The purposes of Comparison and Contrast
With comparison and contrast, the purpose is not just to point out similarities and differences or advantages and disadvantages, but to present information about something unfamiliar by comparing it with something familiar; to show the superiority of one thing by contrasting it with another; to show the similarities or differences of two things to help the reader evaluate them.
A comparison paragraph focuses on similarities, while a contrast paragraph on differences.
Comparison and contrast are frequently combined to give a full treatment of a topic. However, A paragraph usually concentrates only on similarities or differences, not both at the same time.

When a writer is comparing, he is pointing out the similarities that exist between subjects or items (such as persons, things, or ideas).
When a writer is contrasting, he is pointing out the differences between subjects or items, even the two different aspects of the same subject (e.g., the advantages vs. the disadvantages of a personal computer).

For Americans ‘a long time’ may be anything from forty years to forty minutes, depending on the circumstances. To an American businessman a proposal that could be completed within forty years might be ‘too far into the future’ to be considered. A motorist who gets involved in a traffic accident would be in great trouble with the police if he waited twentyfour hours to report the accident. An hour would be too long a time to be late for a business appointment or a date. Americans are so timeconscious that promptness is not only a virtue; it is an obligation.

• There are two major ways of organizing paragraphs of comparison and contrast.
• One way is to examine one thing thoroughly and then start the other– Allabout pattern; The other way is to examine two things at the same time, discussing them point by point– Seesaw pattern.

• A brief consideration of Egyptian mythology and the mythology of the Greeks is enough to convince us of the revolution in thought that must have taken place from one age to the other. The Egyptian gods had no resemblance to anything in the real world; the Greek gods were fashioned after real Greek people. The Egyptian artists’ interpretations of the divine were horrid bestial shapes that combined men’s heads with bird’s bodies or terrifying nightmares. The monstrosities of an invisible world were what the Egyptians worshiped. The Greek interpretation of divinity is not so dark a picture.

1. Here the pace of life is gentle.
2. There is time to reflect on the beauty of the world.
3. In a village, life is closer to nature. The changing seasons can be clearly observed.

A There are some distinct similarities between fast food and home cooked meals. The first similarity is that they both provide a variety of choices. There are a number of selections available in restaurants; salads, burgers, sandwiches and more. Similarly, if the ingredients are available, anything can be cooked in your own kitchen. Another similarity is that each can be relatively inexpensive. Fast food can be very cheap since many meals are under five dollars. In the same way, home cooked meals also can be reasonable especially if ingredients are carefully considered for the cost. Thirdly, both fast food and home cooked meals can be delicious. We know that many people enjoy the taste of fast food because it is popular around the world. Likewise, home cooked meals can certainly be yummy if they are prepared just as you like them.
