2017-2018学年人教版高一英语暑假作业:(8)

2017-2018学年人教版高一英语暑假作业(8)一、阅读理解1There was a gardener who looked after his garden with great care. To water his flowers, he used two buckets. One was a shiny and new bucket(桶). The other was a very old and dilapidated one, which had seen many years of service, but was now past its best.Every morning, the gardener would fill up the two buckets. Then he would carry them along the path, one on each side, to the flowerbeds. The new bucket was very proud of itself. It could carry a full bucket of water without a single drop spilled (溢出). The old bucket felt very ashamed because of its holes: before it reached the flowerbeds, much water had leaked (漏) along the path.Sometimes the new bucket would say, “See how capable I am! How good it is that the gardener has me to water the flowers every day! I don't know why he still bothers with you. What a waste of space you are!”And all that the old bucket could say was, “I know I’m not very useful, but I can only do my best. I’m happy that the gardener still finds a little bit of use in me, at least.”One day, the gardener heard that kind of conversation. After watering the flowers as usual, he said, “You both have done your work very well. Now I am going to carry you back. I want you to look carefully along the path.”Then the two buckets did so. That was four years ago. Today all three generations regard the move to a success, giving them a closer relationship than they would have had in separate cities. No statistics show the number of grandparents like Garza who are moving closer to the children and grandchildren. Yet there is evidence suggesting that the trend is growing. Even President Obama’s mother-in-law, Marian Robinson, has agreed to leave Chicago and into the White House to help care for her granddaughters. According to a study grandparents com. 83 percent of the people said Mrs. Robinson ‘s decision will influenc e the grandparents in the American family. Almost every grandparent wants to be with his or her grandchildren and is willing to make sacrifices, but sometimes it is wiser to say no and visit frequently instead. It’s time to stop complaining. The economy might be melting down like butter in a hot pot, but for some people — you , maybe? — this could be a very good thing. Here’s why. At no other time in recent history has it been easier or cheaper to start a new kind of company. Possibly a very profitable company. Let’s call these start-ups LILOs, for “a little in, a lot out;” These are Web-based businesses that cost almost nothing to get off the ground yet can turn into great moneymakers. How do you get started? All that’s required is a great idea for a product that will fill a need in the 21st century. These days you’d do b est if your idea either makes people money or saves them money. And launching now will make your company stronger later —you’ll learn to survive on fumes until the economy improves. That’s what John Tayman is doing. He’s an author who lives in San Fra ncisco, where I met him; he wrote reviews for a business magazine I edited. Tayman knew little about technology and even less about business. And yet he dreamed of a website that would summarize car reviews from other sources and rank every model of new ca r. “It’ll be like meets Kelley Blue Book,” he explained to me during lunch one day last June. Tayman said he intended to build the site on the side while continuing to write for a living. He’d work on his new company only at night and on weekends. Oh, yes, and he had only about $10,000. “Good luck with that!” I thought. Ideas are much easier to produce than they are to put into practice.Tayman went to work with nothing more than his PowerBook laptop. A very well-organized fellow, he quickly discovered a bunch of free stuff online — instructional manuals and sites that walk you through the process from start to finish. Within months, Tayman had a staff of 20 employees working for him in five different countries. went live in January. Tayman figures he has worked about 10 hours a week on it and hasn’t spent a cent on marketing or advertising. Growth is modest but steady: nearly 10,000 people visit each week.1.What is an advantage of starting a business now?A.It will guarantee you a big success.B.It can never be more profitable.C.It costs you much less than ever before.D.It keeps you from useless complaining.2.What is necessary to start your business according to the passage?A.Low-cost products used to be trade.B.Practical products with good quality.C.Starting the business as early as possible.D.A good idea helping people make or save money.3.How did the author feel on hearing of Tayman’s idea?A.He was sure that it would make profit.B.He had no confidence in Tay man’s success.C.He didn’t trust his ability.D.He thought Tayman was out of his mind.4.How is Tayman’s website going now?A.It has a total of 10,000 visits per week.B.It has made a huge profit since January.C.It still copies free stuff from the Internet.D.It starts to be used by more people now.4.Is Your Diet Destroying the Environment?A vegetarian diet is often praised for its health benefits. Studies have