World's coolest bookstores(CNN)-Someday there may be a generation of kids who think bookstores are fictional creations found only in novels that come in the mail.Understandable, since many of the world's most beautiful independent bookstores have closed in recent years. Not all of them are facing unhappy endings, however. The brick-and-mortar(砂浆)survivors-and brave newcomers-have adapted to the Age of Amazon in their own ways. Old or new, all with fascinating stories, the bookstores below serve as historic sites, sanctuaries(避难所),salons of culture and must-visit entries in any travel guide.Librairie Avant-Garde (Nanjing, China)China's most beautiful bookstore is located inside a massive underground parking lot once used as a bomb shelter. The 4,OOO-square-meter store's unusual features include large crosses, a copy of Rodin's "The Thinker" and a checkout counter built out of thousands of old books,The store also functions as a sort of public library, with more than 300 reading chairs. "A good bookshop should provide space, vision and nurture the city with its humanitarian spirit," owner Qian Xiaohua tells CNN. "It's a place for people to have dreams in the city."Foyles flagship (London)In June 2014, the century-old London bookseller moved into its spacious new digs -- the size of 13 tennis courts-just a step away from its former home. Foyles new space has its own interest- ing history as the former Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design building, where Alexan- der McQueen and Stella McCartney once studied. The stage where the Sex Pistols played their first gig(演奏) in 1975 nowhouses the Foyles children's department. The store also launched a helpful in-store digital book search map that's automatically enabled on customers' smart phones when they connect to the store's Wi-Fi net- work- the first of its kind in the country. The Last Bookstore (Los Angeles)Hopefully, the Last Bookstore will never fulfill the prophecy(预言) of its name. The popular warehouse-like store buys and sells new and used books and is home to an excel-lent coffee bar and a record shop. The 100,000 books stacked in the "Labyrinth Above the Last Bookstore" section on the mezzanine(夹层楼面) level sell for a dollar each."The space we occupy was originally a bank, and there are still vaults(穹顶 ) on both floors of our store, but now they are full of books," says store manager Katie Orphan. Areservation at an expensive restaurant was made. A beautifully wrapped present had been sitting on my dresser for a few days before the heart-filled holiday. After a hard day at work, I hurried home, ran into the house and jumped into the shower. When my sweetheart arrived, I was dressed in my finest outfit and ready to go. He hugged me, just as the babysitter arrived. We were both excited.Unfortunately, the youngest member in our household wasn't so happy. "Daddy, you were going to take me to buy Mamma a present," Becky, my eight-year-old daughter said, as she sadly walked over to the sofa and sat down beside the babysitter.Roy looked at his watch and realized that if we were to make our reservations, we had to leave right away. He didn't even have a few minutes to take her tothe store to buy a heart-shaped box of chocolate candy. "I'm sorry, I was late getting home, honey," he said."That's OK," Becky replied. "I understand."The entire evening was bittersweet. I couldn't help being concerned about the disappointment in Becky's eyes. I remembered how the joy of Valentine's Dayhad left her face just before the door closed behind us. She wanted me to know how much she loved me. She didn't realize it, but I already knew it very well. Today, I can't remember what was wrapped in that beautiful box, which I was excited for sev- eral days, but I'll never forget the special gift, which I received when we arrived, back home.Becky was asleep on the sofa., holding a box, which was sitting on her lap. When I kissed her cheek, she awoke. "I've made something for you, Mamma," she said, as a big smile covered her ti- ny face. The little box was wrapped in newspaper. As I tore the paper off and openedthe box, I found the sweetest Valentine gift that I have ever received. It was a heart-shaped pillow, filled with love, which I'll cherish forever. My wonderful Valentine gift has a special place in my bedroom today, some thirteen years later. As she was growing up into a young woman, many times I held that pillow close to my heart. I don't know if a pillow can hold magic, but this pillow has surely held a great deal of joy for me over the years. It has helped me through several sleepless nights since she left home for college.I not only treasure the gift, but the memory, as well.I know that I am a very lucky mother, indeed, to have such a wonderful little girl, who wanted so much to share her heart with me. As long as I live, there will never be another Valentine's Day, which will be any more special to me.1. How did the writer plan to spend Valentine's Day?A. To stay at work.B. To have dinner with her husband.C. To have a family dinner.D. To celebrate the day alone.2. How did Becky feel when she knew her father had no time to take her to buy mother a gift?A. A Gift in Newspaper.B. Becky's Dream.C. Valentine's Day.D. A Special Gift.3. Teaching is more than leadership. Some of the teacher's time and effort are directed toward instruction, some toward evaluation. But it is the teacher as a group leader who creates an effective organizational structure and good working environment so that instruction and evaluation