As one might expect, this will result in long delays. As we've come all the way from the West Coast, we don't even have enough fuel to circle until the airport reopens. Therefore, we are going to be diverting toCleveland, and we should be landing in about thirty minutes. We'll take some fuelthere and get you back on your way to our original destination. I’m terribly sorryfor the delay. However, we’11 get you there just as soon as possible." It was at this moment that you could hear someone running up to the cockpit. The cockpit door flew open, and sure enough it was the lead flight attendant mumblingsomething like, "This can’t be happening. Further Listening and SpeakingListeningTask1:Celebrations on the New Year’s EveScriptOn December 31st, Americans welcome the New Year in various ways. Some people like to see the New Year in while traveling by boat. For example, people in Chicago, Illinois, can choose from several special holiday trips on Lake Michigan. These cruises include dinner and dancing to music performed by a band. In San Diego, California, a company offers New Year's Eve parties on the Pacific Ocean. It costs more than 100 dollars for each person.Other Americans have parties at home and invite all their friends. Many of these events are noisy. People shout and sing. They often blow on small noisemakers when the New Year arrives at midnight. They kiss their husband or wife or the person they are with. They dance to music. Other Americans spend a quiet evening at home. They drink champagne at midnight to welcome the New Year. Some people drink too much alcohol at New Year's Eve celebrations. It is a day when children honor their mothers with cards, gifts, and flowers. It was first observed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1907.Long before that, there were days honoring mothers even in ancient Greece. In those days, however, it was Rhea, the mother of the gods who was given honor.Later, in the 1600s, in England there was an annual observance called "Mothering Sunday". It was celebrated during June, on the fourth Sunday. On Mothering Sunday, the servants, who generally lived with their employers, were encouraged to return home and honor their mothers. It was traditional for them to bring a special cake along to celebrate the occasion. In the U.S., in 1907, Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Jarvispersuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia, to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, which was the second Sunday in May. The next year Mother's Day was again celebrated in Philadelphia. Jarvis and others began a letter-writing campaign to ministers, businessmen, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother s Day. They were successful. In 1914, the American President president proclaimed Mother s Day a national observance that was to be held each year on the second Sunday of May.Task3: St.Valentine’s StoryScriptLet me introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the third century. At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. He wanted to have a big army, and he expected men to volunteer to join. Seeing many men did not want to leave their wives and families, Claudius had a crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So he passed a law to forbid any more marriages. I thought it was preposterous! I certainly wasn't going to support that law!I was a priest, and one of my favorite activities was to marry couples. I kept on performing marriage ceremonies, secretly. One night, we heard footsteps and shouts of soldiers outside. It was scary! The couple I was marrying escaped in time, but I was caught. I was thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death. Then wonderful things happened. Many young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes up to my window. They wanted me to know that they, too, believed in love. One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Sometimes we wouldsit and talk for hours. She helped me to keep my spirits up. On the day I was to die, I left my friend a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty.I signed it, "Love from your Valentine."I believe that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine'sDay.News ReportA Famous Christmas MarketScriptReceiving Christmas presents is always fun, but buying them can be a headache. Thisis why many Christmas shoppers around Europe are now going to the German city ofNuremberg to visit its famous Christmas market, Christkindlesmarkt.. The four-hundred-year-old market is a child's paradise. Its 150 stalls sell all kindsof toys, gifts, and special foods. A staggering two million people visit the marketannually. The old city and market add a special feeling to Christmas. As one British tourist,Mivart Thomas, explains," There's something quite, sort of, medieval about theatmosphere here. There are quite a lot of old stalls--traditional-lookingstalls--and the cathedral in the background with lights all around; and just a fewminutes ago, the brass band was playing...playing Christmas carols. The wholeatmosphere is wonderful." The market maintains its Old World atmosphere withregulations saying what can and can't be sold. Not surprisingly, the focus is onthe family. The market's tourist officer, Gerd Lauterbauch, points out that themarket's name translates as "Christ child's market", and the idea behind it is tooffer presents for children on Christmas. Christmas markets are found in many Germancities, but Nuremberg's is the most famous. It gives a very different impressionfrom the one tourists expect, considering the city's Nazi past. And as word of themarket spreads around Europe, the market is becoming a tourist center.如有侵权请联系告知删除,感谢你们的配合!。

