【中考英语阅读题库】心灵鸡汤:Don't break a 'pinkie promise'
Don’t break a ‘pinkie promise’When making a promise, why do Chinese people like to hook pinkies (勾小指)?In China, children like to make promises by hooking pinkies with each other. They then say, “A pinkie promise must be kept for 100 years.”Where does the “pinkie promise” come from? One theory is that it has something to do with the role of fingers in Chinese culture. The Chinese character for “finger” (指) has the same pronunciation as a character that means “aim” or “purpose” (旨). The latter can sometimes refer to someone’s thoughts. So hooking fingers can be seen as the exchanging of thoughts. That might be why the fingers play an important role in making promises. Chinese people not only use them to complete a promise, but also cut them when making a blood oath (歃血盟). When someone swears (发誓) to heaven, they use their finger to point to the sky.Generally, people hook fingers when making a serious promise. In some gangster (黑帮) movies, if a person breaks a promise, he or she may have their little finger cut off!Of course, this kind of thing is not very likely to happen in real life. But we can still see how important “pinkie promises” can be.Choose the answer:1. Chinese kids believ e their “pinkie promises” must be kept for _____.A. a whole lifeB. 100 yearsC. three daysD. a year2. What do Chinese people think of “hooking fingers”?A. It is a way to break an old tradition.B. It makes people more honest.C. It gives people hope.D. It represents the exchange of thoughts.3. 【中考英语阅读题库】心灵鸡汤:Learning to love reading
Learning to love readingTaking public transportation in the United States, you can often see people reading books on their way to school or work. But in China, I rarely (很少地) see people reading during their free time. Are people’s attitudes toward reading different here? Not really. Data (数据) released by Amazon China in December 2017 show that Chinese people still read a lot. They simply prefer e-books over regular books. However, other data show that reading is still more popular in the US than in China. Is there a reason for this difference? I’m not sure. What I do know is that China has a rich history of literature (文学). From classic novels like Romance of the Three Kingdoms (《三国演义》) to the modern science-fiction epic The Three-Body Problem (《三体》), Chinese authors have created many fantastic written works.Perhaps the difference starts from childhood. Reading textbooks and doing homework can make you feel quite tired. By the time you finish it, you might not feel like reading for fun. Chinese students definitely (肯定) have to read more and do more homework than US students. So it’s no wonder that they might not want to read much in their spare time. But learning to love reading can be great. Reading can open doors to places, people and ideas that you cannot imagine. Even just a single book has the power to change your own personal beliefs and attitudes. Wherewill your next book take you?Choose the answer:1. From Paragraph 1, what do we know about people in the US?A. Most people take public transportation to work.B. Students have homework to do on their way to school.C. Many of them have the habit of reading.D. They read books that are left behind on public transportation.2. Which of the following is TRUE?A. Chinese people’s attitudes toward reading have changed.B. Chinese people prefer e-books to regular books now.C. Chinese people don’t read in their spare time.D. Chinese people bought more books from Amazon China in 2017.3. Why is reading less popular in China, according to the author?A. Chinese people prefer to watch plays instead of reading.B. It’s hard to choose what to read.C. Chinese people already read enough books during their childhoods.D. People’s childhoo d experiences may influence their reading habits.4. According to the author, reading books can _____.A. help you learn more about yourselfB. take too much of your timeC. make your imagination more powerfulD. change your view of the world答案:CBDD。

【中考英语阅读题库】心灵鸡汤:Hugging creates happiness
Hugging creates happinessWhen your friend has a bad day, what will you do to comfort him or her? Hugging can help them feel better, Time reported.According to scientists from Carnegie Mellon University in the US, hugs can be good for a person’s mood and stress levels. Hugging can increase positive (积极的) feelings and reduce negative (消极的) feelings.Researchers talked to about 400 people. They asked them about their mood, whether they had any conflicts (冲突) with others and if they had a hug that day. They found that when people experienced conflicts but didn’t get any hugs, they reported more negative feelings. But when people had both on the same day, they reported more positive feelings and fewer negative feelings. When you receive a hug, your body releases a certain hormone (荷尔蒙). This hormone lowers blood pressure, as well as reduces