After reading "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott, Iwas deeply moved by the story and the characters. The book follows the lives of the four March sisters – Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy – as they navigate the challenges of growing up, finding love, and discovering their own paths in life. The novel is a timeless classic that has captured thehearts of readers for generations, and it's easy to see why.One of the things that struck me most about "Little Women" is the strong sense of family and sisterhood that runs through the entire book. The bond between the March sisters is unbreakable, and they support and love eachother through all of life's ups and downs. As someone with sisters of my own, I found this aspect of the story particularly touching. It reminded me of the special connection that siblings share, and the importance ofhaving a strong support system in times of need.Another theme that resonated with me is the idea ofpursuing one's dreams and passions, even in the face of adversity. Each of the March sisters has her own unique aspirations and talents, and the book follows their journeys as they strive to achieve their goals. Jo, in particular, dreams of becoming a writer, and her determination and perseverance in the face of rejection and criticism is truly inspiring. Her story serves as a powerful reminder that it's important to follow our hearts and never give up on our dreams, no matter how difficult the path may be.The novel also delves into the complexities of love and relationships, as the sisters experience the joys and heartaches of romance. From Meg's sweet and simple courtship with John Brooke to Jo's tumultuous relationship with Laurie, the book explores the different forms that love can take and the ways in which it can shape our lives. It's a poignant and heartfelt portrayal of the highs and lows of love, and it left me reflecting on my own experiences with relationships and the lessons I've learned along the way. Finally, "Little Women" is a story of growth and self-discovery, as the March sisters come of age and learn valuable lessons about themselves and the world around them. Each sister undergoes her own personal transformation, and their journeys are filled with moments of joy, sorrow, and growth. As I followed their individual paths, I couldn't help but think about my own journey and the ways in whichI've changed and evolved over the years. In conclusion, "Little Women" is a beautiful and timeless novel that has left a lasting impression on me.Its themes of family, sisterhood, perseverance, love, and personal growth are universal and deeply resonant, and I believe that the lessons and insights it offers will continue to inspire and uplift readers for years to come. Louisa May Alcott's masterful storytelling and richly drawn characters have earned "Little Women" its well-deserved status as a beloved classic, and I feel privileged to have experienced the magic of this extraordinary book.。

嘉莉妹妹英文读后感《Sister Carrie》 is a novel that has left a deep impression on me It tells the story of a young girl named Carrie who leaves her small hometown for the big city of Chicago in pursuit of a better lifeCarrie, an innocent and naive country girl, arrives in Chicago with big dreams and hopes However, she soon realizes that the reality of city life is far from what she imagined She faces poverty, hardship, and the harshness of a society that values money and status above all elseOne of the most striking aspects of the novel is the portrayal of Carrie's character development At the beginning, she is easily influenced by the materialistic desires around her She is constantly seeking a more comfortable and luxurious life, often at the expense of her own moral and ethical principles This transformation shows the corrupting influence of the urban environment and the power of materialism to change a personThe author, Theodore Dreiser, does an excellent job of depicting the social backdrop of the time The gap between the rich and the poor is stark, and the struggle for survival is intense The working conditions are poor, and opportunities for advancement are limited for those without connections or wealth This creates a sense of hopelessness and frustration among many characters, including CarrieAnother interesting aspect is the role of love and relationships in Carrie's life Her relationships with men are often based on convenience or material gain rather than true love This reflects the superficiality and opportunismthat can exist in human interactions, especially in a society driven by material pursuitsThroughout the story, Carrie's journey is filled with ups and downs She experiences moments of success and moments of despair Her rise to fame and fortune as an actress seems to offer her the happiness she has always desired, but in the end, she realizes that true fulfillment lies beyond material possessions and external validationThe novel also raises important questions about the nature of success and happiness Does success mean having wealth and fame? Or is it something more profound and meaningful? Carrie's constant search for something more suggests that material possessions alone cannot bring true contentmentIn conclusion, "Sister Carrie" is not only a story about an individual's pursuit of the American Dream but also a critical examination of society and human nature It makes us think about the values we hold dear and the price we are willing to pay to achieve our goals The book serves as a reminder that while material success may bring temporary pleasure, it is often the intangible things like love, integrity, and a sense of purpose that give true meaning to our livesThe story of Carrie is a cautionary tale that warns us against the dangers of being consumed by materialism and losing sight of our true selves in the process It encourages us to look beyond the surface and strive for a more authentic and fulfilling existenceReading this novel has made me reflect on my own values and aspirations It has made me question what truly matters in life and hasreminded me to stay true to myself in a world that often tempts us with false promises of happiness and successOverall, "Sister Carrie" is a powerful and thoughtprovoking novel that has much to offer readers It is a timeless work that remains relevant even in today's society, where the pursuit of material wealth and social status often takes precedence over more important aspects of life。