Thus all but a few cents on the dollar in ticket sales is paid out to a wide variety of external providers or internal cost centers. Moreover, the industry is structured so that airlines often act as tax collectors. Ticket prices include a number of fees, taxes, and surcharges they have little or no control over, and these are passed through to various providers. Airlines are also responsible for carrying out government regulations. If airlines carry passengers without proper documents on an international flight, they are responsible for carrying them back to the originating country.Analysis of the last five years shows that all the other players in the air transport chain are far more profitable than the airlines, who collect and pass through fees and revenues to them from ticket sales. While airlines as a whole earned 6% return on capital employed, airports earned 10%, catering companies 10-13%, handling companies 11-14%, aircraft lessors 5%, aircraft manufacturers 16%, and global distribution companies more than 30%.ScriptThe air travel industry is experiencing a short-term cycle of depression, with a significant drop in passenger numbers. However, cycles are a regular part of the aviation industry, and cycles do not change the fundamentals of economic growth, globalization, and people's desire to travel. Long-term trends for air traffic growth remain healthy. The present short-term declining cycle began modestly in early 2001 with the bursting of the high-tech stock market "bubble". After the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack, the normal cycle turned into an unusual downward cycle. Fear of long queues at security check points distorted the normal relationship between economic growth and air travel.Security improvements also add costs to airlines and airports, which are passed on to passengers. Short-distance travel bears a larger share of the burden because security costs are based on boardings and are a larger share of total costs for shorter trips. In time, however, this short-term recession will end, for the relationship between traffic and economic development will once again play its role. The major driver of long-term air travel growth is economic growth. Another cause of air travel growth is globalization of trade. The Internet further promotes travel by opening up global opportunities to many more people. Airline network improvements and declining fares lead to traffic expansion. Government deregulation enhances airline competition, which in turn encourages lower fares and more flights.Consumer confidence and business profits can have strong influences on air travel demand. Travelers treat air travel in the same way they treat durable goods such as computers and automobiles. When incomes go up, people tend to buy more and travel more. The current forecast shows that air travel will soon begin to grow, and an average annual growth of 5.1 percent is predicted for the next 20 years.。

systematic and thorough.Sometimes education systems can be used to promote doctrines or ideals as well as knowledge, and this can lead to abuse of the system.2.Primary education Primary or elementary education consists of the first years of formal, structured education that occur during childhood. In most countries, it is compulsory for children to receive primary education.Primary education generally begins when children are four to eight years of age.The division between primary and secondary education is somewhat arbitrary, but it generally occurs at about eleven or twelve years of age(adolescence);some educational systems have separate middle schools with the transition to the final stage of secondary education taking place at around the age of fourteen. In the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, etc., schools which provide primary education are referred to as primary schools.Primary schools in these countries are often subdivided into infant schools and junior schools.3.Secondary education In most contemporary educational systems of the world, secondary education consists of the second years of formal education that occur during adolescence. It is characterized by transition from the typicallycompulsory, comprehensive primary education for minors to the optional, selective tertiary, “post-secondary”, or “higher” education(e.g., university, vocational school)for adults. The exact boundary between primary and secondary education varies from country to country and even within them, but is generally around the seventh to the tenth year of education.Secondary education occurs mainly during the teenage years. The purpose of secondary education can be to give common knowledge, to prepare for either higher education or vocational education, or to train directly to a profession.4.Higher educationHigher education, also called tertiary, third stage or post secondary education, often known as academia, is the non-compulsory educational level following the completion of a school providing a secondary education, such as a high school, secondary school, or gymnasium.T ertiary education is normally taken to include undergraduate and postgraduate education, as well as vocational education and training.Colleges and universities are the main institutions that provide tertiary education.Tertiary education generally results in the receipt of certificates, diplomas, or academic degrees.Higher education includes teaching, research and social services activities of universities, and within the realm of teaching, it includes both the undergraduate level(sometimes referred to as tertiary education)and the