tired? Is it really because of the large amount of mental work you do?Here is an astonishing and significant fact:Mental work alone can't make us tired. It sounds absurd. But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue(疲劳).To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all!If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer,we would find it full of fatigue toxins(毒素)and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein,it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.So far as the brain is concerned,it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired? Some scientists declare that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional attitudes. One of England's most outstanding scientists,J.A.Hadfield,says,"The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare."Dr.Brill,a famous American scientist, goes even further. He declares,"One hundred percent of the fatigue of a sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems."What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired?Joy?Satisfaction? No!A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry,a feeling of not being appreciated--those are the emotions that tire sitting workers.Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.4.What surprised the scientists a few years ago?______A.Fatigue toxins could hardly be found in a laborer's blood.B.The brain could work for many hours without fatigue.C.Albert Einstein didn't feel worn out after a day's work.D.A mental worker's blood was filled with fatigue toxins.5.According to the author, which of the following can make sitting workers tired?______A.Unpleasant emotions.B.Challenging mental work.C.Endless tasks.D.Physical labor.6.What's the author's attitude towards the scientists'ideas?______A.He doubts them.B.He argues against them.C.He agrees with them.D.He hesitates to accept them.7.We can infer from the passage that in order to stay energetic, sitting workers need to______.A.discover fatigue toxinsB.have some good foodC.exercise regularlyD.enjoy their work【答案】【小题1】B【小题2】A【小题3】C【小题4】D【解析】1.B.细节理解题.根据第一段To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain,w hen it is active, shows no fatigue at all!If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer,we w ould find it full of fatigue toxins(毒素)and fatigue products.可知,几年前科学家们感到惊讶的是大脑可以工作数小时而不会疲劳.故选B.2.A.细节理解题.根据第三段He shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than those who use laptops.Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legib ility(清晰度).But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught.Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes"mindlessly"by taking down word for word what the professor said.In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual note-taking skills.Thirty minutes after the talk, they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understoodconcepts. The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts. The researcher's report said,"While more notes are beneficial,if the notes are taken mindlessly,as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears."In another experiment aimed at testing long-term memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam. These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.8.More and more students favor laptops for note-taking because they can______.A.write more notesB.digest concepts betterC.get higher scoresD.understand lectures better9.While taking notes, laptop users tend to be______.A.skillful.B.mindless.C.thoughtful.D.tireless.10.The author of the passage aims to______.A.examine the importance of long-term memoryB.stress the benefit of taking notes by handC.explain the process of taking notesD.promote the use of lap tops11.The passage is likely to appear in______.A.a newspaper advertisementB.a computer textbookC.a science magazineD.a finance report【答案】【小题1】A【小题2】B【小题3】C【小题4】C【解析】24.A细节理解题:根据文章第二段第一行的句子:Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legibility(清晰度).可知越来越多的学生喜欢用笔记本记笔记,因为这样他们可以记更多的笔记.所以选A.25.B细节理解题:根据第三段的句子,Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes"mindlessly"by taking down word for word what the professors said可知使用笔记本记笔记的学生往往是无意识的.所以选B.26.C写作意图题:文章介绍通过实验发现手写记笔记比用笔记本记笔记好处更多,学生更容易记住记的材料,所以作者是想强调用手记笔记的重要性.所以选C.27.C推理判断题:These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future. DTo err is human. To blame the other guy is even more human.Common sense is not all that common. Why tell the truth when you can come up with a good excuse? These three popular misquotes(戏谑的引语)are meant to be jokes, and yet they tell us a lot about human nature. To err,or to make mistakes,is indeed a part of being human, but it seems that most people don't want to accept the responsibility for having made a mistake. They naturally look for someone else who could be responsible for the problem.Perhaps it is the natural thing to do.The original quote about human nature went like this:"To err is human,to forgive, divine(神圣的)."This saying mirrors an ideal:people should be forgiving of others'mistakes.Instead,we tend to do the opposite--find someone else to pass the blame on to.However, taking responsibility for something that went wrong is a mark of great maturity.Common sense is what we call clear thought.Having common