2024年江苏省一般高等学校“专转本”统一考试高校英语第I卷(共100分)Part I Reading Comprehension (共40分)Passage oneUnder proper conditions, sound waves will be reflected from a hillside or other such obstruction. Sound travels at the rate of about one-fifth of mile per second. If the hill is eleven hundred feet away, it takes two seconds for the sound to travel o the hill and back. Thus, by timing the interval between a sound and its reflection (the echo), you can estimate the distance to an obstruction.During word war 2 the British used a practical application of this principle to detect German planes on their way to bomb London long before the enemy was near the target. They used radio waves instead of sound waves, since radio waves can penetrate fog and clouds. The outnumbered Royal Air Force (RAF) always seemed to the puzzled Germans to be lying in wait at the right time and never to be surprised. It was radio echoes more than anything else that won the Battle of Britain.Since the radio waves were used to tell the direction in which to send the RAF planes and the distance to send them (their range of flight, in other words), the device was called radio directing and ranging, and from the initials the word radar was coined. (files come from )1. Sound waves reflected from a hill can be used to estimate the.A. heigt of the hillB. speed of soundC. distance to the hillD. intensite of sound2. The Romans were the best of the ancient engineers and architects. They were brilliant students of Greek geometry and trigonometry (三角学) , and they applied their knowledge to the construction of fine bridges, roads, aqueducts (渠道) , and public buildings. They knew about the smelting of iron ore, but they used the iron they produced mainly for spears, swords, and shields, rather than for building construction. While the Romans accomplished practical wonders, they did very little theoretical scientific thinking. Because of their frequent wars, many of their inventions were no more than improvements in the design of Greek weapons with which they were familiar. There are two reasons for the Romans neglect of philosophy and pure mathematics. First, they were apparently too busy conquering nearby nations and forming them into a rapidly growing empire to waste time on abstract thinking. Secondly, they were handicapped (阻碍) by the rigidity of their numerical system. (Try to multiply XI by LVII orto divide CXLIII by IX; it simply cannot be done with pencil and paper.) The Romans did all of their arithmetic on an abacus, the ancient counterpart of the modern computing machine. Their number system discouraged the study of pure mathematics.6. The author calls the Romans “practical” because theyA. Cared little about philosophyB. Applied their knowledge to constructionC. Saw the necessity for developing theoretical scienceD. Studied the past and learned from it7.The ancient Romans did not concern themselves withA. Theoretical or abstract thoughtB. applied mathematicsC. However, his summer course included ancient history, which Papa felt our schools neglected, and navigation, in which we first had a formal examination in the dining room, part of which consisted of tying several knots in a given time limit. Then we were each separately sent on what was grandly referred to as a cruise in my father’s 18-foot knockabout, spending the night on board, and loaded down, according to formally plot our course, using the tide table, even though our goal was an island I could see quite clearly across the water in the distance.16. The first of these was a colonial institution. It began in New England with the establishment in 1635 of the Boston Free Latin School. The curriculum consisted mainly of the classical languages, and the purpose of this kind of school was the preparation of boys for college, where most of them would be fitted for the ministry. The academy began in the early 1750’s with Benjamin Franklin’s school in Philadelphia, which later became the University of Pennsylvania. It extended generally to about the middle of the nineteenth century, except in the southern states where the public high school was late in developing and where the academy continued a principal means of secondary education even after 2900. the academy was open to girls as well as to boys, and it provided a wider curriculum than the Latin grammar school had furnished. It was designed not only as a wider curriculum than the Latin grammar school had furnished. It was designed not only as a preparation for college but also for practical life in commercial and business activities. Although its wide educational values were evident and are recognized as important contributions to secondary education in this country, the academy was never considered a public institution as the public high school has come to be.The public high school had its origin in Massachusetts in 1821 when the EnglandClassicalSchool was established in Boston. In 1827, that state enacted the first state-wide public high-school law in the United States. By 1840, there were perhaps a dozen public high schools in Massachusetts and many in other eastern states; by 1850, they were also to be found in many other states.Just as the curriculum of the academy grew out of that of the Latin grammar school, so the curriculum of the public high school developed out of the academy. The public high school in the United States is a rejection of the aristocratic (贵族) and selective principle of the European educational tradition. Since 1890, enrollments in secondary schools, mainly public high schools, have practically doubled in this country every ten years.16. 