11-12.2 大英2 重修考试复习题

11-12.2大英2 重修考试练习题第一. Reading Comprehension阅读理解题Passage one. The first true piece of sports equipment that man invented was the ball. In ancient Egypt, as everywhere, pitching(投掷) stones was a favorite children’s game. But a badly thrown rock could hurt a child. Looking for something less dangerous to throw, the Egyptians made what were probably the first balls. At first, balls were made of grass or leaves held together by vines(藤). Later they were made of pieces of animal skin sewed together and stuffed(塞满) with feathers or hay.Even though the Egyptians were warlike, they found time for peaceful games. Before long they had developed a number of ball games, each with its own set of rules. Perhaps they played ball more for instruction than for fun. Ball playing was thought of mainly as a way to teach young men the speed and skill they would need for war.1. The ball was probably invented because _________.A) throwing stones often caused injuries.B) throwing stones was not fun.C) games with stones did not have rules.D) rocks were too heavy to throw.2. The first balls were probably made of _______.A) animal skins stuffed with rocks.B) twists of hayC) hides(兽皮)stuffed with hay or feathers.D) grass and leaves tied with vines.3. This selection says that the Egyptians played _________.A) many different games with balls.B) many different kinds of gamesC) only one ball gameD) different games with similar rules4. The Egyptians thought that ball playing was __________.A)childish B)difficultC)not enjoyable D)worthwhile5. The best title for this selection is ___________.A) The First Ball GamesB) How Egyptian Children Played GamesC) Egyptian SportsD) The Beginning of SportsPassage TwoThe sense of sound is one of our most important means of knowing what is going on around us. Sound has a waste product, too, in the form of noise. Noise has been called unwanted sound. Noise is growing and it may get much worse before it gets any better.Scientists, for several years, have been studying how noise affects people and animals. They are surprised by what they have learned. Peace and quiet are becoming harder to find. Noise pollution is a threat that should be looked at carefully. There is a saying that it is so noisy that you can’t hear yourself think. Doctors who study noise believe that we must sometimes hear ourselves think. If we don’t, we may have headaches, other aches and pains, or even worse mental problems.Noise adds more tension(紧张) to a society that already faces enough stress. But noise is not a new problem. In ancient Rome, people complained so much about noise that the government stopped chariots(四轮马车)from moving through the streets at night!Ways of making less noise are now being tested. There are even laws controlling noise. We cannot return to the “good old days”of peace and quiet. But we can reduce noise —if we shout loudly enough about it .6. Why are scientists surprised by the findings in their noise study?A) Because the world is becoming more and more noisy.B) Because they have learned that noise is also a kind of pollution.C) Because noise is an unwanted waste for human beings..D) Because people knew little about noise before.7. What may happen if we cannot hear ourselves think?A) We may forget what we have thought about.B) Our thoughts may be disturbed.C) Our mind may be harmed.D) We may have difficulty finding the right words.8. When the writer says we cannot return to the good old days, he means that ______.A) our society is becoming much worse than beforeB) in our modern society it is hard to lead a quiet lifeC) the old days were much happier than the present timeD) it is impossible for us to deal with noise as we did before9. From the last sentence of the passage we can learn that _____.A) we can put noise under control if we take effective measuresB) sometimes we have to shout loudly so that others can hear usC) shouting is a chief cause of noise pollution nowadaysD) it is important to warn people of the danger of noise pollution10. As is shown, the man in the picture uses a laptop at work and home, for business and entertainment, so obsessed that he even dreams about bending over his laptop. It is undeniable that this has been a common scene and the overuse of computers has aroused great concern. In my opinion, people should be cautious of the excessive use of computers for the following reasons. In the first place, it will inevitably affect people’s health if they sit before computers and stare at the screens for long hours, which may result in muscle pain and visual impair. Secondly, playing computers alone isolates people from others. Relationships in the real world are maintained through human contact and spending time with each other instead of chitchatting online. In summary, people should cut down their computer use for health and social reasons. Computers are not controllers but tools in our life.参考范文2:As is graphically depicted in the cartoon, modern life has been dominated by computers. No matter the young man is in the office, at home, and in his spare time, the only friend he has is a computer. Even when he sleeps, what is in his dream is still the computer. Apparently, the cartoon aims to reveal the fact that the computer has begun to play a negative role in the modern life. The reasons why modern people are tied up with computers are as follows. To begin with, they have become increasingly busier in making money; therefore, they need a quick way to outlet their pressure and exhaustion and computer is their ideal companion. Moreover, computerscan assist people to deal with complicated working stuff, make friends, and entertain themselves because they have become growingly powerful and everything else is linked with them. For instance, two decades ago, computers were far from popular and people used them to practice typing letters and do basic works. However, with the Internet becoming pervasive, computers have integrated music, films, shopping, and everything we like into their worlds. Now, when we power on the all-mighty computers, what we want is out there for us.To sum up, this lifestyle is absolutely imperfect. In order to lead a healthy life, we are supposed to do more exercises and expose ourselves to the tangible world. Meanwhile, it is about time that we powered the computer off and talked with our friends and family face-to-face. Only in these ways will modern life become more beautiful for you and me.。

