Ⅰ.阅读理解

A

The United States government has decided that food

from cloned cattle, pigs and goats is safe to eat.The Food and

Drug Administration also says it found no risk in meat and

milk from cloned animals.

The F.D.A.had looked at studies for several years before it announced its decision in a final report this month. The United States Department of Agriculture supported the findings. But it says time is needed to clear the way for marketing meat and milk from clones.

The F.D.A.will not require any product to be registered as coming from clones.A producer would need to label(标注) a product“clone-free”.The agency says that could be misunderstood because the food is not different from other food.

But activists argue that the F.D.A.based its decision on incomplete research into possible risks. The Center for Food Safety criticized the use of studies supplied by cloning companies.Animal rights activists point out that cloning attempts often fail. They say cloning is cruel and can lead to suffering.

Congress(国会) has been trying to get the F.D.A.to do more studies. But the agency noted that experts in New Zealand and the European Union had come to the same findings about the safety of food from clones.Japan and South Korea say they want to study it further before taking action.

Products from cloning may not be widely used for several years.Clones cost much, which is why they are not widely used for feeding. The Agriculture Department says few clones will ever become food.Their traditionally raised animals would enter the food supply instead.

Authors Kyle Kurpinski and Terry D.Johnson pretty much have me convinced that human cloning is quite possible and is a future certainty.Kurpinski and Johnson are both bioengineering experts;unlike similar scientists you have seen in the movies, they both have a sense of humor. What surprises me is that Kurpinski and Johnson are able to take something as complicated as DNA and make it understandable.

The book Ho w to Defeat Your O w n Clone teaches us what is now known as DNA-encoded(编码),how that happens, and why people with similar DNA don't look

or act the same. The book not only helps us get a basic understanding of what DNA and its purpose are,but also explains cloning and stem cell(干细胞)research. It occurs to me that a lot of people who are against stem cell research don't know what they are protesting about. The authors provide a history of cloning,as well as information about stem cells.

The real fun starts when the authors attack various myths about cloning. Obviously, too many people have been watching too many bad movies and television programs.Remember they're just fictional stories. If,somehow, scientists manage to clone you, twenty years from now your clone isn't going to kill you.Among the myths explored and exploded are that a clone will know everything you know and will act as you do,that heads which are cut off can be kept alive, and that a clone has no belly button(肚脐).Many of the myths are ridiculous but many people believe them.

Kurpinski and Johnson also detail some bio-improvements “that really work”.You see, genes can be controlled to help you sleep better and become smarter, healthier, and taller.Well...not exactly you,but future generations.

If you do wind up in a battle with your own clone, who will be considerably younger than you, remember that it is not you and that it doesn't know what you know.

Ⅱ.阅读七选五

Each year, many animal species die out. They join the

countless species that have gone extinct over the course of

the earth's history and many people believe they disappear

forever.__1__

Now some scientists are focusing on the ability to bring back extinct species. This doesn't mean the plot of Jurassic Park is going to become a reality. The researchers need DNA to clone a species.__2__ Dinosaurs have been gone too long for any of their DNA to remain in fossils.

But there's a very real chance that we will be able to bring back more recently

extinct species.__3__ In 2003,a team of Spanish and French scientists recreated the Pyrenean ibex, which had gone extinct three years earlier. The new animal didn't survive long, but scientific advances could improve the success rate.In January,Australian scientists announced that they were on their way to bringing back the gastric brooding frog.

That we can bring species back doesn't mean that we should do that. There may be much benefit of reviving(使复生)a species, but there's no way to know how it will turn out.__4__ Or might it crowd out existing species?Environmentalists worry that our ability to bring species back might cut down support for the hard work of traditional conservation.

__5__ If we can correct our mistake, why not use the chance to do that?As Stewart Brand, a businessman and environmentalist, recently said,“Humans have made a huge hole in nature. We have the ability now to repair some of that damage.”

A.DNA is the chemical that carries the structure of a living thing.

B.In addition, most people think that the extinction of some animals is really humans' mistake.

C.However, some people argue that the extinction of some animals is really our mistake.

D.This could even include Ice Age animals like the woolly mammoth.

E.However, you might need to redefine(重新定义) “forever”.

F.This could even be true to dinosaurs that were extinct long ago.

G.For example, would a passenger pigeon fit into its old habitat?

人教版高中英语选修6各单元课文原文

选修6 Unit 1 Art-Reading A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones, starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages (5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance (15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values graduallv replaced those held in the Middle Ages.People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess t heir own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the roles of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism (late 19th to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal. from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes. Naturally, these changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris.

Sports in America take various forms: organized competitive struggles, athletic games, hunting and fishing. Most sports are seasonal, so that what is happening in sports depends upon the time of year. Baseball is the most popular sport in the US. It is played throughout the spring and summer, and professional baseball teams play well into the fall. Football is the most popular sport in the fall. The game originated as a college sport more than 75 years ago. It’s not the same as European football or soccer. In American football there are 11 players as well on each team, and they are dressed in padded uniforms and helmets because the game is rough and injuries are likely to occur. It is still played by almost every college and university in the country. Basketball is the winner sport in American schools and colleges. Like football, basketball originated in the US. Many Americans prefer it to football because it is played indoors throughout the winter and because it is a faster game. And the famous NBA games are considered the best of this game. Other sports attracting a great many people include wrestling, boxing and horse-racing. Although horse-racing fans call themsel ves sportsmen, the exactness of the term is questionable, as only the jockeys who ride the horses in the races can be considered athletes. The so-called sportsmen are the spectators, who do not come primarily to see the horse-racing, but to bet upon the ou tcome of each race. Gambling is the attraction of horse-racing. 1.