2006年江苏省普通高校“专转本”统一考试大学英语第I卷(共100分)Part I Reading Comprehension (共20小题,每小题2分,共40分)Passage 1Vegetable gardening is the relaxing art and science of turning a love for growing plants into a meaningful activity. Having vegetables in the backyard makes home gardening appealing for many people. In addition, vegetable gardening provides exercise and fun for both urban and suburban families.Vegetable gardeners agree that many home-grown vegetables are superior to those purchased from markets. Form spring through late fall, a well-planned and well-kept garden can provide a supply of fresh vegetables, thus increasing the nutrition of the family diet.Freezers make it possible to keep some of the vegetables to be enjoyed at a later date. Other vegetables can be stored for a few months in a cool area.Although the money spent for a garden may be little, one cannot escape the fact that gardening requires hard work and time. Many of the gardening tasks must be performed at times that are most inconvenient. Not doing jobs that should be done on a regular basis may result in failure and a negative feeling toward gardening. One should not plant a garden that is too large for him to care for. A small, well-kept garden is more enjoyed and profitable than a large neglected one. Vegetables do well in full sunlight and need at least five or six hours of sun during the middle of one day. Too much shading results in poor plants and few vegetables. If possible, the garden should be near the house, so the garden can work in it whenever they are free.Soils for vegetables be easily broken up and porous (多孔的) for quick water drainage and good aeration (透气) . A man’s secretary became his suits to the dry-cleaners; telling lies on the telephone to keep away people he did not wish to speak to; and, of course, typing and filling and taking shorthand. Now all this may be changing again. The microchip (芯片) and high technology is sweeping the British office, taking with it much of the routine clerical (文书的) work tat secretaries did.“Once office technology takes over generally, the status of the job will rise again because it will involve the high-tech work—and then men will want to do it again.”That was said by one of the executive (male) of one of the biggest secretarial agencies in this country. What he has predicted is already under was in the U. S.Once high technology has made the job of secretary less routine (乏味的) , will there be a male takeover? Men should be careful of thinking that they can walk right into the better jobs. There are a lot of women secretaries who will do job as well as men—not just because they can buy negligees (女士长睡衣) for the boss's wife, but because they are as efficient and well-trained to cope with word processors and computers and computers as men.6. For most of its history, life on Earth was restricted to the sea. Living things began to popular the land slightly over 400 million years ago, and humans have existed for no more than 3 million years. One way to represent the evolution of life is to compress the 4.6-billion-year history of Earth into a 1-year-log film. In such a film, earth forms as the film begins on January 1, and through all of January and February it cools and is cratered (变成坑状) and the first oceans form. But those oceans remain lifeless until sometimes in March or early April, when the first living things develop. The 4-million-year history of Precambrian (前寒武纪) evolution lasts until the film reaches mid-November, when primitive ocean life begins to evolve into complex organisms such as trilobites (三叶虫) .If we examine the land instead of the oceans, we find a lifeless waste. But once our film shows plant and animal life on the land, about November 28, evolution proceeds rapidly. It is common for long-time joblessness,” argues Professor John A. Challenger. Although the Internet has the potential to be very useful for job seekers and it has become the primary tool for many, Challenger believes that it should be considered secondary to be traditional technique of meeting would-be employers in person. In addition to slowing job search efforts, the Internet is making the hiring process longer for the employer. In a survey of 5,000 hiring managers by an online resume site, 72% said that a majority of the resumes they received in response to an online job posting did not match the position’s description.“The more unrelated resumes managers have to go through in order to select the few to bring in for interviews, the longer it takes to fill the position,”points out Challenger. “One result of this has been the increased use of screening software by employers. This will make it even more difficult for job seekers get their resumes in front of the hiring executive for an interview.”“All of this is not to say that the Internet has not revolutionized job hunting. It has certainly made it easier for someone in San Francisco, for example, to search for job opening in Miami. In addition, the ability to conduct keyword searches have reduces the amount of time it takes to find the type of position a person is seeking.”