The manager learned that his secretary got caught in heavy traffic every evening on the way home. They agreed to have her work from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. This saved her at least 20-25 minutes driving time, a benefit to her at little or no loss to the company. They then studied her job in detail. English people ______A.have never discussed who is the world’s greatest dramatistB.never discuss any issue concerning the world’s greatest dramatistC.are sure who is the world’s greatest dramatistD.do not care who is the world’s greatest poet and dramatist12.Every Englishman knows ______A.more or less about Shakespeare B.Shakespeare, but only slightlyC.all Shakespeare’s writings D.only the name of the greatest English writer 13.Which of the following is true?A.We use all the words, phrases and quotations from Shakespeare’s writings.B.Shakespeare’s writings have become the property of those who are learning to speak English.C.It is likely to be true that people often do not know the origins of the words they useD All the words people use are taken from the writings of Shakespeare14.What does the word “proverb” mean?A.Familiar sayings B.Shakespeare’s plays.C.Complaints.D.Actors and actresses.15.Why is it worthwhile to study the various ways in which Shakespeare used English? A.English words have cha nged a lot since Shakespeare’s time.B.By doing so one can be fully aware of the richness of the English languageC. English words are now being used in the same way as in Shakespeare’s timeD. Beginners may have difficulty learning some aspects of English usageIII. 单句翻译1、我们不仅尊重父母,而且我尽力不辜负他们的期望。

A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have been in her middle twenties. She might have seven or eight children, and four or five of them lived till they were five years old. When the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties. After this, she could hardly find any work to make money because of the few opportunities and poor health. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five. She may live another thirty-five years and take paid work until sixty. This important change in women’s lives has also changed women’s economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school and took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never came back to it. Today, the school leaving age is sixteen. Many girls stay at school after that age. As women marry younger, more married women will only leave work just before their first child is born, and ma ny of them come back to work soon after. ( )Passage T woFear is mounting that the economic downturn in the US could turn into a deep and protracted recession of the kind that plagued Japan in the early 1990s, driving policymakers and investors to consider whether increasingly radical measures may be needed to avert such an outcome. This debate has superseded the old argument as to whether the US is in recession or not. Most economists now believe it is, following February’s grim jobs report and evidence of stagnation in real consumer spending.“The economic debate is shifting to how deep and long it will be,” said Richard Berner, chief US economist at Morgan Stanley.Until recently the mainstream view was that any recession would be mild, due to the lack of imbalances in the corporate sector outside housing. Growth outside the US was strong and there was a boost on the way from Federal Reserve rate cuts and the $168bn fiscal stimulus. But a darker view has taken hold as the labour market started to crack, house price declines have intensified and financ ial markets deteriorated further until the Fed’s latest liquidity operation. Economists worry that consumers are overextended and could start pulling back. There is growing awareness that monetary policy alone may not be able to curb the risk of a severe recession, because of wide risk spreads and constraints imposed by inflation.“The difficulties now facing policymakers – to maintain simultaneously real growth, price stability and financial stability – seem as great today, if not greater, than at any other time in the post-War period,” said William White, chief economist at the Bank for International Settlements. Some analysts expect a double-dip recession, with growth fading again after a short-lived boost from the fiscal stimulus around midyear. This bleak view is reflected in financial markets, where the return on five-year Treasury inflation-protected securities is slightly negative – suggesting that investors believe the Fed will not be able to run positive real interest rates on average for five years.26. One night all mechanical sounds stopped briefly; immediately half the people in the neighborhood awoke, sat upright, and exclaimed: "What was that?"also causes increased muscular tension, which at night may deprive the body of rest.Experiments have shown that 160 decibels of noise are fatal for small fur-bearing animals. Although equal exposure is not fatal to man, it may destroy hearing. Over the past thirty years the loudest sounds to which man has been exposed have increased from 120 decibels, the equivalent of the roar of a two-engine propeller plane, to 150 decibels, the blast of a four-engine jet. This is an average increase in volume of one decibel a year, and constitutes a potentially dangerous source of physical damage.36.The story about a Long Island suburb is retold in order to show that __A____.A we may find it easier to fall asleep in noisy surroundingsB contrary to popular belief, mechanical sounds are bearableC nowadays suburbs are not just as quiet as we expectD noise pollution has become a very serious problem37.The author refers to noise as ___C___.A an undesirable waste productB an unnecessary mechanical soundC a source of mental illnessD a measurement of the intensity of sound waves38.Noise may interfere with man's sleep by ___B___.A causing him to have terrible dreamsB distracting his attentionC increasing his muscular tensionD keeping him restless39.Sounds of 160 decibels may __A____.A be the loudest man can imageB do physical damage to manC cause certain small animals to dieD Both B and C.40.The author's purpose in writing this passage is to __A____.A draw our attention to the importance of controlling noiseB show that man has more tolerance than animals when exposed to noiseC give a brief introduction to sound measurementD illustrate that noise