activities can take place. A group that is totally disorganized, unclear about its goal . or constantly fighting among its members will not be a good learning group. The pattern includes helping to form and maintain a positive learning environment so that instruction and evaluation activities can take place. On the first day of class, the teacher faces a room filled with individuals (个体 ). Perhaps a few closely united groups and friendships already exist. But there is no sense of group unity, no set of rules for conduct in thegroup , no feeling of belonging. If teachers are successful leaders, they will help students develop a system of relationships that encourages working together.Standards and rules must be set to keep order, make sure of justice and protect individual rights, but do not contradict(相悖) school policy. What happens when one student hurts another's individual rights? Without clear regulations agreeable to the students and teachers, the classroom can become chaotic,(混乱的). Students may break rules they did not know existed. If standards are set without participation from the class, students may spend a great deal of creative energy in destroying the class environment or finding ways to break rules. No matter how skillful the teacher is in uniting students and creating a positive atmosphere, the task is never complete. Regular maintenance(维持) is necessary. Conflicts arise. The needs of individual members change. A new kind of learning task requires a new or organizational structure. Sometimes outsidepressures such as holidays, upcoming tests or sport competitions, or family troubles cause stress in the classroom. One task for the teacher is torecreate a positive environment by helping students deal with conflict , change, and stress.1. The underlined word “maintain" in Paragraph l probably meansA. keepB. buildC. recreateD. evaluate2. According to the author, the teachershould___________________________________ .A. free students from outside pressuresB. set the standards and rules on his ownC. be responsible for a well-organized classD. focus more on instruction and evaluation3. From the passage we can lean that___________________________________ .A. rules cannot be changed once they're formedB. outside pressures may not cause tension among studentsC. if the teacher well units his students, he then will finish his taskD. if rules are not acceptable both to students and teachers, the classroom can be a mess4. What is the author's main purpose of writing the passage?A. To provide information for teaching.B. To show the importance of' teaching a class.C. To study the teacher's behavior in the classroom.D. To compare the teacher's behavior with the students' in class.4. Have you ever wondered where the chocolate in your favorite candy bar comes from? Choco-late comes from the cacao tree, which grows in warm, tropical areas of West Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, and South America. And who eats the delicious chocolate made from the cacao grown in these places? The majority of chocolate is consumed in Europe and North America. This probably sounds like a familiar story-developing countries produce inexpensive raw materials that are manufactured and sold as finished goods in developed countries, and generally, that is what happens with chocolate. Large chocolate companies buy cacao beans at a low price and produce cocoa and chocolate products to sell at arelatively high price. But the familiar story has a new chapter. Beginning in the 1980s, some consumers learned that cacao farmers were living difficult and uncertain lives. The farmers received money for their crops based on world markets, and themarket price for cacao was sometimes so low that farmers received less fortheir crops than the crops had cost to produce. In response, groups of consumers in Europe and the United States developed "fair trade" organizations to guarantee that farmers of cacao, as well as coffee and tea, would receivefair and consistent prices for their crops.Fair trade organizations benefit farmers by buying cacao beans or other products from them directly at higher-than-market prices and eliminating(消除)“middle men" such as exporters. Fair trade organizations also encou rage farming techniques that are not harmful to the environment or to farm workers. for example, growing cacao without chemical pesticides or fertilizers in the shade of rain forest trees.0ne organization, Equal Exchange, helps farmers set up farming cooperatives in which they can share resources and work on projects such as community schools. Another, Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International(FLO),guarantees that products bearing its label meet standards that improve the lives of growers and producers. The results of fair trade are a better standard of living for some farmersand nicer chocolate bars made with organically produced cocoa that consumers don't feel guilty about buying. And al- though fair trade chocolate is somewhat more expensive than other chocolate and now makes up only 1% of chocolate sold, the fair trade idea is spreading quickly. You may soon seefair trade chocolate right next to the more famous bars in your favorite store.1. The underlined word“that”in Paragraph l refersto________________________ .A. the unfair trade between countriesB. the high price of chocolate productsC. the traditional production of raw materialsD. the major consumption of the finished food2. The organization Equal Exchange aims to________________________ .A. promote chocolate salesB. offer support to the farmersC. reduce the cost of growing cropsD. increase the production of chocolate3. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?A. There will be more fair trade chocolate ill the future.B. Fair trade chocolate is not as tasty as other chocolate.C. Consumers feel guilty about buying fair trade chocolate.D. There is probably no reason to worry about cacao farmers.4. The passage mainly talks about______________________________ .A. giving tips on how to undertake fair chocolate tradeB. advising people to join in Fair trade organizationsC. encouraging farmers to adopt organic farmingD. informing people of fair trade chocolate二、七选五5. How to Negotiatewhen you're negotiating(协商)with someone, listen for the messages that heor she might be sending to you. 1. Imagine you're staying in a hotel, and you want to change your room-The manager s answer of“That would be very difficult, sir”,does not mean that he is 8aymg“no.”It Just means that he wants toknow what you are prepared to offer him in return for the change of room.If you are buying a new car, and want to pay less than the price being asked, then the sales. man s comment, 2. means that they do negotiate on other things, like the delivery time, or the “extra” that might be available aspart of the purchase. In the same car showroom, if the salesman says, 3. then your response should be to ask who can. The message the salesman is sending suggests that his boss is the one you need to be talking to.4. In any negotiation, the two “players” wish to get as much out of it as they can, of course. In the three examples above. the salesmen and the hotel manager are hoping that you will accept their price or conditions——but their “messages” make it clear that there may be room for movement and compromise.5. .A. Patience plays a vital role in listening, which leads to a successful negotiation.B. “Sorry, I myself can't negotiate prices",C. "I'm sorry, but we never negotiate on the price",D. "I'm sorry, but our price is quite reasonable",E. In all of these situations, the message is never communicated in clear terms.F. The wage differences between women and men were similar in the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany and France.5.4 percent is a big difference in pay between men and women because it cannot be explained by women and men taking the same kinds of jobs. AEnglishWorld languageOnce people dreamed of a language that everybody in the world could understand. Now, for the first time in human history, perhaps there is one—English. It is the official language in more than 50 countries and 250-300 million speak it as a second language. Some say that half the world will be speaking it in the year 2050.Difficult to master?English is not the easiest language to learn—most of its common verbs are irregular and it has a large vocabulary—at least 200,000 words are in common use. Its pronunciation and written form are also very different.User-friendlyBut some things make it easy—nouns don't have gender and verbs are less complicated than other languages. There is only one form to speak to someone directly—‘you’. Adjectives don't agree with nouns, and many nouns are often also verbs.English is everywhereSome other languages may have more speakers, like Spanish or Mandarin. But English is used in many different areas. It is the language of transport: most airline pilots and air-traffic controllers use it. At sea a simple form of English is the international language of communication.English for progressIt is also the first language of science, technology and education—an estimated 80 per cent of the information stored on the internet is in English and 90 per cent of schoolchildren in European countries study it as their first foreign language.New wordsAround 25,000 new words and expressions enter the English language every year. Do you know what a helicopterparent is?—a mother or father too involved in the life of their child. And what about a boomerangchild?—a young adult who returns to live with their parents for financial reasons. The future of EnglishWhat is the future of English as a global language? Will another language ever replace it? Many think not—it is already too popular.21. According to the text, how many people speak English as a second language?A. Around 25,000 million.B. 250-300 million.C. At least 200,000 million.D. 90 million.22. According to the text, why could English be used as a global language?A. And summer after summer I enjoyed staying with my grandparents as a young child. I was from the city and loved the small town where they lived. People kneweveryone, their children, their pets, their ancestors.Grandma was always using her hands for something exciting... she would make sandwiches and we’d have tea parties, plant flowers and carefully tend them. She loved knitting sweaters as well as making beautiful quilts for her grandchildren. I remember the small thimble (顶针) she would place on her finger while doing her needlework.A few years ago, when Grandma left this earth for her new residence in Heaven, I bid farewell to my loving grandmother. How quickly our lives can change! We had just had tea together a couple of months earlier, on her 91st birthday. I missed her very much, but I noticed it mostly on my birthdays, because there was no card from Grandma. She’d never forgotten my birthday! On one particular birthday when I was feeling a little low, something happened made me feel as if she was sharing that special day with me. I was arranging some colorful pillows that