sense means having a good general plan that will make things work well, and it also means staying with the plan.Common sense tells you that you take an umbrella out into a rainstorm, but you leave the umbrella home when you hear a weather forecast for sunshine.Common sense does not seem to be common for large organizations, because there are so many things going on that one person cannot be in charge of everything.People say that in a large company,"the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing."And what is wrong with a society that thinks that making up a good excuse is like creating a work of art?One of the common problems with making excuses is that people, especially young people, get the idea that it's okay not to be totally honest all the time. There is a corollary(直接推论)to that:if a good excuse is"good"even if it isn't honest, then where is even more human"可知,批评他人是更人性化的,故选B.2.D.细节理解题.推理判断题.根据倒数第二段可知靠常识似乎对于一个大的组织并不适合,因为有太多的事情要处理以至于一个人不可能负责全部工作.所以D项"一个人负责一个大公司的全部工作属于非常识".B项从"Common sense tells you that you take an umbrella out into a rainstorm"得出.A项和C项从"Having common sense means having a good general plan that will make things work well, and it also means staying with the plan."得出.故选D.3.B.推理判断题.根据最后一段"And what is wrong with a society that thinks that making up a good excuse is like creating a work of art…then where is the place of the truth"可知,作者在反思一种错误思想,编造好的借口就如创造艺术,尽管不诚实大家感到很正常,但是真理放在那哪一个地方,说明作者反对编造好的借口,故选B.4.A.主旨大意题.从全文来看,作者用三个引言导出人性这个话题,从责备还是宽恕,常识还是非常识,真理还是借口三方面来体现人性.故选A"人性的镜子";B项和D项只是第二段和最后一段的段落大意,不能代表全文.C项是第二段的一个细节.故选A. 二、阅读七选五(本大题共5小题,共10.0分)It Marketing yourself can be a good choice, which can help you achieve your goals. Though when people talk about marketing, they usually think that this is about producing a sale, it does not necessarily have to be.If you are an employee then you want your boss to take your ideas, and if you are on a job hunting then you want to find a good position. So in reality, marketing really leads to sale. So marketing yourself means you are simply "selling" yourself! The common problem in marketing yourself is that most people think that it is unpleasant to market themselves. They think that marketing concerns only to a business. Of course, this is absolutely not true. People who want to attain the success they desire must promote themselves. Marketing yourself is a useful tool. The better you market yourself, the more opportunities you will have. Marketing yourself does not really mean telling every person how beautiful and wonderful you are. It means letting your prospective employer know that you exist or you can do something better. There are actually several different ways of marketing yourself. But there are only two primaryways that you carry out. The first is to find ways to reach out to others and the second is to construct ways in order for the people to find you and make connection with you.To reach out and touch the lives of others, you have to be a good person and a good employee. In that way your good reputation will follow naturally. Have a brief and concise message that you can share with others. When you market yourself, you tell people who you are and what you can do for others. Plan well and practice your message. In constructing ways for the people to notice and make connection with you, you must be open to them. Communication is a great opportunity to make an impact especially when you market yourself. You also communicate by what you are wearing. Know the appropriate dress code and have plenty of time to decide what you will wear. Just remember to make a great first impression!19.What is the main idea of the passage?______A. Marketing yourself is a business.B. The subject of marketing yourself.C. The ways of marketing yourself.D. The problems of marketing yourself.20.According to the passage, as to marketing themselves, most people tend to feel ______ .A. confidentB. cheerfulC. terribleD. appropriate21.In order to market yourself well, you can do these things EXCEPT ______ .A. be open to othersB. praise yourselfC. wear appropriatelyD. have a brief and clear message22.From the passage, we can infer that people good at marketing themselves must be______ .A. communicativeB. humorousC. hardworkingD. beautifulDNASA might be famous for sending rockets up to space quickly. But it will be more famous for making your next holiday come more quickly. The space agency is working on a new plane, which could solve the problems of supersonic (超音速的)flight and vastly increase the speed of journeys abroad. If successful, the plane would be able to fly between New York and London in just three hours. And it would reducethe time spent flying other journeys by a half, since it could be used more broadly.Until now,the problem with such planes has been the sonic boom (声爆),made famous by the original Concorde. That happens when a plane reaches supersonic speeds. It is a thunderous noise that upsets people on the ground-disturbing animals and even causing physical problems to materials and houses underneath. It was that effect that led Congress to ban such planes from being used over the US land,a decision that in turn was responsible for Concorde's failing to be commercially used.In view of the problem, the space agency has developed a new technology and tried it out in wind tunnels, and now believes that it could be put to commercial use. That plane will fly as high as 55,000 feet-far higher than normal planes-and make a sound of only 60 decibels. That's far less than 90 decibels thrown out by normal planes, and is roughly in line with a car on the motorway or a busy restaurant."As long as we can get endorsement from the general public, the plane will probably be something that's acceptable," said Peter Coen, project manager for NASA's commercial supersonic research team,in a new Bloomberg report."If we get approved,we will have the full-sized version of the plane tried out and the plane will be put into use."23.Why does the author mention Concorde?