is a by-product of modernizationPassage ThreeIn recent years, large numbers of people are living a single life, at least temporarily, for this reason or other. Reading Comprehension (40%)Directions: In this section there are four reading passages followed by a total of twenty multiple-choice questions. Read the passages and then write your answers on your ANSWER SHEET.TEXT ASOMETHING ABOUT NAPLES just seems made for comedy. The name aloneconjures up pizza, and lovable, incorrigible innocents warbling “O Sole Mio”; a nutty little corner of the world where the id runs wild and the only answer to the question “Why?” appears to be “Why not?”Naples: the butter-side-down of Italian cities, where even the truth has a strangely fictitious tinge. One day a car rear-ended one of the city‟s minibuses. The bus driver got out to investigate. While he stood there talking, his only passenger took the wheel and drove off. Neither passenger nor bus was ever seen again. Then there was that busy lunch hour in the central post office when a crack in the ceiling opened and postal workers were overwhelmed by an avalanche of stale croissants. As the cleaners hauled away garbage bags of moldy breakfast rolls, the questions remained: Who? Why? And what else could still be up there? But Naples actually isn‟t so funny. Italy‟s third largest city, wi th 1.1 million people, has a much darker side, where chaos reigns: bag snatching and mugging, clogged streets of stupefying confusion, where traffic moves to mysterious laws of its own through multiple intersections whose traffic lights haven‟t functioned for months, maybe years—if they have lights at all. Packs of wild dogs roam the city‟s main park. Nineteen policemen on the anti-narcotics squad are arrested for accepting payoffs from the Camorra, the local Mafia. To many Italians, particularly those in the wealthy, industrialized north, none of this is surprising. To them Naples means political corruption, wasted federal subsidies, rampant organized crime, appallingly large families, and cunning, lazy people who prefer to do something shady rather than ho nest work……Neapolitans know their reputation. “People think nothing ever gets done here,” said a young professional woman. “Sometimes they say, …surely you come from Milan. You come from Naples? Naples?”Giovanni del Forno, an insurance executive, told me about his flight home from a northern Italian city: the plane waited on the tarmac for half an hour for a gate to become available. “And I began to hear the comments around me: …Well, here we are in Naples,‟” he said with a wince. “These comments make me suffer.”Neapolitans may complain, but most can‟t conceive of living anywhere else. The city has the intimacy, tension, and craziness of a large but intensely devoted family. The people have the same perverse pride as New Yorkers. They love even the things that don‟t work, and they love being Neapolitans. They know outsiders don‟t get it, and they don‟t care. “Even if you go away”, one woman said, “you remain a prisoner of this city. My city has many problems, but away from it I feel bad.”This is a city in which living on the brink of collapse is normal. Naples has survived wars, revolutions, floods, earthquakes, and eruptions of nearby Vesuvius. First a wealthy colony founded by the Greeks (who called it Neapolis, or “new city”), then a flourishing Roman resort, it lived through various incarnations under dynasties of Normans, Austrians, Spanish, and French, not to mention a glorious period as the resplendent capital of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. It was a brilliant, cultivated city that once ranked with London and Paris. The Nunziatella, the oldest military school in Italy, still basks in its two centuries of historic glory; the Teatro San Carlo remains one of the greatest opera houses in the world. The treasures of Pompeii grace the National Museum. Stretched luxuriantly between mountains and sea along the curving coast of the Bay of Naples, full of ornate palaces, gardens, churches, and works of art, with its mild climate and rich folklore, Naples in the last century was beloved by artists and writers. The most famous response to this magnificence was the comment by an unknown admirer, “See Naples and die.”Today that remark carries less poetic connotations. The bombardments of World War II were followed by the depredations of profiteers and politicians-for-rent who reduced the city to a demoralized shadow of itself, surviving on government handouts. Until five years ago city governments were cobbled together by warring political factions; some mayors lasted only a few months. A cholera outbreak in 1973 was followed in 1980 by a major earthquake. Its famous port has withered (though the U.S. Sixth Fleet command is still based just up the coast), industries have failed, tourists have fled, natives have moved out—it seems that only drug trafficking is booming. “Unlivable,” the Neapolitans say. “Incomprehensible”. “Martyred”.31. The two examples in the second and third paragraphs intend to show that______________.A. Naples has a high incidence of traffic accidents.B. anything extraordinary can happen in Naples.C. people there love to store food for years.D. everything appears to be on the wrong side.32. The following words are appropriate to describe traffic conditions in NaplesEXCEPT ______________.A. disorderB. overcrowdingC. insecurityD. inefficiency33. It can be concluded from the passage that the Northerners _____________.A. are critical of what Naples represents.B. sympathize with Neopolitans.C. share many things with Neopolitans,D. make every effort to shun Neopolitans.34. The author implies that Neopolitans‟ affection for the city ______________.A. was unrealisticB. went a bit too farC. was extraordinaryD. gave rise to concern35. When the author says “Today that remark carries less poetic connotations,” heactually means that _____________.A. the city can now boast very few poetsB. artists and writers have left for London and ParisC. the city underwent heavy bombing during the WarD. t he city‟s present problems obscured its glorious pastTEXT BSuppose you go into a fruiterer‟s shop, wanting an apple—you take up one, and on biting it, you find it is sour; you look at it, and see that it is hard and green. You take up another one, and that, too, is hard, green, and sour. The shopman offers you a third; but before biting it, you