she had made, and suddenly I felt something inside one pillow; it was small and hard. I moved the object to a seam(缝)that I carefully opened, and, to my delight, out came a tiny silver thimble! How happy I was to find something that had been a part of her! Not realizing it had fallen off her finger, I pictured her sewing it into that little pillow that I just happened to fluff(抖松), to place on my bedspread(床罩)that day. I carefully laid the thimble alon gside the others I’d collected over the years. What a precious memory of a very special lady who, somehow, I knew, was laughing in delight at sewing her thimble into my pillow. Atthis point, the New Jersey program is not a must.If someone tries to slip in behind an authorized person, the system causes an alarm and red flashinglights in the front office. The entire process takes just seconds. This kind of technology is already at work in airports around the country like Orlando InternationalAirport, where the program has been in operation since July. It has 12,000 subscribers who pay $79.95 forthe convenience of submitting to iris scans rather than going through lengthy security checks. An iris scan is said to be more accurate than a fingerprint because it records 240 unique details—farmore than the seven to twenty-four details that are analyzed in fingerprints. The chances of beingmisidentified by an iris scan are about one in 1.2 million and just one in 1.44 trillion if you scan both eyes.Phil Meara, the Freehold District official, said that although it was expensive, the program would helpschools across the country move into a new frontier in child protection. “This is all part of a largeremphasis, here in New Jersey, on school safety,” he said. “We chose this school because we were lookingfor a typical slightly urban school to launch the system.”Meara applied for a $369,000 grant on behalf of the school district and had the eye scanners installedin two grammar schools and one middle school. So far, 300 of the nearly 1,500 individuals available to pickup a student from school have registered for the eye scan system.28. How does Phil Meara help to protect the safety of children?A. By asking people to register with the security system.B. By applying for grant to install eye scanners in schools.C. By asking the department of justice to fund this program.D. By turning to Orlando International Airport for help.31. What is the best title of this passage?A. Parents Favor the Eye Scan SystemB. Security Management Needs Improving.C. High Technology Comes to SchoolD. Iris Scanners are Invented in the Country.DThe battle for women’s right to voteOne hundred years ago, British women were given the vote for the first time. How did it come about? The first appeals for women’s right to vote in Britain date from the early 19th century. In 1818, in his Plan of Parliamentary Reform, Jeremy Bentham insisted that women should be given the vote. Women at the time had no political rights at all– they were deemed to be represented by their husbands or fathers. The old arguments prevailed. Women, it was said, were mentally less able than men; their “natural sphere” was in the home; they were unable to fight for their country, and thus undeserving of full rights; moreover, they simply didn’t want the vote. This was at least partly true. “I have never felt the want of a vote,” declared Florence Nightingale in 1867, while Queen Victoria c ondemned the “mad, wicked folly of women’s rights”. Even George Eliot was reluctant to back the cause. It wasn’t until the second half of the 19th century that the first campaigning women’s groups were formed. Initially they focused on the lack of education, employment opportunities and legal rights for women (married women, at the time, had no independent legal standing); but the question of the vote gradually became central to their demands –both symbolically, as a recognition of women’s rights, and pra ctically, as a means of improving women’s lives. However, the women’s campaigning was still a subject of debate. While most historians agree that the campaigns were initially very effective in mobilizing women and highlighting injustices, a series of massprocessions followed; more than 250,000 women protested in Hyde Park in 1908. Many were arrested and ill-treated; prisoners who went on hunger strike were brutally force-fed. Over time they became steadily more militant – smashing shop windows, setting fire to letter boxes, libraries and even homes. The PM, Herbert Asquith, an opponent of women’s votes, was attacked with a dog whip. Such use of violence was thought, certainly at the time, to have been unfavorable. With the sacrifices of the First World War strengthening support for widening the right to vote generally, women suspended campaigning. More than a million women were newly employed outside the home --in munitions(军需品) factories, engineering works. Crucially, Asquith was replaced as PM by David Lloyd George, a supporter of votes for women. The Representation of the People Act 1918 was introduced by the coalition government and passed by a majority of 385 to 55, gaining the Royal Assent on 6 February 1918. Women over 30, who were householders or married to one, or university graduates, were given the vote.32. Which of the following is NOT the reason why women were not qualified to vote?A. Women were supposed to do housework and serve their husbands.B. Women were too weak to fight against enemies.C. Women had already enjoyed many political rights.D. Women were not as intelligent as men.33. According to the passage, why did women’s campaigning arouse d ebate?A. Because it failed to mobilize women and emphasize injustices.B. Because women were put in prison and abused during the protest.C. Because most women didn’t want the vote.D. Because all the emotional behaviors were regarded as improper.34. The word “militant” (in Line 5, Para.4) probably refers to ______________.A. imposing.B. extreme.C. negative.D. obedient.35. What can be inferred from the passage?A. Women stopped protesting for their vote because they were offered more job opportunities.B. The PM, Herbert Asquith, an opponent of women’s votes, committed suicide.C. The first campaigning women groups were formed originally for the sake of legal rights.D. All women can enjoy their right to vote since the introduction of People Act.