职称英语理工类A级考试试题及答案:阅读理解
职称英语理工类A级考试试题及答案:阅读理解2012年职称英语理工类A级考试试题及答案:阅读理解Small But WiseOn December 14, NASA1 blasted a small but mighty telescope into space. The telescope is called WISE and is about as wide around as a trashcan. Don’t let its small size fool you: WISE has a powerful digital camera, and it will be taking pictures of some the wildest objects2 in the known universe, including asteroids, faint stars, blazing galaxies3 and giant clouds of dust where planets and stars are born.“I’m very excited because we’re going to be seeing parts of the universe that we haven’t seen before, “said Ned Wright, a scientist who directs the WISE project.Since arriving in space, the WISE telescope has been circling the Earth, held by gravity in a polar orbit4 (this means it crosses close to the north and south poles with each lap5). Its camera is pointed outward, away from the Earth, and WISE will snap a picture of a different part of the sky every 11 minutes. After six months it will have taken pictures across the entire sky.The pictures taken by WISE won’t be like everyday digital photographs, however. WISE stands for “Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer.” As its name suggests, the WISE camera takes pictures of features that give off infrared radiation6.Radiation is energy that travels as a wave. Visible light, including the familiar spectrum of light7 that becomes visible in a rainbow, is an example of radiation. Whenan ordinary digital camera takes a picture of a tree, for example, it receives the waves of visible light that are reflected off the tree. When these waves enter the camera through the lens, they’re processed by the camera, which then puts the image together.Waves of infrared radiation are longer than waves of visible light, so ordinary digital cameras don’t see them, and neither do the eyes of human beings. Although invisible to the eye, longer infrared radiation can be detected as warmth by the skin. That’s a key idea to why WISE will be able to see things other telescopes can’t. Not everything in the universe shows up in visible light. Asteroids, for example, are giant rocks that float through space — but they absorb most of the light that reaches them. They don’t reflect light, so they’re difficult to see. But they do give off infrared radiation, so an infrared telescope like WISE will be able to produce images of them. During its mission WISE will take pictures of hundreds of thousands of asteroids.Brown dwarfs8 are another kind of deep-space object that will show up in W ISE’s pictures. These objects are “failed” stars — which means they are not massive enough to jump start9 the same kind of reactions that power stars such as the sun. Instead, brown dwarfs simply shrink and cool down. They’re so dim that they’re almost impossible to see with visible light, but in the infrared spectrum they glow.词汇:trashcan / ‘traelig;,kaelig;n/n.垃圾箱infrared/’infr’red/ adj.红外线asteroid/’aelig;strid/ n.小行星dwarf/dw:f/ n. 矮星注释:1.NASA (美国国家航空航天局)是缩写词,全称是National Aeronautics andSpace Administration。

Most physicians have a contract relationship with one or more hospitals in their community. They refer their patients as needed to the hospital, which usually charges according to the number of days a patient stays and the facilities--X-rays, operating rooms, tests -he or she uses. Some medical doctors are on salary. Salaried physicians may work as hospital staff members, or residents, who are often still in training. They may teach in medical schools, be hired by corporations to care for their workers or work for the federal government's Public Health Service.Physicians are among the best-paid professionals in the United States. In the 1980s, it was not uncommon for medical doctors to, earn incomes of more than $100,000 a year. Specialists, particularly surgeons, might earn several times that amount. Physicians list many reasons why they deserve to be so well rewarded for their work. One reason is the long and expensive preparation required to become a physician in the United States. Most would-be physicians first attend college for four years, which can cost nearly $20,000 a year at one of the best private institutions. Prospective physicians then attend medical school for four years. Tuition alone can exceed $10,000 a year. By the time they have obtained their medical degrees, many young physicians are deeply in debt. They still face three to five years of residency (住院医生实习期) in a hospital, the first year as an apprentice physician. The hours are long and the pay is relatively low.Setting up a medical practice is expensive, too. Sometimes several physicians will decide to establish a group practice, so they can share the expense of maintaining an office and buying equipment. These physicians also take care of each other's patients in emergencies.Physicians work long hours and must accept a great deal of responsibility. Many medical procedures, even quite routine ones, involve risk. It is understandable that physicians want to be well rewarded for making decisions which can mean the difference between life and death.16 Many physicians in the US are self-employed private physiciansA RightB WrongC Not mentioned17 No salaried physicians teach in medical schools in the US.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned18 Of all employed physicians, those hired by corporations are best paid.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned19 Becoming a physician in the US costs considerable time and money.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned20 Physicians in the US are poorly rewarded for their work.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned21 Anyone with a medical degree can set up a medical practice in the US.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned22 There are more men physicians than women physicians in the US.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned第3部分:概括大意与完成句子(第23~30题,每题1分,共8分)下面的短文后有2项测试任务:(1)第23~26题要求从所给的6个选项中为第2~5段每段1选择个最佳标题;(2)第27~30题要求从所给的6个选项中为每个句子确定1个最佳选项。