“Job seekers must learn how to use the Internet as a tool, rather than just replying on it as a means forsubmitting electronic resumes,” concludes Challenger.16. They may be underdeveloped or underweight. They may suffer from poor health or limited intelligence. In addition, poorly nourished children are more likely to drop out of school and earn less money as adults. The report notes that too little food is not the only cause of poor nutrition. Many children who live in homes with plenty of food suffer for other reasons. For example, the study says that mothers often fail to give their newly born babies their breast milk. This milk-like substance is called colostrums (初乳). It is full of nutrients that improve a baby’s ability’s to fight infections and disease. The study also links malnutrition (营养不良) to economic growth in poor countries. A lack of nutrition in early childhood can cost developing nations up to three percent of their yearly earning. Many of these same countries have economies that are growing at a rate of two to three percent yearly. The study suggests that poor countries could possibly double their economic growth if they improved nutrition.Africa and South Asia are affected the most by poor nutrition. The study says about half of all children in India do not get enough good food. The World Bank study also notes that rates of malnutrition in South Asia are almost double those in central and southern Africa. Other parts of the world are also severely affected, including Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Yemen, Guatemala and Peru. The study recommends that developing countries change their policies to deal with malnutrition. Instead of directly providing food, the study suggests educational programs in health and nutrition for mothers with young babies. It also recommends cleaner living conditions and improvements in health care.World Bank nutrition specialist Meera Shekar said the period of life between pregnancy and two years is extremely important. Governments with limited resources should take direct action to improve nutrition for children during this period.16. What’s the main topic of the passage?A. Poor nutrition in developing countries.B. 江苏省专升本英语真题2008年

江苏省专升本英语真题2008年

江苏省专升本英语真题2008年第Ⅰ卷Part ⅠReading ComprehensionDirections: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by five comprehension questions. Read the passages and answer the questions. Then mark your answer on the answer sheet. Passage OneSometimes, people simply do not realize they are being ill mannered. Take Ted, for example. He prides himself on speaking his mind, and has something to say on everything. But his frankness is often extremely embarrassing. He is incapable of saying, "I thought that last advertising campaign had a lot of good ideas in it, but perhaps next time we could give the copy more vitality(活力)." Instead, he would say, "That campaign was a disaster. A child of three could have done better!"The fact that he is often right does not help. Other employees dislike his manner even more, but he is too insensitive to notice.Another character among the list of ill-mannered employees is Sally, who seems to regard just being at work as a severe punishment. Everything is done unwillingly. Asking her to do a task beyond her basic job description is often not worth the trouble. It will be done, but only half-heartedly. Fergus is just the opposite. He shows an over-familiarity to his boss. When an important visitor is shown into the manager's office, Fergus cannot take the hint and leave. Instead he will attempt to take part in the conversation, declaring, "You can talk in front of me. Henry and I don't have many secrets, do we?" Over the years Fergus has fallen behind his former equals. But he seeks to maintain the same close relationship that he imagines existed in their younger days.1. Which of the following words describes Ted best? ______A.Cold.B.Tactless.C.Stupid.D.Warm-hearted.答案:B[解答] 文章第一段第一句指出,有些时候有些人并不知道他们的举止不当,紧接着作者就举了Ted的例子,说他喜欢对任何事发表评论,但是好心经常引来一些尴尬的局面。

Part I Reading comprehension:(共20小题,每题2分,共40分)Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, D. You should decide the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1It seems that fate was on the side of the Japanese. At 6:30 a.m. on 7 December a small Japanese submarine entered a prohibited area off Oahu and was sunk by destroyers and aircraft. The naval watch-officer was informed and, in his turn, informed the Chiefs-of-Staff at Pearl Harbour; but for some reason no general alert was given. More extraordinary still, it is a fact that at 7.00 a.m. the operator of a provisional detector station out in the Pacific belonging to the American Army reported a large flight of aeroplanes about 210 kilometres from Oahu to the east-northeast. An army lieutenant decided that the aeroplanesmust obviously be friendly ones and took no action. An unusually cloudy sky added to Japanese luck. A routine dawn patrol of American aircraft had passed over Oahu and reported nothing. At 7:50 a.m. on that Sunday morning a great noise of approaching aircraft was heard on Oahu and at 7:55 the first bombs fell. Low-level bombers and torpedo aircraft attacked the ships in the harbour and the naval installations; high-level bombers bombed the airfields and also Honolulu some 11 kilometres away. The attacks were followed by fighter planes firing machine-guns with incendiary bullets, particularly at the planes on the airfield; some pocket submarines attacked the harbour at the same time.Just as there had been no adequate air or sea patrols, so inside Pearl Harbour no precautions against attack had been taken; warships were moored close one against another and a large pro-portion of officers and ratings were on leave and many sleeping ashore. A similar peace-time carelessness pervaded the Hickham army airfield close to Pearl Harbour and other aerodromes on the island. Before the last attack, which was made at 9:00 a.m. and which met with heavy anti-airs craft and naval gun-fire, the Japanese were able to strafe their objectives almost without resistance and the aircraft were able to return to their carriers to refuel and to return to the attack.Of the eight battleships, the Arizona, California and Utah, a target ship, were sunk outright; the Oklahoma capsized shortly after being bombed; the Nevada was set on fire and put out of action for many months; the three others were more or less seriously damaged. Considerable additional damages were done to ships, a minelayer was sunk, three cruisers damaged, two destroyers sunk and another damaged. Some 2,300 officers