For 3 decades, it has attained great attention. Scholars have done their researches from various perspectives, which mainly center on: the love between Heathcliff and Catherine, religious conception indicated in the work, technics applied in the work, gothic features in Wuthering Heights, feminism, revenge and hatred of Heathcliff.Keywords: Wuthering Heights Heathcliff revenge symbolism feminism IntroductionWith the integration of culture as well as the spread of English, English literature has come to domestic common people’s daily life and aroused increasing attention by its exotic uniqueness, especially expressed in literary work, such as Wuthering Heights. Recent 30 years, a great amount of research papers of wuthering Heights have given us a detailed, downright, comprehensive and deep comprehension of this work.This paper analyzes recent 30 years’papers and research reports of Wuthering Heights and divides them according to their authors’ different attitudes and from what aspects they look into the work which centers on Heathcliff’s revenge.1Love between Heathcliff and CatherineThe love between Heathcliff and Catherine is beyond earthly conception. “This kind of love, to two soul mates, goes beyond the dream of getting the greatest pleasure from each other in either spirit or body”, analyzed Nan Li (李楠2010:326). And Ping Fang (方平1989) mentions in one of his paper, what is love? Here, only this kind of love, no matters, life or death, counted, no ceasing to be faithful to love, burning like fire, with two souls hugging tightly and melting into each other, can really be called love. No matter earthly bias or traditional morality, all have been burned into ashes by the fierce fire of their love, he also says.It is said that human,when created, had four hands, four feet, one head but with two same faces on one neck, and other parts of his body being in pair, but later, Zeus, the God, cut them into two parts. From then on, these two parts began to seek for one another, and once they do, they hug each other, without eating or drinking anything till death. According to this mythology, Plato explained, everyone is the half of the whole, and always searches for the other half. The original desire for and the process of searching for the other half are called love. Love is human’s memory of his own original state as the whole, and human’s desire to integrating with another half so as to be back to the original state of being the whole. Ruoxi Pu (蒲若茜1997:112) thought, in wuthering Heights, the love between Heathcliff and Catherine is the best reproduction of the prototype of this type of love.It is to this kind of love, that the two characters devoted their both lives. For Catherine, Heathcliff is her soul, “ my love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath——a source of little visible delight, but necessary. … I am Heathcliff! He is always, always in my mind…”. For Heathcliff, Catherine is also regarded as the same to him, “I forgive what you have done to me, I love my murderer…”. It is this kind of love between them that have moved its readers generation after generation.2.Religious conception indicated in the workIn the work, Joseph, a supporting role, can be by no means ignored, as well as his book of Bible. In many scenes, his appearances are involved in religious events. How should we look at the author’s attitudes towards Christianity and whether the author fully accepts the present religion or not? We may find out the answers from different perspectives.2.1.From the love between Heathcliff and CatherineThe love between Heathcliff and Catherine is one of the themes of the work as well as the fundamental clue of the whole story. Emily Bronte seemed to have injected religious concept in it. “Emily supports the positive aspects of Christianity and satirizes its hypocrisy”, said Zhu Hong (朱虹2008:7) “That is natural love (her love with Heathcliff) she developed when she was young and it represents the love of ego…… in the end, she gives her spirit to Heathcliff…… the love with Heathcliff is more passionate”. What Emily praises through Catherine are wild nature of human, freedom, rebelling against traditional restraints for women.2.2 From the character of HeathcliffJingjing Ju (鞠菁菁2007:19-20) considers in her thesis that, human, not considered to be able to be independent from the God, cannot survive against the God’s will. God controls life source and human are just receivers and God is a giver or the provider, the deep meaning of which is that human cannot do what they want, nor they become heroes. But Heathcliff has been made crazy and vicious revenger and gets lots of magical impulse and power. He puts his love to Catherine above everything including God. All of these characters partially put the novel beyond people’s acceptance in the 19th century. Through the description of Heathcliff, Emily waged challenge to the traditional value of the religion at that time.3.Technics applied in the work3.1. Symbolism3.1.1. In the description of the natural environmentIn this work, Emily has used many things to symbolize other things. Sen Li (李森1999:90-91) points out that wilderness is symbolic background throughout the book. The significance of wilderness cannot be expressed by logistical words, because Emily Bronte created this work by symbolic method not by concept. Sen Li(李森1999:91)thinks it is the wild nature as well as its vitality that enthralled the two main characters, though not couples were they when alive, their souls meet together after deaths in the wilderness. Their souls have entered into eternal state where the fires of lives have no end, love is unlimited and delight is extended without border. So wilderness is the symbol of their love and freedom.The description of the natural environment around when Catherine dies, including the roaring wind and the storm of the snow, stresses the sorrow and pain of Heathcliff. Letong Zhang and Ningbing Yu (张乐同,余凝冰2014:37-41) point out, ice and snow froze lives of the whole world and symbolize that the death of Catherine has taken away all hopes of Heathcliff.3.1.2. In the character’s name——HeathcliffCaixia Rao (饶彩霞2000:21) considers, Heathcliff, hero in Wuthering Heights, symbolizes a kind of tree, heather, growing in the cracks of stones. The tree struggles hard in such dangerous places as cliffs and steeps, and its figure has been distorted, which symbolize the character of Heathcliff.3.2. Other technics applied in the workWuthering Heights features originality, methods of stream of consciousness, symbolism as well as the subtleness of its language, writes Caixia Rao (饶彩霞2000:18). Jing Liu (刘静2001:67) concludes, firstly, the reality space in wuthering Heights is closed where the story occurs. The closed space described by the female writer is a narrow corner of the wide world. Fuyong Zhang (张福勇2007:40) attribute the success of this work not only to “its profound themes, its poetic language,its brilliant characterization and its delicate artistic qualities, etc.”, but also to “the author’s remarkable design and application of time in the novel”.Jianhua Chen (陈建华2011:4) says, “Emil y goes beyond traditional way of narration, but uses special narration of techniques to present her story: first, she uses flashback narration to tell a different story, yet to create the atmosphere of suspense and horror. Second she uses two perspectives of narrations to narrate the story from two different angles---that is by two different people---one is Nelly… and the other--- Lockwood…”. It is the unique use of these writing techniques that contributes to the achievement of this lasting work.4.Gothic Features in Wuthering HeightsThe author lived in the Victorian age when gothic technic in literature showed a declining trend, yet the author was still influenced deeply, for most of what she had read was written by present or former writers, and has gothic features. Therefore, gothic features can also be seen frequently in her work.4.1. Gothic Features in theme or plotJianhua Chen (陈建华2011:4) says “Emily Bronte develops the gothic theme from many conflicts that is ---the conflicts between the kindness and evilness, the conflicts between the affection and the hatred”. Both Jing Dong and Qiong He(董静,何琼:92), and Pu Ruoxi(蒲若茜2002:49) point out that the theme of Wuthering Heights---revenge and claim of power, belongs to traditional gothic theme.4.2. Gothic Features in charactersPu Ruoxi(蒲若茜2002:49) pointed out, the heroes and heroines in Wuthering Heights is gothic. The image of Heathcliff, being beloved and hated by its readers, is an example of villain-hero in gothic tradition and she referred to Robert, who held that in surface, villains in gothic novel have features of deep-colored skin, sound physical heath, a pair of incisive and shocking eyes that can seem to see through everything. Their faces show the despising and depression, and they are fickle, gloomy or irritable in their manners. Heathcliff obviously holds all of these features. In character, he is a kind of people with character of rebelling, loneliness and arrogance, Delin Huang (黄得林2008:45) mentioned. He also thought, Heathcliff is a completely fallen villain. But Heathcliff is both an oppressor and a witness, as Pu Ruoxi(蒲若茜2002:49) concluded.4.3 Gothic Features in other aspectsNatural environment or the background of the story is gothic with the factors including the fierce northern wind blowing all around the year, the location of the wuthering Height s exposed to snow storms, the wilderness full of gorses, bushes and stones as well as the changeable weather. “Just because the setting of the story is mysterious, isolated or horrible, the story creates an atmosphere of tense and horror”, Jianhua Chen (陈建华2011:4) says. Jing Dong and Qiong He (董静,何琼:93) alsopointed out that gothic methods are also applied to the description of the dream of the guest, Lockwood, when he slept in Catherine’s room and the twice spiritual disorders of Catherine, one of which is after she tells Nelly that she decides to marry Edgar and then she learns that Heathcliff’s knowledge of her decision and another one is when Edgar asks her to make a choice between