She was just 27 years old.Over time, Kelley has learned to move her fingers enough to use a computer and to get around daily with the help of a wheelchair. Although that progress is not enough to allow her to continue her previous career, other opportunities have opened up for her.Kelley said, "The accident changed my outlook on life, and I immediately looked to education since I had no degree." Most traditional programs did not allow her to balance her education with a growing family. Then, Kelley found Penn State Distance Education.Distance Education is hard work, but my children make it all worthwhile. Even if for some reason I can't work after obtaining my degree, I will be an educated person, setting a good example for my children and having gained the knowledge that canhelp them in their future efforts. Distance Education has changed my life from tragedy to triumph," she said. Distance Education affords me an opportunity to pursue my own goals and personal work. My education is separate from my " issues regarding my disability or my family life and caring for my children."Commenting on McKee's experience, Gary E. Miller, vice president for Distance Education and director of the World Campus, noted, "Kelley's story is a wonderful reminder about the impact of Distance Education on the lives of our students who cannot meet their needs through traditional on-campus programs."Jane Ireland, academic advisor for Distance Education and the World Campus, added: "Kelley reminds us of the mission we have in Distance Education--to bring a quality education and experience to students regardless of their geographic vocation or life circumstances. Kelley is a wonderful example for us of the great effect we have on the lives of a great many students who truly need access to education."Kelley is a successful student, carrying credits each semester. She plans to complete her bachelor's degree in letters, arts, and sciences, then continue on to obtain an online master's degree. After graduation, McKee hopes to work with injured or disabled individuals, possibly in counseling in a rehabilitation setting. Jane Ireland has no doubt Kelley will achieve her goals.Kelley is thankful to her outstanding instructors and a number of student support services, including financial aid, disability services and vocational rehabilitation. Many of these faculty and staff, however, say that it is Kelley McKee who has been outstanding.Susan Waitkus, instructor in English at Penn State's DuBois Campus, stated, Kelley inspires not only other students, but also faculty fortunate enough to know her. Our reactions help to determine whether our child will repeat his behavior or whether he will do something different. This statement is a very important part of a principle of behavioral psychology. The principle states that a behavior is influenced or affected by how the environment ---- people, places and things ---- immediately responds to the behavior. Perhaps without realizing it, you have used this principle many times. On the occasion when you told your child what a good boy he was after he cleaned up his room, you used the principle. When you sent your child to his room for fighting with his brother, you used the principle. When I gave Kim a cookie after she started to cry, I used the principle. In each of these examples, a particular behavior occurred first ---- cleaning up a room, fighting, and crying. In addition, there was a reaction to eachbehavior ---- the child was praised, sent to his room, or given a cookie. By these actions, we have influenced the previous behaviors and have helped to determine whether those behaviors will occur again in the future.(10分)1、1.What is the lecture mainly about?(单选题)A、Children and environmental protection.B、Children’s behavior and fighting.C、Children’s behavior and our response.D、Children and principles.2、2.On what kind of principle is the lecture based?(单选题)A、A principle in chemistry.B、A principle in behavioral psychology.C、A principle in physics.D、A principle in geology.3、3.Who do you think the audience at this lecture might be?(单选题)A、T eachersB、DoctorsC、Social workers.D、Parents4、4.According to the lecture, why was the child sent to his room?(单选题)A、As a kind of punishment.B、As a kind of reward.C、As an experiment on the principle.D、As an example of the principle.5、5.What does the lecturer mean by "environment"?