shown that vegetarians usually have lower levels of heart disease and a lower risk of diabetes than people who eat meat. What most people are less aware of, however, are the effects that a vegetarian diet can have on the environment.Researchers from the Union of Concerned Scientists in the US recently studied how consumer behavior affects the environment. The study showed that meat consumption is one of the main ways that humans can damage the environment, second only to the use of motor vehicle. Then, how can eating meat have a negative effect on the environment? For a start, all farm animals such as cows, pigs, and sheep give off methane (沼气) gas by expelling (排出) wind from their bodies. One cow can produce up to 60 liters of methane each day. Methane gas is the second most common greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide. Many environmental experts now believe that it is more responsible for global warming than carbon dioxide. It is estimated that 25% of all methane released into the atmosphere comes from farm animals.Another way that meat production affects the environment is through the use of water and land. 2,500 gallons of water are needed to produce one pound of beef, whereas 20 gallons of water are needed to produce one pound of wheat. One acre of farmland used for crop production can produce 40,000 pounds of potatoes, 30,000 pounds of carrots, or 50,000 pounds of tomatoes. Many people now see the benefits of switching to a vegetarian diet, not just for health reasons, but also because it plays a vital role in protecting the environment. However, some nutritionists advise against switching to a totally strict vegetarian, or vegan diet. They believe a vegan diet, which excludes all products from animal sources, such as cheese, eggs, and milk, can be short of many necessary vitamins and minerals our bodies need.Today, many people know it’s important to take better care of their bodies and to use the earth’s resources more efficiently. As this understanding spreads, more people may realize that to help the environment and for the human race to survive, more of us will need to become vegetarians.1.The underlined word “it” in Para.3 refers to ___________.A.methane gasB.carbon dioxideC.expelling windD.greenhouse gas2.Many figures are used in Para.4 to show ___________.A.growing tomatoes has the highest productionB.crop production is better than meat productionC.meat production consumes too much water and landD.farm animals are the main producer of the methane gas3.What message does the passage want to convey?A.Our diet is destroying the surroundings.B.Raising farm animals affects the environment.C.A vegetarian diet helps to protect the environment.D.More and more people are becoming strict vegetarians.二、七选五5根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Maybe they are worried about their handwriting. Are you one of them? 36 Here are five steps that really work!Get a great graspTry this —hold your pencil at the top and try to write your name. Pretty hard? But when you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. 37 Hold it in place with your thumb, and your index (食指) and middle fingers.Let the lines be your guideLined paper is your friend! Those lines can help you create letters that are the right size and proportion (均衡). 38 Also be sure to fill up the lined space completely. 于对市爱美阳光实验学校高一英语下学期暑假作业试题〔8〕一阅读理解AChildren's lives have changed greatly over the last 50 years. But do they have a happier childhood than you or I did? It's difficult to look back on one's own childhood without some element of nostalgia(怀旧的). I have four brothers and sisters, and my memories are all about being with them.Playing board games on the living room floor, or spending days in the street with the other neighborhood children, racing up and down on our bikes, or exploring the nearby woods. My parents scarcely appear in these memories, except as providers either of meals or of severe blame after some particularly risky adventure. These days, in the UK at least, the nature of childhood has changed dramatically.Firstly, families are smaller, and there are far more only children. It is common for both parents to work outside the home and there is the feeling that there just isn't time to bring up a large family, or that no one could possibly afford to have more than one child. As a result, today's boys and girls spend much of their time alone.Another major change is that youngsters today tend to spend a huge amount of their free time at home, inside.More than anything this is due to the fact that parents worry far more than they used to about real or imagined dangers, so they wouldn't dream of letting their children play outside by themselves. Finally, the kind of toys children have and the way they play is totally different.Computer and video games have replaced the board games and more interesting activities of my childhood. The irony〔令人啼笑皆非的事情〕 is that so many ways of playing games are called "interactive〞. The fact that you can play electronic games on your own further increases the sense of loneliness felt by many young people today.Do these changes