and men were killed and some hundreds of the nearly two thousand wounded died later. The Japanese are said to have lost 60 aircraft, whilst the Americans had 173 destroyed and over 100 damaged.1. How was fate on the side of the Japanese?A. No general alert was given by the Chiefs-of-Staff.B. A cloudy sky covered the Japanese movement.C. Japanese submarine was able to enter a prohibited area.D. All of the above.2. What information did the naval watch-officer give his superiors at Pearl Harbour?A. A small Japanese submarine had entered a prohibited area off Oahu.B. Japanese destroyers and aircraft had entered the prohibited area off Oahu.C. The Japanese were sending their submarines into the prohibited area off Oahu.D. An unidentified submarine was sunk by destroyers and aircraft.3. What was "extraordinary" about the sighting of planes by the provisional detector station?A. The planes were immediately shot down.B. An army lieutenant took no action, thinking the planes were friendly.C. The planes were too far away to be seen.D. The station was supposed to be looking for ships, not planes.4. What does 'capsized' mean?A. 'Overturned'B. 'Started its engines'C. 'Caught fire'D. 'Escaped'5. Why was the United States unprepared for the attack?A. The U.S. and Japan had just signed a peace treaty.B. The attack came as a complete surprise.C. All the ships of the U.S. Navy were somewhere else.D. The U.S. thought it would attack Japan first.Passage 2Joe works for a large auto-insurance company. He thought it wasn't hurt to leave the key in the truck when he filled his gas tank at a self-service gas station. But moments later, as he was paying the money, he saw the truck being driven away.In 1987, 1.6 million motor vehicles were stolen in the United States---one every 20 seconds. If current trends continue, experts predict annual (每年的) vehicle thefts (行窃) could be more than two millions by the end of the decade.Vehicles theft is a common occurrence, which has a direct impact on over four million victims a year. The cost is surprising. Many police officials blame professional thieves for the high volume (大量) of thefts. It is a major moneymaker for organized crime. Normally, stolen cars are taken to pieces and the parts are sold to individuals. But as many as 200,000 cars are smuggled (走私) out of the country every year. Most go to Latin America, the Middle East and Europe.Only about 15 percent car thefts result in an arrest, because few police departments routinely conduct in-depth auto investigations. When thieves are arrested, judges will often sentence them to probation (缓刑), not immediately put them in prison because the prisons are overcrowded with violent criminals. One exception is Michigan program that assigns 92 police officers to work full-time on the state's 65,000 car theft cases a year. Since 1986, when the effort began, the state's auto-theft rate has fallen from second in the nation to ninth. How can you protect your car? If you live in a high-theft area of drive an expensive model, consider a security system. It may cost anywhere from $25 to $1,000. Some systems engage automatically-simply removing the key disables (使失去能力) the fuel pump and the starter. When cars are equipped with such systems, thefts may drop by one-third. In some states, you may be able to use a device that sends radio signals, allowing stolen cars to be tracked by police.6. The passage is mainly about _________.A. Michigan programB. security systemC. police departments' routine jobD. vehicle theft7. The following are not the ways thieves sell the stolen cars except that they are __________.A. sold to auto-insurance companyB. sold to AustraliaC. smuggled to Latin America, the Middle East and EuropeD. sold to individuals as a whole8. The author predicts the annual vehicle theft could be ________ in 1989.A. 1.6 millionB. less than 2 millionC. 65,000D. over 2 million9. The way to protect your car from stealing is to ________.A. notify policeB. buy insuranceC. have a special fuel pump and a starterD. equip a security system10. The reason judges will often sentence the thieves to probation and not immediately put them in prison is that _________.A. there isn't enough evidence (证据)B. the prisons are overcrowded with violent criminalsC. vehicle theft is a criminal misdemeanor (轻罪)D. the thieves have escaped to EuropePassage 3Between the ages of six months and one year, the baby learns to laugh for essentially the same reasons he will laugh throughout his life, says Dr. Jacob Levine, associate professor of psychology at Yale University. Dr. Levien says that people laugh to express mastery over an anxiety. Picture whathappens when a father tosses his child into the air. The child will probably laugh-----but not the first time. In spite of his enjoyment of “flying”, he is too anxious to laugh. How does he know Daddy will catch him? Once the child realizes he will be caught, he is free to enjoy the game. But more importantly, sys Dr. Levine, the child laughs because he has mastered an anxiety.Adult laughter is more subtle, but we also laugh at what we used to fear. The feeling of achievement, or lack of it, remains a crucial factor. Giving a first dinner party is an anxious event for a new hostess? All goes well; the party is over. Now she laughs freely. Her pleasure form having proved her success is the foundation for her pleasure in recalling the evening’s activities. She couldn’t enjoy the second pleasure without the fi rst, more important one---her mastery of anxiety.Laughter is a social response triggered by cues. Scientists have not determined a brain center for laugher, and they are perplexed by patients with certain types of brain damage who go into laughing fits for no apparent reason. The rest of us require company, and