graduate(or postgraduate)level(sometimes referred to as graduate school). In most developed countries a high proportion of the population(up to 50%)now enter higher education at some time in their lives.Higher education is therefore very important to national economies, both as a significant industry in its own right, and as a source of trained and educated personnel for the rest of the economy.5.Adulteducation Lifelong, or adult, education has become widespread in many countries. However, education is still seen by many as something aimed at children, and adult education is often branded as adult learning or lifelong learning.Adult education takes on many forms, from formal class-based learning to self-directed learning.Lending libraries provide inexpensive informal access to books and other self-instructional materials. The rise in computer ownership and internet access has given both adults and children greater access to both formal and informal education.Passage B 1.Choose a major at American universities Students can either select a major or declare themselves undecided at the time when they submit an application for admission into American universities or colleges. In fact, they can remain undecided till the end of their first or at some schools even second year of lost confidence in herself.Blessed with sensual looks and unbounded confidence, Susann went from unknown to the best-selling author of the 1960s.Her most notable book was Valley of the Dolls, a book that broke sales records and spawned a movie and a TV series. Her other novels include The Love Machine and Once Is Not Enough.III.Text Structure Analysis This passage presents some tips on how to make Don’t you look at the road sign when you are driving?V Let’s TalkSpeeding Ticket,A policeman stops a driver and says to the driver,“Sir,you were speeding. Can I see your license, please?”The driver replies.“I don’t have one.”“You don’t have one?”The driver answers.“I lost it for drunk driving.”The policeman is surprised.“I see. Will you show me your vehicle registration papers.please?”“I m sorry.I can’t do that.”The policeman asks.“Why not?”“I stole this car.”The Officer says,“Stole it?”The driver answers,“Yes,and I killed the owner.”The 0fficer is shocked.“You did what?”“She’s in the trunk if you want to see.”The officer is horrified and calls for backup.Within minutes, five police cars show up,surrounding the car.A police chief cautiously approaches the car, asking,“Sir,could you open the trunk of your car, please?”The driver opens the trunk, revealing nothing but all empty trunk. The chief says,“Is this your car, sir?”The driver says“Yes.”and hands over the registration papers. The 0fficer iS quite surprised.“0ne of my 0fficers says you don’t have a driving license.”The driver quickly produces his license. The chief examines it and finds nothing wrong. He looks puzzled.“Thank you, sir. One of my Officers told me you didn’t have a 1icense,stole this car,and murdered the owner.”The man replies,“I bet the lying bastard told you 1 was speeding, too!”Possible Retelling for the Teacher’s ReferenceA police 0fficer pulls over a driver and orders him to produce his driver’s license because he was speeding. The driver claims that he has lost his license for drunk driving. The officer is surprised and asks him to show his vehicle registration papers. The driver then answers that he does not have those papers, for he stole the car and killed the owner, though nobody knows why he says so.The officer is so shocked that he cannot believe his ears,so he asks the driver to say it again. To confirm what he has said, the driver says the lady’s body is in the trunk.By now the officeris horrified.so he calls the police station for support. When the police chief arrives,he orders the driver to open the trunk to find evidence of the crime. The driver opens it,but it is empty;and this shows that he is innocent.Unconvinced, the chief asks for his vehicle registration papers and license to see whether he is guilty~,,,The driver quickly hands over both to show that he is really innocent. The chief is now puzzled, saying that an 9mcer did report to him that the driver did not have a license, stole the car, and killed the owner. To this, the driver answers that he bets the officer must have said he was speeding as well.By saying so,the driver suggests that the officer,S accusation of his speeding must be false too DiscussionPossible Answer for the Teacher’s ReferenceEven if the driver cleverly shows that he is not guilty of stealing the car and killing the owner, this does not necessarily mean he did not speed. We must take all possibilities into consideration. To begin with,we should try to find out whether there is any evidence to show the driver was speeding.Forexample,we can check the records of the radar device or police video,or find human witnesses.Failing this,we may check whether the driver had any record of lying or cheating,or whether he had many previous traffic violations 0r a criminal record. If so,we can hardly trust his words. But this cannot yet provide conclusive evidence of his speeding. We might like to investigate whether the police officer has a record of lying or cheating since his statement contradicts the driver’s.This is normally impossible, for a habitual liar would have been dismissed from the police force. In fact,a policeman is usually assumed to be honest unless proved otherwise in a court of law.If the driver is found guilty of speeding,he should be punished for that as well as for the lies he told about the theft and murderVI Further Listening and SpeakingTask 1:Emergency CallOperator: Hello. Furthering Listening and