______A. To suggest the rapid development of planes.B. To stress the negative effect of sonic booms.C. To introduce how a commercial plane is designed.D. To show Congress' important role in making planes.24.What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?______A. The basic data of the new plane.B. The working principle of the new plane.C. The problems of the new plane.D. The potential market of the new plane.25.What does the underlined word "endorsement" in paragraph 5 mean?______A. ResponseB. Commitment.C. InvestmentD. Agreement 34.What is the purpose of the passage?______ A.To inform peopleof NASA's new plane.B.To prove the disadvantages of supersonic flight.C.Toexplain why speed matters in supersonic flight.D.To clarify some misunderstandings about commercial planes.三、完形填空(本大题共20小题,共30.0分)Sudha Chandran, a classical dancer from India, had to have her right leg cut after a car accident. Where can you find this passage?A. fashion magazineB. holiday brochureC. science reportD. business contractBLi Ming , a 13-year-old student has spent most of his spare time on a mobile game, King of Glory since May. “Every boy in our class is playing it, and we hold competitions within and among classes. Good players are respected and it is easier for them to make more friends,” said Li. He added one of the most important reasons they love the game is that the historical characters are all in cartoon style and look “very cool.”Li is one of many thousands of young players who are crazy about this game. Although this Chinese mobile game enjoy great popularity, recently, it has come under fire for promoting an inaccurate representation of ancient Chinese history. The characters in the game not only travel through time and space to fight together, but also take on historical figures’ names w ith no connection at all to their experiences in history. This characteristic could easily confuse young players. Some parents are worried that it may mislead their children and have a bad influence on their study, especially on history and Chinese.Zhang Liang, a 27-year-old IT worker, thinks such worries are reasonable, but the problem is not alarming. Zhang pointed out that a proper use of history or legendary materials in games should combine education with entertainment. However, some hit back at the accusation, arguing that games are supposed to be creative, and that “King of Glory” doesn’t intend to be set in any specific historical period.“I am aware that there are many young players, some even in primary school. Some might be affected by the game in certain ways, but it can do a lot of good if students become interested in the characters and do more research to that end,” one “King of Glory” player said. After all, the root cause of the problem is that there is no game rating system in China to protect children who are too young to distinguish virtual world from real history.4. Why did the author mention Li Ming’s story in Paragraph 1?A. To show King of Glory is very popular.B. To lead in the topic of the passage.C. To explain why young people play the game.D. To persuade us to play the game .5. What is the meaning of the underlined phrase “come under fire” in paragraph 2?A. Be popular.B. Be accused.C. Be played.D. Be banned.6. What’s Zhang’s attitude towards the game“King of Glory”?A. Supportive.B. Opposed.C. Indifferent.D. Objective.CSelf-driving cars are so popular that the University of Michigan has even established a town called Mcity to allow car manufacturers to safely test their autonomous cars. While Mcity can be used to simulate many real-life road conditions, it cannot help test gestures drivers use to communicate their intention to other drivers, pedestrians or cyclists. To find a solution, US car manufacturer Ford, with researchers from Virginia Tech, firstly considered using text as a way to communicate the car’s intention, but decided it would probably not work universally. The option of using symbols was also discarded, because research shows that a majority of people do not have a good understanding of what they mean. Finally, the researchers settled on light signals. A white light warned that there were no humans in the car. A slow blinking one indicated that the car was coming to a stop, while a rapidly flashing light cautioned passersby that the car was about to accelerate. Then came the big challenge—testing the signals on real road, “We needed to try out this new lighting to communicate the intention of the vehicle, but if you’ve got a driver behind th e seat, you still have natural