mean that children today have a less relaxing childhood than I had? I personally believe that they do, but perhaps every generation feels exactly the same.56. What is the purpose of the direct question given in the firstparagraph?A. To show who the passage is written for.B. To gatherpeople's opinions on childhood.C. To compare the childhood lives of two generations.D. To get people's attention and lead in the topic.57.Which is NOT a reason for the changes?A. Families are smaller today.B. Toys can be played bychildren alone at home.C. It's too dangerous to play outside.D. Parents worried toomuch about their children.58. What has the writer focused on in the fourth paragraph?A. Some games that young people play today aren't really good.B. Computer and video games have replaced the board games.C. Young people today shouldn't play electronic games.D. Board games are much more interesting than computer games.BOne day a student was walking with his teacher in the countryside. As they went along, they saw a pair of old shoes lying in the path. They were a pool farmer’s,who was working in the nearby field. The student turned to the teacher saying,“We will hide his shoes, and hide ourselves behind those trees, and wait to see what he will do〞“My young friend.〞answered the teacher,“we should never make fun of the poor. Why not put a coin in each shoe, and then we will hide ourselves and watch?〞The student did so and they both hid themselves behind the trees. The poor man soon finished his work, and came across the field to the path where he had left his coat and shoes. After putting on his coat,he put his foot into one of his shoes, and felt something hard. Then he bent (弯腰) down to feel what it was,and found the coin. Surprised,he looked at the coin, turned it around and looked at it again. He then looked around, but no person was seen.He put the money into his pocket, and continued to put on the other shoe. His surprise was doubled on finding the other coin.He couldn’t control his feelings and fell to his knees, looked up to the sky and expressed his thanks. Then he spoke of his wife, sick and helpless, and his children without bread. He said the help would save them from dying. The student stood there deeply moved, and his eyes filled with tears.“Now,〞said the teacher, “Are you not much happie r than if you had hidden the shoes?〞24. When the student saw the shoes,he wanted to_______A. steal themB. play a joke on the ownerC. find their ownerD. give the owner some money25.According to the passage, the teacher is______.A. quiet and honestB. kind and friendlyC. patient and cleverD.strict and careful26. When the farmer saw the second coin, he______A. was surprised and decided to find the ownerB. was worried and looked up at the skyC. was very excited and gratefulD. spoke of his difficulties and asked for more help27 .What can we learn from the passage?A. Those capital letters should be from the bottom line to the top one. Slow downIf your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. If you rush, it’s hard to control where you stop and start your letters.Lower the pressure39 That makes it harder to make the smooth lines. Try easing up and don’t hold the pencil too tightly.40Lots of games require you to write or draw pictures. So even though it’s not schoolwork, you’re still using the skills you need to control your pen better.A. Play gamesB. Ask for more adviceC. So “a” should be half the height of a capital “A”.D. You’ve been writing since you were a little kid.E. Some kids press down really hard when they write.F. The good news is that just about everyone can improve their handwriting.G. The study, which extracted a DNA sample from their volunteers, found people who exercised more each week had longer telomeres.Exercise lowers the risk of a range of problems such as heart disease, diabetes(糖尿病) and cancer, the researchers said.“It is not just walking around the block. It is really working up a sweat,〞said Tim Spector, a genetic epidemiologist(流行病学家) who led the study, in a telephone interview. The study found people who exercised vigorously 3 hours each week had longer telomeres and they were 9 years biologically younger than people who did under 15 minutes.Spector’s team, who also adjusted for body weight, smoking, economic status and physical activity at work, also said moderate exercise for 1-1/2 hours each week provided a four-year advantage. The reason why exercise has this effect is not clear but we believe physical activity somehow defends against the natural process.1. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?A. Lifestyle affects peopl e’s healthB. Physical activity prevents diseasesC. Exercise keeps you youngerD. Sitting long suffers from cancer2. According to the study, people sitting long .A. are tending to be more healthyB. are more likely to live longerC. are inclined to be taken illD. are getting old more slowly3. The underlined phrase “boil down to〞 most probably means .A. lie inB. lead toC. aim atD. show up4. Which of the following statements are NOT true?A. Telomeres get shorter as time goes on.B. Slight walking prevents people getting ill.C. Exercise energetically reduces the chance of diseases.D. Body weight, smoking and economic statusaffect people’s health.5. It can be inferred from the passage that .A. peopl e’s health is decided by their body weight and economic statusB. scientists have known why exercise affects the ageing processC. the more violently one exercises, the healthier one getsD. the longer telomeres one has, the more slowly one gets oldBNow scientists believe that global warming affects hibernating animals, causing them to wake up earlier. While this may seem a little concern, it is in fact a significant environmental problem. The shortened hibernation period could actually lead to significant declines in the populations of several species Some of the first concrete evidence of the phenomenon came from Colorado, where researchers at the Rocky Mountain Biological lab have been observing marmot 〔旱獭〕hibernation behavior since the 1970s. In the early days of their studies, marmots generally hibernated several weeks into the month of May. Nowadays, however, temperatures in the area have risen by 2.5 degrees Fahrenheit, and the marmots are waking up about a month earlier. At least the marmots are still hibernating. Several other animals have not been hibernating at all recently. Brown bears in the Spanish Cantabrian Mountains did not hibernate last year. In parts of the United States, chipmunks〔花鼠〕alsoskipped the hibernation period. The bears seem to have survived without losing many individuals. The chipmunks, however, were not so lucky. Many of the animals died of starvation during the winter. The problem with animals waking up early, or skipping hibernation altogether, lies with the creatures’ metabolism〔新陈代谢〕. When an animal hibernates, their metabolism drops significantly. The animals’ heart rate slows, and they require very little energy to live. When the animals awake from their winter slumber, their metabolism returns to normal. But while their metabolism may be as active as it was before hibernation, food sources aren’t as available as they were before. A marmot may wake up when temperatures get warmer, thinking it’s spring, but plants will not have gotte n the amount of sun they need to signal their spring period of growth. So until the plants grow, the marmots have no reliable food source. Many scientists believe the problem will continue to get worse. In addition to changes in hibernation patterns, some believe that other animals will also begin to change their migration patterns or begin to give birth earlier. For many biologists, that’s a scary prospect. Terry Root, an animal expert at Stanford University, said: “I do think what we will be facing is th e extinction of many species."6. What is the viewpoint of the writer?A. Global warming will continue to get worse as time goes on.B. Global warming will lead to shortened hibernation of some animals.C. Shortened hibernation will result in declines in the population of animals.D. Some animals will skip hibernation altogether.7. The writer sets the example of the marmot so as to __________.A. explain that global warming influences animals’ hibernationB. indicate that the weather gets warmer and warmer nowC. show that the weather in the United States is quite differentD. say some animals do not hibernate now due to warm weather8. The underlined word “slumber〞 in the fourth paragraph means “_________〞.A. weatherB. activityC. nestD. sleep9. Why can’t marmots find enough food when they wake up?A. Because there are too many marmots in the wild now.B. Because plants haven’t received enough sunlight for spring growth.C. Because winter days end much earlier than before.D. Because more and more animal species skip hibernation now.10. Terry Root holds a(n) __________ attitude towards the future of animals.A. optimisticB. doubtfulC. pessimisticD. sensitiveCRock and roll music developed in the United States in the early nineteen-fifties. It was based on the music called rhythm and blues that was performed by African American musicians.Early rock and roll singers developed their own kinds of music. Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, the Beach Boys, and Bob Dylan were the most popular rock and rollmusicians in the early 1960’s. All were American. Then, in 1964, a new rock and roll group from England invaded America: the Beatles. Some people say the Beatles’ music shook America like an earthquake. The Beatles changed rock and roll forever. Their early songs were influenced by American rock and roll musicians, including Chuck Berry. But the Beatles looked different and sounded different from any musical group before them. The Beatles released their first album in the United States in 1964, when all of the top five records in America were by the Beatles. In 1967, they released an album called “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.