SpeakingListeningTask 1: The Origin of the InternetThe story of the Internet begins in the late 1950s. The Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957. The Pentagon set up a research team in 1958 to create a computer network to operate during disasters like a nuclear war. The resulting network linked U.S. scientific and academic researchers. It grew into the World Wide Web or the Internet that became the network system of the Information Age. In 1985, the National ScienceFoundation created a network which provided a free national service toany U.S. research and education institution. Later, large corporations began to build their own networks. Al l those networks finally joined the Pentagon’s network to form the Internet. By the 1990s, anyone with a computer, a modern, and Internet software could link up to the Internet. In the future, the Internet will probably grow more complex and become part of a larger network called the information highway. With that people could bank, shop, watch TV, and perform many other activities online. Task2: The Internet—A Small TownThe Internet is a global network, but in many ways it’s like a small town with similar services to offer. There are electronic post offices to send and receive e-mail, functioning somewhat more efficiently than the Post Office we know. There are libraries of information that stay open 24 hours a day with millions of books and documents to browse or search through on the World Wide Web or WWW. You can also enjoy real-time text-based communication, using written or printed material to communicate with others immediately and almost “face to face”. Local coffee shops are seen in the guise of chat room, with people dropping by at all hours of the day and night to socialize. Online education and training is available just as it is in a “bricks and mortar” university or school. Online banking offers you all the services available at your local bank, without fearing to be mugged at an ATM. You can buy almost anything, listen to your local radio station or do your grocery shopping. Indeed, the Internet is your town in a box!1. F2. Second, a woman wanted to make clear who would walk the dog. Third, one man wanted to be entitled to a divorce if his future wife gained more than 15 pounds once she married him.2. A prenuptial agreement, or prenup , is a contract negotiated by lawyers and signed by the prospective marriage partners before the wedding, mainly designed to deal with financial issues if they divorce.3. Second, a prenuptial agreement signed under pressure can cause problems. Finally, there can be a dispute over premarital agreements if a couple decides to divorce while living abroad , or when they have different passports.6. prenuptial agreements are almost ignored by British courts because English law says that the circumstances of a marriage aren‟tstatic, and therefore a judge should decide how financial assets will be divided.7. For one thing, the divorce rate in the US is very high and is often accompanied by money disputes. For another ,laying bare all one‟s finances can sometimes save a couple from a terrible marriage.8. Teacher’s SummaryThis passage narrates the Walt Disney orgnization’s experiences in setting up its first theme park in Europe near paris: Euro Disneyland. Different people and different organizations may have different responses to Euro Disney. These have included objections from French intellectuals that the park is polluting the French culture and legal issues in respect of the dress code for its employees. Euro Disney has, however, made strong efforts to Europeanize its theme park. The author looks into the questions such as: Would Euro Disney be a site of a pleasant blend of cultures ora painful clash Would it make money and expand or lose money and close2.Questions on the Topic and the Passage1)Why did a labor inspector take the Disney organization to court--Because he believed that the company’s dress and appearance codeoffended individual liberty and violated French labor law.2)What is the writer’s purpose to cite the case in the passage--To show that the company faces some delicate culture issues while it gets ready to open its theme park near Paris.3)How did the Disney management react to charges like this--It argued that all employees have to obey the company’s code about appearance and it believed that an employee should think a job is more important than his appearance.4)What did the French government do to attract Euro Disneyland toParis--It made an extraordinary series of tax and financial concessions in order to attract it.5)What attitudes did French intellectuals hold toward the EuroDisneyland project--They had a negative attitude toward the project and criticized it.6)What kind of criticism did the Disney management receive on theEuro Disneyland project as implied in the passage--It was criticized as being culturally insensitive.7)What has the Disney management done to make Euro Disneyland moreEuropean--The Disney management has tried to make Euro Disneyland unique in a manner appropriate to its European home. What’s more, ghe direction signs will be in French as well as English and some performers will speak French, Spanish and English.8)What advantage does Euro Disneyland have in attracting tourists--Its short distance to Paris.