The center, which will start out with about US$14million,will help the country develop its chip industry without always depending on imported technology. The center will make use of its research skills and facilities to develop new technology for domestic chip plants. The advent of the center will possibly free the country from the situation that it is always buying almost-outdated technologies from other countries, said the country’s flagship chipmaker. Currently, chip plants in this country are in a passive situation because many foreign governments don’t allow them to import the most advanced technologies, fearing they will be used for military purposes. Moreover, the high licensing fees they have to pay to technology provider are also an important reason for their decision of self-reliance.As mainstream chip production technology shifts from one generation to the next every three to five years, plants with new technology can make more powerful chips at lower costs, while plants with out-dated equipment, which often cost billions of dollars to build, will be marginalized by the maker.More than 10 chip plants are being built, each costing millions of U.S. dollars. the majority of that money goes to overseas equipment vendors and technology owners- mainly from Japan and Singapore.Should the new center play a major role in improving the situation in industry, the country admits the US$14million in vestment is still rather small. This country is developing comprehensive technologies. Most of the investment will be spent on setting alliances with technology and intellectual property owners.练习:1.The country says that the investment of US$14 million is big enough for developing that country’chip industry.A. 1.Cell phone studies find no ‘consistent evidence’of cancer linkA review of cell phone studies commissioned by the Swedish Radiation Protection Authority has found no “consistent evidence” of an increased risk of cancer from usage, the agency said. Studies have differed on whether the use of mobile phones increases the risk of cancer as the handsets have become increasingly popular and efficient. The governmental agency asked Dr. John D. Boice Jr. and Dr. Joseph K. McLaughlin of the International Epidemiology Institute in Rockville, Md., to evaluate published epidemiological research on the subject. The review looked at nine studies since 1996 that included factors such as type of phone, duration andfrequency of use and brain tumor location.“No consistent evidence was observed for increased risk of brain cancer (or other forms),” the scientists said in the review, released Wednesday. The agency acknowledged public concern about the issue and said many studies were still being performed and continued follow-up was needed on any possible carcinogenic effect linked to mobile phone usage.“You can never say that something is without risk, but at least we can say that there is no scientific evidence for a causal association between the use of cellular phones and cancer,” said Lars-Erik Paulsson, a radiation expert with the agency. The review singled out research by Swedish oncologist Lennart Hardell, which said that long-term users of old-fashioned analog cell phones were at least 30% more likely than nonusers to develop brain tumors. Newer digital phones emit less radiation than older analog models of the sort studied.Hardell, whose study was published recently in the European Journal of Cancer Prevention, studied 1,617 patients with brain tumors and compared them witha similar-size group of people without tumors. The review said Hardell’s study and some U.S. research with similar findings were “non-informative, either because the follow-up was too short and numbers of cancers too small, or because of serious methodological limitations.”It contrasted those with three studies in the United States, and studies in Finland and Denmark, which Paulsson said used more reliable sampling methods and were based on medical reports rather than interviews with patients. Those studies found “a consistent picture …… that appears to rule out, with a reasonable degree of certainty, a causal association between cellular telephones and cancer to date,” the agency said.(1).Swedish Radiation Protection Authority looked at previous studies.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned(2).According to the agency further studies on any possible carcinogenic effect linked to mobile phoneusage were needed.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned(3).The public believe that usage of mobile phones increases the risk of cancer.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned(4).Newer digital phones release more radiation than older analog models of the sort studied.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned(5).Hardell’s study were based on medical reports.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned(6).Studies in Finland and Denmark used more reliable sampling methods and were based on medical reports.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned(7).Cancer has a relation to the use of cellular phones.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned。