A BRIEF ANALYSIS OF SISITER CARRIE《嘉莉妹妹》解读June, 2007Xiaogan UniversityAbstractSister Carrie tells the story of a small country girl Carrie who moves to Chicago to realize her “American Dream”and eventually becomes a Broadway star in New York. Despite living a luxurious life, she is lost in sprit. Reading the novel, we may easily notice Carrie’different needs and desires arising gradually and also the betrayal of traditional moral code in the process of pursuing material gain. The paper analyzes the reasons why Carrie has various needs at different stages of life, mainly based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. One is Carrie’s inner desires; the other is the outside force, including temptations of environment, cities, etc. The interaction between them makes Carrie lose herself eventually. It seems to tell people that in modern society material supplies more and more abundantly, but we should never pursue it blindly and much importance should be attached to happiness and stability created by spirit. It is essential to ponder the significance and the value of life.

”[2]j ust as Simone de Beauvoir puts it,“One"is not born but rather becomes,a woman. It is civilization as a whole that produces this creature.Only the intervention of someone else can establish an individual as an other.”[3]在文学方面,女性主义者和作家挖掘大量被埋没的妇女作家和作品,重现妇女作品的连续性、一致性和连贯性,并挑战传统的经典文学书目,将妇女作品置于经典文学之列。

He boasts readers all over the world. In the meantime, Dreiser is widely discussed in critical filed. His first novel, Sister Carrie is his first novel and typical representative of naturalism and has remained a hot topic in American literature.By now, this novel has been researched from various perspectives, but few from feministic aspects systematically. With American society at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, the novel witnesses great transformation of that era. The booming industrialization changes people’s life style as well as their way of thinking and ideology, especially female’s thoughts. Sister Carrie juxtaposes rise to become a celebrity of a country girl and degradation of an affluent manager to a homeless beggar and finally resorts to suicidal. However, popularized commercialism and patriarchal thoughts imposes negative influence on woman, despite of which, Carrie achieves independence from family and lover and realizes talent and beauty awareness. The thesis is composed of two chapters.Chapter one introduces the emergence of new woman in the deeply-rooted patriarchal society, analyzes Carrie’s independence from family and lovers and explains the objective reason for her dependence- consumerist society.Chapter two discusses three kinds of traditional woman and their fate pattern and concentrates on Carrie’s gradual achievement of beauty awareness and talent awareness and her attitude to reality from passiveness to activeness. The significance of the study includes two aspects. Firstly, through the analysis, the researcher wants readers to be more familiar with plot and characters of this novel, not merely regards it as a naturalistic work. Secondly, the research tries to employ concrete supporting theories to analyzeKey words independence self-consciousness freedom摘要西奥多.

Reflection on Little WomenLittle Women is a classic novel written by Louisa May Alcott, which tells the story of the four March sisters –Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy – as they grow up and navigate the challenges of life during the Civil War era. The novel has been cherished by readers for generations, and it continues to resonate with audiences today. After reading the novel, I have been deeply moved by the characters and their experiences, and I would like to share my reflections on Little Women. One of the most striking aspects of Little Women is the strong sense of sisterhood that permeates the story. The bond between the March sisters is unbreakable, and their love and support for each other is truly heartwarming. As the sisters face various trials and tribulations, they always come together to provide comfort and encouragement for one another. This portrayal of sisterhood is bothinspiring and aspirational, and it serves as a reminder of the importance of family and the power of love and unity.Another theme that resonated with me is the idea of female empowerment and independence. Each of the March sisters has her own unique ambitions and dreams, and the novel follows their individual journeys as they strive to achieve their goals. Jo, in particular, stands out as a strong-willed and independent young woman who is determined to pursue her passion for writing, despite the societal expectations placed upon her. Through Jo's character,Alcott challenges traditional gender roles and advocatesfor women's rights and autonomy. This message of empowerment is timeless and continues to be relevant in today's world. In addition to its themes of sisterhood and female empowerment, Little Women also offers valuable lessons about resilience and perseverance. The March sisters face numerous hardships throughout the novel, including the illness and eventual death of their beloved sister, Beth. Despite these challenges, the sisters demonstrateincredible strength and resilience as they navigate their grief and continue to move forward with their lives. Their ability to overcome adversity serves as a powerful example of the human spirit's capacity for resilience and hope.Furthermore, the novel's exploration of love and relationships is both poignant and thought-provoking. From the sisters' close bond with their mother, Marmee, to their romantic entanglements with various suitors, Little Women delves into the complexities of love and the different forms it can take. The novel presents a nuanced portrayal of love, encompassing both the joys and the sorrows that come with it. Through the March sisters' experiences,Alcott offers insight into the nature of love and the ways in which it shapes our lives.Overall, Little Women is a timeless and deeply moving novel that continues to captivate readers with its rich themes and compelling characters. The strong sense of sisterhood, the message of female empowerment, the lessons of resilience, and the exploration of love all contribute to the novel's enduring appeal. As I reflect on the storyof the March sisters, I am reminded of the enduring power of love, the importance of family and friendship, and the strength that lies within each of us. Little Women is a true literary masterpiece, and its impact will continue to be felt for generations to come.。