communication between humans,” said Andy Shaudt, who led the Virginia Tech research team. “So we needed to make it look like a driverless car.”The team designed a car seat costume that the driver would wear to cover his or her face and upper body. Of course, the drivers could see very clearly. The researchers then equipped the car with cameras to capture human reactions to a light bar on the windshield, which flashed one of the three signals when appropriate. Six drivers, all keeping their hands low on the wheel so as not to be detected, took turns to test driving the car through the busy streets. The overall reaction to the flashing lights was very encouraging. Who knew costumes could be useful for more than Halloween?8. Wha t did the team use as a way to communicate the car’s intention?A. Light.B. Language.C. Symbols.D. Sound.9. What does a rapidly flashing light mean?A. The car was coming to a stop.B. There was no driver in the car.C. The car was about to speed up.D. The car was about to slow down.10. The car seat costume was intended to____________.A. amuse the driverB. attract the pedestrianC. warn the cyclistsD. confuse the peopleDAs more people opt for the single life, adult friendships also grow more important. For people in relationships, having a reliable group is important, too—your mate will be much happier if you’re s preading your anxieties beyond his or her ears and you will also feel better. In a recent study, researchers made some fascinating findings about how “who we are” informs the friendships we hold. The study was based on the most popular personality construct in contemporary psychology, the Big 5 personality traits: extraversion, or how much you love attention and interacting with people; neuroticism, or how easily worried you are by things; agreeableness, or how warm and kind you are; conscientiousness, or h ow careful you are about life’s many duties; and openness to experience, or how much you’re into discovering new things, whether they’re ideas, people, or places. For their study, the research team recruited 434 students. They took a personality questionnaire in the lab, then rated how satisfied they were with their friends and their life overall, and then researchers asked them to recommend half a dozen friends to rate their personality. Gathering these ratings together, the researchers found that openness to experience didn’t have anything to do with friendship satisfaction, at least in this study. Neuroticism was linked to lower satisfaction (probably because emotionally unstable people may be dramatic or hard to please, at least in my personal experience). But having high scores in the three remaining sunnytraits-conscientiousness, extra version, and agreeableness-predicted higher friendship satisfaction. However, it’s a pretty intuitive(直觉的) result, since it’s easy to be friends with someone who’s always on time, always saying that you’re right, and always up to hang out. But if you don’t exactly identify with all that, fear not: Your personality is so much more than your traits.11. What does the author think of the friendship?A. It is helpful to dating and workB. It can relieve your negative emotionsC. It has nothing to do with personalityD. It is based on the 5 popular personality traits12. What did the recent study find?A. The biggest 5 personality traitsB. The methods of informing the friendshipsC. The ways to form the most popular personalityD. The relationship between personality and friendships13. What opinion does the author hold?A. It’s hard to please emotionally unstable peopleB. A punctual person can surely make more friendsC. Friends are more important than families for single personsD. The five traits are equally demanded in getting higher friendship satisfactionEHow do you get to Carnegie Hall(卡内基音乐厅)? “practice, practice, practice” is the well-known answer. But for some inspiring young musicians from the Afghanistan National Institute of Music in Kabul, the road to the famous concert hall was more difficult. The Afghan Youth Orchestra(AYO) is made up of young people who study at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music. But Gulalai says she’s heard a bit of Jennifer Lopez and Shakira and she likes them. Milad says he has heard of Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, but hasn’t yet had a chance to listen to them. Before Milad went onstage that night with the band of Afghan kids who had survived a war, I asked him if he had ever experienced true peace. “No, not yet,” he ans wered, adding, “I hope I will be able to.”Later during the performance, as he played one of Carnegie Hall’s famous grand pianos, the look of pure joy on his face convinced me that he found peace in music.14. What is Gulalai’s opinion on music?A. It makes people understand each other.B. It calms her down in the war.C. It is a kind of violent language.D. It saves her from the killing at war.15. Eat24 works with 20,000 restaurants in more than 1,500 cities all over the U.S.On Yelp's reviews site, you can find new restaurants to suit your tastes, and now that the company is acquiring Eat24, the idea is that it will also let you take the next step: order food to your door.