Yaleisrenownedforitslonghistory,uniquewayofteachingandexcellenceinaca demicpursuit.Iftimecouldgobackseveraldecades,Iwouldreallyliketobeastu dentofYalejustlikeyou.

Yale’smotto“LightandTruth,”whichisacallingforhumanprogre,represent stheairationofeverymotivatedyoungmanandwoman.Overthepastthreecenturie s,Yalehasproducedagalaxyofoutstandingfigures,including20Nobellaureate sandfiveAmericanpresidents.ThewordsofNathanHale,anAmericanheroandYale alumnus,“IonlyregretthatIhavebutonelifetoloseformycountry,”havealso iiredmeandmanyotherChinese.IsincerelyhopethatYalewillproducemoretalen tandcontributefurthertothesocialandeconomicdevelopmentoftheUnitedStat esandthecauseofhumanprogre.

TheChineseandAmericahavealwayshadaninteeinterestinandcareddeeplyabout eachother.TheChineseadmirethepioneeringandenterprisingiritoftheAmeric aandtheirproudachievementinnationaldevelopment.AsChinadevelorapidlyan dsteadyheadwayismadeinChina-U.S.cooperation,moreandmoreAmericaarefoll owingwithgreatinterestChina’sprogreanddevelopment.

Understandingleadstotrust.Today,IwouldliketoeaktoyouaboutChina’sdeve lopmentstrategyanditsfutureagaitthebackdropoftheevolutionoftheChinese civilizationandChina’scurrentdevelopmentendeavor.Ihopethiswillhelpyo ugainabetterunderstandingofChina.

foughtcourageouslyandunyieldinglytoridthemselvesofpovertyandbackwardn eandtorealizenationalrejuvenation,thusprofoundlychangingthedestinyoft heChinesenation.Ninety-fiveyearsago,theChinesepeoplelaunchedtheRevolu tionof1911thatoverthrewthefeudalautocracywhichhadruledChinaforseveral thousandyearsandopene dthedoortoChina’sprogre.

Fifty-sevenyearsago,theChinesepeoplesucceededinwiingliberationafterpr otractedandhardstruggleandfoundedNewChinainwhichpeoplebecametheirownm asters.Twenty-eightyearsago,theChinesepeopleembarkeduponthehistoricdr iveofreform,opening-upandmodernizationandhavemadephenomenalprogrethro ughunremittingefforts.

Between1978and20xx,China’sGDPgrewfrom$147.3billionto$2.2257trillion. Itsimportandexportvolumewentupfrom$20.6billionto$1.4221trillionandits foreignexchangereservesoaredfrom$167millionto$818.9billion.Duringthis period,thenumberofitspoorruralpopulationdroedfrom250millionto23millio n.Theabovereviewoftheprofoundchangesinthese160yearsshowsonething,name ly,bycarryingoutpersistentandhardstruggle,theChinesepeoplehavebothcha ngedtheirowndestinyandadvancedthecauseofhumanprogre.

Ontheotherhand,Ineedtopointoutthat,deitethesucceinitsdevelopment,Chin aremaitheworld’slargestdevelopingcountry,withpercapitaGDPrankingbehi ndthe100thplace.TheChinesepeopleareyettoliveawell-offlifeandChinastil lfacesdauntingchallengesinitsdevelopmentendeavor.Thereforeitrequiress ustainedandunremittingeffortstotraformthecountryandmakelifebetterfori tspeople.Inthenext15years,wewillstrivetomakenewprogreinbuildingamoder atelyproeroussocietyinanall-roundwaythatwillbenefitChina’sonebi llion andmorepopulation.

WeaimtoraiseChina’sGDPto$4trillionby2020,averaging$3,000perperson.By then,China’seconomywillbebetterdevelopedanditsdemocracywillbefurther enhanced.Moreprogrewillbemadeinscienceandeducation.Itsculturewillbefu rtherenriched,thesocietywillbecomemoreharmoniousandthepeoplewillleada betterlife.

Torealizethesegoals,Chinahasadoptedanewconceptofdevelopmentinlinewith itsnationalconditioandtherequirementofthetimes.Thatis,topursueascient ificoutlookondevelopmentthatmakeseconomicandsocialdevelopmentpeople-o riented,compreheive,balancedandsustainable.Wewillworktostrikeaproperb alancebetweenurbanandruraldevelopment,developmentamongregio,economica ndsocialdevelopment,developmentofmanandnature,anddomesticdevelopmenta ndopeningwidertotheoutsideworld.Greateremphasiswillbeputonaddreingiue saffectingpeople’slivelihood,overcomingimbalancesindevelopmentandres olvingkeyproblemsthathaveoccurredinthecourseofdevelopment.Wewillpursu