examine it, and find that it is hard and green, and you immediately say that you will not have it, as it must be sour, like those that you have already tried.Nothing can be simpler than that, you think; but if you will take the trouble to analyze and trace out into its logical elements what has been done by the mind, you will be greatly surprised. In the first place you have performed the operation of induction. You have found that, in two experiences, hardness and greenness in apples went together with sourness. It was so in the first case, and it was confirmed by the second. True, it is a very small basis, but still it is enough from which to make the induction; you generalize the facts, and you expect to find sourness in apples where you get hardness and greenness. You found upon that a general law that all hard and green apples are sour; and that, as far as it goes, is a perfect induction. Well, having got your natural law in this way, when you are offered another apple which you find is hard and green, you say, “All hard and green apples are sour; this apple is hard and green; therefore, this apple is sour.” That train of reasoning is what logicians call a syllogism, and has all its various parts and terms, —its major premises, its minor premises and its conclusion. And, by the help of further reasoning, which, if drawn out, would have to be exhibited in two or three other syllogisms, you arrive at your final determination, “I will not have that apple.” So that, you see, you have, in the first place, established a law by induction, and upon that you have founded a deduction, and reasoned out the special particular case.Well now, suppose, having got your conclusion of the law, that at some time afterwards, you are discussing the qualities of apples with a friend: you will say to him, “It is a very curious thing, —but I find that all hard and green apples are sour!” Your friend says to you, “But how do you know that?” You at once reply, “Oh, because I have tried them over and over again, and have always found them to be so.” Well, if we were talking science instead of common sense, we should call that an experimental verification. And, if st ill opposed, you go further, and say, “I have heard from the people in Somersetshire and Devonshire, where a large number of apples are grown, that they have observed the same thing. It is also found to be the case in Normandy, and in North America. In short, I find it to be the universal experience of mankind wherever attention has been directed to the subject.”Whereupon your friend, unless he is a very unreasonable man, agrees with you, and is convinced that you are quite right in the conclusion you have drawn. He believes, although perhaps he does not know he believes it, that the more extensive verifications are, the more results of the same kind arrived at —that the more varied the conditions under which the same results are attained, the more certain is the ultimate conclusion, and he disputes the question no further. He sees that the experiment has been tried under all sorts of conditions, as to time, place, and people, with the same result; and he says to you, therefore, that the law you have laid down must be a good one, and he must believe it.36. The writer is probably _____________.A. FrenchB. EnglishC. AmericanD. Italian37. Apples are used _____________.A. to convince the reader that fruit has no intellectB. to illustrate the subject of the passageC. to give color to the storyD. to show how foolish logic is38. The author has the approach of a(n) _____________.A. scientistB. artistC. novelistD. economist39. The term “natural law” as it appears in the text refers to ______________.A. common senseB. the “honor system”C. the result of an inductionD. the order of nature40. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A. Discovering the Natural Laws of ApplesB. The Uses of InductionC. Experimental Verification as an Adjunct to ReasoningD. The Logic of Everyday ReasoningTEXT CIn a country which must certainly have been a long way away from where we Rumanians live, all the young people decided to kill all the old people. It's an old, old story... What was the use of their going on living with white beards and all? They had lived their life, they'd had their time and that was that. Anyone who reached the age of fifty or a bit over—he was to be done away with.Lots of wise old men were killed and lots of wisdom passed away with them.Only one kind-hearted young man, so they say, took pity on his father; after all, he owed his life to him in the first place. So he hid him away in a cellar and took care of him.Time passed and a terrible drought came. Meadows and plough lands shriveled and withered and all the springs dried up. There was terrible famine, and sickness and all kinds of troubles came upon the young people thick and fast, and their hair began to go white before its time. They would have put up with everything as best they could, but more and worse troubles followed. The snow melted and spring was upon them without their having a single grain of seed to put in the ground. They scraped the floors of all the barns that used to be stacked so high they could hardly hold all the grain. All the king's councilors held long talks with the king but there was nothing they could do to get themselves out of their terrible trouble. From bishop to farm worker the whole people were overcome with horror and fear at the thought that spring had come and there was nothing to sow their fields with. The old man hidden in the cellar could see that his son was going about looking miserable all the time. One day he asked him: “What's making you look so thoughtful, my boy? Has anyone done you any harm? Are you in trouble? Tell your father all about it. He may be able to help you, even if it's only with words.”The son told him all the troubles straight away, from beginning to end. The old man thought for a little and then he said: “Don't tell anybody anything for the time being. But when the last patches of snow melt on the fields, take your plough and go and plough up the lane in front of your house. Rake it over after that and.., stop worry ing.” The boy followed the advice the old man had given him and what did he see? There came a quick spring rain and out of the ground there began to sprout wheat and maize, oats and barley and even beans and peas in some places. It seemed so wonderful that news of it spread up and down the country. It was a thing no one had ever heard of—a man's reaping where he hadn't sown.Of course the king got to hear of it too. He quickly ordered the lad to be brought before him. So he presented himself and of course he was now considered to be the wisest of the wise.