-sized decorated dolphin paintings made of wood and other materials. The dolphins were shown at area businesses and along the beach. Sponsors paid U.S.$750 to cover the artists' fee and the cost of materials. There were more than 100 dolphin themes, including a beer-belly dolphin. They showed the work of local artists, as well as the beach atmosphere the Keys are famous for.Probably the most unique was special because of its artist, Pandora. Pandora the dolphin painter is a real dolphin, at the Dolphin Research Center, in Marathon, Florida. The playful artist streaks colors across a dolphin painting, holding a brush in its mouth. The exhibition was held by the Monroe [Florida] Council of the Arts as part of a plan to make the Keys an international arts center. The paintings were to be auctioned off in March, with the money earned going to community art programs.。

Book 3Unit 1HOME LISTENINGaudio SCRIPTTarantula PetsIn recent years, tarantulas have become increasingly popular as pets. For many people, caring for these creatures has become an enormously entertaining and educational hobby. There are over 800 different species to choose from and the majority of them are very easy to care for. Handling a tarantulaWhen one is considering getting a tarantula, it is important to be aware that experts do not advocate handling them regularly. Not to protect the pet owner, but to prevent stress and injury to the spider. Tarantulas are not aggressive unless threatened by an abrupt motion, so gentle handling isn’t usually a problem. If a person is bitten, the bite generally only causes redness and swelling similar to a bee sting. However, even a short fall can cause the delicate outer covering of the tarantula’s body, its “carapace,” to break, causing it to bleed to death.Choosing a tarantulaTarantulas can be purchased in pet stores, at pet shows, or even over the Internet. It is advisable to buy a spider only from a knowledgeable dealer who knows its exact scientific name and has already determined its sex. Knowing the species is important because each one requires slightly different care and feeding. Being aware of the sex is important because female tarantulas live much longer than males. A typical female can live for as long as 20 years, while most males die within a year or two. The most important aspect of purchasing a tarantula is making sure that it is healthy. A tarantula that is shrinking back in a corner with its legs pulled in under itself is probably dying.Caring for a tarantulaFor the most part, adult tarantulas require very little care. They should be fed once a week but can easily last for two weeks without any food. The cage requires only an annual cleaning. However, a tarantula regularly goes through a process called “molting” in which it works its soft inner body out of its existing carapace and produces a new one. During the process, the spider’s soft inner body is temporarily exposed and it can easily be injured or killed. It is essential not to disturb the spider during this process and, if there are signs that the tarantula is bleeding (its blood is pale blue), it may be necessary to coat the injured area with a hard substance to stop the loss of blood.Word bank1. advocate vt. support or recommend publiclye.g. Experts do not advocate handling tarantulas very frequently. The democratic party does not advocate higher taxes.2. delicate adj. exquisite, fine, or subtle in quality, character, construction, etce.g. It might be hard to imagine that the king of spiders, the tarantula, is actually very delicate. This is such a delicate piece of art that you should keep it out of reach of children.3. typical adj. being or serving as a representative example of a particular type; characteristice.g. This painting is typical of his work. You’d better find a typical example to illustrate the phenomenon.HOME LISTENINGI. They exist only in Australia, and in the early 1900s, a demand for coats made from the soft, gray fur of these animals threatened to destroy the entire species. In the 1930s the Australian government passed legislation to protect the animals, but that didn't solve the problem. Since then, the clearing of land for development has displaced large numbers of koalas and resulted in an even greater threat to the survival of the species.Luckily, as urban development continues to spread, some Australian construction companies are trying to find ways to balance the issues. They are working to create new housing for humans, while giving priority to protecting the habitat of the koalas. The developers of Koala Beach Estates on the north coast of New South Wales have managed to do just that. They've been able to follow the dictates of an ecologically sensitive building program, while also providing an attractive living environment for people.Work on the project began in 1993 with a thorough survey of the local koala population. First, a researcher for the Australian Koala Foundation fitted koalas in the area with radio transmitters. The information gathered by the researcher showed which koalas were permanent residents and which were visitors, and also which areas of the proposed development even which specific trees were used by the koalas. As a result of this study, the entire housing development was designed around the koalas habitats.Other koala-friendly components were included at Koala Beach Estates. Dogs and cats were banned from the development because they sometimes kill koalas. Planners also provided "traffic calming elements such as speed prevention methods and warning signs to protect the animals from cars. Since koalas have favorite paths between food trees, all fences were raised 30 centimeters above the ground to allow them to pass easily underneath. Ropes were placed in swimming pools so koalas could