Heathcliff and him.5. Feminism5.1. From the perspective of feminist translationPing Le (乐萍2007:5-6)says that through analysis of the female vision of Wuthering Heights, taking Yi Yang’s as an example, she found out that under the background of feminist movement, “Yi Yang, as female translator, subconsciously, is sensitive to feminine features in the source text and her understandings are closer to the novelist as her identity as a woman. However, restricted by the traditional moral standards of women being faithful to men and the traditional standards of being faithful to the original version, Yang’s is more confined to the original version which causes the lack of feasibility in her linguistic expression”. Yi Yang’s version is widely spread and accepted because “she translated Wuthering Heights in the 1950s when feminism in China was still at its budding stage”says Jia Liu (刘佳2010:33). So from the female version, we can see the feminism development in China at the middle of 20th century.5.2. Feminism in the contextEmily expressed her desire for equal social status of women to men and stressed female demand for their own happiness and real love through her work. “Emily Bronte’s strong feminine self-consciousness is fully expressed in the novel Wuthering Heights by which Emily wants to tell her female partners that the key point for women to win real love and happy marriage is to get independent personality, free character and equality of men and women”, sums Ping Le (乐萍2007:3).Lanyun Chi (迟兰云2011:4 ) holds “Therefore, she created the new images in her novel Wuthering Heights to encourage women to rebel against the patriarchy to get their financial independence, enjoy their equality with men in the society and family, which lays the foundation for the western feminism”.6. Revenge and hatred of Heathcliff6.1. Evaluations of the revenge of HeathcliffRevenge, as one of the main themes of the work, has always caused a great deal of universal attention. Readers held their own opinions respectively about Heathcliff’s revenge but there exist many similarities. Ya Wang (王雅2010:178), Gang Xing (杏缸2007:98) and Meihua Deng (邓美华2006:60) all point out that though Heathcliff’s revenge is completely finished, he is not happy, without much joy orsense of success. His tortures to others also torture himself. Others’ suffering s afflicted by him are not less than his sufferings at the same time. The end of revenge is that Heathcliff dies lonely in the extreme missing of his love. Min Zhao (赵敏2006:15) says “Emily Bronte proves there is no peace in eternal revenge, and in the end self-injury involved in the serving revenge’s purposes will be more damaging than the original wrong”. Meanwhile, Xiaoying Xu (徐晓瑛2010:5) mentions that, “yet it is common for every social beings to pursue love and happiness, thus, from this aspect, we can understand why the two heroes (including Heathcliff) revenge”.In the end he feels Catherine’s ghost coming, in his dead bed, he says to Nelly, “It is a poor conclusion, is it not?” when he sees Cathy and Hareton go along in harmony, just like he and Cat herine when they were young, he says, “It is far from being the case: I have lost the faculty to enjoying their destruction, and I am too idle to destroy for nothing”. Yuan Yuan(袁媛2013:93)points out that Heathcliff does not destroy little Cathy and Hareto n, for their eyes are like Catherine’s so “this reflects that love is the hatred’s home that one finally returns to”.6.2. Causes of Heathcliff’s revengeZhao Ying(赵颖2009:19) considers that the reasons for Heathcliff’s revenge include Heathcliff’s low social status, the bullying and insulting of Hindley, betrayal of love of Catherine and his low rank and lack of money which are both emphasized by the society at that time. Besides these, many people pointed out the Lintons’relentlessness to Heathcliff, especially Edgar’s marriage with Catherine is also one of the main reasons. Minjia Weng (翁敏佳2011) sums that, the target of his revenge is not really people around but that cruel world, for it is that world, singing high of materials and money that deserts him.What Heathcliff has experienced during his former life, including his loss of Catherine, has twisted his characters and human natures so much as to make him horrible, irritable, fickle, violent and savage. His physical and psychological suffering has led to his seemingly ill inclination to exercising violence to his foes as well as their next generation, Zhenfeng Chen (陈振峰2008:193) expresses. The hidden reasons behind Heathcliff’s revenge is from the society, where first, he was deserted as a little kid, with no money nor social status, which then leads to his being abused and despised, cracking down his dignity as well as honor. Many papers also have expressed that Heathcliff’s revenge and violence should be understood.7. ConclusionThrough lots of studies and analyses of recent 30 years papers about Wuthering Heights, we can see former readers have made numerous explanations of the theme, the love and the hatred, the plot, the characters, the reflected religious attitudes, the applied technics, etc. from various perspectives respectively and provided later readers with a comprehensive understanding of the fantastic story. However, as time goes by, conceptions or thoughts are developed and some of former thoughts may go out of date. Many opinions need further and deeper investigating.As for the revenge, many papers held that Heathcliff has sound reasons to revenge his foes due to what he has suffered; revenge is common to human beings. However, few have questioned whether we, human beings, can forgive others who have offended us in our daily life and in what degree, can we lay these offences down?Were we Heathcliff, would we follow the same savage and vicious paths of revenging or just follow our natural destines and swallow down all sufferings? Were we Catherine, would we marry wealthy Edga in consideration of earthly value of materialism or follow our natural heart and choose Heathcliff? 关于她本人和她的作品都有很多难解之谜,许多评论家从不同的角度、采用不同的方法去研究,得出了不同的结论,因而往往是旧谜刚解,新谜又出,解谜热潮似永无休止。

各民族的文学中都有许多惊险、恐怖的故事,但似乎没有哪一种文学像英美文学那样不仅创作出数量众多、质量优秀的恐怖文学作品,而且还形成了一个持续发展、影响广泛的哥特传统( Gothic tradition) ,哥特文学现在已经成为英美文学研究中的一个重要领域。

对哥特文学的认真研究开始于20 世纪二三十年代,到70 年代以后,由于新的学术思潮和文学批评观念的影响,该研究出现了前所未有而且日趋高涨的热潮。

根据在国际互联网上的搜索,到2000 年9月为止,英美等国的学者除发表了大量关于哥特文学的论文外,还至少出版专著达184部,其中1970 年以后为126 部,仅90 年代就达59 部,几乎占总数的三分之一。

当然,近年来哥特文学研究的状况不仅在于研究成果迅速增加,更重要的是它在深度和广度方面都大为拓展,并且把哥特传统同英美乃至欧洲的历史、社会、文化和文学的总体发展结合起来。

资料的初步整理张云军、沈景奎的《<呼啸山庄>多重主题的再阐释》认为,《呼啸山庄》的主题是多层次的,诸如“善与恶”“爱与恨”的冲突说、“邪恶”与“报应”说或“罪与罚”说等。

并觉得《呼啸山庄》在吸纳哥特式小说的主题传统的同时也成功地超越了它, 从而也就有了“阶段斗争”说和“风景宁静因素”说等主题的再阐释。

Maybe his last mercy helps him regain somewhat of humanity. The differences in significance and functions of revenge in these two stories (19)4.1 Em ily Bronte‘s vision of humanity and evil represented by the image of Heathcliff (19)Wuthering Heights reflects the harsh reality of English society in the 19th century and is a critical realism masterpiece. ―In Victoria‘s period, the rich are enormously proud of their success and property; the secular sense of hierarchy penetrates into the daily life of common people; money and property is nothing but everything. Under the control of this concept, the spirit of human is suppressed and humanity is twisted and deformed. At this time, Emily who has strong rebelling and strong desire for freedom wrote Wuthering Heights and created the character Heathcliff to disclose the evilness of the society‖(綦小风, 2006). Heathcliff‘s humanity was twisted, broken and destroyed under the cruel reality of the society. In the world reined by Heathcliff, the lovebetween Cathy and Hareton breaks through the hard soil of hatred. Only the pure love can save adegenerated soul and heal the injured heart. The stormy and fierce environment in the heights, the obvious prejudice toward the poor changed Heathcliff, from a kind boy to a vicious villain, and he lost his humanity during the revenge. Emily Bronte shows us that the oppression of the social environment on one‘s spirit and desire brings about the dissatisfaction or even revenge, which leads to the destruction of one‘s humanity. Yet, only true love can revive the lost soul and human nature. Heathcliff eventually regains his soul and humanity through the reunion with his beloved. Emily Bronte reveals and criticizes the evilness and unfairness of the society by creating the character of Heathcliff. And Heathcliff‘s revenge could be considered as Emily Bronte‘s rebelling against the oppression from the society (19)The novel reflects on Emily Bronte‘s vision of evil in human nature. H ester‘s adultery and Chillingworth‘s selfishness and his hatred for Dimmesdale that fit Chillingworth‘s evil nature and all that lead to a distortion of his personality. So, these two villains spent their lifetime on plotting and practicing revenge that is the biggest similarity between Heathcliff and Chillingworth. They are both typical villains of gothic novel and can‘t forgive other‘s wrong. Finally, these two figures come to self—destruction. Yet the different significances of these two vengeances also give us a much clear look into the two authors of these novels. Emily Bronte creates Heathcliff to show us that in Victorian England, the concept of money and class status were everything and they suppressed human‘s spirit and desire. Heathcliff, under the social environment loses his humanity and soul through his avenge. Emily Bronte believes that pure love can revive Heathcliff‘s humanity, which denotes that human is not evil natured, but Nathaniel Hawthorne creates Chillingworth as a symbol of evil. He thinks that human is evil natured and sinful, which is the basic idea of his interpretation of the ―original sin‖. Chillingworth takes evil‘s job and is condemned by the author throughout the story. (21)Both Wuthering Heights and The Scarlet Letter have two themes—love and revenge. Love is fulfilled but becomes tragedy, while revenge is achieved yet brings pain and sorrow to the people involved. To some extent, we could say love serves for the foundation of vengeance. (22)References (23)1. IntroductionBoth Wuthering Heights and The Scarlet Letter are about revenge theme. The two characters that take revenges on others of these two novels, Heathcliff and Chillingworth have some similarities that deserve further research. Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights, portrayed as a vicious beast, is brutal, selfish, and inhumane, yet he remains absolutely submissive and loyal to the woman he loves deeply. He avenges on those who have treated him badly. Chillingworth in The Scarlet Letter is a man of cold intellect. He lacks human sympathy and compassion and so takes secret vengeance on the man who has a love affair with his wife. Their vengeful machination drives the entire plots of both novels and result in tragic love stories. Self-destruction is their final ending. These two avenges have distinct significances. The author of The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorn, reveals to us his viewpoint on the ―original sin‖through Chillingworth, while the author of Wuthering Heights, Emily Bronte shows us the destruction and revival of humanity of Heathcliff under the influence of social environment, and evil is not innate. However, there are objective and subjective elements that cause these two characters‘ revenges. In my thesis, I will explore how these external and internal aspects are combined to influence the two villains‘characteristics and their behaviors. I will also analyze these two figures‘ similarities and the different functions of their vengeance for both stories.2. Reasons for revenge2.1 Objective elements for Heathcliff’s vengeanceThe objective factors that motivate Heathcliff‘s vengeful act mainly include his miserable life experience, the severe abuse from Hindley, the betrayal of his beloved Catherine and his ambiguous class status in that society.2.1.1 Heathcliff’s life experienceHeathcliff was an orphan wandering in the street of Liverpool. Mr.Earnshaw adopted him. But his arrival in the Earnshaw family was not so welcomed. Even Catherine herself at the beginning despised him. Nevertheless, they fell in love and grow intimate as days went by. After Mr.Earnshaw died, Hindley who thought that Heathcliff had possessed his father‘s affection degraded Heathcliff to a servant. His beloved Catherine chose to marry Edgar Linton, a graceful, well-mannered man. Her primary social ambition is to become ―the greatest woman of the neighborhood‖(Emily Bronte, 1994: 78). Heathcliff run away when he once overheard Catherine saying that it would degrade her to marry him. Years later, when he returns to Wuthering Heights, it turns out that he became a wealthy man. His life experience might be called miserable and changeable. Such life experience, one of the subjective reasons for his later revenge, in a sense, helps shape the formation of his vicious personality.2.1.2 The abuse from HindleyHindley regards Heathcliff‘s entrance into the family as a kind of intrusion into his position in the family for Mr. Earnshaw loves his adopted son much more than his own son. Nelly tells Lockwood: ―The young master had learnt to regard his father as and oppressor rather than a friend, and Heathcliff as a usurper of his parent‘s affections and his privileges‖(Emily Bronte, 1994: 36). Hindley left home after being humiliated in a confrontation with Heathcliff. He came back to reclaim the Heights after Mr. Earnshaw‘s death, seeking to degrade and revenge Heathcliff and separate the tie between Catherine and Heathcliff. Hindley reduces Heathcliff to a laborer and ―deprived him of instructions of the curate‖ (Emily Bronte, 1994: 44). Hindley even ―shoved him back with a sudden thrust, and angrily bade Joseph ‗keep the fellow out of the room, send him into the garret till dinner is over‘‖(Emily Bronte, 1994: 57). Hindley‘s abuse has planted a revenge seed in Heathcliff‘s heart so that when he returns to Heights he first makes Hindley indebted by gambling and takes possession of Heights. When Hindley dies, Heathcliff in turn inflicts the same abuse on Hareton, Hindley‘s son. As one part of Heathcliff‘s life experience, the abuse that he suffered when he was in Heights under Hindley‘s rule is another subjective reason and a foreshadowing for Heathcliff‘s later revenge.2.1.3 Betrayal of CatherineCatherine is a self-contradictory woman, she loves Heathcliff deep in soul but she can‘t resist her ambition for the social status and wealth. She tells Nelly ―It woulddegrade me to marry Heathchliff now; he shall never know how I love him; and that, not because he is handsome, Nelly, but because he is more myself than I am. Whatever our soul made of, his and mine are the same; and Linton is as different as a moonbeam from lighting or frost from fire‖(Emily Bronte, 1994: 73). Her desire for a socially prominent life style guides her decision: she would not marry Heathcliff. Heathcliff could not accept such a fact. For him, Catherine‗s marrying with Edgar is a kind of betrayal to their love. As Heathcliff said to Catherine ― I want you to be aware that I know you have treated me infernally, infernally!‖(Emily Bronte, 1994: 112). Heathcliff is jealous of Edgar and hates that his beloved woman likes him. The betrayal of Catherine is the most important factor that triggers his hatred of the Lintons and the thought of revenge on them. Love of Catherine is the only thing that keeps him stay in Heights. But when the only thing that kept him there has been discarded by Catherine for his humble identity, he found that the real situation of the society is: wealth and status are everything. So making great fortune is the preparatory step for his later avenge plan. The betrayal of Catherine is the most important external factor that triggers Heathcliff‘s hatred of the Lintons and the thought of revenge on them.2.1.4 Ambiguous class statusIn the 19th century, England was developing into a modern democratic and industrialized country. There are clear distinctions in class status. ―At the top of British society was the Royal family, followed by the aristocracy, then by the gentry,and then by the lower classes, who made up the vast majority of the population‖(Net.1). The Earnshaws and the Lintons are members of the gentry, while Heathcliff and the servants are the lower class people.The shifting nature of social status is demonstrated most strikingly in Heathcliff‘s identity. He starts as a homeless child and becomes a young gentleman (by adoption) then goes back to a common laborer and ends up a gentleman again. Heathcliff attributes the abuse of Hindley and the betrayal of Catherine to his low social status. His ambiguous class status leads him to realize the cruelty of the society. All upper-class characters, Hindley, the Lintons, Catherine, look down upon him. And undoubtedly, the unbridgeable gap in social positions of the two lovers makes their romance unrealizable on any practical level.―A discussion of whether or not a man was really a gentleman would consider such questions as how much land he owned, how many tenants and servants he had, how he spoke, whether he kept horse and a carriage‖(Net.1). Then, we know why Heathcliff returns and becomes a rich man and why he tries to take possession of the Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. Because of his possession of land, tenants, servants, he can be called a real gentleman. This social factor is the least obvious yet necessary external reason for Heathcliff‘s vengeance.2.2 Subjective elements for Heathcliff’s vengeance2.2.1 A sense of inferiorityFrom the moment Heathcliff came and started living with the Earnshaw family, he receives unfair treatment, Hindley‘s blows and knocking, Nelly‘s pinches andJoseph‘s thrash. He feels that he has been deprived of the right of being self-esteemed and being loved. And all these deeply hurt his delicate young heart. So at the early age, he feels that he himself is inferior to others living in the Heights, even though he may not have realized this. In order to regain self-respect and superiority, he chooses avenge. Only when he takes over Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, he finally obtains the right to control everything, and thus has the greatest chance of avenging as well as the power to bully the enemies. All these can give him a sense of satisfaction so as to balance the inward sense of inferiority. This psychological deficiency, even though is minor importance, forms his character. And this is one of hidden subjective factors that gradually produces Heathcliff‘s plan of avenge.2.2.2 Twisted characterWhen Heathcliff was a child, he was not as brutal as he later becomes. ―He was as uncomplaining as a lamb, though hardness, not gentleness‖ (Emily Bronte, 1994: 37). We may see his stubbornness and persistence. He never complains about his suffering to any other, nor shows any signs of pain. He seemed as sullen patient child, hardened, perhaps to ill treatment. He would stand Hindley‘s blows without winking or shedding tears, and my pinches moved him only to draw a breath and open his eyes‖(Emily Bronte, 1994: 36). His love for Catherine is a good proof of these characteristics. However, his characteristic is gradually formed under the influence of his bitter life experience and harsh living circumstance. He becomes spiteful, mad, brutal, cold-blooded, and has no passion to anyone except Catherine. Such a twistedcharacter le ads to Heathcliff‘s tragic destiny by taking the road of avenge.2.2.3 A blend of love and hatredAs Catherine describes her love for Heathcliff to Nelly: ―If all else perished, and he remained, I should still contrive to be; and if else remained, and he was annihilated and universe would turn to a mighty stranger, I should not seem a part of it…Nelly, I am Heathcliff! He is always, always a pleasure to me, but as my own being‖(Emily Bronte, 1994: 74). The only thing Heathcliff has is his immortal love for Catherine, even though he left Wuthering Heights for three years and Catherine has married Edgar, His love for her never fades. Readers may be moved when read that Heathcliff sobbed with and uncontrollable passion of tears: ―Come in! Come in! Cathy, do come, oh, do-once more! Oh! my heart‘s darling, hear me this