“What did you do? How did you do it? Who told you what to do?” The king started asking him questions at once. All these questions confused the boy and he was afraid so he didn't tell him the true answer straight off. But in the end he admitted what had happened.“Bring me your father here,” the king ordered. So the old man was brought along too.“Well, your Majesty, just think how many seeds drop on the ground when people carry them home on their carts.”The old fellow was given a royal reward; he had saved the life of the whole nation and so the boy was pardoned too for not killing him.And ever since then, my friends, they haven't killed the old men any more.41. Great applications tell us we've done our job well, by attracting top-caliber students. But it's challenging to maintain the frenetic pace without forgetting these are all real people with real aspirations--people whose life stories we are here to unravel, if they will let us.The essay is a key piece of learning those life stories. I live near Los Angeles, where every day screenplays are read without regard for human context. The writer's life and dreams don't matter--all that matters is the writing, the ideas, the end product. On the other hand, in reading essays, context does matter: who wrote this? We are driven to put the jigsaw puzzle together because we think we are building a community, not just choosing neat stories. When I pick up a file, I want to know whether the student has siblings or not, who his parents are, where he went to high school. Then I want the essay to help the rest of the application make sense, to humanize all the numbers that flow past.I am looking for insight.A brilliantly written essay may compel me to look beyond superficial shortcomings in an application. But if no recommendation or grade or test score hints at such writing talent, I may succumb to cynicism and assume the writer had help--maybe too much. In the worst cases, I may find that I have read it before--with name and place changed--on the Internet, in an essay-editing service or a “best essays” hook. The most appealing essays take the opportunity to show a voice not rendered homogeneous and pasteurized. But sometimes the essays tell us too much. Pomona offers this instruction with one essay option: “We realize that not everything done in life is about getting into college. Tell us about something you did that was just plain fun.”One student grimly reported that nothing was fun because in his family everything was about getting into college. Every activity, course choice and spare moment. It did spark our sympathy, but it almost led to a call to Child Protective Services as well.Perfection isn't required. We have seen phenomenal errors in essays that haven't damaged a student at all. I recall a student who wrote of the July 1969 lunar landing of--I kid you not--Louis Armstrong. I read on, shaking my head. This student was great--a jazz trumpeter who longed to study astronomy. It was a classic slip and perhaps a hurried merging of two personal heroes. He was offered admission, graduated and went on for a PhD in astrophysics. He may not have been as memorable if he had named “Nell” instead of “Louis” in his essay's opening line. Hey, we're human, too.An essay that is rough around the edges may still be compelling. Good ideas make an impression, even when expressed with bad punctuation and spelling errors. Energy and excitement can be communicated. I'm not suggesting the “I came, I saw, I conquered” approach to essay writing, nor the “I saved the world” angle taken by some students who write about community-service projects. I'm talking about smaller moments that are well captured. Essays don't require the life tragedy that so many seem to think is necessary. Not all admission offers come out of sympathy!Admissions officers, even at the most selective institutions, really aren't looking for perfection in 17-and 18-year-olds. We are looking for the human being behind the roster of activities and grades. We are looking for those who can let down their guard just a bit to allow others in. We are looking for people whose egos won't get in the way of learning, students whose investment in ideas and words tells us--in the con-text of their records--that they are aware of a world beyond their own homes, schools, grades and scores. A picture, they say, is worth a thousand words. To us, an essay that reveals a student's unaltered voice is worth much, much more.45. It can be inferred from the first paragraph that _________.A. reviewing applications is a tedious and exhausting task.B. there are a lot of applications that need attending to quickly.C. people tend to tell their life stories in their applications.D. reviewing applications is a constant headache to the teachers.46. 英语重修试题及答案2Test TwoReading ComprehensionPassage 1Last Thursday an old chap came to our school to talk about the evils of smoking. He said he wouldn't go on for too long, and we saw him take his wristwatch off and lay it on the table. I can't remember what he said about smoking because Slater and I had other things to think about. He finished when the bell rang for playtime, and the headmaster told us to go out. Slater happened to slip.In the playground Slater showed me the watch. He put it on his wrist, and it looked lovely. I was wishing that I'd been the one to slip by the table, because it was a beautiful watch, gold by the look of it. The headmaster came outside then, and the old boy was with him. They walked about, looking around and talking all the time. After a bit the bell rang, and we got into our lines, ready to go in.The headmaster said, "I've got a little job for you boys. This gentleman, our lecturer, has just lost his watch in the playground. It's happened before, he says --- it just slips off his wrist. So look around for it, will you See if you're clever enough to find it.I've no doubt the boy who does so will get a useful reward "Well, of course, Slater wasn't going to miss a chance like that. He's just about the luckiest devil in the school --- rewards just drop into his hands. We all walked about the playground, looking