climb out if they fell in. An enormous amount of careful planning went into the project, which resulted in a pleasant coincidence; twenty-five other rare or endangered species including bats, frogs, and birds ultimately chose Koala Beach as their home. This bonus has increased homeowners excitement over this outstanding wildlife-friendlycommunity even more than expected.Word bank1. priority n. right to have or do something before otherse.g. I have priority over you in my claim. The Government gave (top) priority to reforming the legal system.Collocationgive priority to 给予优先权have priority over 有优先权get one's priorities right/wrong 能/不能按轻重缓急行事2. estate n. a landed property, usually of considerable sizee.g. He owns a large estate in Wales.3. dictate n. Fifty years ago, the population was 32,000 and Main Street was the center of everything. People went there to shop, eat in restaurants, see movies, and sometimes just walk around and visit with people. Today, Albion’s population is over 80,000 and nobody even thinks about going downtown. We shop at malls and shopping centers and on the Internet. We take out fast food and stay home and watch TV. Most of the downtown businesses have closed, putting people out of work, and taking away thousands of dollars of city tax revenues.I advocate a radical proposal to turn things around. Let’s declare the four block area to the north of Main Street a pedestrian-only zone. Once we accomplish that, we can begin creating a lively street scene with antique stores, open-air markets, sidewalk cafés, and street musicians or other performers. Instead of going to another city for entertainment, people may start making downtown Albion their free-time destination. Parents can bring their children, and teenagers would be able to get together in a safe, public setting. New public transportation options could encourage people to leave their cars at home and provide the city with additional income. The changes could also have economic benefits for the city. Art galleries, clothing stores, and other businesses might begin to convert the abandoned stores into new businesses, providing renewed visitor traffic. As downtown street life becomes more exciting, Main Street could also begin to attract new residents. Young people responding to the energizing atmosphere may move into the apartments above the stores. In this instance, real estate investors will start building new apartments, providing new housing as well as work for local residents. All of this activity would help to restore the city’s commercial and residential tax base.If you want confirmation that this kind of plan works, just look at Springfield’s results. When they instituted their pedestrian-only zone in 2003, the changes were dramatic. Restaurants and hotels began to fill up, tax revenues rose, unemployment rates went down, and there were even fewer auto accidents and deaths. At the same time, the people of the town gained an exciting new neighborhood. I certainly hope you’ll give this idea your serious consideration.Yours truly,Mary Beth BlakelyWord bank1. revenue n. income from business activities or taxese.g. The magazine had been losing advertising revenue for months.Collocationtax revenues2. convert vi. change from one system, use, or method to another, or make something do this; change your beliefs, esp. your religious beliefs, or persuade someone to do thise.g. You have to convert the temperature readings from Fahrenheit to Celsius. The subsidies are to enable farmers to convert to organic production methods.Collocationconvert into convert sth. into sth. converted to3. residential adj. a residential area is one in which most of the buildings are housese.g. This is a quiet residential neighborhood.HOME LISTENINGMake Downtown AlbionExciting and VibrantI. Therefore, very few people were able to enjoy some of history’s most important and fascinating artifacts. This has changed with a recent increase in the number of traveling museum exhibitions. Today, more and more Ministries of Culture and federal government offices are allowing important historical and artistic works to be taken on around-the-world journeys to allow people everywhere to witness them with their own eyes.King Tutankhamen ArtifactsA traveling exhibition of artifacts from the tomb of King Tutankhamen, popularly known as “King Tut,” toured the United States from November 1976 to April 1979. The 55 o bjects in this display were shown in six cities and were seen by around eight million museum-goers. A subsequent touring exhibit was launched in 2007, this time with 130 artifacts and stops in London and three different American cities. However some items, like the king’s golden face mask, are too valuable or too delicate to be transported long distances, so “replicas,” or pieces which simulate the real piece, are featured in the show.Japanese Color Woodblock PrintsThe University of Virginia Art Museum, in Charlottesville, Virginia, has an extraordinary collection of Japanese color woodblock prints. These prints document the period from about 1850 to 1900, a time when Japan was opening itself to Western influences. Before this point,Japan was a closed society that had little contact with the world outside of its borders. These works of art beautifully show the feeling of change and the trend toward modernization. The museum has put together a traveling exhibition of 60 of these prints, which can be borrowed and exhibited worldwide for periods of eight weeks or more.Face-to-face with “Lucy”One of the world’s most famous archaeological finds in history are the 3.2 million-year-old bones of a 106-centimeter-tall female found in the Ethiopian desert in 1974. Lucy, a name given to her by the discovery team, is a “hominid,” or a creature that scientists believe is a primitive