stress and anxiety (焦虑), Michael Murphy from Carnegie Mellon told Time.Of course, hugging is not the only way to comfort others. People sometimes give advice or just try to solve the other person’s problems directly. However, doing these things might make people feel like they’re being criticized (批评). But physical contact like hugging “makes people feel li ke they are cared about and have someone who is there for them,”Murphy said. “But that doesn’t make any judgments (about right or wrong).”Scientists are still studying this effect. They want to know if it matters who the hug is from, or whether the person in question actually needs a hug. But Murphy said hugging is always a simple and helpful way to give support to someone you care about.Choose the answer:1. According to Time, which of the following can improve someone’s mood?A. Shaking their hands.B. Hugging them.C. Kissing them.D. Patting them on the back.2. The fifth paragraph is written to explain _____.A. why hugging can help people feel positiveB. why being in a bad mood is bad for people’s healthC. what people need to comfort themselvesD. how people feel when they are in a bad mood4. According to Murphy, if you solve another person’s problem directly, he may feel _____.A. stressedB. relaxedC. being criticizedD. being cared答案:BCAC。

原汁原味外刊阅读及模拟强化训练Theodore Roosevelt tooka robust approach to life, which can be summarized as“do what you can with whatyou have, where you are.”Inother words, when you areseeking success, use everyavailable resource.Theodore Roosevelt hadno time for quitters or whiners. He would never accept that something was impossible. Every task, every goal, and every dream can be completed. All you needed to do is to make a start. Use what you have around you to take your first step.Do not make excuses for not doing something. Instead, give all the reasons for setting out to complete the task. There is always an alternative way of approaching a project. Giving up is not one of those alternatives.Neither quitters nor whiners achieve success. They continuously find ways of doing anything. When you are chasing success, don’t give yourself excuses. Instead, challenge yourself.Making the best of what you are given is life-affirming. Achieving success through working to find different ways of doing a task or overcoming an obstacle will make you feel good. Your self-belief and confidence will soar, and you will feel able to tackle whatever else comes along.Theodore Roosevelt was a great advocate of self-discipline. He believed that if we could not control our own lives, how could we lead others? When you impose self-discipline on yourself, you remove indecision and replace it with purposefulness. You become an example to others, which adds to your self-esteem.Imposing self-discipline can involve a measure of sacrifice. We cannot destroy kindred: Our chains stretch a little sometimes, but they never break.~Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, Marquise de SévignéMost of my childhood memories of my father include watching him as he sat at his desk, typing away on his typewriter for hours almost every night. He dreamed of publishing a novel. He worked tirelessly on it for years. It was a serious, unsentimental novel, much like my father, who was a serious, unsentimental man. Or so I thought.Despite being fearful of my father, I could not help but be fascinated by his never-ending typing. Dad used his index fingers to type, and he typed very loudly. Peck, peck, peck emanated constantly from his corner of the family room.Although I was a generally obedient child, I morphed into a teenage hellion. While I was busy rebelling against my overly protective parents, my father continued working on his novel. Between heated arguments, he and I ignored each other. Looking back, I believe this was how it had to be for us. During this time, I fell in love with the written word, but never shared this new passion with Dad. His peck, peck, peck was just background noise to me during those teenage years. When I was twenty-two years old, my father and I had a monumental argument that led to my dramatic departure from his house. I refused to return for another four years. And during those four long years, I did not utter a single word to him. While I was on this self-imposed sabbatical from my father, my career progressed nicely. My life appeared to be pleasant and stable. And yet, I often dreamed about my father, feeling melancholy and empty when I awoke. Eventually, my mother shared with me that he frequently cried in his sleep, fretting about my absence. Given that he was an outwardly unemotional man, I did not know how to react except with disbelief. I wanted to return to him, but he and I were worlds apart, at least in my mind. It seemed like we could not coexist peacefully.Still, I was completely torn. Throughout my twenties, I did some extensive soul-searching. Finally, I