a reason to laugh.11.The intended audience of the passage are ____.A. mental patientsB. humoristsC. psychologistsD. the general public12. The primary purpose of this passage is to demonstrate _____.A. that we are social animalsB. why we laughC. the importance of humorD. that laughter is deceptive13.According to the passage, a six-month old laughs _____.A. more frequently than an adultB. when he fells anxiousC. more subtly than an adultD. when he masters his anxiety14.Which of the following best supports the theory discussed in the passage?.A. A footballer laughs before the game starts.B. A student laughs at the mistakes made by his teacherC. A students laughs after an examD. A guest laughs at a joke told by his host.15. Which of the following would the author agree with?A. Company tends to make us laugh moreB. We never laugh alone.C. We all laugh for a good reason.D. We laugh for the physical sensations involvedPassage 4Unless we spend money to spot and prevent asteroids (小行星) now, one might crash into Earth and destroy life as we know it, say some scientists.Asteroids are bigger versions of the meteoroids (流星) that race across the night sky. Most orbit the sun far from Earth and don't threaten us. But there are also thousands of asteroids whose orbits put them on a collision course with Earth.Buy $50 million worth of new telescopes right now. Then spend $10 million a year for the next 25 years to locate most of the space rocks. By the time we spot a fatal one, the scientists say, we'll have a way to change its course. Some scientists favor pushing asteroids off course with nuclear weapons. But the cost wouldn't be cheap. Is it worth it? Two things experts consider when judging any risk are: 1) How likely the event is; and 2) How bad the consequences if the event occurs. Experts think an asteroid big enough to destroy lots of life might strike Earth once every 500,000 years. Sounds pretty rare - but if one did fall, it would be the end of the world. "If we don't take care of these big asteroids, they'll take care of us," says one scientist. "It's that simple."The cure, though, might be worse than the disease. Do we really want fleets of nuclear weapons sitting around on Earth? "The world has less to fear from doomsday (毁灭性的) rocks than from a great nuclear fleet set against them," said a New York Times article.16. What does the passage say about asteroids and meteoroids?A. They are heavenly bodies different in composition.B. They are heavenly bodies similar in nature.C. There are more asteroids than meteoroids.D. Asteroids are more mysterious than meteoroids.17. What do scientists say about the collision of an asteroid with Earth?A. It is very unlikely but the danger exists.B. Such a collision might occur once every 25 years.C. Collisions of smaller asteroids with Earth occur more often than expected.D. It's still too early to say whether such a collision might occur.18. What do people think of the suggestion of using nuclear weapons to alter the course of asteroids?A. It sounds practical but it may not solve the problem.B. It may create more problems than it might solve.C. It is a waste of money because a collision of asteroids with Earth is very unlikely.D. Further research should be done before it is proved applicable19. We can conclude from the passage that ______.A. while pushing asteroids off course nuclear weapons would destroy the worldB. asteroids racing across the night sky are likely to hit Earth in the near futureC. the worry about asteroids can be left to future generations since it is unlikely to happen in our lifetimeD. workable solutions still have to be found to prevent a collision of asteroids with Earth20. Which of the following best describes the author's tone in this passage?A. Optimistic. C. Objective.B. Critical. D. I suggest that you use a multi-stage interviewing process by which the candidate meets with multiple people to provide different opinions and input on the hiring-decision. Again, keep all notes taken during theinterview. These notes should be factual and should detail bservations made by the people conducting the interview as well as quotations of the candidate’s reponses to questions. There should be no inferences made about a candidate in any notes, and no notes should be taken on a resume(简历).Pre-determine three to six questions that will help you uncover the capability of each applicant and ask those same questions to each person that is interviewed. These initial questions will serve as a departure point to base other follow-up questions on. By using the same question in different ways and you will also be able to draw close com parisons between each candidate’s responses, which will help you determine the best match for the position.Developing that interviewing process a little further, time limits should be set on responses to candidates.Today’s job market changes so rapidly that waiting more than 72 hours to inform a candidate how he or she did in an interview is an eternity(永远). Many candidates have multiple interviews within one or two days and plan to take the first job offered that meets their salary and benefits demands. Hired or not, as a candidate, it is much easier to keep a positive frame of mind about a company that is responsive, shows an interest in your success as an individual, and provides feedback (反馈)about an interview within one or two days. They give their owners automatic credit in stores, restaurants, and hotels at home, across the country, and -even abroad; and they make many banking services available as well. More and more of these credit cards can be read automatically, making it possible to withdraw or deposit money in scattered-locations, whether or not the local branch bank is .open. For many of us the "cashless