Coming Soon to a Theater Near You!What are special effects? Do you enjoy movies that use a lot of special effects?Dinosaurs from the distant past! Space battles from the distant future! There has been a revolution in special effects, and it has transformed the movies we see.The revolution began in the mid-1970s with George Lu cas’s Star Wars, a film that stunned (使震惊) audiences. That revolution continues to the present, with dramatic changes in special-effects technology. The company behind these changes is Lucas’s Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). And the man behind the company is Dennis Muren, who has worked with Lucas since Star Wars.Muren’s interest in special effects began very early. At age 6, he was photographing toy dinosaurs and spaceships. By 10, he had an 8-millimeter movie camera and was making these things move through stop-motion. (Stop-motion is a process in which objects are shot with a camera, moved slightly, shot again, and so on. When the shots are put together, the objects appear to move.) Talk to Muren and you’ll understand what ILM is all about: taking on new challenges. By 1989, Muren decided he had pushed the old technology as far as it would go.He saw computer graphics (CG) technology as the wave of the future and took a year off to master it.With CG technology, images can be scanned into a computer for processing, for example, and many separate shots can be combined into a single image. CG technology has now reached the point, Muren says, where special effects can be used to do just about anything so that movies can tell stories better than ever before. The huge success of Jurassic Park and its sequel, The Lost World, the stars of which were computer-generated dinosaurs, suggests that this may very well be true.16 The special-effects revolution began in the mid-1980s with Star WarsA RightB WrongC Not mentioned17 ILM is the company responsible for many of the changes in special effectsA RightB WrongC Not mentioned18 Dennis Muren started schooling at a very early age.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned19 By age 10, Muren was able to use computer graphics to make things seem to move.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned20 With the stop-motion process, many separate shots can be combined into a single image.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned21 Muren feels that with CG technology, just about any special effect can be achieved.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned22 Today’s movies are emphasizing specialeffects at the expense of the story.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned。

California Gives Green Light to Space Solar PowerEnergy beamed down from space is one step closer to reality, now that California has given the green light to an agreement that would see the Pacific Gas and Electric Company buy 200 megawatts of power beamed down from solar-power satellites beginning in 2016. But some major challenges will have to be overcome if the technology is to be used widely.A start-up company called Solaren is designing the satellites, which it says will use radio waves to beam energy down to a receiving station on Earth. The attraction of collecting solar power in space is the almost uninterrupted sunshine available in geosynchronous orbit. Earth-based solar cells, by contrast, can only collect sunlight during daytime and when skies are clear. But space-based solar power must grapple with the high cost per kilogram of launching things into space, says Richard Schwartz of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. “If you're talking about it being economically viable for power of the Earth, it's a tough go,” he says.Cal Boerman, Solaren’s director of energy services, says the company designed its satellites with a view to keeping launch costs down. “We knew we had to come up with a different, revolutionary design,” he says. A patent the company has won describes ways to reduce the system's weight, including using inflatable mirrors to focus sunlight on solar cells, so a smaller number can collect the same amount of energy. But using mirrors introduces other challenges, including keeping the solar cells from overheating, says Schwartz. “You have to take care of heat dissipation because you’re now concentrating a lot of energy in one place,” he says. According to the company's patent, Solaren's solar cells will be connected to radiators to help keep them cool.Though Boerman says the company believes it can make space-based solar power work, it is not expecting to crowd out other forms of renewable energy. Laws in California and other states require increasing use of renewable energy in coming years, he points out. “To meet those needs, we're going to need all types of renewable energy sources,” he says.16. Solar-power satellites will use radio waves to beam energy down from space.A. Right.B. WrongC. Not mentioned17. Solaren is going to design 200 solar-power satellites.A. Right.B. WrongC.