had a stunning breakthrough: My father and I were actually the same! Both of us were strong-willed and proud and, most importantly, we missed each other dearly. I realized it wasn’t his job to be the person I wanted him to be. It was my job to love and accept the person he was. These epiphanies led to a miraculous and long-awaited reconciliation with Dad that shocked everyone. Our silent war was finally over after four emotionally excruciating years. He never asked me why I drastically changed my attitude toward him. He just took me back into his open arms without asking for even a semblance of an explanation — just what one would expect a loving and forgiving father to do. To be honest, at the time, I didn’t know if he had forgiven me or I had forgiven him. But looking back, I realize that we had forgiven each other.During the golden years of his life, we had a wonderful time together. Eventually, he started to talk to me about his novel. Peck, peck, peck became a newly comforting sound to my ears. But I still never talked to him about my love for writing. Mostly, I felt I had to “forget” about writing to pursue a more practical career. Or perhaps I feared I would never be as talented a writer as he was. After all, the last thing I wanted to do was to disappoint my father. As I grew closer to Dad, I thought I knew everything there was to know about him. Little did I know about the surprise he would leave me.When I was thirty-two, he passed away right before Father’s Day. After the funeral, I was organizing his belongings when I found a very old manuscript that I did not recognize. As I began to read it, I realized that it was an extremely romantic account about my mother, a love letter so to speak, written by my father! I was in shock as I read his beautiful words. Was the hopeless, sentimental romantic who wrote this letter actually my frequently stern, serious father? I could not believe it, and neither did anyone else.My mother had little recollection of this letter, which led me to suspect that I was the first person to read it. It was as if my father had let me in on his life’s secret so that we could continue our relationship even after he had left. I missed him even more. One of the biggest ironies of my life is that I understood my father better in death than I did when he was alive. The way I see it now, this love story between Dad and me happened exactly the way it was meant to. For most of my life, I didn’t really understand him, and whenI was ready to truly know and appreciate him, he was gone. But in his absence, Dad left me ahidden treasure in the form of a romantic account, a love letter, about my mother so that I could discover the man that he was underneath.Perhaps I was meant to find his letter later in life so that he could inspire me to write again. Dad passed away before realizing his dream of completing his novel. However, I know in my heart that he is sitting right next to me, finishing his novel as I type these very words. I can hear the peck, peck, peck — the sound of my father, the secret hopeless romantic. As an aspiring screenwriter, I have been taught to tell my stories in the classic three-act structure of most films. When I look back at my relationship with my father, I realize that our relationship played out just like a classic tale of forgiveness. In Act 1, I misunderstood him.In Act 2, I fought him. But in Act 3, I loved him.【词汇过关】请写出下面文单词在文章中的中文意思。
初中鸡汤的英语作文
初中鸡汤的英语作文Navigating the Winding Path of Middle School: Wisdom and Encouragement for the Journey AheadMiddle school can be a tumultuous time filled with both challenges and opportunities for growth. As you stand at the threshold of this new chapter in your life, it's important to remember that you are not alone. The experiences you will face, though at times daunting, are shared by countless others who have walked this path before you. With the right mindset and a willingness to embrace the lessons that lie ahead, you can emerge from this transformative period stronger, wiser, and more resilient than ever before. One of the most valuable pieces of advice I can offer is to approach each day with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Middle school is a time of immense intellectual and personal development, and the lessons you learn both in and out of the classroom will shape the person you become. Rather than viewing your classes as mere obligations, strive to engage with the material and seek to understand the deeper significance behind what you are studying.Ask questions, participate in discussions, and don't be afraid to challenge your own assumptions. By actively embracing the learning process, you will not only excel academically but also cultivate a lifelong love of knowledge.Alongside your academic pursuits, it's crucial to nurture your social and emotional well-being. Middle school can be a breeding ground for social