time- Catherine, at last‖(Emily Bronte, 1994: 27). When Catherine dies due to giving birth to Edgar Linton‘s child--Cathy Linton, Heathcliff behaves madly. His banging his head against the tree on the night she dies, his stealing a lock of hair of hair from her dead body and his howling of agony and crying for her, all these show that his love for her is too strong to suffer. Nelly ―observed several splashes of blood about the bark of the tree, and his hand and forehead were stained‖(Emily Bronte, 1994: 167). He is so tormented by the death of Catherine that he unveils the coffin hoping to look at her lovely but lifeless face and even asks to be covered together with the dead.Heathcliff considers Catherine‘s wrong choice of marrying Edgar is the only reason for their departing and inner suffers. Yet, this hatred is not really a true one.His true hatred exists in Hindley, the Lintons, and their next generation, Linton Heathcliff, Cathy Linton and Hareton Earnshaw. In his vengeance plan, he targets all above characters and makes them suffer the similar pain.The lost of love brings him pain while the hatred increases in the lonely heart. Such contradictory emotion is blended and helps provoke his behaviors. He thinks he might achieve a kind of pleasure from the vengeance. However, his true pleasure lies in the reunion with Catherine. This mixture of love and hatred, as I may say, is the most crucial internal element for Heathcliff‘s vengeance. Becaus e a human would go to extreme when his heart is filled with love and hatred and can not balance them.2.3 External reasons for Chillingworth’s avenge2.3.1 Adultery of HesterLike Heathcliff, Chillingworth regards Hester‘s adultery as a kind of betrayal to their marriage. In the opening of the novel, Hester appeared in front of the scaffold for her adultery, which is considered to be a sin. Holding in her arms a baby and with the letter A embroidered in the bosom, Hester is cursed, abused by the villagers. Chillingworth, her husband, arrives in the scene and is shocked to find that Hester is punished by standing on the scaffold for observation because of her shameful behavior. He then leaves her alone for nearly seven years as he single-- mindedly and covertly seeks avenge on Dimmesdale who he believes has a love affair with Hester.He married Hester when she was young and beautiful but he shut himself away with his books, he didn‘t believe such a pretty woman could marry a man like him. From the moment he saw Hester standing on the scaffold, he realized that the Letter Awould be at the end of their marriage path. As Chillingworth says to Hester: ―Ney, from the moment when we came down the old church steps together, a marriage pair, I might have beheld the bale fire of that scarlet letter blazing at the end of our path‖(Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1994: 74). He decides to discover the other sinner who had been, so far, unknown. ―The learned man, observed the stranger, with another smile ‗should come himself, to look into the mystery‘‖ (Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1994: 62). ―‗A wise sentence!‘ remarks the stranger, gravely bowing his head.‘ Thus she will be a living sermon against sin, until the ignominious letter be engraved upon her tomb stone. It irks me, nevertherless that the partner of her inquity should not, at least, stand on the scaffold by her side. But he will be known- He will be known! He will be known!‖(Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1994: 63).Chillingworth feels that Hester insulted him. He says to her in the prison ―Because I will not encounter the dishonor that besmirches the husband of a faithless woman‖(Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1994: 76). Probably without Hester‘s adultery, Chillingworth might not have avenged on Dimmesdale. Thus Hester‘s audacious behavior is the crucial o bjective reason for Chillingworth‘s seven years of undertaking the evil‘s job.2.3.2 PuritanismAnother less important external reason for Chillingworth‘s avenge is the social background --Puritanism. ―The word Puritanism is originally used to refer to the theology advocated by a party within the Church of England. The term Puritanismalso used in a broad sense to refer to attitudes and values considered characteristic of puritans. It has been employed to denote a rigid moralism, or the condemnation of innocent pleasure or religious narrowness adhered by the early New England puritans‖. (胡宗锋, 2001). Puritans see the adultery as a crime and immoral act and it should be punished without any excuse. Therefore, Hester was judged and interrogated by the authority of the community. The puritans had great difficulty in loving the sinner and hating the sin in Massachusetts Bay colony. When Chillingworth asks a person in the crowd about his wife‘s crime, he is told that ―The penalty thereof is death, but in their great mercy and tenderness of heart, they have doomed mistress Prynne to stand only a space of there hours on the platform of the pillory, and then and thereafter, for the reminder of her natural life, to wear a mark of shame upon her bosom‖(Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1994: 63). He doesn‘t revenge on Hester for he thinks the letter A does a revenge for him. When Hester asks him why he does not avenge her, Chillingworth replies: ―I have left thee to the scarlet letter, if that have not avenged me, I can do no more!‖(Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1994: 173).Though he is not a puritan, he is more brutal than them –no mercy, no forgiveness for the sinners. His wife‘s adultery is the direct cause for his avenge, while Puritanism is the indirect reason and it provides the possible background for his vicious plan.2.4 Internal reasons for Chillingworth’s avenge2.4.1 SelfishnessChillingworth often studied long hours in his room, he cared little about hisyoung wife, but paid much attention to his science. He is much older than her. He sent Hester to America while he settled his affairs in Europe. He arrived in the colony, hoping to find warmth of home from his wife. During his seven years in his secret vengeance, he only meets Hester several times and doesn‘t care about her reclusive life with Pearl. A scholar, he is, he uses his knowledge to disguise himself as a doctor, intending to discover and torment Hester‘ lover. He acts like he is a good companion of Dimmesdale and seems to aid him in his time of sickness. All he cares is himself and his vengeance plan. Selfishness is one aspect of Chillingworth‘s charact er. And it makes him push all his mistakes onto the shoulder of others.2.4.2 HatredChillingworth is jealous of Dimmesdale. Because he thinks that Dimmesdale has gained Hester‘ love. But he himself knows that he couldn‘t gain love from Hester, as he said to Hester ―I delude myself with the idea that intellectual gifts might veil physical deformity in young girl‘s fantasy!‖ (Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1994: 74). But he still hopes to get the warmth of home from Hester, maybe love from Hester. ―My heart was a habitation large enough for many guests, but lonely and chill, and without a household fire. I longed to kindle one! It seemed not so wild a dream--old as I was, and somber as I was, and misshapen as I was--that the simple bliss, which is scattered far and wide, for all mankind to gather up, might yet be mine. And so, Hester, I drew thee into my heart, into its innermost chamber, and sought to warm thee by the warmth which thy presence made there!"(Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1994: 74). Hisjealousy turns into hatred and motivates his action. As Hester said, ―For the hatred that has transformed a wise and just man to a fiend‖(Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1994: 173). He thinks Dimmesdale has stolen his wife and thus has wronged him, so he lives only for avenge. Unlike Heathcliff, with a blend of love and hate, Chillingworth is filled with hatred for Dimmesdale.2.4.3 Chillingworth’s true nature—evil in heartChillingworth symbolizes true evil. He is interested in revenge, not justice, and seeks the deliberated destruction of others rather than forgiving their wrongs. Hawthorne compares him with Satan in the Garden of Eden, and Hester and Dimmesdale with Eva and Adam. ―Had a man seen old Roger Chillingworth, at that moment of his ecstasy, he would have had no need to ask how Satan comports, when a precious human soul is lost to heaven, and won into his kingdom‖(Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1994: 138). He is a cold intellect and he lacks human passion. When Hester asks him whether Dimmesdale‘s debt has been paid, he says it would have been better if he died than endure seven years of vengeance. The evil nature in his heart is aroused, as the adultery of Hester is reveals to the public. As Hawthorne says ―In a word, old Roger Chillingworth was a striking evidence of man‘s faculty of transforming himself into a devil, if he will only for a reasonable space of time, undertake a devil‘s office‖(Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1994: 170). Eventually, when the devil‘s job is done, Chillingworth will disappear. Besides selfishness and hatred mentioned above, this deep evil-nature is the fundamental internal reason forChilingworth‘s vengeful idea of torturing the priest, Dimmesdale.3. The Similarities between the characters and the ways they revengeThe biggest similarity between Heathcliff and Chillingworth is that both of them take avenge on others as their lifetime mission. They are regarded as demons, villains by the other characters in the novels. By comparison, these two figures are similar in that: both are typical villains of Gothic novel, unable to forgive. They both come to self-destruction in the end.3.1 Typical villains of gothic novels―Gothic novel is a form of novel in which magic, mystery, and supernatural elements are the chief characteristics. It invariably exploits ghosts, monsters and settings such as old castles, dungeons and graveyards, which impart a suitably sinister and terrifying atmosphere‖ (张伯香, 2001). Both The Scarlet Letter and