Ⅱ. Background Information1. Euro Disneyland: Construction of the Euro Disneyland began in 1988, and the entertainment resort officially opened as Euro Disney on April 12, 1992, but attendance was disappointingly low. 500,000 guests were expected on opening day, but only a fraction of this number turned out, and the numbers fell further after the first three months. Some believe the park was built larger than it should have been, and the project carried too much debt. Additionally, the park failed to plan for certain cultural issues such as initially not offering wine in its restaurants and trying to offer more French food on its menus to visitors who were more interested in distinctly American cuisine. High entrance fees were also blamed for the lack of visitors. Furthermore, the theme park faced protests by commentators who thought a Disney park in France would harm French culture with its American influence; some went as far as to call the project a "cultural Chernobyl".On October 1, 1994, Euro Disney changed its name to Disneyland Paris. As a result of the name change, the addition of more attractions, and the retooling of the entire theme park complex to better appeal to European tastes, in 1995, Disneyland Resort Paris finally turned a profit. But profits for the park have been small, when it has been profitable at all.On March 16, 2002, Disneyland Resort Paris introduced its second theme park, Walt Disney Studios. The tenth Disney theme park in the world, Walt Disney Studios park opened with the aim of keeping visitors to the resorton property for more days, but the park was criticized for not having enough attractions, many of which were copied from Disney-MGM Studios at Walt Disney World. That same year, Euro Disney and the Walt Disney Company announced another annual profit for Disneyland Resort Paris. But it has incurred a net loss in the following three years, and the park is still about US$2 billion in debt.2. Theme park:Also known as amusement parks, theme parks are outdoor areas for public entertainment with amusing activities and big machines to ride on, or play games, etc. which are sometimes all based on a single subject, for example, space travel. The first theme park was Disneyland, in Anaheim, California, opened in 1955 and based on Walt Disney's cartoon characters.3. TGV: The name "Train à Grande Vitesse (TGV)" translated into English means high speed train. The TGV is a system which comprises train, track, and signaling technologies, that when combined make high speeds (typically 300 km/h, or 186 mph) possible. The TGV system is owned and operated by SNCF, the French national railways, and is an integral part of French rail travel. The TGV program was launched in the late 1960s. Today, there are three major trunk lines radiating out of Paris, the most recent one being the Nord-Europe line, opened in 1993 and connects Paris to Lille, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and Britain through the Channel Tunnel. Extensions continue to be built, although budgetary constraints haveslowed the momentum of the TGV expansion.4. Sleeping Beauty is a fairy-tale heroine who slept for 100 years until wakened by the kiss of a prince.5. Snow White is the main character in an old fairy tale. Snow White isa beautiful princess who has a jealous stepmother. The stepmother owns a magic mirror which when asked "Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest of us all" always answers that she is the most beautiful, until one day it says "Snow White". The stepmother is very angry and sends Snow White into the forest to be killed. Snow White does not die, but finds and lives with the seven dwarfs. Her stepmother tries to kill her with a poisoned apple, but instead of dying she goes to sleep until a prince kisses her and wakes her, and they live happily ever after.6. Peter Pan is the main character in a story entitled the same by James Barrie (Scottish playwright and novelist, 1860-1937), a young boy who never grows up but lives in a magic land called Never-Never Land. In the story, three children, Michael, John, and Wendy, go with Peter Pan and Tinkerbell to stay in the Never-Never Land, where they have many adventures. Peter Pan's enemy in the story is Captain Hook, an evil pirate who has a metal hook in the place of one of his hands. Captain Hook lost his hand in a fight with Peter Pan, and Peter Pan threw the hand into the water. It was eaten by a crocodile, which liked the taste so much that it then followed Captain Hook around trying to catch and eat the rest of him.7. Pinocchio:The international classic of childhood literature The Adventures of Pinocchio was written by Carlo Lorenzini (Italian journalist and writer, 1826-1890) under the pen name of C. Collodi. Its hero Pinocchio is a little wooden puppet who walks and talks, and whose nose grows every time he tells a lie.8. Mickey Mouse is probably the most famous of the Disney cartoon characters. Making his debut in "Steamboat Willie" at the Colony Theater in New York City on November 18, 1928, Mickey went on to star in over 120 different cartoons. He also starred in "The Mickey Mouse Club" television show of the 1950s.Mickey Mouse's original drawings used circles for his head, body and ears. 1939's "The Pointer" saw a bold, new design for Mickey as his body became more pear-shaped and pupils were added to his eyes to increase his range of expression. Later on, animators of the 1940s would add a perspective aspect to his ears, giving them a three-dimensional effect. This change, however, was short-lived. The Mickey Mouse of today appears much as he did in the early days with the exception of a costume change here and there.Mickey Mouse's original drawings used circles for his head, body and ears. 1939's "The Pointer" saw a bold, new design for Mickey as his body became more pear-shaped and pupils were added to his eyes to increase his range of expression. Later, those duties were assumed by Jim Macdonald and today Wayne Allwine provides Mickey's distinctive voice.Mickey Mouse has appeared on thousands of merchandise items, and currently holds the esteemed title of Chief Greeter at the Disney theme parks.9. Walt Disney World in Florida is a very large amusement park opened in 1971, featuring many of the characters from Disney films.10. Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French writer and a pioneer of the science fiction genre. His most famous books are Journey to the Center of the Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and Around the World in Eighty Days.Verne was the oldest of the family's five children; he spent his early years at home with his parents, on a nearby island in the Loire River. This isolated setting helped to strengthen both his imagination and the bond between him and his younger brother Paul. Verne's fascination with adventure asserted itself at an early age, inspiring him at one point to stow away on a ship bound for the Orient. His voyage was cut short, however, as he found his father waiting for him at the next port.About 1848, in conjunction with Michel Carre, he began writing librettos for operettas. For some years his attentions were divided between the theater and work, but some travelers' stories which he wrote seem to have revealed to him the true direction of his talent: the telling ofdelightfully extravagant voyages and adventures to which cleverly prepared scientific and geographical details lent an air of verisimilitude. When Verne's father discovered that his son was writing rather than studying the law, he promptly withdrew his financial support. Consequently, the writer was forced to support himself with the income from his work. During this period, he met the writers Alexandre Dumas and Victor Hugo, who offered him some advice on his writing. It was during this period that Verne met and married Honorine Morel, a widow with two daughters. At his father's urging, Verne took a job as a stockbroker, though with his wife’s encouragement he continued to write. Verne's situation improved when he met Paul Hetzel, a publisher specializing in books for young people. Hetzel read a draft of Verne's story about the balloon exploration of Africa, which had been rejected by other publishers on the ground that it was "too scientific". With Hetzel's help, Verne rewrote the story and in 1862 it was published as Cinq semaines en ballon (Five Weeks in a Balloon). The story was an enormous success, and was republished in a number of languages. Verne became wealthy and famous. From that point on, and for nearly a quarter of a century, scarcely a year passed in which Hetzel did not publish one or more of his stories.11. The Louvre art museum is the most famous French museum of art located in Paris and has many important paintings, including the Mona Lisa.12. Minnie Mouse is a cartoon character, a female mouse who is the partner of Mickey Mouse.13. Mona Lisa, painted by Leonardo da Vinci, is perhaps the most famous painting in the world, going so far as to be iconic of painting, art, and even visual images in general. No other work of art is so romanticized, celebrated, or reproduced. The work, which was accomplished between 1503 and 1506, measures 77 × 53 cm and is an oil painting on wood. The identity of the lady in the painting is not known for certain, except that she was a wealthy Florentine.Although it is definitely difficult to view the painting critically and ignore all the mythology behind it, it does display a technical mastery that more or less unquestionably seats it amongst Leonardo's masterworks. The compelling nature of the image has been the subject of discussion. In general, it can be stated that the vividness and ambiguity of the facial expression is due to Leonardo's use of sfumato (a term coined by Leonardo da Vinci to refer to a painting technique which overlays translucent layers of color to create perceptions of depth, volume and form), blurring the most expressive portions of the face (the corners of the eyes and mouth) to give the picture greater mystery. Indeed, the eyes appear to follow the viewer around the room, and the enigmatic smile is the picture's most famous feature, giving us the expression, "a Mona Lisa smile".The painting was also one of the first portraits to depict the sitterbefore an imaginary landscape. One interesting feature of the landscape is that it is uneven. The landscape to the left of the figure is noticeably lower than that to the right of her. This has led some critics to suggest that it was added later. The painting has been restored numerous times. Unfortunately, several details have been lost in the process, including Lisa's eyebrows and (possibly) a pearl necklace she was wearing.III. Text Structure AnalysisFor the last unit, we had “from specific details to a general statement”, but for this unit we have the opposite: a general statement supported by details. We find the general statement in Paragraph 13: The Disney organization responds to the question of cultural clash. Right after the statement, the writer offers details to show how the Disney organization responds to the question of cultural clash. This article looks into the cultural problems faced by the Euro Disneyland. Different people and different organizations have different responses to Euro Disney. Would Euro Disney be a pleasant blend of cultures or a painful clashThe article can be broadly divided into three main parts. The first part is about a law case reflecting the cultural clash the Disney organization faces. The second part is a transitional paragraph which links the first part with the third. The third part is about the responses to Euro Disney from the French government, from the French