for the watch. And I wasn't a bit surprised when Slater bent down as if he was picking something up. Then he hurried past me towards the old man."Where are you going" I called out, though I knew very well where he was going. "Where do you think" he called back. And the next minute there was Slater, all smiles, handing over the watch to the old fellow and hanging about for the reward. But the lecturer didn't seem at all pleased. In fact he looked quite ready to put a knife in Slater's heart --- until the headmaster burst out laughing. Then they both laughed. Slater told me afterwards that the old man hadn't even said "Thank you" for the watch. The thing that puzzled us most of all was that Slater didn't get any reward. When he reminded the headmaster about it, the headmaster said: "Ah yes, we mustn't forget that I said ‘a useful reward’, didn't I" And then he gave Slater a big sheet of paper and told him to write a composition on the evils of smoking. Slater says he hasn't got a clue what to write.1. What were the boys thinking about during the lectureA) They were not thinking about anything.B) They were thinking about the evils of smoking.C) About the watch --- how to get it, perhaps.D) They thought that the headmaster was very clever.2. Why did the story-teller wish that he had slippedA) Because it was a beautiful watch.B) He thought he could have taken the watch if he had slipped.C) If that had happened, the watch wouldn't have been lost.D) In that case he wouldn't have given it back to the lecturer.3. "The headmaster came outside then, and the old boy was with him." Who was the old boyA) An old student. B) The lecturer. C) The headmaster's son. D) A servant.4. When Slater "bent down", what was he trying to doA) He had to bend down in order to pick up the watch.B) He was trying to hide the fact that he had found the watch.C) The watch had slipped off his wrist, and he was trying to pick it up.D) He was pretending to have found something.5. Why didn't Slater get the kind of reward he expectedA) The headmaster had forgot it, probably.B) Because the lecturer did not agree to give him any reward.C) Because the headmaster never meant to give the usual kind of reward to anyone.D) Because the headmaster did not keep his word.Passage 2Many poor people made good money by selling their own living, healthy teeth. Young people's teeth were in special demand. Dentists with rich, gap-toothed patients often had several live-tooth sellers at hand ready to have their teeth pulled. The idea was to get the best match and fit for the patient. Miss Smith's second-from-the-middle tooth might be no good. But maybe Mr Brown's third-left would fit her ladyship's socket. Some of the double extractions took place right on the spot. The bad tooth would be hauled out. Then the newly drawn live one would be popped into the socket. Strange though it may seem these transplants sometimes worked. At least they would last for a year or two. But they, like ivory teeth, had to be tied firmly to the real teeth next to them.In some cases, neither carved teeth nor transplants worked -- no matter how rich or famous the patient. Next time you see a picture of George Washington, take a good look at it. There's something strange about the president's mouth. It has a puffed look, especially under the lower lip. Washington suffered from poor teeth. He lost most of them when he was quite young. Dentist after dentist tried to fit him with suitable dentures. But none of them were really satisfactory. One set had dogs' teeth in the top. In the bottom were human teeth. The set was held together by strong, coiled, steel springs. It weighed nearly a quarter of a pound. That's quite a lot of bone, lead, wax, and iron to carry round in your mouth. Yet Washington never took out his false teeth in public, even to eat. He was too proud. The artist Gilbert Stuart was asked to paint Washington's portrait. But he was troubled at the way the president's lower lip jutted out. He told Washington to stuff wads of cotton between his chin and teeth. The result was the puffed-out look we see today in Washington's portrait on some American bills, coins, and stamps. One set of Washington's ill-fitting false teeth is still shown in the Dental Museum in Baltimore. It is a far cry from the light, strong, well-fitted, plastic and metal dentures of today.6. The best teeth for transplants probably came from ___________.A) living young people B) dead soldiers C) rich patients D) skillful dentists7. George Washington's lower lip jutted because ___________.A) he had suffered from poor teeth B) he had taken out his false teethC) his false teeth didn't fit well D) his jaw was too small8. Evidence of Washington's dental problems can be seen today __________.A) in the White House B) on some American money and stampsC) in the Dental Museum in Baltimore D) both B and C9. Gilbert was most probably a ___________.A) dentist B) portrait painter C) senior official D) guide in the Museum10. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the phrase "a far cry" in the last paragraphA) A shout in the distance. B) A loud yell. C) A similar remark. D) Something different.Passage 3In October 1949 the United Nations brought a number of specialists on food to Geneva, to discuss the problems of eating habits and food supplies of peoples throughout the world. One problem that interested the specialists particularly was a form of illness, about which little was known, among the children in Africa and Latin America. The World Health Organization(WHO) planned to study this disease to determine the relationship between the eating habits of the people and the disease. Two doctors were chosen to make the study. They flew to Africa south of the Sahara and during the next two months visited ten countries. They found that serious diseases of poor eating, often mistaken for other diseases, existed in all parts of Africa. The diseases were similar and could therefore all be named kwashiorkor. The diseased children are usually from one to four years old. As the illness progresses, the child's stomach becomes swollen by liquid collecting in the body. The skin changes color and may break out in open sores. The hair changes color and starts to fall out. The patient loses all interest in his surroundings and even in food, and becomes so weak that he wants to lie down all the time. Stomach liquids are no longer produced. The doctors