Vivid Heroine——On Sister CarrieCarrie was such an ordinary rural girl at the beginning of the story. Sitting on the seat of a bus, she couldn’t help feeling exciting at the sight of the metropolis’spectacle. She was impressed deeply by large crowd on the avenue, the spacious square or tall buildings.Far more different from other heroines, Carrie was not a plain pure angel like Snow-white, nor was she brave enough to be a heroine of revolutionist or even a reformer, nor was she so clever as to be a successful career woman who start from scratch. What attracted her most, after her entering this huge metropolis was the incredible fineries, fashion shoes, smart handbags displaying in the shop windows, the jewellerys shining brightly behind the glass. She dreamed that one day, she could wear all of these, jogging gracefully into the most luxurious hotel with focused sights of admiration. And this was not merely a dream. Because she had large eyes which can earn others’ sympathy, even love. She had wonderful figure which can win others’ hearts. However, anything she got, anywhere she reached, had not come from her ambition. Things happened, and then she accepted. That’s what she had just done — just to accept willingly from the bottom of her heart. She was not at all an evil woman who would give anything for the fortune or fame. However, she would give uo something for a better life when her instinct defeated her intellect. That was Carrie, a girl had her own desire, a human being just like many others in the realistic world. There’s one sentence written in chapter VIII:” When this jangle of free-will instinct shall have been adjusted, when perfect understanding has given the former the power to replace the latter entirely, man will no longer vary.”However, how many people can go that further. And I want to quote another sentence to wind up my essay:“In Carrie — as in how many of our wordings do they not? — instinct and reason, desire and understanding, were at war for the mastery.”。
The novel depicts the rural girl Carrie came to Chicago to find the well-being of cities, in order to escape poverty, selling their virginity, met with a salesman and hotel manager of cohabitation, and then with the beautiful voice to become singers and story. In desperation, she has done a salesman Drouet's mistress, and later as a result of a greater desire to do the hotel manager Hurstwood mistress. After the elopement with Hurstwood, in New York as a result of chance, she became a star at the actor, got the upper reaches of society and realize her fantasy. However, the so-called "upper-class social life," gave her anything at all? She felt that life is empty and can not find the true meaning of life, in the loneliness and desolation, she dreams of sitting in a rocking chair in a TV drama is not the end of happiness. Thus in life there is ever the intellectual and the emotional nature -- the mind that reasons, and the mind that feels. Of one come the men of action -- generals and statesmen; of the other, the poets and dreamers -- artists all.As harps in the wind, the latter respond to every breath of fancy, voicing in their moods all the ebb and flow of the ideal.Man has not yet comprehended the dreamer any more than he has the ideal. For him the laws and morals of the world are unduly severe. Ever hearkening to the sound of beauty, straining for the flash of its distant wings, he watches to follow, wearying his feet in travelling. So watched Carrie, so followed, rocking and singing. And it must be remembered that reason had little part in this. Chicago dawning, she saw the city offering more of loveliness than she had ever known, and instinctively, by force of her moods alone, clung to it. In fine raiment and elegant surroundings, men seemed to be contented. Hence, she drew near these things. Chicago, New York; Drouet, Hurstwood; the world of fashion and the world of stage -- these were but incidents. Not them, but that which they represented, she longed for. Time proved the representation false.Oh, the tangle of human life! How dimly as yet we see. Here was Carrie, in the beginning poor, unsophisticated, emotional; responding with desire to everything most lovely in life, yet finding herself turned as by a wall. Laws to say: \"Be allured, if you will, by everything lovely, but draw not nigh unless by righteousness.\" Convention to say: \"You shall not better your situation save by honest labour.\" If honest labour be unremunerative and difficult to endure; if it be the long, long road which never reaches beauty, but wearies the feet and the heart; if the drag to follow beauty be such that one abandons the admired way, taking rather the despised path leading to her dreams quickly, who shallcast the first stone? Not evil, but longing for that which is better, more often directs the steps of the erring. Not evil, but goodness more often allures the feeling mind unused to reason.