intellectuals and kids and from the Disney organization. The first part consists of seven short paragraphs, from Paragraph 1 to Paragraph 7. This part deals with a lawsuit, which reflects the cultural clash about Euro Disney. Paragraphs 1 to 5 deal with specific details that lead to a lawsuit. Paragraph 6 is a conclusion saying that this is an illustration of the delicate cultural issues the company faces. Paragraph 7 presents the response taken by the company. This part is just like alead-in of the whole article, which reveals that there exists a cultural clash about Euro Disney. The second part is one paragraph only, Paragraph 8. This paragraph links the first part with the third part. Following the cultural clash mentioned in the above 7 paragraphs, the transitional paragraph asks what people think of Euro Disney. The third part is made up of 10 paragraphs, from Paragraph 9 to Paragraph 18. This is the major part of the passage, which deals with the different responses to or concerns about Euro Disney.Paragraph 9 to 11 present the attitude of the French government concerning Euro Disney. Paragraph 9 tells us that the French government has been more concerned about Euro Disney's economic effect rather than the cultural clashes. Paragraphs 10 and 11 are details about what the government has done concerning the project.Paragraph 12 is about the responses from ordinary people. The French intellectuals have been critical about the project whereas the kids will probably never notice anything about the cultural clashes.Paragraphs 13 to 16 focus on the response from the Disney organization. On the one hand it is making efforts to make the park more European, and on the other hand it is trying not to carry the efforts too far. Paragraphs 13 to 14 are about the efforts to make Euro Disneyland primarily a European experience. Paragraphs 15 and 16 are about the Disney organization's efforts to reserve in Euro Disneyland some American characteristics.Paragraphs 17 to 18 are about the major concern of the Disney organization over whether Euro Disney would be a commercial success. The paragraphs present the expectations that Euro Disney would turn out to be a success with its convenient communications.IV. Background Information1. Euro Disneyland:Construction of the Euro Disneyland began in 1988, and the entertainment resort officially opened as Euro Disney on April 12, 1992, but attendance was disappointingly low. The tenth Disney theme park in the world, Walt Disney Studios park opened with the aim of keeping visitors to the resort on property for more days, but the park was criticized for not having enough attractions, many of which were copied from Disney-MGM Studios at Walt Disney World. That same year, Euro Disney S.C.A. and the Walt Disney Company announced another annual profit for Disneyland Resort Paris. But it has incurred a net loss in the following three years, and the park is still about US$2 billion in debt.2. I have a little bit of bad news. There're some thunderstorms at our destination, and they've currently closed the airport. They expect it to reopen in about thirty minutes to an hour. As one might expect, this will result in long delays. As we've come all the way from the West Coast, we don't even have enough fuel to circle until the airport reopens. Therefore, we are going to be diverting to Cleveland, and we should be landing in about thirty minutes. We'll take some fuel there and get you back on your way to our original destination.I ' mterribly sorry for the delay. However, we' 11 get you there just as soon as possible." It was at this moment that you could hear someone running up to the cockpit. Today we'll introduce you to a couple, Joan and Sandy Wilson, who could not afford to take time out to visit their parents one year. They regretted not being able to celebrate Thanksgiving with all their family members. But soon they met other people who also were separated from their families. So the Wilsons began holding a yearly Thanksgiving dinner for what they called their "extended family". This included people in their community. All the guests brought food to share for Thanksgiving dinner. The group has grown over the years. To accommodate all the guests, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson now have to add small tables to their large one in the big dining room. At first, many of their friends brought their babies and young children. It was a time to relax and "count your blessings".Chris: You know, most cultures seem to have some sort of celebration like this--don't the Chinese have a festival of moon cakes to celebrate the harvest month?Susan: Yeah, they do. I believe the round moon cakes also symbolize a family reunion. Chris: Well, today Thanksgiving in the States has developed into a major holiday.Susan: True, it's a very emotional time. Families often travel great distances to be together and share a huge dinner. The Pilgrims' first harsh winter was followed by an abundant harvest. That was good reason to celebrateA: Most cultures have some sort of celebration of the harvest. Some of you are still wondering what to do for your mom. Here's my advice.Look out for anything that she plans to buy, and buy it if you can afford it. For example, a casual dress or formal office wear. Or, it may be a unique hair clip. Find out if she is planning to get a new microwave or a new steam iron, and buy it for her if you can afford it. But don't forget to add a personal touch, and buy perfume or a bouquet of flowers as an add-on to the most practical gifts. You can get some ideas by considering what her likes and dislikes are. If she likes cats, how about giving her