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Many of these poor students don’t get enough food to eat at home, so a free school lunch or a free after-school meal might be the most food they would get all day.Kapasi, who graduated from private school, was shocked. Therefore, she was determined to help. “I want other kids to understand that if they meet a problem, they don’t have to wait to be an adult to salve it,” says Kapasi. She and a group of friends are now putting their programming skills ta work to create an app called Food for Thought, which will allow parents, students and even kind-hearted strangers to donate to a lunch account for a student in need at anearby school.About 20 million American kids receive free lunches. Two million more quality for reduced-price meals, and t hose students’ families may pay for part of their food. When they don’t have the money on any day. the students might have to choose an “alternative meal” such as a free cheese sandwich. One clever feature of the app which is being supported by donation from companies and social investors—is that it provides anonymity (匿名) to lunch recipients and donors. To receive financial help, a family will need only a recommendation from a school administrator, and no one else knows.“I want to make the application a platform where all users feel no shame in using it,” says Kapasi. That’s what some experts believe Connecting online is a great way to stay in touch, they say. However, some experts worry that many kids are so busy connecting online that they might be missing out on true friendships.Could this be true? During your parents’ childhoods, connecting with friends usuallymeans spending time with them in the flesh. Kids played Scrabble around a table, not Words With Friends on their phones. When friends missed each other, they picked up the telephone. Friends might even write letters to each other.Today, most communication takes place online. A typical teen sends 2,000 texts a month and spends more than 44 hours per week in front of a screen. Much of his time is spent on social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook. In fact, in many ways, online communication can make friend ships stronger, “There’s definitely positive influence. Kids can stay in constant contact, which means they can share more of their feelings with each other,” says Katie, co-author of the App Generation.Other experts, however, warn that too much online communication can get in the way of form ing deep friendships. “If we are constantly checking in with our virtual worlds, we will have little time for our real world friendships.” says Rosen, a professor at California State University.Rosen also worries that today s kids might mistake the “friends” on the social media for true friends in life. However, in tough times, you didn’t need someone to like your picture or share your tweet. You needed someone who would keep your secrets and hold you hand. You would like to talk face to face.8.What is the purpose of the first paragraph?A.To summarize the text. B.To tell about true friends.C.To bring up a discussion. D.To encourage online dating.9.What is Katie’s attitude towards online communication?A.Worried. B.Optimistic.C.Confused. D.Unconcerned.10.What view does Rosen hold?A.It’s wise to turn to friends online.B.It’s easier to develop friendships in reality.C.Facebook helps people stay closely connected.D.Busy online communication may affect real world friendships.11.Where can you find the former generations approach of communication?A.In paragraph 6. B.In paragraph 5.C.In paragraph 4. D.In paragraph 3.Antaretica’s ice-white environment is going green and facing other unexpected threats. Scientists say that as temperatures go up in the polar region, invading (入侵) plants and insects, including the flies, cause a major conservation threat.More and more of these invaders, in the form of larvae (幼虫) or seeds, are surviving in coastal areas around the South Pole, where the temperature has risen by more than 3℃ over the past three decades. Glaciers have retreated, exposing more land which has been occupied by mosses that have been found to be growing more quickly and thickly than everbefore-providing potential green homes for invaders.