enlightening people ’s value and women ’s social posi-tion.In Sister Carrie ,there are still a lot to be further explored in a deep sense and wide perspective.[Key words ]Sister Carrie ;Chinese Perspective ;ethical evaluation[中图分类号]I106.4[文献标识码]A [文章编号]1672-8610(2011)02-0059-02I.IntroductionSister Carrie tells us how Carrie ,a poor country girl ,be-comes a famous star in Broadway. In the novel ,Dreiser de-scribes the living conditions and emotional changes of Carrie very vividly.Since its publication ,this novel has been attracting criti-cal attentions from America and abroad and many studies have been done on this novel from different perspectives.some schol-ars study it from the materialistic angle and discuss determinism and social Darwinism displayed in it.Moreover ,critics have been extending unanimous condemnation to Carrie and labeled her as a fallen woman.Besides ,others discuss the theme of Car-ries pursuit of self -realization.Ⅱ.American Dream and Morality in Sister CarrieAmerican Dream has been one of the most ideal dreams throughout the world. It originated from the Puritan belief of building a city upon a hill.Later on ,it developed into a kind of secular idea :everyone can succeed from rags to riches with his /her own intelligence and hard work.In American history ,it has attracted millions of people to seek their dreams from all over the world ,and really a lot of dreams have come true. However ,when American history entered the transitional period ,which was around the year 1900,the means of realizing American Dreamdeviated from its original track ,so there appeared an abnormal phenomenon to make your ideal dream come true ,you have to do something immoral .The paper ,based on ethical literary criti-cism ,analyzes some main details concerning the heroine ’s (Sister Carrie ’s )crucial behavior and critical thinking ,points out that the moral tendency of Sister Carrie is influenced greatly by the social environment and concludes that the novel Sister Carrie is meaningful and naturalistic in reflecting the social prob-lems of that very period (Huang Kaihong ).In Sister Carrie ,the author shows the process of the erosion of American Dream ,in the novel ,although the protagonist sister Carrie attained some achievements she paid the heavy moral price. Her final happiness was far away from her original ideal expectation.Traditionally ,Americans have sought to realise the American dream of success ,fame and wealth through thrift and hard work. However ,the industrialisation of the 19th and 20th centuries began to erode the dream ,replacing it with a philoso-phy of “get rich quick ”.Ⅲ.Crisis of Ecological EthicsProfessor Zhu Zhenwu from ShangHai University analyze Sister Carrie from the perspective of ecological ethics.Cities and industrial city civilization dominated by men ,deterioration of natural environment worship of money and commodity and—95—语文学刊·外语教育教学2011年第2期oppression of women go hand in glove. The city environment which is permeated with an atmosphere of ceaseless commercial-ization,spiritual vacuum and belief crisis, reduced Sister Carrie from an innocent city immigrant to a commodity. In today’s world that is still dominated by men and characterized by unprec-edented material production, the importance of ecological ethics should be reevaluated and resurrected as a spiritual redemption for human beings returning to nature and ethic.Ⅳ.The Analysis of the Character of Carrie in the NovelProfessor Gao Yufen analyzes the aspect of Carrie’s insatia-ble character through her relations with the other three men, which helps invoke readers’considerations over the view of life of Dreiser’s naturalism.Gao explores Carrie’s character based on the her three different life goals. As a representative of natu-ralism,Dreiser depict American urban life during the19th and 20th century.Gao illustrate three life aims of Carrie:prosperity, easy and the mental satisfaction. The first aim is to pursue a sta-ble life with abundant possession.Carrie left her hometown,a countryside, for the big city for a better new life.At first, her wish is simple:beautiful clothes, enough money and remarkable reputation. She doesn’t care the ways to achieve her goal. She will never be satisfied with what she has gained. There are always new aims in her mind. Her second aim is to pursue more prosperity.Thirdly,Carrie has another aim, that is spiritual demand.Ⅴ.Feminist Perspective Study of Sister CarrieGuoping holds that Carrie has not confined her pursuit in the aspect of material welfare alone, and she also pursues bravely the self-realization of a New Woman. It is more commendable that she has shifted her initial simple material desire to the pur-suit of noble spiritual life for the beauty of art.In the master’s thesis,Guo also illustrates the process of self-rebuilding of Car-rie,including the process of formation, deprivation and rebuil-ding of her self.Ⅵ.ConclusionBased on the above study,we can find that the mainly fo-cuse on Carrie’s ups and downs, the evaluation of Carrie from different perspectives. There are four major angles in studying the novel:American dream and morality,Crisis of Ecological Ethics. The analysis of the character of Carrie and Feminist per-spective study.Among them, feminist perspective is a new one, which give a positive evaluation to Carrie showing the process of the self-realization of a New Woman.Throughout the review of the study, the author points outs that Sister Carrie is significant in present China in enlightening people’s value and women’s social position. In Sister Carrie, there are still a lot to be further explored in a deep sense and wide perspective.【References】[1]高玉芬.