society" is not on the `horizon--it's already here. While computers offer these conveniences to consumers, they have many advantages for sellers too. Electronic cash registers can do much more simply ring up sales. They can keep a wide range of records, including who sold what, when, and to whom. This information allows businessmen to keep track of their list of goods by showing which items are being sold :and how fast they are moving. Decisions to reorder or return goods to suppliers can then be made. At the same time these computers record which hours ate busiest and which employees are the most efficient ,allowing. personnel and staffing assignments to be made accordingly. And they also identify preferred customer for promotional campaigns. Computers are relied on by .manufacturers for similar `reasons: Computer-analyzed marketing reports can help to decide which products to emphasize now, -which to develop for the future, and which to drop .Computers keep track of goods in stock, of raw materials on hand, and even. of the production process: itself.Numerous other commercial enterprises, from theaters to magazine publishers, from, gas and electric utilities to milk processors, bring better end more efficient services to consumers through the use of computers.31. The answers should bewritten after the corresponding numbers on the Answer Sheet.Although. credit cards are becoming more .acceptable part of the financial scene, they are still regarded with suspicion by many as being a major part of the “live now pay later" syndrome. Along With hire; purchase, rental and leasing schemes, they provide encouragement to spend more money. Of course, it is only the foolhardy who succumb to the temptation to live, temporarily at least; beyond their means, and such people would not doubt manage to do so even without credit cards.Advertising campaigns have, however, promoted a growing realization of the advantages of these small pieces of plastic. They obviate the need to carry large. amounts of cash and are always useful in emergencies. All the credit card organizations charge interest on a monthly basis which may work out as high as 25 percent a year, yet judicious purchasing using a card can mean that you obtain up to seven weeks interest free credit. Using the card abroad where items frequently take a long time to be included on your account can extend the period even further. It is worthwhile shopping around before deciding on particular credit card. I t’s necessary to consider the amount of credit granted interest rates which may vary slightly the number and range of outlets though most cards cover major garages, hotels, restaurants and departments stores and of course what happens if your card is lost or stolen. A credit card thief may be sitting on a potential gold mine particularly if there is delay in reporting the loss of the card. However, if used wisely, a credit card can cost nothing or at least help to tide you over a period of financial difficulty.36. Many people suspect that credit cards lure people to .37. The author seems to believe that even in the absence of credit cards, some people would undoubtedly .38. In Para. 2, in addition to the advantages of no need to carry cash and being usefulin emergency, what else is said to be the advantage of credit cards?.39. What’s the main i dea of Para 3?40. The author holds a attitude towards credit cards.Task 4Directions:Read the following passage and complete the outline below it (No.41 through No. 45).Y ou should write your answers briefly on the answer sheet correspondingly.During the holiday break, I finally got around to a promise I made to my mom and dad—to remotely access their PC—to help troubleshoot problems or questions they have about their Dell laptop.A while ago, I download GoToMyPC on my, computer, which allows you to access your computer from any other computer. 江苏省专升本英语真题2008年

江苏省专升本英语真题2008年

江苏省专升本英语真题2008年第Ⅰ卷Part Ⅰ Reading ComprehensionDirections:In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by five comprehension questions. Read the passages and answer the questions. Then mark your answer on the answer sheet.Passage OneSometimes, people simply do not realize they are being ill mannered. Other employees dislike his manner even more, but he is too insensitive to notice.Another character among the list of ill-mannered employees is Sally, who seems to regard just being at work as a severe punishment.Everything is done unwillingly. Asking her to do a task beyond her basic job description is often not worth the trouble. It will be done, but only half-heartedly.Fergus is just the opposite. But he seeks to maintain the same close relationship that he imagines existed in their younger days.1、 Which of the following words describes Ted best? ______A. Cold.B. Tactless.C. Stupid.D.Warm-hearted.2、 It can be inferred from the passage that Ted ______.A. is well-known for his honestyB. tends to blame others rather than himselfC. often gives the right idea in the wrong wayD. is treated unfairly by the management3、 Which of the following is true about Sally? ______A. She thinks it's unfair to have so much work to do.B. She is unhappy to help others.C. She hates being ordered about.D. She does everything half-heartedly.4、 From the passage, we can infer that Fergus ______.A. was once close to all his colleaguesB. has remained in the same position for yearsC. doesn't know what a hint isD. knows everything that happens in the office5、 The writer is taking the point of view of ______.A. a colleagueB. people like TedC. an employeeD. a managerPassage TwoA lot of real businesses are focusing on the Internet as a way of buildingsales, but some people with nothing to sell are creating their own Websites to announce wedding plans, show