“If you're looking at a restaurant, you want to be able to book that restaurant,”Yelp co-founder and CEO Jeremy said in a Tuesday interview. “If we can integrate(融入) that into the Yelp experience, it makes the site much better.”The move is just one way that some of Internet's most recognizable names are branching into online food delivery to improve their existing business. Last August, payments company Square bought Caviar, a high-end quick food delivery service. And that same month, Uber tested a fast food delivery service called UberFRESH, which aimed to deliver meals from local restaurants to customers in less than 10 minutes. In each case, food delivery can provide an added source of income, and it canalso help these companies push the use of their existing services. The market for food delivery is hardly small, and mobile technologies can speed up the process, potentially expanding the business even further.18. How does Yelp pay for the company Eat24?A. Totally by cheque.B. Totally in cash.C. Partly in stock.D. Only in credit.19. What can customers NOT do on the new Yelp's website?A. Finding the restaurants they like.B. And that same month, Uber tested a fast food delivery service called UberFRESH, whichaimed to deliver meals from local restaurants to customers in less than 10 minutes. In each case, food delivery can provide an added source of income, and it can also help these companies push the use of their existing services. I went to a wonderful school, West Catholic High School, for my freshman year.I remember my first day at that school as if it was yesterday. I was very nervous. My main fear was that I would not be able to express myself due to language barrier.I was trying to have as little communication as I possibly could. And I almost srcceeded until we had to introduce ourselves in front of the class. And the moment the word "intrenational" flew out of my mouth, I was surrounded by thirty people who were asking questions one after another. It turned out to be the opposite of less communication, but it was so much fun.During the first three months, I definitely experienced a little bit of cultural shock. I think Americans are the nicest people I have ever met in my entire life. They always smile and say, "Hi, how are you?"One day, I noticed the students looking at me suspiciously. Finally, my classmate came up to my locker and whispered, " Is that true that you are a princess and that you came to study here so that nobody would recognize you?" At one point, I even had an image of myself wearing a gown and gracefully waving at the crowd.I think it was a priceless one-year experience! I saw a totally new world, experienced great culture, met a lot of incredible people and improved my language. This trip inspired me to learn foreign languages. That is one of the reasons I speak five different languages today.25.The author tried to avoid talking with others ________.A. because she was afraid of making mistakesB. because she was not good at communicationC. because she couldn’t use her language wellD. because she hesitated to introduce herself26.The underlined word "suspiciously" means ______.A. surprisinglyB. doubtfullyC. angrilyD. thankfully27.It can be inferred from the passage that ________ .A. the author didn’t want to make herself knownB. the author thought people had a vivid imaginationC. the author decided to settle in the USAD. the author thought the USA was a good place for learning languageC.The US plans to extend its endangered species protection to lions in Africa.US Fish and Wildlife Service(FWS)will classify lions in southern and eastern Africa as threatened. The move will place tighter restrictions on the import of lion“trophies”,such as paws or heads. While the US cannot regulate hunting in other countries, the move is significant because around half of a11 lion hunting in Africa is conducted by Americans.According to FWS data, more than 5,600 lions have been killed and imported by American hunters over the past decade.Under the new FWS rules, bringing lion parts to the US will be banned in most circumstances if the animal is from a country where lions are endangered.Hunters will have to show the trophies were“legally obtained”from countries that have “a scientifically sound management program that benefits the subspecies in the wild”·This regulation is expected to place a far greater burden of proof upon hunters who claim that the money from lion hunting has been used to help communities in Africa and the overall conservation of lions. The persistent downward trend in lion numbers, due to habitat loss and hunting by locals and foreign tourists, suggests there hasbeen little conservation benefit from organized hunts. An international study, published in September, found African lion numbers have decreased by half since 1993,with a further 50%decline expected over the next 20 years for populations in west, central and east Africa·“The lion is one of the planet’s most beloved species and an irreplaceable part of our shared global heritage,”said Dan Ashe, director of the FWS.“If we want to ensure that healthy lion populations continue to wander around the African savannas and forests of India,it’s up to all of us—not just the people of Africa and India —to take action.28.Why will lions be classified as endangered in southern and eastern Africa?