〞 It was one of the first “concept〞 albums. That is, all the songs were linked by a common story or idea. The popularity of the Beatles led the way for more rock and roll bands from England to become popular in America. The Rolling Stones was the most important of these bands. The Rolling Stones is one of the few groups from the 1960’s that is still performing and recording today. In 1965, the group recorded one of its most famous songs, “Satisfaction〞.The musical instrument most linked to rock and roll is the guitar. Experts say Jimi Hendrix was one of the most influential guitar players in rock and roll during the late 1960’s. His “Purple Haze〞 was liked by many people.By the 1970’s, rock and roll music became known as rock music. It expanded into many new forms. For example, there was country rock, hard rock, acid rock, and heavy metal rock. Punk rock, jazz rock, and glitter rock.In the middle 1970’s, experts say rock music regained some of the energy of early rock and roll. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band became popular with their album “Born to Run〞. Springsteen’s music was like the lively rock and roll music of the early nineteen-sixties. Many of his songs were about social issues. He sang about the effects of unemployment and the war in Vietnam.11. The main topic of this passage is _______.A. the history of American musicB. the development of rock and roll musicC. the famous rock and roll groupsD. the new forms of rock and roll music12. Which of the following matches is NOT true?A. the Beatles — Chuck BerryB. the Rolling Stones — SatisfactionC. Jimi Hendrix — Purple HazeD. Bruce Springsteen — Born to Run13. From the passage, we can know that _______.A. one of the Rolling Stones’ albums was called “concept〞B. the Beatles and the Rolling Stones became popular at the same timeC. rock and roll music had many different forms at the beginningD. rock and roll music probably came from African American music四、阅读表达Shoppers who carefully plan their visit to the grocery store can save money on their grocery bills. Shopping when not hungry, sticking to a grocery list, and following a few simple rules will cut down the grocery bill.Shoppers should visit the grocery store on a full stomach by scheduling theirtrip immediately after a large meal. If that’s not possible, they should find something healthy to eat while preparing a grocery list. Most shoppers are lesstempted to buy extras when they are not bothered by hunger.Although having a list and sticking to it is the most important factor in savingmoney, shoppers must prepare lists wisely in order to save. A carefully planned listshould include in-season produce and any items on sale or discounted through coupons. Many special buys are announced through the local newspapers, so buying the “groceryissue〞 is worth the investment. However, it’s important to remember that manynewer, more expensive products first offered through coupons may not yield enoughsavings for shoppers to give up the product they usually buy.Now that the shopper has completed the grocery list, it’s time to the store. However, no preparations are complete without a pocket calculator or pieceof paper and pencil to figure costs.Once at the store, the shopper who wants to save money should follow a few morerules. The shopper should not stay longer than necessary, because bills go up eachminute the shopper is in the store. So, setting a time limit and a cost limit canhold down the bill. Of course, the shopper should stick strictly to the shoppinglist and resist impulses to buy additional items. If the grocery list is a shortone, some shoppers resist impulse buying by using the small hand-held basket insteadof the roomy grocery cart.1. What does the first paragraph tell us? 高一英语假期检测题八第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

AWith eight bloodshot eyes fixed on a flying object, the pains of a two-year project were about to bear fruit. It was Wang Hongyi's first test flight of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UA V)designed and assembled (组装) with his teammates from the Aero-Sport Club (航模队) at Shanghai Jiaotong University.Wang is a senior mechanical engineering and automation major. He has been a plane model fan since childhood. As a freshman, he spent two nights building a model aircraft and took it to the sports field just for fun. Wu Junqi, the coach of Shanghai Jiaotong University's Aero-Sport Club, spotted Wang and told him his model was outdated.“I was a little angry, so he took me to the lab,”says Wang. He was immediately drawn to the modern equipment and decided to join the club. As a technology fan, Wang spends most of his spare time in the lab. “He loves what he's doing, so he can stand the loneliness of doing research tha t others seldom have the persistence to carry out.” says coach Wu.When Wang and his teammates were building UA V, they lived together in the lab. “We tried to spend as much time together as possible because there were thousands of problems that needed to b e solved.” Wang says. They didn't even have time to celebrate when the first test flight of the UA V went well. “We needed to list the problems that occurred during the flight and analyze them to find solutions.” he says.