off pictures of their kids or just have communications. It's not as hard as you think and it can be a lot of fun. Carol Masser has some tips on building your own Website. "Like my living room, or my study, it's where I put mementos (纪念品), collectibles (收藏物), books and paintings and things that I would like to show to my friends and relatives."Renne Tubegeihan uses his own Website to invite people into his virtual home. While John Marashod designed his own Website to attract other parents of disabled children, "I'd say the goal of this site is to basically link parents in the same situation with disabled children and exchange ideas with one another."Renne and John are part of a growing number of surfers who have established their own Websites. If you want to weave a Web yourself, it's easier than you think. The first step is to get your own Web address. They're sold by Web service providers like Microsoft, AT&T, and other local companies. You are expected to pay between 15 and 25 dollars every month to rent space for your site. But some companies, like Tripod and Geocities, issue the site for free if you agree to allow their advertising on your page. Before you get into setting up your own Website, you should go around and do some surfing and check out other sites. Once you know what you want to do, it's time to build. If you just want the basics, you can use Microsoft's free Internet Assistant; or if you want to get a little fancier, you can buy a software program like Adobe Page Mill for 100 dollars, or Microsoft's FrontPage Editor for 150 dollars.6、 According to the passage, some people create their own Websites in order to ______.A. sell their personal thingsB. set up family businessC. communicate with othersD. show off their Website building skills7、 What is the main goal of John Marashod's Website? ______A. To contact parents who like to share their ideas on raising children.B. To link parents who offer free service to disabled children.C. To send information to disabled children.D. To link parents with disabled children so as to communicate with each other.8、 Some companies offer free Web addresses provided that ______.A. their advertisements are allowed to be put on the WebsiteB. the Web service providers agree to put their advertisement on their Web sitesC. Microsoft and other service providers pay the monthly rentD. 25 dollars are paid to Microsoft, AT&T or other local companies9、 What do you need to do after you get your Website address according to the passage? ______A. You need to contact a local company for free advertising.B. You need to surf some Websites so as to decide what will be included in your Website.C. You need to learn the basic skills of creating a Web site.D. You need to buy a software program called Adobe Page Mill.10、 What does the author think about creating one's own Website? ______A. It's very complicated.B. It's expensive by American standard.C. It's much easier than we think.D. It's just too simple.Passage ThreeMoods, say the experts, are emotions that tend to become fixed, influencing one's outlook for hours, days or even weeks. That's great if your mood is a pleasant one, but a problem if you are sad, anxious, angry or simply lonely. Perhaps the best way to deal with such moods is to talk them out; sometimes, though, there is no one to listen. Modem pharmacology (药物学) offers a lot of tranquilizers (镇静剂), antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs. What many people don't realize, however, is that scientists have discovered the effectiveness of several non-drug approaches to make you free from an unwanted mood. These can be just as useful as drugs, and have the added benefit of being non-poisonous. So next time you feel out of sorts, don't head for the drugstore, try the following approach.Of all the mood-altering self-help techniques, aerobic(增氧健体的) exercise seems to be the most efficient cure for a bad mood. "If you could keep the exercise, you'd be in high spirits." says Kathryn Lance, author of Running for Health and Beauty.Researchers have explained biochemical and various other changes that make exercise compared favorably to drugs as a mood-raiser. Physical exertion such as housework, however, does little. The key is aerobic exercise—running, cycling, walking, swimming or other repetitive and tamed activities that boost the heart rate, increase circulation(血液循环) and improve the body's utilization(利用) of oxygen. Do them for at least twenty minutes a session, three or five times a week.11、 What is the main subject of the passage? ______A. How to beat a bad mood.B. How to do physical exercise.C. How to talk bad moods out.D. How to get involved in aerobic exercise.12、 It can be inferred from the passage that ______.A. the best way to overcome a bad mood is to talk to oneselfB. when one is in a bad mood, he or she may not work very efficientlyC. some drugs are more effective than physical exerciseD. a person can make a big profit if he is in a good mood13、 "Feel out of sorts" in the second paragraph could be best replaced by "______".A. put things in orderB. be in a bad moodC. search for tranquilizersD. need a mood-raiser14、 Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? ______A. Doing housework can also help you overcome a bad mood.B. Aerobic exercise can make you in high spirits.C. Swimming, walking, or running is an efficient cure for a bad mood.D. Taking anti-anxiety drugs might do harm to people's health.15、 Which of the following best describes the organization of this passage? ______A. A procedure is explained and its significance is emphasized.B. A problem is pointed out and solutions are given.C. Two contrasting views of a problem are presented.D. Recent pharmacological advancements are outlined in order of importance.