Wuthering Heights can be considered Gothic novels.Gothic novels sometimes have a villain who is identified as the evil person. Heathcliff and Chillingworth are such villains. They both have mysterious identities, strange appearances, and twisted personalities and take pleasure from other‘s sufferings. Today it is widely recognized as one of the great novels of English literature. It is in my middle high school that the first time I read its Chinese version and I indulged in its intricate plot and love and hate between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathclif. Hitherto, I wander why the title of this book named Wuthering heights instead of Thrushcross Grange, or Heathclif Vengeance. As a matter of fact, when I read twice in English version and look up some information online, I seem to understand the intention of the author a bit. After finishing reading the whole story, it casts a gloom over my heart. I consider it contributes to the characters? unfortunate and miserable lives and grieve for them. At present, I learn a new writing style “ the Gothic novel”.The Gothic creates feelings of gloom, mystery, and suspense and tends to the dramatic and the sensational, like incest, diabolism, necrophilia, and nameless terrors. It crosses boundaries, mixed daylight and the dark side, life and death, consciousness and unconsciousness. Most of us immediately recognize the Gothic elements when we encounter it in novels, poetry, plays, movies and TV series. Gothic elements have made their way into mainstream writing. They are found in Charlotte Bronte?s Jane Eyre, Samuel Coleridge?s Christabel and so on.In order to create a horrible and mysterious atmosphere, the story of Wuthering Heights takes place in Yorkshire moors. In addition, Emily? s life experience coincides with those of Gothic heroines:loss of love, struggle, and death.The love between Heathcliff and Catherine is the main striking plot. Sunshine, sweet, and smile are not the main parts of their love, by contrast, the mixture of gloom, hatred , and misunderstanding becomesdominant tone in their love. This is why their love is being gradually developed into crazy and tragedy.As matter of fact, Heathcliff and Catherine are the leading role in this novel. Through Emily?s graphic description, the images of them are vigorous. As for Heathcliff, he is a gypsy looking little boy that he was brought to Catherine?s house by her father. However, he was bullied by Catherine?s brother and he lives a very hard time in this house. Apart from Catherine, she is kind to him and loves him. Hence, Heathcliff grows brutal and sullen. When he is informed of Catherine marring Edgar Linton, who is richer and higher status than himself, all his power to endure abuse are impaired immediately. Afterwards, Heathcliff run away. Three years later, he returns Wuthering heights with a big sum of money. Superficially, he is gentle and cultivated; actually, he burns a fire of revenge within his heart. He revenges himself on those who has hurt him in planned, such as, prevailing on Hindley gambling so as to squander all of his money; maltreating Hindley? son and teaching him abused words and ordering him to do servant?s jobs; inheriting Isabella?s family estate by means of cheating. Everyone will grit your teeth resentfully. In additional, the author doesn?t tell readers how Heathcliff becomes a richer and what methods used within three years to earn those money. We can imagine that he must employ the meanest of tricks due to his lack of educationand know-how basing on the society.Undeniably, it is Heathcliff that cause a serial of unfortunate things led to the misery of the two family, three households, and three generations.As a saying goes, “a person?s poor situation can always attribute to h is own fault.” Vice versa: maybe a hateful person has to do something bad for some reasons. In Heathcliff?s opinion, everything he did is regarded as a sign of loving Catherine, who betrayed him and become the Edgar?s wife though. Therefore, Heathcliff is the most tragic figure who has to suffer from the pain of lost loved one, and experiences persistent distress and annoy in the process of revenging. Summing up his life, Heathcliff is in constant sorrow through his days. In the end, I don?t hate him; on the contrary, the one thing I learned is tolerance and appreciation of people surrounding you.Catherine is an innocent and kind-hearted girl. She is the only one who cares about Heathcliff when he is discriminated and ill-treated after Mr. Earnshaw?s death. Meanwhile, she is peacockish, willful. When she is faced with choices which one she should marry, Heathcliff or Linton, she finally decides to marry a rich second generation, Edgar Linton. The reason is that marring Linton could make her become a much richer person and live a decent life while marring Heathcliff will turn out to be beggar. Wuthering Heights is based partly on the Gothic tradition, a style of literature that featured supernatural encounters, crumbling ruins, moonless nights, and grotesque imagery, seeking to create effects of mystery and fear. In the story, the two houses, Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, represent opposing worlds and values.I spent twenty days reading this book. After reading this book, I felt for Heathcliff at first. Heathcliff begins his life as a homeless orphan on the streets of Liverpool, and then he tyrannized by Hindley Earnshaw. However, it was not well received by the public when first published. Victorian readers regarded the book as shocking and inappropriate in its description of the passionate love and cruel revenge. As far as I’m concerned, it is undoubtedly an excellent and representative book of Emily Bronte, who was exceedingly talented and creative. The vivid description of the inner world and complicated feelings of those main characters leaves a very deep impression on me. It is about the doomed love affair between the fiercely passionate Heathcliff and pitiful Catherine. In the novel, the author put all her efforts on the depiction of the characteristicss of Heathcliff, from which we can see all her indignation, sympathy and ideals. The story begins with Heathcliff’s coming to the Earnshaw family and ends with his death. His vengeful behaviors drive the entire plot. I think there are some specific factors that cause Heathcliff to become a merciless and cruel man. Firstly, at the beginning part of the story, Hindley’s cruelty to Heathcliff has him get a taste of the cruel life and really suffer a lot, and also teaches him how to resist to his sufferings the way he receives those humiliations. As a result, it plants the strong hatred in Heathcliff’s heart. Secondly, Catherine’s betrayal which just arises from her pure love for Edgar drives Heathcliff mad. On the other hand, Heathcliff ‘s overwhelming love for Catherine adds to his hatred to Hindley and Edgar, which finally becomes the driving force of his bloody revenge.When Heathcliff is treated rather cruelly by Hindley, Catherine remains his faithful partner and true friend. During Catherine’s last days, Heathcliff met her, the two lovers embarced tightly and kissed with tear. They knew they would be separated again by death, which neither of them could bear. After Catherine’s death, Heathciff cried from his deep heart:“I believe-I know that ghosts have wandered on earth. Be with me always-take any form-drive me mad! Only don’t leave me in this abyss,4where I cannot find you! Oh, God! It is unutterable! I cannot live without my life!I cannot live without my soul!” Love is the foundation of his life, once he loses his love, his life become meaningless; however, his love nev er vanishes with Catherine’s death.As for Heathcliff, readers find it hard not to sympathize with his unfortunate, and readers find it hard not to be moved by his deeply love. Readers is to pity for his unfair destiny. Finishing the novel; most readers have forgiven him because the character of Heathcliff has not only his deep hatred for everyone else, also the strong love of Catherine, and this love deeply shake most readers. He is definitely not a devil without human feelings, he has tremendous emotion, he loved so deeply that just like a burning fire, the love between Heathciff and Catherine draws an eternal Love, which shakes the whole human, even ghost. Even we can say that his cruelty is merely an expression of his frustrated love for Catherine. In Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff imprints deeply in readers’ heart.3.2 The hate of Heathcliff3.21. His revenge to the first generationIsabella writes to Nelly, “Is Mr. Heathcliff a man? If so, is he mad? And if not, is he a devil? … A tiger or a venomous s erpent coul not rouse terror in me equal to that which he wakens.” Nelly says he is “rough as a saw edge and hard as whinstone!” Even Catherine says: “What is Heathcliff—an unreclaimed creature, without refinement—without cultivation; an arid wilderness of furze and whinstone.”(Zhang, 2005)we can find that Heathcliff has changed; he becomes a devil, a murderous animal, just as a tiger, a lion, wolf. He becomes a beast. His hate is beyond his love. As he himself points out, his abuse of Isabella is purely sadistic, as he abuses himself by seeing how much abuse she can take and still come cringing back for more. He marries Isabella for revenge. We can be shocked by Heathcliff’s gratuitous violence and still masochistically, insisit on seeing him as a romantic hero. “I have no pity! I have no pity! The more the worms writhe, the more I yearn to crush out their entrails! It is a moral teething; and I grind with greater energy, in proportionto the increase of pain.”