“The common house flies are a perfect example of the problem the Antarctic now faces from invading species,” said Dominic Hodgson of the British Antarctic Survey. “It comes in on ships, where it exists in kitchens and then at bases on the continent. It now has an increasing chance of surviving in the Antarctic as it warms up, and that is a worry. Insects like the house flies carry bacteria that could have a deadly effect on native lifeforms.”The Antarctic has several native species of insects. Together with its native mosses, these are now coming under increased threat from three major sources: visiting scientists, increasing numbers of tourists and global warming. However, it is global warming that is the main driver of the greening of Antarctica. In 2015, more than 38,000 tourists visited Antarctica. “These tourists are often very careful about not leaving waste or having mud. But they could carry seeds or larvae on their boots when they set foot on the Antarctic,” said Hodgson.More and more invasive insects and plants have been found on the Antarctic and have required removal. “the insects and plants that are native to Antarctica have survived these for thousands of years,” said Hodgson. “We have go t to act now if we want to save the environment.”12.What does the underlined world “mosses” in paragraph 2 refer to?A.A kind of plants B.House fliesC.Coastal areas D.A kind of animals13.What is the main cause of the Antarctic going green?A.Scientists’ coming.B.Global warming.C.A growing number of visitors D.The rapid spread of native planting.14.What do we know about the house flies in the Antarctic?A.They are native to the Antarctic.B.They will disappear due to the cold climate.C.They seriously affected the Antarctic native speciesD.They directly fly to the Antarctic from nearby islands.15.What’s the best title for the text?A.The Antarctic Is Faced with Various ThreatsB.The Antarctic Is Becoming Green and EnergeticC.More and More Scientists Get to Explore the AntarcticD.Global Warming has Caused the Temperature in the Antarctic to Rise up二、完形填空My son has been in hospital again, this time with an emergency admission. We have to run.”he repeatedly shouted. He grasped people and told them to follow him toward a parking area in the direction of the airport, away from Las Vegas Avenue.A few girls weren’t fully hidden. The copy machine repairman from Orange County,California ,stood up and moved toward them to urge them to get on the ground. That’s when a bullet(子弹) struck him in the neck.Smith believes an off-duty San Diego police officer saved his life. The officer came over and tried to stop the bleeding and then signaled passing cars to try to get Smith a ride.By the time Smith got into a vehicle,he was struggling to breathe.Surgeons found it too risky to remove the bullet from his neck.Smith may have to live with it for the rest of his life. His courageous actions helped his photos go viral on Twitter and Reddit.A photo of Smith has been shared more than 74,000 times, with 177,000“likes”.“I don’t see myself that way,”he said.“I would want someone to do the same for me.No one deserves to lose a life coming to a country festival.” 24.Why did Smith go to the music festival?A.To enjoy fireworks.B.To gather with his family.C.To meet his favourite singers.D.To celebrate his brother’s birthday.25.How did Smith save the people behind a car?A.By directing them to the airport.B.By blocking bullets with his body.C.By taking them to a safe parking lot.D.By pressing them to lie on the ground.26.The surgeons didn’t remove the bullet in Smith’s neck in order to________.A.1et it fall out naturally B.avoid doing harm to himC.make it stop the bleeding D.use it as a reminder of safety27.What do Twitter and Reddit users think of Smith?A.He is a heroic figure.B.He is a modest person.C.He is an Internet addict.D.He is an ambitious dreamer.CThe world’s most complex biological computer, made from a group of engineered cells, could one da y be implanted into the body to detect diseases and deliver treatments. In an early research in 2012, Martin Fussenegger at ETH Zurish in Switzerland and his colleagues engineered two kidney cells to become a biological circuit capable of simple mathematics. One of the cells was able to calculate addition: the presence or absence of each of two chemicals would switch on a reactioninside the cell that would make it shine different colours. The other cell worked in the same way but could subtract amounts. This kind of biological circuit resembles a simple logic circuit in a computer. In theory, it could be used to indicate the presence of an infectious substance while in fact it failed. Most biological reactions in the body aren’t that simple, though. They rarely rely on “one input and one output” – instead, multiple inputs lead to different outputs. For instance, a high level of calcium in the body in the presence of a specific hormone may suggest one disease, but a high level of calcium along with another hormone might indicate a completely different condition. To be more practical, biological computers need to be able to perform more complex mathematics. However, it is hard to pack multiple calculations into a single cell. To get around this, Fussenegger and his team have engineered a multicellular system, in which different cells each perform a separate calculation and pass on the results to each other. The system has nine cells, each containing a biochemical reaction that responds to three chemical inputs – similar to an AND, NOT and OR system in a traditional electronic circuit. These cells coordinate their activities by releasing chemicals that pass from one cell to the other. Together, they form a fully biological circuit that can respond to multiple inputs.