(单选题)A、Rooms, cookies and toys.B、Water, air and forest.C、People, places and things.D、Family, school and friends.2、The fridge is considered a necessity. It has been so since the 1960s when packaged food first appeared with the label: “store inthe refrigerator”.In my fridgeless Fifties childhood, I was fed well and healthily. The milkman came daily, the grocer, the butcher, the baker, and theice-cream man delivered two or three times a week. The Sunday meat would last until Wednesday and surplus(剩余的) bread and milk became all kinds of cakes. Nothing was wasted, and we were never troubled by rotten food. Thirty years on, food deliveries have ceased; fresh vegetables are almost unobtainable in the country. The invention of the fridge contributed comparatively little to the art of food preservation. A vast way of well-tried techniques already existed ? natural cooling, drying, smoking, salting, sugaring, bottling ...What refrigeration did promote was marketing ? marketing hardware and electricity, marketing soft drinks, marketing dead bodies of animals around the globe in search of a good price.Consequently, most of the world’s fridges are to be found, not inthe tropics where they might prove useful, but in the wealthy countries with mild temperatures where they are climatically almost unnecessary. Every winter, millions of fridges hum away(不断地嗡嗡作响) continuously, and at vast expense, busily maintainanartificially-cooled space inside and artificially-heated house ?while outside, nature provides the desired temperature free of charge. The fridge’s e ffect upon the environment has been evident, while its contribution to human happiness has been insignificant. If you don’t believe me, try it yourself, invest in a food cabinet (橱柜)and turn off your fridge next winter. You may miss the hamburgers, but at least you’ll get rid of that terrible hum.(10分)1、1.The statement “In my fridgeless Fifties childhood, I was fedwell and healthily.” (Para.2) suggest that _______.(单选题)A、the author was well-fed and healthy even without a fridge inhis fiftiesB、the author was not accustomed to using fridges even in hisfiftiesC、there was no fridge in the author’s home in the 1950sD、the fridge was in its early stage of development in the 1950s2、2.Why does the author say that nothing was wasted before the invention of fridges?(单选题)A、People would not buy more food than was necessary.B、Food was delivered to people two or three times a week.C、Food was sold fresh and did not get rotten easily.D、People had effective ways to preserve their food.3、3.Who benefited the least from fridges according to theauthor?(单选题)A、InventorsB、ConsumersC、ManufacturersD、Traveling salesmen(巡回推销员)4、4.Which of the following phrases in Para.5 indicates the fridge’s negative effect on the environment?(单选题)A、“Hum away continuously”.B、“Climatically almost unnecessary”.C、“Artificially-cooled space”.D、“With mild temperatures”.5、5.What is the author’s overall attitude toward fridges?(单选题)A、NeutralB、CriticalC、ObjectiveD、Compromising完形填空题1、Scientists have studied consumer behavior recently and found 21 the look of the package has a great effect 22 the"quality" of theproduct and on how well it 23 , because "Consumers generallycannot 24 between a product and its package. Many products are packages and many packages are products," as Louis Cheskin, the first social scientist studying consumers’ feeling for packaging, noticed.Colors are one of the best tools in packaging. Studies of eyemovement have shown that colors draw human 25 quickly. Take V8 for example. For many years, the bright red color of tomatoes and carrots on the thin bottle makes you feel that it is very good for your body. And the word"green" today can keep food prices26 .27 are another attraction. Circles often suggest happiness and peacefulness, because these shapes are 28 to both the eye and the heart. Xie Wenping, 32, used to follow his grandfather who made elephant-foot drums for a living to learn how to make a drum. “I had decided to make more and better drums when I grew up,” Xie said. The elephant-foot drum is the most typical musical instrument of the Dai ethnic group. The drum-making skill was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in 2011.Elephant-foot drums carry great cultural importance. However, making an elephant-foot drum is no easy task. “Making an elephant-foot drum takes about 30 steps and one month,” Xie explained. After picking the wood, one needs to carve (雕刻) the wood into an elephant-leg-like shape and hollow out the inside so that the drum can make a sound. The drum surface is made of cowhide (牛皮), which needs to go through several steps such as leather selection (皮料选择),cleaning, air drying and cutting. Then comes the painting. The drum is painted with patterns showing ethnic elements and covered with a protective topcoat (防护面漆). The finishing steps include tuning (调音), and polishing the fur. “A good elephant-foot drum should have a thick and loud sound when beaten,” Xie said. The repetition of the work might not be so exciting, but whenever Xie sees his grandfather’s smile while making the drum, he feels encouraged again. “Over the years, the number of craftspeople (工匠) skilled in making elephant-foot drums has gone down,” Xie said. “I feel like it’s my responsibility to carry it on.”Xie has innovated (创新) the form of the drum. To make it easier for the elephant-foot drum to spread to places outside Y unnan, Xie came up with the idea of making a mini kind of the drum and designed key chains shaped like the elephant-foot drum.9.According to Xie, the process of making an elephant-foot drum is ________.A.easy B.challenging C.boring D.exciting 10.From the passage, we can know that ________.A.many young craftsmen are learning the drum-making skills nowB.Xie had decided to make more and better drums when he was 32C.the drum has been given new life thanks to Xie’s creative designD.before painting, Xie needs to tune and polish the fur to make the drum11.What does the word “hollow” mean in the fourth paragraph?A.