Those least at risk, says Faulkner, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. Whit-collar workers doing routine work are, however, as likely to have shrinking brains as the farm workers, bus drivers and shop assistants.Faulkner’s findings show that thinking can prevent the brain from shrinking. 2008年江苏省普通高校“专转本”统一考试大学英语

2008年江苏省普通高校“专转本”统一考试大学英语第I卷(共100分)Part I Reading Comprehension (共40分)Passage 1Sometimes, people simply do not realize they are being ill mannered. Take Ted, for example. He prides himself on speaking his mind, and has something to say on everything. But his frankness is often extremely embarrassing. He is incapable of saying, “I thought that last advertising campaign had a lot of good ideas in it, but perhaps next time we could give the copy more vitality (活力) .” Instead, he could say, “That campaign was a disaster. A child of three could have done better!”The fact that he is often right does not help. Other employees dislike his manner even more, he is too sensitive to notice.Another character among the list of ill-mannered employees is Sally, who seems to regard just being at work as a severe punishment. Everything is done unwillingly. Asking her to do a task beyond her basic job description is often not worth the trouble. It will be done, but half-heartedly.Fergus is just the opposite. He shows an over-familiarity to his boss. When an important visitor is shown into the manager’s office, Fergus cannot take the hint and leave. Instead he w3ill attempt to take part in the conversation, declaring, “You can talk in font of me. It’s not as hard as you think and it can be a lot of fun. Carol Masser has some tips on building you own Web site. “Like my living room, or my study, it’s where I put, mementos (纪念品), collectibles (收藏物), books and paintings and things that I would like to show to my friends and relatives.”Renne Tubegeihan uses his own Web site to invite people into his virtual home. While John Marashod designed his own Web site to attract other parents of disabled children. “I’d say the goal of this site is to basically link parents in the same situation with disabled children and exchange ideas with one another.”Renne and John are part of a growing number of surfers who have established their own Web site. If you want to weave a Web yourself, it’s easier than you think. The first step is to get your own Web address. They’re sold by Web service providers like Microsoft, AT&T, and other local companies. You are expected to pay between 15 and 25 dollars every month to rent space for your site. But some companies, like Tripod and Geocities, issue the site for free if you agree to allow their advertising on your page. Before you get into setting up your own Web site, you should go around and do some surfing andcheck out other sites. Once you know what you want to do, it’s time to build. If you just want the basics, you can use Microsoft’s free Internet Assistant; or if you want to get a little fancier, you can by a software program like Adobe Page Mill for 100 dollars or Microsoft’s FrontPage Editor for 150 dollars.6. That’s great if your mood is a pleasant one, but a problem if you are sad, anxious, angry or simple lonely.Perhaps the best way to deal with such moods is to talk them out: sometimes, though, there is no one to listen. Modern pharmacology (药物学) offers a lot of tranquilizers (镇静剂), antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs. What many people don’t realize, however, is that scientists have discovered the effectiveness of several non-drug approaches to make you free from an unwanted mood. These can be just as useful as drugs, and have the added benefit of being non-poisonous. So next time you feel out of sorts, don’t head for the drug-store, try the following approach.Of all the mood-altering self-help techniques, aerobic (增氧健体的) exercise seems to be the most efficient cure for a bad mood. “If you could keep the exercise, you’d be in high spirits.” Says Kathryn Lance, author of Running for Health and Beauty.Researchers have explained biochemical and various other changes that make exercise compared favorably to drugs as a mood-raiser. Physical exertion such as housework, however, does little. The key is aerobic exercise—running, cycling, walking, swimming or other repetitive and tamed activities that boost the heart rate., increase circulation (血液循环) and improve the body’s utilization (利用) of oxygen. Do them for at least 20 minutes a session, three of five times a week.11. What id the main subject of the passage?A. How to beat a bad mood.B. How to do physical exercise.C.

Before you get into setting up your own Web site, you should go around and do some surfing and check out other sites. Once you know what you want to do, it’s time to build. If you just want the basics, you can use Microsoft’s free Internet Assistant; or if you want to get a little fancier, you can by a softwareprogram like Adobe Page Mill for 100 dollars or Microsoft’s FrontPage Editor for 150 dollars.6. What many people don’t realize, however, is that scientists have discovered theeffectiveness of several non-drug approaches to make you free from an unwanted mood. How to talk bad moods out.D. How to get involved in aerobic exercise.12. It can be inferred from the passage that .A. the best way to overcome a bad mood is to talk to oneselfB. when one is in a bad mood, he or she may not work very efficientlyC. some drugs are more effective than physical exerciseD. a person can make a big profit if he is in a good mood13. “Feel out of sorts” in the second paragraph could be best replaced by “”.A. put things in orderB. be in bad moodC. search for tranquilizersD. need a mood-raiser14. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A. Doing housework can also help you overcome bad mood.B. Aerobic exercise can make you in high spirits.C.