(Bronte, 2004) we can find it that he becomes merciless, hard-hearted, ruthless and inhuman, and his revenge is cold, cruel, and even incomprehensible. His hate derived from his love, he can not bear the betrayal of Catherine. He uses his whole life and power to revenge anyone he hates. Besides, in ch apter 15, Heathcliff speaks harshly to Catherine, who is dying, saying, “Y ou deserve this. Y ou have killed yourself.”Distraught, Catherine sobs that “I forgive you. Forgive me! Holding her responsible for breaking both of their hearts, Heathcliff considers her the murderer of both of them and tells her, “I forgive what you have done to me. I love my murderer---but yours! How can I?” From these words, we can find it although he loves Catherine; he can not forgive her betrayal. His hate is beyond his love.3.22. His revenge to the second generation6His revenge to the second generation is the climax of his hate. Some critics dismiss the plot of the second generation as being a simple retelling of the first story; however, in doing so, they are dismissing the entire second half of the book. Clearly, in order to appreciate fully Wuthering Heights, and understand his inner heart attention must be paid to his revenge to the second generation. Edgar tells little Cathy: “Heathcliff is a most diabolical man, delighti ng to wrong and ruin those he hates, if they give him the slightest opportunity.”(Zhang, 2005)These imply that he is completely swallowed by hate, and his mind apart from hatred- no other objects. Revenge has occupied his whole life, and even become his instinctive needs. He is a devil and revenger and his revenge become a truth. He becomes a fierce, pitiless, wolfish man.3.23. The results of his revengeThe results of his revenge are: he gets Hindley into his clutches and finally drive him to drink himself to death. Edgar dies of grief. He also torments Isabella to death; both Wuthering Heights and thrushcross Grange, however, his revenge let him live alone. Just as he says to Nelly: “my mind is so eternally secluded in itself; it istempting at last to turn it out to another.” (Bronte,2004)From these we can see: he is losing connect with the society, and he has no man to listen to him. In fact, his revenge is ridiculous.4. ConclusionWuthering Heights is generally considered one of the most original works. In many aspects, it is unique and has no counterparts in mode as well as the love and hate of him. Even the English great writer Maugham (2007) once said: “I don't know to still have which novel among them pain and sufferings of the love, be addicted to, ruthlessness, persis t, described ever and thus and astonishingly.” Wuthering Heights is not just a sentiment romance novel. It is a presentation of life, an essay on love, hate, revenge, the entanglement of love and hate, and a glimpse at relationships. When we read the novel, we are in no position to pass our comment on them, to say who is right7and who is wrong, because they are not to be judged by common sense or conventional morality. In Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff and Catherine, both of them imprint deeply in readers’ heart, after reading this novel, you will forgive Catherine’s betrayal, and you will be touched by Heathcliff’s love. Heathcliff’s love is a disobedience of the society, though both of them are dead, yet their love overcomes death, and their love becomes an eternal. In her short life, she writes only one novel, Wuthering Heights, which has become a worldwide classic for its enduring interest and wide popularity. However, the novel is ignored by the readers and critics of the Victorian Age. It is not until the 20th century that the true value of the novel is discovered. As time passes by, her novel has gained more and more attention. Throughout the hundred years the scholars have attained remarkable achievements from diffident points of view, such as themes, narrative skills, writing style, language, feminism and ecocriticism. This paper tries to apply symbolism to analyze the relation between nature and civilization, which are fighting with each other. But the violation of civilization and the death of nature are responsible for the tragedy of Heathcliff and Catherine. The novel mirrors the root of tragedy of human and akes people to return to nature.In this novel Brontë builds Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, which are the tokens of nature and civilization respectively. She condenses the contradiction of the Victorian Age into the story of the two families. The paper is built around the fate of Catherine. It studies the symbolic meanings of Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. Catherine is the conjunction of nature and civilization and the conflict of them is vividly shown in her. All her life she only writes one novel, Wuthering Heights, which is published in 1947 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell. This book gives her worldwide fame. It is termed as one of the most shocking and charming works in the world literature. Algernon Charles Swinburne, the distinguished critic of England, puts that Emily is a genius of tragedy and her novel can stand in the same level with King Lear and Mobi Dick, or the Whale. (Swinburne,1883:18)As a marvelous work in world literature, Wuthering Heights is exceedingly attractive to the critics all around the world. They give it manifold interpretations with different theories from different points of views, such as the theme, the narrative method, the rhetoric devices, the analysis of characters, symbolism, imagery, gothic element, the background and experiences of Emily and the comparison between other works. The critics and scholars strain their brains to dig up the profound and practical meaning from this great work in an attempt to apply it to the modern society.Symbolism is one of the reasons to account for the charm of this novel. This novel grows out of the sittings, characters, plots, images and events. The symbolic settings of Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange are important to the novel. Through the symbolic scenes, the different atmospheres have been presented lively. The characters’ complicated psychological activities become concrete, visual and acceptable through the use of symbolism. It offers Emily the opportunity to analyze the contradiction of her age through the interesting story. As E.M. Frost interprets Wuthering Heights, “the emotions of Heathcliff and Catheri ne Earnshaw function differently to other emotions in fiction...they surround them like thunder clouds, and generate the explosions that fills the novel. Wuthering Heights is filled with sound-storm and rushing wind, a sound more important than words and t houghts.” (Frost,2001:66) David Cecil said that Wuthering Heights is a symbol of natural philosophy of Emily and what Emily wants to display is the conflict between stormand serenity of the cosmos instead of that of the goodness and the wickedness in the society. (Cecil,2002:180)The relation between nature and civilization undoubtedly catches the eyes of the academia. Foreign scholars get a lot of remarkable achievements about this novel. Stevie Davies says that although nature and civilization is in constant fierce dialogue, nature will tame and nourish nature just as little Catherine conquers Hareton with knowledge. (Davies,2004:247) Cecil reveals that there are the opposite forces in the novel-nature and civilization, but they are the components of a harmony instead of conflicting with each other. (Cecil,2002:87) Virginia Woolf proclaims that the world is split apart by two kinds of extremes and what Emily wants to do is to make the chaotic world harmonious. (Woolf,2001:77)There are also a lot of achievements in our country. Dong Rui thinks the philosophical relation between nature and civilization should reach a compromise. If the contradiction between them is not solved well, the disasters will occur. (董瑞, 2009:1-39) Xi Xia holds that nature and civilization will be enemy forever. The rules of the civilized world repress the wonderful humanity and bring tragedy to human. (奚霞,2011:1-31) Liang Xi points out that although the conflict between nature and civilization is inevitable, the tendency of them is in harmony. (梁昕,2005:96-99) Chen Maolin thinks that the conflict between nature and civilization is ever-lasting. But their co-existence will be good to the development of society. (陈茂林,2007:69-73) Pei Jiejun is opposite to them. He holds that the civilization is detrimental to the humanity and the violation of civilization should be responsible for the twist of the humanity. (裴洁俊,2011:261) Zhou Qinghe says the tragic end of the uneventful love is the result of the struggle between personality and culture. (周庆贺,2003:77-78) Fu Xiaoping thinks that people have wonderful humanity and the civilization is the best direction for people. (付小平,2009:42-43)In this paper I want to discuss the conflict between nature and civilization in terms of the symbolism. This paper will be divided into four parts. The first part is introduction. This part will focus on the importance of the writer and scholars’ achievements on Wuthering Heights. The second part is chapter one. In this part I willtalk about the symbolic meaning of Wuthering Heights and the natural life in this place. The third part is chapter two. In this part I will pay my attention to the symbolic meaning of Thrushcross Grange and the repressed life in Thrushcross Grange. In the fourth part conclusion will be given. Through the comparison of the natural life in Wuthering Heights and the tortured life in Thrushcross Grange, Emily summons people to return to the simple but happy life. At the same time, Emily gives a fierce attack against the values of the Victorian Age, such as the hierarchical system and vanity.2. The Life of Nature in Wuthering HeightsEmily Brontë is a master of symbolism. In Wuthering Heights she condenses an endless and real world into a small thing. Virginia Woolf says that both Emily and Charlotte are inclined to resort to the power of nature. (Woolf,2001:148)The landscapes under their pens are permeated with affection. Emily uses them to disclose the theme of the novel instead of decorating the tedious words. The most remarkable symbolism in this novel is the conflict between nature and civilization. Thus Wuthering Heights is by no means a simple name of a house but the token of the untamed nature.2.1 Wuthering Heights—the Symbol of NatureLocated in the desolate and boundless moor, Wuthering Heights mirrors the coarse and humble aspect of nature. It is dominated by heavy winds and severe atmosphere. Its name “Wuthering”, a provincial adjective, indicates that it exposes itself in the stormy weather and stands the tumult bravely. “One may guess the power of the north wind blowing over the edge, by the excessive slant of a few stunted firs at the end of the house; and by a range of gaunt thorns all stretching their limbs one way, as if craving alms of the sun.”