挖空B.填满C.停止D.切断12.What’s the best title of the passage?A.The Hard Time for the Drum B.Xie’s Innovation of the DrumC.The Story Between Xie and the Drum D.The Responsibility of XieWith a habit of drinking coffee on weekends while doing schoolwork, Wu Zibo, a 17-year-old student from Beijing No. 4 High School, wanted to order a cup of Moutai-flavored latte (茅台味拿铁). “I wonder how my father’s favorite Chinese liquor (白酒) would taste with my favorite coffee.” Wu said.Moutai, known as the national liquor brand of China, made a coffee called “Jiangxiang Latte” with Luckin (瑞幸) Coffee. It is put into a bag with a Moutai picture and has less than 0.5percent of 53 degrees Moutai in a cup. The two companies sold 5.42 million cups and earned 100 million yuan just on the first day after it came out, China Daily reported.Independent food industry researcher Zhu Danpeng said the partnership was good for both brands. “Moutai and Luckin are the leading companies in the liquor and coffee field,” Zhu said. “On the one hand, Moutai becomes younger through making things together with Luckin. On the other hand, for Luckin, it has collected more older customers and become more popular.”Many brands choose to have a partnership and make products together. However, wrong partnerships may have bad influence on the brands. For example, the coffee brand Manner and the brand Louis Vuitton (LV) asked customers to buy two books at the price of 580 yuan so that they can get a free cloth LV bag. People doubted whether the books and the bag were worth the price.“The key to having a partnership is about how good the products are. 2021年英语科组第二次作业常规检查总结

2021年英语科组第二次作业常规检查总结

Happiness does not happen every day. If you miss it, you will have to wait a long time.

A24 years ago Jim Ritter was a typical, active high school student. At age sixteen his life changed forever, when Jim was working at his father's logging business in the small town of Montesano, Washington. One Friday, his dad woke him at 4:30 am to work. Having finished the morning work, Jim climbed into the grapple(吊车)for an after-lunch nap. It was then that Jim's father started the engines, not realizing that his son lay inside, asleep."Oh my God!" Jim's father cried out. "I broke his neck!"Immediately, Jim's dad called for help on the C.B radio. A logging company helicopter heard the call for help and picked Jim up, taking him to the hospital in Olympia, sixty-five miles away. It was truly a miracle! His father's logging business was in the middle of nowhere, and helicopters hardly ever flew around there. After surgery, Jim was left paralyzed (瘫痪的)from the neckdown. Nine weeks later, he was moved to an orthopedic(矫形的)hospital in Seattle where he became an inspiration to the nurses and other patients with hisoptimism and good sense of humor. One day a volunteer came by Jim's room and asked if he would like to try painting pictures. "I can't." Jim told her. "I'm paralyzed." However, having been shown avideo in which a paralyzed girl was drawing by holding a pen between her teeth, Jim decided to give it a try: If that girl could do it, so could he!It was awkward and difficult at first. Jim practiced day after day, and gradually his drawings turned from amateur sketches into beautiful scenes. Before the accident. Jim had never drawn.Today, Jim lets nothing stand in his way. He is able to support himself by holding art shows throughout the country. How easy it is to justify giving up on our dreams with a ready excuse. "It's too difficult." "I'm not that smart." "I don't have time." Jim Ritter is a living proof that no excuise is good enough.(1) What do we know about Jim on that particular Friday when he was sixteen?A. He overslept.B. He got crushed.C. He operated the machine wrongly.D. He worked the whole day.(2) What do the underlined words "in the middle of nowhere"probably mean?A. Close to shut-downB. Far away from the airport.C. In a remote place.D. In the process of operation.(3) What eventually made Jim turn to painting in the hospital?A. His previous experience in art.B. The volunteer's encouragement.C. A paralyzed girl's amazing worksD. The drawing scene of a paralyzed girl.(4) What's the passage mainly about?A. A man's recovery from an accidentB. A man's rising from hardship.C. People's care for the disabledD. A paralyzed girl's inspiring story.BTo figure out if we can die of boredom, we first have to understand what boredom is. For help, I called James Danckert, a psychologist who studies boredom at theUniversity of Waterloo in Canada. "A lot of people think about being bored as being lazy. And it's absolutely not that," he says. "Bored people want to be engaged withtheir world, eager to do something satisfying and exciting. But any attempt to do so is failing."That means boredom is usually very upsetting. And it can have physical consequences. In one of his experiments, Danckert made people extremely bored byshowing them a video of two people hanging clothes to dry. He found that when people got bored, their