dynamics that can be both exhilarating and overwhelming. It's important to remember that your worth is not defined by the opinions of your peers. Surround yourself with individuals who uplift and support you, and have the courage to distance yourself from those who seek to bring you down. Cultivate meaningful friendships based on mutual respect, empathy, and shared interests. Engage in activities and hobbies that bring you joy and fulfillment, and don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone to try new things. One of the most significant challenges you may face during this time is the ever-changing landscape of your own emotions and identity. As you navigate the physical and psychological changes of adolescence, it's natural to feel a range of emotions, from excitement and joy to confusion and self-doubt. Remember that these feelings are not only valid but also a crucial part of your growth and development. Rather than suppressing or ignoring them, embrace them with compassion and self-awareness. Seek out trusted adults, such as parents, teachers, or counselors, who can provide supportand guidance as you navigate this transformative period.Another essential piece of advice is to develop a growth mindset. Middle school can be a time of immense pressure and high expectations, both from yourself and from others. It's important to remember that setbacks and failures are not a reflection of your worth or your potential. Instead, view them as opportunities for learning and improvement. Embrace challenges as chances to stretch your abilities and push your limits. Celebrate your successes, but also learn from your mistakes, using them as stepping stones towards greater achievement. As you navigate the winding path of middle school, it's crucial to maintain a sense of balance and perspective. While academic and extracurricular pursuits are important, it's equally vital to make time for self-care and relaxation. Engage in activities that nourish your mind, body, and spirit, whether it's reading a book, practicing a hobby, or spending time in nature. Remember to prioritize your physical and mental well-being, as taking care of yourself will enable you to tackle the demands of middle school with greater resilience and focus. Finally, never underestimate the power of perseverance and resilience. Middle school may present obstacles and setbacks, but with a steadfast determination and a willingness to learn from yourexperiences, you can overcome even the most daunting challenges. Embrace the journey with courage, curiosity, and a belief in your own abilities. Remember that you are not alone – there are countless individuals, both young and old, who have walked this path before you and emerged stronger for it.As you embark on this new chapter of your life, remember that the path ahead may not be straight or easy, but it is ultimately yours to shape. With the right mindset, the support of trusted individuals, and a commitment to your own growth and well-being, you have the power to navigate the winding road of middle school and emerge as a confident, compassionate, and resilient individual. Embrace the challenges, celebrate the triumphs, and trust in the transformative power of this remarkable journey.。

Music is a big part of our lives. But in recent years, some American schools have cut music classes to control budgets(预算).For example, Chicago public schools hurt arts education when it fired over 1, 000 teachers. Among them, 10 percent of the teachers taught art or music, according to The Washington Times. In fact, this is not just a problem in the US. In other countries, such as China and the UK, music classes are not thought to be as important as ones like science, math and history. That's partly because music is not seen as a very important life skill, and it isn't tested. Many students are busy with schoolwork, so parents and students choose to focus on subjects that are tested more often. However, learning music is beneficial(有益的)in many ways. When playing music, you need different abilities to work together. It is not as simple as it looks, according to Kenneth K. Guilmartin of Music Together, an early childhood music development program. For example, when playing the piano, people see music notes and decode(解码)them in their brains. They also use their fingers to make sounds. You need to deal with all these things at the same time.Music has a special connection with science as well. You can see that many scientists are good at playing music:Einstein played the violin and German physicist Max Planck was talented in playing the piano.(1)Some schools in the US cut music classes, because ____.A. they were too difficult to learnB. students in the US weren't interested in musicC. the schools wanted to control budgetsD. there weren't enough music teachers in the US (2)In Paragraph 2, what does the underlined word "them" refer to(指代)?A.
