The research group used information from 2003. The researchers found that 72 percent of girls successfully completed their high school education. That compared to 65 percent of boys. The newspaper Education Week noted earlier this year that, in some ways, what people are worried about now is really not new. Boys have scored lower than girls on tests in the National Assessment of Educational Progress since at least 1971.And the differences are not limited to the United States. Education Week noted the results ofan international reading test in 2003. Fifteen-year-olds took the test in 41 countries. Girls scored higher than boys in almost every country. Differences between males and females are a continuing issue of fierce debate. Cultural and economic influences play an important part. But recent findings suggest that another part of the answer lies in differences between the male and female brains.These include differences in learning rates. As a result, some researchers say, boys may not be able to develop language and reading skills as well as girls do. The last time there was a lot of concern about differences in school, it was about girls, especially in math and science classes. Efforts to improve the situation for girls included hiring more female teachers. Yet some people think the opposite situation exists now. They say not enough male teachers is one reason why boys may not learn as well in class. Another explanation being heard involves the increased testing in American schools. Some people say schools are preparing for these important tests by forcing boys to sit quietly at their desks. They say this is unfair. Still others say that society is failing boys, by giving them the message that studying is not manly. And others say boys are failing in school because they become too interested in the girls in their classes. One attempt to solve problems like these is the use of same-sex classrooms.第1题For the past two decades, girls have always achieved high scores than boys.A.trueB.false参考答案: A 您的答案:未作答答案解析:推理判断题。

At that time, inland waterways provided North America's most popular form of long-distance transportation. Travel by rivers was often more convenient than taking a wagon over primitive country roads, especially when shipping heavy loads of farm products or household goods. Where the natural waterways were inadequate, shallow canals were built. The Erie Canal, opened in 1825, connected the Great Lakes with the upper Hudson River. It allowed settlers in the Great Lakes region to send their crops eastward to New York City at the mouth of Hudson at a much lower cost. From there, crops could be shipped to other Atlantic ports. The construction of the Erie Canal also encouraged westward migration along inland waterways and helped populate the frontier. The City of Detroit grew up between two of the Great Lakes. Later acanal joined the Great Lakes with the Mississippi river system and Chicago became a thriving city. Politically the waterway system united the nation in a way few had imagined possible, by the mid-1800s, faster and cheaper railroads became more popular and the canal system declined. John and Susannah Wheatley bought her for three pounds at a slave auction in Boston in 1761 to be a personal servant of Mrs. Wheatley. The family had three other slaves, and all were treated with respect. Phyllis was soon accepted as one of the family, which included being raised and educated with the Wheatley's twin15- year-old children, Mary and Nathaniel. At that time, most females, even from better families, could not read and write, but Mary was probably one of the best educated young women in Boston. Mary wanted to become a teacher, and in fact, it was Mary who decided to take charge of Phyllis's education. Phyllis soon displayedher remarkable talents. At the age of twelve she was reading the Greek and Latin classics and passages from the Bible. And eventually, Mrs. Wheatley decided Phyllis should become a Christian.At the age of thirteen Phyllis wrote her first poem. She became a Boston sensation after she wrote a poem on the death of the evangelical preacher George Whitfield in 1770. It became common practice in Boston to have “Mrs. Wheatley's Phyllis” read poetry in polite society. Mary married in 1771, and Phyllis later moved to the country because of poor health, as a teacherand caretaker to a farmer's three children. Mary had tried to interest publishers in Phyllis's poems but once they heard she was a Negro they weren't interested.Then in 1773 Phyllis went with Nathaniel, who was now a businessman, to London.It was thought that a sea voyage might improve her health. Thirty-nine of her poems were published in London as Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral. It was the first book published by a black American. In 1775 Phyllis wrote a poem extolling the accomplishments of George Washington and sent it to him. He responded by praising her talents and inviting her to visit his headquarters. After both of her benefactors died in 1777, and Mary died in1778, Phyllis was freed as a slave. She married in 1778, moved away from Boston, and had three children. For example, the vital ingredient in a rose fragrance is extracted from natural rose oil at a cost of thousands of dollars a pound; an identical synthetic substance can be made for 1% of this cost. Since the early twentieth century, success in reproducingthese substances has created a new industry that today produces hundreds of artificial flavors and fragrances.Some natural fragrances are easily synthesized; these include vanillin, the aromatic ingredient in vanilla, and benzaldehyde, the aromatic ingredient in wild cherries. Other fragrances, however, have dozens, even hundreds of components. Only recently has it been possible to separate and identify these ingredients by the use of gas chromatography and spectroscopy. Once the chemical identity is known, it is often possible to synthesize them. Nevertheless, some complex substances such as the aroma of fresh coffee, have still not been duplicated satisfactorily.Many of the chemical compounds making up these synthetics are identical to those found in nature, and are as harmless or harmful as the natural substances. New products must be tested for safety, and when used in food, must be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.The availability of synthetic flavors and fragrances has made possible a large variety of products, from inexpensive beverages to perfumed soap to used cars with applied “new car odor”.71. Natural rose oil costs the same as its fragrances.73. The industry of producing hundreds of artificial flavors and fragrances probably appeared in___.A. 2000B. 1953C.1909D.181074. One night, after he had turned twenty-one, Henry put his father and five other people in his father’s Model A Ford and drove to the house of the voting registrar. He said they were there to put their names in the voting book. The registrar was prepared for this. He said the literacy regulation required that Henry be able to read the Constitution of the United States. He placed a copy on the table. Henry picked it up and read it. The registrar looked at Henry and realized he had no choice. He entered Henry’s name in the book. He was the first black to register in the county. The second was his father, because Henry would not leave until his father’s name, and the names of the five others, were put in the book. That was not enough. The next day Henry brought more people to the courthouse, where he faced a different clerk who refused to register the people. Henry told him, “I believe you ought to register these folks. They’re able to read. Not all of your folks coming in here can read.”For the first time the county government encountered a man who would not budge from his belief in his rights. Henry got the people registered.1.The black people did not vote in America in 1941.A.TRUEB.FALSE正确答案:B解析:理解推断。

