The book told a story about two brothers who had to climb up and down a giant mountain to get to their school. It took them hours each way. I don't even like walking to the bus stop a few blocks away!Another crazy way some kids get to school is by ziplining! Yes, you read that right - ziplining, like at an adventure park. There are places high up in the mountains of China where the villages are so remote and separated by huge valleys. So to get to school, the kids have to strap into a little ziplining harness and cable and ZOOM across the giant gaps between the mountains. whoosh! Just like that, zipping over the valleys. How cool is that??I went ziplining at my friend's birthday party once and it was a blast, but I can't picture doing it just to get to math class. Those kids must be super brave!But probably the craziest way I learned about in the unit was kids in Indonesia who get to school...by shimmying across straightened bamboo poles high above rivers! Let me explain... In the forests of Indonesia, some villages are divided by wide, rushing rivers that you can't really build a bridge over. But the kids still need to get to school on the other side. So some genius locals came up with this wild solution: They bend over these tall, bendy bamboo plants and lash them into a tight line going across the river. Then the kids just shimmy hand-over-hand along the bamboo pole to get across! It's like a tightrope, but made of plants. Just picturing that makes my stomach doflip-flops. One slip and you'd go splashing into the rapids below! Those Indonesian kids must be part monkey or something.After reading all those intense examples, I realized I shouldn't complain about my boring old school bus anymore. I'm sure it's not as exciting as ziplining over canyons or shimmying across raging rivers. But it's safe andclimate-controlled at least! Although a ride in a Venetian gondola does sound pretty dreamy...Those were just a few of the incredible ways kids get to school that blew my mind in Unit 4. We also learned some fun vocab words and expressions related to transportation. Like"rush hour" for when everyone is travelling at once and there's tons of traffic. Or "detour" for taking an alternate route to avoid something blocking the main road. My favorite new word was "hitchhike" which means sticking out your thumb on the side of the road to try and get a ride from a passing stranger. I splashed and swam around for hours! At night, we made a toasty campfire and roasted marshmallows. I tried to catch fireflies in a jar too, but they were just too quick for me. We slept under a gazillion bright stars - I'd never seen so many before!One day, we went on an awesome hiking trail through the forest. Everything was so green and lush. We saw all kinds of cool plants, flowers, and even spotted a couple deer! I loved climbing over the fallen tree trunks and rocks. Although I got pretty tired by the end and my legs were super sore the next day.Another highlight was when Dad took me fishing on the lake. We got up realllly early, like when it was still dark out. I had to be superrr quiet so I didn't scare the fish away. I actually caught two teeny tiny fish! Dad said I was a natural-born angler. We didn't keep them though, we let them go back into the water to swim free.Too soon, our camping adventure came to an end. I was really sad to leave behind the beautiful scenery and fun activities.But Mom and Dad promised we'd go camping again next summer for sure!After getting back home, we only had a few days before our next big trip - a cruise to the Caribbean! I had never been on a cruise ship before, so I was bubbling over with excitement. The ship was hugeee, like a floating city! My brother and I had a blast playing in the waves and burying each other in the sand. We also went on a boat tour around the little islands off the coast which was really neat. I saw all kinds of marine life like starfish, crabs, and even a dolphin! How cool is that?A few days later, we went on another fun trip to Wuyi Mountain. Have you ever seen those misty, jungle-like mountain scenes in Chinese paintings? That's what Wuyi looked like! The paths wound through lush green forests with waterfalls and streams everywhere you looked. We hiked up to the highest peak and the view from the top was breathtaking. You could see the clouds drifting lazily below you and the mist shrouding the valleys and peaks in the distance. It felt like we were above the clouds in a magical fairytale world!I also got to experience some awesome new foods on my vacation. Since we were by the coast in Xiamen, we ate loads of fresh seafood - shrimp, fish, crab, you name it. My favorite was the clams cooked in a garlicky black bean sauce. They were so tasty! I tried deep fried bao zi dumplings for the first time too, which were crispy on the outside and warm and doughy on the inside. Yum! In the mountain areas, we had lots of tasty vegetable dishes made with fresh bamboo shoots and mushrooms that grew wild in the forests. Everything was super flavorful and delicious.I did cool cultural activities too, not just eating! In Xiamen, we visited the classic Buddhist Nanputuo Temple with its gigantic statue of the Goddess of Mercy. We got to watch the monks do their evening prayers and meditation ritual which was really fascinating. The lamps and incense made the whole place smell amazing. Up in the mountains, we saw the ancient Taoist monasteries built right into the cliffs! We climbed up loads of stone steps to reach them and explored the peaceful courtyards inside. Some of the buildings were over a thousand years old! I felt like I had traveled back in time.Those were just some of the highlights - I did so much other fun stuff too like flying a kite, having picnics, going to museums,shopping for souvenirs, and more. But in high school, everything got way harder. We had to learn complex grammar rules, read long passages, and write all sorts of essays and compositions. Even after spending hours on a piece of writing, my teacher would hand it back covered in red ink with corrections. It was so discouraging!Despite all the struggles, I kept working hard at English because I knew how important it was. My parents were alwaysencouraging me and got me an English tutor to help out. Slowly but surely, things started to click into place.The grammar started making more sense once I learned the logic and patterns behind the rules. The key was practicing over and over until it became second nature. I made flashcards, did tons of exercises, and had my parents drill me constantly. It was a huge relief when I no longer had to think about things like subject-verb agreement and could just speak and write correctly.My reading skills improved a ton too. As I learned more vocabulary and got used to newspaper writing style, I could read faster while still understanding everything. Figuring out context clues for unknown words became easier. I also discovered some reading strategies like skimming and scanning that helped me locate important details quickly. Now I can zoom through those dense passages like a champ!Writing is probably what I've improved at the most though. After internalizing all those grammar rules through practice, I could focus more on developing ideas and organizing them logically. Learning techniques likebrainstorming and outlining made putting my thoughts into words way easier. I worked really hard on varying my sentences, expanding my vocabulary, andimproving my transitions between paragraphs. My writing has come such a long way thanks to all the practice!Looking back, I can't believe how much progress I've made in English over the past few years of high school. What used to be my worst subject has become one of my strongest. 之后，“拼搏和理想”就一直地在我心中流淌。
那个冬天，风依旧刺骨，雪依旧纷飞。
但却再也不能封冻我的心。
冬季里的一天，她消失在了我的世界。
我竟心急如燎，才知道，在购买一本书的途中，她遗失了自己的生命。
而书名就叫做《我们的梦想》。
才发现，因为她，我的世界已注满精彩。
才明白，什么是生命。
病房里，我和她，她安详地躺着。
我怔住了，记忆的花朵幽幽地绽放了。
她说：“我欣赏你，真的。
”“当然，我们是朋友嘛!”“那你能不能答应我一件事?”“说吧”“当黑暗袭来，你决不能后退”“黑暗?”“请燃起生命的焰火去征服整个黑暗!”“……”“你可以的!你一定会成功的!”当失败涌起，当孤独来袭，当成功降临，当我在前进，我唯一的动力是她，我坚持的信念源于她，我不懈的努力因为她。
如今，沉默的我不再低语，我自豪地奔向了胜利的彼岸。
可是，她却一点一点的破碎。
我伸出手，伤感一片片落下，吞噬着我的心。
总想起“拼搏和梦想”，总想起快乐和悲伤，总想起她。
我的生命，正在悄然开放。
而她的生命，在远方的高空，绽放着沁人的芳香。