(Brontë,1999:2) Wuthering Heights stands in the dangerous moor so that the people who are acquainted with it will lost their way. People are easily trapped in the lethal swamp.The atmosphere of Wuthering Heights means that it is a world of nature which is pure and intact. The world is not touched and polluted by the civilized world. Anything that wants to violate it is forbidden. The primitive wilderness of nature finds adequate expression in Wuthering Heights. But Wuthering Heights is also surrounded by the beautiful heathers. One can feel the fresh air and see the rippling creeks in the moor. Wuthering Heights never lacks the charming and beautiful aspect of nature. Therefore, Wuthering Heights is the epitome of nature, which owns the internal destruction and primitive wilderness as well as the inviolable peace.The people in Wuthering Heights live a simple and even unadorned life. People can know it clearly when they have a scrutiny on the layout of the parlor. Shoddyguns, various food and the barking puppies can been seen everywhere. Mr. Lockwood gives us the description of life in Wuthering Heights. “One step brought us into the family sitting-room, without any introductory lobby or passage: they call it here ‘the house’preeminently...at least I distinguished a chatter of tongues, and a chatter of culinary utensils, deep within.” (Bronte,1999:2) Obviously there is a correspondence between the atmosphere of Wuthering Heights and the life here.The wild and free atmosphere exerts great influence on the people of Wuthering Heights. They are strong, good-hearted and have stormy personalities. For example, when Mr. Lockwood is attacked by the dogs, “a lusty dame, with tucked-up gown, bare arms, and fire-flushed cheeks, rushed into the midst of us flourishing a frying-pan”. (Brontë,1999:4) Old Mr. Earnshaw ignores other’s opinions and regards a humble Gypsy boy as “a gift of God”. (Brontë,1999:29) Seemingly Nelly is disgusted with Heathcliff but she gives him the encouragements and love of mother. Wuthering Heights is a simple and natural world with simple people.2.2 The Wilderness of Catherine and HeathcliffForged by the rugged surroundings, Catherine and Heathcliff are the sons of nature. They are strong, rebellious and kind. Heathcliff is far from the restrictions of various norms of society and his heart is never open to the Christian thoughts. Catherine is far from the commotion and secular things and she keeps her heart intact. All the years around she runs across the barren moor and enjoys the pleasure that nature brings to her. Their wild and pure personalities are in debt to the beautiful and free nature.When scolded by all the people, Catherine behaves arrogantly and thinks she is the happiest girl in the world. She has a gift to turn Joseph’s religious curses into ridicule and she always defies the authority of her father. As a daughter of nature, she behaves without affectation and bears little resemblance to the girls of her age. Her wildness finds adequate expression in the comment of Nelly. “…she put all of us past our patience fifty times and oftener in a day. from the hour she came down stairs till the hour she went to bed, we had not a minute's security that she wouldn't be inmischief. Her spirits were always at high-water mark, her tongue always going—singing, laughing, and plaguing everybody who would not do the same…” (Brontë,1999:34) Far from the hypocritical civilization, this “wild and wicked girl” has the “bonniest eye, and sweetest smile, and lightest foot in the parish.” (Brontë, 1999:34)Heathcliff’s name is the combination of the word “heath” and “cliff”. The name always reminds people of dangers and destruction. When he appears in the novel, he is so impressive that everyone calls him “the wild child”. Nature is his paradise and he always finds comfort in it when he is painful. Even his wilderness cannot be prevented by the tyrannical rules of Hindley who bears an ancient grudge against him. What Hindley wants to do is to deprive happiness of Heathcliff but he fails. Although he degrades Heathcliff and obliges him to do the arduous work, Heathcliff can get happiness in the moor. “It is one of their chief amusements to run away to the moors in the morning and remain there all day, and after punishment grew a little thing to laugh at. The curate might set as many chapters as he pleased for Catherine to get by heart, and Joseph might thrash Heathcliff till his arm ached; they forgot everything the minute t hey were together again.”(Brontë,1999:37)The two children love each other deeply. They have a better understanding that they are made by the same thing and both of them are sons of nature. All the punishments will be ignored when they consign themselves to nature. The bleak and boundless moor is their harbor of their exhausted hearts. The moor offers them a place to relax their wild spirits. Although there are various troubles in Wuthering Heights, such as the afflicts imposed by stubborn Joseph who attempts to curb their wilderness with the Christian thoughts, rebellious Catherine and Heathcliff always get happiness from their fierce revolts. The funny and free experiences in Wuthering Heights have been kept in the diary of Catherine: “H, and I are going to rebel—we took our initiatory step this evening... I took my dingy volume by the scroop, and hurled it into the dog—kennel, vowing I hated a good book. Heathcliff kicked his to the same place.”(Brontë,1999:17) Both of them are opposite to the boring and routine religiousrituals. They think those are responsible for the repressed nature. This rebellious spirit stems from their wild and free personality which is endowed by nature.During their revolts against Hindley, they find the elements of wilderness in each other. This untamed nature offers them the happy world. Catherine tells Nelly that her life in Wuthering Heights is much better than Heaven because Heathcliff is here. This is also a reason why Catherine wants to relive this unforgettable experiences when she is tormented to death by two kinds of tremendous forces after her marriage. It is a kind of vehement and destructive love which is unpolluted by the secular things, such as fame, wealth and social status. Maybe the happy and pure life in Wuthering Heights is a good reason why Catherine looks down upon Thrushcross Grange and asks Edgar to bury her in the moor—her only way to return to nature.Emily is a worshiper of nature. Her frantic love towards the bleak moor of her hometown is beyond people’s imagination. All the years around, her solitary figure can be seen in the moor. Only in the untrodden moor, is her heart permeated with glee and freedom. Once she is far from the moor and trapped in the social life, the strong feeling of uneasiness will seize her. (Brontë,1999:55) Wuthering Heights is no more than the duplicate of the hometown of Emily.Emily thinks that nature provides people with a more simple but pure life. Through the description of the life of Wuthering Heights, the happy, healthy and natural life is presented to people. Emily displays her opinion through the words of Mr. Lockwood. After hearing the story of Catherine and Heathcliff, Mr. Lockwood, the tenant of Wuthering Heights, speaks highly of its atmosphere. The civilized world is encroaching on the territory of nature and it exerts great influence on the values and lifestyles of human. People get comfortable life at the cost of some good qualities of the natural world. It is a complicated world full of various vices and it will kill people’s primitive happiness. This world is defined as vanity fair by William Makepeace Thackeray. As a brilliant representative of critical realism, Emily is never indifferent to the existence of civilization and the fierce battle between nature and civilization. Besides Wuthering Heights, Emily builds a civilized world-Thrushcross Grange.3.1 Thrushcross Grange-the Symbol of CivilizationMaking a sharp contrast with the Wuthering Heights, Thrushcross Grange is the epitome of the civilized society, a place to manifest norms of the civilized society. It prevails graceful, serene and civilized atmosphere. The nature of the habitants here is modified by religious belief and social norms. Their life shine with the dazzling light of civilization. Even Catherine and Heathcliff are overwhelmed by this alienable and magnificent world when they intrude into this civilized world accidentally. “It was beautiful—a splendid place carpeted with crimson, and crimson-covered chairs and tables, and a pure white ceiling bordered by gold, a shower of glass—drops hanging in sliver chains from the centre, and shimmering with little soft tapers”(Brontë,1999:38)Just as the bleak and untamed moor gives the unique personalities to the people in Wuthering Heights, the magnificent grange also has great influence on the personalities of people here. Although Thrushcross Grange has the gorgeous landscape and splendid decoration, people here are weak and lack vitality. Edger Linton and his sister are compared to the flowers of the greenhouse. They scramble for a dog and they cry easily. This thing will never happen in Wuthering Heights.Therefore, their behaviors are despised by Catherine and Heathcliff. When the Lintons go to church, they are covered by layers of clothes in the carriage. But the Earnshaws go to church by horse in winter.The Lintons not only stand for weakness, but also for people who are colored by the vices of the Victorian Age. The civilized life offers them the comfortable and noble life but they are deprived of the wonderful things which are endowed by the simple and pure life. The Lintons have different treatments towards Catherine and Heathcliff, because the former is the sister of the owner of Wuthering Heights and the later is a humble and