ancestor of modern human beings. Anthropologists believe that human life began in this region, and Lucy is important to our understanding the evolution of humans. Rarely is an artifact this valuable allowed to travel widely, but Lucy has been taken to several museums in the U.S. while a detailed replica remains at the Ethiopian Natural History Museum.Word bank1. replica n. exact copye.g. The artist made a replica of his picture.2. hominid n. a member of a group of animals which includes human beings and also the animals from whom humans developede.g. Excavations here from 1936 to 1941 led to the discovery of the first hominid fossil at this site.3. ancestor n. forefathere.g. People descended from a common ancestor.HOME LISTENINGI. Scientists agree that about 50 percent of all the plants and animals that existed on earth became extinct about 65 million years ago. They also agree that at a similar time, a huge piece of rock from outer space, called a “meteorite,” landed in Mexico. Using this as a starting point, Doctor of Physics Luis Alvarez proposed the following theory: the impact of the meteorite was so strong that it caused enormous clouds of dirt and dust to cover the sky, blocking out the sun and causing the temperature on Earth to fall greatly. The result was called “impact winter.” Followers of this theory believe that during this cool period, many types of plants died out, which in turn resulted in the extinction of many animals on Earth, including dinosaurs.Other scientists have somewhat different interpretations of why the dinosaurs disappeared. Dewey McLean, a geologist at Virginia Polytechnic University, agrees that the impact caused severe changes in the earth’s climate. However, he believes that the earth was already experiencing an overall rise in the temperature of its atmosphere called “global warming.” He felt that this was due to extremely active volcanoes on the Indian subcontinent, which were spilling out vast qu antities of melted rock, or lava, onto the earth’s surface. Scientists believe that the lava covered over a million square miles of India and the surrounding countries. McLean believes that this volcanic activity resulted in changes to the balance of chemicals in the air and the ocean water. He theorizes that these changes contributed to the global extinction of plant and animal species because they could not survive the chemical changes in their environment.Peter Ward, professor of geological sciences at the University of Washington in Seattle, adds his own view to those of earlier researchers. He agrees with Dr. McLean that dinosaurs did not become extinct because of a single meteorite impact. He also agrees that global warming, principally caused by volcanic activity, was the reason for their dying out. However, he suggests that volcanoes in northern Russia contributed to the changes in the climate. He points toscientific evidence showing that the process of extinction was a slow one, lasting millions of years, which indicates that it was not a sudden occurrence. Other scientists hold very different theories and it will probably be many years before the debate is resolved completely.HOME LISTENINGI. Listen to the passage. He became particularly interested in wild animals, such as snakes and reptiles. While most people are not very attracted to this type of wildlife, Martin always had an intense fascination. According to one report, when he was three years old, he apparently jumped into the python pit of a snake park in India. His mother also says that Gerry was constantly bringing home all sorts of animals when he was young. However, Gerry’s interests do not extend to all of the Martins. In the same article, the herpetologist notes that no one else in his family shares his great love of snakes. The Interest GrowsMartin’s interest in reptiles continued to grow and by the age of 17 he had already started assisting Romulus Whitaker at the Madras Crocodile Bank. The goal of this agency is to ensure the survival of this endangered animal in India. In 1996, Martin became the youngest curator, or manager, to be entrusted with this important position. Since then, Martin has continued to do important research in the field of herpetology and has served as an expert advisor on a wide variety of National Geographic documentaries. He has also appeared on screen in the National Geographic Channel movies “Wild Things” and “World Gone Wild.” Meanwhile, he continues to develop the academic side of his career. He is busy creating a comprehensive listing of reptiles in India, which he hopes future generations of herpetologists will find useful in their conservation efforts.Helping People Help ReptilesBecause of his devotion to conserving and restoring the world’s reptile population, Martin understands how crucial it is to educate young people. He does this primarily through camps and other educational programs. Martin provides children with an extraordinary experience by taking groups into India’s countryside where they camp out for several days, observing the local reptile population up close. They learn how to identify various snakes and even get an opportunity to learn safe handling techniques. In addition, as part of an Education Outreach Program organized by National Geographic, Martin has also traveled to several countries in Southeast Asia presenting programs to young people about the importance of reptile conservation. This work, in combination with his academic research, has made Gerry Martin one of the world’s most extraordinary herpetologists.Word bankcurator n. official in charge (esp. of a museum or art gallery)e.g. Fred was the newly appointed curator of the museum.Useful expressionsentrust sb. with sth. trust sb. to complete sth.e.g. We decided to entrust you with the sole agency for cars.。