全国翻译专业资格(水平)考试英语三级笔译实务模拟试题Part 1 English-Chinese Translation (英译汉)Translate the following passage into Chinese and write your translation on the ANSWER SHEET (60 points, 100 minutes).I leave the vault, and as the guard closes the door, a marine archaeologist asks if I want to see anything else. As an example he shows me an astrolabe, a navigation tool that preceded the sextant. Few have survived. "We have three of the oldest known," he says. He directs me to a paper on astrolabes written by a Cuban colleague, who quoted a 16th-century instruction: "He who wants to take the sun with an astrolabe at sea, must be seated near the main mast, the place where the boat oscillates the least and is quiet."I want to take the measure of Cuba's past, so I tell the archaeologist I would like to go to the place where the plain things are. I am here not only to see treasures that glitter but also to see and touch objects that illumine moments of the past. Smiling, he takes me into storage rooms where he and other archaeologists preserve cargoes from four centuries of wrecks. Jumbled on these shelves is the stuff of Cuba's long reign as counting house and command center for Spain's New World colonies.I see knickknacks destined for one of the annual 18th-century trade fairs, where Cubans bought imports from Spain. I also see, pallid from centuries in the sea, dozens of little painted ceramic dogs, lions, cats, and deer later shipped from England. Stacked nearby are sets of dinner dishes, tankards, an hourglass, a bottle of very Old Spanish wine.On another day, in fading light, I walk the ramparts of ElMorro, its lighthouse standing tall over Havana's harbor. The old fortress, by day a warren of tourist stops, changes by night, looming deeper into the shadows of Havana's past. As torches light the darkness, I watch Cuban soldiers, costumed as 18th-century Spanish sentries, march along the ramparts of the Castillo de San Carlos and fire a cannon that salutes the end of day. In Spanish times the cannon signaled the closing of the city gates and the drawing of a great chain across the harbor. Now the nightly ritual keeps open the sea-lane of memory between colonial past and present nationhood.Near the waterfront of Old Havana stands the Palace of the Captains General. Once the headquarters of the Spanish bureaucracy that governed Cuba, the palace now is the Museum of the city. Light and shadow play along its walls of coral limestone. Royal palms rustle in its lust courtyard. Up a stone stairway a gallery leads to the spacious office of Eusebio Leal Spengler, historian of the city of Havana and preserver of its past.A slight, precise man in a well-tailored dark suit, he is the obvious ruler of the palace.We had hardly shaken hands before he began rapidly talking about Havana, a city he sees simultaneously in past and present. The jewels I had viewed in the vault were about to become part of the treasure he guards for Cuba. He has selected an old fort to be their new home. "This," he said with a sweep of his hand, "is the city that changed history. Because of a decision by PhilipⅡ all ships had to gather here to carry treasure back to Spain. And what treasure! Silk and aromatic wood from China, emeralds, silver."Part 2 Chinese-English Translation (汉译英)Translate the following passage into English and write your translation on the ANSWER SHEET (40 points, 80 minutes).中国海洋事业的发展海洋覆盖了地球表面的71%,是全球生命支持系统的一个基本组成部分,也是资源的宝库,环境的重要调节器。

//A:我听说足球和英式橄榄球是两种非常相似的团队运动。
B: Right. And they are similar because, in both of them, a ball is used and the players move the ball with their bodies, especially their feet. However, each game is different from the other in a number of ways. They differ in their origins, in their rules and strategies, in where they are played, and in many other ways. // A:那么它们最主要的区别是什么呢?//B: Well, soccer is played in many countries around the world. It is played by two teams with eleven men on each team. Each team has two ways to win. It must score more goals than the other team, and it must prevent the other team from scoring goals. // Each goal in soccer is worth one point. Soccer is played with a round ball. The ball may be kicked, or it may be moved by any part of the body except the hands. Only one player is allowed to use his hands. This is the player who defends the goal. // A:那么英式橄榄球呢?它是不是与足球一样流行?//B: I´m afraid not. Rugby is played professionally in only a few countries. The most important professional teams are in Great Britain, France, Australia, and New Zealand. The major difference between rugby and soccer is that rugby players may use their hands to move the ball. // The shape of the ball is ovals rather than round as it is in soccer. Rugby is also different from soccer in that it is played by a larger number of players. An amateur rugby team has fifteen players, while a professional team has thirteen. //下一题(1/1)Part ⅡInterpret the following passage from English to Chinese. What we have here is not only a splendid showcase of the students´ work, but side by side with the work from the staff here at the school. So the exhibition certainly earns its title "Art for All Ages". // I believe this exhibition provides an opportunity for the people of this community to showcase their achievements to one another, and also to encourage more people to take up the practice of participating in the process of creating art. It is a wonderful example that art has the ability to enrich the lives of everyone, no matter how old or young they may be. // Art is an important form of expressing our own individuality, from the separate and distinct perspective of our own personality. The art created by an adult is not necessarily better than the art created bya pupil, but it is certainly different — because at each age we create according to our experience and our view of the world as we see it. // Putting together art created by people of different ages, as displayed here today, is a very useful exercise because it highlights for us the different perspectives people have. // I would like to congratulate Principal Hennigan, for the imaginative and instructive idea of mounting this meeting of the ages here today. It is something we can all learn from, and I hope we will do just that. I now have great pleasure in declaring officially open the " Art for All Ages Exhibition".
