童话离我们的现实生活确实存在着一定的差距。在《怪物史莱克》中，导演把这个距离再拉大，比如让一头驴子和一个比他大N倍的女龙谈恋爱，让一个美丽公主永远变成一个怪物，可是距离拉大了，反倒会令人面对现实有了一些深入的思考。从前童话故事听完也就过去了，但是这样一个不像是童话的故事是不是会留下一些什么呢？
再看看公主。她是一个睡美人，躺在一个高耸入云、有恶龙看守的高塔里（为什么公主一定要在这么险恶的环境下生活？）。说是睡美人，其实她只是在装睡，还故意摆出完美的睡态。她文静美丽的外表之下隐藏着另一面：她功夫了得，能像李小龙一样徒手对付歹徒，真是静如处子动如脱兔。但是，她最大的秘密是她一到了太阳落山之后就会变丑，变成一个绿皮肤、长耳朵、三围同一、如水桶一样的怪物。为了不吓死几个的，她只好在晚上隐藏自己。她叫菲奥娜。
不过，童话终究是童话，就算它再离谱，最后王子终究是要和公主在一起的。史莱克在驴子、恶龙的帮助下，打败了法克公爵，和菲奥娜在一起了。但是那个秘密还未揭开，这也是最大的一个悬念。这个悬念真的是扭转了之前我们的想象，因为菲奥娜在得到心爱的人的吻之后，她也永远变成了一个怪物。不过，我们不会为他们感到遗憾，因为这样才般配，就算是丑，在最爱的人眼中，她也是最美的那一个。