penniless boy. They are enslaved by the hierarchical system. The Lintons’ disgust at Heathcliff and their “vacant blue eyes” (Brontë,1999:41) reflect the deflects of the civilized life.3.2 The Lost Spirit between Nature and CivilizationCatherine, the daughter of nature, is seduced by the luxurious and comfortable life. Although she has passionate love towards nature never release, her short stay in Thrushcross Grange influences her. The vices of the civilized world are violating her pure and innocent spirit, such as vanity and hierarchical thought. Mrs. Linton laughs at the humble behaviors of Heathcliff and warns Edgar not to speak to him. These thoughts let Catherine be shame of the coarse life. Before the death of Catherine, Heathcliff tells us the reason of their tragic end: “...Misery, and degradation, and death, and nothing that God or Satan could inflict would have parted us, you, of your own will, did it...” (Brontë,1999:135)In Thrushcross Grange she represses her true heart and behaves like a graceful and elegant girl. Her vanity and the rules of the civilized world tell her that becoming the owner of Thrushcross Grange is much better than the life of Wuthering Heights and only the rich man is suitable for her. Obviously she begins to be influenced by the inhuman values of the civilized world. It is the first time that Catherine asks Heathcliff to wash his dirty face. Her vanity makes her to accept the proposal of Edgar and abandons her true love. This pure and wild spirit has been colored by hervanity and hierarchical thought-the side effects of the civilized world.But Catherine gradually realizes this life is devoid of vitality and filled with hypocritical thought. It will kill her sooner or later. The boring life in Thrushcross Grange gives her a feeling that a wild and free bird has been trapped in the golden cage. Instead of breathing fresh air in the boundless moor and being comforted by the omnipotent nature, she is confined to the exquisite house. She represses her wildness to humor her civilized life in Thrushcross Grange. Even Nelly is changed by the rules of the civilized world. In Wuthering Heights Nelly serves as a mother or friend while here even Nelly is warned sternly of being polite to the hostess. The change of Nelly makes Catherine upset because it reminds her of the dilemma in Thrushcross Grange. Nelly tells to Mr. Lockwood: “ I lea rned to be less touchy; and, for the space of half a year, the gunpowder lay as harmless as sand, because no fire came near to explode it. Catherine had seasons of gloom and silence, now and then...she was never subject to depres sion of spirits before.” (B rontë,1999:77)Catherine tells Nelly that she has endured very bitter misery alone in this civilized world. The return of Heathcliff gives her real life again. Heathcliff makes her realize the restrictions and impotency of the civilized world. Facing the revengeful behaviors of Heathcliff, Edgar Linton cries for the love of Catherine. This weakness and blankness strengthens Catherine’s realization that she makes a big mistake because of her vanity. She is chewed by her wrong decision. She tortures herself to death.She is so eager to return to nature that she opens window to feel the cold wind. The wind of the moor is the food of her spirit. She thinks it is a way to kill the repressed time in Thrushcross Grange. Although Catherine strains her brain to harmonize the relation between Heathcliff and her husband, she fails. Catharine displays her regret again and again before her death. She shouts out: “I wish I were out of doors! I wish I were a girl, half savage and handy, and free...I’m sure I shoul d be myself were I once among the heather on those hills.” (Brontë,1999:106) The life in the civilized world makes the free spirit bath in tears.As far as Catherine is concerned, the seven years in the civilized world is a blank.Her secular love to Edgar is not enough to support her life. The splendid life brings ruin to her love as well as herself. When Heathcliff complains about her betrayal, she sobs: “ If I’ve done wrong, I’m dying to it.” (Brontë,1999:136) Before she dies, she regrets for her decision and looks down upon the decent life. She asks Edgar to bury her in the free moor instead of the church. Her death is the only available way to correct her mistake and let her come back to nature.Catherine’s death in Thrushcross Grange is full of me aning. In the beginning of the novel, Mr. Lockwood is told by the ghost of Catherine: “I’m come home. I’d l ost my way on the moor!” (Brontë,1999:20) Her words mean that she has betrayed her heart and now she wants to go to nature. The window symbolizes civilization. The window prevents her from her ideal home-nature. Because of her vanity she has been punished for many years as a lost ghost. Her dream of returning to nature is fulfilled after Heathcliff smashes the window into pieces.Brontë is a recluse of the Victorian Age. She witnesses the changes of many pure spirits owing to the violation of civilization. The values of the capitalist society get the upper hand, such as vanity and hierarchical system. Emily cannot come to terms with this complicated age. She thinks that the civilized life must bring disasters to people. She testifies herself in this novel. Catherine makes Heathcliff a victim-a demonic revenger with the twist humanity. Even the tragedy continues in the second generation. If Wuthering Heights endows life with Catherine, Thrushcross Grange deprives her of the vigorous and free life.The death of Catherine in Thrushcross Grange reflects the spiritual death of the people in Victorian period. Through the death of Catherine, Emily attacks against civilization. At the same time, the ghosts attain happiness again in the moor after Heathcliff breaks the window. It is safe to say that Emily cherishes hope towards the lost people.4. ConclusionWuthering Heights is great and unique. Since its appearance, it has attracted countless readers with its enduring charm. It gives people a vehement and tragic story of love as well as a miniature of the Victorian Age. Emily, the great novelist, makes us relive this complexed age and feel the conflict between nature and civilization. Oates says that people are still shocked by the superb craftsmanship and rich imagination in Wuthering Heights again and again. (Oates,2006:205) The novel is filled with symbolism. Wuthering Heights is the token of nature, which is intact and untamed by civilization. Therefore, it keeps the wonderful lifestyle. It is a pure field which is protected by nature. The personalities of people in Wuthering Heights bear resemblance to the atmosphere. They live a simple but happy life in this natural place. The most remarkable characters in this place are Heathcliff and Catherine. They are the sons of nature and nature endows them with wilderness. Thus they are rebellious and have pure love to each other. In fact, the whole Wuthering Heights is a symbol of the natural life. It represents the natural, healthy and happy life.Indeed, it is the ideal kingdom of the heart of Emily. Living in the desolated moor, Emily holds deep love to nature. This point is truthfully reflected in the description of Wuthering Heights and the characters.But Emily is not a romanticist completely. She is a brilliant representative of critical realism. Victorian period is witnessing great changes. People are caught by the conflict between nature and civilization. Civilization brings people the comfortable life but ruins some wonderful qualities. Thrushcross Grange is the symbol of civilization. In fact, what Catherine and Heathcliff are facing is the problems with which the people in Victorian Age are confronted. Catherine is everyone who cannot deal with the relation between nature and civilization well. The values of the civilized world are conquering the spirits of natural life. In the natural life of Wuthering Heights, the hierarchical thought and vanity are far from Catherine and others. EvenNelly doesn’t look down upon Heathcliff. The natural atmosphere nourishes the simple and pure spirit. But after her encounter with Thrushcross Grange-civilization, Catherine betrays her heart and love because of the hierarchical thoughts and vanity. These vices are the result of the civilized world. Civilization is violating the natural and pure life. Some people are conquered at the cost of the happy life.The alienation of Catherine brings destructive disasters, such as her death, the twist humanity of Heathcliff and the sorrow end of Edgar. The death of Catherine is heavily loaded with symbolic meaning. At the same time, the dying Catherine makes a sharp contrast between the life of nature and that of civilization. Although tortured by the civilized world, Catherine is eager to come back to nature. She compares north wind in the moor to her breath and she thinks civilization deprives her of spirit. The death of Catherine is a fierce attack against civilization which brings vanity and hierarchical thoughts.Through the comparison between natural life and civilized life, Emily displays her opinion. Although the natural life is coarse and humble, nature gives people simple but happy life. Emily feels this is a kind of life which is forbidden in the civilized world. Civilization brings the comfortable and noble life, but the restrictions of the civilized world prevents people from the free and happy life. It teaches people values and represses people’s nature. In the end it will ruin all the wonderful things. Seemingly it tells about the love story of Heathcliff and Catherine, but Wuthering Heights is a great book touching upon the historic problems-the conflict between nature and civilization.In conclusion, what Emily wants to tell us is that the violation of the civilized world will bring tragedy to the human race. The natural and free spirit is killed by the decent and luxurious life. Although people’s natural heart are repressed, the explosion of the repressed nature will brings more dangers. The restrictions of the civilized life kill the wild spirit. Therefore, she summons the lost people to return to nature-the natural, healthy and happy life.。