“Although it is not at a stage yet where we can test on animals, we believe it is the most complex biological computer ever assembled,” says Fussenegger. “This work addresses one of the major limitations in synthetic biology (合成生物学) –a lack of programmable devices,” says Ángel Goni-Moreno, a synthetic biologist at Newcastle University, UK. He says that Fussenegger’s multicellular approach enables you to programme the circuit and achieve different calculations just by connecting the nine cells in different configurations (设置).In the future, a biological computer like this could be used to monitor more complex medical conditions. For example, it could respond to a rise in calcium, a drop in a hormone and an increase in a biomarker, which together would signal the presence of a specific type of cancer, help diagnose it and alert the user to seek appropriate treatment.28. The underlined word “subtract” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ______.A. add upB. take awayC. split upD. give away29. What was the progress made in Fussenegger’s early research?A. A biological circuit was implanted in one of kidney cells.B. The indication of infectious substances became a reality.C. Engineered kidney cells could switch on biological reactions.D. Certain cells were made capable of performing mathematics.30. What has made Fussenegger’s current multicellular system so special?A. It has all the functions of a traditional electronic circuit.B. It is programmable and able to perform different mathematics.C. It has successfully packed multiple calculations into a single cell.D. It has been tested through a series of experiments on animals.31. What is the best title for the passage?A. Smart cells indicating various cancersB. Electronic circuit made from multi-cellsC. Programmable cells implanted in human bodiesD. Biological computer made from human cellsD“Two centuries ago, Lewis and Clark left St. Louis to explore the new lands acquired in the Louisiana Purcha se,” George W. Bush said, announcing his desire for a program to send men and women to Mars. They made that journey in the spirit of discovery. America has ventured forth into space for the same reasons.”Yet there are vital differences between Lewis and C lark’s expedition and a Mars mission. First, they were headed to a place where hundreds of thousands of people were already living. Second, they were certain to discover places and things of immediate value to the new nation. Third, their venture cost next to nothing by today’s standards. A Mars mission may be the single most expensive non-wartime undertaking in U.S. history.Appealing as the thought of travel to Mars is, it does not mean the journey makes sense, even considering the human calling to explore. And Mars as a destination for people makes absolutely no sense with current technology.Present systems for getting from Earth’s surface to low-Earth orbit are so fantastically expensive that merely launching the 1,000 tons or so of spacecraft and equipment a Mars mission would require could be accomplished only by cutting health-care benefits, education spending, or other important programs—or by raising taxes. Absent some remarkable discovery, astronauts, geologists, and biologists once on Marscould do little more than analyze rocks and feel awestruck(敬畏的) staring into the sky of another world. Yet rocks can be analyzed by automated probes without risk to human life, and at a tiny fraction of the cost of sending people. It is interesting to note that when President Bush unveiled his proposal, he listed these recent major achievements of space exploration pictures of evidence of water on Mars, discovery of more than 100 planets outside our solar system, and study of the soil of Mars. All these accomplishments came from automated probes or automated space telescopes. Bush’s proposal, which calls for reprogramming some of NASA’s present budget into the Mars effort, might actually lead to a reduction in such unmanned science—the one aspect of space explorati on that’s working really well.Rather than spend hundreds of billions of dollars to hurl tons toward Mars using current technology, why not take a decade or two or however much time is required researching new launch systems and advanced propulsion (推进力)? lf new launch systems could put weight into orbit affordably, and advanced propulsion could speed up that long, slow transit to Mars, the dream of stepping onto the red planet might become reality. Mars will still be there when the technology is ready.32. What do Lewis and Clark’s expedition and a Mars mission have in common?A. Instant value.B. Human inhabitance.C. Venture cost.D. Exploring spirit.33. Bush’s proposal is challenged for the following reasons except that.A. its expenditure is too huge for the government to afford.B. American people’s well-being will suffer a lot if it is implementedC. great achievements have already been made in Mars exploration in AmericaD. unmanned Mars exploration sounds more practical and economical for the moment34. Which cannot be concluded from the passage?A. Going to Mars using current technology is quite unrealistic.B. A Mars mission will in turn promote the development of unmanned program.C. Bush’s proposal is based on thre e recent great achievements of space explorationD. The achievements in space exploration show how well unmanned science has developed.35. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Risky as it is, a Mars mission helps to retain Americas position as a technological leader.B. A Mars mission is so costly that it may lead to an economic disaster in America.C. Someday people may go to Mars but not until it makes technological sense.D. A Mars mission is unnecessary since the scientists once there won’t mak e great discoveries.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