“Our UA V isn't finished yet, but t here are many design projects and people with similar interests waiting for me.” Wang says. “The UA V is just the beginning, not the end of my aircraft journey.”1.Why did Wang succeed in doing the research?A.He majored in mechanical engineering and automation.B.He had a good coach and wonderful teammates.C.He loved what he did and would stick to it.D.He was highly thought of by Wu Junqi.2.What does the writer want to do by writing the passage?A.Encourage students to learn from Wang Hongyi.B.Tell readers about UA V development in China.C.Inform readers about Wang Hongyi and his UA V.D.Call on readers to do what interests them.3.What message does Wang Hongyi's story convey to us?A.Nothing is difficult if you put your heart into it.B.Two heads are better than one.C.Interest is the best teacher.D.Actions speak louder than words.BAs Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know how the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the computer. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remembered the folder location (位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory (交互记忆).”According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories;that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn't mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.4.The passage begins with two questions to .A.introduce the main topic B.show the author's attitudeC.describe how to use the Internet D.explain how to store information 5.What can we learn about the first experiment?A.The Sparrow's team typed the information into a computer.B.The two groups remembered the information equally well.C.The first group did not try to remember the information.D.The second group did not understand the information.6.In transactive memory, people .A.keep the information in mindB.change the quantity of informationC.organize information like a computerD.remember how to find the information7.What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow's research?A.We are using memory differently.B.We are becoming more intelligent.C.We have poorer memories than before.D.We need a better way to access information.CWindows 8, apart from Windows 95, is the biggest surprise and the only version of Microsoft's operating system that has been changed from the core (核心) when compared to its former one. However, a recent study has shown that under 20% of business owners would be willing to upgrade to the new version of Windows. The reason for this remains to be discussed and debated, and we will try to throw light on this research by providing you with some of the most common advantages and disadvantages of Windows 8.Generally speaking, there are a great number of plus sides related to upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8.Speed—This is the biggest advantage to mention. Boot time has been reported to be up to nine times shorter than that with Windows 7.New passwords—Instead of typing your passwords, Windows 8 will let you use gestures on your favorite photos to enter your password. This is not only practical but also extremely cool!Windows 8 experience—Apart from computers, Windows 8 will be used on all devices, including smart phones, tablet PC's and so on. Also, owing to the fact that it has been specifically designed with touch screen users in mind, Windows 8, besides using keyboard and mouse, will offer a whole new user experience. However, there are still some disadvantages. The first one that has to be mentioned is that there is no Start Menu from Windows. Yes, there is no Start button in the lower left corner, and this might be a real puzzle of many Windows users. Also, many users have had a problem to get used to the new interface (界面) introduced by Windows 8. The biggest problem that is worth noticing is that Windows 8 was originally designed for touch screen users, and this may have a bad effect on desktop users who have gotten used to doing everything with the help of their keyboard and mouse.8.What does “plus sides” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to?A.Math symbols. B.Strengths.C.New rules. D.Messages.9.According to the text the greatest advantage of Windows 8 is its . A.complex passwords B.high speedC.unique experience D.new interface10.From the text we can learn that Windows 8 .A.no longer requires a passwordB.was upgraded from windows 95C.will be popular with desktop usersD.can be used on more than computers11.Many Windows 8 users face the problem that .A.start Menu is hidden in the lower left cornerB.they have to use fingerprints instead of buttonC.keyboard and mouse can't be used any longerD.they don't get accustomed to the new interfaceDWe know more about the surface of the planet Mars than we know about what is at the bottom of Earth's oceans.Until recently, scientists had mapped only about 20 percent of the sea floor. But our knowledge of the deep seas is changing because of information from satellites. Scientists have produced a new map that provides a detailed picture of the oceans. The map is expected to help oceanographers, industry and governments. The new map is twice as detailed as the map made 20 years ago. David Sandwell is a geophysics professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California. He and other scientists worked on the mapping project. He says they turned to space to look deeper into the ocean. He spoke to VOA on SKYPE.