The thing I hated most was that they were always afraid that I was not as cautious as they were, and that I could not exercise the same good judgment as they did, As a matter of fact, children follow advice, but they follow examples even better. Trust and encouragement will have a better effect on them than endless advice and severe punishment.V. Writing PracticeA. Writing a reading note...Parents usually think that it is their duty to tell children what they should do and what they shouldn’t do to be good children. Some parents even exact severe punishment for such bad habits as lying and stealing to make sure that their children behave properly, Unfortunately, many parents fail to realize that children will follow examples rather than advice, and they themselves lie to each other or lift things from their offices when they feel the occasion warrants it. In some cases, two generations can share a house, but their ways of thinking and behaving are worlds apart. One of the basic reasons for this clash is that the older generation believe that it is they who have built up this present world all their 1ives and they are conditioned to identify the world as belonging to them; whereas the rising generation, free from the burden of the past, appreciate fresh thinking and unstrained behaviour, feeling sure that they have the right to create a new world and confident that they can make it. One thing is for sure, though, --- communication and cooperation between the two generations will make the world a better place for everybody.。

Translation BAn office decorated with much taste is bound to create a favourable impression on people. In many cases, people spend a great deal of money decorating their offices, but the result can be unsatisfactory. As a matter of fact, the highest-priced or fanciest is not necessarily the best for your office. If your taste in room decoration is rather poor, I recommend that you seek the advice of a good decorator. This is especially important for those who receive their guests or do business with their customers in their offices on a daily basis.。

Many people around the world claim they have. What did they see? Some people have said they saw a spinning1silver disc in the sky and a pointed-eared cat-eyed alien. Others claim seeing a one-eyed, colossal creature with an elongated2 head walking out of an oval-shaped disk. Still others report seeing a midget-sized3; green man with velvet skin floating around an orb4of bright white light. One person even reported having a conversation with a fairy-like alien. The alien kept repeating, "Don't be alarmed. Don't panic. You look as strange to me as I do to you. Your head is so tiny, your body so bulky. Your legs so long and thin and they look so weak, your skin so pink5and hairy and you have bulging eyes6."One UFO reportedly landed in American Samoa7, near a tiny fishing village tucked8 between the blue ocean and steep cliffs. The village natives believe the area where it landed is a holy place and that the alien visitors must have known this. Magical red stones are found there, and they claim that these stones contain spiritual energies9which have aided mental and physical healing for generations. The natives long ago built a huge stone circle at the site and a Snake Mound, a snake-like sculpture five feet high and fifty feet wide. The form begins with an open mouth and, after going through seven major curves10, ends 1,300 feet later with a tightly coiled tail. The UFO landed, they said, in front of the open mouth of the snake-like sculpture. Are these people who are reporting UFO and alien sightings having visions11? Is this a case of mass hysteria12or delusion13? Or have they in fact seen outer space beings and alien spacecraft? Some believe they are real and come not from other worlds in our universe but from unseen, other dimensions of reality14. Science cannot explain it. Indeed, science is openly critical and skeptical of such sightings15. Whatever the verdict16or opinion of science, the sightings continue, and the mystery remains.1. The park is 4 km (2.5 mi long from Central Park South (59th Street to Central Park North (110th Street and 0.8 km (0.5 mi wide from Central Park West (Eighth Avenue to Fifth Avenue. Nearl y the entire 340-hectare (840-acre area was acquired in the 1850s and 1860s for less than $7 million. Central Park History There are three elements in the architecture of Central Park. The Park was pressed for primarily by wealthy merchants and landowners. In the first decade after its completion, it was clearly the playground of the wealthy. It was located too far uptown to be within walking distance for the city’s working class population. • English Romanticism is characterized by the picturesque ideal to blend with the natural environment. Central Park’s founding commissioners Olmsted and Calvert Vaux were influenced by this tradition. Their ideal was to allow New Yorkers to experience a day in the pastoral (田园生活的 country without leaving the island city. • Another style is Classicism characterized by formal symmetry and the use of straight lines, evident in the south end of the Park. 1• Until the late 19th century, workers comprised but a fraction of the visitors to the Park when they launched a successf ul campaign to have concerts held on Sundays. • Saturday afternoon concerts were for middle-class audiences, for the six-day working week precluded (预先排除attendance by the working class. • Indeed the concept of creating the park was originally conceived by wealthy New Yorkers who admired the public grounds of London and Paris. However, with the maturing of the nation and the rise of its power, the pride of Americanism gradually took the upper hand. The author therefore describes the Park proudly as efficient, purposeful and distinctive—neither romantic nor classical, and neither English nor French, but distinctively American. If your taste in room decoration is rather poor, I recommend that you seek the advice of a good decorator.