a pet or something that has a picture of a cat on it? But make sure she doesn't find out that you're getting her a present. Let her gift be a pleasant surprise.Definitely spend some time with her, especially if you are not living with her. Make her feel special. For example, you can cook a special dish for the day. You can also throw a little party and invite those who are close to her.And of course, if she enjoys outings, take a little trip with her. And if possible with your entire family. She'll love it for sure. After all, she is the one who takes care of all of you. A special trip to the countryside Gould show her how much you care for her. If she is happy, I'm sure you'll feel happy, too. What to Do for Mom Details or ExamplesLook out for anything that she plans to buy. For example, a casual dress or a formal office wear. So people may think more about their spouses and children than about their parents.B: But we should never forget that our parents, especially our mothers, took care of us and brought us up.A: True. Now that Mother's Day is coming, we'd better do something for our morns. I'll give Morn a bouquet of carnations on that morning.B: I'll look out for anything she plans to buy and buy it as a pleasant surprise for her.A: But it's more important to spend time with her. I'm considering taking Mom to see a new movie. I'm sure she'll enjoy it.B: But you can't talk a lot with your mom in the movie theater. Why not take her to a restaurant for a good dinner. There you can talk a lot.A: But I prefer to cook a meal for her by myself. She will be glad about that.B: Perhaps it's also a good idea to take her to a park. That's more romantic.A: My mom likes to be with people. I'll throw a party for her and invite!Jthose who are close to her. B: Good idea. You can take photos of her. You see, in a few years she'll get older and won't look the same anymore.A: I got a part-time job during the winter vacation. I'll give Morn some money. She doesn't really need it, but it shows my love for her and can surely give her a sense of security.B: I'll cheer my Mom up with my academic achievements.A: Well, don't forget Father's Day.B: Of course not.VI. For example, people in Chicago, Illinois, can choose from several special holiday trips on Lake Michigan. These cruises include dinner and dancing to music performed by a band. In San Diego, California, a company offers New Year's Eve parties on the Pacific Ocean. It costs more than 100 dollars for each person. Other Americans have parties at home and invite all their friends. Many of these events are noisy. People shout and sing. They often blow on small noisemakers when the New Year arrives at midnight. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia, to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, which was the second Sunday in May. The next year Mother's Day was again celebrated in Philadelphia. Jarvis and others began a letter-writing campaign to ministers, businessmen, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother s Day. They were successful. In 1914, the American President president proclaimed Mother s Day a national observance that was to be held each year on the second Sunday of May.Task3: St.Valentine ' s StoryScriptLet me introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the third century. At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. He wanted to have a big army, and he expected men to volunteer to join. Seeing many men did not want to leave their wives and families,Claudius had a crazy idea. Thecouple I was marrying escaped in time, but I was caught. I was thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death. Then wonderful things happened. Many young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes up to my window. They wanted me to know that they, too, believed in love. One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Sometimes we would sit and talk for hours. She helped me to keep my spirits up. On the day I was to die, I left my friend a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. I signed it, "Love from your Valentine." I believe that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day.News ReportA Famous Christmas MarketScriptReceiving Christmas presents is always fun, but buying them can be a headache. This is why many Christmas shoppers around Europe are now going to the German city of Nuremberg to visit its famous Christmas market, Christkindlesmarkt..The four-hundred-year-old market is a child's paradise. Its 150 stalls sell all kinds of toys, gifts, and special foods. A staggering two million people visit the market annually. The old city and market add a special feeling to Christmas. As one British tourist, Mivart Thomas, explains," There's something quite, sort of, medieval about the atmosphere here. There are quite a lot of old stalls--traditional-looking stalls--and the cathedral in the background with lights all around; and just a few minutes ago, the brass band was playing...playing Christmas carols. The whole atmosphere is wonderful." The market maintains its Old World atmosphere with regulations saying what can and can't be sold. Not surprisingly, the focus is on the family. The market's tourist officer, Gerd Lauterbauch, points out that the market's name translates as "Christ child's market", and the idea behind it is to offer presents for children on Christmas. Christmas markets are found in many German cities, but Nuremberg's is the most famous. It gives a very different impression from the one tourists expect, considering the city's Nazi past. And as word of the market spreads around Europe, the market is becoming a tourist center.。
