The Influence of English Abbreviations on

Chinese Youngsters

Abstract: English abbreviations are the product of western culture, and it reflects western spirit. In the last 20 years, a large number of English abbreviations have been created and plenty of them have been applied in all aspects of our life. With the development of the culture communication between our country and western countries, more and more English abbreviations are introduced into our nation. English Abbreviations play an important role in our daily life and especially have enormous influences on teenager’s life. These influences have both positive influences and negative influences on the Chinese youth. It brings us not only convenience but also dross into our life. This paper introduces the English abbreviations’features and focuses on the influences on teenager’s life. After that, it gives some advice about how to reduce the negative influences on the Chinese youth. Finally, it gives a brief view on the attitude that Chinese youngsters should hold toward English abbreviations.

1. Introduction

English Abbreviations are the production of an era, are the representation and reflection of cultural development. In the fifties of the last century, English abbreviations are just a specific phenomenon. Due to the quick pace of life and the need for efficiency in our work, people want to use some simple things to replace the complex things. Owing to the above background of the times, in the late 20th century, the number of English abbreviations increased a lot. With the development of English abbreviations, these abbreviations are widely applied to all aspects of people’s lives, whether it is of national event or bagatelles, we can easily find its shadow in everyday life, and it plays an important role in our daily life.

The English abbreviation belongs to an important area of linguistic research at present, and the word-formation has its unique method. According to their structure characteristics, shortening words include: Initialism, Acronyms, Blending words, Clipped words and Abbreviations, numeral and initial words.

With the increasing number of English abbreviations used in Chinese in recent years, the abbreviations become an integral part of Chinese language system. Chinese youngsters are willing to accept foreign things, and have strong competence to learn the new things from other countries.