“The way we're doing that is to use a satellite altimeter (高度计), a radar to map the topography (地貌) of the ocean surface. Now that seems sort of strange that you'd map the topography of the ocean surface when you really want to get at the sea floor. But, the ocean surface topography has these bumps and dips due to gravitational effects that mimic what's on the sea floor.”The scientists collected and studied information from two satellites. Some of the data came from the European Space Agency's Cryo-2 satellite. It was placed in Earth's orbit to watch sea ice. The other satellite is the American space agency's Jason-1. It is studying the surface of the oceans. Scientists combined the satellite data with images gathered by sonar equipment on ships. Sonar works by sending sound waves through the water. When the sound waves hit an object, its presence is confirmed.“That enables us to look at smaller-scale features and also features that are buried by sediments in the ocean basins.”The new map shows the sea floor as it has never been seen before. It shows thousands of underwater mountains and places where continents pulled apart. It shows where earthquakes were active many years ago. They all are buried deep underneath the ocean floor. In one place, three mountain ridges join at the same area. Huge tectonic (构造的) plates can be seen clearly there.12.The passage is likely to .A.be an advertisement B.appear on VOAC.make a comment on radar D.appear on SKYPE13.What will be mentioned in the following paragraph, according to the last paragraph? A.The detailed information about the place.B.The more important thing in the ocean.C.The things buried in the ocean.D.Scientists told SKYPE they will explore at the same area.14.Scientists collected and studied information by .A.the European Space Agency's Cryo-2 satelliteB.the American space agency's Jason-1C.sonar equipment on shipsD.the Cryo-2 and the Jason-115.What's the best title of the passage?A.Scientists Create New Maps of Ocean FloorB.Scientists Know More Oceans Than MarsC.Oceans Will Provide Us With MapsD.People Know Easily About Mars第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

In the 1960s, medical researchers Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe developed a checklistof stressful events. They appreciated the tricky point that any major change can bestressful. Bad events like "serious illness of a family member" were high on the list, but so were some helpful life-changing events like marriage. When you take the Holmes-Rahe test you must remember that the score does notshow how you deal with stress - it only shows how much you have to deal with. Andwe now know that the way you deal with these events dramatically (戏剧性的) affectsyour chances of staying healthy. By the early 1970s, hundreds of similar studies hadfollowed Holmes and Rahe. And millions of Americans who work and live under stressworried over the reports. Somehow the research got boiled down to a memorable message.Women's magazines ran titles like "Stress causes illness".If you want to stay physically and mentally healthy the articles said avoid stressfulevents. But such simplistic advice is impossible to follow. Even if stressful eventsare dangerous , many — like the death of a loved one — are impossible to avoid. Moreover, any warning to avoid all stressful events is a prescription (处方) for staying away from chances as well as trouble. Since any change can be stressful, a person who wanted to be completely free of stress would never marry, have a child, take a new job or move. The idea that all stress makes you sick also takes no notice of a lot of what we know about people. It supposes we' re all vulnerable and not active in the face of the difficult situation. But what about human ability and creativity? Many come through periods of stress with more physical and mental strength than they had before. We also know that a long time without change or challenge can lead to boredom and physical and mental pressure.1. The result of Holmes-Rahe’s medical research tells us _________________.A. the way you deal with major events may cause stressB. what should be done to avoid stressC. what kind of event would cause stressD. how to deal with sudden changes in life2. The studies on stress in the early 1970s led to ___________________.A. popular avoidance of stressful jobsB. great fear over the mental disorderC. a careful research into stress-related illnessesD. widespread worry about its harmful effects3. The score of the Holmes-Rahe test shows ________________.A. how you can deal with life-changing eventsB. how helpful events can change your lifeC. how stressful a major event can beD. how much pressure you are under4. Why is “such s implistic advice〞 (Line 1, Paragraph 3) impossible to follow?A. No one can stay on the same job for long.B. No prescription is effective in reducing stress.C. People have to get married someday.D. You could be missing chances as well.第二节〔一共5小题,每一小题2分,满分是10分〕根据短文内容,从短文后的选项里面选出能填入空白处的最正确选项,选项里面有两项为多余选项。