hearts beat faster andtheir levels of a hormone called cortisol(皮质醇) went up, compared to when they watched another video that made them sad. These physical changes were signs that boredom was stressing them out. "It's not like having a full-on panic attack." Danckert says. But it's certainly enough to make boredom unpleasant.Let's come back to if boredom can kill you. Back in the 1980s, scientists asked people who worked for the British government a whole bunch of questions, including how bored they felt in their daily lives. The study tracked the participants over time. When any one of them died, the survey recorded the cause of death. In2010, two researchers matched up these causes of death with the participants' level of boredom. It turned out that people who said they were more bored were also more likely to have died of heart disease. "We know that prolonged exposure to stress is bad for your health, Danckert says. A single boring day can't kill you. But if you're always bored, the stress could add up into something dangerous."Oh no," you might be thinking. "School is boring, my friends are boring, everything is boring! What's going to happen to me?" Don't worry, Danckert says: "As you getolder, you get less bored." mainly because you gain more independence and have to get busy to achieve your long-term goals. And trust me: that's anything but boring.(1) According to James Danckert, people feel bored because_____.A. they are too lazy to do anythingB. they can't gain excitement in lifeC. they are too frightened to have a tryD. they can't fully understand boredom(2) What can we learn from paragraph 2?A. Doing housework will make people bored.B. People's heart rate increases with boredom.C. Physical changes can lead to extreme boredom.D. Watching something sad is a boring experience.(3) What does the underlined word "prolonged" in paragraph 3 mean?A. Continued.B.Repeated.C. Sudden.D. Active.(4) What does Danckert recommend to save people from boredom?A. Depending on friends.B. Setting long-term goals.C. Keeping yourself occupiedD. Trusting people around you.CThere is an "environmental silver lining" as a result of the corona virus (冠状病毒)carbon emissions have been reduced by more than 4%, many wildlife markets around the world have been closed and air quality in some places has slightly improved, Dave Ford, founder of the environmental literacy organization Soul Buffalo, says. However, because of an increase in pandemic-related, non-recyclable materials such as take-out plastic containers and masks, 30% more waste has entered ouroceans, he notes. "There're 129 billion facemasks being made every month- enough that you could cover the entire country of Switzerland with facemasks at the end of this year if trends continue," he says. "And a lot of these masks are ending up in the water." The masks look like jellyfish- in other words, food to turtles andother wildlife creatures, thus, attractive to those animals and then endangering them, he says.Very little of the plastic we use is actually recyclable. Sharon Lerner of The Intercept told Here & Now last year that "the vast majority of plastic that has ever beenproduced--79%- -has actually ended up in landfills or burned , but not remade into new products." Even if the plastics we have can be reused, Ford says recycling programs across the globe are facing severe budget cuts."We're starting to see recycling programs stopped, waste picking communities operating at 50% or actually shutting down. They are the last line of defense betweenplastic and the environment." he says.Last year, Unilever planned to cut its use of non-recycled plastics in half by 2025. In an interview with Here & Now, Richard Slater, Unilever's chief research and development officer, drew on the industry argument that plastic packaging is lighter, which means less shipping and therefore fewer dangerous emissions that cause climate change.Yes, plastics are lightweight and can cut down on fuel spending. But on the other hand, plastic waste is being found in every aspect of life- even in the deepest ocean.(1) What does "environmental silver lining" in Paragraph 1 refer to?A. An environmental organization.B. The closure of some wildlife markets.C. Benefits on environment from the corona virus.D. The decrease of carbon dioxide emissions.(2) Why are facemasks attractive to some sea creatures?A. There is a continuous shortage of food in the ocean.B. They contain certain unique chemicals.C. Many sea creatures like to chase plastic by nature.D. They look like the sea creatures' food.(3) What can we learn about the plastic waste?A. The majority of it is buried or burned.B. Most of it is recycled into new products.C. 129 billion facemasks end up in the ocean.D. There is enough budget for plastic recycling.(4) Which of the following might be the best title for the text?A. Plastic can cut down fuel spendingB. The corona virus has caused more ocean plasticC. Recycling programs are shutting downD. Solutions to ocean plastic pollution are being explored七选五The Spotlight EffectHave you ever felt as if the entire world was watching while you made a mistake?