reasoned that kwashiorkor was found in the young children of this age in many parts of Africa because of lack of milk or meat. Their mothers, after stopping their breast-feeding, gave them foods full of starches instead of greatly needed proteins. They found that the addition of milk to the food of children suffering from kwashiorkor saved many lives. The unbelievable thing about kwashiorkor is that the very existence of the disease --- which has been killing thousands of children for centuries --- was not even recognized in Latin America as recently as ten years ago. The deaths of those children were mistakenly listed as due to other diseases. It was the WHO's work in Africa that led to the discovery of the problem in Central America.11. From the passage we learn that kwashiorkor is a disease caused by ______.A) poor living conditions B) lack of proteins in foodC) breast-feeding D) lack of food12. Where was the study of this disease carried outA) The Sahara. B) Central America. C) Latin America D) Africa.13. It is difficult to discover kwashiorkor because ______.A) it has no symptoms at all B) it is hard to identify signs of itC) it doesn't last long enough for careful observationD) it is hardly distinguishable from other diseases14. A main symptom of this disease is that children who have it __ ____.A) cannot stop liquid produce in the stomachB) have a big stomachC) can never satisfy their hungerD) are not able to sit or lie down15. What is mentioned as a simple but efficient way of curing this diseaseA) Taking a special medicine. B) Avoiding any food containing starch.C) Having more meat or milk. D) Taking medicines full of proteins.16. The disease has been known in the Latin AmericaA) for ten years B) only recently C) for dozens of years D) before the discovery in Africa17. What's the best title for the articleA) Milk and Meat Are Daily Necessities B) Kwashiorkor and Bad Eating HabitsC) A New Form of Illness in Africa and Latin America D) A Case of Eating HabitsPassage 4Physical fitness is the result of many factors -- good medical and dental care, proper nutrition, adequate rest and relaxation, and sensible personal habits. But these are never enough. An essential factor is regular physical activity -- exercise for abody that needs it to function well. All of us know that ordinary movements -- things like running, jumping, and bending -- are made by muscles. Muscles also do many other things. They suck air into your lungs, push food along your digestive tract, and tighten your blood vessels to raise blood pressure when you need more pressure for an emergency. Your heart is a muscular pump. When your muscles are not used, or are not used enough, they do not develop and grow properly. They soon become flabby and weak, shrink in size, and lose the ability to do the jobs they were meant to do.Recent studies showed that the average high school student spends fifteen to thirty hours a week watching television and only two hours a week in organized play or exercise. That is one reason why one-third of the 200,000 pupils tested for the President's Council on Physical Fitness failed a simple test of strength, stamina, and flexibility. Some of the boys and girls could not raise themselves to a sitting position without using their hands!Cars and buses, elevators and escalators, TV and push-button machines all tend to reduce strenuous physical activity. But our bodies still need exercise. Without it they soon become weak, ineffective, and unattractive.18. In the article, muscles are said to do all of the following EXCEPT __________.A) suck air B) tighten blood vesselsC) run, jump, bend D) reflect pains19. The thing to keep physical fitness discussed in this article is _________。

His secretary requested a 10% salary raise. The problem was that 10% was a large raise compared to the 5% other employees had received. Was there a win-win(双赢)way out of this problem? As they looked at the possibilities, several ideas appeared. The company starts work at 8 am and closes at 5 pm. The manager learned that his secretary got caught in heavy traffic every evening on the way home. They agreed to have her work from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. This saved her at least 20-25 minutes driving time, a benefit to her at little or no loss to the company. They then studied her job in detail. Before long they jointly developed a new idea which gave her more responsibilities, and, at the same time, more interesting work. Both parties benefitted from the changed arrangement of work. The raise itself was then discussed. A decision was made by agreeing on a 6% raise for three months and then an additional 12% later if the new responsibilities were properly performed.1. 单句翻译1、我们不仅尊重⽗母,⽽且我尽⼒不辜负他们的期望。

This saves them considerable time and money—especially if a candidate lives out of town.Don’t take these interviews lightly. It is important to prepare for a telephone interview just as you would do foe a regular interview. The employer will normally call or e-mail you in advance to set up an interview time. If possible, arrange for the interview to be held over a landline phone(座机), as it is more reliable than a mobile phone. Make sure that children, pets and other sources of interruption will be out of the room. Choose the best answer to each question. Then you should mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneFor anybody who ever failed a maths test, something marvellous happened in Stockholm on December 10, 2000. A soft-spoken fellow from Kansas -a guy who was turned down by the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) because his maths scores were too low and who never had much formal physics training -received the Nobel Prize in physics. This is slightly ironical, because Jack St Clair Kilby is not a physicist. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences was willing to overlook that minor detail, though, because Kilby did, after all, come up with the most valuable invention of the past half-century: the microchip. Jack Kilby's idea sparked the information age. The tiny silicon chip at the heart of all digital devices has arguably become the most important industrial commodity since crude oil. Without the chip, there could be no personal computers or mobile phones, no Internet or Play-Stations. The semiconductor integrated circuit has changed the world as fundamentally as did the light bulb, the telephone and the horseless carriage. But somehow the man who made the microchip has never achieved the recognition that Edison, Bell and Ford enjoyed. Thanks to the Nobel Prize, at age 78, Jack Kilby finally received the attention he deserved.31. Kilby is a(n) ____.A) American B) Frenchman C) Swedish D) Englishman32. Kilby won the Nobel Prize for ____.A) his great research done in MIT B) he is an excellent physicistC) he has had much formal training in physics D) he invented the microchip33. Before the invention of the microchip, ____ was the most important industrial commodity.A) telephone B) light bulb C) automobile D) crude oil35. The achievements made by Kilby were finally recognized ____.A) by his winning of Nobel Prize B) after the widespread of computersC) after he died D) when he was admitted by MITPassage TwoACT, Inc., is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides more than a hundred assessment, research, information, and program management services in the broad areas of educational planning, career planning, and workforce development. The concept for the American College Testing Program emerged in the 1950s, and the organization itself was founded in 1959. At this time, U. S. political and demographic (人口的) developments were inspiring major changes in attitudes about, and approaches to, higher education. Before 1959, there was only one nationwide college-entrance testingprogram, which focused on identifying the very best students for admission to the nation's elite universities. The remainder of college students were often admitted on the basis of family ties or entrance exams offered by individual institutions. In the late 1950s, large numbers of students were approaching college age and wanted to attend college. Financial aid to students was increasing, and most colleges wanted to grow. That was the atmosphere in which ACT's founders established theAmerican College Testing Program. As the nation's view of education has evolved to one embracing lifelong learning, ACT's programs have grown and evolved in the same direction, helping people plan for and assess learning throughout their lives from college through graduate school and also in the workplace.36. Which description about ACT is NOT true?A) It is a non-profit organization. B) It was founded in late 1950s.C) It provides services in many areas. D) It was founded by the U.S. government.37. Before 1959, ____.A) there was only one nationwide college entrance examinationB) no one ever came up with the idea of ACTC) only a few students could enter collegeD) some students didn't have to take the exams offered by individual colleges38. Their Japanese friends were very shocked, because the Japanese think that the numbers four and nine are unlucky. This i s because the Japanese for “four” is the same as an old Japanese word for “sorrow” and “darkness”.The young couple thought about the problem for a long time. The Englishman wanted to get married on 4th September because it was his mother’s birthday. His mother couldn’t come to Japan for the wedding, and he wanted her to feel part of the ceremony. The Japanese girl said she wasn’t superstitious but… There was also another problem. People don’t like t o live in a hours or flat that is number thirteen. People don’t like to have parties with thirteen people. People don’t like to do important things on the thirteenth of the month. Also, when you add the Japanese unlucky numbers together—nine plus four – they make thirteen. There aren’t many business meetings on the thirteenth of the month especially when the thirteenth of the month especially when the thirteenth is on Friday. Friday is always unlucky. Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden on a Friday, Jesus Christ died on a Friday. (There were thirteen people at His Last Supper.) In Europe, they killed criminals on a Friday. For some people, superstitions do the opposite things. My elder brother was born on the thirteenth. He passed his exams on the thirteenth. He married on the thirteenth. He became a pilot on the thirteenth. It was always a luck day for him. He was killed on the seventh.41. We learn from the passage that_____.A. the Japanese girl thought 4th September was a lucky dayB. the will-be bridegroom thought 4th September was a lucky dayC. both of them thought it was lucky dayD. neither of them thought it was lucky day42. Test TwoReading ComprehensionPassage 1Last Thursday an old chap came to our school to talk about the evils of smoking. So look around for it, will you See if you're clever enough to find it. I've no doubt the boy who does so will get a useful reward "Well, of course, Slater wasn't going to miss a chance like that. Why did the story-teller wish that he had slipped?A) Because it was a beautiful watch.B) He thought he could have taken the watch if he had slipped.C) If that had happened, the watch wouldn't have been lost.D) In that case he wouldn't have given it back to the lecturer.3. "The headmaster came outside then, and the old boy was with him." Who was the old boy?A) An old student. B) The lecturer. C) The headmaster's son. D) A servant.4. When Slater "bent down", what was he trying to do?A) He had to bend down in order to pick up the watch.B) He was trying to hide the fact that he had found the watch.C) The watch had slipped off his wrist, and he was trying to pick it up.D) He was pretending to have found something.5. Why didn't Slater get the kind of reward he expected?A) The headmaster had forgot it, probably.B) Because the lecturer did not agree to give him any reward.C) Because the headmaster never meant to give the usual kind of reward to anyone.D) Because the headmaster did not keep his word.Passage 2Many poor people made good money by selling their own living, healthy teeth. That's quitea lot of bone, lead, wax, and iron to carry round in your mouth. One problem that interested the specialists particularly was a form of illness, about which little was known, among the children in Africa and Latin America. The World Health Organization (WHO) planned to study this disease to determine the relationship between the eating habits of the people and the disease. Where was the study of this disease carried out?A) The Sahara. What is mentioned as a simple but efficient way of curing this disease?A) Taking a special medicine. An essential factor is regular physical activity -- exercise for a body that needs it to function well.
